103. Plasma progesterone levels during the estrous cycle of Holstein and Brahman cows, Carora type and cross-bred heifers

Abstract

Daily plasma progesterone (P(4)) was determined during one estrous cycle of 19 cows and 18 heifers of four different breeds: Holstein (H), Brahman (B), Carora-type (C) and crossbred (CB) females. Estrus detection was made by visual observation and using a teaser bull with a chin-ball marker. The P(4) profiles showed no differences among groups. In Group 1 (H), P(4) levels ranged from 0.5 ng/ml plasma on the day of estrus (Day 0) to 5.1 ng/ml at the luteal phase peak (Day 13). In Group 2 (B), P(4) levels ranged from 0.5 ng/ml on Day 0 to 9.2 ng/ml on Day 13. In Groups 3 (C) and 4 (CB), P(4) levels ranged from 0.5 ng/ml, on Day 0, to 13.7 ng/ml on Day 12 and 8.8 ng/ml on Day 13. These last two groups were moved to the same location and then compared. It was found that P(4) concentrations were significantly higher (P0.025) in Group 3 between Days 7 and 14 of the estrous cycle. In all groups, P(4) levels were lower than 1 ng/ml one day before the next estrus, and levels of 0.4, 0.5, 0.4 and 0.4 ng/ml were obtained the day of estrus in Groups 1 to 4, respectively. Results indicated that the pattern of P(4) for each one of the groups was similar to those reported by other investigators.

Abstract

Basal glycemic oscillations in 3 type I-diabetics treated with continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII) and without endogenous insulin secretion have been studied. Insulin infusion with different frequencies of square wave-form basal insulin delivery (1 min and 10 min) have been utilized. Aim of the present investigation was to observe whether basal blood glucose oscillations could be affected by the frequency of basal square wave-form insulin delivery. Blood glucose has been measured at 3 min intervals for 90 min for each frequency. The glycemic patterns obtained did not show any periodism in relationship with the two frequencies engaged, hence the glycemic fluctuation, similar between the two experiments, cannot be considered as dependent on the different frequency of insulin pulses.

Abstract

The authors present three patients with rectus sheath hematoma who were diagnosed with ultrasound and successfully operated upon. The importance of a correct preoperative diagnosis is stressed to avoid an unnecessary laparotomy. Ultrasound helps to localize the presence of an extra-abdominal mass located between the aponeurotic sheaths of the rectus muscle. Surgery is the best treatment since it is possible to evacuate the large hematoma, and at the same time it affords an opportunity to ligate the bleeding vessels, usually the epigastrics. No advantage is seen using conservative treatment, as several weeks may be necessary before complete resolution, while the patient is suffering considerable pain and discomfort.

Abstract

Pidotimod® is a dipeptide with widely recognized immunomodulatory properties and with particularly beneficial effects for the treatment of acute respiratory and urinary tract infections. Pidotimod® presents two chiral centres which originate four stereoisomers. (4R,2′S, 4S,2′R, 4R,2′R and 4S,2′S). To date, only the 4R,2′S and 4S,2′R stereoisomers are reported in the literature. We report here the absolute crystal structure of the 4R,2′R and 4S,2′S diastereoisomers of Pidotimod®, obtained by crystals grown by slow evaporation of a mixture of water and ethanol. The analysis of the crystal structures revealed the key role of a solvent water molecule in the crystal packing engaged in an extended hydrogen bonds network. This water-assisted H-bond network explained the recalcitrance of 4R,2′R and 4S,2′S Pidotimod® to crystallize in pure ethanol, despite their high solubility, and the growth of well-diffracting crystals only in presence of water. Hence, Pidotimod® 4R,2′R and 4S,2′S stereoisomers markedly differ from the 4R,2′S and 4S,2′R ones, which crystallize in absence of water. The molecular and crystal structures of the 4R,2′R and 4S,2′S Pidotimod® stereoisomers here presented gave some hints on the differences in bioactivity with respect to the 4R,2′S stereoisomer. In fact, beyond an expected different dispositions of hydrophilic ligands, 4R,2′R and 4S,2′S showed an incremented tendency to intermolecular H-bonds with water.

