Every year the horticultural sector of India faces huge quantity of food wastage due to lack of processing, value addition and post-harvest handling. Farmers Producer Company (FPC) can mitigate the loss through ensuring better value chain management. There are several horticulture based FPCs established in different parts of India. They have grown very fast and competing with agro-industries. The present study aimed to assess the performance of FPCs working in horticulture sector. The study was conducted in Maharashtra State of India by selecting three FPCs working in horticultural sector. Performance of these FPCs was assessed through Effectiveness Index developed for this study. Seven components viz. functional effectiveness, increase in income, increase in farmers share in consumers rupees, inclusiveness, sustainability of company, farmers satisfaction and empowerment were included in the index by following standard index forming protocol. Sahyadri Farms was found the best performing one among the selected FPCs, regarding effectiveness with a mean index score of 63.69 followed by Vasundhara Agro Producer Company Limited (50.20) and Junnar Taluka FPC Ltd. (41.29).

Formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, and benzaldehyde are well-known carcinogens affecting human health adversely. Thus, there is a need for efficient detection of these aldehydes. This work uses 4-aminothiophenol (4-ATP) functionalized silver nanorods (Ag NRs) to detect these three aldehydes. The detection mode includes localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). The LSPR band of 4-ATP functionalized Ag NRs shows a linear decrease in absorbance with the increase in formaldehyde and acetaldehyde concentrations. A sensitivity of 0.96 and 0.79 ΔA/mM for formaldehyde and acetaldehyde were obtained. In the case of benzaldehyde, a nearly exponential decrease in absorbance with the increase in concentrations was observed. Above 98.4 μM concentration, the absorbance diminishes completely. The LoD for formaldehyde and acetaldehyde detection using LSPR is 33.8 and 24.6 μM, respectively. The SERS studies reveal that the 4-ATP binds to Ag NRs through both –SH and –NH2 groups and facilitates the inter-particle charge transfer process. The appearance of b2 modes of vibration for 4-ATP evidences this charge transfer process. In the presence of aldehydes, the change in the band shape, relative intensities, and band position were observed primarily in b2 modes of vibration, evidencing the modulation in the charge transfer process. These remarkable changes were seen in μM concentration of aldehydes. Therefore, detection of these aldehydes with 4-ATP functionalized Ag NRs using SERS is possible in concentrations as low as ~ 1 μM.

A nation's health and economic development are inextricably and synergistically connected. Stark differences exist between wealthy and developing nations in the use of cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs). Cardiovascular disease is now the leading cause of death in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC), with a significant burden from rhythm-related diseases. As science, technology, education, and regulatory frameworks have improved, CIED recycling for exportation and reuse in LMIC has become possible and primed for widespread adoption. In our manuscript, we outline the science and regulatory pathways regarding CIED reuse. We propose a pathway to advance this technology that includes creating a task force to establish standards for CIED reuse, leveraging professional organizations in areas of need to foster the professional skills for CIED reuse, collaborating with regulatory agencies to create more efficient regulatory expectations and bring the concept to scale, and establishing a global CIED reuse registry for quality assurance and future science.

Purpose To assess the correlation between abdominal fat measured at computed tomography (CT) and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and association with clinical outcomes in patients with acute pancreatitis (AP). Methods This prospective study comprised consecutive patients with AP who underwent abdominal CT and DXA. Fat estimation was done on whole-body DXA and abdominal CT. Correlations among body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), DXA, and CT fat measurements were determined. The association between fat measurements and clinical outcomes was assessed. Results Fifty-nine patients (mean age 38.2 years, 48 males) were included. There was a strong correlation (r = 0.691–0.799) between DXA and CT fat estimation. In addition, there was a significant association of the visceral adipose tissue (VAT) on DXA and CT with the severity of AP (p = 0.039 and 0.021, respectively) and the need for drainage of collections (p = 0.026 and 0.008, respectively). There was a weak correlation of the BMI and WC with the length of hospitalization (LOH) (r = 0.121, 0.190, respectively) and length of intensive care unit stay (LOICU) (r = 0.211, 0.197), while there was a moderate to strong correlation of the truncal fat and visceral fat on DXA and total adipose tissue and VAT on CT with LOH (r = 0.562, 0.532, 0.602 and 0.614, respectively) and LOICU (r = 0.591, 0.577, 0.636, and 0.676, respectively). Conclusion In conclusion, fat indices measured on DXA and CT are associated with the severity of AP. In addition, the fat measurements at DXA are strongly correlated with those obtained at CT.

