These slides have been presented at the Stelline 2013 National Congress. In this work is analysed the relationship between science and society, and how the role of the academic library acts inside new balance environment changed by new technologies. The first point treated is the market of economy of knowledge focused on the value of the information chain in scholarship communication which can not be merely an "economic" value. Then we arrive to the role of the academic library in penetrating the society ... passing through the reflection of business models, not so much what are existing today, but what is meant by business model ...towards distribution model. Open Access is perceived as social pervasiveness tool. On the basis of the old paper (published 15 years ago) by the Dutch Roosendaal and Guerts focused on the forces and functions of scientific information we reflect and compare on the light of their recent work (written after 15 years) the new strategical positioning of scientific research towards social environment. In this dimension we detected 4 possible ways to act as researchers in the social environment. Because as a result of the platforms and social networks 2.0, research and society meet emerging new ways of communicating science and new ways to incorporate scientific results within the social environment. The researchers, in other words, leave the Ivory Tower and placed in a new way in order to build a real scientific citizenship (mode3 research entrepreneuse). The libraries in this dimension are placed in constant equilibrium with new professions emerging, and some of which are the legacy of a tradition passed, but some are new activities and also strategically positioned relative to the ecosystem.

As one of the main public buildings libraries are required to be involved in seeking solutions for environmental problems such as climatic changes, environmental pollution, energy consumption. Green library or sustainable library means environment friendly and energy saving library building. As a center of continuous education for life time it is necesseray to make library buildings to be good examples for the people in terms of awareness and approaches on environmental issues. They contribute to maintain the natural balance, produce less waste, and are built with low budget but in good quality. However, applications of green library buildings are based on different requirements comraing to the other gren buildings. The aim of this paper is to examine the green library buildings; to determine the difference between other green buildings and green library buildings in terms of requirements; and to give information on how to meet those of requirements.

The paper stems from elaborated PhD thesis focused about different law information systems and their comparison with similar information systems in Germany and USA. The paper deals with methods of evaluation of various kinds of law information systems. The paper also deals, why it is so difficult to evaluate the quality of legal information systems, and about the (in)applicability of the conventional evaluation methods as efficiency or effectiveness. The paper brings its own criteria to evaluate legal information systems with, as connectivity or provided user help. These criteria will be explained using different kinds of Czech and foreign legal information systems.

The Institutional Repositories (IR) have been consolidated into the institutions in cientific and academic areas, as shown by the directories existing open access repositories and the deposits daily of articles made ​​by different ways, such as by self-archiving of registered users and the cataloging by librarians. IR systems are based on various conceptual models, so in this paper a bibliographic survey Model-Driven Development (MDD) in systems and applications for RI in order to expose the benefits of applying MDD in IR. The MDD is a paradigm for building software that assigns a central role models and active under which derive models ranging from the most abstract to the concrete, this is done through successive transformations. This paradigm provides a framework that allows interested parties to share their views and directly manipulate representations of the entities of this domain. Therefore, the benefits are grouped by actors that are present, namely, developers, business owners and domain experts. In conclusion, these benefits help make more formal software implementations, resulting in a consolidation of such systems, where the main beneficiaries are the end users through the services are offered.

This presentation introduces new profiles and hybrid profiles in the area of Library and Information Science in contact with other areas or disciplines such as Science, Culture and Humanities, Technology and Informatics, Business and Communication. This papers ("Labor political strategies for the emancipation of the neo-slavery of informational and cognitive capitalism") tries to be an approximation to a guide for political action with an integral view for the diverse social movements within or outside the sciences of information recorded in documents (as librarianship or library science) that separately analyze, criticize, denounce, and resist the bourgeouis neo-slavery of capitalism based on information and knowledge, as it is called here by its true name and essence that the sychophant charlatans under the service of the neo-liberal and neo-conservative bourgeoisie (included thos of the “social,” “intelectual,” “human”, and “cultural” capitals) always and euphemistically try to conceal it.

