Abstract

Ultracold quantum gases are ideal sources for high-precision space-borne sensing as proposed for Earth observation, relativistic geodesy and tests of fundamental physical laws as well as for studying new phenomena in many-body physics extended free fall. By performing experiments with the Cold Atom Lab aboard the International Space Station, we have achieved exquisite control over the quantum state of single Bose-Einstein condensates paving the way for future high-precision measurements. In particular, we have applied fast transport protocols to shuttle the atomic cloud over a millimeter distance with sub-micrometer accuracy and subsequently drastically reduced the total expansion energy to below 100 pK with matterwave lensing techniques., Comment: 25 pages, 10 figures

Abstract

The global spread of antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) poses a significant threat to public health. While antibiotics effectively treat bacterial infections, they can also induce gut dysbiosis, the severity of which varies depending on the specific antibiotic treatment used. However, it remains unclear how gut dysbiosis affects the mobility and dynamics of ARGs. To address this, mice were pre-treated with streptomycin, ampicillin, or sulfamethazine, and then orally inoculated with Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium and S. Heidelberg carrying a multi-drug resistance IncA/C plasmid. The streptomycin pre-treatment caused severe microbiome perturbation, promoting the high-density colonization of S. Heidelberg and S. Typhimurium, and enabling an IncA/C transfer from S. Heidelberg to S. Typhimurium and a commensal Escherichia coli. The ampicillin pre-treatment induced moderate microbiome perturbation, supporting only S. Heidelberg colonization and the IncA/C transfer to commensal E. coli. The sulfamethazine pre-treatment led to mild microbiome perturbation, favoring neither Salmonella spp. colonization nor a conjugative plasmid transfer. The degree of gut dysbiosis also influenced the enrichment or depletion of the ARGs associated with mobile plasmids or core commensal bacteria, respectively. These findings underscore the significance of pre-existing gut dysbiosis induced by various antibiotic treatments on ARG dissemination and may inform prudent antibiotic use practices.

Abstract

Background Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a severe psychiatric disorder associated with frequent relapses and variability in treatment responses. Previous literature suggested that such variability is influenced by premorbid vulnerabilities such as abnormalities of the reward system. Several factors may indicate these vulnerabilities, such as neurocognitive markers (tendency to favour delayed reward, poor cognitive flexibility, abnormal decision process), genetic and epigenetic markers, biological and hormonal markers, and physiological markers.The present study will aim to identify markers that can predict body mass index (BMI) stability 6 months after discharge. The secondary aim of this study will be focused on characterising the biological, genetic, epigenetic and neurocognitive markers of remission in AN.Methods and analysis One hundred and twenty-five (n=125) female adult inpatients diagnosed with AN will be recruited and evaluated at three different times: at the beginning of hospitalisation, when discharged and 6 months later. Abstract

Abstract The global demand from multi-sectoral partners for operational tools for One Health implementation and capacity building is increasing, yet a validated global inventory of One Health tools did not exist. Here, we map and analyze available One Health tools and assess their suitability to support One Health implementation, including the One Health Joint Plan of Action 2022–2026 (OH JPA). Our objectives were to identify (i) publicly available One Health tools to support capacity building and OH JPA implementation; (ii) optimal outcomes for countries/regions using available One Health tools; (iii) linkages to OH JPA Action Tracks and pathways in the One Health Theory of Change (TOC); and (iv) gaps and priorities for the development of additional One Health tools. One Health High Level Expert Panel (OHHLEP) members compiled information on One Health tools that were publicly available and released up to June 30, 2023, via online sources and partner networks including the Quadripartite organizations. Inclusion criteria addressed One Health relevance, use at the national, subnational, or regional level in ≥5 locations, and publicly available information. Tools were assessed for applicability by OH JPA action track, TOC pathway, scope, and intended outcomes, as well as the extent to which tools addressed gender equality, social inclusion, and environmental dimensions of One Health. Of 132 candidate tools, 50 (38%) met the inclusion criteria. These tools addressed all six OH JPA Action Tracks, but relatively fewer tools addressed Action Tracks 4 (Food Safety), 5 (Antimicrobial Resistance), and 6 (Environmental Integration). Tools were available to support all three TOC outcome pathways, and many addressed more than one Action Track and TOC outcome pathway. Most available One Health tools addressed assessment and to a lesser extent implementation, with fewer tools available for action planning, prioritization, and monitoring. Gaps and opportunities for improving One Health tools were identified, including the integration of the environment dimension, gender equality, and social inclusion. Ultimately, our findings will contribute to further the advancement of One Health globally, including via OH JPA implementation, while spurring adjustments to existing One Health tools and the development of new ones to address key gaps. One Health impact statement The One Health approach is gaining momentum globally, and this study represents the first integrated mapping and analysis of globally available One Health tools. Our findings aim to improve the quality, applicability, and availability of tools to support One Health implementation at the subnational, national, regional, and global levels, including through the Quadripartite’s One Health Joint Plan of Action. By using the OHHLEP definition of One Health to assess available One Health tools and map them onto the One Health Joint Plan of Action, we identify the need for a systematic approach and enhanced integration across dimensions of One Health to lead to sustainable One Health systems.

