Weeds are the major constraint to realize the potential yield of potato crop (Solanum tuberosum) grown under a poplar-based agroforestry system.The objective of the study was to increase the productivity of the poplar-potato intercropping system through the optimization of tree-crop planting geometry with a selection of appropriate weed control measures. Two planting geometries each of poplar (8 m × 2.5 m, 7 m × 3 m paired at 2.5 m) and potato (65 cm × 18.5 cm, 75 cm × 15 cm) with six weed control treatments (atrazine 0.250 kg ha−1, metribuzin 0.350 kg ha−1, paraquat 0.300 kg ha−1, clodinafop + metribuzin 0.270 kg ha−1, weed free check and weedy check) were investigated for two years (2017–18 and 2018–19). It was observed that these applied herbicides had no phytotoxic effect on the 5 and 6-year-old poplar trees. Broad-leaved weeds dominated the sedges under the poplar-potato based agroforestry system. The potato planting geometry 75 cm × 15 cm recorded a higher weed suppressing ability till 90 days after planting (DAP). Intercropping of potatoes at 75 cm × 15 cm spacing under poplar plantation (8 m × 2.5 m) produced higher tuber weight hill−1 (343.6 and 281.6 g hill−1) and increased tuber yield by 21.8% (averaged over both years) in comparison to other poplar-potato planting geometry with clodinafop + metribuzin 0.270 kg ha−1. This herbicide recorded a nearly 84.2% decrease in total weed biomass at 90 DAP with an increased tuber yield up to 50% (29.3 and 28.9 Mg ha−1) than the weedy check (19.6 and 19.3 Mg ha−1). Findings imply that an integrated effect of poplar spacing 8 m × 2.5 m with closer potato planting geometry (75 cm × 15 cm) applied with clodinafop + metribuzin 0.270 kg ha−1 proved to be the best combination for improving the productivity of potatoes under poplar based agroforestry system. The research was carried out in order to study the molecular mechanisms of herbicide binding (pinoxaden, quizalofop-P-tefuril, prometrin, metribuzin, metsulfuron-methyl) with target proteins (acetyl-CoA-carboxylase, acetolactate synthase, cytochrome P450, 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase) of weeds growing in Siberia: common wild oat (Avena fatua L.), couch grass (Elymus repens (L.) Gould), red-root amaranthus (Amaranthus retroflexus L.), white gauze (Chenopodium album L.), and green foxtail (Setaria viridis (L) P Beauv). The study was carried out in Novosibirsk oblast in 2022–2023. Using the bioinformatic methods, virtual three-dimensional complexes of pesticides and their targets have been created. A new approach to identifying the parameters of the cavity of binding sites is proposed, which consists in combining the alignment method and the machine-learning technology. Docking of pesticides with targets has been carried out. Calculation of the binding energy indicates a high degree of stability of the ligand-protein complexes. The proposed in silico approach may be useful for elucidating the behavior of herbicides when bound to weed enzymes. This approach allows a deeper understanding of the mechanism of action and ecotoxicological aspects of pesticide use. The complexes of herbicides and proteins involved have a potential high stability due to the low energy of binding to receptors, which varies from –5.60 to –13.24 kcal/mol. The value of the binding energy has not shown a direct dependence on the number of amino acid residues of the ligand-binding site. In general, the study has complemented some aspects of the molecular mechanisms of herbicide binding to weed target proteins; however, more in-depth study is required in order to localize critical amino acid points involved in the biological functions of target proteins. The quick detection and knowledge on dynamic dissipation of photosynthetic energy processes may improve weed management. This work aimed to evaluate the dynamic dissipation of photosynthetic energy of fleabane (Conyza spp.) upon PSII- and PSI-inhibitor (photosystem I and II) herbicides application. Treatments were comprised of the application of metribuzin (PSII) and paraquat (PSI), following recommended doses for fleabane plants (40 days after germination: 10 to 12 leaves), and an untreated check. Chlorophyll a fluorescence transient was performed at 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 8, 24, 48 and 96 h after application (HAA) and gas exchange analysis was performed at 2, 4 and 96 HAA. Injury symptoms analysis was performed at all previously mentioned time points plus 7, 14, 21, and 28 days after application (DAA). Injury symptoms were observed at 7 DAA and 2 HAA of PSII- and PSI-inhibitors, respectively, while changes in the dynamic dissipation of photosynthetic energy were observed in both cases at 0.5 HAA. At 0.5 and 1 HAA, plants showed a decrease in QA− (quinone) re-oxidation per reaction center and reduction in electron transport yield from QA− to the end electron acceptor of the PSI, for both herbicides. Moreover, plants showed a 90% decline in the performance index and an increase in energy dissipation as heat and fluorescence. Fleabane showed a significant decrease in net assimilation rate (CO2), transpiration rate and stomatal conductance within 1 HAA, for both herbicides. Therefore, PSII- and PSI-inhibitor herbicides presented a rapid negative effect on photosynthetic energy dynamics that can be monitored before the appearance of injury symptoms, which demonstrates the potential use of chlorophyll fluorescence in the rapid screening of metabolic perturbations caused by herbicides. The bioremediation effects of metribuzin-degrading bacterium Bacillus cereus N1 immobilized with corn straw biochar (BC) were studied. The results showed that 72.15% of strain N1 and 15.31% of metribuzin was adsorbed by BC, with the highest absorption peak intensity obtained by the immobilized bacterial microspheres (PSBN1). The Mechanism of PSBN1 removal of metribuzin was investigated using scanning electron microscopy, distribution and mass transfer pathways of metribuzin in PSBN1, and adsorption kinetics and isotherms of BC. A total of 62.26% of metribuzin was degraded by PSBN1 in 120 d of storage at 4 °C, which could be reused for 7 times with the degradation efficiency maintained above 75%. The optimal degradation conditions of metribuzin were determined to obtain the degradation rate of 92.48% in 5 d. The degradation rates of metribuzin reached 84.12% and 83.73% in sterilized and non-sterilized soils, respectively, in 28 d. The bioremediation effect of PSBN1 was verified by the maximum recovery rate (183%) of fresh plant weight in metribuzin sensitive crop and the greatly restored soil enzymatic activities. To conclude, PSBN1 was suitable for extended storage time with high degradation efficiency maintained, providing strong experimental evidence to support the commercialization and long-term preservation of metribuzin-degrading microbial agents. Biochar-amended soils influence the degradation of herbicides depending on the pyrolysis temperature, application rate, and feedstock used. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of sugarcane straw biochar (BC) produced at different pyrolysis temperatures (350 °C, 550 °C, and 750 °C) and application rates in soil (0, 0.1, 0.5, 1, 1.5, 5, and 10% w/w) on metribuzin degradation and soil microbiota. Detection analysis of metribuzin in the soil to find time for 50% and 90% metribuzin degradation (DT50 and DT90) was performed using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Soil microbiota was analyzed by respiration rate (C-CO2), microbial biomass carbon (MBC), and metabolic quotient (qCO2). BC350 °C-amended soil at 10% increased the DT50 of metribuzin from 7.35 days to 17.32 days compared to the unamended soil. Lower application rates (0.1% to 1.5%) of BC550 °C and BC750 °C decreased the DT50 of metribuzin to ~4.05 and ~5.41 days, respectively. BC350 °C-amended soil at high application rates (5% and 10%) provided high C-CO2, low MBC fixation, and high qCO2. The addition of low application rates (0.1% to 1.5%) of sugarcane straw biochar produced at high temperatures (BC550 °C and BC750 °C) resulted in increased metribuzin degradation and may influence the residual effect of the herbicide and weed control efficiency. Pesticide preparations based on benomyl, metribuzin and imidacloprid were used on a potato plot for three years. Every year soil samples were taken at 0, 7, 14, 28, 56 and 84 days after treatment. For all samples, the pesticide residues in the soil were measured. A study of the soil's bacterial and fungal community structures was preformed using next-generation sequencing. It was found that the rate of decomposition of the pesticides increased every year, while the pesticides affected only certain phylogenetic groups of microorganisms. The most significant effect was the decrease in the proportion of Ascomycota. Additionally, in the field, as well as previously in the laboratory, pesticides have had an impact on the relative abundance of the genera Haliangium, Solicoccozyma and Humicola. It can be assumed that the repeated application of pesticides does not have a significant effect on the microbial communities of soils, provided that they are applied according to the application rate. The article focuses on investigating the efficacy of the new herbicide clodinafop propargil+ metribuzin for weed control in wheat fields in Fars province, Iran. It study aims to determine the most appropriate dose, compare the effectiveness of the new herbicide with existing ones, and assess the reaction of wheat to the herbicide.

