This study investigates the diversity, abundance, and composition spider communities in Rancho Las Playitas, Arizpe and Bacoachi, Sonora, Mexico. Moreover, we present a comprehensive species list for the Sky Island Mountains of Sonora, compiled from recent surveys. Spiders were collected using three methods: visual searching, foliage beating, and pitfall trapping. We report 29 new distributional records for spider species, four of which are new country records for Mexico and 25 for the state of Sonora. Additionally, we describe and image the vulva of Calilena arizonica Chamberlin & Ivie, 1941 for the first time, and provide images of 28 additional species. Our findings expand the known spider diversity in the region and reveal richness and compositional pattern in Rancho Las Playitas that exhibit low similarity to other spider communities from arid environments. Resumen. Estudiamos la diversidad, abundancia y composición de una comunidad de arañas en Rancho Las Playitas, Arizpe y Bacoachi, Sonora México. Además, se compiló una lista de arañas de las Islas Serranas (Archipiélago Madrense) de Sonora con base en colectas recientes. Las arañas se colectaron mediante tres métodos: búsqueda visual, golpeo en la vegetación y trampas de caída. Además, proporcionamos nuevos datos de distribución de 29 especies de arañas, de las cuales cuatro especies se registran por primera vez para México y 25 para el estado de Sonora. The Canary Islands is a Macaronesian volcanic archipelago with a depauperate community of three species of Kalotermitidae, including Kalotermes dispar. A total of 54 Kalotermes colonies were collected from Gran Canaria, Tenerife, La Gomera, La Palma, and El Hierro islands. Soldiers and imagos were morphologically examined and sequenced for four mitochondrial markers. Although morphological differences could not be detected, phylogenetic analysis of both cox1 / tRNA / cox2 and rrnL markers revealed two distinct clades of K. dispar , suggesting cryptic diversity. The diversification within the Canary Kalotermes lineage most likely occurred around 7.5 Mya, while the divergence within the two clades was reconstructed at about 3.6 Mya and 1.9 Mya. Kalotermes approximatus from the southeastern Nearctic constitutes a sister to the Canary Kalotermes , while the Palearctic K. flavicollis , K. italicus , and K. phoenicae form a separate clade. It is hypothesized that a faunal exchange of Kalotermes from the Nearctic to the Canary Islands occurred via transoceanic rafting during the mid-Miocene. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Within vertebrates, reptiles are good island colonisers, often leading to considerable levels of intraspecific diversity among populations inhabiting different islands/archipelagos. This study explores the mitochondrial phylogeographic structure of Tarentola boettgeri , a gecko species endemic to the Macaronesian archipelagos of Selvagens and the Canary Islands. Our research introduces a novel monophyletic group, comprising the populations from the islands of Selvagem Pequena and Ilhéu de Fora. Furthermore, we confirm the previously identified genetic clusters associated with Selvagem Grande, Gran Canaria and El Hierro. We estimate that the origin of T. boettgeri dates to the upper Miocene (ca. 6.4 Mya), and that the separation of T. boettgeri bischoffi on Selvagem Grande, Selvagem Pequena, and Ilhéu de Fora, occurred ca. 0.5 Mya. The absence of genetic differences between Selvagem Pequena and Ilhéu de Fora suggests recent gene flow or founder events, possibly facilitated by land connections during major glaciations. Conversely, the geographic barriers between Selvagem Grande and Selvagem Pequena likely persisted, preventing genetic admixing. The significant genetic distances observed among all populations underscore the necessity of an integrative taxonomic revision for T. boettgeri. In light of our findings, and with particular consideration of the small population sizes of T. boettgeri bischoffi on Selvagem Pequena and Ilhéu de Fora, we propose that the identified monophyletic groups should be managed as Evolutionarily Significant Units (ESUs). Accordingly, our study highlights the importance of recognizing ESUs in island-restricted reptile populations for targeted conservation efforts, especially given their unique intraspecific diversity and the vulnerability of their habitats. The only published records of Colias croceus form cremonaehelice Russell et al., 2003 (the alba ♀ form of cremonae) appear to be from the island of Faial, Azores Archipelago. Many records of f. cremonae are erroneous due to inaccurate illustrations representing this form. It is acknowledged that the multitude of names of forms and aberrations of C. croceus makes for nomenclatural confusion. This article gives a descriptive comparison of C. croceus f. cremonaehelice and C. croceus f. helice (the alba ♀ form of croceus). A specimen of C. croceus f. cremonaehelice from Beirut, Lebanon is illustrated; the only location other than the Azores where this form has been recorded reliably. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Astydamia latifolia is the only species of the genus Astydamia, which forms an early‐diverging lineage of Apiaceae, subfamily Apioideae. This species is subendemic to the Canary Islands and one of the most representative species of the coastal environments of this archipelago. Astydamia displays diplochory, that is, diaspores with two long‐distance dispersal (LDD) syndromes. In particular, A. latifolia has both anemochorous and thalassochorous fruit traits (corky and winged mericarps). Although we expect this species to have a high dispersal capacity, there is no genetic study addressing it. The divergence time of this species from its sister taxon is also unknown. In this study, we aimed (i) to unveil the phylogenetic relationships and divergence times of A. latifolia; (ii) to reconstruct its phylogeographic structure across the Canary Islands; and (iii) to estimate the number of inter‐island colonization events. To these ends, we first sequenced the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region for A. latifolia, reconstructed the phylogenetic relationships of Astydamia and Apiaceae relatives and estimated divergence times. Then, two plastid DNA regions (psaI‐aacD and psbK‐trnS) were sequenced for 158 individuals (from 36 Canarian population and one NW African population) to reconstruct a haplotype network. The recently developed method Phylogeographic Analysis of Island Colonization Events (PAICE) was used to estimate the number of inter‐island colonization events. Results show that A. latifolia is a phylogenetically isolated lineage that diverged from the most closely related genus (Molopospermum) in the Eocene–Miocene. It displays a low plastid DNA diversity (only four haplotypes detected), which is accompanied by a high degree of haplotype sharing between islands and highly linear rarefaction curves of colonization obtained in PAICE. A sweeping proposal to re-orient development from Japan's metropolitan core to its peripheries, Prime Minister Tanaka Kakuei's 1972 "Plan to Remodel the Japanese Archipelago" was published as a bestselling book and helped propel Tanaka to the premiership. This article argues that the Plan was part of an innovative style of politics that defies a standard dichotomy of technocracy and populism in scholarship on Japanese politics. Tanaka's plan and its genesis are informative on three levels: (i) individual biography, represented by the remarkable political figure of Tanaka; (ii) domestic politics and Japan's trajectory of regional development; and (iii) the international environment, as it was deeply informed by global forces in the early 1970s. This follow-up study to the first assessment of Philippine marine mammal strandings (1998 to 2009) assesses the spatiotemporal variation of strandings and the top five most frequently stranded species from a 2005-2022 dataset. It identifies stranding hotspot areas, estimates species stranding rates/status, and examines species composition and other stranding information. The 18-year database contained 1,368 stranding events with an annual average of 76 events. The total annual stranding frequency increased over the initial study period but fluctuated in the last seven years. Of the 30 species of marine mammals known in the Philippines, 27 species (26 cetaceans and one sirenian) were recorded in stranding records, and the top five most frequently stranded were (1) spinner dolphins (Stenella longirostris), (2) dugongs (Dugong dugon), (3) Risso’s dolphins (Grampus griseus), (4) Fraser’s dolphins (Lagenodelphis hosei), and (5) melonheaded whales (Peponocephala