Recently, the influence of subsurface dams on solute transport in coastal aquifers has become a hot research topic. Although many studies have been conducted, the combined effects of subsurface dam and tides on variable-density solute transport remain unclear, and this study aimed to fill this research gap. In the current study, a numerical model representing a 2-D cross-shore coastal aquifer was established. The model simulated cases with and without a subsurface dam, and sensitivity analysis cases with different height and location of the subsurface dam and solute concentration. The results show that a subsurface dam blocks a portion of the solute plume, which can only be discharged by dilution at the edges, thereby altering its discharge pattern and reducing their discharge rate. The addition of a subsurface dam may either prolong or shorten the residence time of solute,depending on the location rather than the height of the subsurface dam. In particular, a more landward subsurface dam would significantly increase the residence time; sensitivity analysis demonstrates that both the landward shift and the height increase of the subsurface dam contribute to a heightened ratio of dynamic mass distribution for the solute plume within the freshwater and saltwater zones of the aquifer, with maximum changes in mass distribution ratios of 87.22% and 300%, respectively. Also, these factors cause the solute to migrate both seaward and landward, respectively, across the primary outflow regions of the aquifer-ocean interface. Results from this study may provide theoretical guidance for the optimal design and environmental impact assessment of subsurface dams.

A better understanding of the distribution of nonaqueous phase liquid (NAPL) plumes is of great importance to groundwater pollution remediation and control. However, the efficiency of surrogate models in simulating the transport is still not well addressed. Selecting a leakage problem as an example, 50 sets of random permeability distributions are generated using the Monte Carlo method, and a numerical model is used to obtain benchmark data of NAPL transport. Four machine learning methods are employed to simulate dense NAPL transport under point leakage sources across spatiotemporal scales. The validation of the models demonstrate that the random forest model can also effectively capture the spatial-temporal distribution of the plume in heterogeneous aquifers, with a maximum mean absolute error and root mean square error smaller than 5.55 × 10−4 and 5.88 × 10−5, respectively. Meanwhile, the multiple phase outcome from the random forest model fits well with the numerical results under the scenarios of linear leakage sources and light NAPL transport. The total time consumed in the computation is reduced by over 150 times after using the surrogate models. The results suggest that surrogate models can provide a promising way to understand NAPL transport in heterogeneous aquifers. Around 40% of the world’s population depends on coastal aquifers for freshwater supply but natural and anthropogenic drivers threaten groundwater availability. Of these drivers, saltwater intrusion (SWI) is one of the most critical and is increasingly affecting coastal areas worldwide. Interest in coastal aquifers has significantly increased, as demonstrated by the growing number of publications in which researchers describe various approaches to illuminate the importance of coastal aquifers, specifically with regard to SWI. The state of research and knowledge of the coastal SWI issue has been reviewed herein. The review includes a discussion of select geophysical and field methods and tools which can inform the numerical modeling of coastal aquifers. MODFLOW was identified as the most often used numerical modeling platform. Further, while many research sites, particularly in the United States, were identified where field studies and geophysical methods, mostly geoelectric ones, added important value to the numerical modeling of the SWI process in the coastal zone, in some regions of the world, data scarcity was identified as the main challenge. Overall, numerical modeling, combined with geophysical methods, is a valuable tool for studying SWI and managing coastal water resources.

