Abstract

We present the results of a weak gravitational lensing analysis to determine whether the stellar mass or else the velocity dispersion is more closely related to the amplitude of the lensing signal around galaxies, hence to the projected distribution of dark matter. The lensing signal on smaller scales than the virial radius corresponds most closely to the lensing velocity dispersion in the case of a singular isothermal profile, but is also sensitive on larger scales to the clustering of the haloes.We have selected over 4000 lens galaxies at a redshift z < 0.2 with concentrated (or bulge-dominated) surface brightness profiles from the ∼300 square degree overlap between the Red-sequence Cluster Survey 2 (RCS2) and the data release 7 (DR7) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS).We consider both the spectroscopic velocity dispersion and a model velocity dispersion (a combination of the stellar mass, the size, and the Sérsic index of a galaxy). Comparing the model and spectroscopic velocity dispersion we find that they correlate well for galaxies with concentrated brightness profiles. We find that the stellar mass and the spectroscopic velocity dispersion trace the amplitude of the lensing signal on small scales equally well. The model velocity dispersion, however, does significantly worse. A possible explanation is that the halo properties that determine the small-scale lensing signal - mainly the total mass - also depend on the structural parameters of galaxies, such as the effective radius and Sérsic index, but we lack data for a definitive conclusion. Abstract

We present new constraints on the relationship between galaxies and their host dark matter haloes, measured from the location of the peak of the stellar-to-halo mass ratio (SHMR), up to the most massive galaxy clusters at redshift z∼0.8 and over a volume of nearly 0.1Gpc3. We use a unique combination of deep observations in the CFHTLenS/VIPERS field from the near-UV to the near-IR, supplemented by ∼60 000 secure spectroscopic redshifts, analysing galaxy clustering, galaxy-galaxy lensing and the stellar mass function. We interpret our measurements within the halo occupation distribution (HOD) framework, separating the contributions from central and satellite galaxies. We find that the SHMR for the central galaxies peaks at $M_{\rm h, peak} = 1.9^{+0.2}_{-0.1}\times 10^{12}{\,{\rm M}_{{\odot }}}$ with an amplitude of 0.025, which decreases to ∼0.001 for massive haloes (${{{M}_{\rm h}}}> 10^{14} {\,{\rm M}_{{\odot }}}$). Compared to central galaxies only, the total SHMR (including satellites) is boosted by a factor of 10 in the high-mass regime (cluster-size haloes), a result consistent with cluster analyses from the literature based on fully independent methods. After properly accounting for differences in modelling, we have compared our results with a large number of results from the literature up to z=1: we find good general agreement, independently of the method used, within the typical stellar-mass systematic errors at low to intermediate mass (${{{M}_{\rm \star }}}<10^{11} {\,{\rm M}_{{\odot }}}$) and the statistical errors above. We have also compared our SHMR results to semi-analytic simulations and found that the SHMR is tilted compared to our measurements in such a way that they over- (under-) predict star formation efficiency in central (satellite) galaxies

Abstract

We present weak lensing and X-ray analysis of 12 low-mass clusters from the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Lensing Survey and XMM-CFHTLS surveys. We combine these systems with high-mass systems from Canadian Cluster Comparison Project and low-mass systems from Cosmic Evolution Survey to obtain a sample of 70 systems, spanning over two orders of magnitude in mass. We measure core-excised LX-TX, M-LX and M-TX scaling relations and include corrections for observational biases. By providing fully bias-corrected relations, we give the current limitations for LX and TX as cluster mass proxies. We demonstrate that TX benefits from a significantly lower intrinsic scatter at fixed mass than LX. By studying the residuals of the bias-corrected relations, we show for the first time using weak lensing masses that galaxy groups seem more luminous and warmer for their mass than clusters. This implies a steepening of the M-LX and M-TX relations at low masses. We verify the inferred steepening using a different high-mass sample from the literature and show that variance between samples is the dominant effect leading to discrepant scaling relations. We divide our sample into subsamples of merging and relaxed systems, and find that mergers may have enhanced scatter in lensing measurements, most likely due to stronger triaxiality and more substructure. For the LX-TX relation, which is unaffected by lensing measurements, we find the opposite trend in scatter. We also explore the effects of X-ray cross-calibration and find that Chandra calibration leads to flatter LX-TX and M-TX relations than XMM-Newton