Abstract

Time resolved pump and probe acoustics and first-principles calculations were employed to assess elastic properties of the TbMnO3 perovskite manganite having orthorhombic symmetry. Measuring sound velocities of bulk longitudinal and shear acoustic waves propagating along at least two different directions in the high symmetry planes (100), (010) and (001), provided a powerful mean to selectively determine the six diagonal elastic constants C11= 227 GPa, C22= 349 GPa, C33= 274 GPa, C44= 71 GPa, C55= 57 GPa, C66= 62 GPa. Among the three remaining off-diagonal ones, C23= 103 GPa was determined with a bissectrice direction. Density functional theory calculations with colinear spin-polarized provided complementary insights on their optical, elastic and magnetoelastic properties.

Abstract

The stability of matter-wave sensors benefits from interrogating large-particle-number atomic ensembles at high cycle rates. The use of quantum-degenerate gases with their low effective temperatures allows constraining systematic errors towards highest accuracy, but their production by evaporative cooling is costly with regard to both atom number and cycle rate. In this work, we report on the creation of cold matter-waves using a crossed optical dipole trap and shaping it by means of an all-optical matter-wave lens. We demonstrate the trade off between residual kinetic energy and atom number by short-cutting evaporative cooling and estimate the corresponding performance gain in matter-wave sensors. Abstract

An extension is proposed to the internal symmetry transformations associated with mass, entropy and other Clebsch-related conservation in geophysical fluid dynamics. Those symmetry transformations were previously parameterized with an arbitrary function $\cal F$ of materially conserved Clebsch potentials. The extension consists in adding potential vorticity $q$ to the list of fields on which a new arbitrary function $\cal G$ depends. If ${\cal G}=q{\cal A}(s)$, where ${\cal A}(s)$ is an arbitrary function of specific entropy $s$, then the symmetry is trivial and gives rise to a trivial conservation law. Otherwise, the symmetry is non-trivial and an associated non-trivial conservation law exists. Moreover, the notions of trivial and non-trivial Casimir invariants are defined. All non-trivial symmetries that become hidden following a reduction of phase space are associated with non-trivial Casimir invariants of a non-canonical Hamiltonian formulation for fluids, while all trivial conservation laws are associated with trivial Casimir invariants.

Abstract

Abstract Background Precise data about ATTR-CM incidence rates at national level are scarce. Consequently, this study aimed to estimate the annual incidence and survival of transthyretin amyloid cardiomyopathy (ATTR-CM) in France between 2011 and 2019 using real world data. We used the French nationwide exhaustive data (SNDS database) gathering in- and out-patient claims. As there is no specific ICD-10 marker code for ATTR-CM, diagnosis required both amyloidosis (identified by E85. ICD-10 code or a tafamidis meglumine delivery) and a cardiovascular condition (identified by ICD-10 or medical procedure codes related to either heart failure, arrhythmias, conduction disorders or cardiomyopathies), not necessarily reported at the same visit. Patients with probable AL-form of amyloidosis or probable AA-form of amyloidosis were excluded. Results Between 2011 and 2019, 8,950 patients with incident ATTR-CM were identified. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), a major holistic approach to health and disease, has been used for a long time globally (>100 years) and in China (>1000 years) for various medical conditions. However, the contrast between TCM and modern medicine is remarkable, and the underlying mechanisms of TCM remain unclear. In modern medicine, immunology is a complex, holistic defense system against pathogens, preserving homeostasis and influencing disease development. Notably, TCM and immunology share core concepts, such as holism, defense mechanisms, equilibrium, balance, and circadian rhythms. This review focuses on the similarities and distinctions between these two disciplines and sheds light on ancient TCM theories by leveraging modern immunological parameters. In addition, we emphasize the potential of advanced “omics” research methods to unravel TCM's mechanisms, providing compelling biological evidence for its therapeutic principles and effects using immunological data.

