The author reflects on a federal government report that found one out of seven Americans cannot read and understand anything more complex than a child's picture book. He believes the inherent inconsistencies of the English language are, in part, to blame for this situation. The author emphasizes that people in other countries have trouble translating things into proper English but goes on to illustrate how the language can be forgiving once one has mastered it.
