101. Recent trends and explanation for airborne137Cs activity level increases in France

Abstract

Airborne 137 Cs level in France is not decreasing significantly anymore (mean yearly value around 0,25 µ Bq.m-3 contrarily to what was noticed in the past decades. This observation points out the role of processes that delay the atmospheric cleaning and participate to the persistence of radionuclide in the air at ground-level after a deposit, in the frame of medium as well as long-dated post-accidental contexts. The current background level also yields to consider 137 Cs in the atmosphere as a tracer of atmospheric processes like resuspension and re-emission from biomass burnings. This allows us to explain 2/3 of the peaks observed over the last six years. The remaining 1/3 is mainly noticed in winter when spreading of pollutants in the atmosphere is often weak due to temperature gradient inversion. On average, continental air masses are responsible for increases by a factor of 3 while oceanic air masses are characterised by levels 3 times lower, compared to the mean value. Feeding of 137 Cs in air at ground-level is the result of both local resuspension that signs 137 Cs activity levels in soils to which is added a remote contribution from time to time (resuspension of Saharan dust or re-emission from fires occurring in eastern territories with high 137 Cs deposition level). Finally, 137 Cs activity levels in air masses crossing over France can be described on average by a longitudinal gradient.

Abstract

International audience; This paper presents the latest development of the laboratory to measure the natural and artificial massic activities in environmental samples. The measurement method of coincident emitters by gamma–gamma coincidence using an anti-Compton device and its digital electronics is described. Results obtained with environmental samples are shown. Despite its low efficiency, this method decreases detection limits of 60Co for certain samples compared to conventional gamma-ray spectrometry due to its very low background.

Abstract

International audience; Airborne cesium isotopes (134Cs and 137Cs) released during the Fukushima nuclear accident were transported all around the world attached to particles and reached France about 12 days after the first explosion. Concentration of cesium isotopes in cloud water sampled at the summit of the Puy de Dôme mountain (1465 m a.s.l.) increased by a factor of at least 40. During the following weeks, the concentrations decreased more slowly in cloud water than in rain and in rain compared with what was found on the aerosol phase. Cesium-134 was detectable in the aerosol phase, in rain and in cloud water for 3 months, 11 months and 18 months after the accident, respectively. These kinetics are consistent with the washout scavenging of aerosol in the lower layers of the atmosphere that leads to a relative depletion of Fukushima-labeled aerosols at ground level. Airborne particles at high altitudes, i.e. where clouds form, have a longer residence time. This finding has implications on the different time scales at which a contamination may be transferred to the ground, depending if it is transferred via dry or wet deposition. This study highlights that cloud water is a relevant type of environmental sample to attest the presence of radionuclides on a longer time scale than for the aerosol phase, provided that the metrology is able to lower usual detection limits. Rainout efficiency was computed for 137Cs.

Abstract

Transfer reactions are verified to be an important tool for the study of light unbound nuclei. We have studied the proton-rich unbound nuclei 15 F and 11 N, 10 N respectively through the 16 O( 14 N, 15 C) 15 F and 12 C( 14 N, 15 C) 11 N, 10 B( 14 N, 13 B) 11 N, 10 B( 14 N, 14 B) 10 N reactions. Resonance energies and width were obtained.

Abstract

International audience; Uranium and thorium isotopes were measured in cypress leaves, wheat grains and lettuce taken in the surroundings of the uranium conversion facility of Malvési (South of France). The comparison of activity levels and activity ratios (namely 238U/232Th and 230Th/232Th) in plants with those in aerosols taken at this site and plants taken far from it shows that aerosols emitted by the nuclear site (uranium releases in the atmosphere by stacks and 230Th-rich particles emitted from artificial ponds collecting radioactive waste mud) accounts for the high activities recorded in the plant samples close to the site. The atmospheric deposition process onto the plants appears to be the dominant process in plant contamination. Dry deposition velocities of airborne uranium and thorium were measured as 4.6×10-3 and 5.0×10-3ms-1, respectively. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd.

Abstract

The reaction cross section for the halo nucleus 6 He on hydrogen has been measured at 36 MeV/nucleon using the transmission method and a value of σ R =409±22 mb was obtained. A coherent analysis within a microscopic model of this result in conjunction with (p,p) and (p,n) angular distributions has allowed the interaction potential to be uniquely determined. This analysis also allowed the 6 He density distribution to be explored.