Virtual worlds are objects of much research. Such research is needed for future wider application within education, science field or market domain. For instance, Hype cycle presents that virtual worlds are coming in productive phase in 5-10 years. Virtual world as we know today are not user friendly or effective as a seriously used communication tool. Of course, there is a lot of progress in this area. Let me consider Facebook plug-in for instance, which brings much easier login process compared to Second Life or Open Simulator installed client. Second thing could be release of SL Viewer 2.0. However, studies show that there are a lot of users demotivated or disappointed from the virtual world`s environment and after their first visit they never come back. That has to change. Paper focuses at the problem from Information science point of view. Specifically, the author takes user-centered design as a core approach, which is needed to improve software usability. Usability as a broader term for experienced usability, apparent usability, user friendliness, quality of user interface, etc. must be measured and evaluated. The target of the paper is to present methodology of testing and evaluating virtual world environments. Paper summarizes core steps within user-center design, which is user task analysis, expert guidelines-based evaluation, formative user-centered evaluation, summative comparative evaluation. More closely, user task analysis contains pre-research, which is needed for understanding of users` needs, their work culture and their work goals, which they perform daily. There are work scenarios developed within expert guidelines-based evaluation and then users go through them within formative user-centered evaluation. After redesign of environment users go through two or more variations of developed user interfaces and analyze which one is better. There is going to be a short overview of the virtual region VIAKISK within Open Simulator presented as well.

This article is framed within an ongoing doctoral research that is based on the use of social media (blogs, wikis, Facebook, Twitter, among others) in higher education. Under the perspectives of participatory action research, information literacy and constructivist learning, a series of learning interventions, activities and assignments have been planned. These have been grouped under the research framework called ‘doing online relearning through information skills’. Within this research and in the pertinent literature, information literacy and participatory action research are useful means for researchers and professionals to be able to develop diverse purposes. Among other purposes, to contribute to user training for the better use of information services, to promote these services; create, share, and multiply knowledge; use knowledge to research and improve society's practices and activities; create social and cultural sensitivity; inclusion, emancipation and a critical consciousness within citizens. The data collection methods used in this research are: a diagnostic questionnaire, a blog, students' reports, a follow up questionnaire and semi-structured interviews; the data analysis method is content analysis. Despite the fact that this research is focused on higher education and social media, some of its elements can be useful for researchers, librarians, educators and other professionals, to enrich their social investigations, information literacy programs, or their pedagogies. These elements are the theories of the three dimensions of learning and affinity spaces; the epistemological assumptions, participatory action research, the methods for data collection and analysis; and the research framework that has been developed.

In the current environment crisis is even more urgent to incorporate technological innovations that aim to improve health care favoring more efficient processes and decisions with better information, timely and on time. It presents a reflection from our immediate surroundings, Catalonia, and from the viewpoint of a hospital provider of health services in a public health system. This is about the reflection of the ICT infrastructure in the broadest sense: patients / clients, professionals, technologies and processes, and incorporates both the roles of professionals and patients and the handling of data and information in the healthcare environment. Emphasized the value of ICT in service organizations as a tool for improvement and transformation, but also as a strategic investment for the future. We review the main features to get the ICT process improvement and improved decision making. Take references of scientific papers on the impact of ICT and the value of information about health care and its contribution to improving the health and sustainability of the system. It emphasizes the behavior of agents as a factor essential to harness the potential of ICT and the changing roles of both the patients and the Directors of Information Systems, among other agents. Here are presented some advances in high-impact projects (Electronic medical records, etc..) and the necessary interoperability between systems. Include the interrelationships within systems, such as those relating to governance and customer-supplier chains. In conclusion, the virtuous circle of ICT in the health sector that aims to show the interrelationships between processes, technologies, data management and information professionals and end up getting to the intended goal which is none other than the improvement of attention focused on the patient.

