The objective was to evaluate the metabolic and performance differences in primiparous Nellore cows, which became pregnant at 14 or 24 months. Thirty-eight primiparous Nellore cows, which were bred for first pregnancy at 14 or 24-mo of age, with 202 ± 5 days of gestation were divided into two treatments according to breeding age: 14 or 24 months in the breeding season. Cows were evaluated for weight, body condition score (BCS), carcass characteristics, milk yield and blood parameters: glucose, total proteins, albumin, urea, beta-hydroxybutyrate (β-OHB), non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA), progesterone, and for insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1). There was an in-teraction (p < 0.01) between age at first pregnancy and time for body weight, where 24-mo cows were heavier, but both categories loss weight at parturition which concomitant decrease in the BCS (p < 0,01). However, BW of 24-mo remained stable (p > 0.05) after parturition. Milk yield was higher in 24-mo cows (p < 0.01). Interaction between sampling time and breading age was observed for Longissimus muscle area (p < 0.01) and tended for Longissimus muscle depth, where 24-mo cows had greater values in prepartum. Calves born from the cows bred at 24-mo, where was higher (p < 0.01) from 160 days of age until weaning at 240 days. Glucose, urea, total proteins, albumin and NEFA were affected (p < 0.01) by the parturition data-point. There was an interaction (p < 0.01) between breading age and sampling period for β-OHB. Progesterone concentration was greater in 24-mo cows (p < 0.01). It was concluded that primiparous cows that became pregnant at 14 or 24 months of age have different nutritional and metabolic responses.

Seed drying has many advantages, but it can cause irreversible damages, compromising the physiological quality of seeds, especially when they present high water contents. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of drying conditions (inside and outside the pod) on the physiological quality of cowpea seeds of the cultivar BRS-Tumucumaque before and after storage. A completely randomized experimental design with four replications was used, in a split-plot arrangement. The plots consisted of combinations of harvest seasons (1, 2, 3, 4, and 5) and artificial seed drying conditions (inside and outside the pod); and the subplots consisted of storage times (0 and 6 months). The seed water contents were determined and the seeds were evaluated for germination, first germination count, emergence, emergence index, accelerated aging, and electrical conductivity. Higher physiological quality was found for dried seeds inside the pods, which was more evident in seasons 1 and 2, in both storage times. In the other seasons, the drying conditions had no effect on seed germination and vigor at the beginning of storage. The dried seeds inside the pods showed greater vigor after six months of storage. Drying seeds inside the pods favors the maintenance of physiological quality and allows artificial drying of cowpea seeds of the cultivar BRS-Tumucumaque with water content of 47%. Artificial drying of seeds with water contents higher than 32.5% is not recommended for the condition outside the pod. The seed physiological potential decreases after six months of storage, regardless of the drying condition. RESUMO A secagem pode causar prejuízos à qualidade das sementes, principalmente quando apresentam teor de água elevado. Objetivou-se avaliar a influência de condições de secagem na qualidade fisiológica inicial e após armazenamento de sementes de feijão-caupi, cv. BRS Tumucumaque. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi inteiramente casualizado, com quatro repetições, em esquema de parcelas subdivididas. Nas parcelas foram alocadas a combinações dos fatores época de colheita (1, 2, 3, 4 e 5) e condição de secagem artificial das sementes (dentro e fora da vagem); os tempos de armazenamento (0 e 6 meses) foram alocados na subparcela. Determinou-se o teor de água e as sementes foram avaliadas pelos testes de germinação, primeira contagem de germinação, emergência, índice de velocidade de emergência, envelhecimento acelerado e condutividade elétrica. Resultados superiores de qualidade fisiológica foram verificados para as sementes secas dentro da vagem, fato mais evidente nas épocas 1 e 2, em ambos os tempos de armazenamento. Para as demais épocas, no início do armazenamento não houve efeito da condição de secagem na germinação e vigor. As sementes secas dentro da vagem apresentaram maior vigor após seis meses de armazenamento. A secagem dentro da vagem favorece a manutenção da qualidade fisiológica e permite a secagem artificial de sementes de feijão-caupi, cv. BRS Tumucumaque, com teor de água de 47%. Não se recomenda a secagem artificial de sementes com teor de água acima de 32,5% na condição fora da vagem. Após seis meses de armazenamento, independentemente da condição de secagem, há redução no potencial fisiológico das sementes.

