102. Acute nephrotoxicity of NSAID from the foetus to the adult

Abstract

NSAIDs are generally considered to be safe and well tolerated, but, even with the advent of selective COX-2 inhibitors, nephrotoxicity remains a concern. An impaired renal perfusion caused by the inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis is claimed like the more frequent cause of an acute renal failure due to NSAIDs, while a chronic interstitial nephritis or an analgesic nephropathy are believed the causes of a chronic renal failure. The real incidence of renal side effects of NSAIDs is still unclear and it differs between the age of the patients and the reports present in the literature. The occurrence of renal side effects following prenatal exposure to NSAIDs seems to be rare considering the large number of pregnant woman treated with indomethacin or other prostaglandin inhibitors. NSAID-related nephrotoxicity remains an important clinical problem in the newborns, in whom the functionally immature kidney may exert a significant effect on the disposition of the drugs. Instead, nephrotoxicity is a rare event in children and the risk is lower than adults. In healthy adult patients the incidence of renal adverse effects is very low, less than 1%. The risk increased with age. The elderly are at higher risk, and it is correlated at the presence of pretreatment renal disease, hypovolemia due to use of diuretics, diabetes, congestive heart failure or alteration of NSAID pharmacokinetics.

Abstract

Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) observations of 3C radio galaxies and quasars shed new light on the nature of the central engines of AGN. Emission from silicate dust obscuring the central engine can be used to estimate the bolometric luminosity of an AGN. Emission lines from ions such as O IV and Ne V give another indication of the presence or lack of a hidden source of far-UV photons in the nucleus. Radio-loud AGN with relative-to-Eddington luminosity ratios of L/L_(Edd) < 3 x 10^(−3) do not appear to have broad optical emission lines, though some do have strong silicate emission. Aromatic emission features from star formation activity are common in low-luminosity radio galaxies. Strong H2 pure-rotational emission lines are also seen in some mid-IR-weak radio galaxies, caused by either merger shocks or jet shocks in the interstellar medium.

Abstract

We present the results of deep infrared imaging in J, H, and K of the quiescent X-ray source located within the 1992 May 1 gamma-ray burst error box. The field is crowded, containing both stars and galaxies, and we discuss the Likelihood that they are associated with the X-ray source. Two objects (one star and one galaxy) appear to be the most interesting infrared candidates and are deserving of further study with optical spectroscopy. Independent of whether or not the galaxy is associated with the X-ray source, its presence in the gamma-ray burst error box is consistent with recent findings that bright galaxies are associated with gamma-ray bursts.

119. The Lyman edge test of the quasar emission mechanism

Abstract

The Lyman edge region in the spectra of 11 high-redshift quasars is studied using data designed to detect broadened Lyman edge absorption predicted by thermal models of the 'big blue bump' continuum component, especially thin accretion disks. Three objects have broadened, partial edges near the systemic redshifts, as expected for thermal models. In two cases, however, narrow Lyamn lines with the edge absorption, ruling out the disk interpretation. Thus, the data are negative for thermal models, at least for opaque thin accretion disks.

Abstract

About 10-arcsec resolution 20-cm wavelength maps are presented for three nearby BL Lac objects: Mkn 180, whose halo has a linear size of 85 kpc, 2155-304, with a halo about 375 kpc across, and 1727 + 502, whose one-sided diffuse emission extends to a distance of about 145 kpc from its radio core. Little evidence is found for strong radio variability in the cores of the three blazars; these and other results obtained are consistent with the assertion that the three objects should be classified as normal low luminosity double radio galaxies with optically dull nuclei, if seen from other directions.

138. A Comparison of Radio Axis with Host Galaxy Plane Axis in Seyfert Galaxies

Abstract

We use the radio axis as an indicator of the orientation of the obscuring torus in Seyfert galaxies, and analyze the difference between the position angles of extended radio structures and host galaxy major axis of Seyfert 1 and Seyfert 2 galaxies. We find that Seyfert 1's are less likely to have extended radio structures along the host galaxy major axis, while Seyfert 2's have these structures distributed in most directions. We also find a zone of avoidance in the distribution of position angles; both Seyfert 1's and Seyfert 2's seem to avoid close alignment between the radio axis and the host galaxy plane axis. These results are analyzed from the point of view of a model in which Seyfert 1's have their obscuring torus axis aligned preferentially along the host galaxy disk axis, and Seyfert 2's have their torus axis laying at an intermediate angle between the galaxy disk and its axis., Comment: 9 pages of text, 10 figures and 1 table. 139. VLBI Imaging of Water Maser Emission from the Nuclear Torus of NGC 1068

Abstract

We have made the first VLBI synthesis images of the H2O maser emission associated with the central engine of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 1068. Emission extends about +/-300 km/s from the systemic velocity. Images with submilliarcsecond angular resolution show that the red-shifted emission lies along an arc to the northwest of the systemic emission. (The blue-shifted emission has not yet been imaged with VLBI.) Based on the maser velocities and the relative orientation of the known radio jet, we propose that the maser emission arises on the surface of a nearly edge-on torus, where physical conditions are conducive to maser action. The visible part of the torus is axially thick, with comparable height and radius. The velocity field indicates sub-Keplerian differential rotation around a central mass of about 1e7 Msun that lies within a cylindrical radius of about 0.65 pc. The estimated luminosity of the central engine is about 0.5 of the Eddington limit. There is no detectable compact radio continuum emission near the proposed center of the torus (T_B< 5e6 K on size scales of about 0.1 pc), so that the observed flat-spectrum core cannot be direct self-absorbed synchrotron radiation., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures.