Introduction Rain-fed Lentil (Lens culinaris Medik.) is vulnerable to weed competition because of its tiny stature, slow establishment, and limited vegetative growth. Weed control is necessary for maximum seed yield and seed quality. Crop yield losses are primarily a result of competition with weeds for nutrients, moisture and space. Therefore, weed control at this period plays an important role to gain high roduction. Although the vast majority of lentil production is under rain-fed conditions, there is a little published information on weed control with herbicides in rain-fed lentils. Herbicides due to efficiency and expense savings play a essential role in weed control. The purpose of this research was to determine the best time to application effective herbicides in weeds control for the maximum rain-fed Lentil production in Khorramabad. Materials and Methods The Lentil (Lens culinaris Medik.) field experiment was carried out as split plot based on complete randomized block design with three replications during 2017-2018 in Khorramabad (48.21°E, 33.29°N, 1170 m above sea level, 450 mm average yearly precipitation) Iran. The following herbicides were used: Oxyfluorfen (EC 24%) 1 Li ha-1, Isoxaflutole (SC 480) 200 Ml ha-1, Flumetsulam(WG 800) 20 g ha-1, Metribuzin (WP 70%) 500g ha-1, Pendimethalin Aria(EC33%) 4 li ha-1, Pendimethalin Prowl (CS45.5%) 4li ha-1, Imazethapyr (SL10%) 350 ml ha-1 and Pendimethalin prowl 2li ha-1plus Imazethapyr 350 ml ha-1. Herbicide applicatioin time at 3 levels; IAP application (Immediately after planting), PRE application and IBCE (eraly post herbicide application at fourth lentil node stage) was assigned to the main and sub plots respectively. The fields were in wheat cultivation in the year before the experiments. The soil at the test sites was a silty loam with a pH of 7.9 and organic matter of 1.11%. Lentil was sown at a density of 75 kg seed ha-1 by hand on December 21, 2017. Herbicides were sprayed with an electric knapsack sprayer MATABI (calibrated to deliver 300 L ha-1. In order to evaluate the effect of treatments on weeds density and biomass, at the beginning of lentil flowering, sampling was done from a surface of 0.3 m-2 area and weed density and weed biomass recorded. At lentil physiological maturity, the yield and yield components were measured by harvesting lentil plants from a 1-m2 area in each plot (Izadi & Maghsoudi, 1400). The data were subjected to the analysis of variance using SAS. Means were compared using Duncan's Multiple Range test at P=0.05 level of significance. Results and Discussion The results indicated that the lowest weed density and weed biomass were associated with Flumetsulam and Prowl plus Imazethapyr. The average weed densities for the postemergence and preemergence treatments of the eight evaluated herbicides were 14.9% and 31.0% lower, respectively, compared to the herbicide application immediately after planting. The least herbicide injury effects on the Lentil crop were assigned to the Pendimethalin Aria, Pendimethalin Prowl, Prowl plus Imazethapyr, Imazethapyr and Flumetsulam. In the case of Oxyfluorfen herbicide, weed density for early postemergence application treatment was 84.1% lower than in PRE application. In the case of Isoxaflutole herbicide, the mean weed density for application immediately after planting was 79.3% lower than for early post-application. In the case of Flumetsulam herbicide, the mean of weed biomass for application immediately after planting was 73.3% and 66.6% less than preemergence and early post-application, respectively. With the exception of Flumetsulam herbicide, there was no significant difference between the different herbicide application times in terms of weed biomass. The highest average Lentil grain yield per unit area was observed when Flumetsulam herbicide was applied immediately after planting. On the other hand, the lowest average Lentil grain yield per unit area was recorded when Isoxaflutole herbicide was applied immediately after planting. No significant differences in Lentil grain yield per unit area were found between the different application times for the herbicides Metribuzin and Imazethapyr. Based on cluster analysis grouping of relative efficacy of control treatments, immediately after planting application or preemergence application of Flumetsulam and early postemergence application of Imazethapyr were better than the other herbicide treatments for Lentil weed control, whereas the lowest relative efficacy was related to preemergence application of Oxyfluorfen, immediately after planting application of Isoxaflutole and Metribuzin, and preemergence application of Pendimethalin Arya. Conclusion Based on the results of this research, the application of flumezolam immediately after planting (20 g ha-1) and imazatapir(350 ml ha-1) as pre-emergence application have had more efficiency for weed control in lentil than other herbicide treatments, while the pre-emergent application of oxyfluorfen, the application immediately after planting of isoxaflotel and metribyozin have had the effects of plant burning on lentil crops and the pendimethalin Aria herbicide is not recommended in lentil farms because of to the lack of control of broadleaf weeds under normal conditions in lentil fields. In general, among the experimental treatments, in terms of the level of control efficiency and the level of safety for the lentil crop, the application of flumetsulam immediately after planting was the best herbicide treatment. In the present work, degradation of the herbicide metribuzin (C8H14N4OS) has been performed. A novel metribuzin-degrading bacterium, Olivibacter oleidegradans strain SP01, was isolated from the metribuzin-contaminated soil by an enrichment technique. To investigate the effect of various parameters on metribuzin degradation, various experiments were performed at an initial concentration in the range of 20-100 mg.L-1, a pH of 5-9, and a temperature of 25-40°C. Around 85% of the highest percentage degradation of metribuzin was obtained at a concentration of 20 mg.L-1 in 120 h under optimized conditions. The current work for the Metribuzin degradation study fits well with first-order reactions. Also, at higher concentrations, i.e., 100 mg.L-1, only 40.3% degradation of metribuzin was observed. The Olivibacter oleidegradans strain SP01 has the potential to be extremely beneficial in the removal of Metribuzin from the environment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Glyphosate has been widely used to control annual, perennial, and biennial weeds including Conyza species. Conyza sumatrensis (Sumatran fleabane) is considered a highly invasive and troublesome weed worldwide, including in European and Mediterranean regions. In Turkey, the use of glyphosate in orchards has recently increased; however, extensive use of glyphosate has resulted in poor control of C. sumatrensis in several peach orchards. The objectives of this research were to determine if C. sumatrensis is resistant to glyphosate and identify alternative herbicides with different modes of action that can be used instead of glyphosate. Two dose response studies were conducted in the greenhouse to evaluate the response of four C. sumatrensis populations to glyphosate, chlorsulfuron, and metribuzin. Glyphosate isopropyl amine and glyphosate potassium was applied at 0, 0.25, 0.5, 1, 2, 4, and 8 times the use rate of 1080 g a.e./ha (a.e. indicates acid equivalent) when the plants were at rosette (5-6 true leaves) and vegetative (20-22 cm tall) stages. Effects of both glyphosate formulations were combined. The resistant populations showed higher resistance 3.8 to 6.6 and 5.3 to 7.8 times at rosette stage and vegetative stage, respectively, compared with the susceptible population. Furthermore, glyphosate-resistant populations were treated with chlorsulfuron and metribuzin at 0, 0.25, 0.5, 1, 2, 4, and 8 times use rate of 7.5 and 350 g a.i./ha, respectively at the rosette stage. The glyphosate-resistant populations exhibited 2.4 to 3.8 times more resistance to chlorsulfuron, but were adequately controlled with metribuzin.

