Academics’ career trajectories follow diverse paths, and understanding them is challenging. Animal metaphors, notably the contrast between hedgehogs and foxes, have helped to distinguish patterns but need reappraisal as universities change. Reflecting on prominent sociologists’ careers, the argument is developed that academic trajectories differ according to whether work is blue skies or applied, and how it relates to innovation and consolidation. Four types of academic animals are identified: bears, beavers, jackdaws and eagles. Ann Oakley’s career is used to illustrate how individuals’ trajectories may move between these. For researchers anticipating how their academic futures may unfold, role models framed in these terms offer alternative scenarios.

Enriching our understanding of the anatomy of the kidneys, in development, health, and disease, has been the primary focus of Professor John Bertram's distinguished research career to date. Among other notable achievements, his landmark analyses of nephron number in over 400 human kidneys (the Monash Series), and his refinement of stereological techniques for renal structural analyses, have proven him an international leader in renal anatomy research. In this Special Issue, we (some of John's collaborators, colleagues, and former students) celebrate John's career with a series of 20 review and original research articles relevant to his expertise: (a) renal anatomy, physiology, and pathology, (b) kidney development, podocyte biology, and applications of renal stem cells, (c) renal developmental programming, and (d) contemporary methodologies in renal research; his accomplishments as a Head (Chair) of an Anatomy Department are also illustrated. We hope that this collection will serve as both an important resource, and a source of inspiration, to renal anatomy researchers and educators alike.

AbstractBefore the proliferation of research on the causes of vertical segregation in the University, the empirical tradition of analyzing positive determinants in female trajectories has been smaller. The aim of this study consisted of deepening the experiences of the academics in order to describe the factors that facilitate the path to success in the academic and research career. For this purpose, semi-structured and in-depth interviews were conducted with female professors from a university in Argentina. The results show the importance of family factors (family support, existence of female models and ability of conciliation), along with other personal, group and institutional conditions. This work constitutes a previous diagnosis necessary for the design and application of equality measures.

The need to specifically mentor graduate and medical students performing biomedical and biobehavioral research in communication skills is increasingly being highlighted to increase intention to pursue academic research careers, including physician–scientist careers. This study used data collected from 354 research faculty in 33 states across the United States to examine beliefs and perceived barriers about mentoring in scientific communication (writing, presenting, and informal discussion about science), with the goal of advancing evidence-based recommendations for mentoring interventions. Latent profile analysis identified four mentor profiles, based on beliefs regarding mentoring responsibility, expected outcomes, and barriers in scientific communication mentoring. Problem solvers, who acknowledged trainee problems but reported high efficacy in overcoming them, offered the highest levels of supportive and instructive mentoring. Since mentoring messages and actions influence trainee career development significantly, our results have important implications for faculty development to advance effective mentoring, especially in scientific communication.

International scientific mobility and research careers are two concepts that are intimately related. Yet, it has been very difficult for scholarship to pinpoint exactly how international mobility impacts on research careers. This paper contributes to this question by investigating links between international mobility, research career stage progression and job changes. It does so using a large-scale survey (MORE) which targets researchers based in European universities. The results establish that the profile of international mobility varies by academic research career stage. They also show that for researchers in the established mid-career phase who are working internationally, there are career advancement benefits associated with return mobility to their home country. However, these benefits may reduce if the timing of return is too delayed. The paper concludes by discussing the implications of these results for researcher mobility policy in the context of the European Higher Education Area and the European Research Area., This research was partly supported by funding received from the Research Infrastructure for Research and Innovation Policy Studies project (RISIS, contract number 313082).