Abstract

A mass measurement experiment by a time of flight method with the SPEG spectrometer at GANIL has been performed to investigate the N = 20 and N = 28 shell closures far from stability. The masses of 31 neutron-rich nuclei in the range A = 29–47 have been measured. The precision of 19 masses has been significantly improved and 12 masses were measured for the first time. The neutron-rich Cl, S and P isotopes are seen to exhibit a change in shell structure around N = 28. Comparison with shell model and relativistic mean field calculations demonstrate that the observed effects arise from deformed prolate ground state configurations associated with shape coexistence. The evidence of an isomeric state in the 43S and its interpretation by a shell model calculation confirm the analysis of the masses and constitutes the first evidence of the predicted shape coexistence around N = 28.

Abstract

The ground state of the proton-rich, unbound nucleus ${}^{11}\mathrm{N}$ was observed, together with six excited states using the multinucleon transfer reaction ${}^{10}\mathrm{B}{(}^{14}\mathrm{N}{,}^{13}\mathrm{B}{)}^{11}\mathrm{N}$ at $30A$ MeV incident energy at Grand Acc\'el\'erateur National d'Ions Lourds. Levels of ${}^{11}\mathrm{N}$ are observed as well defined resonances in the spectrum of the ${}^{13}\mathrm{B}$ ejectiles. They are localized at 1.63(5), 2.16(5), 3.06(8), 3.61(5), 4.33(5), 5.98(10), and 6.54(10) MeV above the ${}^{10}\mathrm{C}+p$ threshold. The ground-state resonance has a mass excess of 24.618(50) MeV; the experimental width is smaller than theoretical predictions.

Abstract

The p(11Be,10Be)d reaction has been studied using a radioactive 11Be beam of 35.3 MeV/nucleon. Differential cross sections have been compared with Distorted Wave Born Approximation calculations, using bound state form factors determined by solving the particle-vibration coupling equations. Calculated cross sections corresponding to a 16% core excitation admixture in the 11Begs wave function are in good agreement with the present data.

Abstract

Magnetoresistive materials are widely used for read-heads and are very good candidates for sensors due to their sensitivity. A large number of applications, at present covered by Hall sensors, can be targeted but they require having stable, reproducible, hysteresis-free and high signal-to-noise devices. This can be addressed by optimizing the material aspect (stack composition, magnetization direction) and the design. External biasing applied to giant magnetoresistance (GMR) sensors by integrated permanent magnets can be used to tailor the response and stabilize the sensor against random fields. In this paper, we present the work we have performed to tailor GMR samples to fulfill the requirements of two specific applications. In the first case we have developed very stable and reproducible current sensors with the aim of permanent magnet biasing. In the second case we show results on a single-chip 2D compass, where the Earth's field measurement is obtained by a local magnetization reversal of the hard layer. The sensitivity of this compass is 3° for a current consumption of 200 μA.

Abstract

International audience; Segregation and radioactive analysis of aerosols according to their aerodynamic size were performed in France, Austria, the Czech Republic, Poland, Germany, and Greece after the arrival of contaminated air masses following the nuclear accident at the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant in March 2011. On the whole and regardless of the location, the highest activity levels correspond either to the finest particle fraction or to the upper size class. Regarding anthropogenic radionuclides, the activity median aerodynamic diameter (AMAD) ranged between 0.25 and 0.71 μm for 137Cs, from 0.17 to 0.69 μm for 134Cs, and from 0.30 to 0.53 μm for 131I, thus in the "accumulation mode" of the ambient aerosol (0.1-1 μm). AMAD obtained for the naturally occurring radionuclides 7Be and 210Pb ranged from 0.20 to 0.53 μm and 0.29 to 0.52 μm, respectively. Regarding spatial variations, AMADs did not show large differences from place to place compared with what was observed concerning bulk airborne levels registered on the European scale. When air masses arrived in Europe, AMADs for 131I were about half those for cesium isotopes. Higher AMAD for cesium probably results from higher AMAD observed at the early stage of the accident in Japan. Lower AMAD for 131I can be explained by the adsorption of gaseous iodine on particles of all sizes met during transport, especially for small particles. Additionally, weathering conditions (rain) encountered during transport and in Europe in March and April contributed to the equilibrium of the gaseous to total 131I ratio. AMAD slightly increased with time for 131I whereas a clear decreasing trend was observed with the AMADs for 137Cs and 134Cs. On average, the associated geometric standard deviation (GSD) appeared to be higher for iodine than for cesium isotopes. These statements also bear out a gaseous 131I transfer on ambient particles of a broad size range during transport. Highest weighted activity levels were found on the 0.49-0.95 μm and on the 0.18-0.36 μm size ranges in France and in Poland, respectively. The contribution from resuspension of old deposited 137Cs was assessed for the coarse particle fractions only for the first sampling week. © 2013 American Chemical Society.