Health Sociology can be defined as a discipline that use methods of sociological research, to study the relationship between health and social factors, that induce the behavior of individuals or groups, when exposed to situations of disease and / or health quality environments. National Library of Medicine (NLM) enfathises that, in the main research areas of health sociology, are included for instance the influence of gender, ethnicity, age or socioeconomic status on access to health care and also social behaviors of individuals, beliefs and socio-cultural changes when diseases occurs, allied to the roles developed for health institutions and health professionals in society, based on communication techniques and patient education methods that makes use of new technologies and biomedical innovations. In the last recent years, health sociology researchers observed in people’s behaviour an increasing of concern about their physical and mental well-being and health practices that lead to a healthy life allied to the necessity to be constantly well informed about diseases, diagnosis, prognosis and treatments according to tradicional medicine procedures or considering new procedures adopted for alternative medicines. These social behaviors, changed the way as the doctor and the patient are communicating and the easier access to new technologies of information, social networks and discussion forums, rather than facilitate and clarify patient questions and doubts, are causing enthropy and anxiety when they are seeking for answers to their health problems in non scientific health information sources that they should avoid. How can health librarians take advantage of this social context to build new services and in the same time support their users - the doctors and future doctors - in improving the relationship and communication with their patients by providing credible information and translating medical terminology to an inteligible and accessible information that patients can understand? How do health libraries will get a new type of users – general public - providing easy access on issues related to preventive health care and quality of life? How digital literacy can help to facilitate this task? This communication aims to address these issues and present some examples of best practices existing in national and international context, alerting to the importance of developping cooperation projects in multidisciplinary teams that include librarians, doctors and government agencies in order to improve health literacy.

The library building is one of the five basic elements that make up the library today as it was in the past. The library building is designed, built and begins to meet the needs of the users after the usage phase. There may be disabled people among the users of the building (who are users of the collection or library staff). To be a disabled person should not cause any disruption in using the services provided by the library. Library buildings should be designed so that all users can benefit from all library services equally. Because everyone has the right to use the library equally. However, this purpose cannot be fully reflected in practice. Disabled users sometimes encounter problems until they come to the library building, sometimes inside the building (sometimes even in both environments). In this study, physical and visually impaired users were taken as a basis and the problems these users encountered in the physical exterior and interior environments outside the building were briefly examined.

Objective: to develop and propose a methodology to identify the information’s production and use for informal sector workers. Methodology: descriptive study which principal proposal theoretical basis of information science to identify information sources and its use of informal workers supporting with quantitative methodology. Results: we found and analyse definitions and information phenomenology and informal sector through information science and the economy respectively. From social sciences we propose to use tools to informal workers study, especially qualitative methodology. Conclusion: information science offers us the opportunity to study information phenomenology of informal worker’s sector. From economy we consider informal worker definitions as a component of informal sector. Social sciences permit us to identify the information use by qualitative methodology.

Human has a difference of perception because of his/her training and previous experiences. The variety of perception may has different reflections at various areas. The variety of perception on some words about information centers and services were examined from different angles in this study. In this study, the perception of sampling on the some concepts of information centers and services were analyzed in different ways. By this aim, a survey was conducted and according to independent variables as age, gender and socioeconomic statues, the perceptions of sampling related to this subject was xamined.

Refers to the differences between the Sciences and the Humanities as described in Charles Snow's famous lecture on The Two Cultures, presented at the University of Cambridge in 1959. For Snow, the industrialization was the only path to advancement by poor countries. That argument was not altogether new. In the Unites States, there had been occasions when the importance of the Sciences for the development of that country had been debated, and the relevance of the Humanities, as well, as the basis of forming productive thinking habits. Despite the marked differences between the various disciplines of the Sciences and between those and the Humanities, there are similarities in the methods of the Two Cultures. In History, for instance, scholarly communication practices approximate those in the Sciences. Recent research in Information Science in Brazil, looking at the current practices of historians of Colonial Brazil, show similarities to practices that until the 1980s were especially characteristic of the Natural Science, such as multiple authorship of articles, participation in collaborative projects, and the heavy use of technologies of information and communication There is evidence that nowadays the gap between the Sciences and the Humanities has become smaller. Snow’s ideas are a contribution to the History of Sciences and to Information Science, even though the Sciences have suffered major transformations due to the epistemic approximations proper of interdisciplinarity.