Aim To validate the Attitudes Toward Statistics Scale (EAE) and to investigate the perceptions and attitudes toward statistics among dentistry postgraduates students. Method A total of 115 postgraduates students (62 master's students, 80 women, age 26 ± 4 years) answered the items of the EAE and the Clinician Attitudes Toward Biostatistics (CATB). Information on academic training was collected. Confirmatory factor analysis (χ²/df, CFI, TLI and RMSEA) was conducted to estimate the validity of the instruments to sample. The standardized mean scores of CATB and EAE factors were estimated and compared (ANOVA). Results The EAE two-factor fit model exhibited adequate validity for the sample (χ²/df = 1.814, CFI = 0.979, TLI = 0.976, and RMSEA = 0.086). Individuals who received their first training earlier, reported better performance in mathematics and greater knowledge of statistics, also exhibition more positive attitudes toward statistics. Individuals who reported having a research career focus, and who evaluated their supervisors’ knowledge of statistics as very poor to intermediate, presented a greater awareness of the importance of statistics in research and scientific evidence. Conclusion The EAE was valid and reliable for the sample. Perceptions and attitudes toward biostatistics were associated with variables involving the participant's academic formation.

"Diversity" is an apt descriptor of the research career of Jack Pettigrew as it ranged from the study of trees, to clinical conditions, to sensory neuroscience. Within sensory neuroscience, he was fascinated by the evolution of sensory systems across species. Here, we review some of his work on avian sensory specialists and research that he inspired in others. We begin with an overview of the importance of the Wulst in stereopsis and the need for further study of the Wulst in relation to binocularity across avian species. Next, we summarize recent anatomical, behavioral, and physiological studies on optic flow specializations in hummingbirds. Beyond vision, we discuss the first evidence of a tactile "fovea" in birds and how this led to detailed studies of tactile specializations in waterfowl and sensorimotor systems in parrots. We then describe preliminary studies by Pettigrew of two endemic Australian species, the plains-wanderer (Pedionomus torquatus) and letter-winged kite (Elanus scriptus), that suggest the evolution of some unique auditory and visual specializations in relation to their unique behavior and ecology. Finally, we conclude by emphasizing the importance of a comparative and integrative approach to understanding avian sensory systems and provide an example of one system that has yet to be properly examined: tactile facial bristles in birds. Through reviewing this research and offering future avenues for discovery, we hope that others also embrace the comparative approach to understanding sensory system evolution in birds and other vertebrates.

Dr. Liu Shuzheng as a well-known educator and radiobiologist has started to work on the physiological benefits of low-dose radiation since 1970s. His research on the distinct effects of low-dose radiation from those of high-dose radiation has nationally and internationally impacted radiobiology, medicine and oncology. Therefore, here we briefly review the research from his research team from early years to last two decades. Two important facts related to LDR biological effects are the hormesis and adaptive response, both have been the main focuses of Dr. Liu Shuzheng early research. In the last couple of decades Dr. Liu Shuzheng have further investigated how to apply these important mechanisms into clinical translational research, such as the potential to application of LDR-hormesis to enhance tumor’s chemo- or radio-therapy and LDR-induced adaptive response to protect normal tissue from chemo- or radio-therapy related side toxic effects. Therefore, Dr. Liu has provided important guidance and role model for his trainees in the continue of their research career in radiation biology, medicine and oncology.

This paper presents the study of authorship of men and women of the research contributions published in a selection of ten Spanish Archaeology journals over the last half century. The percentage of representation of women in these high-ranking journals and its evolution during this period is analysed. It is also addressed if there are differences in the proportion of female and male authors according to single and multiple authorships, in signature positions and whether the sex/gender of the first authorship has any influence in the rest. Besides, the study tackles the subject of these contributions and also in accordance with sex/gender of the authorship. The results obtained bring to light that despite the incorporation of women in Archaeology university studies and the profession during the last 50 years, men continue to be authors of the majority of the works published in these journals. This study shows that the low proportion of female authors has been sustained over time without observing a progression to an increasing representation of women as authors of these publications., En este artículo se presenta el estudio de la autoría de hombres y mujeres en los trabajos de investigación procedentes de una selección de diez revistas de Arqueología publicadas en España en el último medio siglo.

