102. An Exploration of Teacher and Student Perceptions of Blended Learning in Four Secondary Mathematics Classrooms

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic forced many teachers around the world to make a sudden switch from face-to-face to online teaching. This shift in practice has provided an opportunity to reconsider how technology use in mathematics education can be utilised to improve student engagement. In this study, we explore four case studies of Australian secondary mathematics classrooms conducted prior to the COVID-19 pandemic to examine how teachers are using blended learning approaches and how their students perceive these pedagogical practices. Findings across all four sites indicate that technology use expands student opportunities to engage with mathematics learning through the provision of multiple pathways and methods of access. Specifically, we find evidence supporting the use of blended classroom teaching strategies to provide differentiation and personalised learning approaches; visualisation and dynamic manipulation of mathematics concepts; and alternative methods for teacher-student feedback and communication. We argue that the student learning experience in mathematics can be enhanced through a variety of blended learning approaches by allowing for diverse points of access to learning opportunities which are more closely aligned to individual learning needs and free from the temporal constraints of the classroom.

Abstract

In 2018, the state Kindergarten sector in Malta (3-5 years) was influenced by the shift from a prescriptive to an emergent curriculum, and the increasing use of eTwinning - a particular scenario that is research-worthy. Through one narrative inquiry of a Kindergarten educator who decided to 'marry' the emergent curriculum and eTwinning in practice, this paper aims to systematically track down the educator's experience of this integration. Findings indicate initial and ongoing challenges overshadowed by sustained success through the synergy created from the philosophically fused emergent curriculum and the eTwinning concept. This study conceptualises the birth of an innovative approach and surfaces a rediscovery of Froebel's 19th-century Kindergarten.

Abstract

The runtime analysis of decentralised software requires instrumentation methods that are scalable, but also minimally invasive. This paper presents a new algorithm that instruments choreographed outline monitors. Our instrumentation algorithm scales and reorganises monitors dynamically as the system executes. We demonstrate the implementability of choreographed outline instrumentation and compare it to inline instrumentation, subject to rigorous and comprehensive benchmarking. Our results debunk the general notion that outline monitoring is necessarily infeasible, and show that our implementation induces runtime overhead comparable to that of its inline counterpart for many practical cases.

114. Selectivity control in anodic gas evolving reactions on Ru based oxides

Abstract

Effective control of anodic gas evolving processes like, e.g. oxygen evolution and chlorine evolution is important from both fundamental as well as of applied point of view. The oxygen evolution process is of crucial importance in steering the water electrolysis needed for renewable energy storage. The chlorine evolution then is at core of chlor–alkali and chlorate applications. Both electrode processes take part at similar potentials and also are catalyzed by the same type of materials. It is generally known that kinetic hindrances of four electron oxygen evolution are not only limiting possible deployment of water electrolyzers in replacement of fossil fuels, but also are responsible for kinetic preference of chlorine evolution as prevailing anodic reaction in chloride containing solutions. An effective control of the catalyst selectivity in these competing reactions can be seen as the key enabler of the use of brackish or even sea water electrolytic hydrogen production. This workshop will discuss the selectivity tendencies of Ru based oxides in parallel chlorine and oxygen evolution reactions. on identification of key catalyst parameters needed to steer selectively gas evolving reaction on Ru oxides substituted with Mn and Ti prepared by the spray freeze freeze drying approach and their behavior in parallel oxygen and chlorine evolution reactions. The selectivity of these single phase materials with rutile structure based on RRDE and DEMS measurements will be rationalized in terms of chemical composition, local structure and prevailing mechanism of the oxygen evolving process. It will be shown that the overall electrocatalytic activity of Ru oxides increases with increasing content of the substituting transition metal. The increasing presence of Ti and Mn has, however an opposite effect on the selectivity. While the presence of Ti in substituted materials supports the selectivity towards CER the presence of Mn leads to an increase the selectivity towards oxygen evolution in acidic chloride containing solutions. The analysis of reaction orders for both competing reactions with respect to chloride concentration indicates that the overall selectivity is in fact controlled by the oxygen evolution process regardless of the chemical composition. The high selectivity towards oxygen evolution reaction coincides with low tendency of prepared phases to evolve oxygen via lattice oxygen activation (LOER). The experimental behaviour is further discussed from the theoretical point of view by DFT analysis of the reactivity of the Ru-Me-O surfaces where Me stands for Ti, Mn and Ni respectively.

