Abstract ZnO nanoparticle–based multilayer nanocomposite films were fabricated on cationized woven cotton fabrics via layer-by-layer molecular self-assembly technique. For cationic surface charge, cotton fabrics were pretreated with 2,3-epoxypropyltrimethylammonium chloride (EP3MAC) by pad-batch method. XPS and SEM were used to examine the deposited nano-ZnO multilayer films on the cotton fabrics. The nano-ZnO films deposited on cotton fabrics exhibited excellent antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. The results also showed that the coated fabrics with nano-ZnO multilayer films enhanced the protection of cotton fabrics from UV radiation. Physical tests (tensile strength of weft and warp yarns, air permeability and whiteness values) were performed on the fabrics before and after the treatment with ZnO nanoparticles to evaluate the effect of layer-by-layer (LbL) process on cotton fabrics properties.

INTRODUCTION: Type D personality is characterised by the presence of social inhibition (SI) and negative affectivity (NA). Individuals high in social inhibition (SI) often experience feelings of discomfort, anxiety, stress, and lack of confidence. In contrast, individuals high in negative affectivity (NA) tend to experience unpleasant feelings. The aim of the present study was to determine the relationship between type D personality traits and social anxiety in individuals with alcohol and drug use disorders. METHODS: A cross-sectional was conducted with 140 individuals who were admitted to the XXX Health Sciences University Training and Research Hospital at the unit of Alcohol and Drug Addiction Treatment and Research Center between July and September in 2023. The Type D personality (DS-14) and Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale (LSAS) were applied to participants. A linear regression model is used to test the predictive effect of D Type Personality on social anxiety. This study aimed to determine how teachers use the communicative language approach in the learning-teaching process and measurement-evaluation dimensions while implementing the 2018 Primary English Course (Grades 2-8) Curriculum. Embedded single case study design, one of the qualitative designs, was used in this study. The study group included 14 primary education English language teachers instructing different grades in public schools in Eskişehir, Turkey. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with teachers and analyzed by content analysis. The findings demonstrated that communicative language approach could not be implemented in the classroom due to physical problems in the teaching-learning process, student reluctance and lack of readiness, teachers' initial failure to analyze the learner goals and styles, the lack of the predominant employment of the target language, partial inclusion of the activities determined by the communicative language approach in the course, preference of grammar instruction, partial utilization of group activities, the lack of using authentic materials, immediate correction of learner mistakes, inability to adopt the communicative language roles such as initialization of communication, providing resources and preference of traditional roles, and inability to measure the four basic language skills due to systemic measurement and evaluation errors.

ÖZ:Bu çalışmanın amacı flört ilişkilerindeki şiddet nedenlerini çiftlerin öz-bildirimi ile değerlendiren bir ölçeğin Türkçeye uyarlanmasıdır. Bu kapsamda Yakın İlişkilerde Şiddetin Nedenleri Ölçeğinin psikometrik özellikleri incelenmiştir. Çalışmaya yaş ortalaması 22.34 (S =1.80) olan, 157’si kadın 132’si erkek toplam 289 üniversite öğrencisi katılmıştır. Ölçeğin faktör yapısı Açımlayıcı Faktör Analizi ile incelenmiş, iki faktörlü yapı (içe atfedilen nedenler ve dışa atfedilen nedenler) Doğrulayıcı Faktör Analizi ile doğrulanmıştır. Ölçüt bağıntılı geçerliğin incelenmesi için Çiftler Arası Şiddetin Kabulü Ölçeği kullanılmıştır. Güvenirliği test etmek amacıyla ölçeğin Cronbach Alfa güvenirlik katsayıları hesaplanmıştır. Sonuçlar ölçeğin geçerlik ve güvenirliğinin yeterli düzeyde olduğunu göstermiştir. Bununla birlikte çalışmada, kadın ve erkeklerin farklı nedenlerle şiddet gösterdiği bulunmuştur. Şiddetin nedenleri, şiddetin kabulü ve flört şiddeti arasındaki ilişkiler incelenmiştir. Katılımcıların bildirdiği şiddet nedenlerinin oranı arttıkça, şiddetin kabulü ve flört şiddetine maruz bırakma da artmaktadır. Ayrıca içe ve dışa atfedilen şiddet nedenlerinin, şiddetin kabulünün ve bazı flört şiddeti alt boyutlarının cinsiyete göre farklılaştığı bulunmuştur. Çalışma sonuçlarının, yakın ilişkilerde bildirilen şiddet nedenlerinin anlaşılması ve şiddetin önlenmesini hedefleyen çeşitli müdahale alanları için katkı sağlayacağı düşünülmektedir. ABSTRACT:This study aims to adapt a scale that evaluates the causes of violence in dating relationships with the couple's self-report. In this context, the psychometric properties of the Reasons for Intimate Partner Violence Scale were examined. A total of 289 university students, 157 female and 132 male, with an average age of 22.34 (SD = 1.80) participated in the study. The scale's factor structure was examined by exploratory factor analysis, and the two-factor structure (internalized and externalized reasons) was confirmed by confirmatory factor analysis. Acceptance of Couples Violence Scale was used for criterion-related validity. The scale's Cronbach Alpha reliability coefficients were calculated to determine internal consistency. The results showed that the validity and reliability of the scale were sufficient. However, it was found that men and women show violence for different reasons in the study The relationships between causes of violence, acceptance of violence, and dating violence are also examined. As the rate of reasons for violence shown in close relationships increases, acceptance of violence and exposure to dating violence also increases. Also, it was found that internalized causes of violence, externalized causes of violence, acceptance of violence, and some dating violence sub-dimensions differ by gender. It is thought that the study's results will contribute to understanding the reasons for violence reported by an intimate partner and for valuable areas of intervention aimed at preventing dating violence.

