Isolated enterocytes from rat small intestine were characterized for their specific binding of epidermal growth factor (EGF). Intestinal epithelial cells were isolated at 4 degrees C to minimize the loss of receptor sites during the isolation procedure. 125I-labelled EGF binding to enterocytes from adult rats was found to be specific, saturable, temperature dependent and trypsin sensitive. Binding performed in the presence of a lysosomotropic agent (NH4Cl) increased the time required to reach maximal binding at 25 degrees C. NH4Cl had no significant effect on the time-course of EGF binding at 4 degrees C and 37 degrees C. A Scatchard plot showed a curvilinear relationship indicating that EGF binds to enterocytes with more than one binding site. Developmentally, enterocytes from fetuses and pups showed characteristic temperature dependence and trypsin sensitivity, but with different levels of binding to EGF. Specific EGF binding was demonstrably higher in enterocytes from small intestine of term fetuses. EGF binding to isolated enterocytes declined rapidly after birth, and the level stayed fairly constant thereafter. Pretreatment of enterocytes from fetal intestine with mature rat milk led to a dose-dependent decrease in EGF binding. These results suggest the presence of endogenous milk factors that modify EGF binding and account for, at least partly, the observed rapid decrease of EGF binding after birth.

The three-dimensional dynamic movement of the abutment tooth was successfully analyzed on a simulation model utilizing the mandibular kinesiography. When the unilateral free-end denture retained by the RPA, RPI or Aker's clasp was subjected to various directions of loads, the abutment tooth was inclined mainly by the sliding displacement of the denture over the alveolar ridge and the lever action around the denture. The Aker's clasp assembly induced the largest tooth movement. The RPA clasp generally exhibited similar tendencies to the Aker's clasp, showing a larger tooth inclination in the disto-buccal direction. The RPI clasp seemed to be preferable for protecting the periodontal tissues from damage associated with unfavorable tooth movements since it induced less distal tooth inclination.

An improved gauge using an eyeglass frame, the TOM gauge, was devised. The reproducibility of the record of vertical dimension with this gauge was evaluated through repeated measurements on subjects having a definite centric stop with the natural dentition. Because of the stabilization provided by the frame and the reference point on the apex nasi, the TOM gauge showed excellent reproducibility of the record compared with the conventional gauges. The TOM gauge can be expected to significantly reduce the risk of errors in measuring the vertical dimension of occlusion especially in complete denture fabrication.

Of the 26 patients with myasthenia gravis undergone thymectomy, 11 cases had either benign or malignant thymoma as judged not only by hitological examination but also by their clinical and operative findings. Age of initial onset ranged from 13 to 64 years old. Fifteen out of 26 (58 per cent) benefited from thymectomy. Duration of the symptom from the onset to the operation and the presence or absence of the thymoma are not related to their outcome. Benign or malignant nature of thymoma should not be determined by histological examination alone but by combined evaluation of clinical and operative findings. Serial studies of serum immunoglobulin levels before and after thymectomy suggested that this disorder could be associated with humoral antibody (IgG). HLA typing of the patients with myasthenia gravis did not indicate the presence of any specific antigens.

A 9-year-old boy having bronchial asthma showed fluctuation of his mental state for 14 days. EEG showed multiple spikes or irregular spike and wave complex bursts, the focus being in the left occipital region, and he was diagnosed as prolonged partial complex status epilepticus. Skull radiograms revealed the presence of radiolucent areas in the left parietal region and cerebral angiography showed a pear-shaped aneurysm and angioma in the distal part of the middle meningeal artery. Nontraumatic aneurysm of the middle meningeal artery has been rarely reported; only the reports on 2 old women with Paget disease are available now. The authors' case is the first child case.

The activities of several glycosidases (beta-galactosidase, beta-glucosidase, N-acetyl-beta-glucosaminidase) were demonstrated in human bile. The enzyme activities are increased about 100 times after exclusion of bile salts and other small molecular compounds by Sephadex G-50 gel filtration. The use of 4-methylumbelliferyl derivatives as substrates was useful as measurement of the bile enzyme activities are not altered in the presence of bile pigments. Enzyme characteristics of bile glycosidases were determined: pH optimum and isoelectric point. The bile glycosidase activities were also measured in various hepatobiliary disorders (cholelithiasis, cancer of gallbladder, acute hepatitis, liver cirrhosis and fatty liver). The glycosidase activities in bile from patients with liver diseases, as well as with cholelithiasis, were generally decreased. Isoelectric focusing patterns of biliary glycosidases were similar for specimens from patients with hepatobiliary disorders as compared to normal.
