Abstract

International audience; We present first fiber Bragg grating (FBG) inscribed in polarization maintaining (PM) optical fiber with artificially anisotropic core achieved by an appropriate distribution of discrete germanium-doped areas in nanoscale. We proved that this FBG reveals unique properties. Its single-resonance spectral shape, strain and temperature sensitivities are similar to that for grating written in cylindrically symmetrical optical fiber, which indicates that it behaves as the grating fabricated in a non-PM fiber, whereas it is written in the fiber that preserves the orthogonal polarization components of the mode. Moreover, due to the relatively low birefringence of the fiber, the FBG is insensitive to the excited polarization state and twist, and only a negligible shift of the spectrum is noticeable with no changes in its shape. Thus, FBG inscribed in ZEBRA fiber is a kind of hybrid structure that can be used for all-fiber lasers that generate polarized wave, as well as for polarization fiber sensors and components with spectral insensitivity to random or intentional twist.

Abstract

In this paper, we statistically analyze the density of each chess piece in four square concentric frames for different skill levels (according to the Elo ranking system), phases (opening, middlegame and endgame) and outcomes. The results indicate a tendency for pawns, knights and bishops to move towards the central areas, particularly during the opening phase. Additionally, we identified intrinsic entropy patterns for each piece throughout the entire game, independent of player skill level. Magazine Expansión publishes yearly its list of leading 500 top companies in Mexico. Its cumulative probability sales distribution per employee (per capita) exhibits a two-class structure: a quasi-Pareto power-law in the higher part and an exponential in the lower part which is qualitatively similar to income and wealth distributions in many countries of the world. Therefore, we posit that the income in wages and salaries of many Mexican workers is correlated to the sales revenue per employee of their corresponding employer firms. Abstract

In this paper we experimentally show parametric amplification and wavelength conversion in a custom manufactured dual-core highly nonlinear fiber. On-off gain > 10 dB and conversion efficiencies between −1 and −8.5 dB were measured for both cores. The estimated effective nonlinear parameter for the cores of the fiber are 6.6 W−1.km−1 and 6.3 W−1.km−1, while the zero-dispersion wavelength for the individual cores is shown to be relatively close from each other. Furthermore, complementary analytical and numerical results show that coupled cores fiber optical parametric amplifier offer the potential of wide-band gain even when they have significantly distinct zero-dispersion wavelengths.

Abstract

Bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome (BOS), the main manifestation of chronic lung allograft dysfunction, leads to poor long-term survival after lung transplantation. Identifying predictors of BOS is essential to prevent the progression of dysfunction before irreversible damage occurs. By using a large set of 107 samples from lung recipients, we performed microarray gene expression profiling of whole blood to identify early biomarkers of BOS, including samples from 49 patients with stable function for at least 3 years, 32 samples collected at least 6 months before BOS diagnosis (prediction group), and 26 samples at or after BOS diagnosis (diagnosis group). An independent set from 25 lung recipients was used for validation by quantitative PCR (13 stables, 11 in the prediction group, and 8 in the diagnosis group). We identified 50 transcripts differentially expressed between stable and BOS recipients. Three genes, namely POU class 2 associating factor 1 (POU2AF1), T-cell leukemia/lymphoma protein 1A (TCL1A), and B cell lymphocyte kinase, were validated as predictive biomarkers of BOS more than 6 months before diagnosis, with areas under the curve of 0.83, 0.77, and 0.78 respectively. Abstract

We experimentally and numerically investigate the dynamics of a fiber ring cavity in which two different instability can be excited: gain-through-filtering and parametric instability. We demonstrate that they can be triggered individually or collectively depending on the two main control parameters offered by the cavity, namely the pump power and the cavity detuning. The experimental observations are in good agreement with numerical simulations.