Abstract

Abstract Assessing wildlife health in remote regions requires a multi-faceted approach, which commonly involves convenient samplings and the need of identifying and targeting relevant and informative indicators. We applied a novel wildlife health framework and critically assessed the value of different indicators for understanding the health status and trends of an endangered tundra caribou population. Samples and data from the Dolphin and Union caribou herd were obtained between 2015 and 2021, from community-based surveillance programs and from captured animals. We documented and categorized indicators into health determinants (infectious diseases and trace elements), processes (cortisol, pathology), and health outcomes (pregnancy and body condition). During a recent period of steep population decline, our results indicated a relatively good body condition and pregnancy rates, and decreasing levels of stress, along with a low adult cow survival. We detected multiple factors as potential contributors to the reduced survival, including Brucella suis biovar 4, Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae and lower hair trace minerals. These results remark the need of targeted studies to improve detection and investigations on caribou mortalities. We also identified differences in health indicators between captured and hunter sampled caribou, highlighting the importance of accounting for sampling biases. This integrative approach that drew on multiple data sources has provided unprecedented knowledge on the health in this herd and highlights the value of documenting individual animal health to understand causes of wildlife declines.

We examine a simple stochastic strategy for adapting well-known single-point acquisition functions to allow batch active learning. Unlike acquiring the top-K points from the pool set, score- or rank-based sampling takes into account that acquisition scores change as new data are acquired. This simple strategy for adapting standard single-sample acquisition strategies can even perform just as well as compute-intensive state-of-the-art batch acquisition functions, like BatchBALD or BADGE, while using orders of magnitude less compute. Abstract

Accurate modeling of the solvent environment for biological molecules is crucial for computational biology and drug design. A popular approach to achieve long simulation time scales for large system sizes is to incorporate the effect of the solvent in a mean-field fashion with implicit solvent models. However, a challenge with existing implicit solvent models is that they often lack accuracy or certain physical properties compared to explicit solvent models, as the many-body effects of the neglected solvent molecules is difficult to model as a mean field. Here, we leverage machine learning (ML) and multi-scale coarse graining (CG) in order to learn implicit solvent models that can approximate the energetic and thermodynamic properties of a given explicit solvent model with arbitrary accuracy, given enough training data. Following the previous ML--CG models CGnet and CGSchnet, we introduce ISSNet, a graph neural network, to model the implicit solvent potential of mean force. ISSNet can learn from explicit solvent simulation data and be readily applied to MD simulations. We compare the solute conformational distributions under different solvation treatments for two peptide systems. The results indicate that ISSNet models can outperform widely-used generalized Born and surface area models in reproducing the thermodynamics of small protein systems with respect to explicit solvent. Abstract

We are concerned in this paper with the real eigenfunctions of Schr\"odinger operators. We prove an asymptotic upper bound for the number of their nodal domains, which implies in particular that the inequality stated in Courant's theorem is strict, except for finitely many eigenvalues. Results of this type originated in 1956 with Pleijel's Theorem on the Dirichlet Laplacian and were obtained for some classes of Schr\"odinger operators by the first author, alone and in collaboration with B. Helffer and T. Hoffmann-Ostenhof. Using methods in part inspired by work of the second author on Neumann and Robin Laplacians, we greatly extend the scope of these previous results.

Abstract

Dataset bias is one of the prevailing causes of unfairness in machine learning. Addressing fairness at the data collection and dataset preparation stages therefore becomes an essential part of training fairer algorithms. In particular, active learning (AL) algorithms show promise for the task by drawing importance to the most informative training samples. However, the effect and interaction between existing AL algorithms and algorithmic fairness remain under-explored. In this paper, we study whether models trained with uncertainty-based AL heuristics such as BALD are fairer in their decisions with respect to a protected class than those trained with identically independently distributed (i.i.d.) sampling. We found a significant improvement on predictive parity when using BALD, while also improving accuracy compared to i.i.d. sampling. We also explore the interaction of algorithmic fairness methods such as gradient reversal (GRAD) and BALD. Individual investors are now massively using online brokers to trade stocks with convenient interfaces and low fees, albeit losing the advice and personalization traditionally provided by full-service brokers. We frame the problem faced by online brokers of replicating this level of service in a low-cost and automated manner for a very large number of users. Because of the care required in recommending financial products, we focus on a risk-management approach tailored to each user's portfolio and risk profile. We show that our hybrid approach, based on Modern Portfolio Theory and Collaborative Filtering, provides a sound and effective solution. The method is applicable to stocks as well as other financial assets, and can be easily combined with various financial forecasting models. We validate our proposal by comparing it with several baselines in a domain expert-based study.

Abstract

We have performed elasticity measurements in the bulk multiferroic BiFeO3 (BFO) using acoustical pump and probe spectroscopy. The sound velocities of the (quasi)-longitudinal and of the two (quasi)-transverse acoustic waves along three independent directions of the (110) surface have been measured. Moreover, one surface wave and one longitudinal wave propagating perpendicular to the surface have been detected. Based on initial input values of the six independent Cij elastic constants determined by our density functional theory calculations and our eleven experimental velocities, the numerical resolution of the acoustic equations allows to determine all the Cij elastic constants of BFO. The propagation direction dependence of volume and surface waves phase velocities allows the unambiguously assignment of the waves, hence the polarization of phonons.