Efficient termination of cover crops is an important component of cover crop management. Information on termination efficiency can help in devising management plans but estimating herbicide efficacy is a tedious task and potential remote sensing technologies and vegetative indices (VIs) have not been explored for this purpose. This study was designed to evaluate potential herbicide options for the termination of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), cereal rye (Secale cereale L.), hairy vetch (Vicia villosa Roth.), and rapeseed (Brassica napus L.), and to correlate different VIs with visible termination efficiency. Nine herbicides and one roller-crimping treatment were applied to each cover crop. Among different herbicides used, glyphosate, glyphosate + glufosinate, paraquat, and paraquat + metribuzin provided more than 95% termination for both wheat and cereal rye 28 days after treatment (DAT). For hairy vetch, 2,4-D + glufosinate and glyphosate + glufosinate, resulted in 99 and 98% termination efficiency, respectively, followed by 2,4-D + glyphosate and paraquat with 92% termination efficiency 28 DAT. No herbicide provided more than 90% termination of rapeseed and highest control was provided by paraquat (86%), 2,4-D + glufosinate (85%), and 2,4-D + glyphosate (85%). Roller-crimping (without herbicide application) did not provide effective termination of any cover crop with 41, 61, 49, and 43% termination for wheat, cereal rye, hairy vetch, and rapeseed, respectively. Among the VIs, Green Leaf Index had the highest Pearson correlation coefficient for wheat (r = -0.786, p = <0.0001) and cereal rye (r = -0.804, p = <0.0001) with visible termination efficiency rating. Whereas for rapeseed, the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) had the highest correlation coefficient (r = -0.655, p = <0.0001). The study highlighted the need for tankmixing 2,4-D or glufosinate with glyphosate for termination instead of blanket application of glyphosate alone for all crops including rapeseed and other broadleaf cover crops. The use of herbicides can significantly affect the processes of plant photosynthesis, as it leads to inhibition of pigment production, impairs the transport of electrons in the respiratory chain and carbon fixation. The purpose of the study is to determine the effect of herbicide application on weediness and photosynthetic activity of soybeans. On the basis of a field study in the conditions of the Educational and Scientific Center of the Lviv National University of Nature Management, the dependence of soybean yield on the level of weediness of the culture was established. The highest yield of soybeans - 29.0 t/ha was obtained in the application of the herbicide Primekstra TZ Gold 500 SC c.s. (4.5 l/ha), the smallest - 27.3 t/ha among the experimental variants was obtained with the post-emergence application of the herbicide Pulsar s.c. (1 l/ha). Application of herbicide Primekstra TZ Gold 500 SC c.s. did not affect the intensity of photosynthesis, and the number of pigments in soybean leaves was not significantly different from the indicator in the control. The use of drugs Kommand k.e. and Pulsar s.c. led to a slight decrease in the number of pigments in the first days after application and their gradual stabilization. Use of the herbicide Concur c.s. had the effect of weakening photosynthetic activity and reducing the number of pigments. This indicates that the active substance metribuzin is not absolutely selective with regard to the effect on soybean plants, that is, in the case of its use, there is a probability of suppressing the culture. The practical significance of the obtained results lies in revealing the possibilities for choosing effective herbicides with increased selective phytotoxicity, which provide effective control of the number of weeds with a minimal probability of a negative impact of herbicides on the soybean agrocenosis. The introduction and large scale cultivation of wheat cultivars which are semi-dwarf and high yielding in the north-western Indo-Gangetic Plains (IGPs) of India has led to the dominance of wheat mimicking weed, Phalaris minor Retz. Over the period, this weed has become a highly competitive and pernicious weed of wheat in rice–wheat cropping system resulting in huge yield losses. In 1978, the herbicide isoproturon was adopted on large scale to control P. minor in wheat fields and remained as most feasible option for its chemical control. However, P. minor populations have developed resistance over time as a result of continuos application of same herbicide. This herbicide resistance started from isoproturon with 0.8 m ha area to several herbicides like sulfosulfuron, clodinafop, metribuzin, fenoxaprop, pinoxaden, mesosulfuron + iodosulfuron and clodinafop + metribuzin in 7.5 m ha today. Out of 7.5 m ha, 3 m ha was observed under multiple herbicide resistance. To check the herbicide resistant P. minor populations, farmers adopted mixing post-emergence (POE) herbicides with metribuzin as well as its early POE application through fertilizer dust 2–3 days after first irrigation of wheat, and sequential application of pre-emergence (PRE) pyroxasulfone / pendimethalin / metribuzin followed by POE application of pinoxaden / clodinafop / mesosulfuron + iodosulfuron / clodinafop + metribuzin (low dose) in rice–wheat cropping zone of the IGPs of India. Therefore, considering the importance of herbicide resistance and its alarming situation in the region, this review presents the history of evolution of herbicide resistance in P. minor, its present status, management strategies and severity that causes a dent in the sustainability of wheat production under the rice–wheat cropping system of IGPs. In addition, for long-term management of resistance and maintenance of the sustainability of wheat yields, herbicides should be supplemented with integrated weed management strategies like soil solarization, crop rotation, use of crop residue management practices, growing of wheat cultivars with early crop vigour, timely application of herbicides with optimum dose, optimum seed rate, closer row spacing, use of microbial herbicides, exploring the potential use of allelochemicals and correct spray techniques are some of viable options for farmers to avoid losses from this troublesome weed and increasing wheat productivity. The present experiment was conducted to evaluate the metribuzin-induced stress response in Vigna radiata and to explore the ameliorative role of exogenous application of plant growth regulators (PGRs) against metribuzin toxicity by assessing important biochemical and yield parameters. Prior to the field experiment, dose standardization experiments were performed, and EC50 was calculated for metribuzin. On day 21, field grown V. radiata plants were treated with graded concentrations of metribuzin (0–1000 mg L - 1 ). Plants treated with 600 mg L - 1 (EC50) and 1000 mg L - 1 (highest dose) of metribuzin were co-treated individually and simultaneously with gibberellic acid-3 (GA), indole-3 acetic acid (IAA), and salicylic acid (SA). After 7 days of treatment, leaf tissues were analyzed for biochemical parameters, whereas those related to yield were recorded during harvest. The result of this study indicated that metribuzin treatment to V. radiata resulted in increase in lipid peroxidation and reduce chlorophyll and carotenoid contents as well as yield parameters. However, metribuzin-treated plants induced proline accumulation and activity of antioxidant enzymes. Exogenous application of GA, IAA, and SA significantly reduced lipid peroxidation and increased contents of photosynthetic pigments, proline, and antioxidant enzymes thereby increasing yield parameters. It was observed that during metribuzin stress, SA exhibited a better ameliorative response out of the three exogenously applied PGRs, while the combined use of all PGRs exhibited much improved ameliorative response on biochemical and yield parameters of plants. The