This paper analyses the contributions published on Antiquity studies during the last half century in a selection of Spanish impact journals, taking into account the sex/gender of the authorship, its proportion and its development over time. In addition, the possible existence of differences is addressed depending on whether the contributions are of one authorship or co-authorship, as well as the position of signature in the works of more than one person. Likewise, the topic of these investigations is taken into account, with which it is intended to determine whether authorships of one sex/gender or another predominate in the different thematic areas. This study shows that the proportion of female authors is low and, furthermore, that a progressive increase in female authorship can not been observed in the last decades. [EN] There are fewer women than men in mathematics research at all career stages, including at graduate level. In addition, over the last 20 years the proportion of women in mathematics doctorates has (slowly) decreased, which will probably be reflected at later career stages in the coming years. With the motivation of understanding this phenomenon, a questionnaire was designed and sent to mathematics students in 12 Spanish universities, with questions aimed to identifying the various factors related to the loss of interest in a research career in mathematics. According to the data obtained, men and women express different expectations about initiating a research or academic career, and these differences are relevant and statistically significant. Time since the first enrolment in the relevant degree emerges as the most determinant variable, for both men and women, in the disaffection towards starting a research career; moreover, the effects are more intense in women, and grow with experience in the degree. ObjectiveTo determine if maintaining continuity in research topic and method from early to late career yields a greater likelihood of physician-scientists’ research career success; that is, achieving research independence and producing impactful publications.MethodsTo explore the effect of maintaining continuity in research, 108 neurology residency graduates (2000–2010) from former medical scientist training programs at the highest National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke– and NIH-funded institutions were identified. Through comparison of PhD dissertations with postgraduate work, research continuity was deemed present if there was evidence of continuity in research topic and method. With publicly available SCOPUS, PubMed, and NIH RePORT data, the correlation that degree of continuity had with h-indices, number of grants awarded, and R01 acquisition was examined.ResultsNearly half of the graduates were classified as noncontinuous (45%), fewer than a quarter as somewhat continuous (22%), and roughly a third as very continuous (32%). The data demonstrated that research continuity increased the ability to acquire a R01, with 83% of R01 or R21 recipients having very continuous research. Very continuous graduates also had higher median number of grants received (2 [interquartile range (IQR) 1–3]) and a higher median h-index (17 [IQR 10.5–20]) compared to the somewhat continuous and noncontinuous groups.ConclusionsThis study highlights research continuity as an important and modifiable variable during the training period of physician-scientists and one that may improve their career success and promote greater retention within the workforce.

Research is crucial to train the next generation of academic surgeons. Formal training builds research skills, starting with the ability to generate hypotheses, formulate questions, and address gaps in knowledge. Essential factors that are important to a research pathway include a supportive environment, experienced mentorship team, work-life balance, and a source of funding. Oral and maxillofacial surgery must make diversity a top priority, and protocols must be implemented to retain members of underrepresented groups throughout their careers.

The research of Mabel Purefoy FitzGerald (1872-1973) was recently recognized by Sir Peter Ratcliffe in his public lecture at the awarding of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine as a critical step in the recent delineation of the oxygen sensing pathway. This brief article offers a tantalizing glimpse into the life of a woman whose scientific career spanned four countries, worked with eminent scientists and clinicians including Haldane and Osler, and published important physiologic discoveries. Her accomplishments and astounding life were lost to history for more than one hundred years and it is time to bring her back. When this diminutive and proper English woman set out on her own to the wild and remote mining towns of Colorado, little did she know that this would be the moment for which she would be remembered in her long, productive research career and ludicrous struggle to become a physician more than a century ago. Hers is an extraordinary tale of privilege, hardship, discrimination, shocking perseverance, and grand adventure.