Abstract

A novel numerical approach to solving the shallow-water equations on the sphere using high-order numerical discretizations in both space and time is proposed. A space-time tensor formalism is used to express the equations of motion covariantly and to describe the geometry of the rotated cubed-sphere grid. The spatial discretization is done with the direct flux reconstruction method, which is an alternative formulation to the discontinuous Galerkin approach. The equations of motion are solved in differential form and the resulting discretization is free from quadrature rules. It is well known that the time step of traditional explicit methods is limited by the phase velocity of the fastest waves. Exponential integration is employed to enable integrations with significantly larger time step sizes and improve the efficiency of the overall time integration. New multistep-type exponential propagation iterative methods of orders 4, 5 and 6 are constructed and applied to integrate the shallow-water equations in time. These new schemes enable time integration with high-order accuracy but without significant increases in computational time compared to low-order methods. The exponential matrix functions-vector products used in the exponential schemes are approximated using the complex-step approximation of the Jacobian in the Krylov-based KIOPS (Krylov with incomplete orthogonalization procedure solver) algorithm. Performance of the new numerical methods is evaluated using a set of standard benchmark tests.

Abstract

Cable-Driven Parallel Robots (CDPRs) offer high payload capacities, large translational workspace and high dynamic performances. The rigid base frame of the CDPR is connected in parallel to the moving platform using cables. However, their orientation workspace is usually limited due to cable/cable and cable/moving platform collisions. This paper deals with the design, modelling and prototyping of a hybrid robot. This robot, which is composed of a CDPR mounted in series with a Parallel Spherical Wrist (PSW), has both a large translational workspace and an unlimited orientation workspace. It should be noted that the six degrees of freedom (DOF) motions of the moving platform of the CDPR, namely, the base of the PSW, and the three-DOF motion of the PSW are actuated by means of eight actuators fixed to the base. As a consequence, the overall system is underactuated and its total mass and inertia in motion is reduced.

Abstract

This study characterizes cancer and non-cancer risks due to inhalation exposure to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in a border city of Windsor in southern Ontario, Canada, using hourly ambient concentrations collected from 17 November 2021 to 17 March 2023. The total incremental lifetime cancer risk (CR) due to benzene and ethylbenzene is 4.33 × 10−6, which is in the acceptable risk range of 1 × 10−6 to 1 × 10−4 used by the USEPA. The CR was higher in winter (5.20 × 10−6), followed by fall (4.32 × 10−6), spring (3.86 × 10−6), and summer (2.96 × 10−6), all in the acceptable range. The total chronic non-cancer risk (Hazard Quotient, HQ) of inhalation exposure to 16 VOCs was 0.0488, with a higher value in fall (0.0571), followed by winter (0.0464), and lower in spring (0.0454) and summer (0.0451), all in the safe level of below HQ = 1 used by the USEPA. The hazard index (HI) by organs was higher for the nervous system (0.0213), followed by the hematologic system and immune system (0.0165 each), but much lower for the other five target organs, i.e., the liver/kidney (1.52 × 10−4), developmental system (3.38 × 10−4), endocrine system and urinary system (2.82 × 10−4 each), and respiratory system (9.70 × 10−5). Similar hour-of-day trends were observed in the total CR, total HQ, and HI by organs with higher values in the early morning hours of 5:00–8:00 and lower values during 12:00 to 15:00. Benzene was the major contributor to both total CR (89%) and total HQ (34%) due to its high toxicity and high concentrations. Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX) contributed 100% of the total CR and 51% of the total HQ. Further, BTEX is the sole contributor to the HI for the hematologic system and immune system and the major contributor to the HI for the nervous system (39%) and developmental system (55%). Higher cancer and non-cancer risks were associated with the airmass from the east, southeast, and southwest of Windsor.

Abstract

(1) Background: Water and solid fuel collection and transport are domestic duties for millions of households across the globe. People in areas with limited or no access to safely managed sources of water and household energy must fetch these resources on a frequent basis. The health, gender, and economic impacts associated with water and solid fuel collection labor have not been systematically reviewed. (2) Methods: Studies were identified through database searches and included using a list of inclusion and exclusion criteria. Studies were summarized and grouped into one of eight thematic categories. (4) Conclusions: The findings suggest that a diverse and heavy health burden is associated with water and solid fuel collection and transport. The literature also suggests that the provision of safely managed and accessible water and improved fuel options can mitigate these negative outcomes. Filling research gaps and utilizing results to guide policy and funding would likely be an effective way to ensure low- and middle-income countries are not left behind as the world strives to meet the sustainable development goals.