aim of the study was to evaluate the content and uptake of macronutrients (P, Ca, Mg, K) in Solanum tuberosum tubers and the effect of care with biostimulants from a three-year field experiment conducted at the Agricultural Experimental Station in Zawady, Poland. The experiment was set up in a split-plot arrangement with three replications. The first factor was two varieties of edible potato (Oberon and Malaga), and the second factor was five treatments with herbicide and biostimulants: (I) control facility, (II) herbicide (chlomazone + metribuzin), (III) herbicide and biostimulant PlonoStart, (IV) herbicide and biostimulant Aminoplant, (V) herbicide and biostimulant Agro-Sorb Folium. Biostimulants and herbicide increased the concentration of P, Mg, Ca, and K compared to tubers harvested from the control facility. The Oberon variety had the highest macro-nutrient uptake capacity. The application of herbicide with biostimulants increased the uptake of the mentioned mineral nutrients compared to the control variant. Research was conducted to determine the content of total polyphenols (TP) in table potato tubers obtained in a three-year field experiment arranged as a split-plot design with three replicates. The first experimental factor included two potato cultivars: Oberon and Malaga, the second one being an application of the following biostimulants: PlonoStart, Aminoplant, Agro-Sorb Folium and the herbicide Avatar 293 ZC (clomazone + metribuzin). The polyphenol content of potato tubers was determined in the fresh tuber mass by the spectrophotometric method with the Folin-Ciocalteu reagent. The tuber content of polyphenols was affected by cultivars and test biostimulants. Cv. Malaga accumulated more polyphenols than cv. Oberon. Biostimulants + herbicide significantly increased the accumulation of polyphenolic compounds compared with tubers cultivated in the control unit, which were not treated with the test products. Metribuzin (MBN) is a selective herbicide that adversely damages the vital organs of the body including the liver. Pratensein (PTN) is a novel flavonoid that exhibits marvelous medicinal properties. This experimental trial commenced to elucidate the pharmacotherapeutic strength of PTN to counteract MBN provoked liver toxicity in rats. Thirty-six male albino rats (Rattus norvegicus) were categorized into four groups i.e., the control, MBN (133.33 mg/kg), MBN (133.33 mg/kg) + PTN (20 mg/kg) and PTN (20 mg/kg) alone treated group. Our findings revealed that MBN exposure promoted the expressions of Keap-1 as well as concentrations of ROS and MDA while reducing the gene expressions of Nrf-2 as well as activities of catalase (CAT), glutathione Peroxidase (GPx), glutathione reductase (GSR), heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione (GSH) contents. The levels of albumin and total proteins were reduced whereas the levels of alkaline phosphatase (ALP), gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) were enhanced following the MBN administration. Moreover, the gene expression of transforming growth Factor–β1 (TGF-β1), matrix metallopeptidase-2 (MMP-2), matrix metallopeptidase-9 (MMP-9), collagen, type I, alpha 1 and type-3 alpha were escalated in response to MBN intoxication. Furthermore, MBN administration cause a sudden upregulation in the levels of NF-κB, IL-1β, TNF-α, IL-6 & COX-2. Besides, MBN exposure enhanced the gene expression of Bax and Caspase-3 while reducing the gene expression of PI3K, Akt and Bcl-2. Additionally, MBN exposure dysregulated the normal histology of liver. Assessing the adaptability and stability of herbicide-tolerant lentil accessions to two broad-spectrum post-emergence herbicides in multi-environment trials has become a must in a breeding program to improve its selection. The adaptability and stability of 42 herbicide-tolerant lentil accessions were investigated using five stability parameters under eight different environments. Significant Genotype–Environment (GE) interaction was found for days to flowering (DFLR), days to maturity (DMAT), and seed yield per plant (SY). The analyzed stability parameters such as Cultivar superiority, Finlay–Wilkinson, Shukla, Static Stability, and Wricke's Ecovalence ranked the tested accessions differently, confirming the importance of using a combination of stability parameters when evaluating the performance of a group of accessions. GGE biplot of the SY trait accounted for 60.79% of sums of squares of the GE interaction and showed that cool and high rainfall environments are ideal for testing the agronomic performance of tolerant accessions. The GGE biplot of SY showed that IG4605(19), IG195(6), and IG156635(12) were specifically adapted to one mega environment, whereas IG70056(38) was identified as a superior line having a high and stable yield. A two-factor field experiment was carried out in 2018-2020 at the Zawady Agricultural Experimental Station (52°03' N and 22°33' E) belonging to the University of Natural Sciences and Humanities in Siedlce in Poland. Tubers of two edible potato cultivars were investigated, i.e. Oberon and Malaga - factor one; in turn, factor two included variants of herbicide application with biostimulators: 1. control object - without preparations, 2. herbicide clomazone + metribuzin (Avatar 293 ZC), 3. herbicide clomazone + metribuzin and biostimulant PlonoStart, 4. herbicide clomazone + metribuzin and biostimulant Aminoplant, 5. herbicide clomazone + metribuzin and biostimulant Agro-Sorb® Folium. The biostimulators used in the research significantly increased the content of total nitrogen and protein nitrogen in tubers, as well as the share of protein nitrogen in total nitrogen in relation to the tubers collected from the control object. As one of the triazine herbicides with widespread usage in agriculture, metribuzin exerted nonnegligible hazardous effects on plants via excessive accumulation of reactive oxygen species and destruction of antioxidant enzymes, but the underlying harmful mechanism of metribuzin-induced oxidative damage to plants has never been exploited. Here, Arabidopsis thaliana glutathione reductase 2 (AtGR2) was employed as the biomarker to evaluate the adverse impacts of metribuzin on plants. The fluorescence intensity of AtGR2 was decreased based on the static quenching mechanism with the prediction of a single binding site toward metribuzin, and the complex formation was presumed to be mainly impelled by hydrogen bonding and van der Waals forces from the negative ΔH and ΔS. In addition, the loosened and unfolded skeleton of AtGR2 along with the increased hydrophilicity around the tryptophan residues were investigated. Besides, the glutathione reductase activity of AtGR2 was also destroyed due to structural and conformational changes. At last, the severe inhibiting growth of Arabidopsis seedling roots was discovered under metribuzin exposure. Hence, the evaluation of the molecular interaction mechanism of AtGR2 with metribuzin will establish valuable assessments of the toxic effects of metribuzin on plants. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An effective nano‐adsorbent has been synthesized by the modification of magnetite nanoparticles with ionic‐liquid modified calix[4]arene through covalent linkage. This nanocomposite was used for the removal of amino‐functionalized nitrogenous pesticides, metribuzin (MET), and dicloran (DIC) from an aqueous solution through adsorption. The adsorption studies showed that the synthesized nanomaterial was effective in removing these pollutants from an aqueous solution. The maximum adsorption capacity for MET and DIC were 5.88 and 1.94 mg g−1, respectively. The effect of various factors, such as dosage, pH, and temperature, were studied on the adsorptive removal of MET and DIC. The adsorption was observed to follow Freundlich isotherm and pseudo‐second‐order kinetics for MET and DIC. The nano‐adsorbent was stable and reusable even after the third cycle. In this study, a biochar obtained from poplar wood gasification at a temperature of 850 °C was used to adsorb the xenoestrogens 4-tert-octylphenol (OP) and bisphenol A (BPA) and the herbicide metribuzin from water. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM-EDX) and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy were employed to investigate the surface micromorphology and functional groups composition of biochar, respectively. The study of sorption kinetics showed that all compounds achieved the steady state in less than 2 h, according to a pseudo-second order model, which denoted the formation of strong bonds (chemisorption) between biochar and the compounds. Adsorption isotherms data were described by the Henry, Freundlich, Langmuir and Temkin equations. At temperatures of 10 and 30 °C, the equilibrium data of the compounds were generally better described by the Freundlich model, although, in some cases, high correlation coefficients (r ≥ 0.98) were obtained for more than one model. Freundlich constants, KF, for OP, BPA and metribuzin were, respectively, 218, 138 and 4 L g−1 at 10 °C and 295, 243 and 225 L g−1 at 30 °C, indicating a general increase of adsorption at higher temperature. Desorption of all compounds, especially OP and BPA, from biochar was slow and very scarce, denoting an irreversible and hysteretic process. Comparing the results of this study with those reported in the literature, we can conclude that the present biochar has a surprising ability to retain organic compounds almost permanently, thus behaving as an excellent low-cost biosorbent. Poor control of Amaranthus spp. with herbicides inhibiting acetolactate synthase (ALS) has been observed for several years in soybean fields in north-eastern Italy, but to date only a few ALS-resistant populations have been confirmed. An extensive sampling of putatively resistant Amaranthus accessions was completed in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region, across an arable land area of about 3000 km2. In total, 58 accessions were tested to confirm their resistance status, recognize the Amaranthus species, identify the mutant ALS alleles endowing the resistance and determine the efficacy of 3 pre-emergence herbicides. Most accessions resulted in cross-resistance to thifensulfuron-methyl and imazamox. Genomic DNA were extracted from single seeds with a newly developed protocol; an allele-specific PCR assay revealed the presence of the 574-leucine in 20 accessions, of the 574-methionine in 22, and of both alleles in 9 accessions. The two variants showed a different spatial distribution. All resistant populations were ascribed to A. hybridus. A. hybridus resistant to ALS herbicides is well-established in this Italian region and its resistance is due to two ALS mutant alleles. Metribuzin, clomazone and metobromuron can be used as alternative herbicides to be applied in pre-emergence and they should be integrated into the management strategies to limit the spread of resistance. Exploiting water and nutrients by crop plants is limiting by abundance of undesirable plant species viz weeds due to their competitiveness ability, affecting crop productivity and quality. Thus, over two seasons of 2017 and 2018, field experiment was carried out at the Experimental Farm of Faculty of Agriculture, Ain Shams University, Egypt to study the response of maize grain yield and its nutrient constituents and associated weeds to two irrigation intervals (every 15 and 22 days), three weed control treatments (hoeing twice, metribuzin, and unweeded) as well as three nitrogen forms (ammonium nitrate, ammonium sulfate, and urea). The tested factors distributed in a strip plots design with four replications. The results showed that dry weight of grasses (56.1 g m−2) and total weeds (67.2 g m−2) were lower with irrigation every 15 day. Irrigation every 15 day gave the maximum increase in plant height (233 cm), ear length (18.4 cm), ear diameter (4.7 cm), 100 grain weight (28.0 g), grain yield (7.58 ton ha−1) and leaf P (0.29%) and K (2.07%) contents. Hoeing gave the lowest biomass of grasses, total weeds and weeds potassium content, while metribuzin was the superior in diminishing broadleaf weed biomass. Hoeing was as similar as metribuzin as in enhancing plant height, ear length, 100 grain weight and grain yield ton ha–1. Nitrogen (N) form had no significant effect on weed biomass. However, ammonium nitrate was the most effective form at promoting 100 grain weight, ear length, grain yield ton ha–1 and maize leaf potassium content. Results exhibited that irrigating maize fields every 15 day × hoeing or metribuzin × ammonium sulfate–N could be a combatable and integrative pattern for diminishing weed growth and keeping crop productivity. The aim of the study was to determine the effect of mechanical and chemical treatments with the application of biostimulants on the effectiveness of weed infestation reduction and potato yielding. A three-year field research study was conducted at the Agricultural Experimental Station Zawady (52°03′ N; 22°33′ E). The field experiment was set up in a split-plot design with three replicates. The first factor was the two edible potato cultivars, and the second was five methods of mechanical and chemical treatments with biostimulants: (1) control object—mechanical weeding, (2) the herbicide Avatar 293 ZC (clomazone + metribuzin), (3) the herbicide Avatar 293 ZC and the biostimulant PlonoStart, (4) the herbicide Avatar 293 ZC and the biostimulant Aminoplant, (5) the herbicide Avatar 293 ZC and the biostimulant Agro-Sorb Folium. Before emergence, the control object was double ridging and single ridging with harrowing and double ridging after emergence. On other objects (2–5) before emergence, two ridgings were applied. The assessment of weed infestation was performed using the quantitative weight method on two dates: about 2 weeks after the application of the herbicide and biostimulants and before the potato tubers harvest. The herbicide and the herbicide with biostimulants applied to the potato crop showed a positive influence in reducing the number and fresh weight of weeds compared to mechanical-only treatments. The highest effectiveness, calculated on the basis of the number and fresh mass of weeds, was found on the fifth object. It was, on average, 70.5 and 71.6% for cultivars, respectively. Research into the use of biostimulants in potato cultivation will continue due to the pro-environmental nature of biostimulants and the importance of this crop. Bonechar presents high sorption capacity for mobile herbicides retained in soil and water. However, its use in a granulated and/or powder form makes it difficult to remove water. The objective of this study was to produce a cellulose acetate film with bonechar as a viable alternative to remove metribuzin from water. The treatments were composed of 2 and 3 g of bonechar fixed on a cellulose acetate film, pure bonechar, and a control (no bonechar). The sorption and desorption study was carried out in the equilibrium batch mode with five concentrations of metribuzin (0.25, 0.33, 0.5, 1, and 2 mg L−1). The water used in the experiment was potable water. Herbicide analysis was performed by High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). The addition of 2 and 3 g of the bonechar fixed on the acetate film sorbed 40% and 60%, respectively, of the metribuzin at the lowest concentrations (0.25, 0.33, and 0.5 mg L−1). For both additions, desorption was low, being 7% and 2.5% at 24 and 120 h, respectively. There are still no reports of the production of cellulose acetate film with bonechar for herbicide removal in water, considered an alternative of easy handling and indicated for water treatment plants. Phytotoxicity, cytotoxicity and genotoxicity of pesticides with various mechanisms of targeted activity were studied in a hydroponic culture of 2-day-old seedlings of Triticum aestivum. All studied pesticides (with the exception of metribuzin) exhibited dose-dependent phytotoxicity (inhibited