109. Psychometric Properties of the Academic Procrastination Scale in Spanish University Students

Abstract

Procrastination in academic activities is common amongst university students, and has negative consequences for their personal as well as academic development. As a result, there is a need for valid -- yet at the same time brief and clear-cut -- measurement tools that enable the specific procrastinating behaviour of university students to be measured. This work explores in depth the psychometric properties of the Spanish version of the Academic Procrastination Scale, a widely used brief tool in secondary and higher education in the Spanish speaking world. The scale was applied to a total of 1734 university students, together with the Procrastination Assessment Scale-Students (PASS), the Unintentional Procrastination Scale (UPS) and the Active Procrastination Scale (APS). Factor analyses indicate the best fit is a structure involving four interrelated factors (task aversion, poor time management, low emotional and motivational self-control, and risk assumption) compared to other proposed models. The model presents factorial invariance between men and women, and adequate convergent validity. We discuss the implications of using this scale in higher education, since differentiating the four factors might help to identify different support measures depending on university student needs.

Abstract

The Crab pulsar and the surrounding nebula powered by the pulsar's rotational energy through the formation and termination of a relativistic electron-positron wind is a bright source of gamma-rays carrying crucial information about this complex conglomerate. We report the detection of $\gamma$-rays with a spectrum showing gradual steepening over three energy decades, from $5\times 10^{-4}$ to $1.1$ petaelectronvolt (PeV). The ultra-high-energy photons exhibit the presence of a PeV electron accelerator (a pevatron) with an acceleration rate exceeding 15% of the absolute theoretical limit. Assuming that unpulsed $\gamma$-rays are produced at the termination of the pulsar's wind, we constrain the pevatron's size, between $0.025$ and $0.1$ pc, and the magnetic field $\approx 110 \mu$G. The production rate of PeV electrons, $2.5 \times 10^{36}$ erg $\rm s^{-1}$, constitutes 0.5% of the pulsar's spin-down luminosity, although we do not exclude a non-negligible contribution of PeV protons to the production of the highest energy $\gamma$-rays., Comment: 43 pages, 13 figures, 2 tables; Published in Science

Abstract

Core-collapse supernovae (CCSN) are a prime source of gravitational waves. Estimations of their typical frequencies make them perfect targets for the current network of advanced, ground-based detectors. A successful detection could potentially reveal the underlying explosion mechanism through the analysis of the waveform. This has been illustrated using the SupernovaModel Evidence Extractor (SMEE; Logue et al. (2012)), an algorithm based on principal-component analysis and Bayesian model selection. Here, we present a complementary approach to SMEE based on (supervised) dictionary-learning and show that it is able to reconstruct and classify CCSN signals according to their morphology. Our waveform signals are obtained from (a) two publicly available catalogs built from numerical simulations of neutrino-driven (Mur) and magneto-rotational (Dim) CCSN explosions and (b) from a third 'mock' catalog of simulated sine-Gaussian (SG) waveforms. Those signals are injected into coloured Gaussian noise to simulate the background noise of Advanced LIGO in its broadband configuration and scaled to a freely-specifiable signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). We show that our approach correctly classifies signals from all three dictionaries. In particular, for SNR=15-20, we obtain perfect matches for both Dim and SG signals and about 85% true classifications for Mur signals. These results are comparable to those reported by SMEE for the same CCSN signals when those are injected in only one LIGO detector. We discuss the main limitations of our approach as well as possible improvements.

Abstract

The twist angle in transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) heterobilayers is a compelling degree of freedom that determines electron correlations and the period of lateral confinement of moir\'e excitons. Here we perform polarization-resolved second harmonic generation (SHG) spectroscopy of MoS2/WSe2 heterostructures. We demonstrate that by choosing suitable laser energies the twist angle between two monolayers can be measured directly on the assembled heterostructure. We show that the amplitude and polarization of the SHG signal from the heterostructure are determined by the twist angle between the layers and exciton resonances at the SH energy. Abstract

Quantum materials harbor a cornucopia of exotic transport phenomena challenging our understanding of condensed matter. Among these, a giant, non-saturating linearmagnetoresistance (MR) has been reported in various systems, from Weyl semi-metals to topological insulators. Its origin is often ascribed to unusual band structure effects but it may also be caused by extrinsic sample disorder. Here, we report a very large linear MR in a SrTiO$_3$ two-dimensional electron gas and, by combining transport measurements with electron spectro-microscopy, show that it is caused by nanoscale inhomogeneities that are self-organized during sample growth. Our data also reveal semi-classical Sondheimer oscillations arising from interferences between helicoidal electron trajectories, from which we determine the 2DEG thickness. Our results bring insight into the origin of linear MR in quantum materials, expand the range of functionalities of oxide 2DEGs and suggest exciting routes to explore the interaction of linear MR with features like Rashba spin-orbit coupling.