We try to explain a new challenge for the profession of librarian. The challenge is give a name to be understood by small and medium enterprises, it is speaking their language. This type of organization can not afford a librarian or an information manager full time so you should train staff so they can meet their needs and organizational information. We define the tools and skills that are accorded to people who want to dedicate this occupational field. Is a translation of user training in the field of libraries, applied to the business world.

In Slovenia librarianship has had a rich and successful tradition, and today it is well in line with the most advanced developments and trends in the world. Surprisingly no systematic concern had been paid to library terminology in the past and no organized attempt to attain its codification and authority in dictionaries. Recently two dictionaries have filled the gap, a translation dictionary and an explanatory dictionary of library terminology. They were both concieved and built in accordance with up-to-date principles of modern lexicography, thus they were based on the excerption of a set of selected technical and scientific texts in librarianship and library science, the excerption being manual at the time, of course. A list of selected and evaluated headings was produced from excerpted texts to initiate the building of the dictionary. The lexicographers keep following closely current modern trends in lexicography, consequently they have designed and set up the Slovene text corpus in the field of library and information science, a powerful and efficient tool for editing and amending of the existing Dictionary of Library Terminology. The corpus has reached 1.8 million words extracted from 234 Slovene technical and scientific texts. It supports a varisty of specialized search methods, display of search results – words in close or wider context, and building of customized word lists for text and word analysis. The web based application is in open access.

[The scientific communication, openness and cooperation on Social Networking Sites] The National Reform Programme for 2008–2011 for Lisbon Strategy focuses among others on intensification of knowledge exchange – mobility of researchers, increasing the importance of the concept of open learning – open access to the knowledge, active society and efficient scientific institutions. Scientists begin to accept social network as a place where scientific information can be provided, new contacts can be forged and appraisal as well as identification of people can be carried out. Social portals are one of the tools which allow the flow of knowledge and scientific communication by using different means: discussion groups thematic forums, blogs, chat rooms and others. They make it possible to create own profile as well as a list of scientific papers which can help in increasing their citedness. Internet websites created by social networks promote openness and cooperation, which also assists in the creation of research teams combining the specialists of different branches and from different countries. In this paper the social portals for researchers were examined: ResearcherID, Research Gate, Scientix. The possibility of open access to data, the results of studies and publications, especially the life science ones were analysed. Different ways of searching scientific achievements and free access to work were compared. The attention was drawn to the activity of Polish and foreign researchers. Users profiles were overviewed for data that can be available on the Net. On the base of this analysis it was noticed that the profiles created by scientists can be helpful in librarians work on setting up the database of publications of the university staff.

Fraser Health librarians will describe the liaison librarian program they have been a part of the last 3 years in Fraser Health. This program has attempted to actively reach out and provide library support to underserved health professionals and programs such as Aboriginal Health, Geriatric services and nursing.

These handouts are from a workshop on family law for public librarians presented to the BC Library Association Conference in April 2011. Some of the basics in family law in BC were covered by the lawyer who hosts the website www.bcfamilylawresource.com. Topics included the court system, alternatives to litigation, the law on children (custody, guardianship, child support), spousal support, marriage and divorce and new developments in family law. Current resources to help the public with their questions were also presented.

The authors describe the domestic patterns of authorship, reference and citation in Spain. The results of the investigation reveal the extent to which these practices are widespread in Spain compared with countries with which it exchanges more scientific information. We present data establishing the composition of its import/export intellectual balance, oriented primarily towards the leading countries like USA, or occupy top positions, as United Kingdom and Germany. China emerges as a significant importer.

Refers to the flow of information from the Islamic civilization during the times that preceded the roots of Modern Science, as well as the importance of Arab book collectors, scribes, and scientists as actors in the registration and transmission of cultural and scientific information between the 4th and the 15th centuries, their main activities and achievements, such as translation of Greek texts into Arabic, creation of mosques as institutions of learning, and the creation of science. A brief approach to the European context during the same time is given. In the past few decades researchers of Islamic colonial science have been arguing that there was a significant contribution from the Islamic world to modern science, so its roots should consider this fact, and not only the West. This was due to a flow of information and documents that allowed the circulation and transfering of knowledge at the time. More recent discussions bring in a new way to look at science´s roots in its movement from the East to the West.

