Abstract

In reactor-relevant plasmas, neoclassical transport drives an outward particle flux in the core of large stellarators and predicts strongly hollow density profiles. However, this theoretical prediction is contradicted by experiments. In particular, in Wendelstein 7-X, the first large optimized stellarator, flat or weakly peaked density profiles are generally measured, indicating that neoclassical theory is not sufficient and that an inward contribution to the particle flux is missing in the core. In this Research Letter, it is shown that the turbulent contribution to the particle flux can explain the difference between experimental measurements and neoclassical predictions. The results of this Research Letter also prove that theoretical and numerical tools are approaching the level of maturity needed for the prediction of equilibrium density profiles in stellarator plasmas, which is a fundamental requirement for the design of operation scenarios of present devices and future reactors., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, updated the title and incorporated the appendix into the main letter

113. Modeling frequency shifts of collective bubble resonances with the boundary element method

Abstract

Increasing the number of closely-packed air bubbles immersed in water changes the frequency of the Minnaert resonance. The collective interactions between bubbles in a small ensemble are primarily in the same phase, causing them to radiate a spherically-symmetric field that peaks at a frequency lower than the Minnaert resonance for a single bubble. In contrast, large periodic arrays include bubbles that are further apart than half the wavelength, so that collective resonances have bubbles oscillating in opposite phases, ultimately creating a fundamental resonance at a frequency higher than the single-bubble Minnaert resonance. This work investigates the transition in resonance behavior using a modal analysis of a mass-spring system and a boundary element method. We significantly reduce the computational complexity of the full-wave solver to a linear dependence on the number of bubbles in a rectangular array. The simulated acoustic fields confirm the initial downshift in resonance frequency and the strong influence of collective resonances when the array has hundreds of bubbles covering more than half the wavelength. These results are essential in understanding the low-frequency resonance characteristics of bubble ensembles, which have important applications in diverse fields such as underwater acoustics, quantum physics, and metamaterial design.

La integración de la IA en el campo legal ha generado impacto en la administración de justicia, su influencia en la sociedad y su potencial para mejorar la eficiencia y el acceso a la justicia. Este estudio evalúa la factibilidad y conveniencia de implementar sistemas de IA en la administración de justicia mediante un análisis doctrinario y legal, considerando el potencial de la IA para optimizar procesos judiciales y sus implicaciones en términos de seguridad jurídica y economía procesal. Se examina la intersección de la IA con el derecho, que adopta nociones de codificación, algoritmos y la adopción de Sistemas Expertos Jurídicos. El objetivo es presentar una alternativa para abordar la saturación en el sistema de justicia, respetando los principios de legalidad y economía procesal. Se emplea una metodología cualitativa bibliográfica para analizar la perspectiva de la IA como herramienta para reducir tiempos y costos asociados a procesos judiciales, concluyendo que su implementación equilibrada y éticamente responsable podría traer beneficios significativos, que requiere una ponderación de aspectos regulatorios y éticos para garantizar el respeto de garantías constitucionales y evitar consecuencias, destacando así la creciente relevancia de la IA en el ámbito legal y su influencia en la administración de justicia.

We present a rigorous derivation of a macroscopic bidomain model describing the behavior of the electric potential in the fascicle based on the FitzHugh-Nagumo membrane dynamics. Abstract

We introduce and characterize the independent fluctuating two-ray (IFTR) fading model, a class of fading models consisting of two specular components which fluctuate independently, plus a diffuse component modeled as a complex Gaussian random variable. The IFTR model complements the popular fluctuating two-ray (FTR) model, on which the specular components are fully correlated and fluctuate jointly. The chief probability functions of the received SNR in IFTR fading, including the PDF, CDF and MGF, are expressed in closed-form, having a functional form similar to other state-of-the-art fading models. Then, the IFTR model is empirically validated using multiple channels measured in rather diverse scenarios, including line of sight (LOS) millimeter-wave, land mobile satellite (LMS) and underwater acoustic communication (UAC), showing a better fit than the original FTR model and other models previously used in these environments. 129. Spectral Galerkin method for solving elastic wave scattering problems with multiple open arcs