Abstract

Oxide interfaces exhibit a broad range of physical effects stemming from broken inversion symmetry. In particular, they can display non-reciprocal phenomena when time reversal symmetry is also broken, e.g., by the application of a magnetic field. Examples include the direct and inverse Edelstein effects (DEE, IEE) that allow the interconversion between spin currents and charge currents. The DEE and IEE have been investigated in interfaces based on the perovskite SrTiO$_3$ (STO), albeit in separate studies focusing on one or the other. The demonstration of these effects remains mostly elusive in other oxide interface systems despite their blossoming in the last decade. Here, we report the observation of both the DEE and IEE in a new interfacial two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) based on the perovskite oxide KTaO$_3$. We generate 2DEGs by the simple deposition of Al metal onto KTaO$_3$ single crystals, characterize them by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and magnetotransport, and demonstrate the DEE through unidirectional magnetoresistance and the IEE by spin-pumping experiments. We compare the spin-charge interconversion efficiency with that of STO-based interfaces, relate it to the 2DEG electronic structure, and give perspectives for the implementation of KTaO$_3$ 2DEGs into spin-orbitronic devices.

Abstract

Academic advances of AI models in high-precision domains, like healthcare, need to be made explainable in order to enhance real-world adoption. Our past studies and ongoing interactions indicate that medical experts can use AI systems with greater trust if there are ways to connect the model inferences about patients to explanations that are tied back to the context of use. Specifically, risk prediction is a complex problem of diagnostic and interventional importance to clinicians wherein they consult different sources to make decisions. To enable the adoption of the ever improving AI risk prediction models in practice, we have begun to explore techniques to contextualize such models along three dimensions of interest: the patients' clinical state, AI predictions about their risk of complications, and algorithmic explanations supporting the predictions. We validate the importance of these dimensions by implementing a proof-of-concept (POC) in type-2 diabetes (T2DM) use case where we assess the risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD) - a common T2DM comorbidity. Within the POC, we include risk prediction models for CKD, post-hoc explainers of the predictions, and other natural-language modules which operationalize domain knowledge and CPGs to provide context. With primary care physicians (PCP) as our end-users, we present our initial results and clinician feedback in this paper. Abstract

Photoinduced hyperthermia is a cancer therapy technique that induces death to cancerous cells via heat generated by plasmonic nanoparticles. While previous studies have shown that some nanoparticles can be effective at killing cancer cells under certain conditions, there is still a necessity (or the need) to improve its heating efficiency. In this work, we perform a detailed thermoplasmonic study comparing the most effective nanoparticle geometries up to now with a doughnut-shaped nanoparticle, demonstrating that the latter exhibits a superior tunable photothermal response in practical illumination conditions, i.e., unpolarized light. Furthermore, we show that nanoparticle heating in fluidic environments, i.e., nanoparticles undergoing Brownian rotations, strongly depends on the particle orientation with respect to the illumination source. We conclude that the heating performance of nanodoughnuts is outstanding, with a temperature increment 35% higher than the second best nanoheater (nanodisks). Furthermore, nanodoughnuts feature a weak dependence on orientation, being therefore, ideal candidates for photothermal therapy applications. Finally, we present a designing guide, covering a wide range of toroid designs, which can help on its experimental implementation.

Abstract

Using a setup for testing a prototype for a satellite-borne cosmic-ray ion detector, we have operated a stack of scintillator and silicon detectors on top of the Princess Sirindhorn Neutron Monitor (PSNM), an NM64 detector at 2560-m altitude at Doi Inthanon, Thailand (18.59 N, 98.49 E). Monte Carlo simulations have indicated that about 15% of the neutron counts by PSNM are due to interactions (mostly in the lead producer) of GeV-range protons among the atmospheric secondary particles from cosmic ray showers, which can be detected by the scintillator and silicon detectors. Those detectors can provide a timing trigger for measurement of the propagation time distribution of such neutrons as they scatter and propagate through the NM64, processes that are similar whether the interaction was initiated by an energetic proton (for 15% of the count rate) or neutron (for 80% of the count rate). This propagation time distribution underlies the time delay distribution between successive neutron counts, from which we can determine the leader fraction (inverse multiplicity), which has been used to monitor Galactic cosmic ray spectral variations over $\sim$1-40 GV. Here we have measured and characterized the propagation time distribution from both the experimental setup and Monte Carlo simulations of atmospheric secondary particle detection. We confirm a known propagation time distribution with a peak (at $\approx$70 microseconds) and tail over a few ms, dominated by neutron counts. We fit this distribution using an analytic model of neutron diffusion and absorption, for both experimental and Monte Carlo results. In addition we identify a group of prompt neutron monitor pulses that arrive within 20 microseconds of the charged-particle trigger, of which a substantial fraction can be attributed to charged-particle ionization in a proportional counter, according to both experimental and Monte Carlo ..., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures.