electra). Strandings consisted mostly of single animals (95%), and 55% of animals stranded alive. For each of the top five species, the frequency of stranding events increased annually. There was a peak in stranding frequency during the pre-southwest inter-monsoon season (March-April-May) for spinner and Risso’s dolphins as well as melon-headed whales, with no seasonal trend for the Fraser’s dolphins and dugongs. We identified stranding hotspots within 15 × 15 km grids along the coastline of the major island groups: Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. Thirty-five percent (497 of 1,422 grids) of the Philippine coastline had stranding records, with the majority in Luzon (n = 238), followed by Mindanao (n = 130) and Visayas (n = 128). Thirty-five stranding hotspots were identified: 24 in Luzon, 10 in Mindanao, and one in Visayas. Species stranding status categories were generated from log transformed stranding rates per species into standardized classification by quartiles. The stranding status of the top five most frequently stranded species was “very frequent” for spinner dolphins, and “frequent” for Fraser’s and Risso’s dolphins, dugongs, and melon-headed whales. The spatiotemporal variation of stranded marine mammals reflects the dynamic nature of the Philippine archipelago driven by monsoons and inter-monsoons and is exacerbated by fishing pressure and illegal activities. This study showed the importance of robust long-term marine mammal stranding databases for monitoring strandings and generating relevant information essential for their conservation. Understanding spatial heterogeneity in reproductive success among at-risk populations facing localised threats is key for conservation. Sea turtle populations often concentrate at one nesting site, diverting conservation efforts from adjacent smaller rookeries. Poilão Island, Bijagós Archipelago, Guinea-Bissau, is a notable rookery for green turtles Chelonia mydas within the João Vieira-Poilão Marine National Park, surrounded by three islands (Cavalos, Meio and João Vieira), with lower nesting activity. Poilão's nesting suitability may decrease due to turtle population growth and sea level rise, exacerbating already high nest density. As the potential usage of secondary sites may arise, we assessed green turtle clutch survival and related threats in Poilão and its neighbouring islands. High nest density on Poilão leads to high clutch destruction by later turtles, resulting in surplus eggs on the beach surface and consequently low clutch predation (4.0%, n = 69, 2000). Here, the overall mean hatching success estimated was 67.9 ± 36.7% (n = 631, 2015–2022), contrasting with a significantly lower value on Meio in 2019 (11.9 ± 23.6%, n = 21), where clutch predation was high (83.7%, n = 98). Moderate to high clutch predation was also observed on Cavalos (36.0%, n = 64) and João Vieira (76.0%, n = 175). Cavalos and Meio likely face higher clutch flooding compared to Poilão. These findings, alongside observations of turtle exchanges between islands, may suggest a source-sink dynamic, where low reproductive output sink habitats (neighbouring islands) are utilized by migrants from Poilão (source), which currently offers the best conditions for clutch survival. Aims: Predictable and consistent differences between island and mainland organisms arising from biased colonization/establishment are known as insular assembly rules. Baker's rule is a long‐standing assembly rule predicting that the incidence of dioecy among early island colonizers should be lower than that of the mainland source pool. While Baker's rule is an established pattern of island floras, whether it results from trait correlation or factors other than insularity remains poorly understood. Here, I investigated the relative roles of insularity, climate, and dioecy‐correlated traits in regulating the incidence of dioecy across islands. Location: Southwest Pacific. Methods: I amassed a data set of 485 plant species distributed across eight archipelagos surrounding New Zealand. Trait correlation was estimated using an association rule algorithm. I then used a null model and undirected network models to test for Baker's rule and to disentangle the relative roles of insularity, climate, and dioecy‐correlated traits in filtering dioecy among undifferentiated island colonizers. Results: Some archipelagos conformed to Baker's rule, but the incidence of dioecy was not directly linked to insularity. Instead, it was directly regulated by dioecy‐related traits, that is, fleshy‐fruitedness and woody habit, which in turn were primarily driven by climate. Conclusions: Island assembly rules can result from trait correlation. While results were partially consistent with predictions by Baker's rules, this resulted from dioecy‐related traits being largely excluded from island colonization/establishment because of climatic factors, not insularity. The author's watercolor maps capturing the inherently spatial, heterogeneous experiences of ecological islands and edges, and musical map evoking a multifaceted journey through an 'archipelago' of island ecosystems, aim to convey the increasing fragility and 'preciousness' of these slivers of the natural world. But simultaneously, the maps unintentionally begin to muddle this simplistic conception of ecological isolation and stability. The paintings' fractured compositions and external frames appear to freeze and distance islands in space and time, but as the fragments multiply they also immerse the viewer in the geography and suggest ecological dynamism. The musical map has a similarly multifaceted structure, but it is mainly qualities of fluidity and cohesion, along with sound's fundamentally non-descriptive, temporal nature, that objectify the island in some ways and in others produce an immersive, energizing effect. In future cartographic work, the author expects to more consciously engage rather than to resolve this tension between isolation and integration. But as a viewer/listener impression that is ultimately itself the 'object' of the maps, the islands' imagined state of timelessness and preciousness is in fact a manifestation of their inseparability from humanity and the wider world – and therefore an image with reality and value of its own. In this study, we revisit the shear‐wave velocity structure of the lithosphere and asthenosphere surrounding the Hawaiian hotspot and Hawaiian swell using Rayleigh wave data spanning periods of 20–125 s from the PLUME project. A primary goal of this investigation is to probe the origin of the Hawaiian swell and the mechanism that elevates the topography, providing insights into mantle dynamics beneath hotspot swells. In the shear velocity model, the 30–70 km depth range is largely featureless with weak and local anomalies, indicating that the elevation of the Hawaiian swell cannot be attributed to upper lithospheric reheating or replacement. In contrast, at 80–150 km depth, a pronounced region of anomalously low velocities is well‐resolved, with the lowest velocities found beneath the Hawaii‐Maui‐Molokai part of the island chain. Minimum shear velocities are approximately 4.0 km/s at 100–120 km depth, which is an ∼8%‐10% velocity decrease relative to the surrounding velocities away from the swell. This pattern suggests that hot, buoyant mantle from deeper plume sources laterally spread out near the top of the normal oceanic asthenosphere. We find that the low‐velocity pattern in the asthenosphere exhibits a strong correlation with the overall shape of the Hawaiian swell topography. Assuming that density anomalies are proportional to shear velocity anomalies, we demonstrate that the anomalous elevation of the swell can be explained by the uplift of a 30‐km‐thick elastic plate loaded from below by this buoyant, low‐seismic‐velocity layer in the asthenosphere. Plain Language Summary: We collected and analyzed teleseismic surface wave data recorded by the PLUME ocean‐bottom‐seismometer array and adjacent land stations to obtain a three‐dimensional shear‐wave velocity model of the upper mantle around Hawaii. Our goal is to generate a finer velocity model that can accurately reveal the seismic velocity features within the Hawaiian lithosphere and asthenosphere. The issue addressed in this study is the origin of the Hawaiian swell, the region of elevated seafloor surrounding the island hotspot chain. Our shear‐wave velocity structure, at depths of 30–70 km, displays only local features without strong velocity anomalies. In the 80–150 km depth range, there are widespread, strong low‐velocity anomalies that correlate well with the shape of the swell. We infer that these low‐velocity anomalies are hot, buoyant materials