The study implemented Geographic Information System (GIS) techniques and multivariate hydrogeochemical analysis to evaluate the spatial-temporal and seasonal variation in the groundwater quality of Patna, India. For this purpose, sixty groundwater samples were collected and analyzed for major anions and cations during the pre-monsoon, monsoon, and post-monsoon seasons of 2019-2020. The physicochemical parameters such as pH, EC (Electrical Conductivity), TDS (Total Dissolved Solids), TH (Total Hardness), Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, K+, HCO3-, Cl-, SO42- were considered to evaluate the water quality index. The result revealed degradation in groundwater quality from pre-monsoon (49.21) to post-monsoon (74.48). EC, TDS, TH, Mg2+, Na+, Ca2+, K+, and HCO3- ions were found accountable for high WQI values at various sampling sites during different seasons. Spatial maps showed that 45 % of the sampling stations exhibited poor quality in all three seasons, where the eastern part of the studied region was revealed to be the most affected area. The application of multivariate statistical methods and hydrogeochemical investigation has clearly defined the dominant role of the weathering process, and reverse ion exchange mechanism in controlling the aquifer’s ionic chemistry. Moreover, poor seepage system, and waste leachate from the surface have been found as the main cause of high levels of Na+, K+, and Cl- in the eastern part of Patna.

Abstract Little is known about biological processes controlling inorganic phosphate (PO4) in groundwater ecosystems. Here we present analyses of groundwater samples from the Hetao Basin, China that show an increasing contribution of microbial cycling to groundwater PO4 from oxic to anoxic conditions along a flow path with phosphate-bound oxygen isotopes (δ18OPO4). Under oxic conditions, although 25–47% of the dissolved PO4 inherited the initial source signal of igneous apatite, groundwater δ18OPO4 reflected a pronounced impact of intracellular enzymatic cycling. Under anoxic conditions, dissolved PO4 carried a nearly exclusive equilibrium isotope signal, which was probably due to (i) release of PO4 with an equilibrium δ18OPO4 from Fe(III) oxides, as a result of Fe(III) reduction in the presence of Fe(III)- and sulfate-reducing bacteria; and/or (ii) cumulative microbial cycling of dissolved PO4 with increasing groundwater residence time. Our study highlights that PO4 in groundwater is tightly microbially cycled under a wide range of redox conditions and microbial cycling contributes to the release of PO4 in groundwater.

Objective The analytical solution model is computationally efficient and widely used to estimate aquifer surges. Analytical solution models are computationally efficient but involving many assumptions, such as that the aquifer is homogeneous, the amount of water pumped is constant, while the head loss in the well is ignored; these models are often referred to as homogeneous models. In fact, these assumptions are often not met, resulting in nonnegligible errors in the results, especially for heterogeneous giant thick aquifers.Meanwhile, the homogeneous model cannot estimate the permeability coefficient and water inflow of the broken zone, which is not conducive to solve the water problem during tunnel construction. Methods In this study, two pumping tests were carried out on the Shengli Tunnel Project in Tianshan Mountain, Xinjiang. A geological model was established based on comprehensive logging data and borehole data; a heterogeneous numerical simulation method was used to quantitatively investigate the amount of groundwater inflow in bore holes. The parameters in the rate determination model of the observation data of the first pumping test were used, and the rationality of the model and the postrate parameters were verified by the observation data of the second pumping test. Results The permeability coefficients of the fracture zone, intact granite and relatively intact granite were inverted and were 0.000 93 m/d, 0.000 5 m/d and 0.000 3 m/d, respectively. The total water inflow and the water inflow of the fracture zone were predicted to be 14.80 m3/h and 10.46 m3/h, respectively, of which the water inflow of the broken zone accounted for 70.676% of the total water consumption. Conclusion Field observations revealed head loss in aan ultradeepbore hole during pumping test. The heterogeneous numerical simulation model can explain the ultradeep hole pumping test data better than the homogeneous model, and the total water inflow calculated by the homogeneous model is 18.67 m3/h, which overestimates the water inflow. During tunnel construction, the hydrodynamic parameters and water inflow obtained by the heterogeneous model are more reliable.

