The purpose of this article is to propose a possible way to integrate cultural knowledge into English teaching by using children literature. It also presents an alternative method for researchers to investigate personal identity by using a character from literature as a case study. The article also offers an example of an exploration of the main characters' identity in Jasmin Warga's Other Words for Home. The story represented a life of a twelve-year-old girl from Syria who left behind the war torn city order to live in United States. Her identity formation process was analyzed through the theory of Symbolic Interactionism. Themes found from her journey of moving into new culture included "self as an English language learner" prior to moving to the United States and "self as an immigrant" was presented when she entered American society. her This teaching method might be useful in promoting English learners to become integratively motivated which can be achieved by understanding the cultural and ideological aspects and by developing a cross-cultural awareness of the how to become part of community that speak the target language.

The aim of this study is to determine the problems experienced by Syrian refugee children in the 1st grade primary school in the process of acquiring basic Turkish language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) and the solutions to these problems according to the views of teachers, parents and students. Since the most Syrian refugees in the world are in Turkey, this study was based on basic language skills in Turkish. This research was designed as a survey model. The study group of the research consists of 126 classroom teachers, 15 parents and 15 students. In the research, criterion sampling method was used to determine the participants to be surveyed, and snowball sampling method was used to determine the participants to be interviewed. The research data were collected with the data collection tool titled "Teachers' Opinions on Basic Language Skills" developed by the researcher and a semi-structured interview form. Frequency (f) and percentages (%) were used in the analysis of quantitative data, and descriptive analysis technique was used in the analysis of qualitative data. It has been concluded that Syrian refugee children have problems in describing the text they listen to determining the subject of what they listen, and answering questions about what they listen. In the study, it was determined that Syrian refugee children had severe problems related to the acquisition and use of basic Turkish language skills. It has been concluded that these children can be solved by providing basic Turkish language skills with contemporary approaches, methods and techniques enriched with appropriate materials and supported by technology and cultural elements.

This research is a qualitative case study that examines the problems experienced by school principals in the Reyhanli district of Hatay Province in the education of Syrian students and their possible solutions. The sample of the research consists of the principals of 12 schools with the highest number of Syrian students in the Reyhanli district of Hatay Province, using the criterion sampling technique. The data related to the research were obtained from the answers given to the questions prepared by the researcher. The data were subjected to content analysis and results were obtained under two main headings ("Problems Experienced with Syrian Students in Secondary Schools and Solution Suggestions for Syrian Students' Problems") and 4 themes ("communicative, disciplinary, psychological and sociological"). According to the results obtained, school principals stated that they had problems in communication (specifically, "the language problem") and discipline, student and parents' adaptation to school, and identity information confusion in the e-school in the schools where they work. School principals stated that these problems stemmed from the deteriorated population structure in Reyhanli, and for this reason, reducing the Syrian population in Reyhanli by evenly distributing it to other provinces and districts may be the solution. They suggested that it would be beneficial to increase the number of Turkish courses, the number of Turkish lessons and at the same time cultural adaptation activities to solve the language problem. In the sociological dimension, a proposal was made for the integration of e-school with the population directorate.

This study aims to determine the views of students with refugee status who have emigrated to Turkey for various reasons and are continuing their education in secondary and high schools about the Turkish education system. A total of 149 students (76 male, 73 female) in two different groups, who were attending grades 5-8 and 9-12 in the 2018-2019 academic year, participated in the study which used descriptive research and the survey model in conjunction with each other. The results showed that although the education staff welcomed refugee students, they could not make academic adaptations to suit the unique characteristics of these students. While it was found that the majority of students (51%) had adapted to school in Turkey, some (30%) were not actively attending school, and some (27%) had difficulty meeting their basic needs. The results regarding communication and cooperation showed that while these students could easily express themselves to their classmates and teachers, around 20% experienced undecidedness. Data obtained directly from refugee students in this study are crucial for developing policies and projects to give them access to education, enable them to adapt, and guide future studies. More studies are needed to monitor whether the inclusive practices used in Turkey and throughout the world indeed meet what is intended.

In this study, it is aimed to evaluate the positive or negative effects of the communication model applied in primary school classrooms on the academic success of Syrian immigrant students from the perspective of teachers and students. Therefore, the case study method, which is a qualitative research method, was preferred. The study group of the research is Syrian immigrant students enrolled at primary schools in the cities of Gaziantep and Hatay of Turkey and teachers working in schools where these students receive education. The perspectives of 22 students who immigrated from Syria and 15 teachers were collected using a semi-structured interview form. The data obtained from the semi-structured interview form were analyzed with the NVivo R1 Program. As a result of the research, it was concluded that especially the academic achievements of the students were negatively affected due to the fact that they did not know the Turkish Language. It has been revealed that school stakeholders must first solve the communication problem of immigrant students by acting in cooperation. The communication skills of the teachers and the fact that they are equipped in terms of immigrant students enable them to find solutions more easily when faced with any problem in the educational institutions where they work. This will have a positive reflection on the success of both teachers and students.

This paper aims on revealing the perceptions of 5-6-year-old Turkish and Syrian children sharing the same classroom environment in a preschool education institution by use of metaphors. The study was designed in the phenomenology pattern, one of the qualitative research methods, and conducted with 34 Turkish and 22 Syrian children in the 5-6 age group who receive education in the same kindergarten. The study data were obtained through a semi-structured open-ended form and the content analysis method was used in the assessment of the data. The examination of the study data indicates that Turkish and Syrian children expressed several common metaphors such as 'tree, mother, sky, game, toy, playing, cat, mirror, dog'. However, children attributed different meanings to the metaphors they expressed in common. On the other hand, the study determines that Syrian children created more metaphors with positive meanings compared to Turkish children. The study has a very significant purpose in terms of understanding how the preschool-age children of Syrian families living in Turkey perceive their friends in the schools they attend, and how Turkish children perceive these immigrant children in their classes from the perspectives of both sides. Understanding the perceptions of Syrian immigrant children and Turkish children about each other is critical in terms of guiding educators, decision-makers, and policymakers in order to prevent unfavourable behaviours in schools where children study together, create a positive classroom-school climate, and support an intercultural approach for social peace.