from deeper mantle plumes that laterally spread out at the top of the asthenosphere. We calculated the fit between the overall shape of the observed swell and the prediction of deflection assuming density anomalies are proportional to the shear velocity anomalies. The predicted elevation agrees well, implying that the swell originates in the upper asthenosphere and lower lithosphere deeper than 80 km. The application of Social Network Analysis to the study of archaeological networks has become increasingly common around the world, with a proven track record of processing large, complex, spatial and temporal archaeological datasets. This study builds upon previous network‐based analyses of interaction between communities of the Lapita Cultural Complex, with a specific focus on the Early Period (c.3300/3200–3100 calBP) in the Bismarck Archipelago, Papua New Guinea. Employing motif inventories from 13 Early Lapita Period assemblages, motif similarity and Centrality Analysis are undertaken, with the results compared to data from portable material culture, particularly obsidian and pottery, to further define the networks of interaction that linked communities during this period. We conclude that motif similarities and Centrality Analysis scores show good agreement with patterns of interactions established from the analysis of other types of portable material culture, which together support the existence of northern west to east and southern obsidian distribution networks, comprised of communities that employed unique types of interaction tailored towards their own cultural and societal circumstances and needs. Finally, we further conclude that these two networks may have arisen during the initial formation of the Lapita Cultural Complex, as populations established new social connections with other settler communities and incumbent populations across the region to survive in a new and foreign environment. Shellfish remains are ubiquitous to coastal archaeological sites in the Marquesas but have seldom been the focus of dedicated investigations into their contribution to past diet and daily life. On the island of Ua Huka, in the northern group of the archipelago, people have consumed a variety of shellfish since their arrival on the island around the early 12th century AD. By analysing assemblages from five coastal sites spanning from the early settlement until the 18th century and using an archaeomalacological approach (precise taxonomic identification, coupled quantification methods, observation of taphonomic processes, biometry), we attempt to recount the exploitation processes of this resource, from the initial gathering stage to the final discarding of the shell. We further explore inter‐site and temporal variability in prey choice. Coupled with ethnographic accounts from European observers and insightful testimonies from current inhabitants of the island regarding present‐day practices, we highlight the persistence of choices regarding species selection, breakage patterns and cooking processes on an island that has seen major subsistence changes since European contact. Bora Bora is a volcanic island in the tropical central South Pacifi c Ocean with a barrier reef and large well developed back-reef lagoons. It forms part of the system of shallow water environments in the archipelagos of French Polynesia that provide stepping stones for the interconnectivity of shallow marine faunas between the tropical Western and Eastern Pacifi c biogeographic regions. The fauna has many similarities to foraminiferal faunas in the south western Indo-Pacifi c but has been demonstrated to be unique. This study provides illustrations and discussions of most of the 184 species of benthic foraminifera identifi ed from sediments in the back-reef lagoon environments at Bora Bora, that span from the shallow immediate back-reef sand banks, to the deep lagoons and to the coastal fringing reefs and embayments around the volcanic island. The illustrated specimens and taxonomic discussions are aimed at providing an identifi cation guide to shallow water tropical benthic foraminifera from the central South Pacifi c region. Six new species have been established, including Textularia boraboraensis, Miliolinella mccullochae, Quinqueloculina guilcheri, Triloculina karimimossadeghae, Coscinospira georgforsteri, and Elphidium venecpeyreae. The Falkland Islands constitute a remote archipelago in the South Atlantic Ocean that is about 450 km east of continental South America. The invertebrate fauna of the Falkland Islands is poorly known, and thus far no ants have been reported. We conducted surveys for ants on East Falkland Island during the austral summer 2019. No ants were found during our surveys, such that East Falkland Island is one of few oceanic islands that lack native and non-native ants. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Similar to other insular birds around the world, the Galapagos rail (Laterallus spilonota Gould, 1841) exhibits reduced flight capacity following its colonization of the archipelago ~1.2 mya. Despite their short evolutionary history, rails have colonized seven different islands spanning the entire width of the archipelago. Galapagos rails were once common on islands with sufficiently high altitudes to support shrubs in humid habitats. After humans introduced goats, this habitat was severely reduced due to overgrazing. Habitat loss devastated some rail populations, with less than 50 individuals surviving, rendering the genetic diversity of Galapagos rail a pressing conservation concern. Additionally, one enigma is the reappearance of rails on the island of Pinta after they were considered extirpated. Our approach was to investigate the evolutionary history and geographic distribution of Galapagos rails as well as examine the genome-wide effects of historical population bottlenecks using 39 whole genomes across different island populations. We recovered an early divergence of rail ancestors leading to the isolated populations on Pinta and a second clade comprising the rest of the islands, historically forming a single landmass. Subsequently, the separation of the landmass ~900 kya may have led to the isolation of the Isabela population with more panmictic populations found on Santa Cruz and Santiago islands. We found that rails genomes contain long runs of homozygosity (>2 Mb) that could be related to the introduction of goats. Finally, our findings show that the modern eradication of goats was critical to avoiding episodes of inbreeding in most populations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A correlation model for the diffuse fraction was recently developed on the basis of a data set obtained in the western part of the Taiwanese mainland. However, it is widely agreed that no existing diffuse fraction correlation model is applicable to all geographical regions and climatic conditions, which is a viewpoint stated from a macro perspective. This study re-justifies this viewpoint through the consideration of a rather small geographical region: Taiwan. The topographic profile of the Taiwanese mainland primarily comprises the high-rise Central Mountain Ranges running from north–northeast to south–southwest, which separate the mainland into eastern and western parts. Furthermore, there are a number of small, remote islands around the Taiwanese mainland. The humidity over the sky dome of these small islands, carried from the moist sea (or ocean) air, is usually greater than that of the Taiwanese mainland. This results in different diffuse fraction patterns between these two geographical regions due to the climatic factor of atmospheric constituents. Two diffuse fraction correlation models for Taiwan were developed using in situ data sets for the eastern part of the Taiwanese mainland and an island in the Penghu archipelago, respectively. In particular, one case considered the topographic effect on modeling the diffuse fraction in Taiwan, while the other considered the geographical effect. Statistical assessments indicate that each correlation model developed in the present study performed better than the previous one developed using the in situ data set for the western part of the Taiwanese mainland, with both applied to the specific site where the data set was used for the model's development. Differences in migratory behavior have been suggested to drive speciation, but the genetics underlying this process remain unknown. Identification and study of migratory divides can help us understand how differential migration can lead to reproductive isolation. Here, we genotyped Willow Warblers Phylloscopus trochilus, from the Åland islands, located in between the ranges of the differentially