The Indonesian Throughflow region connects the tropical Pacific Ocean with the eastern Indian Ocean, and variability of the Throughflow during the Plio-Pleistocene has been related to major climate shifts at the global level. Planktic foraminiferal biostratigraphy integrated with magnetochronology provides a robust time framework for assigning age control to major paleoceanographic events. Understanding of the coupled histories of the El Niño Southern Oscillation, Western Pacific Warm Pool, Indonesian Throughflow, and the eastern Indian Ocean has greatly benefitted from the chronological framework provided by planktic foraminiferal biostratigraphies from these regions. Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Hole 762 lies under the influence of the Leeuwin Current, originating from the Indonesian Throughflow. Multiproxy data have been collected from Hole 762B and other nearby sites for paleoceanographic interpretation. However, a detailed planktic foraminiferal biostratigraphy integrated with magnetochronology is not available from this site. We provide here the sequential order of planktic foraminiferal First Occurrence (FO) and Last Occurrence (LO) events, which allowed us to divide the examined section into seven biostratigraphic zones. The biostratigraphy was integrated with magnetostratigraphy using revised ages of magnetochrons, which yielded biochronological age estimates for planktic foraminiferal events. A major planktonic faunal turnover between 3.4 and 2.7 Ma is probably related to the onset of the Northern Hemisphere glaciation and related changes in the Indonesian Throughflow. We have compared our numerical age estimates with published ages from other parts of the world. The diachronism observed probably is related to the local oceanographic setting of ODP Hole 762B, which has been alternatively influenced by changing strengths of the warm Leeuwin Current and the cold west Australian Current. The biochronology established here will be useful for correlating paleoceanographic events in the region.

We have investigated the coupling of lattice with spin via strain interactions in the CoFe2O4/PMN-PT composite system. X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopic studies illustrate a remarkable modification in CoFe2O4lattice across Curie temperature (450 K) of PMN-PT. Subsequently, CoFe2O4/PMN-PT composite reveals a sudden drop in magnetic moment across Tc of PMN-PT (450 K). However,theindependent CoFe2O4phasedisplaystypical ferromagnetic behaviour across this temperature. These findings establish spin-lattice coupling owing to th interfacial strain transfer between CoFe2O4 and PMN-PT in composite. The strain intractions leads to magneto-electric coupling, evidenced by measuring magentization and magneto-electric coefficient for the electric field poled and unploed CoFe2O4/PMN-PT composite samples. X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) analysis establishes that the cation (Fe3+/Co2+) redistribution occurs on tetrahedral and octahedral site in the electrically poled CoFe2O4/PMN-PT composite, confirming the coupling between magnetic and electric ordering in the composite. The magneto-electric coupling coefficient alpha vs dc magnetic field curves revealed hysteretic behavior and enhanced {\alpha} values after electric poling, which originates from the strain induced modifications in the magnetic domains configuration of composite in the poled samples. These findings suggest that the existence of spin lattice coupling may leads to the mechanism of strong magneto-electric effects via strain interactions in CoFe2O4/PMN-PT composite., Comment: 26 pages, 9 figures

Floating drug delivery systems are mainly expected to remain buoyant in gastric contents and consequently to enhance the bioavailability of drugs Microsphere is loaded with a drug in their outer polymer shells was prepared by a novel emulsion-solvent diffusion method. It is floated continuously over the surface of acidic dissolution media containing the surfactant for invitro time 12 hours. Floating microspheres of ofloxacin were prepared by novel o/w emulsion solvent evaporation technique using Ethyl cellulose polymers order to retain drug in body for longer period of time. Ofloxacin has short half-life of 9 hrs. So we prepared a microsphere for increasing their activity.

The development of hypertension and heart failure is correlated with the hyperactivation of the sympathetic nervous system. Beta-blockers are often considered a good therapeutic option in such clinical scenarios. However, the choice of β-blocker is a concern because of certain aspects like associated metabolic disturbances with their usage. Metoprolol has been reported to have the potential to alleviate sympathetic overdrive in patients with hypertension and heart failure. S-Metoprolol is the chirally pure β-blocker with favorable pharmacological features, improved safety profile, and allied clinical advantages versus racemic metoprolol; given this, can it be an effective therapeutic option against sympathetic overdrive in patients with hypertension and/or heart failure is not fully recognized yet. In this review, we attempted to discuss the current facts around sympathetic overdrive linked with hypertension as well as heart failure and pertaining pharmacological intervention with a focus on β-blockers in these clinical situations with an emphasis on the likely beneficial role of S-metoprolol.