This inquiry into narrative explores the often-silenced migration narratives of three refugee students from Afghanistan, Syria, and Iraq. It is centered around two particular wonderings based in a critical literacy framework. First, what tenets of critical literacy seem most prominent in the narratives of refugee students from the Middle East? Second, what critical understanding of their migration experience do refugee students bring to the classroom? The conceptualized framework is understood as "The Centrality of Experience in Critical Literacy," wherein experience is central and valuable. This study applies the framework using stories as the source from which to better understand how individuals make sense of their worlds. Through a five-phase analysis, which included: free coding, literature derived coding, analysis of time and sequence, narrative pattern coding, and analysis of language, I find rich understandings of 1) the political, non-neutral nature of the world, 2) a fight for access to knowledge, and 3) a hope for envisioned future possibilities as the students seek belonging, refuge, and dreams, reclaiming the power of their own narratives. This inquiry into narrative additionally contributes the three stories and two audio recordings as a cultural data set, which can be used in the classroom.

Purpose: The article unpacks potentials of and resistance towards facilitating meetings between refugee and non-refugee youth in global citizenship education. Design/methodology/approach: The analyses are based on participant observation in a school-based intervention in three locations, developed on the principles of design-based research [DBR]. Findings: The article exposes both how meetings between students could be deeply educational and how teachers prevent meaningful interaction between students out of concern for refugee students. Research limitations/implications: More research is needed on how students care for themselves and others in transformational learning contexts. Practical implications: Privileged teachers' concern for retraumatising students can veil unconscious protection of the privileged self against students' trauma and should therefore be subject to critical reflection.

Migrations and migrants have been in the focus of interest and activities of many governments, organizations, and institutions, both worldwide and in Croatia. According to international policies, children who seek or are under international protection have the right to education. To access the education system of the Republic of Croatia more easily, they are given the opportunity to attend Croatian language preparatory or remedial classes. The research aim was to determine the needs and challenges posed by the inclusion of a Syrian asylum seeker in a Croatian primary school. The qualitative approach was applied. The case study presents a ten-year-old Syrian girl, attending a primary school in Zagreb. The data were gathered with the use of semi-structured interviews with the girl's sister, teachers in the primary school, and her classmates. In order to gain a deeper insight into the girl's functioning in the school context, notes made by teachers during observation of the girl's performance in the course of the educational process were gathered and analysed. Guidelines and recommendations were developed that could have a positive impact on quality inclusion of children refugees and asylum seekers in the Croatian education system.

In the research, the effect of engineering design-based STEM activities on the school belonging to seventh-grade refugee students was examined. A mixed-method was used in the research. The research sample consists of 32 Syrian refugee students studying in the 7th grade in the fall semester of the 2019-2020 academic year. The study lasted for ten weeks, with two lessons per week. In addition, the "School Attachment Scale for Children and Adolescents" was used as a quantitative data collection tool. On the other hand, qualitative data collection tools were used as "STEM Education Reflective Diary Form, STEM Education Interview Form, and Teacher Interview Form," which were prepared based on quantitative scale items. Statistical methods were used to analyze the quantitative data obtained in the research, and content analysis was used in the qualitative data analysis. The quantitative data showed a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test scores. As a result, It was concluded that the engineering design-based STEM activities carried out contributed positively to the individual and social development of Syrian refugee students; their positive attitudes towards the lesson and the teacher impacted their sense of belonging to the school.

In the present study, the authors focus on putting forward the thoughts of Syrian immigrant students at Turkish universities citizenship about citizenship from an Arendtian viewpoint. The authors investigated the thoughts and experiences of participants using qualitative research and a phenomenological design. The participants are Syrian students at Turkish universities. In order to ascertain the participants, criterion sampling method was used. The collected data was analyzed through a three-step model by exploring the data to obtain a holistic understanding of it, (en)coding the data and determining the themes. After all those procedures, the themes were reached as: the myth of acceptance at first glance, temporary togetherness, and university as a life-saver.

The purpose of this study is to determine the difficulties in professional development and professional needs of Turkish teachers at Temporary Education Centers (TECs), difficulties confronted by them during educational and instructional processes, their working conditions and difficulties confronted in the administration of Temporary Education Centers (TECs) according to the opinions of Turkish teachers and Temporary Education Centers (TECs) principals. Qualitative research methods and techniques are used in this study. From the qualitative research designs, a case study is conducted. The participants of the study consist of seven Turkish teachers and two Temporary Education Center (TEC) vice-principals and a TEC principal working at a TEC in Ankara. Data is collected in-depth, and multiple sources of information are consulted. Data of the study is collected through interviews and observations, and this data is analyzed by using content analysis. As a result, according to the participant ideas, three main problem areas at TECs are determined as professional development, education-training process and working conditions.