migrating subspecies P. t. trochilus and P. t. acredula. We found that Willow Warblers on the Åland islands were genetically intermediate to allopatric populations of both parental subspecies, providing evidence that the islands constitute a previously unknown hybrid swarm, likely to be a migratory divide. The earliest archaeological sites anchor discussions of the timing, speed, and direction of colonization of continents, single archipelagos, and individual islands, and new discoveries of the oldest sites often cause reevaluations of settlement models and culture-histories at various scales. Consequently, the oldest sites have continued to garner great interest amongst archaeologists worldwide. Here we report a suite of 21 AMS radiocarbon age determinations from a deeply stratified sandy mound habitation situated at an environmentally diverse "hot-spot" along the south-central leeward shore of Moloka'i, Hawaiian Islands. Despite its ecological position in a dry leeward region – what some have called "high risk zones" – the ease of access and concentration of vital resources, including potable water, nutrient-rich gardening soils, and marine and freshwater biota was a magnet for early colonists. The faunal content, site stratigraphy, and geomorphological context of the Kawela Mound is described documenting rapid change in the dynamic landscape over several centuries. A Bayesian analysis of the Kawela Mound radiocarbon dates places earliest habitation at a modeled age of AD 1121–1262 (median AD 1210) making it one of the earliest habitations in the Hawaiian Islands. Micranthes nelsoniana possesses multiple different variants and numerous chromosomes. Based on the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and chloroplast (cp)DNA sequences, the phylogeography of M. nelsoniana and its relatives in Northeast Asia was investigated, with extensive sampling around the Kuril Islands. The Arctic–Asian continent and a clade of marginal islands were the two main groupings that comprised the ITS phylogenetic tree. The island clade was separated into five well-supported clades: Kamchatka and Hokkaido highlands, Kuril–Aleutian Islands, southern Kuril Islands, Japanese archipelago, and Primorye region. Micranthes fusca was found in Japan and in the southern Kuril Islands. It is a separate species that created several types of hybrids between M. nelsoniana in the centre of the Kuril Islands based on a comparison of the ITS and cpDNA networks. Micranthes nelsoniana and M. ohwii appear to have hybridized in the northern Kuril Islands. Cytological investigation on the local species of M. nelsoniana showed that the chromosomal numbers are: 2 n  = 24, 26, 28, 30, 50, and 80. Among them, two usual numbers to this area, 2 n  = 24 and 50, appear to encourage interspecific gene exchange. The genomes of Hokkaido plants with high chromosome counts were cloned, revealing that they contained genes of both continental and marginal origins. The conservation and spatial management of marine species with limited adult mobility, such as queen conch, is dictated by larval connectivity. Effectively placed reserves provide larval spillover to harvested areas while replenishing their own population. In past studies proximate to the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park (ECLSP), surveys and probabilistic larval transport modeling demonstrated a spillover effect from the ECLSP to surrounding fished areas, while suggesting that incoming larval sources are lacking. Previous work was expanded in both upstream and downstream directions, enabling the statistical examination of (1) how queen conch abundance was linked to predicted larval transport from breeding populations in the ECLSP and (2) how age and size changed throughout the island chain as divided by management and connectivity. Biophysical modeling predictions of larval transport from breeding within the ECLSP were significantly associated with the relative abundance of juvenile conch observed across a nearly 200‐km span. Further, the abundance and shell lip thickness (relative age) of adults and the size of juveniles were significantly larger in ECLSP than unprotected areas. This empirical support for an effective, well‐enforced marine reserve and for using biophysical larval transport modeling as a spatial planning tool should be strongly considered in conch conservation and management. There was much contact between the Dutch Republic and Muslim world in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The Dutch East India Company (VOC) (1602-1799) undertook extensive commercial activity in the Indian Ocean and Indonesian archipelago, where many Muslims lived. The VOC established trading posts in Bengal, across the Indian sub-continent, in Persia, the Yemen, and at its headquarters in the East Indies at Batavia. Whilst people in these areas practised several religions including Buddhism, Hinduism, and Christianity, most of these areas had significant Muslim populations, often with Muslim rulers. I am undertaking a project to analyse who spoke and wrote Dutch to whom and when in the Muslim world in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Given the scale of the Muslim world, it will be useful to divide it into two parts: one that focuses on the Indonesian archipelago and another on other countries with Muslim populations. This article examines what the second part of this project might look like, mapping out the form and content of a project on contact between Dutch and languages spoken in the Muslim world in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Evolutionary theory suggests the hypothesis that among genetically isolated populations, phenotypic variation should be smaller in populations with smaller ratios of nonsynonymous to synonymous substitutions (dN/dS) because smaller dN/dS ratios occur under greater purification selections. Two distinct lineages (JPN1 and JPN2) of panarctic Daphnia cf. pulex sensu Hebert (1995), invaded independently into Japan from North America, provide an excellent opportunity to test this hypothesis because the earlier invader JPN1 has a lower dN/dS ratio than JPN2. Therefore, we examined phenotypic variations in fitness‐related traits, including digestive, life‐history, and morphological traits, among several genotypes within these two lineages. We found that phenotypic variations were smaller within the JPN1 lineage than within the JPN2 lineage. Furthermore, within‐lineage variation of the phenotypic plasticity to changing food levels was smaller in the JPN1 lineage than in the JPN2 lineage. These results support the hypothesis that the JPN1 lineage has been more efficiently subjected to negative selection. However, the magnitude of the phenotypic plasticity of these traits was, on average, at the same level between the JPN1 and JPN2 lineages and its direction differed among genotypes of these lineages, suggesting that the JPN2 genotypes might have exploited niches that were different from those of the JPN1 genotypes. The Franz Josef Land population of the Atlantic walrus (Odobenus rosmarus rosmarus) remains one of the least studied. Here, 26 walruses were tagged with satellite‐linked radio transmitters in Franz Josef Land archipelago and Victoria Island in summer‐autumn 2020 and 2021 to assess movements patterns and area utilization. In addition, 65 grab samples were taken to evaluate macrobenthic foraging resources. The mean duration of data records was 53 ± 27 days. The walruses traveled on average 29 ± 13.5 km/day with a mean speed of 1.2 ± 0.6 km/hr. The travel speed and distance were statistically different for male, female, and immature walruses. The individuals tagged on Victoria Island remained in the vicinity of the island, while walruses tagged within the Franz Josef Land archipelago moved between the islands, utilizing the entire area for foraging trips. One walrus migrated from Franz Josef Land to Novaya Zemlya in late November, providing evidence of connectivity with the Kara‐Barents Sea population. The area was characterized by high average biomass of macrobenthos. Bivalve mollusks, Hiatella arctica, were dominating macrobenthic biomass, likely being the main foraging resource for the walruses. Further observations are needed to better understand winter behaviors of Franz Josef Land walruses and possible impacts of climate change on movement patterns. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Homestead windbreaks are used on the Ryukyu Islands to protect houses from the tidal water blowing from the sea, strong typhoons in the summer, and monsoonal winds in the winter. The homestead windbreak landscape is believed to have been established approximately 300 years ago in the Ryukyu Kingdom. Garcinia subelliptica (Fukugi in Japanese) was dominant in this windbreak landscape. These windbreaks vanished on several islands soon after World War II. Many trees were burned during the war and removed to extend village roads in rural and recent resort development projects. This study surveyed the present spatial distribution of the remaining homestead windbreaks and conducted a tree inventory survey. We recorded the location and characteristics of trees damaged by the powerful typhoon and tentatively explored the causes of tree and house damage through a case study of Yonaguni Island, where one of the world's biggest typhoons occurred. Homestead windbreaks facing the wind direction, tree characters of cavities, unsound branching, and combined tree trunks were the significant factors contributing to tree damage. The remnant homestead windbreak belts in Yonaguni Island were fragmented and not continuous and may not offer consistent wind protection since there are open gaps between the sections. It suggests windbreaks should be replanted in the direction of the wind, and regular checks of tree health and tree structure are needed to reduce typhoon damage. This paper considers the intervention that Édouard Glissant makes in Hannah Arendt's discourse on political belonging, particularly as this takes shape in her analysis of citizenship. To this end, I consider how Glissant's analysis of the memory of the abyssal beginning of the Middle Passage complicates the promise of belonging that Arendt suggests citizenship makes for those who were once cast out. In view of this, I argue that Glissant provides a basis to reformulate citizenship and political belonging, not in terms of the bounded structure of the nation-state, but in terms of the relational structure of the archipelago. Two moderate earthquakes struck the South-Central part of Java Island (in Indonesia's archipelago) with Mw 5.7 and Mw 5.9 on June 06 and June 30, 2023, respectively. Both earthquakes were followed by ~100 aftershocks with widespread and strong impacts along Java Island where some regions suffered several damages. In this study, both earthquake mechanisms were derived from the Bayesian moment tensor inversion and configure a unique faulting with a thrusting mechanism that is striking perpendicularly with the trench in the N–S direction. The results of the hypocenter relocation, using an updated 1-D velocity model, show that the aftershocks of the Mw 5.9 occurred deeper than the interface zone, while the aftershocks of the Mw 5.7 were located shallower above the slab. Both earthquakes can robustly confirm possible evidence of different faulting vertically clustered above the intraslab zone. The Mw 5.9 can be assumed as the backstop system dipping to the east–west direction, while Mw 5.7 is the backthrust system with south-dipping. Furthermore, a broad impact of both earthquakes on the resilience of MMI VI intensity with PGA value > 100 gal can be used to update the mitigation plan for the intraslab earthquake in the near future. Phragmites australis is a common helophyte, covering much of the sheltered and shallow soft bottoms along the coasts of the Baltic Sea. Despite the expansion of P. australis over the past decades, there is little information on aquatic macroinvertebrates within P. australis beds. In this study, we examined the effect of large-scale (wave exposure, nutrients) and small-scale (distance from the seaward edge, live and dead stalk density, epiphyte and rhizome biomass) drivers on the density, taxa richness, diversity, and community structure of epifauna and infauna in monospecific P. australis beds around the Åland Islands and the Archipelago Sea. We found that higher wave exposure and nutrient levels generally supported higher epi- and infauna abundance and taxa richness. The effects on Shannon–Wiener diversity were less evident apart from an increase of the infauna diversity in the Archipelago Sea with increasing nutrient levels. On a local scale, the distance from the seaward edge, live and dead stalk density, and epiphyte biomass had varying effects on both epi- and infauna communities in the different regions. Rhizome biomass had no effect on either the epi- or infauna abundance, taxa richness, or diversity. Furthermore, according to existing studies, other habitats, e.g., Zostera marina meadows, Fucus vesiculosus belts, and vegetated soft-bottomed shallow bays, are generally characterized by more abundant fauna, except for the infauna, which had a higher density in P. australis beds than in vegetated soft-bottomed shallow bays. Biological invasions are among the threats to global biodiversity and social sustainability, especially on islands. Identifying the threshold of area at which non-native species begin to increase abruptly is crucial for early prevention strategies. The small-island effect (SIE) was proposed to quantify the nonlinear relationship between native species richness and area but has not yet been applied to non-native species and thus to predict the key breakpoints at which established non-native species start to increase rapidly. Based on an extensive global dataset, including 769 species of non-native birds, mammals, amphibians and reptiles established on 4277 islands across 54 archipelagos, we detected a high prevalence of SIEs across 66.7% of archipelagos. Approximately 50% of islands have reached the threshold area and thus may be undergoing a rapid increase in biological invasions. SIEs were more likely to occur in those archipelagos with more non-native species introduction events, more established historical non-native species, lower habitat diversity and larger archipelago area range. Our findings may have important implications not only for targeted surveillance of biological invasions on global islands but also for predicting the responses of both non-native and native species to ongoing habitat fragmentation under sustained land-use modification and climate change. The development of efficient and durable non‐precious hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysts for scaling up alkaline water/seawater electrolysis is highly desirable but challenging. Amorphous‐crystalline (A‐C) heterostructures have garnered attention due to their unusual atomic arrangements at hetero‐interfaces, highly exposed active sites, and excellent stability. Here, a heterogeneous synthesis strategy for constructing A‐C non‐homogeneous interfacial centers of electrocatalysts on nanocages is presented. Isolated PdCo clusters on nanoscale islands in conjunction with Co3S4 A‐C, functioning as a bifunctional site "island‐sea" synergy, enable the dynamic confinement design of metal active atoms, resulting in excellent HER catalytic activity and durability. The hierarchical structure of hollow porous nanocages and nanoclusters, along with their large surface area and multi‐dimensional A‐C boundaries and defects, provides the catalyst with abundant active centers. Theoretical calculations demonstrate that the combination of PdCo and Co3S4 regulates the redistribution of interface electrons effectively, promoting the sluggish water‐dissociation kinetics at the cluster Co sites. Additionally, PdCo‐Co3S4 heterostructure nanocages exhibit outstanding HER activity in alkaline seawater and long‐term stability for 100 h, which can be powered by commercial silicon solar cells. Islands and small island groups are among the areas most affected by global climate change and face major adaptation challenges. Their role as hotspots of climate change impacts is widely recognized in the scientific literature, and it is not uncommon for small islands to act as poster children for particular climate-related vulnerability. Nonetheless, many island communities have a long tradition of living with oceanic influences, and the question is whether such habitats, where terrestrial and marine ecosystems overlap, have characteristics that contribute to greater self-regulation and resilience. The question is further whether and how the future or possible futures of such an exposed region and society could unfold, considering the negative impact of climate change and the resulting burden of natural disasters. The Halligen in the southern North Sea are an exceptional example of such a situation, and they are to be examined in this study particularly due to their extremely uncertain future. Questions regarding the future arise even more urgently due to the rapidly advancing sea-level rise in the course of climate change. They were already evident in a local field research in 2014 and for current reasons the collected interview material shall be analyzed under this prospective point of view. So