Our recent studies show that the treatment of human ovarian tumor cells with NCX4040 results in significant depletions of cellular glutathione, the formation of reactive oxygen/nitrogen species and cell death. NCX4040 is also cytotoxic to several human colorectal cancer (CRC) cells in vitro and in vivo. Here, we examined the ferroptosis-dependent mechanism(s) of cytotoxicity of NCX4040 in HT-29 and K-RAS mutant HCT 116 colon cell lines. Ferroptosis is characterized by the accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) within the cell, leading to an iron-dependent oxidative stress-mediated cell death. However, its relevance in the mechanism of NCX4040 cytotoxicity in CRCs is not known. We found that NCX4040 generates ROS in CRC cells without any depletion of cellular GSH. Combinations of NCX4040 with erastin (ER) or RSL3 (RAS-selective lethal 3), known inducers of ferroptosis, enhanced CRC death. In contrast, ferrostatin-1, an inhibitor of ferroptosis, significantly inhibited NCX4040-induced cell death. Treatment of CRC cells with NCX4040 resulted in the induction of lipid peroxidation in a dose- and time-dependent manner. NCX4040 treatment induced several genes related to ferroptosis (e.g., CHAC1, GPX4 and NOX4) in both cell lines. Metabolomic studies also indicated significant increases in both lipid and energy metabolism following the drug treatment in HT-29 and HCT 116 cells. These observations strongly suggest that NCX4040 causes the ferroptosis-mediated cell death of CRC cells. Furthermore, combinations of NCX4040 and ER or RSL3 may contribute significantly to the treatment of CRC, including those that are difficult to treat due to the presence of Ras mutations in the clinic. NCX4040-induced ferroptosis may also be a dynamic form of cell death for the treatment of other cancers.

Introduction Patients at public county hospitals often have poorer access to healthcare with advanced disease on presentation. These factors, along with limited resources at county hospitals, may have an impact on outcomes for patients requiring complex head and neck reconstruction. Objective To delineate differences in the frequency of complications in two different care settings, a public county hospital and a private university hospital. Methods Retrospective review of otolaryngology patients at a university hospital compared with a publicly-funded county hospital. The main outcome measure was major complications including total flap loss or unplanned reoperation in 30 days. Secondary outcome measures included medical complications, partial flap loss, and unplanned hospital readmission in 30 days. Results In the county hospital sample (n = 58) free flap failure or reoperation occurred in 20.7% of the patients, and minor complications, in 36.2% of the patients. In the university hospital sample (n = 65) flap failure or reoperation occurred in 9.2% of the patients, and minor complications, in 12.3% of the patients. Patients at the private hospital who had surgery in the oropharynx were least likely to have minor complications. Conclusion Patients at the county hospital had a higher but not statistically significant difference in flap failure and reoperation than those at a university hospital, although the county hospital experienced more minor postoperative complications. This is likely multifactorial, and may be related to poorer access to primary care preoperatively, malnutrition, poorly controlled or undiagnosed medical comorbidities, and differences in hospital resources.

Inspired by structural colors in avian species, various synthetic strategies have been developed to produce non-iridescent, saturated colors using nanoparticle assemblies. Mixtures of nanoparticles varying in particle chemistry (or complex refractive indices) and particle size have additional emergent properties that impact the color produced. For such complex multi-component systems, an understanding of assembled structure along with a robust optical modeling tool can empower scientists to perform intensive structure-color relationship studies and fabricate designer materials with tailored color. Here, we demonstrate how we can reconstruct the assembled structure from small-angle scattering measurements using the computational reverse-engineering analysis for scattering experiments (CREASE) method and then use the reconstructed structure in finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) calculations to predict color. We successfully, quantitatively predict experimentally observed color in mixtures containing strongly absorbing melanin nanoparticles and demonstrate the influence of a single layer of segregated nanoparticles on color produced. Pioneer transcription factors have the ability to access DNA in compacted chromatin1. Multiple transcription factors can bind together to a regulatory element in a cooperative way, and cooperation between the pioneer transcription factors OCT4 (also known as POU5F1) and SOX2 is important for pluripotency and reprogramming2–4. However, the molecular mechanisms by which pioneer transcription factors function and cooperate on chromatin remain unclear. Here we present cryo-electron microscopy structures of human OCT4 bound to a nucleosome containing human LIN28B or nMATN1 DNA sequences, both of which bear multiple binding sites for OCT4. Our structural and biochemistry data reveal that binding of OCT4 induces changes to the nucleosome structure, repositions the nucleosomal DNA and facilitates cooperative binding of additional OCT4 and of SOX2 to their internal binding sites. The flexible activation domain of OCT4 contacts the N-terminal tail of histone H4, altering its conformation and thus promoting chromatin decompaction. Moreover, the DNA-binding domain of OCT4 engages with the N-terminal tail of histone H3, and post-translational modifications at H3K27 modulate DNA positioning and affect transcription factor cooperativity. Thus, our findings suggest that the epigenetic landscape could regulate OCT4 activity to ensure proper cell programming.
