We searched for proton decay via $p\to\mu^+K^0$ in 0.37\,Mton$\cdot$years of data collected between 1996 and 2018 from the Super-Kamiokande water Cherenkov experiment. The selection criteria were defined separately for $K^0_S$ and $K^0_L$ channels. No significant event excess has been observed. As a result of this analysis, which extends the previous search by an additional 0.2\,Mton$\cdot$years of exposure and uses an improved event reconstruction, we set a lower limit of $3.6\times10^{33}$ years on the proton lifetime., Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures

The T2K experiment widely uses plastic scintillator as a target for neutrino interactions and an active medium for the measurement of charged particles produced in neutrino interactions at its near detector complex. Over 10 years of operation the measured light yield recorded by the scintillator based subsystems has been observed to degrade by 0.9--2.2\% per year. Extrapolation of the degradation rate through to 2040 indicates the recorded light yield should remain above the lower threshold used by the current reconstruction algorithms for all subsystems. This will allow the near detectors to continue contributing to important physics measurements during the T2K-II and Hyper-Kamiokande eras. Additionally, work to disentangle the degradation of the plastic scintillator and wavelength shifting fibres shows that the reduction in light yield can be attributed to the ageing of the plastic scintillator., Comment: 29 pages, 18 figures. The T2K experiment presents new measurements of neutrino oscillation parameters using 19.7(16.3)×1020 protons on target (POT) in (anti-)neutrino mode at the far detector (FD). Compared to the previous analysis, an additional 4.7×1020 POT neutrino data was collected at the FD. Significant improvements were made to the analysis methodology, with the near-detector analysis introducing new selections and using more than double the data. Additionally, this is the first T2K oscillation analysis to use NA61/SHINE data on a replica of the T2K target to tune the neutrino flux model, and the neutrino interaction model was improved to include new nuclear effects and calculations. Frequentist and Bayesian analyses are presented, including results on sin2θ13 and the impact of priors on the δCP measurement. Both analyses prefer the normal mass ordering and upper octant of sin2θ23 with a nearly maximally CP-violating phase. Assuming the normal ordering and using the constraint on sin2θ13 from reactors, sin2θ23=0.561-0.032+0.021 using Feldman-Cousins corrected intervals, and Δm322=2.494-0.058+0.041×10-3eV2 using constant Δχ2 intervals. The CP-violating phase is constrained to δCP=-1.97-0.70+0.97 using Feldman-Cousins corrected intervals, and δCP=0,π is excluded at more than 90% confidence level. A Jarlskog invariant of zero is excluded at more than 2σ credible level using a flat prior in δCP, and just below 2σ using a flat prior in sinδCP. When the external constraint on sin2θ13 is removed, sin2θ13=28.0-6.5+2.8×10-3, in agreement with measurements from reactor experiments. These results are consistent with previous T2K analyses.

IntroductionSurgical-related injuries are frequent, in fact the reported percentage of musculoskeletal disorders in surgeons is between 47% and 87%. These conditions are caused by long periods of standing, incorrect postures, repeated movements, little rest between operations, the lack of integrated operator rooms, the correct number and arrangement of monitors and the use of non-ergonomic instruments. This survey aims to assess the Italian overview both highlighting how prevalent surgical-related injury is in our surgeons and whether there is an operating room ergonomics education program in Italian surgical specialty schools.MethodsAn anonymous questionnaire was designed through SurveyMonkey© web application. This survey was composed of 3 different sections concerning the general characteristics of the participants, their surgical background and any training performed, and any injuries or ailments related to the surgical activity. The survey was carried out in the period 1th of December 2022 and the 6th of February 2023.ResultsAt the close of our survey, 300 responses were collected. Among the participants, the two most represented specialties were Gynecology and Obstetrics (42.3%) and General Surgery (39.7%) and surgeons were mainly employed in the Northern regions of Italy (54.8%). Analyzing the participants’ background, 61.7% of the respondents had laparoscopic training during their training and only 53.1% had a pelvic trainer during their residency. In accordance with 98.7% of the respondents, during surgery we have the feeling of being in an uncomfortable position that causes discomfort or muscle pain, and regarding the frequency of these discomforts, the majority of our study population experiences these problems monthly (46.2%), while in 29.6% it is experienced weekly, 12.1% annually and finally 12.1% daily. The surgical approach that is most correlated with these disorders is laparoscopy (62.7%) while the one that causes the least discomfort is robotic surgery (1.4%). These discomforts cause 43.9% of our population to take a break or do short exercises to reduce pain during surgery, and the body areas most affected are the back (61.6%), neck (40.6%) and shoulders (37.8%).ConclusionDespite this, our survey allows us to highlight some now-known gaps present in the surgical training program of our schools and the lack of protection toward our surgeons during their long career.

