Abstract

The aim of this study was to develop partial least squares (PLS) models to predict the concentrations of 45 elements in soils extracted by the aqua regia (AR) method using diffuse reflectance Fourier Transform mid-infrared (MIR; 4000–500 cm−1) spectroscopy. A total of 4130 soils from the GEMAS European soil sampling program (geochemical mapping of agricultural soils and grazing land of Europe) were selected. From the full soil set, 1000 samples were randomly selected to develop PLS models. Cross-validation was used for model training and the remaining 3130 samples used for model testing. According to the ratio of standard deviation to root mean square error (RPD) of the predictions, the elements were allocated into two main groups; Group 1 (successful calibrations, 30 elements), including those elements with RPD ⩾ 1.5 (the coefficient of determination, R2, also provided): Ca (3.3, 0.91), Mg (2.5, 0.84), Al (2.4, 0.83), Fe (2.2, 0.79), Ga (2.1, 0.78), Co (2.1, 0.77), Ni (2.0, 0.77), Sc (2.1, 0.76), Ti (2.0, 0.75), Li (1.9, 0.73), Sr (1.9, 0.72), K (1.8, 0.70), Cr (1.8, 0.70), Th (1.8, 0.69), Be (1.7, 0.66), S (1.7, 0.66), B (1.6, 0.63), Rb (1.6, 0.62), V (1.6, 0.62), Y (1.6, 0.61), Zn (1.6, 0.60), Zr (1.6, 0.59), Nb (1.5, 0.58), Ce (1.5, 0.58), Cs (1.5, 0.58), Na (1.5, 0.57), In (1.5, 0.57), Bi (1.5, 0.56), Cu (1.5, 0.55), and Mn (1.5, 0.54); and Group 2 for 15 elements with RPD values lower than 1.5: As (1.4, 0.52), Ba (1.4, 0.52), La (1.4, 0.52), Tl (1.4, 0.51), P (1.4, 0.46), U (1.4, 0.45), Sb (1.3, 0.46), Mo (1.3, 0.43), Pb (1.3, 0.42), Se (1.3, 0.40), Cd (1.3, 0.40), Sn (1.3, 0.38), Hg (1.2, 0.33), Ag (1.2, 0.32) and W (1.1, 0.19). Abstract

GEochemical Mapping of Agricultural Soils (GEMAS) is a cooperation project between the Geochemistry Expert Group of EuroGeoSurveys (EGS) and Eurometaux. The GEMAS project aim was to produce soil geochemical data at the continental-scale consistent with the EU regulation REACH (Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals). All GEMAS project samples were analysed by variety of methods, including ICP-AES and ICP-MS following an aqua regia extraction, XRF and an MMI leach. The Italian Atlas contains colour surface maps displaying interpolated data and graduated dots, maps for regional variability of factor scores of elemental associations, and 15 baseline maps of selected elements following the Italian statutory intervention criteria. The maps in the Italian Geochemical Atlas show that the spatial distribution of chemical elements in the agricultural and grazing land soil is governed mostly by geogenic factors, even though the concentration levels of many of the investigated elements are well above the intervention limits set by the Italian environmental law (dl 152/2006). Regional-scale maps show that the element distribution patterns reflect the geochemistry of the major lithological units and structural lineaments, even using a very low sampling density grid of 1 sample site/2500 km2. Areas, such as the Roman-Neapolitan Alkaline Province, the Iglesiente-Sulcis mining district in Sardinia, the Ligurian ophiolites and the evaporites formation in Sicily, are easily detectable on the produced maps. An important outcome is that the Geochemical Atlas of Italian agricultural and grazing land soil facilitates the popularisation of the background/baseline variation for chemical elements at the country-wide scale.

