The photosynthetic rate of (Willd.), (Hedw.) and (Sw.) grown in plastic containers was monitored with infrared gas analyser in open air under natural weather conditions. It proved that the photosynthetic rate of wet moss cushions was satisfactorily predicted by temperature and light intensity. In dry moss cushions this kind of model gave too high an estimate for photosynthetic rate. Water requirements of each moss species were found to be moderate, and water content of moss cushions limited photosynthetic rate only under serious water deficiency.Pleurosium schreberiHylocomnium splendensDicranum undulatum

The use of forest mosses as bioindicators was tested with transplanted experiments. One transplantation experiment was made to study effects of air pollutants on two forest moss species, (Hedw.) Schimp. and (Willd. ex Brid.) Mitt. Another transplantation was used to study the nitrogen fixation capacity of blue-green algae in the and moss layers. The surface structure of the moss species was studied by scanning electron microscopy. The air pollution induced changes in the surface structure of moss cells were observable soon after the transplantation. In polluted industrial areas the fertilizing effect of air-borne nitrogen compounds increased the photosynthetic activity of mosses before their destruction. Stress respiration was also observable in polluted areas. Air-borne Cu and Zn from a brass foundry at Gusum, SE Sweden, have considerably disturbed the lichen and bryophyte vegetation in the coniferous forest environment. The occurrence of lichens on Norway spruce twigs decreased rapidly with increasing Cu concentrations in above 90 ppm (background value 10â15). The epiphytic vegetation is reduced within 2â3 km from the foundry. Only stunted individuals occur in the close vicinity of the pollution source.Hypogymnia physodesHylocomnium splendens

The aim of the present paper was to study the annual production of (Brid.) Mitt., (Hedw.) B.S.G and Sw. as a function of light available for photosynthesis. The woodland mosses (Willd. ex Brid.) Mitt. and (Hedw.) Schimp. were used in air pollution monitoring. During late summer and autumn 1977, 44 samples of were collected in semi-open coniferous forests from Southern Finland (60°N) to Northern Finland and Northern Norway (70°N). Additional 26 samples of were collected in similar places south of 61°30âN. Analysis of both moss species revealed decreasing concentration gradients from south to north for Cu, Fe, Pb and Zn. Conversely, Mn and Mg levels increased with latitude, while Ca did not change significantly. Laiduntajat vaikuttavat kasvillisuuteen useilla sekä suorilla että epäsuorilla mekanismeilla, joista epäsuorat voivat olla ekosysteemiprosessien kannalta tärkeämpiä. Vähätuottoisella tundralla kasvinsyöjien vaikutuksen kasvillisuuteen tiedetään olevan merkittävä, mutta suuri osa tutkimuksesta on keskittynyt laiduntajien ravintokasveihin. Tundralla sammalet muodostavat suuren osan kasviyhteisöjen biomassasta ja monimuotoisuudesta, ja niiden on havaittu toimivan laiduntajien vaikutusten välittäjinä muuhun kasvillisuuteen ja maaperään. Laidunnuksen vaikutuksia sammalyhteisöihin on kuitenkin tutkittu hyvin vähän. Tässä tutkimuksessa selvitettiin poron (Rangifer tarandus tarandus L.) laidunnuksen vaikutuksia sammalten lajimäärään ja monimuotoisuuteen kahdella tuottavuudeltaan erilaisella suuralueella pohjoisessa Suomessa ja Norjassa. Sammallajit ja niiden peittävyydet selvitettiin viidellä eri tundra-alueella, joilla kullakin oli porot poissulkeva aitaus. Monimuotoisuuden muutosten spatiaalisen mittakaavan selvittämiseksi käytettiin hierarkkista otantamenetelmää, joka koostui alueista (100 m × 100 m), näytealoista (50 cm × 50 cm) ja ruuduista (5 cm × 5 cm). Lajimäärää tutkittiin tarkastelemalla eri mittakaavan tasojen lajikertymäkäyriä kummassakin laidunnuskäsittelyssä ja kummallakin tuottavuusalueella. Laidunnuksen vaikutusta lajimäärään ja Simpsonin diversiteetti-indeksiin testattiin myös yleistettyjen lineaaristen mallien ja pesiytettyjen varianssianalyysien avulla. Vaikka tilastollisesti merkitseviä tuloksia löydettiin vain vähän, tuloksissa näkyi selvä laidunnuksen ja tuottavuuden yhdysvaikutus. Laidunnus näytti kasvattavan sammalten monimuotoisuutta tuottavalla suuralueella ja vähentävän sitä vähätuottoisella suuralueella. Tämä vaikutus näkyi selvimmin näytealan mittakaavassa. Tulokset tukevat dynaamisen tasapainon mallin ennustetta laidunnuksen ja ekosysteemin tuottavuuden yhteisvaikutuksesta monimuotoisuuteen, joka on aiemmin saanut hyvin vähän tukea tundralla tehdyistä tutkimuksista. Monimuotoisuuden kasvu tai väheneminen näytti ilmenevän myös sammalyhteisöjen spatiaalisen heterogeenisuuden muutoksina keskisuuressa mittakaavassa. Havaitut muutokset sammalyhteisöissä voivat johtua laidunnuksen aiheuttamasta häiriöstä, mikroympäristöolojen muutoksista tai kasviyhteisöjen kilpailusuhteiden muutoksista, joihin ravinteiden kierron muutokset vaikuttavat. Laidunnuksen vaikutuksia sammalten monimuotoisuuteen ja erityisesti lajistoon sekä vaikutusten mekanismeja tulee tutkia tarkemmin tundraekosysteemien monimutkaisten bioottisten ja abioottisten vuorovaikutusprosessien ymmärtämiseksi.