Embedding of large but redundant data, such as images or text, in a hierarchy of lower-dimensional spaces is one of the key features of representation learning approaches, which nowadays provide state-of-the-art solutions to problems once believed hard or impossible to solve. In this work, in a plot twist with a strong meta aftertaste, we show how trained deep models are as redundant as the data they are optimized to process, and how it is therefore possible to use deep learning models to embed deep learning models. In particular, we show that it is possible to use representation learning to learn a fixed-size, low-dimensional embedding space of trained deep models and that such space can be explored by interpolation or optimization to attain ready-to-use models. We find that it is possible to learn an embedding space of multiple instances of the same architecture and of multiple architectures. We address image classification and neural representation of signals, showing how our embedding space can be learnt so as to capture the notions of performance and 3D shape, respectively. In the Multi-Architecture setting we also show how an embedding trained only on a subset of architectures can learn to generate already-trained instances of architectures it never sees instantiated at training time., Comment: Accepted at ICPR2022

V392 Persei is a known dwarf nova (DN) that underwent a classical nova eruption in 2018. Here we report ground-based optical, Swift UV and X-ray, and Fermi-LAT \gamma-ray observations following the eruption for almost three years. V392 Per is one of the fastest evolving novae yet observed, with a $t_2$ decline time of 2 days. Early spectra present evidence for multiple and interacting mass ejections, with the associated shocks driving both the \gamma-ray and early optical luminosity. V392 Per entered Sun-constraint within days of eruption. Upon exit, the nova had evolved to the nebular phase, and we saw the tail of the super-soft X-ray phase. Subsequent optical emission captured the fading ejecta alongside a persistent narrow line emission spectrum from the accretion disk. Ongoing hard X-ray emission is characteristic of a standing accretion shock in an intermediate polar. Analysis of the optical data reveals an orbital period of 3.230 \pm 0.003 days, but we see no evidence for a white dwarf (WD) spin period. The optical and X-ray data suggest a high mass WD, the pre-nova spectral energy distribution (SED) indicates an evolved donor, and the post-nova SED points to a high mass accretion rate. Following eruption, the system has remained in a nova-like high mass transfer state, rather than returning to the pre-nova DN low mass transfer configuration. We suggest that this high state is driven by irradiation of the donor by the nova eruption. In many ways, V392 Per shows similarity to the well-studied nova and DN GK Persei., Comment: Accepted by MNRAS. 20 pages including references, with 37 pages of supplementary material

Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena ,High Energy Physics - Experiment - Abstract
Super-Kamiokande has been searching for neutrino bursts characteristic of core-collapse supernovae continuously, in real time, since the start of operations in 1996. The present work focuses on detecting more distant supernovae whose event rate may be too small to trigger in real time, but may be identified using an offline approach. The analysis of data collected from 2008 to 2018 found no evidence of distant supernovae bursts. This establishes an upper limit of 0.29 year$^{-1}$ on the rate of core-collapse supernovae out to 100 kpc at 90% C.L.. For supernovae that fail to explode and collapse directly to black holes the limit reaches to 300 kpc.

High Energy Physics - Experiment ,Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena ,Physics - Instrumentation and Detectors - Abstract
In 2020, the Super-Kamiokande (SK) experiment moved to a new stage (SK-Gd) in which gadolinium (Gd) sulfate octahydrate was added to the water in the detector, enhancing the efficiency to detect thermal neutrons and consequently improving the sensitivity to low energy electron anti-neutrinos from inverse beta decay (IBD) interactions. SK-Gd has the potential to provide early alerts of incipient core-collapse supernovae through detection of electron anti-neutrinos from thermal and nuclear processes responsible for the cooling of massive stars before the gravitational collapse of their cores. These pre-supernova neutrinos emitted during the silicon burning phase can exceed the energy threshold for IBD reactions. We present the sensitivity of SK-Gd to pre-supernova stars and the techniques used for the development of a pre-supernova alarm based on the detection of these neutrinos in SK, as well as prospects for future SK-Gd phases with higher concentrations of Gd. For the current SK-Gd phase, high-confidence alerts for Betelgeuse could be issued up to nine hours in advance of the core-collapse itself., Comment: 20 pages