This study aims to investigate the educational experiences of Syrian students, who switched to distance education due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the factors affecting success in academic courses during this period. Descriptive survey model was used in this study. Research was conducted using the personal information form, the Distance Education Evaluation Questionnaire in the COVID-19 pandemic, and Academic motivation questionnaire in the COVID-19 pandemic. The study group consists of 200 students studying in Kahramanmaras in the 2020-2021 academic year and participating in the distance education during the pandemic. The frequency (f) and percent (%) values of the opinions of Syrian students studying in secondary education institutions were calculated. The findings obtained at the end of the research were discussed under the headings of (i) students' views on distance education, (ii) factors affecting academic motivation, (iii) changes in studying habits and (iv) academic psychological support of families and teachers during distance education.

The Syrian question has not remained as an internal conflict; instead, it has affected both Turkey as well as whole Europe. According to 2020 statistics, approximately three and a half million Syrians reside in Turkey, and approximately 850 thousand of these Syrians are young people between the ages of 15-24.The determination of the reasons why the young population who could be regarded as the future of the Syria learn Turkish, their perceptions of Turkey and expectations from the future, is vitally important for both the proper administration of their process' of learning Turkish as a second language, as well as for the planning of the future of the young Syrians. This study, which aims to determine the reasons why Syrians who choose to learn Turkish as a second language, their perceptions of Turkey and expectations from the future, has been prepared per the qualitative research model. An interview form to be used in the study was prepared by the assistance of experts in the field and the form was administered to sixty-six participants. The data were analyzed by using the descriptive analysis method. According to the results of the research, Syrians want to learn Turkish in order to meet their basic needs, to get education, to find a job, to work and to eliminate communication problems in daily life. Language, education, finding a job, adaptation problems, university placement and getting an identity card stand out as the issues that Syrians have difficulties in Turkey. 52.1 percent of the young people plan to graduate from university and begin working immediately. The most important factor in this is that people have families they are responsible for and they have to make a living. The future expectations of young people, who are struggling to learn a language, receive higher education, find a job and continue their lives, look for security, peace, stability and success. Syrian young people want to leave the war behind and carry on the future with hope. In this context, it is necessary for all countries to accept their responsibilities and to determine a common framework for the solution of the problem.

This study aims to investigate the educational problems of refugee students of Syrian origin. It is a qualitative research designed as a phenomenological study. Phenomenology, a qualitative research method, was the design of choice. The sample group consisted of two administrators, two school counselors, and 11 classroom teachers from a temporary education center in Altindag/Ankara, Turkey. The data of the study were collected using the interview method. The data were analyzed using content analysis. According to the research findings, Syrian refugee children face socioemotional, family, language, and school problems and hate speech, discrimination, isolation, and exclusion. Syrian refugee children should undergo an orientation and preparation program before enrolling in Turkey's public schools. Seminars should be offered to the Turkish population to help them develop empathy for refugees and understand what they are going through. Teachers should be trained in multicultural education.

This qualitative research explored Syrian refugees' self-determination and psychosocial adjustment in Turkey and teachers' experience working with refugees. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews from 12 vocational and language teachers (M[subscript age] = 34.27, SD[subscript age] = 4.94) who had an average of 9.58-year teaching experience and at least one year of teaching Syrian forcibly displaced people and refugees. The content analysis revealed three overarching themes: (1) the needs for autonomy, competence and relatedness facilitate refugees' adjustment in dealing with resettlement stressors; (2) trauma experience interferes with refugees' adjustment; and (3) working with refugees transforms teachers to become more tolerant, resilient, patriotic, sensitive to diversity, and grateful for their relationships. The findings may stimulate psychosocial interventions and policies that would mitigate contextual barriers as well as create an inclusive psychosocial environment. Refugees are likely to benefit from a nurturing environment and teachers are likely to benefit from trainings focusing on trauma informed teaching skills.

With this research, it is aimed to determine the problems faced by classroom teachers who have Syrian immigrant students in their classrooms in Turkey. The research was designed as a single case study, one of the qualitative research methods. Criterion sampling method, one of the purposive sampling methods, was used. The participants of the research are 10 classroom teachers. The data of the research were collected through semi-structured interviews. The collected data were analyzed by content analysis method. According to the findings, the most basic problem in the education process of primary school teachers with immigrant children in their class is the language problem. The language problem creates communication problems with immigrant children and their parents. While some of the teachers who have immigrant children in their class see this as an advantage, some see it as a disadvantage due to the problems they experience. Teachers offered solutions for children, parents and teachers to cope with the problem situations they experienced in their classrooms.

Motivation undoubtedly plays an important role in learning a second language in that the whole process presupposes motivation to some extent. In the context of Syrian refugees, understanding the factors motivating learners is the very first step in the language learning process in that the refugees must first be integrated into the education system, which will soon facilitate adaptation to society. In this quantitative study, a cross-sectional survey model was employed to determine the reasons for Syrian adult refugees to learn Turkish and examine the influence of motivation on Turkish language achievement. The participants were Syrian adult refugees who learned Turkish as a second language in Turkey. The data of the study were obtained using a questionnaire including the "Motivation Scale for Learning Turkish as a Foreign Language" and the "Turkish Achievement Test" developed by the researchers. Data obtained from the motivation scale were analyzed quantitatively by using descriptive statistics, and the mean values and the standard deviations of the achievement test scores were calculated using SPSS. The results indicated that the main reasons Syrian refugees learn Turkish are professional career, academic career, survival needs and social adaptation. On the other hand, their motivations were found to be high, and it was revealed that refugees were mostly instrumentally motivated. While no significant differences were found in the level of motivation among of Syrian adult refugees in terms of their reasons for learning Turkish, the results clarified that motivation has a great role in raising proficiency in learning Turkish as a second language. Regarding the results of the study, it can be suggested that language teachers should be aware of various reasons of their learners to learn a language and seek ways to motivate them, which will support the learning process.