Abstract

International audience; The nuclear accident of Fukushima Dai-ichi (Japan) which occurred after the tsunami that impacted the northeast coasts of Japan on March 11th, 2011 led to significant releases of radionuclides into the atmosphere and resulted in the detection of those radionuclides at a global scale. In order to track airborne radionuclides from the damaged reactors and to survey their potential impact on the French territory, the French Institute of Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety (Institut de Radioprotection et de Sureté Nucléaire IRSN) set up an enhanced surveillance system to give quick results as needed and later give quality trace level measurements. Radionuclides usually measured at trace levels such as 137Cs and in a very sporadic way 131I were reported. Radionuclides that we had never measured in air since the Chernobyl accident 134Cs, 136Cs, the mother/daughter pairs 129mTe-129Te and 132Te-132I, and 140La (from the mother-daughter pair 140Ba- 140La) were also reported. Except the 131I/137Cs ratio, activity concentration ratios were constant. These ratios could be used to help source term assessment, or as data for transfer studies realized after the passage of contaminated air masses, typically using the 134Cs/137Cs ratio. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd.

Abstract

Long term time series acquired in the frame of radioecological monitoring programmes are useful tools for exploring the variability of naturally occurring radionuclide contents. The data set was established in order to investigate the role of discharge, flood type and flood chronicles on such variability within the suspended sediments. Preliminary results show that radionuclide geochemical properties as well as suspended sediment nature and particle residence time may in some particular cases significantly affect the U-Th series nuclide equilibrium. © 2013 WIT Press.

Abstract

Radioactive emissions into the atmosphere from the damaged reactors of the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant (NPP) started on March 12th, 2011. Among the various radionuclides released, iodine-131 ( 131I) and cesium isotopes ( 137Cs and 134Cs) were transported across the Pacific toward the North American continent and reached Europe despite dispersion and washout along the route of the contaminated air masses. In Europe, the first signs of the releases were detected 7 days later while the first peak of activity level was observed between March 28th and March 30th. Time variations over a 20-day period and spatial variations across more than 150 sampling locations in Europe made it possible to characterize the contaminated air masses. After the Chernobyl accident, only a few measurements of the gaseous 131I fraction were conducted compared to the number of measurements for the particulate fraction. Several studies had already pointed out the importance of the gaseous 131I and the large underestimation of the total 131I airborne activity level, and subsequent calculations of inhalation dose, if neglected. The measurements made across Europe following the releases from the Fukushima NPP reactors have provided a significant amount of new data on the ratio of the gaseous 131I fraction to total 131I, both on a spatial scale and its temporal variation. It can be pointed out that during the Fukushima event, the 134Cs to 137Cs ratio proved to be different from that observed after the Chernobyl accident. The data set provided in this paper is the most comprehensive survey of the main relevant airborne radionuclides from the Fukushima reactors, measured across Europe. A rough estimate of the total 131I inventory that has passed over Europe during this period was \textless1% of the released amount. According to the measurements, airborne activity levels remain of no concern for public health in Europe. © 2011 American Chemical Society.