- Abstract
Background: Because of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Italy, control measures were adopted, such as closure of schools, universities, workplaces, and subsequently lockdown, so everyone's life changed. This is associated with psychological disorders in general public and in particular on students. Objective: To evaluate validity and reliability of the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) in the assessment of perceived stress of Italian students after the lifestyle changes due to the outbreak of COVID-19. Study Design: Cross-sectional study. Methods: A mailing list was used for the recruitment of students. Internal consistency was examined through Cronbach's Alpha Coefficient; Criterion validity was evaluated comparing PSS scores to SF-12 values, and Pearson Correlation. Coefficient (PCC) was calculated. Correlation analyses were also used to investigate Cross-cultural validity. Results: The PSS scale was administered to 400 medical and health professionals' students in July 2020. Alpha Coefficient's value was statistically significant, and correlation with the SF-12 health survey was good (p<0,01). A correlation was found between Perceived Stress and gender, BMI, and also between PSS scores and time spent sitting and exercising under pandemic. Conclusions: The Italian version of PSS scale is a valid and reliable instrument to assess Perceived Stress among medical and health professionals' students. [For the full proceedings, see ED621108.]

Non-Standard Interactions (NSI) between neutrinos and matter affect the neutrino flavor oscillations. Due to the high matter density in the core of the Sun, solar neutrinos are suited to probe these interactions. Using the $277$ kton-yr exposure of Super-Kamiokande to $^{8}$B solar neutrinos, we search for the presence of NSI. Our data favors the presence of NSI with down quarks at 1.8$\sigma$, and with up quarks at 1.6$\sigma$, with the best fit NSI parameters being ($\epsilon_{11}^{d},\epsilon_{12}^{d}$) = (-3.3, -3.1) for $d$-quarks and ($\epsilon_{11}^{u},\epsilon_{12}^{u}$) = (-2.5, -3.1) for $u$-quarks. After combining with data from the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory and Borexino, the significance increases by 0.1$\sigma$., Comment: Author: Pierce Weatherly 25 pages. Diffractive optical neural networks have shown promising advantages over electronic circuits for accelerating modern machine learning (ML) algorithms. However, it is challenging to achieve fully programmable all-optical implementation and rapid hardware deployment. Furthermore, understanding the threat of adversarial ML in such system becomes crucial for real-world applications, which remains unexplored. Here, we demonstrate a large-scale, cost-effective, complex-valued, and reconfigurable diffractive all-optical neural networks system in the visible range based on cascaded transmissive twisted nematic liquid crystal spatial light modulators. With the assist of categorical reparameterization, we create a physics-aware training framework for the fast and accurate deployment of computer-trained models onto optical hardware. Furthermore, we theoretically analyze and experimentally demonstrate physics-aware adversarial attacks onto the system, which are generated from a complex-valued gradient-based algorithm. The detailed adversarial robustness comparison with conventional multiple layer perceptrons and convolutional neural networks features a distinct statistical adversarial property in diffractive optical neural networks. Our full stack of software and hardware provides new opportunities of employing diffractive optics in a variety of ML tasks and enabling the research on optical adversarial ML., Comment: 34 pages, 4 figures

143. Perceptions of District Leaders' Support for Pupil Personnel Service Leaders in Special Education
- Author

Jillaine A. Berardi
- Abstract
The purpose of this phenomenological, qualitative study was to investigate how district leaders' support is perceived by district pupil personnel service (PPS) leaders in the areas of ethical leadership, district policies and practices for special education programs, and how that may contribute to a culture of inclusivity. One on one interviews were conducted with 14 system leaders for PPS in three Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES) regions in New York State. The overall findings provide details about an inclusive culture within each district; policies and practices that support a culture of ongoing professional learning for PPS leaders, principals, and instructional staff; insight about the ethical beliefs and actions of district leaders; providing opportunities for mentoring and collaboration for PPS leaders; and finally, knowledge about the ethical beliefs and actions of district leaders in providing access to human, time, and material resources for special education programs. Several recommendations came from this research. There were two recommendations for policy and three recommendations for practice. Recommendations for policy includes the focus of local boards of education to adopt explicit goals, language and implementation of elements of inclusivity and specific policies regarding DEI practices as it pertains to special education programs. Recommendations for practice encourage inclusivity for students, staff, administration and families through intentional approaches for district initiatives such as an intentional professional development plan and collaborative budget planning, where all leaders are involved in the strategic planning. - Abstract
Objective: Determine the temporal and spatial characteristics of stairs versus elevator use in a university residence hall to inform future physical activity promotion efforts. Participants: All residents and visitors for a single, four-story residence hall dormitory building located on a college campus in Orange, CA. Methods: Smart mat systems capable of detecting pedestrian traffic were placed in front of the stairs and elevators on each floor plus a basement. Generalized additive mixed models (GAMMs) were used to compare stair versus elevator usage at different times of the day and on different floors. Results: Stair versus elevator use varied much more throughout the day on floors nearest to the ground floor, with stair use most common in the morning. Overall, the elevator was used more frequently on higher floors, with less variation throughout the day. Conclusion: To be most effective, future stair promotion interventions should target residents on higher floors and in the morning.

