Aim and Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the antifungal efficacy of MTA Fillapex, Metapex, zinc oxide eugenol cement, Endomethasone, and Endoflas against Candida albicans ., Materials and Methods: Root canal exudates of 30 patients were tested against MTA Fillapex (Angelus), Metapex (BioMed), zinc oxide eugenol (Deepak Enterprise), Endomethasone (Septodont), Endoflas FS (Sanlor Laboratories), MTA (Angelus) (positive control), and glycerine (negative control). Children with failed endodontic cases were included in the study. Tube dilution and agar diffusion methods were used to check the antifungal efficacy of the root canal sealers. In tube dilution method, 24-well culture plates containing freshly mixed material along with Candida albicans were used. Wells containing MTA (Angelus) along with Sabouraud dextrose agar and Candida albicans served as positive control while glycerine along with Sabouraud dextrose agar and Candida albicans served as negative control. All plates were incubated at 37°C for 24 hours. Growth of the fungi was monitored after 24 hours by the presence of the turbidity. The samples were recultured to test the experimental material using agar well diffusion method, and the Petri plates were incubated for 24 hours and 72 hours. Zone of inhibition was measured after respective time period. Paired t test was used for the data analysis., Results: It was seen in tube dilution method Endomethasone showed least turbidity while maximum was shown by Metapex; similar results were seen in case of agar well diffusion method in which largest zone of inhibition was shown by Endomethasone while smallest was by Metapex., Conclusion: It was concluded that Endomethasone showed maximum efficacy against Candida albicans as compared to Metapex., How to Cite This Article: Singh S, Srivastava B, Gupta K, et al. Aim: Physical properties of obturating materials have a direct effect on the quality of obturation; less viscous material will tend to extrude beyond the apex. We hypothesize that the use of absorbable gelatin sponge (AGS) can prevent the extrusion of these materials. This study aimed to evaluate the quality of obturation in root canals filled with iodoform‐calcium hydroxide (Metapex) premixed paste and Metapex with AGS (MAGS) in primary molars. Methods: This in vivo study comprised 60 primary mandibular molars which after instrumentation were divided into 2 groups according to the obturation material used, Metapex and MAGS, followed by radiographic evaluation to assess the quality of the obturation. The χ2‐test was applied for statistical analysis. Results: There was a statistically significant difference between Metapex and MAGS groups in achieving optimum obturation (P < .001). Metapex and MAGS exhibited 86.65% and 38.88% optimum obturation respectively. The overfilling of root canals effectively reduced from 38.88% to 4.44%. Conclusion: The addition of AGS to Metapex causes a "tamponade effect", which reduces the tendency of Metapex to extrude beyond the root apex. Root canal obturation using a modified filling paste like MAGS is effective in obtaining optimum obturation in primary teeth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aims and Objectives: The aim of the present study was to determine the effect of different intracanal medicaments on the apical seal of BioRoot root canal sealer (RCS)., Materials and Methods: One hundred permanent single-rooted teeth were used in this study. All the samples were decoronated at the cementoenamel junction and instrumented in a sequential order from 15 to 50 number k-file. The specimens were randomly divided into five groups containing 20 teeth each. Intracanal medicaments used in this study were Metapex, triple antibiotic paste, Metrogyl DG gel forte (metronidazole gel 1.5% w/w), and curenext gel. For control group following instrumentation, the roots were obturated with laterally compacted gutta-percha with BioRoot RCS. In medicament groups after the period of 14 days, the medicaments were removed. All the four groups were obturated with BioRoot RCS and gutta-percha cones using lateral compaction technique. All the specimens were coated with nail varnish and immersed in 2% methylene blue. Then the specimens were demineralized and diphanized. The cleared teeth were analyzed by means of a stereomicroscope under 10× magnification. All the data were analyzed in SPSS version 18 software (IBM, Chicago, IL, USA)., Result: Among all the intracanal medicaments, triple antibiotic paste showed the highest microleakage. When Metpaex and Metrogyl DG gel forte were compared with Curcuma longa , differences were not statistically significant., Conclusion: Among all the intracanal medicaments, triple antibiotic paste showed the highest microleakage and least was Metapex., Clinical Significance: Incomplete removal of medicaments prevents the penetration of sealer into the dentinal tubules and interferes with the normal setting reaction, thus affecting the seal of obturating material leading to microleakage and subsequent treatment failure. Hence, while placing an intracanal medicament, it is important to consider its effect on leakage of the root canal system.