the growth of the main root and reduced the yield of root biomass). All studied pesticides did not affect mitotic index in the root apex meristem but did affect the duration of some phases of mitosis. Herbicides increased, while fungicides, on the contrary, decreased the duration of the cytokinesis phase. All pesticides (1 μg/mL) exhibited genotoxic activity: in the root apex meristem the number of cells with mitotic abnormalities was significantly higher than in the control variant (7–14 times). The genotoxic activity of metribuzin and tebuconazole was 2 times lower than for tribenuron-methyl, fenoxaprop-P-ethyl, epoxiconazole and azoxystrobin. Metribuzin is a pre- and post-emergence triazinone herbicide used in a variety of crops. This herbicide is degraded in the environment into three major metabolites that have high water solubility, high to very high soil mobility, and low to moderate persistence in soil. This paper describes the development of an analytical method based on ultrasound-assisted extraction and GC-MS/MS determination for the determination metribuzin and its main metabolites in soil and plants. The developed method provided good recoveries for all compounds in soil and plants (from 73 to 121%). The quantitation limits obtained from plants (2.6 to 18 µg/kg) allow determining the presence of these compounds at trace levels. To evaluate the applicability of the developed methods, bean plants were grown in plastic pots with soil treated with metribuzin and collected after 23 days. At the end of the assay, only 11% of the initial concentration of metribuzin remained in soil. Metribuzin and its three metabolites were detected in plants, desamino-diketo-metribuzin is the most abundant metabolite. A field experiment was conducted to find out the effect of potato cultivar (Radosa, Amigo, Marik, Revera and Gerla) and Metribuzin herbicide (Control, 4 days, 8 day and 12 days after planting) (control, pre emergence, post emergence and late post emergence) on growth, and productivity, in a split plot design in RCBD, with 3 replications. Main plots were potato cultivars and subplots were time application of Metribuzin after planting of the tubers in the field. Results shows that Revera potato cultivar had the highest means of leaf area, aerial stem number, dry matter, tuber weight and total yield and caused a significant reduction in the dry matter of weed plants. Time of herbicide application also had a significant effect on trait studies in this investigation. Applying Metribuzin (0.75 Kg/ha) to the soil after 8 days of tuber planting in the field caused statistical increase in leaf area, number of aerial stem, dry matter and tuber weight. Nanoformulations have been used to improve the delivery of fertilizers, pesticides, and growth regulators, with a focus on more sustainable agriculture. Nanoherbicide research has focused on efficiency gains through targeted delivery and environmental risk reduction. However, research on the behavior and safety of the application of these formulations in cropping systems is still limited. Organic matter contained in cropping systems can change the dynamics of herbicide–soil interactions in the presence of nanoformulations. The aim of this study was to use classical protocols from regulatory studies to understand the retention and mobility dynamics of a metribuzin nanoformulation, compared to a conventional formulation. We used different soil systems and soil with added fresh organic material. The batch method was used for sorption–desorption studies and soil thin layer chromatography for mobility studies, both by radiometric techniques. Sorption parameters for both formulations showed that retention is a reversible process in all soil systems (H~1.0). In deep soil with added fresh organic material, nanoformulation was more sorbed (14.61 ± 1.41%) than commercial formulation (9.72 ± 1.81%) (p < 0.05). However, even with the presence of straw as a physical barrier, metribuzin in nano and conventional formulations was mobile in the soil, indicating that the straw can act as a barrier to reduce herbicide mobility but is not impeditive to herbicide availability in the soil. Our results suggest that environmental safety depends on organic material maintenance in the soil system. Our study investigated the effects of terbuthylazine (TBA) and metribuzin (MT) on rice and radish at field application concentrations. Both herbicides induced oxidative stress and severely inhibited growth in the two crops. However, the radish cultivar T-33 exhibited significantly lower stress levels compared to the sensitive cultivar S-24, suggesting its higher tolerance to TBA and MT. To explore the potential role of metabolism in this tolerance, we developed a novel HPLC-Q-TOF-MS method, which demonstrated excellent performance and identified 18 TBA and 20 MT metabolites, most of which were discovered in plants for the first time. The results revealed significantly higher accumulation of both herbicides in rice compared to radish, especially in the aerial parts, with increasing translocation in rice and the opposite trend in radish. Quantitative analysis revealed significantly higher levels of glycosylated MT products and amino acid conjugates in T-33 compared to S-24, suggesting their crucial role in detoxification and tolerance mechanisms. Our findings have significant implications for food safety, crop protection, and sustainable agricultural practices in regions employing vegetable-crop rotation systems.

Pendimethalin and metribuzin are combined to a suspoemulsion (SE) formulation that is treated as a pre-emergence and early post emergence herbicide. A simple reverse phase high performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) method has been validated and applied for the simultaneous analysis of metribuzin and pendimethalin contents in suspoemulsion formulation. The mobile phase for the method was acetonitrile: water (65:35v/v) at a flow rate of 1.0 mL/min, and quantification was accomplished at 237 nm. Hypersil ODS column was used for the method's development and validation. Metribuzin's and pendimethalin's RTs were found to be 3.6 and 11.9 min, respectively. The limit of detection was 0.03 mg/l and 0.04 mg/l for Metribuzin and Pendimethalin respectively. The limit of quantification values was 0.09 mg/l for metribuzin and pendimethalin. The linearity of proposed method was investigated in the range of 2.51 to 100.54 mg/l (r2 = 99997) and 0.25 to 9.80 mg/l (r2 = 99997) for Pendimethalin and Metribuzin respectively. Abstract Five field experiments were conducted at Huron Research Station near Exeter, Ontario, Canada, during 2018 to 2020 to assess the tolerance of strip‐till‐grown azuki bean to various preplant (PP) herbicides. The herbicides selected have activity on glyphosate‐resistant (GR) Canada fleabane, an emerging weed biotype in strip‐till azuki bean production. Saflufenacil, metribuzin, 2,4‐D ester, saflufenacil + metribuzin, saflufenacil + 2,4‐D ester, metribuzin + 2,4‐D ester, and saflufenacil + metribuzin + 2,4‐D ester, applied PP 1 week before seeding, at the proposed label rate (1X) and twice that rate (2X) caused as much as 6%, 5%, 6%, 7%, 8%, 10%, and 13% visible azuki bean injury. The herbicide‐induced azuki bean injury was transient and had no effect on plant density, aboveground dry biomass, height, maturity, and yield except for the dry biomass which was reduced by 28% with metribuzin + 2,4‐D ester and 36% with saflufenacil + metribuzin + 2,4‐D ester at the 2X rate and azuki bean height which was reduced 9% at the 2X rate with saflufenacil + metribuzin + 2,4‐D ester. Based on these results, saflufenacil, metribuzin, 2,4‐D ester, saflufenacil + metribuzin, saflufenacil + 2,4‐D ester, and metribuzin + 2,4‐D ester applied PP have potential for GR Canada fleabane control in strip‐till azuki beans. However, there is not enough crop safety for using a three‐way tankmix of saflufenacil + metribuzin + 2,4‐D ester, applied PP, in azuki bean production.