Abstract

Nel manuale sono presentati e illustrati i risultati ottenuti dalle indagini ambientali realizzate sui sedimenti fluviali e sui suoli dei Monti Peloritani, nella Sicilia Nord Orientale. La cartografia geochimica relativa ai sedimenti fluviali è tratta dal lavoro di De Vivo et al. (1999) ed è basata su 1198 campioni prelevati in un’area di 435 Km2. La campionatura dei suoli superficiali è stata eseguita, invece, su un’area di estensione ridotta di circa 250 Km2. Per i sedimenti fluviali vengono discusse le carte geochimiche di 34 elementi chimici, mentre per i suoli gli elementi trattati sono 39. Per ogni elemento chimico sono riportate le proprietà, le applicazioni, gli effetti sulla salute, nonché le carte della distribuzione delle concentrazioni, sia puntuali sia interpolate; per i suoli sono state inoltre prodotte le carte geochimiche dei tenori di fondo. Le carte di questo atlante potranno essere utilizzate in futuro come riferimento per la valutazione dell’impatto ambientale delle attività antropiche presenti nell’area. Esse rappresentano uno strumento di notevole valenza ambientale, soprattutto, per quanto concerne la valutazione dei tenori di fondo dei vari elementi chimici esaminati, fra i quali quelli tossici. L’opera è di grande utilità per tutti coloro che sono preposti al controllo ambientale, che lavorano nell’ambito della pianificazione e del recupero di aree contaminate e per tutti gli interessati alla conoscenza dettagliata dei Monti Peloritani.

Abstract

Nel presente atlante geochimico-ambientale sono illustrati i risultati ottenuti dalle indagini eseguite sull’intero territorio della Regione Basilicata, dove è stata effettuata una campionatura ex novo di sedimenti fluviali. Su una superficie di 9.992 Km2 sono stati raccolti, con una densità nominale di circa 1 campione per 10 km2, 801campioni, analizzati con una metodologia analitica che combina l’ICP-MS (spettrometria di massa al plasma accoppiato induttivamente) e l’ICP-ES (spettrometria ad emissione al plasma accoppiato induttivamente) per la determinazione delle concentrazioni di 39 elementi chimici. Le carte geochimico-ambientali che compongono questo atlante rappresentano una “fotografia” dell’attuale distribuzione delle concentrazioni degli elementi chimici analizzati nei sedimenti fluviali e potranno essere utilizzate in futuro come riferimento per la valutazione dell’impatto ambientale delle attività antropiche presenti nella Regione. Abstract

L’Atlante illustra i risultati ottenuti dalle indagini sui suoli superficiali della Campania. Su un’area di 13.595 Km2 sono stati raccolti 3.535 campioni di suolo e analizzati con una metodologia che combina l’ICP–MS (Spettrometria di massa al plasma accoppiato induttivamente) e l’ICP–ES (Spettrometria a emissione al plasma accoppiato induttivamente). Per ogni elemento chimico sono riportate le proprietà, le applicazioni, gli effetti sulla salute, nonché la distribuzione geochimica in Campania. Le carte geochimico–ambientali che compongono il volume rappresentano una “fotografia” risalente al momento del campionamento e potranno essere utilizzate in futuro come riferimento per la valutazione dell’impatto ambientale delle attività antropiche presenti sul territorio. Sono anche uno strumento di notevole valenza ambientale, soprattutto per quanto concerne la valutazione dei tenori di fondo (background) dei vari elementi chimici esaminati.

Abstract

This paper presents the results of an environmental geochemical investigation of the Gulfs of Naples and Salerno, near the Campania plain (Southern Italy). Surface marine sediment samples were collected during three field campaigns: 96 from the Gulfs of Naples and Salerno (NaSa); 123 from the Bagnoli site coastal area (BaSi); and 11 from the ports around the Gulf of Naples (PoNa). Elemental concentrations were determined and their interpolated distribution maps were compiled. Three geochemical sources (or processes) were determined associating elemental distribution with the results obtained from a R-mode factor analysis: 1) geogenic, 2) water kinetics and 3) anthropogenic. The results are presented as raw data single element distributions of eight potential toxic elements (PTEs) (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Pb, Ni and Zn) in the forms of raw data and additive log-ratio transformed data. The latter showed advantages in revealing the actual distribution patterns. Geochemical background reference values of PTEs were determined from the median value of local background reference values. Based on these values, pollution impact analysis was carried out to both BaSi and PoNa samples, indicating most of BaSi and PoNa sediments were affected by moderate to strong Pb, Zn, Cd and Hg pollution. An ecological risk assessment was subsequently carried out on the entire database, pointing a toxic risk ranking in the order Pb > As > Ni > Cd > Hg > Cr.