Abstract

LISA, the first space project for detecting gravitational waves, relies on two main technical challenges: the free falling masses and an outstanding precision on phase shift measurements (a few pm on 5 Mkm in the LISA band). The technology of the free falling masses, i.e. their isolation to forces other than gravity and the capability for the spacecraft to precisely follow the test masses, will soon be tested with the technological LISA Pathfinder mission. The performance of the phase measurement will be achieved by at least two stabilization stages: a pre-stabilisation of the laser frequency at a level of 10 -13 (relative frequency stability) will be further improved by using numerical algorithms, such as Time Delay Interferometry, which have been theoretically and numerically demonstrated to reach the required performance level (10 -21 ). Nevertheless, these algorithms, though already tested with numerical model of LISA, require experimental validation, including ‘realistic’ hardware elements. Such an experiment would allow to evaluate the expected noise level and the possible interactions between subsystems. To this end, the APC is currently developing an optical benchtop experiment, called LISA On Table (LOT), which is representative of the three LISA spacecraft. A first module of the LOT experiment has been mounted and is being characterized. After completion this facility may be used by the LISA community to test hardware (photodiodes, phasemeters) or software (reconstruction algorithms) components.

Abstract

We have developed a 532 nm iodine stabilized laser system that may be suitable for the LISA mission (Laser Interferometer Space Antenna) or other future spaceborne missions. This system is based on an externally frequency-doubled Nd:YAG laser source and uses the molecular transfer spectroscopy technique for the frequency stabilization. This technique has been optimized for LISA: compactness (less than $1.1\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}1.1\text{ }\text{ }{\mathrm{m}}^{2}$), vacuum compatibility, ease of use and initialization, minimization of the number of active components (acousto-optic modulators are both used for frequency shifting and phase modulating the pump beam). By locking on the ${a}_{10}$ hyperfine component of the R(56)32-0 transition, we find an Allan standard deviation ($\ensuremath{\sigma}$) of $3\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}14}$ at 1 s and $\ensuremath{\sigma}l2\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}14}$ for $20\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{s}\ensuremath{\le}\ensuremath{\tau}\ensuremath{\le}{10}^{3}\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{s}$. In terms of linear spectral density, this roughly corresponds to a stability better than $30\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{Hz}/\sqrt{\mathrm{Hz}}$ between ${10}^{\ensuremath{-}2}$ and 1 Hz with a stability decrease close to $1/f$ below 10 mHz.

Abstract

International audience; The study of the gravitational waves opens a new window for the observation of the universe. Completing the observations obtained from electro-magnetic waves, neutrinos and cosmic rays, the gravitational waves will provide informations on the most violent phenomena in the universe, as supernova explosions, collisions of binary systems or mergers of black holes. Their study will thus increase our knowledge in astrophysics, but also in cosmology and fundamental physics. This paper will make a short presentation of the future space interferometer LISA, aiming at detecting gravitational waves, and presents an overview of the R&D developments for LISA at the APC laboratory.

Abstract

We have performed the Be reaction in inverse kinematics. The were detected in the SPEG spectrometer and the deuterons detected in a silicon array in coincidence. The yield to the first excited state of is greater than that to the ground state, and increases with angle. Strong population of the two-alpha plus two-neutron states near 6 MeV (in the two-centre shell-model description) is observed. The ultimate goal is to study the microscopic structure of from the extracted spectroscopic factors.

Abstract

The Monte-Carlo code PENELOPE for Ionisation Chamber Simulation Method has been applied for the calculation of ionisation-chamber (IC) calibration factors. Measuring only a few radionuclides well selected within the relevant energy range, and determining an adjustable parameter, commonly used radionuclides can be measured without any specific calibration. The simulation revealed a discontinuity in the IC response as a function of photon energy and its dependence on the chemical composition of the radioactive solution.

Abstract

For the first time evidence of the ground state of the proton-rich, unbound nucleus ${}^{10}\mathrm{N}$ has been found in the multinucleon transfer reaction ${}^{10}\mathrm{B}{(}^{14}\mathrm{N}{,}^{14}\mathrm{B}{)}^{10}\mathrm{N}.$ The observed resonance of ${}^{10}\mathrm{N}$ has a mass excess of 38.8(4) MeV and a width of $\ensuremath{\Gamma}=2.3(16) \mathrm{MeV},$ close to the Audi-Wapstra estimation of 38.5(4) MeV. ${}^{10}\mathrm{N}$ is the last missing $A=10$ multiplet partner.