Acetolactate synthase (ALS) inhibiting herbicides (group 2) have been widely applied for the last 20 years to control Sinapis alba in cereal crops fromsouthern Spain. In 2008, a tribenuron-methyl (TM) resistant (R) S. alba population was first reported in a cereal field inMalaga (southern Spain). In 2018, three suspected R S. alba populations (R1, R2 and R3) to TM were collected from three different fields in Granada (southern Spain, 100 km away from Malaga). The present work aims to confirm the putative resistance of these populations to TM and explore their resistance mechanisms. Dose-response assays showed that the R1, R2 and R3 populations ranging between 57.4, 44.4 and 57.1 times more resistance to TM than the susceptible population (S). A mutation in the ALS gene (Asp376Glu) was detected in the Rs S. alba populations. 14C-metabolism studies show that metabolites and TM were changing significantly faster in the R than in the S plants. Alternative chemical control trials showed that 2,4-D and MCPA (auxin mimics), glyphosate (enolpyruvyl shikimate phosphate synthase, EPSPS, inhibitorgroup 9), metribuzin (PSII inhibitors/Serine 264 Binders, -group 5) and mesotrione (hydroxyphenyl pyruvate dioxygenase, HPPD, inhibitor-group 27) presented a high control of the four populations of S. alba tested, both S and R. Based on these results, it is the first case described where the Asp376Glu mutation and P450-mediated metabolism participates in resistance to TM in S. alba. Comparing these results with those found in the S. alba population in Malaga in 2008, where the resistance was TSR type (Pro197Ser), we can suggest that despite the geographical proximity (over 100 km), the resistance in these cases was due to different evolutionary events. Context: Yield losses in lentil (Lens culinaris ssp. culinaris Medik.) caused by weeds are estimated at 20–80%. In the absence of effective broad-spectrum herbicides, the menace of weed has emerged as a serious yield constraint in lentil. Aims: Identification of tolerance to two broad-spectrum post-emergence herbicides, imazethapyr and metribuzin. Methods: 221 lentil accessions were screened at the experimental research station of the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas, Terbol (Lebanon) over four crop seasons (2014/15–2018/19). During the 2014/15 season, a preliminary screening experiment was conducted with 221 lentil accessions in an alpha lattice design with two replications, where accessions were treated at the pre-flowering stage at 150% of the recommended dose of imazethapyr (112.5 g active ingredient/ha) or metribuzin (315 g active ingredient/ha). Based on the preliminary results, 38 accessions were selected for further evaluation. In subsequent testing, the selected accessions were screened at 100% and 150% of the recommended doses of imazethapyr or metribuzin. Key results: Herbicide treatments delayed the flowering time and maturation of tested lentil accessions. The plant height of selected tolerant accessions was reduced by 15% and 8% in the plots treated by imazethapyr and metribuzin, respectively. Reduction index (RIsy) was an effective tool to select for herbicide tolerance. Stability analysis indicated that two accessions (IG4400 and IG5722) performed under high rainfall environments while two other accessions (IG323 and IG4605) were adapted to low rainfall environments. Conclusions: Four accessions (IG323, IG5722, IG4400, IG4605) were identified as independently tolerant to metribuzin and imazethapyr. Implications: The identified herbicide-tolerant accessions can be used to develop herbicide-tolerant cultivars. The integration of herbicide-tolerant lentil in the cropping system increases its sustainability and soil fertility in West Asian and North African regions. Therefore the identified sources for herbicide tolerance combined with other traits can be used to develop new cultivars that can be adapted to modern cropping systems in the region. Solar heating techniques were tested to enhance the dissipation of eight herbicides belonging to four different chemical families (phenylurea, triazine, dinitroaniline and diphenylether derivatives). Guano, vermicompost, green manure, and goat manure were used as biofumigants for biosolarization. In all experiments, the soil was covered with high-density polyethylene (HDPE) film along 60 d after treatment and the results were compared with control plots. A significant increase in the soil temperature from 2 to 6 °C was detected in solarized soils as compared to control plots being probably the direct hydrothermal effect the most important factor on herbicide degradation. The behaviour of herbicides in mulched soils presents a faster phase of disappearance (15 d) followed by a slower phase (15–60 d). The mean half-lives ranged from 98 d in control plots to 17 d in the solarized soil amended with goat excrements manure being isoproturon and trifluralin the more and the less persistent herbicides, respectively. In all cases, significant differences (p < 0.05) in the persistence were observed between control soil and solarized soils for all herbicides. Therefore, the use of solar heating techniques, especially biosolarization can be considered as an environmentally friendly tool to enhance herbicide disappearance from the soil. Pyrolysis temperature and application rate of biochar to soil can influence herbicide behavior and soil fertility. The objective was to investigate the effect of soil amendments with application rates of sugarcane straw biochar, produced at different pyrolysis temperatures, on the sorption–desorption of metribuzin in soil. The analysis was performed using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The treatments were three pyrolysis temperatures (BC350, BC550 and BC750 °C) and seven application rates (0, 0.1, 0.5, 1, 1.5, 5 and 10% w w−1). Amended soil with different application rates decreased H + Al and increased pH, OC, P, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, CEC and BS contents. Kf values of sorption and desorption of metribuzin were 1.42 and 0.78 mg(1−1/n) L1/n Kg−1, respectively, in the unamended soil. Application rates < 1% of biochar sorbed ~23% and desorbed ~15% of metribuzin, similar to unamended soil, for all pyrolysis temperatures. Amended soil with 10% of BC350, BC550 and BC750 sorbed 63.8, 75.5 and 89.4% and desorbed 8.3, 5.8 and 3.7% of metribuzin, respectively. High pyrolysis temperature and application rates of sugarcane straw biochar show an ability to immobilize metribuzin and improve soil fertility, which may influence the effectiveness in weed control. A field experiment was conducted during summer season of 2021 with a view to find out a suitable weed management practice for sesamum by excluding commonly used herbicides and including botanical herbicides along with hand weeding. The experiment was conducted in randomized block design with 10 treatments and was replicated thrice. The treatments included one pre-emergence herbicide metribuzin at two levels, one early post-emergence herbicide imazethapyr and one post-emergence herbicide quizalofop ethyl and were applied individually and in sequence along with HW. Two plant products Ageratum conizoides and Ocimum sanctum were tried each at two levels along with HW. These treatments were compared with twice HW and unweeded control. Among the treatments, the least weed density (9.92, 9.88), weed DMP (4.96, 13.54 g/m2), highest grain yield (684 kg/ha) and stalk yield (2069 kg/ha) were recorded in pre-emergence application of metribuzin @ 100 g a.i./ha on 3 DAS+Early post-emergence application of imazethapyr @ 30 g a.i./ha on 10 DAS+HW on 20 DAS. Further, this treatment gave the highest BCR of 2.46. Treatments involving herbicides fb HW were better than plant products fb HW treatments in terms of weed density and yield. Metribuzin is a triazine herbicide used in sugarcane fields to control broadleaf weeds. Metribuzin that is washed into waterways as runoff can be linked to hermaphroditism in frogs as well as algal and macrophyte death. Metribuzin degradation by bacteria is essential to reduce the half‐life of metribuzin in the environment. The objective of this study was to determine metribuzin degradation by various bacterial consortia developed from a sludge collected from a sewage treatment plant. The sludge was exposed to metribuzin under various electron acceptor conditions including, nitrate reducing, sulfate reducing, and mixed electron acceptor conditions. Results showed metribuzin was removed significantly under mixed electron acceptor condition when glucose served as a co‐substrate followed by sulfate reducing and nitrate reducing conditions. The major metabolites identified