In this study, it is aimed to determine the views of undergraduate teacher candidates on the concepts of refugee and asylum seeker and the problems these children experience. In the study carried out with the qualitative method, the case pattern was used. The sample of the study consists of 18 teacher candidates determined by the criterion sampling method. While determining the sample, pre-service teachers were asked to know concepts such as refugees and asylum seekers, and in this context, students who took or already took the "inclusive language teaching" course were included in the sample. Data were collected with an open-ended question form and the questionnaire consists of 5 questions. After the data was transferred to the computer environment, codes were created with the help of another researcher and the themes were reached by bringing together similar codes. The data of the research were collected from teacher candidates by face-to-face application. When we look at the findings of the research, it is seen that the candidates generally know why refugees and asylum seekers have to migrate from their countries, and they have a good grasp of the problems experienced in the migration process and in the country, they come from. Participants stated that language and communication problems were especially effective on children and this situation would cause problems in participating in education and adapting to society. The candidates, who offered constructive suggestions on the subject, stated that especially refugees and asylum seekers should return to their countries after a certain period of time and that the problems experienced in their countries should be solved and a welfare environment should be created during this period.

This paper aimed to determine primary school teachers' practices and classroom examples regarding culturally responsive education (CRE) in their life science courses. The study was conducted with the participation of 20 teachers, half of whom were employed in a primary school in Gaziantep province and the other half employed in the PIKTES [Promoting Integration of Syrian Kids into the Turkish Education System] project in the same province. The study adopts a qualitative research design that involves semistructured interviews. The results revealed that the most common challenges experienced by primary school teachers were Syrian students' language and communication problems, as well as primary school teachers' lack of awareness about minority kids' culture and CRE. The most popular teacher techniques were those that aimed to increase student empathy. Based on the results, some suggestions were recommended for future studies.

Mobile learning, which is widely used in educational settings during the COVID-19 pandemic, will continue playing a critical role in learning environments in the future. Since the successful implementation of mobile learning in education is largely based on users' acceptance of these technologies, it is essential to understand the factors affecting learners' acceptance of mobile devices as learning tools. This study investigated Syrian adult refugees' acceptance and use of mobile learning tools. The results revealed that Syrian adult refugees were positive about using mobile devices in learning Turkish as a second/foreign language, and there exists a concrete and significant correlation among all the constructs of the mobile learning tools acceptance like Perceived Ease of Use, Contribution to Foreign Language Learning, Negative Perceptions, and Voluntariness of Use. Factors affecting mobile learning acceptance was also investigated in the study, and the results indicated significant differences among the refugees regarding their characteristics such as age, gender, level of education. The results also revealed that while the refugees did better in the tests over time, mobile learning acceptance had no significant effect on foreign language achievement. Depending on these results, it can be suggested that mobile devices should be integrated into the education system as a component of the curriculum.

Graphic novels have emerged as an effective pedagogical tool for teaching complex processes like global migration. Through their use of visual language, graphic novels can offer insights into the lived experiences of migrants and refugees, their challenges and triumphs, and the broader social and political contexts that shape migration. Graphic novels also provide a means of representing diverse perspectives and nuanced experiences, as well as allowing students to understand core concepts in migration. In this examination of the graphic novel "Welcome to the New World," the author explores how the author conveys key ideas in global migration regarding the "geographical lens" and the spatial perspective. The graphic novel explores how the family learns how to acclimate to a different culture with the little assistance they are provided, while also being subject to racism and discrimination from those in their new community. The space (considered the absolute location in this definition) in "Welcome to the New World" is focused on three main countries: Syria, Jordan, and the United States. Language barriers, a lack of community, and the emotional toll of immigrating can present challenges for a family trying to find their place in a new country. Social networks are another important element of the geographical lens, and they clearly are important in this graphic novel, facilitating the integration of Ibrahim's family into their new home. The novel also demonstrates how movement can be very conditional for refugees when trying to cross political borders. Ultimately, reading this graphic novel requires students to tangle with difficult subjects related to social justice and human rights and encourages them to empathize with many refugee experiences through images and characters conveyed in graphic novels.

This paper aims to compare refugee settlement and education policies between two geographically and culturally distinct nations, Australia and Turkey. Due to its geographical position in the Middle East, Turkey now hosts millions of refugees especially following the outbreak of the Syrian civil war in 2011. Australia also has a long history of hosting and supporting refugees from many countries and the Arabic-speaking nations are no exception. Conducting a comparative historical analysis, this study aims to fill the gap in our knowledge about the education policies and practices of both countries. Based on the expectations and needs of refugee students, it emerges that new policy practices and approaches backed by adequate academic and financial resources are required in both countries.

Increasing research shows pubertal development accelerates following threats while it decelerates following deprivation. Yet, these environmental stressors are unlikely to occur in isolation. We investigated how war exposure and energetic stress impact pubertal development using data from the longitudinal Biological Pathways of Risk and Resilience in Syrian Refugee Children study. Our sample included 1,600 male and female Syrian refugee children and their caregivers who lived in temporary settlements in Lebanon. We hypothesized that (a) energetic stress suppresses pubertal development; (b) war exposure accelerates pubertal timing in boys and increases risk of menarche in girls, but only when energetic stress is low; and (c) when energetic stress is elevated, effects of war exposure on pubertal development will be attenuated. Among boys, we did not find support for Hypothesis 1, but Hypotheses 2 and 3 were supported. Exposure to morbidity/mortality threats accelerated pubertal timing; this effect was attenuated under conditions of elevated energetic stress. Among girls, we found support for Hypothesis 1, but not for Hypotheses 2 and 3. Elevated energetic stress decreased the risk of menarche in girls. Neither war exposure, nor any interactions with energetic stress, predicted risk of menarche. Sensitivity analyses revealed a significant interaction between bombing exposure and the amount of time since leaving Syria. Bombing decreased the risk of menarche, but only for girls who had left Syria four or more years prior to data collection. We discuss implications for translational efforts advocating for puberty screening in medical and mental health settings to identify trauma-exposed youth.