121. Dome shaped micro-laser encapsulated in a flexible film.

Abstract

In this paper, we demonstrated multimode laser emission from a dome shaped micro-scale resonator encapsulated in a flexible polymer film. The resonator with a radius of ~60 microns was made of Norland Blocking Adhesive (NBA 107) doped with a solution of rhodamine 6G and ethanol. The dome was encapsulated in a flexible polymeric film made of polydymethylsiloxane (PDMS) with a thickness of 1 mm. The micro-scale laser was optically pumped using a frequency doubled Q-switch Nd:YAG laser with pulse repetition of 10 Hz and pulse duration of 9 ns. Experiments were carried out to investigate the lasing properties of this laser structure. The pumping threshold for multimode laser emission was below 100 µJ cm−2. The average optical quality factor for all observed laser modes was of the order of 104. Using a fluence of 315.8 µJ cm−2 it was observed that the intensity of the laser emission dropped by 62% after 5 min of operation. These results showed that these solid state flexible lasers are easy to fabricate and can be integrated into novel flexible photonic devices and novel photonic sensors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Background: The number of indications for strictureplasty for Crohn’s disease has been greatly reduced since the widespread use of biologics, although the risk of intestinal failure remains. The aim of the study was to analyze the outcomes of strictureplasty and to identify risk factors for site-specific recurrence in the era of biologics. Methods: Consecutive patients treated with strictureplasty for Crohn’s disease between 2002 and 2018 were retrospectively included. Univariate analysis was carried out. Risk factors for recurrence were identified through a multilevel logistic regression analysis. Results: Two hundred sixty-six patients were included in the study (171 males, median age 39.5years, range 18–76years). The majority of the 718 strictures requiring surgery in these patients were located in the ileum (61%), treated with conventional strictureplasty (89.6%) and required an additional resection (73.7%). Median follow-up time and time to recurrence were 96months and 62.5months respectively. The site-specific recurrence rate was 12.2% at 5years and 25.7% at 10years. Smoking was associated with a higher risk of recurrence in patients with milder disease. The 10-year recurrence rate was significantly higher for strictureplasties performed in the terminal ileum (30.9%, p = 0.0019) as compared to the ileum (21.8%) and the jejunum (8.4%). Multilevel logistic regression analysis showed that postoperative exposure to biologics (OR 4.74, p 0.001), nonconventional strictureplasty (OR 3.57, p 0.008) and a strictureplasty performed on a previous anastomosis (OR 13.58, p 0.002) were associated with site-specific recurrence. Conclusions: Strictureplasty is associated with optimal long-term outcomes in the biologic era and should be performed when feasible, to reduce the risk of intestinal failure in Crohn’s disease patients.

Abstract

In this paper the analysis of time series of fractal dimension maps generated from multi-pass SAR images is dealt with. The objective is twofold: on the one hand such an analysis is addressed to assess the performance of the algorithm for the fractal dimension estimation from a single SAR image, i.e., to verify the fractal estimation efficiency on natural scenes within the multiple sensor passes. On the other hand, by exploiting the statistics evaluated starting from the fractal time series, a final fractal dimension map, including only the areas in which the fractal estimation is efficient and strongly denoised from the speckle effect, is obtained. The analysis has been performed on a Cosmo-SkyMed data-set of 42 stripmap images spanning the time period from October 2009 to December 2012, acquired over the Somma-Vesuvius volcanic complex (South Italy), which is in a quiescent stage since the last eruption occurred in 1944.

Abstract

In this paper the analysis of fractal dimension maps extracted from Cosmo-SkyMed amplitude-only SAR data is considered. The focus is on the Somma-Vesuvius volcanic complex, whose study allows to draw significant comments on the behavior of the fractal maps. In particular, the dependence of the fractal maps on geometrical and geomorphologic characteristics of the imaged surface is investigated. Preliminary results regarding the different behavior of the fractal dimension evaluated on the Gran Cono and on the Mt. Somma are presented.

Abstract

Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors reduce mortality, the development of remodeling, left ventricular (LV) dysfunction, and ischemic events, both when administered alone as long-term treatment in patients with impaired LV function and/or heart failure (HF) and as short-term treatment, early after acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and/or HF. The few data available on the use of ACE inhibitors in the elderly after AMI are conflicting. Nothing is known about the effects of ACE inhibitors in elderly postinfarction patients with preserved LV function: these patients have a remarkable medium- to long-term mortality and HF incidence after infarction. The aim of this study is to evaluate, in patients with AMI agedor =65 years, the effects of Perindopril on the combined outcome of death, hospitalization for HF, and heart remodeling, considered to be aor =8% increase in LV end-diastolic volume (LVEDV). Secondary objectives include the same factors listed in the primary end points but considered separately. In addition, safety of the drug, ventricular remodeling, and adaptation are being evaluated. A total of 1100 patients with AMI (first episode or reinfarction), agedor =65 years, and preserved or only moderately depressed LV (LV ejection fractionor =40%), are to be enrolled and randomly assigned to treatment (8 mg for 12 months of Perindopril or placebo, in double-blind conditions). Clinical assessment is performed at fixed times, and periodic evaluations of (1) ventricular shape, dimensions, and function by quantitative 2-D echocardiography, and (2) heart rate variability and arrhythmias by ambulatory electrocardiographic monitoring are anticipated. The results and conclusions will be available by 2002 year.