Abstract Extreme precipitation periods, possibly related to climate change, over the Nile River source areas caused flooding in Sudan and excess runoff reaching Lake Nasser in Egypt in 1998–2002 and 2019–2022. Excess water from the 1st event (25.5 × 109 m3) was channeled to depressions within the plateau west of the Nile Valley, forming the Tushka Lakes, where it was left to evaporate, a fate that awaits the 53.5 × 109 m3 from the 2nd event while the underlying fossil Nubian Sandstone Aquifer System is being depleted (−0.98 × 109 m3/yr). We simulated release scenarios of excess Lake Nasser waters (53.5 × 109 m3) to proximal lowlands; preference was given to the scenario that recharged the aquifer through infiltration (74.3%) and minimized losses to evaporation (20.1%) and surface runoff (5.6%). Findings serve as an example of adaptations that replace catastrophic consequences of climate change with beneficial and sustainable development opportunities.

Water scarcity poses a significant challenge in arid and semi-arid regions, necessitating a focused exploration of groundwater resources. Egypt, confronted with various water challenges, particularly in its Western Desert, relies heavily on groundwater as the exclusive water source due to the presence of the Nubian Sandstone aquifer. Effective groundwater management in this region is imperative. This study delves into the hydrogeological characteristics of the Nubian Sandstone aquifer system (NSAS) in the prominent New Valley Oases—Kharga, Dakhla, and Farafra—where agricultural activities heavily depend on groundwater. The primary objective entails a meticulous temporal assessment of the impact of groundwater development on aquifer behavior, groundwater levels, and drawdown. Employing a remote sensing approach, agricultural expansion from 1995 to 2020 was scrutinized. The Visual MODFLOW package served as a robust tool for simulating groundwater flow in the study areas. Noteworthy findings reveal an upward trajectory in agricultural crop areas, escalating by approximately 6% from 1740 km² in 1995 to 1850 km² in 2020. Concurrently, drawdown, influenced by current groundwater extraction, is anticipated to range from 0.5 to 5 meters per year. To ensure the sustainable development of these areas, stringent regulations must be implemented, underscoring the imperative for judicious groundwater management practices. This research underscores the critical need for informed decision-making and proactive measures to address the evolving dynamics of groundwater resources in the New Valley Oases.