Abstract

We present cosmological parameter constraints from a tomographic weak gravitational lensing analysis of ~450deg$^2$ of imaging data from the Kilo Degree Survey (KiDS). For a flat $\Lambda$CDM cosmology with a prior on $H_0$ that encompasses the most recent direct measurements, we find $S_8\equiv\sigma_8\sqrt{\Omega_{\rm m}/0.3}=0.745\pm0.039$. This result is in good agreement with other low redshift probes of large scale structure, including recent cosmic shear results, along with pre-Planck cosmic microwave background constraints. A $2.3$-$\sigma$ tension in $S_8$ and `substantial discordance' in the full parameter space is found with respect to the Planck 2015 results. We use shear measurements for nearly 15 million galaxies, determined with a new improved `self-calibrating' version of $lens$fit validated using an extensive suite of image simulations. Four-band $ugri$ photometric redshifts are calibrated directly with deep spectroscopic surveys. The redshift calibration is confirmed using two independent techniques based on angular cross-correlations and the properties of the photometric redshift probability distributions. Our covariance matrix is determined using an analytical approach, verified numerically with large mock galaxy catalogues. We account for uncertainties in the modelling of intrinsic galaxy alignments and the impact of baryon feedback on the shape of the non-linear matter power spectrum, in addition to the small residual uncertainties in the shear and redshift calibration. The cosmology analysis was performed blind. Abstract

The Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS) is an optical wide-field imaging survey carried out with the VLT Survey Telescope and the OmegaCAM camera. KiDS will image 1500 square degrees in four filters (ugri), and together with its near-infrared counterpart VIKING will produce deep photometry in nine bands. Designed for weak lensing shape and photometric redshift measurements, the core science driver of the survey is mapping the large-scale matter distribution in the Universe back to a redshift of ~0.5. Secondary science cases are manifold, covering topics such as galaxy evolution, Milky Way structure, and the detection of high-redshift clusters and quasars. KiDS is an ESO Public Survey and dedicated to serving the astronomical community with high-quality data products derived from the survey data, as well as with calibration data. Public data releases will be made on a yearly basis, the first two of which are presented here. For a total of 148 survey tiles (~160 sq.deg.) astrometrically and photometrically calibrated, coadded ugri images have been released, accompanied by weight maps, masks, source lists, and a multi-band source catalog. A dedicated pipeline and data management system based on the Astro-WISE software system, combined with newly developed masking and source classification software, is used for the data production of the data products described here. The achieved data quality and early science projects based on the data products in the first two data releases are reviewed in order to validate the survey data. Early scientific results include the detection of nine high-z QSOs, fifteen candidate strong gravitational lenses, high-quality photometric redshifts and galaxy structural parameters for hundreds of thousands of galaxies. Abstract

Theo van Doesburg als egocentrische opportunist tegenover Theo van Doesburg als idealistische wereldverbeteraar, dat zijn twee uitersten in de beeldvorming. Dacht deze fascinerende figuur in zijn achterhoofd alleen aan zijn eigen belang of was hij de onbaatzuchtige voorvechter van de moderne abstracte kunst tijdens het interbellum? Voor beide opvattingen zijn bewijzen te vinden in de bewaard gebleven correspondentie. In deze uitgave van een deel van Van Doesburgs briefwisselingen wordt geprobeerd beide opvattingen tee nuanceren. Er wordt geprobeerd het spel van de avant-garde te analyseren en de spelregels te signaleren, die voortdurend door de spelers zelf veranderd werden. Abstract

The Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS), a 1500- square-degree optical imaging survey with the recently commissioned OmegaCAM wide-field imager on the VLT Survey Tele- scope (VST), is described. KiDS will image two fields in u-,g-,r- and i-bands and, together with the VIKING survey, produce nine-band (u- to K-band) coverage over two fields. For the foreseeable future the KiDS/ VIKING combination of superb image quality with wide wavelength coverage will be unique for surveys of its size and depth. The survey has been designed to tackle some of the most fundamental questions of cos- mology and galaxy formation of today. The main science driver is mapping the dark matter distribution in the Universe and put- ting constraints on the expansion of the Universe and the equation of state of dark energy, all through weak gravitational lens- ing. However, the deep and wide imaging data will facilitate a wide variety of science cases.