Abstract

We study the elastic time-harmonic wave scattering problems on unbounded domains with boundaries composed of finite collections of disjoints finite open arcs (or cracks) in two dimensions. Specifically, we present a fast spectral Galerkin method for solving the associated weakly- and hyper-singular boundary integral equations (BIEs) arising from Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions, respectively. Discretization bases of the resulting BIEs employ weighted Chebyshev polynomials that capture the solutions' edge behavior. We show that these bases guarantee exponential convergence in the polynomial degree when assuming analyticity of sources and arcs geometries. We present a composite wireless fading model encompassing multipath fading and shadowing based on fluctuating two-ray (FTR) fading and inverse gamma (IG) shadowing. We first determine an alternative framework for the statistical characterization and performance evaluation of the FTR fading model, which is based on the fact that the FTR fading distribution can be described as an underlying Rician Shadowed (RS) distribution with continuously varying parameter Kr (ratio of specular to diffuse components). We demonstrate that this new formulation permits to obtain a closed-form expression of the generalized moment generating function (GMGF) of the FTR model, from which the PDF and CDF of the composite IG/FTR model can be obtained in closed-form. Abstract

Professional growth of STEM teacher educators remains an underdeveloped topic in educational research. In the current study, STEM teacher educators representing six countries: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and USA completed a survey, which addressed teacher educators' professional trajectories, practices, and challenges they face to meet tenure requirements. This study utilized convergent mixed methods design applying survey research format and as such integrated both quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis. Descriptive statistics and meaning coding of the survey and interviews allowed identification of emerging themes in professional practices. The main findings suggest that there are common trends as well as country specific professional practices across professional trajectories reported by participants. The study results reveal that the lack of support during the teacher-to-teacher educator transition period was a common feature across the countries. It was also evident among participants that their professional journey begins with an assumption that as teacher educators they should primarily excel in performing teaching tasks.

Abstract

This study describes the use of a pictorial-based approach to the exploration of minority preservice elementary teachers' (PSETs) professional conceptions about science teaching and learning. Pictorial representations instead of written reports on prior learning experiences with science were used as a data-gathering tool. In this study, we incorporated worldview theory and bilingual and cultural border crossing constructs as the lens to interpret participants' reports on their personal conceptions about science learning. Implications of this study invite science teacher educators to consider the lived experiences and histories of their preservice teachers as crucial conditions for effective preparation of future teachers working with minority students.

134. On the Use of the Microtremor HVSR for Tracking Velocity Changes: A case study in Campo de Dal\'ias basin (SE Spain)

Abstract

The stability of the low-frequency peaks (< 1 Hz) obtained in the passive seismic survey of Campo de Dal\'ias basin (CDB) by applying the horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratio (HVSR) method was investigated. Three temporary seismic stations were installed in remote sites that enabled studying the stationarity of their characteristic microtremor HVSR (MHVSR) shapes. All stations began to operate in mid-2016 and recorded at least one year of continuous seismic ambient noise data, having up to two years in some. Each seismic station counted with a monitored borehole in their vicinity, registering the groundwater level every 30 minutes. The MHVSR curves were calculated for time windows of 150 s and averaged hourly. Four parameters have been defined to characterize the shape of the MHVSR around the main peak and to compare them with several environmental variables. Correlations between MHVSR characteristics and the groundwater level showed to be the most persistent. The robustness of MHVSR method for applications to seismic engineering was not found to be compromised since the observed variations were within the margins of acceptable deviations. Our results widen the possibilities of the MHVSR method from being a reliable predictor for seismic resonance to also being an autonomous monitoring tool, especially sensitive to the S-wave modifications., Comment: 63 pages, 19 figures

Abstract

We consider the problem of domain approximation in finite element methods for Maxwell equations on curved domains, i.e., when affine or polynomial meshes fail to exactly cover the domain of interest. In such cases, one is forced to approximate the domain by a sequence of polyhedral domains arising from inexact meshes. We deduce conditions on the quality of these approximations that ensure rates of error convergence between discrete solutions -- in the approximate domains -- to the continuous one in the original domain.