Proton reaction cross-section measurements on various stable and neutron-rich nuclei (He-4,He-6, Li7-9, Be9-11, F21-24, N22-26, Na25-29 and Mg29-32) were performed via the attenuation method at intermediate energies (similar to 35-75 A MeV) and using a cryogenic hydrogen target. Abstract

The reaction cross section for the halo nucleus He-6 on hydrogen has been measured at 36 MeV/nucleon using the transmission method and a value of sigma (R) = 409 +/- 22 mb was: obtained. A coherent analysis within a microscopic model of this result in conjunction with (p, p) and (p, n) angular distributions has allowed the interaction potential to be uniquely determined. Abstract

We present a review of experimental studies on the properties of extremely neutron-rich nuclei (Z = 6-20, A = 20-60) near the neutron drip line. Recent data on mass measurements of neutron-rich nuclei at, GANIL, (Caen, France) and some characteristics of binding energies in this region are discussed. Being sensitive to the existence of nuclear shells separation energies S-2n together with the evidence of particle instability of doubly magic nuclei He-10 and O-28 could provide information on changes in shell closures. Particularly opening of an N = 16 shell and vanishing of the N = 20 shell for very neutron-rich isotopes is under discussion. Decay studies of these hardly accessible short-lived neutron-rich nuclei from oxygen to silicon using the in-beam gamma -ray spectroscopy are also reported.

Abstract

A systematic study of elastic proton and neutron scattering as well as (p,n) charge exchange reactions was undertaken in the context of the JLM microscopic framework in order to test the isovector part of the potential. The study included the stable nuclei Ca-48, Zr-90, Sn-120 and Pb-208 in the energy range of similar to 25-45 MeV and the halo nucleus He-6 at similar to 40 MeV. It was found that the stable nuclei data can be reproduced, by an adjustment of the isovector part through a renormalization factor, lambda (isov) similar to2-2.5. Abstract

Glauber theory in the optical limit is used in a global analysis of proton-nucleus reaction cross sections. A large body of data with target mass $9l~Al~238$ and energies $6l~El~800$ MeV has been analyzed. A good description is obtained in the entire range of mass and energy. The extracted rms radii are consistent with the corresponding values from high energy electron scattering and muonic atom x-ray measurements, as well as with relativistic mean field calculations.

Abstract

The study of exotic nuclei is of great interest and has been particularly developed for severalyears thanks to the improvement of the intensities and optical qualities of the secondary exoticbeams. In this context, an experiment of reaction cross sections measurement of exotic nucleion protons was undertaken at GANIL.During this experiment, the proton-nucleus reaction cross sections have been measured, forthe first time around 50 MeV per nucleon, for several light neutron-rich nuclei (He->Mg) on aliquid hydrogen target built especially for this experiment.The reaction cross sections are fundamental data and also allow to check the validity oftheoretical models. Our experimental reaction cross section have thus allowed to concludethat Kox's parameterisation can not be applied to the nuclei far from stability and that thephenomenological potential CH89 is not appropriate to describe the nuclei with mass AMg) sur une cible d'hydrogène liquide construite pour les besoins del'expérience.Les sections efficaces de réaction sont des données fondamentales et permettent également devérifier la validité de modèles théoriques. Abstract

The paper presents a review of experimental results obtained at GANIL and FLNR Dubna on the study of the particle stability of neutron-rich nuclei near the neutron drip line. Very recent data on mass measurements of neutron-rich nuclei in the range A =29–47 at GANIL and some characteristics of binding energies in this region are presented. Nuclear binding energies are very sensitive to the existence of shells and provide clear signatures of shell closures. Experiments have been mostly performed in cooperation GANIL–Orsay–Dubna–Řež–Bucharest–Liverpool.

Abstract

The masses of 31 neutron-rich nuclei in the range A = 29-47 have been measured. The precision of 19 masses has been significantly improved and 12 masses were measured for the first time. The neutron-rich Cl, S, and P isotopes are seen to exhibit a change in shell structure around N = 28. Comparison with shell model and relativistic mean field calculations demonstrate that the observed effects arise from deformed prolate ground state configurations associated with shape coexistence. Evidence for shape coexistence is provided by the observation of an isomer in 43S.