In this thesis, we study the general dynamics of two coupled fiber Kerr resonators in different configurations. These are systems composed of two coupled individual parts. We go through a first theoretical and numerical study of the two coupled cavities in a passive-passive configuration. We also undergo a numerical and experimental study of self-pulsing dynamics in two coupled Kerr cavities. This is followed by a purely theoretical study of the excitability of the system near a homoclinic bifurcation. Abstract

We report the generation of an optical frequency comb featuring a 28 THz bandwidth, sustained by a single 80 fs cavity soliton recirculating in a fiber Fabry–Pérot resonator. This large spectrum is comparable to frequency combs obtained with microresonators operating in the anomalous dispersion regime. Thanks to the compact design and the easy coupling of the resonator, cavity solitons can be generated in an all-fiber experimental setup with a continuous wave pumping scheme. We also observe the generation of a dispersive wave at higher frequencies, which is supported by higher-order dispersion. These observations align remarkably well with both numerical simulations and the established theory of cavity solitons. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Targeted medical therapy and balloon pulmonary angioplasty (BPA) entered the field of chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) treatment in the early 2010’s. Multimodal therapy is emerging as the new gold standard for CTEPH management. Whether this change of paradigm impacted early outcomes of pulmonary endarterectomy (PEA) remains unknown. Our aim is to report our surgical experience in the era of CTEPH multimodal management. METHODS: Patients who underwent PEA between 2016 and 2020 were included in the study. Early outcomes were described and compared between three groups of patients: PEA alone, PEA after targeted medical therapy induction and PEA after BPA. RESULTS: A total of 418 patients, 225 males and 193 females, with a mean age of 59±14 years were included in the study. 336 patients underwent PEA alone, 69 after medical targeted therapy induction and 13 after unilateral BPA. Baseline preoperative pulmonary vascular resistance [4.99 (IQR, 1.71–8.48), 6.21 (IQR, 4.37–8.1), 5.03 (IQR, 4.44–7.19) wood units (WU), P=0.230, respectively] and PEA effectiveness [% decrease mean pulmonary artery pressure (mPAP), 24 (IQR, 7–42), 25 (IQR, 7–35), 23 (IQR, 3–29), P=0.580] did not differ between groups. Compared to PEA alone and PEA+BPA, the medical therapy induction group represented the most challenging group with higher baseline mPAP (45±10 vs. 42±11 and 43±11 mmHg, P=0.047), longer circulatory arrest time (30.1±15 vs. 26.6±10 and 19.6±6 min, P=0.005), higher post-PEA extracorporeal membrane oxygenation use (20.6% vs. 8.7 and 9.1%, P=0.004), higher duration on mechanical ventilation [4 (IQR, 1–12) vs. 1 (IQR, 0.5–5) and 2 (IQR, 1–3) days, P=0.005], higher complication rate (85.5% vs. 74.6% and 76.9%, P=0.052) and higher 90-day mortality (13% vs. 3.9% and 0%, P=0.002). Compared to PEA and PEA+ medical therapy induction groups, patients in the BPA induction group were older [72 (IQR, 62–76) vs. 60 (IQR, 48–69) and 62 (IQR, 52–72) years, P=0.005], and underwent shorter cardiopulmonary bypass (191.9±47.9 vs. 222±107.2 and 236.8±46.4 min, P

Abstract

Obesity is a chronic, multifactorial disease with increasing worldwide prevalence. It is characterized by excessive adipose tissue accumulation in the body, which decreases the patient’s life expectancy and has been associated with a higher incidence of chronic degenerative diseases, including type 2 diabetes mellitus, systemic arterial hypertension, cancer, and cardiovascular disease. Several investigations have found that the adipose tissue of obese humans and rodents is infiltrated by a high number of macrophages. These cells interact with apoptotic adipocytes, which internalize and accumulate lipids to become foam cells. These processes lead to the release of proinflammatory mediators that promote insulin resistance. In addition, individuals with obesity have higher levels of circulating neutrophils; however, these individuals also have a higher incidence of infection, indicating that the phagocytic function of these cells is affected. This chapter describes several studies that could partly explain the phagocytic mechanisms affected by obesity. Therapeutic alternatives to favor phagocytic capacity are also discussed.

A new method of seeding X2 optical parametric converters with X3 fiber optical parametric sources is introduced. We demonstrate a tunable mid-infrared source operating at around 3 µm with the technique and discuss the potential of this architecture.
