The “HPI Future SOC Lab” is a cooperation of the Hasso Plattner Institute (HPI) and industry partners. Its mission is to enable and promote exchange and interaction between the research community and the industry partners. The HPI Future SOC Lab provides researchers with free of charge access to a complete infrastructure of state of the art hard and software. This infrastructure includes components, which might be too expensive for an ordinary research environment, such as servers with up to 64 cores and 2 TB main memory. The offerings address researchers particularly from but not limited to the areas of computer science and business information systems. Main areas of research include cloud computing, parallelization, and In-Memory technologies. This technical report presents results of research projects executed in 2018. Many different dynamic routing architectures are available, including sidecar-based routing, routing through a central entity such as an event store or gateway, or architectures with multiple routers. These architectures are currently based on vastly different implementation concepts, such as API Gateways, Message Brokers, or Service Proxies. We propose a new approach that abstracts all these architecture patterns using one Adaptive Dynamic Routers architecture. We hypothesize that a dynamic self-adaptation of the routing architecture is beneficial over any fixed architecture selections for reliability and performance trade-offs. That is, if encountered with traffic and load changes, our approach dynamically self-adapts between more central or distributed routing to optimize system reliability and performance. We evaluate our approach by analyzing our previously-measured data during an experiment of 1200 hours of runtime. Our extensive systematic evaluation with 1089 cases confirms that our hypothesis holds and our approach is beneficial in terms of reliability and performance. Moreover, we empirically validate our results on Google Cloud Platform infrastructure.

Various kinds of dynamic routing architectures are used in today’s service- and cloud-based architectures, including sidecar-based routing, routing through a central entity such as an event store, or ar- chitectures with multiple dynamic routers. So far, the impact of these architectures on system reliability has not been studied. We propose an analytical model of request loss during router and service crashes, as well as an empirical validation of that model. The comparison of the empir- ical data to the predicted values by our model shows a low enough and converging error rate for using the model during system architecting. Our model predicts that, having the same crash probability, decentral- ized routing results in losing a higher number of requests in comparison to more centralized approaches. These results provide important new in- sights when making architectural decisions regarding dynamic routing. To the best of our knowledge, our study is the first to empirically study the reliability trade-off in such architectural decisions.

In this work, we report about recent research results on “Supporting Semi-Automatic Co-Evolution of Architecture and Fault Tree Models”, published in [Ge18]. During the whole life-cycle of software-intensive systems in safety-critical domains, system models must consistently co-evolve with quality evaluation models. However, performing the necessary synchronization steps is a cumbersome and often manual task prone to errors. To understand this problem in detail, we have analyzed the evolution of two representatives of system models and quality evaluation models, namely architecture and fault tree models, for a set of evolution scenarios of a factory automation system called Pick and Place Unit. We designed a set of intra- and inter-model transformation rules which fully cover the evolution scenarios of the case study and which offer the potential to semi-automate the co-evolution process. In particular, we validated these rules with respect to completeness and evaluated them by a comparison to typical visual editor operations. Our results show a significant reduction of the amount of required user interactions in order to realize the co-evolution.