With its imperial past, nationalist tradition, past westernization attempts, inverse orientalism toward populations from the East, and current neo-Ottomanist policies, Turkey presents an interesting case in which to examine the ideologies underlying its education system. Turkish schools began receiving a large number of Syrian refugees following the outbreak of the Syrian War in 2011. How does Turkey seek to absorb these former subjects of the Ottoman empire politically, discursively, and socioculturally into its national body politic, and more specifically into the education system, in light of shifting relations with Arabs and changing representation of the Arabic language and culture? Based on literature review and interviews with Syrians, state officials, and NGO representatives in Istanbul between 2017 and 2020, this study demonstrates that while there is strong emphasis on shared religious and cultural ties, Syrians are still expected to assimilate, similar to other historically minoritized populations in Turkey, albeit with some peculiarities. These peculiarities stem from increased prominence of the Arabic language through the Islamization project of the present government, international funding for the accommodation of refugees, and the economic relations the government seeks with Arab countries.

The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of educational activities integrated with children's books on Turkish primary school student's perceptions of Syrian students. The research participants consisted of 51 Turkish primary school students educated in a primary school in Istanbul. The data in the study were obtained by scale prepared by the researchers. In the analysis of data obtained in the research, statistical techniques were used. According to the research findings, children's books were influential on students' immigrant perceptions. Accordingly, it was determined that there is a significant difference in favor of the post-test between the pre and post-test mean scores of the students in the experimental group. The study's findings indicate that educational activities enriched with children's books effectively affect primary school students' perceptions of immigrant children.

The concept of 'learner-centered education' (LCE) continues to be defined inconsistently across the literature, and very little research has examined LCE from the perspectives of the teachers themselves. This study addressed this gap by conducting a quantitative survey with 248 English language teachers. The study sought to examine 1) whether or not participants had heard of LCE; 2) how confident they felt explaining the concept; 3) how they would define LCE; and 4) how useful they felt the concept was to their practice. Teachers were asked to rate the extent to which they agreed with 10 potential aspects of LCE that had emerged from a metaanalysis of the literature. The study found that the teachers interpreted LCE in a broader way than is typically found in definitions in the literature, generally agreeing that all 10 aspects should be included in a multi-faceted definition of LCE. Some aspects (such as 'Active participation') were considered important by a larger number of teachers. Moreover, certain variations were noted based on factors such as participant nationality, further reinforcing the idea that a more flexible, context-led approach to defining LCE might be more useful than the numerous contradictory definitions found in the literature.

This research attempts to reveal the views of the primary school teachers, having Syrian students in their class, on these students' Turkish and mathematics skills and the challenges they have confronted in the classroom. The research used a mixed research method and 347 primary school teachers who met the criterion of having Syrian students in their classes participated in the research. Quantitative data were gathered through a five-point Likert type questionnaire consisting of 27 questions, and qualitative data were collected with eight open-ended questions. Descriptive statistical methods were used during quantitative data analysis and descriptive analysis for qualitative data. The research findings revealed that Syrian students' reading, reading comprehension and problem solving skills were not sufficiently developed due to the lack of speaking Turkish. In the same vein, there were communication problems with students and parents due to the language barrier which affects Syrian students' choice of friends and their success in classes. Another research finding suggested that Syrian students were at a satisfactory level in operational skills that do not require verbal knowledge, especially in mathematics lesson. In addition, the parents were identified to be indifferent to the students' lessons and they did not help with their homework. The participants' common view was that Syrian students should receive Turkish education in separate classes (preparatory class) in order to solve the language problem before schooling.

This study aimed to examine bullying, achievement motivation, and resilience levels of both Syrian refugee students and Turkish students at an Islamic religion-based high school for boys. The sample included 289 students. One hundred and forty-three (49.50%) of the participants were Syrian and 146 (50.50%) were Turkish students. The mean age of the participants was 16 years (SD = 1.30). This study found that the level of bullying among refugee students was higher, and the level of achievement motivation was lower than for Turkish students. However, there was not a significant difference with regard to resilience scores. In terms of grade level, 9th-grade students reported lower scores of bullying than 10th- and 12th-grade students. The results indicated that bullying, resilience, and the demographic information of nationality (Syrian and Turkish) were significant predictors of achievement motivation. In addition, the relationship of resilience with achievement motivation was the same strength for both groups when separately analysed. These findings may help school counsellors, teachers and administrators to raise awareness in schools about issues such as forced migration and refugee psychology, trauma and its effects, bullying, low motivation, and problems faced by refugee students in general.

This article discusses the education system under the totalitarian regime of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) from 2014 to 2017. It describes and analyses the characteristics of the totalitarian education system, as conceived and implemented by the Salafist and jihadist group. The aim of this article to understand some of the totalitarian educational tools used by ISIS and to contribute to the understanding of education induced by totalitarian regimes, including its common features and implications. The analysis reveals fundamental characteristics: (a) the destruction of the existing education system in order to redefine its contours entirely, (b) an attempt to control educational content completely in order to apply a comprehensive doctrine, (c) the infusion of terror by means of extreme violence and fear throughout all educational components, and (d) the enforced loneliness of individuals in order to annihilate their creative potential. The challenge today is to prevent the "totalitarian temptation" by proposing educational approaches adapted to counteract these new jihadist attempts.