Aim/Purpose: While scientists play a crucial role within modern knowledge societies, the attractiveness of scientific careers in Germany is moderate due to career uncertainty and the limited perspectives of long-term retention in academia. This study identifies (intra-individual) changes in the career intentions of early career researchers. Furthermore, supporting factors for the stability of research career intentions are shown. Background: Recent studies investigated early career researchers’ career intentions and predictors for their development in cross-section. These studies determine influences of individual factors, such as interests or self-efficacy beliefs, and organizational aspects like working and doctoral training conditions. By contrast, there is little knowledge about intra-individual changes in career intentions in the course of academic qualification. Methodology: Longitudinal data of 101 research associates at a German university were collected via survey questionnaires in 2016 and 2018. Descriptive analysis was used to investigate changes in career intentions in consideration of doctoral phases. Logistic regression was applied to predict the stability of research career intentions over time. Contribution: So far, research investigated the career intentions of early career researchers in Germany solely in cross-section. The present paper contributes in two ways. Firstly, intra-individual changes in career intentions are identified from a longitudinal perspective. Secondly, the stability of research career intentions is explained, considering various individual and contextual factors based on the Social Cognitive Model of Career Choice. Findings: Descriptive analyses illustrate the tendency of declining interest in scientific careers in the course of academic qualification. The stability of research career intentions is predicted by changes in attractiveness ratings of a professorship and subjective assessments of research abilities relative to peers. Changes in academic self-efficacy beliefs have no significant effect. Recommendations for Practitioners: Firstly, the attraction of and the path to a professorship must be structurally strengthened. Secondly, early career researchers should be supported in developing realistic assessments of their subjective research skills relative to peers. Mentoring in addition to academic supervision, mental support, or opportunities for peer counseling are expected to be valuable offers. Recommendation for Researchers: Researchers seeking to explain the career intentions of early career researchers should be aware of their changeability. Hence, they should be investigated in extended longitudinal studies. Furthermore, impostor feelings as influencing factors on career intentions need further research. Impact on Society: Research and knowledge are the basis for innovation and progress. In today’s knowledge society, research is in direct competition with both other countries and the private sector. In order to attract the “brightest minds” for academia, universities and research institutes must gain a deeper understanding of factors influencing the stability of research career intentions. Future Research: Future research should focus on specific instruments of promoting early career researchers and how they affect the development of realistic assessments of individual research skills. Moreover, international ECRs should be explicitly considered since a researchers’ visa status potentially affects career prospects and individual career intentions.

Aim: The evidence about factors predicting the desire of medical graduates for pursuing research careers are inconsistent. Identification of factors which influence decision for pursuing research career would be important information to medical schools to improve research environment for students. For that reason, we performed an international survey of medical students to analyze the factors predicting research careers in medicine. Methods: An international online survey of undergraduate and graduate medical students was performed, using the using the data from Res Medica student journal database, about their research activities, future interests and plans and desire to pursue research careers. Results: In total, 486 students took the survey. Logistic regression revealed a single significant factor influencing medical students’ desire to pursue a research degree: in-creased motivation for participation in research in future (R2=0.33). Conclusion: In order to encourage students and training doctors to more readily engage in research, exposure to re-search and research participation could have an incremental value to existing research education in medical schools.

My career has been about discovering science and learning the joys of the discovery process itself. It has been a challenging but rewarding process filled with many exciting moments and wonderful colleagues and students. Although I went to college to become a French major, I ultimately stumbled into research while pursuing a Masters Degree in teaching. Thus, my research career began in graduate school where I was studying NAD kinase in the ovary as a possible regulator of steroidogenesis, a big issue in the late 1960s. After a short excursion of teaching in North Dakota, I became a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Michigan, where radio-immuno assays and radio receptor assays had just come on the scene and were transforming endocrinology from laborious bioassays to quantitative science and of course these assays related to the ovary. From there I went to Baylor College of Medicine, a mecca of molecular biology, cloning genes and generating mouse models. It has been a fascinating and joyous journey.