It is without doubt, that the involvement of the academics is essential in the training process and use of the Library by the students. The collaboration between the Library of the Cyprus University of Technology (CUT) and the faculty is achieved through the liaison librarians. The liaison librarians within this framework have taken on the task of training the users in order to teach them how to make full use of the Library’s resources and services. The fundamental objective of the Library is to help the users become independent researchers and critical thinkers. Through information literacy users will develop skills needed to evaluate and use the information effectively in problem-solving and decision making affecting their professional and personal life. The study describes the effort of providing information literacy to the users through training seminars provided by the CUT Library in cooperation with the academics. The case study of the Department of Nursing also presents the evaluation results of the seminars which were performed to the first year students of the Department during the academic year 2009-2010.

The main purpose of this research is to calculate performance of visualization methods through calculating the time lapse between search results display and access to the item and analyze the results statistically. In this study, three methods have been considered to help users: Viewing the book place in three-dimention, showing location of the book by color symbols and using graphic symbols.

This paper (An approximation towards the creation of a critical, analytical, and integral model of research in the sciences of information recorded in documents or the spirit of Eratosthenes) shows grosso modo an approximationn to the creation of an analytical, critical and integral model of analysis, based in the spirit of Eratosthenes for research in the sciences of information recorded in documents (e.g. LIS) in which the author (Muela Meza, 2010, 2009; 2008; 2007; 2006ª; 2005b; 2005c; 2004ª; 2004b) has been working in the last years. In addition, The construction of this model per se was part of the future themes for research that emerge from the author's doctoral thesis (Community Profiling to Analyse Community Information Needs, and Providers: Perceptions from the People of the Broomhall Neighbourhood of Sheffield, UK) (Muela Meza, 2010).

Do your learners giggle and chortle in your classes? Does an excited buzz take over when you give them a task to do? Do they fight over which of the prepared questions they're going to ask during your library tour (and do they share these questions with their friends in other classes)? Do they react with surprise and secret delight to your online tutorial? Gaining your learners' attention can be challenging – everything from texting and Facebook to multiple academic and personal priorities are taking up valuable space in your learners' heads at any given moment. Sometimes the most effective teaching tool is the element of surprise – inserting the unexpected, thereby allowing you to gain or regain attention, if only for long enough to make your next point. In this session you'll be introduced to a number of ways to not only gain attention, but also generate buzz, excitement and interest among your learners.

How do we learn to teach? Few librarians have access to formal coursework in library school that can aid in developing a theoretical framework for teaching, and particularly for teaching in the contexts we do. Rather, most of us rely on formal and informal networks or communities, stories about our experiences, and experimentation and reflection. Fortunately, librarians tend to be very generous and willing to share, but librarians are also very busy individuals, and sometimes find it hard to carve out the time, or to find colleagues who can carve out the time, to play, share and help each other along our path to becoming experienced teachers. The presenters for this session have each spent time reflecting on what it means to be both a librarian and a teacher and on how we learn to teach, and they will share several ideas and strategies for developing as a teacher, creating community within the workplace, and seeking out ideas and best practices beyond the workplace.

This paper presents in general, from the perspective of Activity Theory and Action Media, a schema for understanding, as activity stage-systems, the processes of teaching-learning of university information competences: Information Literacy (Models and Standards) and Information Seeking and Use Behaviour (Models) to allow higher levels and results in the formation process and behaviours. In turn, more specifically, and as a result to the scheme, also provides an analysis form to understand what Activity System element responds to the different norms-competences-results of most internationally recognized standard in this area “Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education” by ALA/ACRL, (integrating that format other internationally recognized standards: ANZIIL, CAUL, DHI Ciudad Juárez), and so, identifying personal, group and institutional strengths or weaknesses in the different InterActions, all this, considering key aspects of context: university / Colombian, Latin-American and/or Ibero-American.