Abstract

Grapevine trunk diseases (GTDs) are currently limiting grapevine productivity in many vineyards worldwide. As no chemical treatments are registered to control GTDs, biocontrol agents are being tested against these diseases. Esquive® WP, based on the fungus Trichoderma atroviride I-1237 strain, is the first biocontrol product registered in France to control GTDs. In this study, we determine whether, following grapevine pruning wound treatments with Esquive® WP, changes occurred or not in the indigenous microbial communities that are colonizing grapevine wood. Over a 6-year period, Esquive® WP was applied annually to pruning wounds on three grapevine cultivars located in three different regions. Wood samples were collected at 2 and 10 months after the Esquive® WP treatments. Based on MiSeq high-throughput sequencing analyses, the results showed that specific microbial communities were linked to each ‘region/cultivar’ pairing. In certain cases, a significant modification of alpha diversity indexes and the relative abundance of some microbial taxa were observed between treated and non-treated grapevines 2 months after Esquive® WP treatment. However, these modifications disappeared over time, i.e., 10 months post-treatment. This result clearly showed that Esquive® WP pruning wood treatment did not induce significant changes in the grapevine wood’s microbiome, even after 6 years of recurrent applications on the plants.

Abstract

PurposeThe Groningen International Study on Sentinel nodes in Vulvar cancer (GROINSS-V)-II investigated whether inguinofemoral radiotherapy is a safe alternative to inguinofemoral lymphadenectomy (IFL) in vulvar cancer patients with a metastatic sentinel node (SN).MethodsGROINSS-V-II was a prospective multicenter phase-II single-arm treatment trial, including patients with early-stage vulvar cancer (diameter < 4 cm) without signs of lymph node involvement at imaging, who had primary surgical treatment (local excision with SN biopsy). Where the SN was involved (metastasis of any size), inguinofemoral radiotherapy was given (50 Gy). The primary end point was isolated groin recurrence rate at 24 months. Stopping rules were defined for the occurrence of groin recurrences.ResultsFrom December 2005 until October 2016, 1,535 eligible patients were registered. The SN showed metastasis in 322 (21.0%) patients. In June 2010, with 91 SN-positive patients included, the stopping rule was activated because the isolated groin recurrence rate in this group went above our predefined threshold. Among 10 patients with an isolated groin recurrence, nine had SN metastases > 2 mm and/or extracapsular spread. The protocol was amended so that those with SN macrometastases (> 2 mm) underwent standard of care (IFL), whereas patients with SN micrometastases (≤ 2 mm) continued to receive inguinofemoral radiotherapy. Among 160 patients with SN micrometastases, 126 received inguinofemoral radiotherapy, with an ipsilateral isolated groin recurrence rate at 2 years of 1.6%. Among 162 patients with SN macrometastases, the isolated groin recurrence rate at 2 years was 22% in those who underwent radiotherapy, and 6.9% in those who underwent IFL (P = .011). Treatment-related morbidity after radiotherapy was less frequent compared with IFL.ConclusionInguinofemoral radiotherapy is a safe alternative for IFL in patients with SN micrometastases, with minimal morbidity. For patients with SN macrometastasis, radiotherapy with a total dose of 50 Gy resulted in more isolated groin recurrences compared with IFL.

Abstract

This project aims to provide a novel and compact pollution detection, monitoring, and analysis system architecture to monitor marine fields and detect different types of marine pollution that includes hardware and software components. The system will mainly consist of a Shore Control Centre (SCC) and unmanned surface vessels, both equipped with multi-sensor technology and artificial intelligence-based solutions. The SCC will play a key role as a central network hub of the system.