Much research focuses on schooling for refugee children in resettlement contexts; however, limited research addresses young adult refugees (YAR) between 16-24 years in the adult education (AE) system. This paper strives to fill this gap by providing the perspectives of 12 AE practitioners who welcomed and worked with Syrian YAR in Quebec, Canada. Practitioners' experiences and challenges faced with this refugee population reveal strategies needed to enable YAR to flourish and attain their objectives, including a call for systemic change in AE. Critical race theory and the capabilities approach set the conceptual framework guided by a narrative inquiry methodology. Semi-structured interviews provided the data that were thematically analyzed through collaborative work. From our understanding of the effectiveness of AE approaches for YAR, it is clear, based on the insights provided by the practitioners, that the face of AE has changed, and its current approach does not work for the YAR population.

Smartphones accompany international students as they adapt to different contexts during their stay abroad. In this empirical study, we examined how a group of international students (n=10) in France used their smartphones during the eight-week lockdown that imposed on everyone a stay-at-home order and allowed minimal physical contact (April and May 2020). We collected data about students' use thanks to a self-tracking app and interviews. Drawing on literature from the fields of language education, communication, and psychology, we considered advantages and limitations of smartphone use by international students pertaining to three aspects of their lives: (1) emotional management; (2) language and culture learning; and (3) sociocultural adaptation. Since international students were in the host country, but without the social life on campus that usually makes immersion abroad so special, this study led us to reflections about immersion and inclusion in education abroad.

Social and emotional learning (SEL) programs are increasingly embraced by the global humanitarian sector as a potential strategy for supporting refugee children's psychosocial adaptation and learning. However, little evidence is available on the effectiveness of such SEL programs in humanitarian settings. Even less is known about whether such SEL programs can be equally effective, more beneficial, or even harmful, for children who were exposed to higher levels of conflict, in the context of war and/or postmigration settings. This study evaluates the effectiveness of a universal, multicomponent, skill-targeted SEL curriculum embedded in nonformal remedial education programming, the Five-Component SEL (5CSEL), for improving 20 proximal and distal outcomes. The large-scale cluster randomized controlled trial was conducted in 57 community sites (170 classrooms) in Lebanon with 4,289 Syrian refugee children (M[subscript age] = 9.16, SD = 2.34; 50% female). It examined both the impact of 5CSEL and the impact variation by children's level of exposure to war violence, family conflict, and school victimization. The findings do not provide conclusive evidence of the effectiveness of 5CSEL. However, we find promising signs of impacts in a number of the outcomes (effect sizes = 0.06-0.18 SD), suggesting the malleability of refugee children's SEL skills across multiple domains when given sufficient, targeted, and comprehensive support. Finally, we find little evidence of variation in impact by the level of exposure to conflict experiences, supporting the arguments for the benefits of universal SEL programming. These results provide promising directions for practitioner communities to invest in further development and revision of the SEL program contents and strategies.

In this study, problems encountered by mathematics and science teachers in classrooms where Syrian students under temporary protection status and suggestions for solution to these problems were examined. A case study was used among qualitative research methods. 30 volunteer mathematics and science teachers from three state middle schools in the 2018-2019 academic year have attended the study in which criterion sampling was preferred. In the study where a semi-structured interview form was utilized, evaluation of the data was done through content analysis. As the result of this study, it was determined that Syrian students have problems particularly language and communication problems which are stemming from behavioral, parenting, economic, legislative, and their past lives. Underlying the problems encountered by mathematics and science teachers in their lessons is the Syrian students' not having sufficient language skills and having difficulties in perception and learning. Incompatibility of the curriculum, parents' perspective on education, having difficulties in dealing with problems and lack of materials are among the issues that teachers have problems in. The difficulty acquisition levels and course contents, the level difference between students, and the lack of training in the subjects are among the most common problems encountered by teachers in terms of the dimension of the curriculum. The suggestions of mathematics and science teachers are for the students and families to overcome the language problem, increasing the supplementary courses, providing material support, and providing support for the education of the families.

Affective variables in the second/foreign language learning process affect success and proficiency in the target language. Being willing, one of these variables, draws attention as a factor affecting both academic and social success. The importance given to "communication" by the reference frames, programs and guidelines offered for language learning necessitates turning it into a skill. Skill can be developed to the extent of willingness. In this context, determining whether or not Turkish learners as a second/foreign language are willing to communicate or at what level they are willing will eliminate the problems by revealing the deficiencies and obstacles in communication skills. Moreover, it is of vital importance for the revision and reorganization of the language teaching process and practices. The aim of the study is to determine the level of willingness to communicate in Arabic and Turkish among Syrians learning Turkish in Turkey. A quantitative descriptive approach was adopted in the research. Among the non-random sampling methods, convenience sampling was preferred. The data were collected from 102 Syrian students, 35 females and 67 males, who were studying at university and registered with the Aydin Governorship Provincial Directorate of Migration Management. The Willingness to Communicate Inside and Outside the Classroom Scales developed in six-point Likert type, adapted by Al-Murtadha (2020) from McCroskey and Baer (1985) and Cao and Philp (2006), were used. Parametric methods were used in statistical analysis. The dependent groups t-test method was used to compare two different scale scores in a single group, and the independent groups t-test method was used to compare a single score in two different groups. As a result of the analysis; it has been determined that students' willingness to communicate is especially high in their mother tongue, Arabic. It was determined that there was a significant difference in favor of Arabic inside and outside the classroom. There was no statistically significant difference between men and women for Turkish and Arabic.