- Abstract
This article explores the motivation of non-Maori learners of te reo Maori as an L2. Inspired by calls for contextualised investigations of the L2 motivation of learners of LOTEs, our study utilises an "ethical self-formation framework" [Hennig, B. B. 2010a. "Language Learning and the Self: Exploring Hong Kong Students' Motivation for Learning German as a Third Language from a Foucauldian Ethical Perspective." Doctoral diss., University of Hong Kong. https://bibliography.lib.eduhk.hk/tc/bibs/fdb173c8] to analyse data from semi-structured interviews with 10 learners enrolled in a voluntary course of Maori language for staff at a New Zealand university. Through a discussion of findings associated with three of the framework's axes ("ethical substance, mode of subjection and telos"), we offer an interpretation of the learners' L2 motivation as linked to a self-directed process aimed at achieving an improved version of themselves, and of this process of self-formation as rooted in personal belief systems about the value of te reo Maori in their personal and professional lives and for New Zealand as a whole. Overall, the ethical self-formation framework emerges as a useful lens for highlighting the links between the learners' L2 motivation, their personal connections with te reo Maori and their sense of membership in an ideal collective New Zealand identity, and for exploring dimensions of the convergence of the personal and the societal in L2 motivation.

- Abstract
Many Italian universities had numerous students attending hospital wards during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. The training of healthcare professionals and students was necessary to facilitate good practices, disseminate knowledge about COVID-19, and minimize contagion among students who were completing internships. On 28 February 2020, the Italian National Institute of Health (NIH) created a course that aimed to guide healthcare personnel so that they can appropriately address the health emergency due to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), making use of the available scientific evidence and official sources of information and updates. The purpose of this paper was to describe the method used by the Sapienza University of Rome in delivering the Italian NIH course for health professions students at Italian universities. The research group in charge of delivering the course decided to use the Google Classroom platform. Since 1 April, 80 classes have been created, and currently, 15000 students from 28 health professions bachelor's and master's degree programs and 43 universities around Italy are attending the course. A total of 13000 students have completed the final test. This paper represents a clear advantage in the field of e-learning, not only because it describes an effective method for delivering a course to many students but also because it demonstrates how health professions students can be protected while allowing them to continue or restart internships in health facilities more safely and with more awareness. Radioactivity induced by cosmic muon spallation is a dominant source of backgrounds for $\mathcal{O}(10)~$MeV neutrino interactions in water Cherenkov detectors. In particular, it is crucial to reduce backgrounds to measure the solar neutrino spectrum and find neutrino interactions from distant supernovae. In this paper we introduce new techniques to locate muon-induced hadronic showers and efficiently reject spallation backgrounds. Applying these techniques to the solar neutrino analysis with an exposure of $2790\times22.5$~kton.day increases the signal efficiency by $12.6\%$, approximately corresponding to an additional year of detector running. Furthermore, we present the first spallation simulation at SK, where we model hadronic interactions using FLUKA. The agreement between the isotope yields and shower pattern in this simulation and in the data gives confidence in the accuracy of this simulation, and thus opens the door to use it to optimize muon spallation removal in new data with gadolinium-enhanced neutron capture detection.

High Energy Physics - Experiment - Abstract
The TOTEM collaboration at the CERN LHC has measured the differential cross-section of elastic proton-proton scattering at $\sqrt{s} = 8\ {\rm TeV}$ in the squared four-momentum transfer range $0.2\ {\rm GeV^{2}} < |t| < 1.9\ {\rm GeV^{2}}$. This interval includes the structure with a diffractive minimum ("dip") and a secondary maximum ("bump") that has also been observed at all other LHC energies, where measurements were made. A detailed characterisation of this structure for $\sqrt{s} = 8\ {\rm TeV}$ yields the positions, $|t|_{\rm dip} = (0.521 \pm 0.007)\ {\rm GeV^2}$ and $|t|_{\rm bump} = (0.695 \pm 0.026)\ {\rm GeV^2}$, as well as the cross-section values, ${{\rm d}\sigma/{\rm d} t}_{\rm dip} = (15.1 \pm 2.5)\ {\rm{\mu b/GeV^2}}$ and ${{\rm d}\sigma/{\rm d} t}_{\rm bump} = (29.7 \pm 1.8)\ {\rm{\mu b/GeV^2}}$, for the dip and the bump, respectively.
