Beta-hydroxy silanes rather than alpha-hydroxy silanes are produced by the reaction of (triphenylsilyl)ethylene oxide with Grignard reagents, such as EtMgBr and PhMgBr. The beta-hydroxy silanes are formed by rearrangement and trapping. The reaction of (triphenylsilyl)ethylene oxide with MgBr2 produces bromohydrin by alpha ring-opening of the epoxide. The reactions are similar to those of trimethylsilyl epoxides with Grignard reagents. Reactions of the epoxide with Grignard Reagents involve alpha rather than beta ring-opening.

Background Hydatid disease or cystic echinococcosis (CE) is caused by the larval stages of the cestode parasite Echinococcus granulosus. The objectives of this study were to estimate the prevalence of seropositivity and to identify the risk factors associated with the disease among humans in Khartoum State, Central Sudan. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted between November 2017 and April 2018. A total of 305 randomly selected consenting participants from three localities were included in the current investigation using a multistage probability sampling method. An in-house enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was used to detect immunoglobulin G antibodies to E. granulosus. The χ2 test and logistic regression analysis were used to determine the risk factors associated with CE seropositivity. Results A seroprevalence of 6.5% (20/305) was recorded among humans in Khartoum State, Central Sudan. Age (odds ratio [OR] 16.61 [confidence interval {CI} 2.21 to 117.92], p=0.006), locality (OR 3.08 [CI 1.42 to 22.54], p=0.011) and contact with dogs (OR 2.34 [CI 0.026 to 0.646], p=0.013) were recorded as potential risk factors for seropositivity to CE in the study area. Conclusions The seroprevalence of CE (6.5%) is high among humans in Khartoum State, Central Sudan. Improved surveillance is necessary to optimize control and prevention strategies for CE as an important neglected zoonotic disease among the human population in the study area of Central Sudan. Objective: Congenital hypothyroidism (CH) is a common cause of preventable severe neurocognitive impairment in children. Previously conducted studies describing the natural history of CH in Saudi Arabia were either of shorter duration or a limited number of patients. In this study, we aim to assess our experience in the clinical course and therapeutic outcome of CH in two large tertiary centers in Saudi Arabia. Methods: This is a retrospective chart review of patients <18 years of age diagnosed with CH at King Abdulaziz Medical City in Jeddah and Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, between 2000 and 2018. Data were collected from the patients’ medical records, including epidemiological, clinical, laboratory, and radiological features as well as a long-term outcome of CH. Statistical analysis was carried out using the JMP statistical software. This study was approved by the Institutional Review Board (IRB) at King Abdullah International Medical Research Center (KAIMRC). Results: Out of the 71 cases, 53.5% were female, and 80.3% of these cases were diagnosed in the 1st week of life. The estimated incidence of CH is 1:2470 in the two study centers. Ectopic thyroid (43%, n = 25/58), dyshormonogenesis (34.5%, n = 20/58), and thyroid agenesis and hypoplasia (22.4%, n = 13/58). Learning difficulty was significantly associated with delayed treatment onset (P = 0.044) and lower compliance with treatment (P = 0.001). Conclusion: In our study, the incidence of dyshormonogenesis in CH is higher than international rates (34.5% vs. 20%), possibly because of consanguinity. Effective neonatal screening program facilitates early diagnosis that leads to prompt management of CH and avoidance of long-term outcome of neurocognitive impairment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: An important goal in treating children with congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) is to achieve a normal final adult height (FH). The aim of this study was to describe the clinical presentations and evaluate linear growth and possible factors affecting it in children with CAH. Methods: This is a retrospective study of 56 patients with CAH followed up in a tertiary center for 11 years. Patient's data including demographics, clinical, anthropometric, and laboratory information at presentation and during follow-up period were collected from medical records. Results: Fifty-six children (31 females) with CAH were seen at KAMC-Jeddah over 11-year period and 91% were 21-hydroxylase deficient. Of these, 46.4% had hyponatremia and 28.6% had hyperkalemia (21.4% had hyponatremia and hyperkalemia) at presentation. Positive family history was documented in 53.6%. Ambiguous genitalia were present in 72% of females and the