ÖZ: Epiküros Helenistik Dönem hazcılık öğretisinin başlıca temsilcisidir. O, hazzın kendi başına bir iyi olduğu noktasında, Aristippos başta olmak üzere, birçok hazcı filozofla aynı görüştedir ancak mesele hazzın mahiyetini konuşmaya geldiğinde söz konusu filozofların çoğundan ayrılır. Nitekim Epiküros tek türden bedensel hazlar tasnifini yeterli görmemiş ve hazlar arasında niceliksel olanın yanında niteliksel bir sınıflamaya da yer vermiştir. Epiküros’a göre insan yaşamının amacı mutluluktur ve mutlu bir yaşam haz dolu bir yaşamdır, bununla birlikte yaşamın amacı olacak türden bir mutluluğa erişmek anlık doyumlar içeren salt bedensel hazlarla değil, daha çok yaşam boyu sürmesi beklenen kalıcı hazlarla mümkündür. İşte, bu çalışmada Epiküros’un hazcılık öğretisinin sınırlarını çizdiği türden mutlu bir yaşama erişmede erdemlerin rolünün ne olduğu araştırılmıştır. Epiküros erdemlerin mutlu bir yaşamın ayrılmaz bir parçası olduğunu iddia etmiştir ve dahası bu iddia bir yönüyle araştırmacılara Epiküros felsefesinde erdemli bir yaşamın kendi başına bir amaç olup olmadığını düşündürmüştür. Ne var ki Epiküros’un yaşamın nihai amacının mutluluk olduğu iddiası kesin bir dille ortadadır ve bu iddia teorisinin diğer unsurlarını mutluluğa göre araçsal bir konuma indirgemektedir. Dolayısıyla Epiküros’un hazcılık öğretisinde erdemler, kendilerine yüklenen anlam ne kadar güçlü olursa olsun, temelde araçsal bir değere sahiptir. ABSTRACT:In Hellenistic Period Epicurus was the main representative of the hedonism doctrine. He agrees with many hedonist philosophers, especially with Aristippos, on the point that pleasure is a good in itself, but he differs from most of the philosophers in question when it comes to the nature of pleasure. Hence, Epicurus did not satisfied with the clasification that based only on corporeal pleasures and included a qualitative classification as well as a quantitative one among the pleasures. According to Epicurus, the purpose of human life is happiness and a happy life is a life full of pleasure. At the same time, achieving the kind of happines that could correspond to purpose of life would possible with permanent pleasures that are expected to last throughout life, not just with corporeal ones. In this study, the role of virtues in reaching to a happy life, framed by the doctrine of hedonsim on the lines of epicureanism, has been investigated. Epicurus has claimed that virtues were an integral part of a happy life, and moreover, this claim, in a way, has made researchers think whether a virtuous life was an end in itself in the philosophy of Epicurus. However, the claim of Epicurus according to which the ultimate purpose of life is happiness is absolutely clear, and this claim reduces the other elements realitive to happiness in his theory to an instrumental position. Therefore, in hedonist theory of Epicurus virtues essentially have an instrumental value and the strenght attributed to them does not matter.