in metribuzin degradation were desamino‐metribuzin, diketo‐metribuzin, and desamino‐diketo‐metribuzin. Repeated exposure to metribuzin may help the bacteria to adapt and evolve metribuzin degrading enzymes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background and Objectives: In recent years, the production of healthy foods through environmentally friendly methods has received much attention. Spinach is a vegetable plant rich in minerals and vitamins which is used in green and cooked forms. Thus, healthy production of this plant with the greatest quantitative and qualitative yield is of particular importance. Weeds as unwanted plants in spinach fields can damage this plant significantly. Nevertheless, spinach is severely sensitive to different herbicides. The goal of this study was to investigate the effect of plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR), filter cake and metribuzin herbicide on growth and mineral nutrition of spinach plant. In this study, the growth and nutritional parameters of spinach interact with PGPR, filter cake and metribuzin herbicide was also aimed.Materials and Methods: The spinach seeds (Spinacia oleracea L. Varamin cultivar) were sown in pots containing 40% field soil and 60% sand (10 seeds in each pots). To investigate the impact of PGPR isolates and filter cake on concentration of macronutrients (K, Ca, Mg, and P), micronutrients (Cu, Zn, and Fe) and leaves dry weight, Pseudomonas protogenes CHA0 (CHA0) as a reference strain, P. alloputida RUM14 (RUM14) which was collected from Iranian field soil and 3% by weight of fresh filter cake (F3%) were used. Spinach seedlings were inoculated for 14 days with 50 mL of bacteria strains suspension with optical density one (OD600=1). 3% by weight of filter cake were mixed to soil of pots before sowing the seeds. Metribuzin herbicide at three levels (0 (H0), 50 (H1) and 100 (H2) grams per hectare) were used. The effects of PGPR, filter cake and metribuzin herbicides and their interactions were also studied (CHA0 + F0 + H1, RUM14 + F0+ H1, CHA0­­ +­ F0­ +­ H2, RUM14 + F0 + H2, B0 + F3% + H0, B0 + F3% + H1, B0 + F3% + H2, CHA0 + F3% + H1, RUM14 + F3% + H1, CHA0 + F3% + H2, RUM14 + F3% + H2). The experiment had a randomized complete block design with three replications. The treatments (3 metribuzin herbicide × 2 filter cake × 3 PGPR) were arranged in factorial combination. The statistical analysis was performed using Duncan’s multiple range test at 5% probability level.Results: Statistical analysis revealed that the application of PGPR (CHA0 and RUB14), filter cake, and their interaction increased tissue plant concentration of macronutrients, micronutrient and leaf dry weight of spinach plant. Statistically, the highest concentration of P, K, Ca, and Mg macronutrients (5583.30, 83000.00, 10886.70, 10766.60 mg kg-1 dry matter, respectively), Cu, Zn, and Fe micronutrients (22.73, 73.00, and 221.36 mg kg-1 dry matter, respectively) and dry weight of leaves (8.76 g) was observed in treatment of combination of PGPR and filter cake. The application of Metribuzin herbicide led to decline the concentration of macronutrients, micronutrient, and leaf dry weight of spinach plant. The decline increased with increasing herbicide concentration. The lowest concentration of P, K, Ca, and Mg macronutrients (3233.30, 48867.00, 6403.30, and 6283.30 mg kg-1 leaf dry weight, respectively), Cu, Zn, and Fe micronutrient (4.40, 19.50, and 132.66 mg kg-1, respectively), and leaf dry weight (2.83 g) was observed in B0+F0+H2 treatment (using just herbicide 100 g ha-1). However, the detrimental effect of herbicide on leaf dry weight and mineral nutrition of spinach plant were alleviated using the PGPR (CHA0 and RUB14) and filter cake (F3%) either alone or together (RUM14+F3%, CHA0+F3%). Statistically, the greatest alleviation of the detrimental effect of herbicide was observed in the treatment of RUM14+F3%.Conclusion: The results of this research showed that inoculation of spinach with Pseudomonas PGPR (P. protogenes CHA0, P. alloputida RUM14) with and without filter cake not only improved the growth and mineral nutrition of spinach plant, but also alleviated the detrimental effect of herbicide in the plant. In general, the proper function of PGPR and filter cake in spinach plant growth is due to 1- Supplying more nutrients to the spinach plant due to filter cake rich in nutrients 2- The ability of Pseudomonas bacteria to induce resistance of the plants to stress and supply of some nutrients such as iron due to its ability to produce siderophore 3- Supply of food by filter cake for further growth of PGPR and the possibility of increasing the population of these bacteria. 4- Filter cake rich in organic matter can improve the physical and biological properties of the soil and can provide the better conditions for plant growth and nutrition. The results of this research showed that P. alloputida RUM14 and filter cake can be used as biological and organic fertilizers.

Pesticides are widely used in agriculture, and they can cause serious damage to human health and to the environment. In this work, three herbicides are studied regarding possible tautomeric equilibria: clethodim, diclosulam and metribuzin. Tautomerism is a key reaction that is directly related to action, disposition and toxicity of herbicides, and here lies the importance of this study. The specific aim of this work is to compare classical parameters (MAE and R2) with DP4+ method as a tool for obtaining relevant information about tautomeric equilibria in the three compounds, contrasting experimental NMR data with theoretical calculations carried out using DFT methods. 1H and 13C NMR spectra of the three herbicides were recorded in DMSO‑ d 6. Additionally, HSQC and COSY spectra were obtained for clethodim. Theoretical calculations were carried out in order to obtain optimized geometries in vacuum (using B3LYP method at 6–31G(d,p) level of theory); and chemical shifts of nuclei corresponding to all possible tautomers of each herbicide were obtained by means of B3LYP-GIAO method using 6–311+ G (2d,p) basis set. In the three cases, classical comparison parameters MAE and R2 fail in the assignation of tautomers since they gave doubtful or even inconsistent results. In the case of metribuzin, MAE values obtained from 1H and 13C point towards different structures. R2 and MAE values obtained from 1H and 13C are very close when comparing the two tautomers, and the assignation is not certain. The case of clethodim is more confusing, since the R2 and MAE values suggest that all signals correspond to the same structure. DP4+ method, on the other hand, gave more reliable results (within the set of proposed structures). It is important to remark that DP4+ method has been used before for tautomer assignation in only one case (to the best of our knowledge), and it has also proven successful in this context of use. We concluded that metribuzin and diclosulam exist in solution in one major tautomeric form (aminotriazinone and sulfonamide, respectively), while two tautomers of similar energy (E - and Z -ketoenolimine complexed with DMSO) are proposed for clethodim. The presence of microplastics in the ecological environment, serving as carriers for other organic pollutants, has garnered widespread attention. These microplastics exposed in the environment may undergo various aging processes. However, there is still a lack of information regarding how these aged microplastics impact the environmental behavior and ecological toxicity of pollutants. In this study, we modified polystyrene microplastics by simulating the aging behavior that may occur under environmental exposure, and then explored the adsorption behavior and adsorption mechanism of microplastics before and after aging for typical triazine herbicides. It was shown that all aging treatments of polystyrene increased the adsorption of herbicides, the composite aged microplastics had the strongest adsorption capacity and the fastest adsorption rate, and of the three herbicides, metribuzin was adsorbed the most by microplastics. The interactions between microplastics and herbicides involved mechanisms such as hydrophobic interactions, surface adsorption, the effect of π-π interactions, and the formation of hydrogen bonds. Further studies confirmed that microplastics adsorbed with herbicides cause greater biotoxicity to E. coli. These findings elucidate the interactions between microplastics before and after aging and triazine herbicides. Acting as carriers, they alter the environmental behavior and ecological toxicity of organic pollutants, providing theoretical support for assessing the ecological risk of microplastics in water environments.
