Abstract

The book provides a rare glimpse into the daily routine at Fort Montgomery and Bemis Heights (Saratoga) from August 1776 to October, 1777. The book functions as a daily journal, containing "Morning Reports" (including lists of "Tories in confinement"), "Garrison Orders" given by Col. Cornelius Humphrey, and "General's Orders," given by Brigadier General James Clinton. These reports largely deal with issues involving the construction of defense preparations designed to enable the rebel army to "more effectually annoy the Enemies Shipping, should they attempt to come up the River." Other issues mentioned include several courts martial and problems with the tendencies of soldiers to fire their weapons when not in engaged in combat. (From the HHS finding aid by Eric Roth, 1998.)

On June 5, 1944, General Dwight Eisenhower, supreme Allied commander, Allied Expeditionary Force, issued an order of the day for the following day to all troops who were to participate in D-Day, the Allied invasion of the continent of Europe. Troops had been preparing for months to deliver a final blow to German forces that had occupied much of Western Europe during the previous four years. Filled with strong, exhortative language, Eisenhower's order aimed at building up the morale of the invasion force by pointing out the importance of the invasion to the Allied nations, to people under German rule, and to loved ones on the home front.

Abstract

In early 1865, Union general William Tecumseh Sherman, with the tacit approval of Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton and President Abraham Lincoln, issued a field order that radically redistributed some 400,000 acres of Confederate agricultural lands owned by rebelling Southerners to newly freed African Americans. Sherman had recently embarked upon his psychologically and militarily shattering March to the Sea across Georgia, and a great number of emancipated slaves followed on the heels of his conquering army. Special Field Order No. 15 thus served a number of purposes: it resettled these refugees so that the army no longer had to protect them; it punished rebels in the very heart of the Confederacy; and it provided a potentially enduring means of support for newly freed slaves. Although this promise of “forty acres and a mule” proved short-lived, it carried lasting implications for both the reconstructed South and for African Americans.

Abstract

General Orders No. 100 was a military order that instructed US army soldiers on the expected conduct during wartime. Dubbed the Lieber Code, the order was drafted by Francis Lieber and, upon approval by a group of senior Union Army officers, was promulgated to the military on behalf of President Abraham Lincoln. This set of orders prohibited the willful destruction of property, torture, and other forms of cruelty toward the enemy. It also called for soldiers to be respectful of noncombatants and unarmed captives and prohibited intentionally killing any prisoners of war. The Lieber Code, in essence, aimed to remove the aspects of revenge, cruelty, and savagery that often accompany war. These orders have since been adapted in other countries and remain highly relevant in the modern era.
