This study evaluated the stability and reusability of amino-functionalized nanocellulose aerogels as CO2-adsorbent materials. The modified aerogels, synthesized via a controlled silylation using N-[3-(trimethoxysilyl) propyl] ethylenediamine (DAMO), demonstrated excellent thermal stability up to 250 °C (TGA) and efficient CO2 adsorption through chemisorption, which was the main adsorption mechanism. The performance of the aerogels was assessed using both adsorption isotherms and the decay pressure technique, revealing that CO2 adsorption capacity increased with higher amino group loading (4.62, 9.24, and 13.87 mmol of DAMO). At 298 K and 4 bar, CO2 adsorption capacity increased proportionally with the amino group concentration, reaching values of 3.17, 5.98, and 7.86 mmol of CO2 g−1 polymer, respectively. Furthermore, over 20 adsorption/desorption cycles, the aerogels maintained 95% CO2 desorption at ambient temperature, indicating their potential for industrial use. Calculation of failure probabilities and probability sensitivities are very relevant problems in structural reliability. Two of the most widespread methods for estimating such quantities are the First-Order Reliability Method (FORM) and Importance Sampling using design points (IS). This work explores how to employ both approaches in a synergistic way within the framework of Control Variates with Splitting. The results obtained indicate that such a strategy allows obtaining improved estimates of the failure probability and its sensitivity without incurring into additional system analyses. Studies on the education-work transition have traditionally focused on the ways in which young people mobilize their capital and adapt to the conditions offered by distinct workplaces. However, it is also important to consider the impact of work and working life on the transformation of the subjectivities and social relations of new generations in the places where they begin their professional experience. This article analyzes this issue based on professional internships in secondary technical education in Chile. Institutional intermediation mechanisms and the agents that participate in their implementation play a significant role in the education-work transition, but, paradoxically, there is little research on these actors, on the processes and on almost everything related to their achievements and weaknesses. This topic is explored through a qualitative approach in a sample of technical-professional educational establishments in Santiago, Chile. Based on semi-structured interviews with teachers and graduates, the main mechanisms of management of the professional internships are described. It is concluded that, although the conditions of implementation are open to criticism, there is a high valuation of these internships as an induction into the world of work, especially because of the social learning that such experiences entail. Cold allodynia is a debilitating symptom of orofacial neuropathic pain resulting from trigeminal nerve damage. The molecular and neural bases of this sensory alteration are still poorly understood. Here, using chronic constriction injury (CCI) of the infraorbital nerve (IoN) (IoN-CCI) in mice, combined with behavioral analysis, Ca2+ imaging and patch-clamp recordings of retrogradely labeled IoN neurons in culture, immunohistochemistry, and adeno-associated viral (AAV) vector-based delivery in vivo , we explored the mechanisms underlying the altered orofacial cold sensitivity resulting from axonal damage in this trigeminal branch. We found that cold allodynia induced by IoN-CCI is linked to an increase in the proportion of cold-sensitive neurons (CSNs) contributing to this branch and a shift in their thermal thresholds to higher temperatures. These changes are correlated to a reduction of the Kv1.1-1.2-dependent brake potassium current IKD in IoN CSNs and a rise in the percentage of trigeminal neurons expressing TRPM8. The analysis of the electrophysiological properties of CSNs contributing to the IoN suggests that painful cold hypersensitivity involves the recruitment of silent nociceptive afferents that become sensitive to mild cold in response to nerve damage. Notably, pharmacological suppression of TRPM8 channels and AAV-based transduction of trigeminal neurons with the Kv1.1 channel in vivo effectively reverted the nociceptive phenotype in injured animals. Altogether, our results unveil a crucial role of TRPM8 and Kv1 channels in orofacial cold allodynia, suggesting that both the specific TRPM8-blocking and the AAV-driven expression of potassium channels underlying IKD in trigeminal neurons can be effective tools to revert this damage-triggered sensory alteration. Background Rapid antiretroviral therapy (ART) initiation, in which individuals with HIV start treatment within days of diagnosis, is a key component of the United States (US) Ending the HIV Epidemic initiative. The Memphis Metropolitan Statistical Area ranks second in the US for HIV incidence, yet only ∼60% of individuals link to treatment within 1 month of diagnosis. This study aimed to identify barriers and strategies for implementing rapid ART initiation in Memphis. Methods From August to December 2022, we conducted process mapping guided by the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research to outline the steps from 3 HIV testing sites to ART prescription at 3 Ryan White-funded clinics in Memphis, Tennessee. We used modified conjoint analyses to prioritize barriers and identify strategies for improving rapid ART implementation, focusing on the importance and feasibility of changes. Findings Prioritized barriers included intersectional stigma and a lack of access to centralized information about the rapid ART program, branding and logo development, inter- and intra-organizational networking and communication, testing and treatment resources (HIV testing kits and ART starter packs), rapid ART knowledge, and organizational champions. Strategies to address these barriers were compiled into a local rapid ART toolkit. Conclusions We identified modifiable systemic barriers to rapid ART initiation in Memphis, a community disproportionately affected by HIV. The strategies developed to address these barriers informed the creation of a locally relevant rapid ART toolkit for future evaluation. Anaerobic digestion plays a crucial role in the transition toward a circular economy. Incorporating system supervision through mathematical modelling can enhance control and resilience. This study aims to assess the impact of scheduled digester maintenance on the effectiveness of modelling as a tool for monitoring and control. Data from a pilot-scale plug-flow digester were analyzed using an adapted ADM1 model. The maintenance involved halting the digester and removing sedimented solids. Model calibration indicated solid retention in the first two zones of the reactor, while the hydrolysis coefficient and biogas potential remained at 0.122 d−1 and 100.4 mL CH4/gVS, respectively. The average biogas production decreased from 156 to 109 mL/gVS pre- and post-maintenance. Simulations showed a decline in the model's predictive accuracy after maintenance. To improve model fit, the initial conditions, solids retention, and kinetic parameters were adjusted. Optimal performance was achieved with khyd at 0.045 d−1 and B0 at 52.28 mL gVS−1, revealing an issue with the digester's heating system. In conclusion, maintenance can significantly alter digester conditions, requiring model recalibration to maintain its effectiveness as a digital copilot for process supervision. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