The purpose of this research is to determine perceptions of refugee middle school students in Turkey about history subjects taught in social studies classes. Accordingly, the study was designed in the phenomenology model, a qualitative research method. The sample included 58 middle school 7th and 8th grade Syrian students (28 female, 30 male) legally registered in Gaziantep province of Turkey in 2019-2020. Convenience sampling method was used to select the schools, and criterion sampling, a purposive sampling method, was used to select the sample from students in these schools. Research data were collected with a questionnaire form containing open-ended questions created by the researcher, and subjected to descriptive analysis. Considering the results of the research, one can say that the students could remember the history subjects they learned, and found Ottoman history subjects more interesting. However, they found history lessons boring, and studying history subjects was not effective in creating patriotic perceptions.

Providing people to acquire some skills and concepts, social studies lessons interact with various branches of science. One of them is citizenship education. When citizenship education is examined, it is seen that effective citizenship education comes to the forefront in present democracies. Concepts and issues such as respect for differences, empathy, globalization, cooperation, solidarity, identity, unity, and the feeling of togetherness are important considering immigrant students' acquiring citizenship awareness via intercultural interaction. The aim of this study is to determine the effect of social studies lessons on citizenship perceptions of 7th grade Syrian immigrant students. For this purpose, opinions of 14 Syrian immigrant students, who attended 7th grade in three different secondary schools in Hatay in 2019, were asked. The research was designed in qualitative design and phenomenology model. Purposive sampling method was used to determine Syrian immigrant students participating in the research. A semi-structured student interview form was used to collect data. It was found that, immigrant students in the study group of the research know their rights and responsibilities, respect the rights of others, feel responsible and have patriotism. They stated that citizenship education they received in social studies lessons contributed greatly to their acquisition of these values. Considering these findings, it was concluded that social studies lesson has an important effect on the formation of citizenship perceptions of Syrian immigrant students; enabling them to be connected with the environment they live in with a sense of belonging, while enabling them to become more sensitive and responsible citizens towards their environment.

The purpose of the study is to determine the opinions of preschool teachers regarding the values of Turkish children and Syrian refugee children. Phenomenology design, one of the qualitative research methods, was used in this study. The study group of the research consisted of twenty-four pre-school teachers working in different cities, namely Adiyaman, Kilis, Sanliurfa, Gaziantep, and Hatay, where refugees live intensely. Purposeful sampling method was used to determine the participants of the study. The data of the study were obtained by using semi-structured interview form. The analysis of the data of the research was made by deductive content analysis. The findings of this research reveal that Turkish children and Syrian children generally show similarities behaviors according to the values of respect, responsibility, cooperation, friendship, and helpfulness. In addition, it has been stated that Turkish children and Syrian children display negative behaviors according to the values of self-control and tolerance.

The aim of the present study was to identify the administrative problems that school principals face at schools in the city located in the east of Turkey with high Syrian student population and to provide suggestions for overcoming these problems. The city is a province in Turkey having the highest ratio of Syrian to Turkish population with 95.61%. Therefore, the city is an important topic for the education and social integration of Syrian students. Based on the findings, it has been identified that school principals experience problems such as language and communication problems, crowded classrooms and environments, registration uncertainties, accordance between the parents (Turkish-Syrian), school culture, discipline and behavior. In addition, problems were also identified under headings such as financial resource insufficiency, personnel requirements and in-service training requirements. It has been emphasized that making courses more active, increasing the number of course hours for the targeted culture language will be more beneficial for overcoming the language issues. It has also been indicated that equal distribution of Syrian students to the schools and balancing the student ratio in the province through the use of transportation options if necessary will also be beneficial.

This study was carried out with a total of 75 students attending 9th grade in two high schools affiliated to the Ministry of National Education in Reyhanli district, which hosted many Syrian refugees in Hatay province in the spring semester of 2018-2019 academic years and lasted for three weeks. A total of 75 students, 43 from two different 9th grade classes taught by the same teacher from the first high school, and 32 from the other high school, participated in the study. Two of these classes were assigned as the control group and one as the experimental group. While the symbolic language of chemistry was taught with the traditional teaching method in the control groups, an educational game with Arabic support was used in the experimental group based on the constructive learning approach. Prior knowledge, attitude-perception towards chemistry, and chemistry achievement tests were applied to all three groups before the implementation in order to control their prior knowledge and attitude and perception towards chemistry; the chemistry success test was applied again after the implementation. ANCOVA analysis was used to evaluate the data obtained from the tests. As a result of the study, it was concluded that High school 9th-grade students studying with the educational game based on constructivist learning approach had significantly higher mean score in the chemistry achievement test on the symbolic language of chemistry than the students studying with traditional teaching method, they relate the concepts more accurately, and performed more meaningful learning.

This study aimed to explore the meaning of life among Syrian adolescent refugees enrolled in public schools in Jordan. In particular, it investigated the relationship between the meaning of life and unhealthy behaviors among Syrian adolescent refugees enrolled in public schools in Jordan. The sample comprises 225 Syrian adolescent refugees (104 males and 121 females). The clustering random sampling method was used. Moreover, a scale for exploring the meaning of life was developed to meet the study's goals. A scale for exploring unhealthy behaviors was also developed. The psychometric characteristics of those scales explored were validity and reliability. The respondents' meaning of life level is moderate, and the extent of practicing unhealthy behaviors is moderate. There is a negative statistically significant relationship between the meaning of life and unhealthy behaviors among the respondents. In addition, there is a significant difference between the respondents' meaning of life levels, which can be attributed to gender in favor for females. Conversely, there is a significant difference between the respondents' extent of practicing unhealthy behaviors, which can be attributed to gender for the favor of males. As a result, the researchers recommend exerting effort to reduce the extent of practicing unhealthy behaviors by Syrian adolescent refugees. Furthermore, they recommend exerting effort to improve the meaning of life among them.