what, under these harsh circumstances, might the futures of the Halligen look like? What does it mean for the future of a habitat and a society when the constant risk of storm surges is multiplied by the global risk of climate change and rising sea level? By examining this question from an interdisciplinary perspective in the present study, multiple answers can be provided. The futures differ significantly depending on the perspective from which one looks into the future. However, it is precisely this multidimensionality and heterogeneity that can pose an advantage when considering the unpredictability of future developments. Choosing this very specific region for the study also adds to the benefit – because: If the conditions change, if the strength of the environmental influences change in regions where two ecosystems overlap and which are particularly vulnerable due to their islandness, dealing with and adapting to the consequences of global warming becomes a glimpse into the future of all of us. Earthquakes (mainshocks) trigger sequences of aftershocks, the frequency of which diminishes following a power-law decay, while the spatial domain of these aftershocks extends logarithmically over time. The delineation of the aftershock zone can be modulated by variables beyond the magnitude of the mainshock, encompassing the location of the fault (whether the fault is at a plate boundary), the depth at which the event occurs, and the prevailing local stress conditions. Here, we evaluate the expansion rate of aftershock zones by analyzing earthquakes of magnitude-7 class in the vicinity of the Japanese archipelago. Prior studies have offered approximate assessments of expansion rates; however, our approach involves the utilization of a straightforward algorithm for the automated estimation of this metric, facilitating the compilation of a catalog. Across the dataset, no pronounced correlations were discerned between the expansion rate and other examined parameters. Yet, an inverse relationship is identified between the expansion rate and the b value of aftershocks for mainshocks occurring at plate boundaries. This observation suggests that the expansion rate of aftershock zones predominantly mirrors the stress field following the mainshock. Such a pattern is not detected in mainshocks occurring within the plate's interior. While the expansion rate of aftershock zones is likely influenced by various factors, aftershock zones may expand more rapidly with higher differential stress in areas surrounding hypocenters of major interplate earthquakes of magnitude 8 or 9. Anthropogenic activities have reduced ecotones between the ocean and land, which is likely to threaten the population of brackish‐water brachyuran crabs. To assess the current status of these crabs, we examine the population genetic structures of three semi‐terrestrial brachyuran crabs widely distributed along the coast of the Japan and to clarify factors determining their genetic structures. We collected 184 Orisarma dehaani, 252 Chiromantes haematocheir, and 151 Helice tridens crabs from 36 localities of the Japanese archipelago. Genome‐wide SNP data from these crabs were analyzed using MIG‐seq. Bayesian clustering of STRUCTURE and DAPC analysis were used to identify genetically disturbed populations and to visualize genetic differentiation between local populations. Genetic population structure showed clear differentiation between populations on the Pacific coast of the Tohoku region and on other Japanese coasts in O. dehaani, but not in C. haematocheir or H. tridens. The inbreeding coefficient of O. dehaani was significantly higher on the Pacific coast of the Tohoku region compared to other Japanese coasts. C. haematocheir and H. tridens had homogeneous genetic structures along the Japanese coast, but showed genetic differentiation of a local population at their range limits. Thus, O. dehaani showed little gene flow and clear genetic differentiation between populations in the Tohoku Pacific region and those on other Japanese coasts due to ocean currents. Although such a regional differentiation was not found in C. haematocheir and H. tridens, one population of C. haematocheir was genetically isolated at the edge of its distribution range and likely vulnerable to environmental changes. Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list, the sub-Antarctic Crozet archipelago is located in a region facing significant environmental changes impacting a poorly known marine biodiversity. Underwater imagery constitutes a valuable non-invasive approach for gathering ecological data and improving our knowledge of ecosystems' vulnerability. We here compiled two datasets, encompassing 17 video-imagery surveys of Crozet nearshore environments conducted in 2021 and 2022 at two sites of Ile de la Possession: Baie du Marin and Crique du Sphinx. Faunal abundance and algal cover data related to each survey are also provided. A total of 755 images were analysed, comprising 52 faunal and 14 algal taxa identified in 2021, as well as 45 faunal and 14 algal taxa identified in 2022. Video-transects were performed in shallow waters by scuba divers using a GoPro®HERO7 multiple camera set-up, and in deeper waters using a remotely operated vehicle. These data provide a first baseline for biodiversity and ecosystem studies, and for monitoring the long-term dynamics of Crozet benthic habitats facing natural and anthropogenic disturbances. The levels of mercury (Hg) were examined in the leg muscle of the crab Grapsus grapsus from five sites on four islands within the Galápagos archipelago. Mercury values obtained using a Milestone DMA 80 evo direct mercury analyzer varied both within and among sites. Total mercury concentrations (mg kg−1 dry weight) ranged from the lowest at a protected location at Isabela Island (0.06 ± 0.02) to the highest at the San Cristóbal urban location (2.04 ± 0.069). Crabs from South Plaza Island also had surprisingly high levels of mercury with a mean of 1.2 ± 0.6. Values from urban sites at Isabela Island and Academy Bay, Santa Cruz, had intermediate values. When converted to wet weight, crabs from both San Cristóbal and South Plaza were within or above the levels (0.3–0.5 mg kg−1 wet weight set by various government agencies) considered potentially harmful to human health if ingested. A lesser number of both oysters and barnacles were also analyzed for mercury at South Plaza and Academy Bay, and while the values were lower compared to the crabs, they followed the same pattern of elevated levels at South Plaza compared to Academy Bay. The arachnid fauna of the Maltese Islands has not yet been adequately investigated. In the present work, from a total of 117 species sampled, 36 taxa represent newly recorded spider species (Araneae) for Malta, with an additional new record of a harvestman (Opiliones). These new records include three new spider families and one new harvestman family for the Maltese archipelago: Anyphaenidae Bertkau, 1878, Mimetidae Simon, 1881, Oxyopidae Thorell, 1869 and Sclerosomatidae Simon, 1879; as well as two species which are recorded from Europe for the first time: Acartauchenius insigniceps (Simon, 1894) and Zelotes poecilochroaeformis Denis, 1937. In Italy, the selenopid spider Selenops radiatus Latreille, 1819, was hitherto only known from the Aeolian Archipelago (northeastern Sicily), with a record from the island of Alicudi and plausible sightings from the island of Filicudi. In this paper, we present twentysix new records from Sicily sensu stricto and its satellite islands, consisting of observations gathered from online naturalist networks and one adult specimen collected from the area where most observations were made. Nearly all records were made in buildings or similar artificial habitats, supporting the hypothesis that occurrences of S. radiatus are mainly limited to synanthropic environments in Sicily. The article discusses the creation of Les Rencontres d'Art et d'Histoire (RAH), a biennial event in Guadeloupe that brings together artists and researchers to create artworks related to the Amerindian past. The event aimed to sensitize the population to the presence of this heritage and encourage a positive appropriation of the archaeological remains. The article explores the impact of the event on the decolonial movement and the potential for decolonization in art and heritage. While the event contributed to a shift in the discourse around the Amerindian past, it also raised questions about the reinforcement of Western-based values and the limitations of the event in terms of decolonial approaches. The Kangean islands are a biologically poorly known archipelago situated in the Java Sea, Indonesia, 120 km