Abstract

Abstract Despite initial responses to hormone treatment, metastatic prostate cancer invariably evolves to a lethal state. To characterize the intra-patient evolutionary relationships of metastases that evade treatment, we perform genome-wide copy number profiling and bespoke approaches targeting the androgen receptor (AR) on 167 metastatic regions from 11 organs harvested post-mortem from 10 men who died from prostate cancer. We identify diverse and patient-unique alterations clustering around the AR in metastases from every patient with evidence of independent acquisition of related genomic changes within an individual and, in some patients, the co-existence of AR-neutral clones. Using the genomic boundaries of pan-autosome copy number changes, we confirm a common clone of origin across metastases and diagnostic biopsies, and identified in individual patients, clusters of metastases occupied by dominant clones with diverged autosomal copy number alterations. These autosome-defined clusters are characterized by cluster-specific AR gene architectures, and in two index cases are topologically more congruent than by chance (p-values 3.07 × 10−8 and 6.4 × 10−4). Integration with anatomical sites suggests patterns of spread and points of genomic divergence. Here, we show that copy number boundaries identify treatment-selected clones with putatively distinct lethal trajectories.

Abstract

IntroductionRECONCILE (ClinicalTrials.gov:NCT04340245) will identify molecular and radiomic markers associated with clinical progression and radiological progression events in a cohort of localised, newly diagnosed Gleason 3 + 4 tumours. Molecular markers will be correlated against standard of care MRI-targeted histology and oncological outcomes.MethodsRECONCILE is an ethics approved (20/LO/0366) single centre, prospective, longitudinal, observational cohort study of recently diagnosed (within 12 months), organ-confined Gleason 3 + 4 cancers (MCCL ≤10mm) currently under active surveillance. 60 treatment-naïve participants with a concordant MRI lesion (Likert score 4 or 5) and PSA ≤ 15 ng/ml will be recruited. Blood, urine and targeted prostate tissue cores will be subject to next generation sequencing at baseline and one year in all participants. Semen will be collected from a specified sub-population. Baseline and interval MR images will be extracted from standard of care prostate MRI ahead of radiomic analysis. Data extracted from radiological and biological samples will be used to derive the association of molecular change and radiological progression, the primary outcome of the study. To compensate for spatial intratumoral heterogeneity and inherent sampling bias, a molecular index will be derived for each participant using the molecular profile of tumour tissue at both baseline (MolBL) and one year (MolFU). We will extract a ΔMolBL:MolFU score for each participant. Molecular progression will be defined as a MolBL:MolFU score >95% CI of the combined ΔMolBL scores. Radiological progression is defined as a PRECISE score of 4 or 5. The study is powered to detect an association with a statistical power of 80%.ResultsRecruitment began in July 2020 (n = 62). To date, 37 participants have donated tissue for analysis.ConclusionWe have designed and implemented a prospective, longitudinal study to evaluate the underlying molecular landscape of intermediate risk, MR-visible prostate tumours. Recruitment is ongoing.

146. Hit by the wave: The experiences of adult males living with lymphoedema.

Abstract

Lymphoedema arises when the lymphatic system has been damaged and may occur secondary to cancer treatment. While much of the extant literature focuses on quality of life in females with breast cancer- related lymphoedema, this study explores the impact of living with lymphoedema secondary to cancer treatment in males. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 13 male participants, aged between 50 to 85 years. Data collected were analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis. The super-ordinate theme 'Hit by a wave' encompasses the profound impact of lymphoedema on the participants' quality of life. The males expressed body image concerns and struggled with feelings of frustration, anger, anxiety and depression. Physical changes such as weight increase, disrupted sleep, pain, swollen genitals and urinary difficulties were experienced. Changes in lifestyle were also expressed, such as an increased dependence on carers; work-related and role changes. Nevertheless, many participants endorsed the need to focus on the present moment and expressed a heightened appreciation of authenticity in life. By understanding the unique narratives of males with lymphoedema, health care practitioners together with patients can formulate care plans that truly resonate with the needs, concerns, and experiences of males living with lymphoedema.

Abstract

One-particle energy eigenfunctions are used to obtain quantum averages in many particle systems. These are based on the effective local field due to fixed neighbors in classical phase space, while the averages account for the non-commutativity of the position and momentum operators. Used in Monte Carlo simulations for a one-dimensional Lennard-Jones fluid, the results prove more reliable than a high temperature expansion and a harmonic local field approach, and at intermediate temperatures agree with benchmark numerical results.