This research describes the theoretical and methodological foundations of content analysis of pictorial portraits, considering them as artistic texts whose visual and iconic discourse can be analyzed and verbalized through documentary representations in information systems. It proposes a theoretical model that identifies and analyzes the production, use and reception contexts of the portraits. It develops an applied methodology that allows the writing of summaries and controlled descriptors as the systematizing of the sources of information. Finally it formulates an algorithm of analysis that works as standardized procedure and methodological norm. This algorithm systematizes the subject analysis and the documentary representation and sequences the levels of the retrieval. It is a normalized format that structures the information in areas and later on in fields, each one of them picks up the relationships and the attributes. The theoretical pattern and the analysis methodology have been applied on a representative sample of 80 portraits painted by F. de Goya, between 1783 and 1828.

The objective of this study is to analyze the way in which libraries participate as mediators in the learning communities and the way in which knowledge is constructed. The precedent for this research is a doctoral project where the library is conceived as a learning community within the framework of social relations and the construction of knowledge. The type of study is analytical and descriptive. As a result we have after describing the elements, functions and products libraries an analysis of how information literacy in students develop and how the tacit and explicit knowledge is constructed from the supply of certain services is presented as the user instruction and courses on the management and use of information. From this contribution we propose a Model to conceive the library as a learning community.

How can the prestige of research centres forming part of scientific co-authorship networks focused on Physiology and Pharmacology be measured? This paper attempts to answer that question on the basis of a bibliometric analysis of Spanish scientific production in these areas of research between 1995 and 2005 as listed in Thomson Reuters’ Science Citation Index Expanded.

In recent years the area of school libraries has known an important development as a research domain. The consolidation of the School Libraries Network, launched in 1996 and currently covering a large majority of schools / groups of schools, has facilitated a more incisive and analytical eye on this new reality in Portugal. As a pedagogical structure within the school, the coordination of the school library requires particularly knowledge in both fields of Education and Information Science. So, this is also a field of study which makes essential that an alliance between Information Science and the area of Education must take place. The onset of masters courses, with School Libraries as an object of study (preferred or complement), has also created the preconditions for developing a more focused and specific research. These are the main points we propose to address, reflecting on the most productive intersections in these two areas, their points of contact and divergence, the paradigms of research involved and the limitations presented by the Portuguese set, which is still emerging in these fields of research.

In the last 20 years there have been big changes in the Portuguese academic libraries services as academic libraries over the world. These changes include the adoption of automatic catalogues and the electronic access to bibliographic data bases and scientific journals in full text. Nowadays physical and digital sources are together. Professors, students and researchers are able to access simultaneous to a great amount of quality information pay and open access. The Portuguese Government has been investing to improve the access to the production of knowledge so as to develop the country. It is important to know the return on the investments in university libraries. The purpose of this paper is to identify the impact of the electronic sources in the Portuguese academic libraries. This paper describes an ongoing project to assess: •The use of electronic scientific information and the correlation to the scientific production of the Portuguese academic community according to standard performance measures indicators and bibliometrics data. •The economic value of these library services. In order to estimate in monetary terms the value of these services for end-users we use the contingent valuation method (CVM).This study reports the results of a quantitative e-survey of academic community.

The adequacy of higher education degrees to the Bologna process implied, in many cases, a change in the selection of the various possible approaches, depending on the scientific-technical domain and on the essence of each curricular unit (CU), to the teaching/learning process. The accent switched from knowledge transmission to skills development through an active participation of the student inside the process itself. In Information Science (IS), the subject area of Information Retrieval (IR) is an exciting challenge in applying the principles of Bologna either by belonging to the «core» of IS either by being an area where there has always been a great research activity. Through a review of the latest literature about teaching and learning in IR, a case study is presented on developing a CU where b-learning is used as a strategy for developing skills in future information professionals. Beyond the skills to develop in students, the selection of the CU program and the methods / techniques of teaching, are also explored and discussed the evaluation methods that may be more appropriate in a CU with these characteristics. Through the analysis of data concerning the performance evaluation of students by the teacher and the evaluation of the CU by the students, it is concluded that the adoption of the mixed education system b-learning has a positive impact on the development of skills of IR. Finally, new developments and experiences are considered within the CU «Information Retrieval» in the degree of Science and Technologies of Documentation and Information of the Escola Superior de Estudos Industriais e de Gestão at the Instituto Politécnico do Porto.