Abstract

2108 agricultural soil samples (Ap-horizon, 0-20 cm) were collected in Europe (33 countries, area 5.6 million km(2)) as part of the recently completed GEMAS (GEochemical Mapping of Agricultural and grazing land Soil) soil mapping project. GEMAS soil data have been used to provide a general view of element origin and mobility with a main focus on source parent material (and source rocks) at the continental scale, either by reference to average crustal abundances or to normalized patterns of element mobility during weathering processes. The survey area covers a large territory with diverse types of soil parent materials, with distinct geological history and a wide range of climate zones, and landscapes. To normalize the chemical composition of European agricultural soil, mean values and standard deviation of the selected elements have been compared to model compositions of the upper continental crust (UCC) and mean European river suspended sediment. Some elements are enriched relative to the UCC (Al, P, Pb, Zr,) whereas others, such as Mg, Na and Sr are depleted. The concept of the UCC extended normalization pattern has been applied to selected elements. The mean values of Rb, K, Y, Ti, Al, Si, Zr, Ce and Fe are very similar to the values from the UCC model, even when standard deviations indicate slight enrichment or depletion. Zirconium has the best fit to the UCC model using both mean value and standard deviation. Lead and Cr are enriched in European soil when compared to the UCC model, but their standard deviation values span a large, particularly towards very low values, which can be interpreted as a lithological effect. GEMAS soil data have been normalized to Al and Na, taking into account themain lithologies of the UCC, in order to discriminate provenance sources. Additionally, sodium normalization highlights variations related to the soluble and insoluble behavior of some elements (e.g., K, Rb versus Ti, Al, Si, V, Y, Zr, Ba, and La, respectively), their reactivity (e.g, Fe, Mn, Zn) and association with carbonates (e.g., Ca and Sr). Maps of Europe showing the spatial distribution of normalized compositions and element ratios reveal difficulties with the use of classical element ratios because of the large lithological differences in compositions of soil parent material. The ratio maps and color composite images extracted from the GEMAS data can help to discriminate the main lithologies in Europe at the regional scale but need to be used with caution due to the complexity of superimposed processes responsible for the soil chemical composition.

Abstract

The authors' aim was to develop rapid and inexpensive regression models for the prediction of partitioning coefficients (K-d), defined as the ratio of the total or surface-bound metal/metalloid concentration of the solid phase to the total concentration in the solution phase. Values of K-d were measured for boric acid (B[OH](3)(0)) and selected added soluble oxoanions: molybdate (MoO42-), antimonate (Sb[OH](6-)), selenate (SeO42-), tellurate (TeO42-) and vanadate (VO43-). Models were developed using approximately 500 spectrally representative soils of the Geochemical Mapping of Agricultural Soils of Europe (GEMAS) program. These calibration soils represented the major properties of the entire 4813 soils of the GEMAS project. Multiple linear regression (MLR) from soil properties, partial least-squares regression (PLSR) using mid-infrared diffuse reflectance Fourier-transformed (DRIFT) spectra, and models using DRIFT spectra plus analytical pH values (DRIFT+pH), were compared with predicted log Kd+1 values. Apart from selenate (R-2=0.43), the DRIFT+pH calibrations resulted in marginally better models to predict log Kd+1 values (R-2=0.62-0.79), compared with those from PSLR-DRIFT (R-2=0.61-0.72) and MLR (R-2=0.54-0.79). The DRIFT+pH calibrations were applied to the prediction of log Kd+1 values in the remaining 4313 soils. An example map of predicted log Kd+1 values for added soluble MoO42- in soils across Europe is presented. The DRIFT+pH PLSR models provided a rapid and inexpensive tool to assess the risk of mobility and potential availability of boric acid and selected oxoanions in European soils. For these models to be used in the prediction of log Kd+1 values in soils globally, additional research will be needed to determine if soil variability is accounted on the calibration.