directly north of Bali and 124 km off East Java. These islands host an avifauna comprising at least 13 endemic subspecies, two of which have by some sources recently been considered species. We combine historical published literature with our own surveys of the archipelago in 2007-2008, 2010 and 2023 to produce an updated list of the islands' birds (n=140 species) and their distribution across the islands. We evaluate in more detail the conservation status of all endemic taxa, as well as several others we consider to be of concern. Despite its current listing as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, the endemic Kangean Tit-babbler Mixornis prillwitzi is common in highly degraded habitats, including scrub, and is probably one of the islands' least threatened birds. However, because of trapping, the archipelago's endemic taxon of Red-breasted Parakeet Psittacula alexandri kangeanensis, and its populations of Green Junglefowl Gallus varius and Common Hill Myna Gracula religiosa are likely at risk of extirpation. The endemic taxon of White-rumped Shama Copsychus malabaricus nigricauda, sometimes afforded species rank as 'Kangean Shama', may already be (at least functionally) extinct in the main archipelago, with no record since 2007-2008. We recommend longer and more detailed surveys of the islands' birds, and that an effective protected area is established on the main Kangean island, which hosts the largest area of remaining forest in the archipelago and most of its endemic taxa. The article describes the experiences of a person who participated in a volunteer service at a turtle breeding station on the Galápagos Islands. The person had a long-standing interest in reptiles and wanted to contribute to the reintroduction of endangered turtle species. They found the project through the website volunteerworld.com and successfully applied for the program "Assistant in a Giant Tortoise Breeding Center" run by the organization IOI. The journey to the main island of Santa Cruz was made via Amsterdam and Guayaquil, and the person spent two weeks at the turtle breeding station, where they discovered many Galápagos giant tortoises. The island of Santa Cruz is the second largest island in the archipelago and is home to the city of Puerto Ayora and the Charles Darwin Research Station. The Galápagos Islands are known for their unique wildlife, especially the turtles, whose species diversity was threatened by extinction. The article describes the importance of giant tortoises on the Galapagos Islands and the efforts to protect endangered species. The Charles Darwin Research Station breeds various species of turtles, including the species C. porteri and C. donfaustoi found on Santa Cruz, as well as the already extinct species C. abingdonii from the island of Pinta. The station is also dedicated to other animal protection projects. In the highlands of Santa Cruz, there is a reserve where wild giant tortoises can be observed. There are also private ranches like "El Chato" that can be visited to see the animals in their natural habitat. The article describes the visit to the ranches "El Chato" and "Terramar" on the island of Isabela in the Galapagos Archipelago. Visitors can see various species of turtles at the ranches, including larger specimens at "Terramar". The ranches are privately owned but border the national park, allowing the animals to freely roam between the ranch and the national park. The island of Isabela is the largest island in the archipelago and is home to five main volcanoes. Each volcano has its own species of tortoise. There are various ways to travel between the islands, either by plane or ferry. During the project period, volunteers can work at the "Centro de Crianza Tortugas Gigantes Arnaldo Tupiza Chamaidan", where two species of turtles are kept and bred. The work of the volunteers is closely monitored and documented. The article focuses on the tasks of the volunteers at a turtle station on the Galapagos Islands. These tasks include feeding and providing water for the animals, monitoring the enclosures, searching for and counting turtle nests, as well as transferring and incubating the eggs. The volunteers also have the opportunity to experience the native turtle species in the wild, for example, during a hike to the "Wall of Tears". Simple Summary: This study investigates the species–area relationship of amphibians on the Zhoushan Archipelago using eDNA metabarcoding. By analyzing amphibian species diversity on the Zhoushan Archipelago, the eDNA metabarcoding detected eight amphibian species on the islands and nine species in the mainland areas. Findings reveal that the amphibian species diversity is positively related to the island area. In comparison with the traditional line transect method, eDNA metabarcoding detected more amphibian species. eDNA showcases enormous potential in detecting amphibian species. The species–area relationship is important for understanding species diversity patterns at spatial scales, but few studies have examined the relationship using environmental DNA (eDNA) techniques. We investigated amphibian diversity on 21 islands of the Zhoushan Archipelago and nearby mainland areas in China using the combination of eDNA metabarcoding and the traditional line transect method (TLTM) and identified the species–area relationship for amphibians on the islands. The mean detection probability of eDNA is 0.54, while the mean detection probability of TLTM is 0.24. The eDNA metabarcoding detected eight amphibian species on the islands and nine species in the mainland areas, compared with seven species on the islands and nine species in the mainland areas that were identified by TLTM. Amphibian richness on the islands increased with island area and habitat diversity. The species–area relationship for amphibians in the archipelago was formulated as the power function (S = 0.47A0.21) or exponential function (S = 2.59 + 2.41 (logA)). Our results suggested that eDNA metabarcoding is more sensitive for the detection of amphibian species. Beta diversity patterns are essential for understanding how biological communities are structured. Geographical and environmental factors, as well as species dispersal ability, are important drivers of beta diversity, but their relative importance may vary across spatial scales. In this study, we evaluate whether beta diversity changes across geographical scales and analyse how different drivers affect turnover patterns of native seed plants in an oceanic archipelago, the Azores (Portugal). Using a 500 × 500 m resolution grid, we selected cells that are covered by one of the following habitats: native forest, naturalized vegetation and seminatural pastures. We calculated species turnover at three spatial scales: 1) between islands, 2) between cells within each island, and finally 3) between cells of each of the habitats of interest in each island. We then calculated the contribution of dispersal syndromes (endozoochory, epizoochory, hydrochory and anemochory) to turnover at each of the scales. Lastly, we assessed the relationship between geographical and climatic distances and habitat type with turnover. Turnover was higher at the smallest spatial scale, particularly in seminatural pastures, and decreased with increasing spatial scales, a pattern potentially associated with the historical fragmentation and current patchy distribution of native forest and seminatural habitats in the Azores. Dispersal syndromes and habitat type had a negligible effect on turnover at all scales. Geographical distance had a positive effect on turnover at all scales, increasing its importance with scale. The relationship between turnover and climatic distance was only significant at the intermediate and small scales in specific islands and habitats. Therefore, scale plays an important role at determining the effect of the drivers of turnover, in particular geographical and climatic distance. These results highlight the need to carefully select the scale of analysis when studying turnover patterns, as well as identifying the potential drivers associated with each spatial scale. Body size is a key morphological attribute, often used to delimit species boundaries among closely related taxa. But body size can evolve in parallel, reaching similar final states despite independent evolutionary and geographic origins, leading to faulty assumptions of evolutionary history. Here, we document parallel evolution in body size in the widely distributed leaf-nosed bat genus Hipposideros , which has misled both taxonomic and evolutionary inference. We sequenced reduced representation genomic loci and measured external morphological characters from three closely related