The notion of education as fundamental Human Right, which is considered to be essential for the exercise of other human rights by United Nations and UNESCO, are discussed. The need to introduce contents and skills about this matter at all educational level, especially Library and Documentation graduation studies in Spain and Portugal are analysed in comparison to United Nations recommendations. An outline of proposals to change current situation and implement curriculum for these graduation studies in line with international recommendations.

Objective: Health researchers today must understand and respond to open access issues and requirements. This program description of a research centre's open access activities considers the question of whether lessons from community organizing models can be adapted by librarians embedded within a research environment to effectively help transition research groups and organizations to a more open access model of functioning. Methods: Case study of the program of Open Access activities within a health research institute with an embedded librarian, and comparison of such activities with principles of community organizing models. Activities highlighted include: education sessions, meetings/fora, creating a core committee, outreach to support key community leaders and “grow” new organizers, creating shared community infrastructure, and collaborative research projects that address questions and needs of various members of the community. Results: While some elements of some community organizing models are inappropriate to the academic environment, other elements can inform strategies to effectively reach researchers, helping a research unit to transition to the new landscape of information delivery and knowledge translation. Discussion: Librarians embedded within research groups are ideally positioned, as conduits between the information policy world and the health research community, to use strategies adapted from community organizing models to educate, support and transition researchers in the new Open Access era.

This presentation discusses students' perception of the Academic Librarian as a teacher. When we provide library instruction, are we really teaching or are we giving a presentation? Is library instruction the same as an actual class? Is library instruction just another way to promote and market library services?

In this qualitative study, rehabilitation therapists (occupational therapists, physiotherapists, and speech-language pathologists) working in stroke care will be asked about their clinical questions. The goals of the study are: to identify common characteristics of questions, to develop a typology of questions, and to uncover reasons why certain questions are pursued.

This work aims to discuss how photographic document's specificity needs particular attention when those materials are integrated into an archive. For that, we propose to initially discuss the primary aspects that define an archival document to further on typify contemporary archives and how photographic materials began to be integrated by those institutions. That issue requires a reflection about the relations between photographic image representation and archival documentary authenticity; and between photographic image representation and the alleged "veracity" of the photographic information. The clarification of the problems posed by that discussion achieves the existent contrast between the two main organization models for photographic pictures in archives: by issue topics (of librarian inspiration and greater use) and by context (more adequate to archives). The archival contextualization arises, many times, as the only alternative for the comprehension of dubious images, images with illusion effects, or with extremely generic information. Finally, we present examples of archival organization for the three types of archival photographic materials occurrences: photographic pictures integrated to other documents (e.g. in a dossier); isolated photographic pictures as a final result of an action (e.g. pictures of a public agency’s communication office); as well as photographic pictures gathered as a collection, without any organic relation to an administrative producer. We conclude that archival principles, mainly in the case of photographic picture in archives, are most of the times the only guarantee to a correct comprehension of documents’ meaning.

The purpose of this paper is to discuss and identify some benefits of Open access (OA) initiatives in Portugal and Brazil. Open access is a powerful tool to promote knowledge and means that any individual user, anywhere, who has access to the Internet, may link, read, download, store, print-off, use, and data-mine the digital content of a research article published in peer-reviewed journals. This article usually has limited copyright and licensing restrictions. OA is an idea that might change the publishing landscape to bring benefits to many researchers all over the world and to approach them for international partnerships. That integration will result in benefits for all the nations. Besides many countries have the problem of the lack of visibility of the knowledge generated by their researchers. There are a lot of important OA initiatives in Brazil and Portugal. These initiatives appear in differentiated development stages. It is very important to establish partnerships and to gather efforts inside of the country and, also, with other countries to take advantage of the internet resources. These issues will certainly lead to the emergence of larger projects, with more visibility, quality and improvement of costs.