Brugada syndrome (BrS) is a rare yet serious condition that can lead to death if not properly managed. Consequently, anesthesiologists must exercise special caution during the perioperative period. This report shares our experience with a patient diagnosed with type 3 BrS. We managed the intraoperative anesthesia in a 27-year-old patient scheduled for elective lumbar discectomy surgery. The patient had no additional comorbidities apart from BrS. After making the necessary preparations, the patient underwent surgery. Throughout the operation, the patient’s hemodynamics remained stable. During the postoperative follow-up in the coronary intensive care unit, the patient reported experiencing chest pain and palpitations. However, no arrhythmia was detected, except for tachycardia. The patient was discharged after 48 h once clinical stability was achieved. In contrast to our case, patients who exhibit symptoms such as syncope, palpitations, and a family history indicative of cardiac diseases but have not been diagnosed with BrS should be thoroughly evaluated. It is crucial to ensure appropriate physiological and pharmacological conditions for these patients.

Tüm kutsal metinlerde olduğu gibi Kur’an-ı Kerim’de de sosyal, kültürel, tarihî ve mekânsal birtakım unsurlar yer almaktadır. Bazıları doğal mekân olmaları itibariyle Kuran’dan önce fiziki anlamda varken bazıları da gönderilen ayetlere bağlı olarak inşa edilmiş veya yeniden anlam kazanmıştır. Zaman içinde bu mekânların bir kısmı birer toplumsal sahne görevi görürken diğer kısmı da karar verici roller üstlenerek bireyi ve toplumu şekillendirmiştir Kur’an'daki bu mekânsal zenginlik, Kur’an’ın özellikle sosyal bilimciler için önemli bir kaynak görevi görmesini sağlamıştır. Bu mekânların çeşitliliği de mekâna dair farklı bakış açılarının oluşması ve her mekânın özgün bir şekilde okunmasına olarak tanımıştır. Bu yönüyle Kur’an’ın önemli bir rehber olup kutsal mekânların gösterildiğini söylemek mümkündür. Kur’an ve mekân bağlamında hazırlanan bu çalışmada Kur’an’da sözü edilen bazı mekânların sosyolojik yönü detaylı bir şekilde incelenmiştir. Bu mekânların hangi referanslarla inşa edildiği ne şekilde anlam kazandığı ve inşa edildikten sonra ne tür toplumsal ilişki ağları ürettiği soruları üzerinde durulmuştur. Sözü edilen kutsal mekânların kamusal alanda karşılaşılan diğer mekânlardan ayrılan veya benzeyen yönleri belirlenmiş, birey ve toplumun kimlik kazanmasında bu mekânların ne tür roller üstlendiği ortaya çıkarılmıştır. Bazı doğal mekânların Kur’an ile birlikte anlamlı bir alana evrilmesi, birey ve toplum yaşamında önemli bir yer edinmesi süreci açıklanmıştır. Bunun yanında sözü edilen mekânlar aracılığıyla bireyin sahip olduğu alt kimlikleri geri planda bırakarak nasıl bir üst kimlik inşa ettiği ve bu kimliğin sürdürülmesinde söz konusu mekânların rolünün ne olduğu tartışılmıştır. Çalışmada nitel araştırma yöntemleri arasında yer alan doküman analizi tekniği kullanılmıştır. Doküman olarak da Kur'an kaynak metin olarak seçilmiştir. İlk olarak Kur’an baştan sona incelenmiş ve kutsal mekânların geçtiği 20 farklı sûre ve 58 ayet tespit edilmiştir. Bu ayetler içerik analizi tekniği ile incelenmiş ve öne çıkan temalar kodlanmıştır. İlgili ayetlerde doğrudan veya dolaylı olarak zikredilen 12 kutsal mekân ile belirlenen temalar arasındaki ilişki açıklanmaya çalışılmıştır. Böylelikle çalışma, sözü edilen mekânlar üzerinde temellendirilmiştir. Çalışmanın sonucunda söz konusu mekânların sıradan mekânlardan farklı olarak doğrudan ilahî referanslarla yeniden anlam kazandığı veya inşa edildiği tespit edilmiştir. Bu yeniden anlam kazanma sürecinde toplumsal hafızayı aktarmaya yönelik güçlü bağların olduğu görülmüştür. Bu mekânların birey ve toplum kimliğini şekillendirme noktasında ve kültürün sonraki nesillere aktarılmasında önemli bir rol oynadığı anlaşılmıştır. Ayrıca bu mekânların aidiyet oluşturarak bireyleri ortak bir çatı altında topladığı, ortak duyguların oluşmasına zemin hazırladığı tespit edilmiştir. Tüm bunların yanında bahsi geçen bu kutsal mekânların diğer mekânlar gibi sosyal, kültürel, siyasî ve ekonomik anlamda tüketildiği, belli dönemlerde metalaştırıldığı gerçeği ortaya çıkmıştır. Ayrıca bu mekânların edindikleri kutsallıktan dolayı birleştiren, bütünleştiren ve inancı sonraki kuşaklara aktaran bir yönünün olduğu görülmüştür. Sahip olduğu bu özelliklerden dolayı ayrıştırıcı bir yönü de ortaya çıkmış ve bu mekânların toplumsal bir mücadele alanı oldukları tespit edilmiştir.

