There is a 240-year tradition of compulsory school attendance in the Czech Republic. To many, compulsory school attendance is synonymous with the right to be educated. After the collapse of communism in 1989, along with the democratization of the government, the education system was slowly opened to alternatives, including the right to educate children at home, expressed in Act no. 561/2004. This inclusive law has had exclusionary consequences for many families who wish to choose this mode of education. The situation reveals a clear struggle over various forms of capital in the field of education, as famously described by Bourdieu (1998). The article, based on a longitudinal ethnographic study of homeschooling families, maps the structural discriminative dimension of the law and displays the strategies that the actors have adopted in order to combat them.

With the rapid growth of K-12 online learning opportunities, calls have come for more and better parental engagement to improve student engagement and reduce student attrition. In this article, we drew from a larger study to share rich narratives from three parents of students who required high levels of parental support for their online learning while enrolled at a charter cyber school. In the first narrative, a mother describes her experiences attempting to work with her son Ivan, who rejected her efforts and disobeyed rules while enrolled in the cyber school. The move from a brick-and-mortar school to the cyber school further strained their relationship and the mother was unprepared to manage Ivan’s learning. The second narrative focuses on how a mother attempted to support Matthew, who lacked self-regulation abilities. The mother who previously homeschooled Matthew, turned to the cyber school because she wanted “less on [her] shoulders” but underestimated the amount of support Matthew required and became frustrated at her lack of control over the pace and content of courses. The final narrative focuses on a mother who had two students enrolled in the cyber school. Each student exhibited different needs that required her to adapt the support strategies she used with Hannah, who procrastinated, and Karl, who lacked confidence. These narratives highlight some of the complexities parents navigate when engaging with their children’s online learning.

Desconocida aún para muchos juristas, la modalidad educativa de la educación en casa amenaza con convertirse en un nuevo punto de fricción entre padres y Estado en la siempre controvertida cuestión de la educación de los menores de edad en nuestro país. El propósito de este trabajo es el de ofrecer al lector una primera toma de contacto con la dimensión jurídica del homeschooling, desde su resurgir en la segunda mitad del siglo XX hasta su actual situación legal en España a partir de la sentencia del Tribunal Constitucional de 2 de diciembre de 2010, pasando por una breve reflexión en torno al modo en que el Tribunal Europeo de Derechos Humanos ha abordado esta cuestión. The purpose of this paper is to present readers with a preliminary approach to the legal dimension of homeschooling, from its resurgence in the second half of the 20th century to its current legal status in Spain after the December 2201 O judgment by the Spanish Constitutional Court, stopping briefly to reference how the Strasbourg Court of Human Rights has tackled this particular issue. Ce mémoire a été réalisé à la suite d’interrogations sur le choix, les raisons et l’organisation des familles pratiquant l’école à domicile. Lors de ce projet, je me suis intéressée plus spécifiquement à l’activité physique des homeschoolers. Chaque année dans le canton de Vaud, de nouvelles familles choisissent cette alternative à l’école publique. À la rentrée 2018, plus de 500 enfants suivaient ce mode d’éducation. J’ai alors formulé ma question de recherche : « Estce que les enfants, âgés entre 6 à 12 ans et suivant l’école à domicile, pratiquent une activité physique suffisante (60 minutes quotidiennes prescrites par l’OMS), en comparaison avec les élèves de l’école publique ? » Dans ce mémoire, les concepts de Homeschooling (école à la maison) et d’Activité physique ont été définis. Le terme homeschooling est apparu dans les pays anglo-saxons. En Suisse, la législation autorisant la pratique de ce mode d’éducation, est différente selon les cantons. Des inspecteurs visitent les familles de homeschoolers au minimum une fois par année pour vérifier leur organisation et le suivi des apprentissages des enfants. L’éducation physique et sportive est une branche importante de l’école traditionnelle, car elle vise également la socialisation des enfants. De plus, l’âge de 6 à 12 ans, est primordial pour le développement des capacités physiques des individus. Au travers de cette recherche, deux populations participantes, 10 homeschoolers et 10 écoliers, âgés entre 6 et 12 ans, ont accepté de porter un podomètre pendant une semaine, de remplir un journal de bord, ainsi que de répondre à un questionnaire (IPAQ). Les différentes données obtenues ont permis de comparer la quantité, l’intensité et la diversité de l’activité physique. De plus, des entretiens retranscrits, puis analysés dans une grille thématique, ont été menés afin de compléter les résultats. L’analyse de ces résultats a conduit à la mise en évidence des différences et des similitudes entre l’activité physique et sportive des homeschoolers et celle des écoliers.

Les intervenants scolaires mandatés pour le suivi de la scolarisation à la maison sont placés au carrefour de conflits normatifs, politiques et pédagogiques. Ils les résolvent par diverses stratégies: l’intercompréhension, l’acceptation du désaccord, la recherche de l’intérêt de l’enfant et l’ingéniosité, mais aussi la négligence, l’abus de pouvoir, la protection de leur professionnalité, le caractère incontestable de leur jugement et la méfiance. La théorie de la gouvernance réflexive propose une approche de formation génétique pour soutenir la participation de ce type d’acteur à la réflexivité institutionnelle plutôt qu’à une forme de résistance. Les intervenants de quatre commissions scolaires québécoises ont participé à une démarche de recherche-formation visant à mieux comprendre le processus d’apprentissage de la participation à la réflexivité institutionnelle. Au terme de la démarche, les participants ont réalisé des apprentissages pragmatiques et des apprentissages génétiques, passant d’une posture d’intervenants mandataires à celle d’agents de changement. They solve them by various practices: mutual understanding, agreement on disagreement, search for the child's interest and creativity, but also, negligence, abuse of power, protection of their professionality, incontestability and distrust. The reflexive governance theory offers a genetic training approach in order to support local actors’ participation ininstitutional reflexivity rather than to a form of resistance. Homeschooling supervisors from four Quebec school boards participated in a research-training process aimed, on the one hand, at experimenting an accompanied self-training framework; on the other hand, at modeling the learning process of participation in institutional reflexivity. At the end of the process, participants realized pragmatic learning and genetic learning, having shifted from a mandated executant posture to that of change agent. The learning process components and their conditions of success are described., Los tutores escolares encargados de hacer el seguimiento de la escolarización en casa de ciertos alumnos se encuentran en la encrucijada de conflictos normativos, políticos y pedagógicos. Estos conflictos son resueltos a través de varias estrategias: la intercomprensión, la aceptación de la disconformidad, la búsqueda del interés del alumno y el ingenio; sin embargo, también se usan otras estrategias, tales como la negligencia, el abuso de poder, la protección de su profesionalismo, la incontestabilidad y la desconfianza. La teoría de la gobernanza reflexiva propone un enfoque de formación genética para apoyar la participación de este tipo de actor a la reflexividad institucional, en lugar de desarrollar una forma de resistencia. Los tutores de cuatro comisiones escolares quebequenses participaron a un proceso de investigación-formación que se interesaba en comprender mejor el proceso de aprendizaje de la participación a la reflexividad institucional. Al final del proceso, los participantes desarrollaron aprendizajes pragmáticos y genéticos, pasando de una posición de tutor mandatario a una de agentes de cambio.