Introduction Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) has been the cornerstone of prostate cancer treatment. ADT delays cancer progression, alleviates cancer-related symptoms, and is associated with survival gains. Despite these established benefits, the therapy comes with known side effects, such as increased cardiovascular adverse events and metabolic changes. Despite the well-established association between the level of circulating testosterone and endothelial integrity, the direct effects of ADT on endothelial function remain controversial. Objective The aim of the present study was to investigate the impact of ADT on endothelial function, through the analysis of vascular parameters of the brachial artery, and the measurement of serum inflammatory markers. It was also our goal to evaluate early impact of ADT on anthropometric and metabolic parameters Methods We prospectively evaluated men with moderate to high-risk prostate cancer treated with ADT from January to July 2022 at our institution. Patients with decompensated diabetes mellitus (HbA1c >9%), active smokers or smokers who have ceased for less than 5 years and those with confirmed diagnosis of peripheral artery disease, coronary artery disease, angina, congestive heart failure, myocardial infarction, coronary revascularization or stroke, were excluded. Brachial artery assessment included vascular diameter and flow-mediated (endothelium-dependent) vasodilation (FMD) using high-resolution B-mode ultrasound. Our metabolic and inflammatory profile included serum measurement of total cholesterol and fractions, triglycerides, fasting glucose, glycated hemoglobin, basal insulin, C-reactive protein, and bioimpedance assessment of body fat distribution. All measurements were performed at baseline and after 3 months of ADT initiation with goserelin acetate 10.80mg. Results A total of 14 men with mean age of 67.9 ± 6.9 years were included. The prevalence of diabetes in the present cohort was 21.4%. FMD demonstrated a slight increase following ADT, which did not reach statistical significance after 3 months (median 2.2% vs. 5.0%; p = 0.8224 – Figure 1). Baseline brachial artery diameter significantly decreased with ADT compared to baseline (median diameter 0.43cm vs 0.40cm; p = 0.006). With regard to the metabolic profile, ADT significantly increased insulin resistance: fasting insulin levels (mean 9.67 ± 6.09 vs 13.19 ± 7.47; p = 0.002), glycated hemoglobin (mean 5.79% ± 0.47 vs 6.22% ± 0.75; p = 0.009) and homeostatic model assessment insulin resistance increased significantly after 3 months (p = 0.006). Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (mean 112.00 ± 27.35 vs 128.90 ± 29.00; p = 0.01) and triglycerides (mean 145.40 ± 78.52 vs 168.20 ± 105.80; p = 0.03) concentrations were higher after 3 months of ADT. No significant differences were found in body fat distribution. Conclusions Although the present study has not demonstrated a significant change in brachial artery FMD, we verified an important and surprisingly early worsening of the metabolic profile with ADT, especially increased insulin resistance and dyslipidemia, which represent well-established risk factors for cardiovascular events. BackgroundDespite the multitude of clinical manifestations of post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection (PASC), studies applying statistical methods to directly investigate patterns of symptom co-occurrence and their biological correlates are scarce.MethodsWe assessed 30 symptoms pertaining to different organ systems in 749 adults (age = 55 ± 14 years; 47% female) during in-person visits conducted at 6–11 months after hospitalization due to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), including six psychiatric and cognitive manifestations. Symptom co-occurrence was initially investigated using exploratory factor analysis (EFA), and latent variable modeling was then conducted using Item Response Theory (IRT). We investigated associations of latent variable severity with objective indices of persistent physical disability, pulmonary and kidney dysfunction, and C-reactive protein and D-dimer blood levels, measured at the same follow-up assessment.ResultsThe EFA extracted one factor, explaining 64.8% of variance; loadings were positive for all symptoms, and above 0.35 for 16 of them. The latent trait generated using IRT placed fatigue, psychiatric, and cognitive manifestations as the most discriminative symptoms (coefficients > 1.5, p < 0.001). Latent trait severity was associated with decreased body weight and poorer physical performance (coefficients > 0.240; p ⩽ 0.003), and elevated blood levels of C-reactive protein (coefficient = 0.378; 95% CI 0.215–0.541; p < 0.001) and D-dimer (coefficient = 0.412; 95% CI 0.123–0.702; p = 0.005). Results were similar after excluding subjects with pro-inflammatory comorbidities.ConclusionsDifferent symptoms that persist for several months after moderate or severe COVID-19 may unite within one latent trait of PASC. This trait is dominated by fatigue and psychiatric symptoms, and is associated with objective signs of physical disability and persistent systemic inflammation.