For an unfamiliar field, researchers who are looking for interdisciplinary collaboration or students who are going to start their research career often need to look for top research affiliations and domain experts according to the publication of top conferences or journals in this field. Further comparative analysis of affiliations or experts with similar achievements is also needed in order to find suitable collaborators or supervisors. In this work, we provide comprehensive visual analysis of research affiliations and domain experts based on papers accepted by the IEEE VIS from 1990 to 2018. First, we extract multi-word keywords from title and abstract automatically and then extract topics using LDA model based on these keywords. Second, we extract relationship between authors and affiliations based on co-author analysis. Third, we design and implement VISPubComPAS, a requirement-driven analysis system to (1) help users discover top affiliations and experts of required keywords; (2) visualize the relationships and statistics of these affiliations and experts; (3) compare two selected affiliations or experts of interest in detail by visualization. Finally, we conduct use cases and user reviews to demonstrate the effectiveness of VISPubComPAS.

Critically reviewing the literature is an indispensible skill which is used throughout a research career. This demystifies the processes involved in systematically and critically reviewing the literature to demonstrate knowledge, identify research ideas and questions, position research and develop theory. A three stage model (assembling, arranging and assessing), each with two interrelated steps, is presented and discussed, along with practical tips and helpful examples. Although aimed primarily at research students, this information in this article will also be useful for research supervisors who wish to find ways to pass along their tacit knowledge related to this critical research skill.

© 2019, © 2019 Australia and New Zealand Association of Leisure Studies. This paper presents the key messages from a keynote address I delivered to the 2017 Australia and New Zealand Association of Leisure Studies conference held in Hobart Tasmania, December 2017. In this paper, I reflect on the heuristic learnings from the role of research in addressing critical social issues in leisure and ‘cultural life’. I do so by examining my very deliberate choice to undertake industry-linked research addressing issues involving human rights, social inclusion and giving voice to marginalized groups. As an insider to these voices, I know that research itself does little to address social inequality unless there is a deliberate action by academics to translate research into outcomes through political engagement, challenging organizational practice and communicating the results publicly beyond the paywall of refereed journals. Yet, this type of academic research advocate does not fit easily within neoliberal performance-based metrics that are narrowly defined within disciplinary boundaries of contemporary higher education. As I will explain there are other rich rewards in stepping outside of these boundaries while still doing trustworthy, rigorous, theoretical investigations with high-quality traditional academic outputs. The paper presents a case study of research examining the participation and non-participation of people with disability in sport and active recreation.

There is no doubt that Walter Pagel (1898–1983) is one of the most outstanding figures in the history of pathology. Not only his fundamental research on tuberculosis and various other fields of pathology but also his historicomedical publications set international standards and earned him numerous honors throughout the scientific world. Far less known is the fact that Pagel, as a German Jew, was one of the victims of the “Third Reich”: He was dismissed from his job in Heidelberg, felt forced to emigrate in 1933 and fought for reparation after 1945. Accordingly, this article deals with Pagel’s role and fate as a politically persecuted and disenfranchised Jew. It focuses on the general circumstances of his dismissal and forced emigration, but also on Pagel’s treatment in post-war Germany. In addition, the influences of this biographical break on Pagel’s further research career are investigated. The study is based on archival sources and on a re-analysis of the relevant research literature. It points out that Pagel’s emigration took place under difficult circumstances and without clear job prospects. Enormous discipline and mental strength as well as successful networking with supporting mentors allowed Pagel to continue his career in his exile country of England despite poor health. The way in which Pagel was treated in post-war Germany, on the other hand, was less satisfactory: the University of Heidelberg did not offer him any prospect of employment and the “reparation procedure” (“Wiedergutmachungsverfahren”) resulted in only small pension payments. Instead, Pagel was awarded an honorary doctorate at his home university in 1966. Of the numerous “stumbling blocks” (n = 183) laid in Heidelberg, not one reminds us of Walter Pagel to date.

The Historical Sociology of Japanese Martial Arts contains a comprehensive history of Japanese martial arts compiled by Spanish historical sociologist Raul Sanchez Garcia. However, it is not simply an overview intended to introduce Japanese martial arts to the West. In this work, the field of Japanese martial arts is used as a case study. According to Raul, his motivation for writing the book was in that although Norbert Elias was particularly fascinated by the Japanese civilizing process, he finished his research career without turning his hand to it. Furthermore, Raul himself has developed his own career as a researcher in the path laid down by Elias’ sociology, and this work displays Raul’s zeal to tackle the challenges left by Elias.

