Valle Giumentina est un gisement des Abruzzes du Paléolithique ancien et moyen en plein air, fouillé brièvement dans les années 1950 par le Professeur A. M. Radmilli de l’Université de Pise, en collaboration avec le géologue J. Demangeot. Sept horizons archéologiques ont été mis au jour en contexte globalement lacustre, à la faveur d’une ravine profonde qui a incisé les dépôts du pléistocène jusqu’à 25 m de profondeur1. Dans le cadre du programme quinquennal de l’École française de Rome (2012-2016), les recherches pluridisciplinaires ont repris sur le terrain en collaboration avec la Soprintendenza per i Beni archeologici dell’Abruzzo (S. Agostini) afin de préciser la chronostratigraphie du gisement, de déterminer la nature technique des industries lithiques présentes et les modalités d’occupation du site. Il s’agit à terme, d’insérer ces données renouvelées dans le contexte régional, national et européen du Paléolithique ancien et moyen, puisque Valle Giumentina est depuis sa découverte, considéré comme un gisement de référence à chacune de ces échelles. Lors de la première mission de septembre et octobre 2012, un carottage a été effectué jusqu’à 45 m de profondeur dans les dépôts quaternaires de Valle Giumentina et le premier niveau noirâtre, apparaissant à plus de 3,5 m de profondeur, a fait l’objet d’une fouille manuelle sur 1 m2. Cette fouille a livré les premières industries en contexte stratigraphique dans le cadre de ce nouveau programme de recherche. La coupe a été avivée dans la ravine jusqu’à 7 m de profondeur. La deuxième mission (22 avril – 10 juin 2013), quant à elle, avait trois objectifs majeurs, tout à fait atteints : fouiller le premier « paléosol » sur une aire significative, compléter les données chronostratigraphiques et déterminer la morphologie du bassin calcaire de Valle Giumentina et la géométrie des dépôts (fig. 1).

Rehabilitation and secondary prevention programs are recognized as an essential part of the overall care of patients with cardiovascular disease. They consist of multidisciplinary strategies aiming at the reduction of modifiable risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Cardiac rehabilitation includes non-pharmacological interventions as: Patients’ evaluation. Nutritional counseling. Risk factors management (serum lipids, blood pressure, weight, diabetes, smoking). Psychosocial interventions. Physical activity and cardiovascular physical training counseling. Their effectiveness in the reduction of mortality through the decrease of risk factors has been proven in the last twenty years. Guidelines on appropriate and well-framed interventions have been released and nutritional interventions have a ringside seat in all programs. During 2007, the Italian Association of Dietitians, ANDID, created a working group of expert dietitians, with the goals of making a review of available scientific literature and of elaborating a Professional Position Papers on the role of Dietitian in cardiac rehabilitation and prevention. This Position Paper retrieves and remarks the available evidence that are important for the dietitians, according to their professional role and their contribution in the management of the topic.

The Biguglia lagoon is a shallow Mediterranean coastal ecosystem where eutrophication is increasing for years. A channel supplying freshwater was cleared in 2009 to enhance lagoon water circulation and alleviate dystrophic crises. Monthly monitoring was started in 2010 to document the impacts of this action on abiotic characteristics and phytoplankton communities. Three stations were surveyed (by microscopy and HPLC). Evidence suggests that this operation had an unexpected outcome. Salinity footprints indicated the succession of three main hydrological sequences that depended on rainfall and circulation pattern. Diatoms and dinoflagellates dominated the first sequence, characterized by heavy rainfall, while Prorocentrum minimum became progressively the dominant species in the second period (increasing salinities) with extensive bloom over the whole lagoon (5.93*10-(5)cells·L(-1)) during the third period. These phytoplankton successions and community structures underline the risk of pernicious effects arising from remediation efforts, in the present case based on increasing freshwater inputs.

Les activités réalisées durant la première opération de terrain à Valle Giumentina en septembre 2012 ont permis de récolter du matériel en grande quantité. Il alimentera les études pluridisciplinaires qui sont effectuées en laboratoire et qui se poursuivront durant les prochaines années. L’analyse de cette séquence clé du Quaternaire italien renouvellera de façon importante le cadre chronostratigraphique régional. Surtout, elle permettra une description à haute résolution de nouvelles archives sédimentaires de référence, qui prendront leur place dans la reconstitution des paléoenvironnements quaternaires tant à l’échelle du bassin méditerranéen qu’à celle de l’Europe. Ce travail de longue haleine a donc débuté grâce au travail conjugué de chercheurs, de bénévoles et le concours de différentes institutions qui se sont impliquées dans le projet. Le travail de terrain se poursuivra en 2013 pour enrichir les premières données notamment géochronologiques (poursuite de la mise au jour de la coupe, prospections géophysiques). Des datations radiométriques (OSL sur quartz) sont programmées et dans cette perspective une collaboration avec des chercheurs du laboratoire IRAMAT- CRP2A de Bordeaux et le LSCE CNRS-CEA de Gif-sur-Yvette est initiée. Des tests de scan 3D devraient être effectués en collaboration avec le CEPAM de Nice. Mais l’opération de terrain 2013 sera avant tout archéologique. L’aire de fouille sera agrandie et les niveaux inférieurs seront recherchés et fouillés, même sur une surface limitée. L’étude des industries lithiques découvertes sera complétée par l’étude des collections issues de la fouille Radmilli et de sites voisins.

Ultramafic rocks recovered from Hole 1268a, Ocean Drilling Program Leg 209, to the south of the 15 degrees 20'N Fracture Zone on the Mid-Atlantic ridge have experienced a complex history of melt depletion and subsequent interaction with a series of fluids under varying temperature and pH conditions. After intense melt depletion, varying degrees of serpentinization at 100-200 degrees C took place, initially under seawater-like pH conditions. Subsequently, interaction with a higher temperature (300-350 degrees C) fluid with low (4-5) pH and low MgO/SiO2 resulted in the heterogeneous alteration of these serpentinites to talc-bearing ultramafic lithologies. The proximity of the currently active, high temperature Logatchev hydrothermal field, located on the opposite flank of the Mid-Atlantic ridge, suggests that unlike more distal localities sampled during ODP Leg 209, Hole 1268a has experienced Si-metasomatism (i.e. talc-alteration) by a Logatchev-like hydrothermal fluid. Serpentinite strontium isotope ratios were not materially shifted by interaction with the subsequent high-T fluid, despite the likelihood that this fluid had locally interacted with mid-ocean ridge gabbro. Sr-87/Sr-86 in the ultramafic lithologies of Hole 1268a are close to that of seawater (c.0.709) and even acid leached serpentinites retain Sr-87/Sr-86 in excess of 0.707, indistinguishable from Logatchev hydrothermal fluid. On the other hand, boron isotope ratios appear to have been shifted from sea-water-like values in the serpentinites (delta B-11 = c.+40 parts per thousand) to much lighter values in talc-altered serpentinites (delta B-11 = +9 to +20 parts per thousand). This is likely a consequence of the effects of changing ambient pH and temperature during the mineralogical transition from serpentine to talc. Heterogeneous boron isotope systematics have consequences for the composition of ultramafic portions of the lithosphere returned to the convecting mantle by subduction. Inhomogeneities in delta B-11, [B] and mineralogy introduce significant uncertainties in the prediction of the composition of slab fluids released during the early-to mid-stages of subduction.