This two-year study examined the barriers and challenges encountered by refugee parents as they negotiate their children's successful transition into a new school system. The researchers sought to determine what can be learned from parent and educator experiences of these obstacles in order to optimize parent-teacher collaboration for refugee families. Contextualized within a LEAD (Literacy, English and Academic Development) program in an urban centre in Western Canada, the study triangulated data from focus groups comprising Syrian and Iraqi Arabic-speaking families, teachers, and settlement workers. The data were qualitatively analyzed by incorporating Epstein's six types of parental involvement, a culturally responsive model accounting for parental engagement within the context of home-school-community collaboration (Epstein & Sheldon, 2006). From this model, the researchers make recommendations that include province-wide initiatives to support leadership and teacher training, mandated programming to support refugee and immigrant youth, and the establishment and expansion of board and in-school settlement best practices province-wide.

This study aims to examine the irrational beliefs of Turkish and Syrian parents about parenting behaviors. The study was conducted with 22 mothers and eight fathers whose children are in kindergarten. Content analysis method was used for the analysis of the data acquired within the scope of the study. Four different cases were presented to the mothers and fathers in the study that they can encounter while raising their children. They were asked questions on their beliefs, emotions, and behaviors when faced with these circumstances. The first result obtained from the study findings is that the mothers made more irrational evaluations in all four scenarios than the fathers. Another finding from the study is the similarity of responses to all scenarios from Turkish and Syrian mothers. In summary, in line with the ranking of gender inequality in Turkey, fathers may have identified with a more masculine role and therefore tend not to see themselves as responsible for the care, upbringing and possible problems related to their children.

In recent years, the rapidly increasing number of Syrian students started to be trained in public schools affiliated with the Ministry of National Education (MoNE) raises various problems. Syrian students who are included in the same class as Turkish students without a specific preparation process both have difficulties themselves and causes various discipline problems to all stakeholders such as teachers, parents, administrators and especially Turkish students. In this study, the difficulties experienced by teachers who teach Syrian students at the primary education level are examined in terms of their curriculum. As the curriculum is the most important guide that draws the boundaries of the instruction process and determines how the process should be, and teachers act as an important bridge in the realization of the curriculum in the classroom environment; the difficulties teachers experienced in the implementation of the curriculum will provide important information about the reality of education and give ideas about the arrangements that should be made in the curriculum, if any, or the need for a new curriculum.

The aim of the present study was to develop a valid and reliable measurement tool for identifying the attitudes towards Turkish of Syrian university students learning Turkish as a foreign language. The study group was comprised of a total of 489 individuals with 285 for exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and 204 for confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Student opinions, relevant literature and expert opinions were utilized when developing the scale items thus putting forth a 53 item form. Eight items were excluded following the pilot application on first form for linguistic clarity thus conducting EFA with 45 items. A total of 20 items were excluded as a result of the EFA thus obtaining a 25 item, three factor form that explains 49.42 % of the variance. CFA was conducted with a new study group for examining the model fit of the obtained three factor structure and the results of CFA (X[superscript 2] /sd= 2,46; RMSEA= 0.085; CFI= 0.92; NNFI= 0.91; SRMR= 0.085; GFI: 0.79) set forth that the model fit of the scale is at a sufficient level. The dimension including items on the purpose and function for the use of Turkish by Syrian students was named as "Purpose/function"; items related with the daily use of Turkish were named as "Daily life" whereas the dimension including items including a negative approach towards Turkish was entitled as "Dysfunctional approach". Reliability analyses were carried out for the scale as a result of which the Cronbach's Alfa and Spearman-Brown coefficients were obtained as (0.90) and (0.86) for the "purpose/function", (0.83) and (0.82) for the "daily life", (0.76) and (0.74) for the "dysfunctional approach". The findings of the present study indicate that SSATT is a valid and reliable tool in measuring the attitudes of Syrian university students towards Turkish.

As of the beginning of the Syrian war, many Syrian citizens had to relocate and migrate to other countries, which have borders with Syria. Turkey and Jordan are countries, which hosted very high numbers of Syrian refugees. The majority of Syrian refugees are children and they have not been able to integrate into the education system properly in the countries they sought refugee. This study aims to examine education policies of Turkey and Jordan to identify the problems associated with the existing systems and to provide an appropriate framework for the governments about the necessary educational measures to be taken for the refugees. In the scope of this study, it can be observed that refugees in both Jordan and Turkey have had difficulty in accessing basic education and therefore, the governments had to reconsider and make some changes in their refugee education policies to solve the problems encountered. The data of this research were collected through document analysis.

The aim of this study was to determine and investigate the writing anxiety of Syrian refugees learning Turkish as a foreign language in Turkey according to different variables. The study group of the research, in which survey model was used, consisted of 214 Syrian refugees chosen via purposive sampling method and who learn Turkish as a foreign language in Turkey. "Writing Anxiety Scale for Learners of Turkish as a Foreign Language" was used as data gathering tool in the research. In the analysis process, firstly normality test was conducted and it was determined that it indicated normal distribution. Accordingly, t-test was used in pair independent samples, and one-way ANOVA test was used in multi-group comparisons. As a result of the research, it was determined that writing anxiety level of the Syrian refugees learning Turkish as a foreign language (L2) in Turkey, was at medium level and also their writing anxiety was caused by environmental/social factors rather than internal/mental factors. In addition, when the situation was evaluated according to their language levels, it was determined that students at B2 level had the highest level of anxiety; and that using Turkish in social media reduces the action-oriented anxiety of the students. When the participants' writing anxiety was investigated according to gender, age, and time spent in Turkey it was found that a significant difference was not indicated.