Abstract

Ionic valency influences oral processing by changing salivary behavior and merits more attention since little is known. In this study, the influence of three ionic valences (monovalent, divalent and trivalent), ionic strength and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) on lubricating properties of saliva were investigated. Tribological measurements were used to characterize the lubrication response of KCl, MgCl 2 , FeCl 3 , and AlCl 3 in combination with EGCG to the ex vivo salivary pellicle. KCl at 150 mM ionic strength provided extra lubrication via hydration lubrication. Contrarily, trivalent salts aggregated together with the salivary mucins via ionic cross-link interactions, which led to a decrease in salivary lubrication. FeCl 3 and AlCl 3 affected the salivary lubrication differently, which was attributed to changes in the pH. Finally, in presence of EGCG, FeCl 3 interacted with EGCG via chelating interactions, preventing salivary protein aggregation. 99. Gravid uterine torsion after prone positioning in SARS-CoV2 (COVID-19)-related acute respiratory distress syndrome.

Abstract

A multiparous pregnant patient was admitted to the intensive care unit in her third trimester of pregnancy for prone positioning mechanical ventilation after developing SARS-CoV2 (COVID-19)-related acute respiratory distress syndrome. Repositioning in left lateral tilt was followed by uterine contractions and cardiotocography alterations. Preterm caesarean section was performed based on persistent foetal tachycardia and suspected foetal distress, followed by a per-operative diagnosis of uterine levotorsion. This case report is the first to explore a potential causal link between prolonged prone positioning in late pregnancy and postural gravid uterine torsion and highlights the need for appropriate foetal monitoring during prone positioning mechanical ventilation support., (Published by Oxford University Press and JSCR Publishing Ltd. © The Author(s) 2022.)

Abstract

Objective: To investigate the association between periconception maternal folate status and embryonic size., Design: Prospective periconception cohort study., Setting: Erasmus University Medical Centre, Rotterdam, the Netherlands., Population: Seventy-seven singleton pregnancies recruited in 2009 and 2010., Methods: We recruited women before 8 weeks of gestation and performed weekly three-dimensional ultrasound scans from enrolment up to 13 weeks of gestation. As a measure of embryonic growth, crown-rump length (CRL) measurements were performed using V-Scope software in the BARCO I-Space. Maternal blood was collected to determine first-trimester long-term red blood cell (RBC) folate status. Non-malformed live births were included in the analysis. We calculated quartiles of RBC folate, square root-transformed CRL data and performed multivariable linear mixed model analyses., Main Outcome Measures: Serial first-trimester CRL measurements., Results: In total, 484 ultrasound scans were performed in 77 women, in 440 (90.7%) of which CRLs could be measured. RBC folate in the third quartile (1513-1812 nmol/l) was significantly associated with an increased CRL compared with the first two quartiles (814-1512 nmol/l) and the upper quartile (1813-2936 nmol/l; P(overall) = 0.03; adjusted for gestational age, smoking, body mass index and fetal sex). Compared with the third quartile, embryos in the upper quartile were 24.2% smaller at 6(+0) weeks [4.1 mm (95% confidence interval 3.5, 4.7) versus 5.4 mm (95% confidence interval 4.8, 6.1)] and 7.6% smaller at 12(+0) weeks [55.1 mm (95% confidence interval 52.9, 57.3) versus 59.6 mm (95% confidence interval 57.4, 62.0)] of gestation., Conclusions: This study suggests that a very high maternal periconception folate status is associated with reduced embryonic size.