Adalet tartışması ele alınır alınmaz çözülebilecek veya tek defada tüketilebilecek bir mesele değildir. Öteden beri ortaya konulan birçok adalet temellendirmesi bu durumun açık bir göstergesidir. Nitekim bunlardan biri de bu çalışmanın konusu olarak Thomas Hobbes’un adalet temellendirmesidir. Hobbes felsefesi bir bütün olarak maddi bir zeminde yükselir ve kaynağı ne olursa olsun herhangi bir verili değer kabul etmez. Dolayısıyla bu sistemde, adalet dahil, herhangi bir verili değere yer yoktur. Değer olarak kabul edilen ne varsa Leviathan’ın, yani devletin doğuşuyla bir standarta kavuşur veya gerçek bir varlık kazanır. Hobbes’un ‘adalet’i Leviathan ile birlikte temellenir. Leviathan’ın doğuşu adaletin doğuşu; onun temelleri adaletin temelleridir. İnsan doğasının bencil bir betimi ile başlayan bu temellendirme Leviathan’ın mutlak adalet standartı olarak ilan edilmesiyle tamamlanır. Leviathan öncesinde ne adalet ne de adaletsizlik söz konusudur; herkesin her şeye hakkı olduğu bir ortamda bu tür nitelemeler anlamsızdır. Ne zaman ki Leviathan kurulur adalet veya adaletsizlikten o zaman söz edilebilir çünkü adil ve adil olmayanın nihai ölçüsü onun buyrukları/yasalarıdır. This paper examines the impact of firms' environmental, social, and governance (ESG) activities on financial reporting quality (FRQ). The study uses 45,877 firm-year observations from 65 countries between 2003 and 2021. In the research model, firm characteristics and macroeconomic and institutional structure characteristics of the countries are controlled for. This study finds that firms with higher ESG scores have higher FRQ. Additionally, our mediation analysis indicates that financial distress costs serve as a crucial mechanism through which ESG influences FRQ. Our findings are robust after accounting for alternative measures of FRQ, different sampling scenarios, endogeneity issues, and simultaneity bias.

