The purpose of this paper is to study the existence of periodic solutions and the topological structure of the solution set of first-order differential equations involving the distributional Henstock–Kurzweil integral. The distributional Henstock–Kurzweil integral is a general integral, which includes the Lebesgue and Henstock–Kurzweil integrals. By using previous results of Djafari Rouhani for non-expansive sequences in Refs (Djafari Rouhani, Ergodic theorems for nonexpansive sequences in Hilbert spaces and related problems, Ph.D. Thesis, Yale University, Part I (1981), pp. 1–76; Djafari Rouhani, J. Math. Anal. Appl. 147 (1990), pp. 465–476; Djafari Rouhani, J. Math. Anal. Appl. 151 (1990), pp. 226–235), we study the existence and asymptotic behaviour of solutions to first-order as well as second-order difference equations of monotone type with periodic forcing. In the first-order case, our result extends to general maximal monotone operators, the discrete analogue of a result of Baillon and Haraux (Rat. Mech. Anal. 67 (1977), 101–109) proved for subdifferential operators. In the second-order case, our results extend among other things, previous results of Apreutesei (J. Math. Anal. Appl. 288 (2003), 833–851) to the non-homogeneous case, and show the asymptotic convergence of every bounded solution to a periodic solution. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

In this paper, we investigate the long-term behaviour of solutions of the periodic Sigmoid Beverton–Holt equation where the a n and δ n are p-periodic positive sequences. Under certain conditions, there are shown to exist an asymptotically stable p-periodic state and a p-periodic Allee state with the property that populations smaller than the Allee state are driven to extinction while populations greater than the Allee state approach the stable state, thus accounting for the long-term behaviour of all initial states. This appears to be the first study of the equation with variable δ. We consider a deterministic intra-host model for Plasmodium falciparum (Pf) malaria infection, which accounts for antigenic variation between n clonal variants of PfEMP1 and the corresponding host immune response (IR). Specifically, the model separates the IR into two components, specific and cross-reactive, respectively, in order to demonstrate that the latter can be a mechanism for the sequential appearance of variants observed in actual Pf infections. We show that a strong variant-specific IR relative to the cross-reactive IR favours the asynchronous oscillations (sequential dominance) over the synchronous oscillations in a number of ways. The decay rate of asynchronous oscillations is smaller than that for the synchronous oscillations, allowing for the parasite to survive longer. With the introduction of a delay in the stimulation of the IR, we show that only a small delay is necessary to cause persistent asynchronous oscillations and that a strong variant-specific IR increases the amplitude of the asynchronous oscillations. Our aim in this paper is to investigate the boundedness, the extreme stability, and the periodicity of positive solutions of the periodically forced Sigmoid Beverton–Holt model: where {a n } is a positive periodic sequence with period p and δ>0. In the special case when δ=1, the above equation reduces to the well-known periodic Pielou logistic equation which is known to be equivalent to the periodically forced Beverton–Holt model. In the present paper, a class of fourth-order nonlinear difference equations with Dirichlet boundary conditions or periodic boundary conditions are considered. Based on the invariant sets of descending flow in combination with the mountain pass lemma, we establish a series of sufficient conditions on the existence of multiple solutions for these boundary value problems.