Aims: To evaluate the antifungal effect of dobutamine against Candida glabrata as well as its synergism with azoles and its action on biofilm. Methods: The M27-A3 protocol and flow cytometry were used for elucidation of the possible mechanism of action. Results: The tested isolates presented MICs ranging from 2 to 32 μg/ml for dobutamine, with fungistatic effect. A total of 82% of the strains showed synergism with fluconazole, with 90% showing synergism with itraconazole. The effect on biofilm formation was nonsignificant. Cytometry tests showed that dobutamine induced mitochondrial depolarization. Conclusion: Dobutamine has an antifungal effect on strains of C. glabrata and synergistic activity with azoles. This effect is probably mediated by increased oxidative damage to the membrane.

The conservation of elephant grass cultivar Capiaçu in the form of total mixed ration (TMR) silage can help to improve the quality of the fermentative process and optimize feed management. However, the best cutting age of grass and the necessity of using microbes-enzymatic additives to aid in the process have not been determined thus far. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate cutting age and different microbes-enzymatic additives on the fermentative and nutritional quality of total mixed ration (TMR) silages based on BRS Capiaçu. A completely randomized design was used in a 3×3 factorial scheme, with three cutting ages of grass (60, 90, and 120 days of regrowth), associated with three types of additives [CON (control), HOM (homofermentative inoculant + fibrolytic enzyme), and COMBO (homofermentative inoculant + heterofermentative inoculant + fibrolytic enzyme)]. The fermentative losses, the production of organic acids, chemical composition, and the aerobic stability of the tested silages were measured. The TMR silages containing 60-day-old grass showed the lowest dry matter contents, highest effluent production, and lower aerobic stability. The COMBO inoculant application provided higher acetic acid contents and greater aerobic stability of the 90- and 120-day-old grass silages. The highest lactic acid concentrations were observed in silages produced with the 60- and 90-day-old grass silages. It is concluded that the TMR produced with BRS Capiaçu at 90 days of age and in association with COMBO is the best option to balance the nutritional and fermentative quality of this type of silage.

Poor reproductive performance in beef cattle caused by infectious agents results in major financial losses as a result of reduced pregnancy rates and extended calving intervals. Bulls can be subclinical chronic carriers of bacterial and protozoal agents involved in cow infertility, such as Campylobacter fetus subsp. venerealis, Ureaplasma diversum, Mycoplasma bovigenitalium, Mycoplasma bovis, and Tritrichomonas foetus. Bulls harbor these microorganisms in their preputial crypts and transmit the agents to cows during natural mating. To obtain an overview of the etiologic agents in the preputial mucus of bulls, we aimed to identify, by PCR assay, C. fetus subsp. venerealis, M. bovis, U. diversum, M. bovigenitalium, and T. foetus in Brazilian bulls from farms with high infertility rates. We collected preputial mucus from 210 bulls on 18 beef cattle farms in Brazil between 2019 and 2020. We found at least one of the infectious agents that we were studying in bulls on 16 of the 18 beef cattle farms tested. We detected at least one infectious agent from 159 of 210 (76%) bulls tested, namely C. fetus subsp. venerealis, M. bovis, U. diversum, M. bovigenitalium, and T. foetus in 87 (55%), 84 (53%), 45 (28%), 28 (18%), and 1 (0.6%) animal, respectively. We found 95 bulls (60%) positive for only 1 etiologic agent (single infection) and 64 bulls (40%) carried multiple agents. Our results demonstrate the occurrence of bacterial and protozoal infectious agents that may be related to infertility in Brazilian beef cattle herds.