Objectives The National Institutes of Health (NIH), which is the world's largest funding source for research, offers various types of competitive grants depending on the duration, research type, and budget. The Research Project Grant (RPG) is the oldest mechanism for grant allocation that is used by the NIH. In this study, we explored the gender trends of NIH RPGs and R01 grants over the last two decades. Methods By utilizing the NIH Research Portfolio Online Reporting Tool (RePORT), data for gender were extracted, and the percentage of women as RPGs Investigators, R01-equivalent grant including R01 type 1 and type 2 grant awardees, from 1998 to 2019 were tabulated. The absolute change was calculated. Results From 1998 to 2019, the percentage of female RPG awardees has increased. However, the success rates for female RPG applicants have decreased during the same period. The funding and success rates for new R01 awards have been similar for both men and women, but women have been less successful at the renewal of R01-equivalent awards. Conclusion Gender disparity exists in awardees of higher RPGs, including the R01 award. This highlights the need for further actions to ensure gender parity in grant allocations at the NIH.

Background: Clinicians face several barriers to career progression in academia. The natural career progression of acclaimed researchers in musculoskeletal medicine will be analysed to provide a road map for a future researcher. Methods: A retrospective PubMed database search for 32 UK-based researchers in musculoskeletal medicine (orthopaedic surgeons, musculoskeletal radiologists, and rheumatologists) was performed. Researchers with over 10 years in research since their primary medical qualification were included in the study. The number of publications per year were analysed for each researcher. Results: Consultants published a median of 98 papers during their working career and a range of 51 to 399. It took a median of nine years for the first paper to be published (range = 1–27 years). It took a median number of 15 years for a clinician to reach their first peak (range = 6–34). The median number of years spent at the “peak” of one’s research career was 2 (range = 1–24). Conclusions: This is the first study to provide a road map for a musculoskeletal clinical researcher. This study identifies a need for structural change to support and encourage clinicians to participate in research. This can be introduced through a range of methods such as mentorship schemes, medical school workshops, and academic training programmes.

Background: The establishment of scientific collaborations with researchers abroad can be considered a good practice to make appropriate use of their knowledge and to increase the possibilities of them returning to their country. This paper analyses the collaboration between Spanish researchers abroad devoted to health sciences and national science institutions. Methods: We used the Fontes' approach to perform a study on this collaboration with Spanish researchers abroad. We measured the level of national and international cooperation, the opportunity provided by the host country to collaborate, the promotion of collaboration by national science institutions, and the types of collaboration. A total of 88 biomedical researchers out of the 268 Spanish scientists who filled up the survey participated in the study. Different data analyses were performed to study the variables selected to measure the scientific collaboration and profile of Spanish researchers abroad. Results: There is a high level of cooperation between Spanish health science researchers abroad and international institutions, which contrasts with the small-scale collaboration with national institutions. Host countries facilitate this collaboration with national and international scientific institutions to a larger extent than the level of collaboration promotion carried out by Spanish institutions. Conclusions: The national collaboration with Spanish researchers abroad in the health sciences is limited. Thus, the practice of making appropriate use of the potential of their expertise should be promoted and the opportunities for Spanish health science researchers to return home should be improved. During the past decades, sensory evaluation of food quality has evolved and grown into a discipline that covers sensory and consumer research of foods and beverages. The present review deals with those aspects of the development in which I have been personally involved and have considered inspiring and important subject matters in the field. They are consumer responses to (1) salt, (2) fat, and (3) unfamiliar foods; (4) food choice and socio-cognitive segmentation, (5) responses to food in the elderly and young; and (6) genetic origins of food preferences. Perspectives of the field and of these specific areas are discussed, and some “words of wisdom” are offered for the younger generation of sensory-consumer researchers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