majority required corrective surgery. Males had significantly decreased HtSDS versus females and females had significantly higher body mass index. The HtSDS of children who had had higher 17OHP or salt-losing crisis during treatment was significantly lower than those who had normal 17OHP and those who did not have salt-losing crisis, respectively. Conclusion: The final height outcome in our patients with CAH treated with glucocorticoids is lower than the population norm. Proper control of the disease clinically and biochemically through strict compliance to medical therapy as well as close clinical and laboratory monitoring is an important key to achieve normal final adult height in these patients. Garlic extract has been established to enhance the growth and yield of some plant crops, but little is known about its content of phytohormones. A field study was carried out, in two growing seasons, to evaluate the performance of snap bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) cv. ‘Paulista’ in terms of growth traits, biochemical parameters, hormonal status and yield characteristics in response to two-time foliar spray at 30 and 45 days after sowing with three concentrations (1:40, 1:20 and 1:10) of garlic cloves extract (GCE). The experiment was designed in completely randomized blocks in a factorial arrangement with three replicates. The hormonal analysis indicated that GCE contains high levels of various phytohormones particularly salicylates, auxins, and gibberellins. Plant height, leaf area, leaves number, plant weight, flowers number and leaf and pod chemical compositions were significantly enhanced in response to GCE. The high dose of GCE caused the maximum increase in number of pods, pod fresh weight as well as the total pod yield. This stimulating effect of GCE may be due not only to its nutritional factors but also to its richness of phytohormones and phenolic compounds, and it can be further used as a plant growth promoter (PGP). Increasing growth and productivity of food crops via safe biostimulants is a very important issue in the current years. This study aimed to investigate the potential of moringa leaf extract (MLE) in improving the performance of snap bean (Phaseolus vulgarisL.) cv. ‘Paulista’ under field conditions. Hormonal analysis of MLE revealed its richness of various classes of phytohormones particularly salicylates. The results revealed that all MLE concentrations had a positive effect on growth, biochemical, yield, and yield related traits as well as yield quality of snap bean compared to control, and the effect was dose-dependent. Moreover, increasing pods yield of snap bean may be related to gibberellins (GA7) content than other plant hormones. In conclusion, the leaf extract of moringa provides a good source of phytohormones that have a positive role to stimulate growth and productivity of snap bean plants. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the seroprevalence of coinfections with bovine herpes virus-1 (BHV-1), bovine viral diarrhea (BVD), bluetoungue virus (BTV) and bovine herpes virus-4 (BHV-4) in cattle with reproductive problems in Sudan, and to determine the relation of single or mixed seropositivity with abortion, infertility and death after birth. Materials and methods: Meta-analysis of the results from our earlier serosurveys conducted with a total of 688 dairy cattle was carried out in order to determine prevalence of seropositivity of single and mixed (coinfection) viral infections. Reults: The meta-analysis of the data indicated high seroprevalence of coinfections with various combinations of these agents; only few animals were singly infected. An infection with BHV-1 was observed to be higher than the prevalence of associations between BHV-1 and the other three viral agents. Prevalence of seropositivities to coinfection with BHV-1/BTV; BHV-1/BVD; BHV-1/BTV/BVD were the highest while seropositivities prevalences that involved BHV-4 were much lower. The highest abortion rates were encountered in coinfections with BHV-1/BVD/BTV (31%) and BHV-1/BVD/BTV/BHV-4 (30%) while most infertility cases were noticed in coinfection with BHV- 1/BVD/BTV (44%) and BHV-1/BVD/BTV/BHV-4 (21%), and coinfections with the four viruses were encountered in most of the death after birth cases (25%). Overall mixed infections with BHV-1/BVD/BTV (34%) and BHV- 1/BVD/BTV/BHV-4 (22.5%) were involved in the majority of reproductive problems studied. Conclusion: Mixed infections constitutes the vast majority of cases and are involved in the majority of reproductive disorders investigated. The high prevalence of seropositivity to all of the four viruses should call for an intervention strategy to reduce the impact of these viruses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