Abstract Introduction Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) are life-threatening acute mucocutaneous disorders usually triggered by drugs. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the factors affecting mortality in patients with SJS-TEN. Methods Our study is a retrospective cohort study, analyzing data collected from a total of 12 tertiary care centers between April 2012 and April 2022. Results The study included 59 males and 107 females, a total of 166 patients, with an average age of 50.91 ± 21.25 years. Disease classification was TEN in 50% of cases, SJS in 33.1%, and SJS-TEN overlap in 16.9%. The average SCORTEN within the first 24 h was 2.44 ± 1.42. Supportive care was provided to 99.4% of patients. The most commonly used systemic immunomodulatory treatments were systemic steroids (84.3%), IVIG (intravenous immunoglobulin) (49.3%), and cyclosporine (38.6%). Plasmapheresis was administered to five patients. While 66.3% of patients were discharged, 24.1% resulted in exitus. Our comparative analysis of survivors and deceased patients found no effect of systemic steroids, IVIG, and cyclosporine treatments on mortality. Univariate analysis revealed that the SCORTEN scores on days 1 and 3 as well as the rates of detachment at the onset and during follow-up were significantly higher in deceased patients compared to survivors. The rates of fever, positive blood cultures, and systemic antibiotic use were higher in deceased patients compared to survivors. The presence of comorbidities, diabetes, and malignancy were significantly more common in deceased patients. Multivariate regression analysis indicated that over SCORTEN 2, the mortality risk exponentially rose with each SCORTEN increment, culminating in an 84-fold increase in mortality at SCORTEN 5–6 (odds ratio [95% confidence interval]: 13.902–507.537, p

Abstract Background Copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), and the copper/zinc ratio (Cu/Zn), which have been studied in gastrointestinal disorders of humans, may facilitate disease prognosis. Objective Evaluate the predictive potential of Cu, Zn, cobalamin, and serum amyloid A (SAA) as prognostic indicators in cats with feline panleukopenia (FPV) on admission. Animals Client‐owned cats diagnosed with FPV and controls. Methods Serum Cu and Zn concentrations were assessed using the spectrophotometric method and serum concentrations of SAA and cobalamin were measured by chemiluminescent immunoassay. Results On admission, survivor cats with FPV had significantly higher serum Cu and SAA concentrations and Cu/Zn ratios and significantly lower serum Zn and cobalamin concentrations than controls. Furthermore, non‐survivor cats with FPV had significantly higher serum Cu and SAA concentrations and Cu/Zn ratios and significantly lower cobalamin concentrations than survivors and controls. Prognostic thresholds were calculated, with positive predictive value (PPV) for survival of 90% for Cu (≥120.3 μg/dL), 90% for Cu/Zn (≥1.34), 90% for cobalamin (≤430.4 pg/mL), and 90% for SAA (≥0.85 mg/L). Conclusions and Clinical Importance Cu (0.93 area under curve [AUC]), Cu/Zn (0.95 AUC), cobalamin (0.98 AUC), and SAA (0.98 AUC) were excellent biomarkers for predicting prognosis in cats with FPV. Their effectiveness, as assessed by sensitivity (100%), specificity (80%), AUC (0.98), and PPV (90%) from receiver operating characteristic analysis, emphasizes the performance of cobalamin and SAA.

BACKGROUND: Different organs respond differently to cisplatin (CDDP)-induced toxicity. Oleuropein (OLE) is a natural phenolic antioxidant. The purpose of this study was to determine the potential protective effect of OLE against CDDP-induced ototoxicity by evaluating expression of genes associated with deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) damage and repair in cochlear cells. METHODS: House Ear Institute-Organ of Corti 1 (HEI-OC1) cells were treated using CDDP, OLE, and OLE–CDDP. The water-soluble tetrazolium salt assay was used for monitoring cell viability. Deoxyribonucleic acid damage in cells due to the CDDP, OLE, and combination treatments was determined using a flow-cytometric kit. The change in the expression of 84 genes associated with CCDP, OLE, and OLE–CDDP treatments that induced DNA damage was tested using the reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction array. Changes ≥3-fold were considered significant. RESULTS: House Ear Institute-Organ of Corti 1 cell viability was significantly reduced by CDDP. The OLE–CDDP combination restored the cell viability. Cisplatin increased the H2AX ratio, while OLE–CDDP combination decreased it. Some of the DNA damage-associated genes whose expression was upregulated with CDDP were downregulated with OLE–CDDP, while the expression of genes such as Gadd45g and Rev1 was further downregulated. The expression of DNA repair-related Abl1, Dbd2, Rad52, and Trp53 genes was downregulated with CDDP, whereas their expression was upregulated with OLE–CDDP treatment. CONCLUSION: In cochlear cells, the OLE–CDDP combination downregulated DNA damage-associated gene expression relative to that upregulated mainly by CDDP. The results revealed that OLE has a potential protective effect on CDDP-induced ototoxicity in cochlear cells by altering the expression of DNA damage-related genes.