species from the Solomon Islands archipelago, delimited by body size. Species tree reconstruction confirms the paraphyly of two morphologically designated species. The nonsister relationship between large-bodied H. dinops lineages found on different islands indicates that large-bodied ecomorphs have evolved independently at least twice in the history of this radiation. A lack of evidence for gene flow between sympatric, closely related taxa suggests the rapid evolution of strong reproductive isolating barriers between morphologically distinct populations. Our results position Solomon Islands Hipposideros as a novel vertebrate system for studying the repeatability of parallel evolution under natural conditions. We conclude by offering testable hypotheses for how geography and ecology could be mediating the repeated evolution of large-bodied Hipposideros lineages in the Solomon Islands. The Indo-Australian Archipelago (IAA) today exhibits the highest marine biodiversity, which has been evolving since the early Miocene. The existence of this high palaeobiodiversity is attested to by the presence of many fossil invertebrates; however, the region's fossil fish record is sparse and understudied, which is also the case for cartilaginous fishes. Elasmobranch fossils are dominantly represented by shark and ray teeth in the geological record and can give a quick overview of the composition of the fauna. The first IAA elasmo fossils, shark teeth were described from Java (Indonesia) at the end of the 19th century, and until today, most of the publications are known from this island. In the early and middle of the 20th century, remarkable fossils were also reported from the islands of Madura (NE Java) and Sulawesi, some with detailed taxonomical descriptions. In addition, only sporadic reports on fossil occurrences exist elsewhere from the IAA, but these lack any detailed taxonomic accounts. In 2019 our research group reported a late Miocene elasmobranch fauna from Brunei (Borneo), which is now the most diverse known shallow water fossil assemblage from the entire IAA. This fauna was described from a single fossiliferous outcrop, called Ambug Hill. However, several new localities have been discovered and studied over the years, as a result the number of fossils increased, and their age range extended. Here we provide an overview of these new sites and their elasmobranch fossils, and describe remains from ten taxa among, of which eight are new to the IAA fossil record (Chiloscyllium sp., cf. Hemitriakis sp., Paragaleus sp., Carcharhinus borneensis, C. limbatus, Lamiopsis sp., Scoliodon sp., Rhinobatos sp.). The overall north Bornean elasmo assemblage is then compared with other IAA occurrences. An extended fauna list is given based on literature review and preliminary investigation of the Naturalis Biodiversity Centre collection in Leiden (The Netherlands) where most of the fossil fishes of the early explorations are stored. These assemblages are also briefly summarized, and attention is drawn to some of the unique and thus far unreported taxa (e.g., Dalatias licha). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We expound on a hydrographic and geophysical survey in the south of the Archipelago of San Andres, Providencia, and Santa Catalina (ASAPSC) in the Colombian Caribbean Sea. In 2017 and 2018, high-resolution data were acquired from the Caribbean Center for Oceanographic and Hydrographic Research (CIOH). The hydrographic data were processed and filtered per International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) standards and the geomagnetic data were processed, corrected, and filtered to improve the interpretation. We could then characterise the submarine relief, analyse the geomagnetic anomalies in the area, and identify different relief forms of volcanic origin. Regarding geomagnetic work, a spectral analysis of the anomalies revealed highly magnetic bodies in deep water and residual magnetic anomalies strongly related to the seabed morphology. Magnetic highs associated with the basement highs and volcanic cones were detected. Complementary spectral analysis showed that the shallowest magnetic sources were in the first 500 m, whereas the deepest magnetic sources were between the depths of 4 and 5 km. The geomagnetic data were also validated using Euler deconvolution analysis, which confirmed these magnetic anomalies. Thus, a direct relationship between the magnetic anomalies and bathymetry of the seafloor was confirmed, reinforcing the theory of the volcanic origin of these islands. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the early nineteenth century, the Western Caribbean, particularly the Archipelago of San Andres, Old Providence, and Santa Catalina, became the focal point of ambitious hydrographic surveys. Despite the region's rich maritime heritage, challenges posed by complex geomorphology, frequent hurricanes, and cold fronts led to historical charting inadequacies, turning the Archipelago into a perilous ship trap. This study delves into the Spanish Armada (1804–05) and the Royal Navy (1833–36) hydrographic surveys to interpret the Maritime Cultural Landscape (MCL) of the archipelago. The importance of the archipelago as a link between South America, the Isthmus of Panama, Havana (Cuba), and Europe highlights the significance of these surveys. A comparative analysis of the Spanish and British methods offers insights into their strategies amid the perilous survey environment. While integration of Spanish nautical information into the British survey is evident, it culminated in the wreck of HMS Jackdaw, illustrating mapping expedition complexities. This paper also evaluates the accuracy of British cartography using Geographic Information System (GIS) methodologies. By overlaying the 1835 Old Providence Island chart onto contemporary 2021 cartography, we showcase the standards and precision of British surveys through an analysis of coastline and hydrographic soundings. Personal memoirs, official records, and descriptive accounts weave the narrative of the rich MCL, emphasizing its historical importance, the region's maritime identity, and the intertwining of environmental factors and cultural heritage. Twenty-seven specimens of the fish species Terapon jarbua and 4 specimens of the fish species Terapon theraps were collected from the Cat Ba Archipelago marine area, and examined for parasite infection. Among these, 4 specimens of T. jarbua and 1 specimen of T. theraps were infected with a total of 42 monogeneans. The intensity of infection ranged from 1 to 16 worms per fish. Four monogenean species were identified, three of which belong to the Protogyrodactylidae: Protogyrodactylus gussevi (14 specimens) and Protogyrodactylus perforatus (12 specimens) were found on T. jarbua, while Protogyrodactylus solidus (1 specimen) was identified on T. theraps. The species Microcotyle helotes (17 specimens) was recorded for the first time in Vietnam, found in two individuals of the new host T. jarbua. The new permanent seismic station SVZ started working in Arctic (Severnaya Zemlya archipelago, Bolshevik Island), we discuss the first results of the local seismicity study. We have processed 46 local seismic events for 2017–2022. Data processing using a single seismic sensor is difficult, but using waveforms and spectral-temporal analysis of P, S, and surface waves, it is possible to separate shallow earthquakes from glacial events. We distinguish two types of icequakes—glacier-related events and pulses. An increase in seismic background noise is related to processes of glacial nature in summertime. Data processing allows to obtain the main peculiarities of local seismicity, i.e., mutual connection of glacial processes and crustal seismicity. We show the presence of icequakes induced by local crustal events; their epicenters confined to the ice domes edges. Spatio-temporal sequence and the rate of events migration show that the glacial events are a result of the defusing deformations process in the glaciers caused by the impact of shallow tectonic earthquakes. Thousands of pulsed and high-frequency micro-oscillations associate with the sea ice sheet or lake ice. The temporal variation of events' number and energy per day correlates with air temperature temporal variations. Moreover, there is a sharp increase in the number of pulses with sharp temperature changes. The greatest activity of this pulsed events is in winter and especially in March, connected with ice surface destruction. In case a network deployment is not feasible, even a single seismic station allows to get a useful information about the glacial and seismic processes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
