It is shown that the enhanced Raman spectra of pyridine adsorbed on Fe can be obtained by depositing thin films of Fe onto roughened Ag substrates. An alternative strategy of inducing enhanced scattering is also explored which relies on the deposition of a low density of small growth centres of Ag on Fe by simple displacement reaction followed by dissolution of the smooth substrate; this procedure gives electrodes which show spectra both of Ag and/or Fe depending on the position of illumination.