Headaches are the most frequent neurological disorder in the pediatric population, with great impact on quality of life. This study aims to characterize a cohort of patients followed at a pediatric neurology unit between January 1st 2013 and December 31st, 2021.We reviewed medical records and selected patients with primary headaches and a minimum follow-up of 12 months.A total of 226 patients were included, 54.4% female, with an average age at headache onset of 9 ± 3.5 (3.1-16.5) years; 63.5% were prepubertal. A positive family history of headache was identified in 76.6% of cases and triggers in 63.6%. At first clinical assessment, 45.1% were classified as migraine without aura, 10.6% as migraine with aura, 3.5% tension-type, 8% mixed (tension and migraine), 1.3% other type and 31.4% were unclassifiable. The patients had a median follow-up of 2.4 (1.8-3.3) years. The diagnosis of tension-type headaches remained stable in 75% of the patients and resolved in 25%; 13% of the patients with migraine without aura changed into another type of headache and 17.4% resolved; 44.4% of the patients with migraine with aura turned into another type of headache and 11.1% resolved. Of the variables studied, only duration of headache episode had a significant association with headache remission, with odds ratio 0.16 (p = 0.03; 95% confidence interval: 0.032-0.84).Our study shows that headache type in pediatric population changes over time, especially in those with migraine with aura. The duration of each headache episode was presented as a predictor of headache remission over time.Cefaleas primarias con inicio en la infancia y la adolescencia: historia natural y factores pronósticos en una población portuguesa.Introducción. Las cefaleas son el trastorno neurológico más habitual en la población pediátrica e influyen notablemente en su calidad de vida. La finalidad de este estudio es caracterizar una cohorte de pacientes en seguimiento en una unidad de neurología pediátrica entre el 1 de enero de 2013 y el 31 de diciembre de 2021. Materiales y métodos. Hemos revisado informes médicos y seleccionado a pacientes con dolores de cabeza primarios y un seguimiento mínimo de 12 meses. Resultados. Se incluyó a un total de 226 pacientes, el 54,4% mujeres, con una media de edad al comenzar las cefaleas de 9 ± 3,5 (3,1-16,5) años; el 63,5% eran prepuberales. Se identificó un historial familiar positivo de cefalea en el 76,6% de los casos y factores desencadenantes en el 63,6%. En una primera evaluación clínica, el 45,1% se identificó como migrañas sin aura; el 10,6%, como migrañas con aura; el 3,5%, como cefalea tensional; el 8%, como de tipo mixto (cefalea tensional y migraña); el 1,3%, de otro tipo; y el 31,4% resultó inclasificable. Los pacientes se sometieron a un seguimiento promedio de 2,4 (1,8-3,3) años. El diagnóstico de cefalea tensional se mantuvo estable en el 75% de los pacientes y se solucionó en un 25%; para el 13% de los pacientes con migraña sin aura, el diagnóstico cambió a otro tipo de cefalea, y para el 17,4%, se solucionó; para el 44,4% de los pacientes sin migraña con aura, el diagnóstico cambió por el de otro tipo de cefalea, y para el 11,1%, se resolvió. De las variables estudiadas, sólo la duración del episodio de cefalea tuvo una asociación significativa con la remisión de la cefalea, con una odds ratio de 0,16 (p = 0,03; intervalo de confianza al 95%: 0,032-0,84). Conclusiones. Nuestro estudio muestra que el tipo de cefalea en la población pediátrica cambia con el paso del tiempo, especialmente en los pacientes con migraña con aura. La duración de cada uno de los episodios de cefalea se presentó como un predictor de la remisión de la cefalea con el paso del tiempo.

Water supply quality, nutrient availability in irrigation solutions, and discharge water or effluents must be monitored for protected cultivation to achieve sustainable management of food production. This study aimed to evaluate whether effluent solution from mini-tomato-protected crops can be recycled in an irrigation system based on plant nutritional demands. The experiment was carried out on a farm with mini-tomato protected-cropping. Water supply, as well as nutrient and effluent solutions, were analyzed in the experiment. Water supply was within the Brazilian limits established by CONAMA, except for nitrite, phosphorus, and sulfide. The effluent solution showed significant concentrations of macro- and micronutrients, highlighting phosphorus (220 to 395 mg L-1). The replacement of nutrient solution in the central fertigation tank, excess of elements applied in the nutrient solution, and accumulation of effluent solution in the disposal tank kept the effluent solution enriched when compared to the nutrient solution initially applied. Water quality monitoring showed that effluent solution can be reused in the irrigation system based on its physicochemical parameters and mini-tomato tomato nutritional demands. The analyses also allowed us to detect control points to achieve food production sustainability.

Background Domestic violence continues to be a major public health issue that affects millions of individuals worldwide. According to the 2015-2016 India National Family Health Survey, 33% of married women had been victims of spousal physical, sexual, or emotional violence. It was also revealed that spousal abuse differs depending on the level of the husband's alcohol consumption. In this case, determining the link between this consumption and domestic violence is critical. Methods The effects of husbands’ alcohol use on the occurrence of domestic violence and associated risk factors were investigated using data from the 2015-2016 India Individual Record Database (DHS) A binomial logistic regression model was used for the analysis. Results 62554 married women aged 15 to 49 were chosen for this study, of which 31.2% have experienced some form of marital violence. Women with husbands who drink alcohol account for 31% of the sample, with 49.5% of those committing domestic violence against their wives. In a multivariate analysis, women whose spouses drink have a 3.11 times higher chance (p < 0.01; adjOR=3.11, 95%CI 3-3.23) of experiencing domestic violence than women whose husbands don't drink. Conclusions The effect of the husband's alcohol use on the occurrence of domestic violence can be used to guide evidence-based targeted intervention. Key messages
