Fragments of romances throughout Don Quixote elucidate the worldview of the eponymous hero as he reinvents himself as a knight errant. Narrating stories of conquest, loss, love, betrayal, and valor, these late medieval Spanish ballads contextualize Don Quixote's mission of correcting the injustices of an indifferent world. Cervantes also draws others into Don Quixote's imagined world by weaving romances into the speech of the innkeeper who dubs him a knight, Sancho Panza, Ginés de Pasamonte, and Altisidora. This article considers six romances that Don Quixote and these individuals cite: "Mis arreos son las armas," "Nunca fue caballero," and "El marqués de Mantua" in Part 1; and "Asentado está Gaiferos en el palacio real," "Ayer fui señor de España," and "Mira Nero de Tarpeya" in Part 2. These romances reflect Don Quixote's self-understanding as an avatar of knight errantry as well as the folly of this undertaking, while also impacting others who (un)wittingly contribute to this perspective. The analysis of these texts aims to advance the study of romances in the novel by emphasizing how they compel Don Quixote to regard his inventions as truthful and how other characters use these poems to bolster the credibility of their own worldviews. Background and Purpose: The Nursing Work Index (NWI) was developed in the 1980s to measure the nursing work environment (NWE). Instruments descended from the NWI continue to measure the NWE today. The purpose of this review was to identify instruments derived from the NWI, examine how they have been used and revised, and evaluate their ability to capture elements of the current work environment. Methods: A scoping literature review. Results: Forty articles were included. Instruments developed from the NWI have been translated into numerous languages and administered to hundreds of thousands of nurses globally. Conclusions: The study of the NWE remains extensive throughout the world. Future research should examine the factorial structure of instrument adaptions and ensure that items are relevant to contemporary nursing practice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Osteosarcoma (OS) is an aggressive mesenchymal cell tumor that carries a poor long-term prognosis. Despite definitive surgery for the primary tumor and adjuvant chemotherapy, pulmonary metastasis is common and is the primary cause of morbidity. To improve outcomes for patients, we have developed and optimized a phenotypic screen for drugs that may target OS disseminated tumor cells (DTCs) and inhibit their metastatic outbreak rather than merely screening for cytotoxic activity against proliferating cells, as is commonly conducted in conventional drug discovery approaches. We report on the validation of a previously described 3D reconstituted basement membrane extract (3D BME) model system for tumor dormancy and metastatic outgrowth adapted to clonal pairs of high and low metastatic OS cells. A post-hoc validation of the assay was possible by comparing the activity of a drug in our assay with early evidence of activity in human OS clinical trials (regorafenib and saracatinib). In this validation, we found concordance between our assay and human clinical trial experience We then explored an approved veterinary small molecule inhibitor of Janus kinase-1 (oclacitinib) as a potential drug candidate to take advantage of the high prevalence of OS in pet dogs and its translational value to humans. Despite the biological rationale, we found no evidence to support the use of oclacitinib as an antimetastatic agent in OS. The findings support our 3D BME assay as a highly efficient method to examine drugs for activity in targeting OS DTCs.

Abstract Background Conflicting results regarding the impact of repeated vaccination on influenza vaccine effectiveness (VE) may cause confusion regarding the benefits of receiving the current season’s vaccine. Methods We systematically searched MEDLINE, Embase, PubMed, and Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature from database inception to August 17, 2016, for observational studies published in English that reported VE against laboratory-confirmed influenza for four vaccination groups, namely current season only, prior season only, both seasons, and neither season. We pooled differences in VE (∆VE) between vaccination groups by influenza season and type/subtype using a random effects model. The study protocol is registered with PROSPERO (registration number: CRD42016037241). Results We identified 3435 unique articles, reviewed the full text of 634, and included 20 for meta-analysis. Compared to prior season vaccination only, vaccination in both seasons was associated with greater protection against influenza H1N1 (∆VE = 26%; 95% CI, 15% to 36%) and B (∆VE = 24%; 95% CI, 7% to 42%), but not H3N2 (∆VE = 10%; 95% CI, –6% to 25%). Compared to no vaccination for either season, individuals who received the current season’s vaccine had greater protection against H1N1 (∆VE = 61%; 95% CI, 50% to 70%), H3N2 (∆VE = 41%; 95% CI, 33% to 48%), and B (∆VE = 62%; 95% CI, 54% to 68%). We observed no differences in VE between vaccination in both seasons and the current season only for H1N1 (∆VE = 4%; 95% CI, –7% to 15%), H3N2 (∆VE = –12%; 95% CI, –27% to 4%), or B (∆VE = –8%; 95% CI, –17% to 1%). Conclusions From the patient perspective, our results support current season vaccination regardless of prior season vaccination. We found no overall evidence that prior season vaccination negatively impacts current season VE. It is important that future VE studies include vaccination history over multiple seasons in order to evaluate repeated vaccination in more detail.

Dental pulp is a highly vascularized and innervated tissue that provides sensitivity and vitality to the tooth. Chronic caries results in an infected pulp tissue prone to necrosis. Existing clinical treatments replace the living pulp tissue with a non-responsive resin filling resulting in loss of tooth vitality. Tissue engineering approaches to dental pulp tissue regeneration have been investigated to preserve tooth vitality and function. However, a critical criterion is the choice of growth factors that may promote mesenchymal stem cell differentiation and more importantly, vascularization. But, the problems associated with growth factor dosage, delivery, safety, immunological and ectopic complications affect their translatory potential severely. The purpose of this study is to develop, characterize and evaluate a biomimetic native extracellular matrix (ECM) derived dual ECM scaffold that consists of a pulp-specific ECM to promote MSC attachment, proliferation and differentiation and an endothelial ECM to promote migration of host endothelial cells and eventual vascularization in vivo. Our results show that the dual ECM scaffolds possess similar properties as a pulp-ECM scaffold to promote MSC attachment and odontogenic differentiation in vitro. Additionally, when implanted subcutaneously in a tooth root slice model in vivo, the dual ECM scaffolds promoted robust odontogenic differentiation of both dental pulp and bone marrow derived MSCs and also extensive vascularization when compared to respective controls. These scaffolds are mass producible for clinical use and hence have the potential to replace root canal therapy as a treatment for chronic dental caries.
