102. Impact of Tissue Harmonic Imaging in Patients with Distorted Left Ventricles: Improvement in Accuracy and Reproducibility of Visual, Manual and Automated Echocardiographic Assessment of Left Ventricular Ejection Fraction.

Abstract

Aims: The aim of this study was to assess the incremental value of tissue harmonic imaging vs conventional echocardiography for evaluating left ventricular ejection fraction by manual and automated quantitation as well as visual estimation in patients with distorted left ventricles.Methods and Results: In 25 patients unselected for image quality and with distorted left ventricles who underwent a nuclear study, digital cineloops of standard apical views were acquired by both tissue harmonic imaging and conventional echocardiography and sent to six observers for analysis of visual and quantitative left ventricular ejection fraction. Tissue harmonic imaging improved both the correlation and agreement of all echo techniques with nuclear measures, compared with conventional echocardiography echo, reducing standard errors (SE) to below 10%: for the visual estimate SE=7·5%, for manual tracing SE=6·3% and for automated tracing SE=8%. Tissue harmonic imaging decreased inter-observer variability compared with conventional echocardiography echo for both visual assessment (12·4% vs 18·4%, P<0·05) and quantitative measures (for manual tracing, 8·2% vs 11·8%, P<0·05; for automated tracing, 7·8% vs 16·8%, P<0·05).Conclusions: In patients with distorted left ventricles unselected for image quality, tissue harmonic imaging improves accuracy and reproducibility of both visual and quantitative echocardiographic assessment of left ventricular ejection fraction. Abstract

The tetradentate Schiff base ligands N,N‘-bis[5-(4‘-n-alkyl)phenylazosalicylidene]alkyldiamine H2LN(n) (n = 6, 14), based on 1,2-diaminoethane (N = 1), 1,3-diaminopropane (N = 2), and 1,3-diamino-2,2-dimethylpropane (N = 3) were prepared and characterized. For all the ligands complexes M[LN(n)] (M = Cu, Ni, VO) were readily obtained, which contained two free azo functions. The three series of complexes M[LN(n)] (N = 1−3) were investigated for mesomorphism. This was observed only for N = 1 or 2, in the form of enantiotropic nematic (lower homologues) or smectic (higher homologues) mesophases. The thermal behavior of complexes is discussed on the basis of the structural characteristics of the N,N chelate rings.

Abstract

The incidence of M.S. in Sardinia has been found to be the highest in Southern Italy. On "prevalence day", October 21st, 1971, the incidence was 12.48/100,000 inhabitants, whereas the rates in Campania and in Puglia, (regions of Southern Italy at the same latitude as Sardinia) the rates were 3.3 and 4.0 respectively. In the present study, a significant female predominance was found, the rates for women and men being 15.88 and 9.03 respectively. The incidence of MS in the study area was found to be significantly higher both in areas with a cool humid climate and in communities with the lowest socioeconomic conditions. A significantly higher incidence was computed for communities with less than 5,000 inhabitants. MS incidence had no correlation with the occupational status and dietary habits, which are uniformly distributed throughout the island. The disease started at au average of 27.3 years and its duration on "prevalence day" was 13.4 years. The age of onset was found to be low in comparison with other population studies in Europe and in North-Central Italy. The age-specific curves of onset and on "prevalence day" showed two peaks, one in the second-third decade and one in the forth-fifth decade. Most of the patients with an earlier onset showed a complete disappearance of the symptoms after the first bout.

Abstract

The H-index was studied in 42 healthy subjects and in 20 patients showing unilateral S1 root compression. When compared to the normal subjects, all patients showed a decreased H-index, or an increased difference in H-index between the sides or both. These results indicate that both parameters are valuable in the diagnosis of S1 root impairment due to intervertebral disc protrusion.