“No university teacher likes to be reminded of discussions of appointments, for they are seldom agreeable. And yet I may say that in the numerous cases known to me there was, without exception, the good will to allow purely objective reasons to be decisive. However, the decision over academic fates is too often largely a 'hazard'”. In his well-known lecture Wissenschaft als Beruf (1918), Science as a Vocation, Max Weber underlined the limitations of an appointment procedure based on building consensus among peers. However, his reflection can also be interpreted as a specific instance of the more general problem of the relationship between objectivity and evaluation. In his lecture, Weber sees Science as both a vocation and a profession. His analysis starts from the differences and analogies of the career and retirement system in German and American universities, which he considers respectively “plutocratic” and bureaucratic. This presentation isn't focused on studying appointment procedures but rather scholarly peer review. Hence, the link with the arguments of the German sociologist, may not appear so evident at a first sight. However, it suddenly becomes visible if we consider the topic from a philosophical and sociological point of view. From this perspective, peer review procedures are clearly connected both to the role of science within the academia and its influence on the society in general. A reflection on evaluation procedures involves scientific and moral issues concerning knowledge production and its dissemination. It also involves careers, funding and the basic structure of the “Republic of Science” itself. The reviewing procedures used today are almost exclusively based on the good will of the reviewers to keep the evaluation on an objective ground. A premise that I consider, like Weber does, largely insufficient and hazardous. This presentation has three objectives: – Firstly, it aims at clarifying the motivations and the historical context that led to the birth of peer review. – Secondly, it aims at reflecting, from a political philosophy perspective, on the impact of evaluation procedures on the government of the Republic of Science. To put it in simple terms: Is the Republic of Science a proper Republic? Which form of government should be chosen for an Open Scholarly Community on the web? – Thirdly, it aims at proposing a novel approach to peer review that could be adopted in Open Scholarly Communities on the Web. I call this approach “open soft peer review”.

Over the last twelve months Knowledge Management (KM) has become the latest hot topic in the business world. There has been a phenomenal growth in interest and activity, as seen in many new publications, conferences, IT products, and job advertisements. Various professional groups, notably HR professionals, IT specialists, and librarians, are staking their claims, seeing KM as an opportunity to move centre stage. People often used to describe librarianship as the organization of recorded knowledge, so perhaps our time has come.

Library staff at the University of Victoria identified four main literacy instruction challenges - time, lack of student engagement, lack of relevancy to students, and lack of faculty awareness. They presented proposed solutions to address these issues. A handout was circulated and is included here.

This pre-conference is intended to introduce participants to a unique, place-based approach to the planning and design of cities and towns and their public spaces, including libraries. Participants will be encouraged to think about their institutions and facilities in a new light and will be introduced to practical tools and techniques that they can use in applying these ideas. As the source of our province’s greatest potential for becoming a liveable, walkable community place, the civic centres of British Columbia’s cities, towns and villages, and the adjacent streets, parks, and neighbourhoods, will comprise the focus of the workshop. We will spend the day exploring the principles of making places through walking tours, presentations, case studies, a Place Performance Evaluation exercise, group discussions and the close examination of the public spaces proximate to some of Richmond’s key civic institutions, including the library and art museum. Through this “Placemaking” process, you will learn how to facilitate collaboration among community members to create a vision around the places that are viewed as important to community life and to their daily experience and to identify quick, short-term, low-cost improvements that can be implemented in partnership with local residents as well as public and private sector partners. Based on Project for Public Spaces’s 32 years of experience in placemaking, and inspired by their popular book, How to Turn a Place Around, the workshop will demonstrate to participants a unique approach to contextual town centre revitalization, sustainable economic growth, and community development.