Selection of the proper underground hydrogen storage (UHS) site is an essential issue for zero-emission systems based on renewables. The article presents the method for assessing storage traps in saline aquifers and the ranking of storage traps in saline aquifers from the Polish Lowlands for UHS. The ranking was based on the multi-criteria approach of the hierarchical analysis of the decision-making process. The best UHS site was determined based on geological and reservoir criteria. The criteria weights were evaluated using two methods for comparative purposes. The parameters of individual storage traps came from the database developed in the Hystories project. The highest positions in the ranking were obtained by storage traps characterized by the best sealing parameters of caprock, lack of faults within the traps, and good permeability of the reservoir layers. The presented ranking approach can support the decision-making process for selecting UHS sites in other countries. • Multi-criteria decision analysis was used to develop the ranking of storage traps. • The method was applied for pre-selection of UHS sites in deep aquifers in Poland. • The workflow was developed for the ranking of storage traps in deep aquifers. • The role of criteria weights in the ranking of storage traps was presented. • The method can be used for pre-selection of storage traps in aquifers worldwide. Underground hydrogen storage (UHS) has been considered as an integral part of energy transition from fossil fuels to renewable sources. Porous aquifers can serve as typical sites for this purpose due to their worldwide distribution and huge storage capacity. However, the diverse microbial species that inhabit the aquifers are known to be able to catalyze in-situ biochemical reactions within the hosting rock. These reactions can normally lead to microbial consumption of hydrogen, microbial clogging of pore space and thus affect hydrogen injection and withdrawal rates as reported in the literature. So far, these phenomena have been widely reported but rarely quantified. In this study, we build a coupled hydrological-mechanical-chemical-biological (HMCB) multiphysics model to simulate these microbe-related processes during UHS in aquifers. The model consists of a complete set of partial differential equations to describe: (1) rock deformation; (2) water-hydrogen two-phase flow; (3) microbes and dissolved hydrogen transport; (4) mineral dissolution/precipitation; and (5) microbial activities involving adsorption/desorption and growth/decay. All these processes are linked together through the porosity/permeability models which consider the joint impacts of microbial clogging, mineral dissolution/precipitation and effective stress. This multiphysics model is verified against laboratory biochemical reaction data and microbial transport data. Then, the verified model is used to investigate the impacts of iron-reduction bacteria (IRB) activities on UHS in aquifers. Based on the simulation results, it can be concluded that (1) hydrogen saturation at the top surface of the aquifer is the greatest while microbial activities surrounding the injection well is stimulated the most; (2) microbial activities influence the initial few cycles of hydrogen injection and withdrawal but the impacts gradually diminish with the dissolution of Fe 2 O 3 ; (3) hydrogen recovery efficiency is degraded due to the combined effects of hydrogen consumption, water production and microbial clogging with the microbial clogging impact being the most significant; and (4) effective stress impacts aquifer permeability throughout UHS operations while microbial clogging influences it in the initial few cycles. Coastal aquifers with high hydraulic conductivities on the order of 10−2 m s−1 have unconventional salinity distributions with the presence of non‐fresh groundwater at the water table over a wide swath near the coast. This study aims to unravel the mechanisms underlying the phenomenon via numerical simulations for variably saturated, density‐driven flow and solute transport in porous media. The simulation results indicate that the existence of non‐fresh groundwater at the water table is attributed to the upward mass flux in the saturated zone near the coast, which transports solute from deeper groundwater toward the water table. With high hydraulic conductivity, the upward mass flux becomes prominent at shallower elevations because of the high Darcy flux and the shallow saline groundwater. The upward mass flux has two main drivers, upward advection by the upward flow component and transverse dispersion by the seaward flow component. The advective mass flux dominates over the transverse dispersion in the deep part of the saturated zone where only groundwater with sea water salinity exists. In contrast, the transverse dispersion becomes more pronounced than the upward advection in the shallow saturated zone just beneath the water table and in the unsaturated zone immediately above the water table. Our findings help interpret the unconventional salinity distributions observed and elucidate the unique dynamics of groundwater flow and solute transport in highly permeable coastal aquifers. Abstract Recent observations revealed the existence of ice slabs and aquifers on the Greenland ice sheet (GrIS). Both affect the ice sheet's hydrology: ice slabs facilitate runoff and aquifers modulate drainage to the bed. However, their climatic drivers and history remain unclear, as most observations cover only two decades. Here, we present a model simulation of the evolution of GrIS ice slabs and aquifers (1980–2020), evaluated using radar measurements. The results show that accumulation, melt and rain rates are good predictors for the spatial distribution of ice slabs and aquifers. Both features were already present in the late 1980s, and their extent remained relatively constant until the beginning of this century, after which increased melt led to their expansion. We show that almost any transect from the coast to the ice‐sheet interior will cross either an ice slab region, or an aquifer, or both.

Finding drinking water in a Precambrian (Pan-African) basement context is a major concern for many Central African countries. For example, most groundwater is in fissured or fractured basement aquifers. To enhance the success rate of boreholes, this study aims to identify the features and the geographic reach of the lineament directions likely to drain groundwater. The research area has a size of 23 045 km2, is 120 km from Yaoundé, Cameroon, and is located there. The methodological approach integrates current borehole and outcrop data with spatial data (Landsat-8 OLI/SRTM and gravity). The main NE-SW (N20–70°E), E-W (N80–100°E), and secondary N–S (N0–20°E) and NW-SE (N120–140°E) fracture directions display on the generated structural lineament map. The Pan-African orogeny is linked to the E-W direction, and the Sanaga Fault is related to the NE-SW direction. The other directions (N–S and NW-SE) correspond to the post-collisional decompression phase. This study locates medium-flow boreholes on or near the NE-SW, E-W, and NW-SE trending fractures, hence enhancing the knowledge of fissured and fractured basement aquifers in the Central region of Cameroon. The corresponding water flow rates range from 1 to 3 m3/h as well. The extensive exploration of fractured bedrock aquifers can benefit from these findings.