Background: Drying the root canals in pulp therapy is often ignored, but is essential for a successful clinical outcome. The conventional method used for drying root canals is by the use of paper points, but recently, various other methods have also been employed for this purpose., Aim: The purpose of this study was to volumetrically analyze root canal fillings in deciduous teeth, after using different canal-drying methods namely 95% ethanol, CANAL CLEAN (Cerkamed Medical Company), and Endo-Aspirator (Cerkamed Medical Company), and compare with the conventional paper point drying method., Methodology: Access cavities were prepared on eighty extracted primary canines, and irrigation was done with 1% sodium hypochlorite and normal saline while enlarging the canals. The specimens were then scanned using a cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), and preobturation volume (X) of each tooth was measured. The teeth were then randomly divided into two groups - Group 1 - Zinc oxide eugenol (ZOE) group and Group 2 - Metapex group. Each group was further divided randomly into four subgroups based on the drying agent used - Subgroup A - Control group, Subgroup B - 95% ethanol group, Subgroup C - CANAL CLEAN group, and Subgroup D - Endo-Aspirator group. After obturation, a second CBCT was taken to measure the postobturation volume (Y). The percentage of obturated volume was calculated by the following formula: (postobturation volume/preobturation volume) ×100 ([ Y / X ] ×100)., Statistical Analysis: The obtained data were tabulated and subjected to statistical analysis using one-way ANOVA test and unpaired t -test., Results: A significantly high postobturation volume was seen after using 95% ethanol followed by CANAL CLEAN, Endo-Aspirator, and paper points. Objective: Studies about the dispersion of hydroxyl ions through dentin of endodontically retreated teeth are scarce. The present study aims at examining the diffusion of calcium hydroxide in vitro by recording the pH changes of retreated root canal using two types of calcium hydroxide preparations., Materials and Methods: A total of 45 recently extracted single-rooted mandibular first premolars were collected and cleaned from calculus and remains of periodontal tissue. The teeth so collected were stored in thymol 10% solution till use. During collection, teeth with cracks, open apices, and restorations were excluded. Root canal preparations were performed using Protaper rotary system files, till #F3 file. All canals were obturated using cold lateral condensation and zinc oxide-based sealer. After 7 days, all gutta-percha were removed and the canals were irrigated with normal saline. The teeth were then randomly distributed into three groups. Canals in Group I were kept empty without any dressing to serve as a negative control group, Canals in Group II were filled with a freshly prepared mixture of calcium hydroxide powder with normal saline solution, and Group III was filled with Metapex. Periodically, the calcium hydroxide material was removed and the pH was measured using pH meter at 7, 10, 14, and 30 days., Results: The pH values of Group II and III ranged between 9.2 and 11.2. This was found to be highly significant against the negative control group. After 7 and 10 days, freshly mixed Ca(OH) 2 showed the higher pH than the creamy Metapex, and statistically the difference was highly significant after 10 days ( P <0.001). After 14 days, Metapex group pH was higher than freshly mixed Ca(OH) 2 , but it was not statistically significant as they reached nearly the same pH after 30 days ( P >0.05)., Conclusion: All Ca(OH) 2 preparations had high pH around the roots after 7 and 10 days. Objectives: The aim of this study was to compare the canal debridement capabilities of three single file systems, ProTaper, and K-files in oval-shaped canals., Materials and Methods: Seventy-five extracted human mandibular central incisors with oval-shaped root canals were selected. A radiopaque contrast medium (Metapex; Meta Biomed Co. Ltd., Chungcheongbuk-do, Korea) was introduced into the canal systems and the self-adjusting file (SAF), WaveOne, Reciproc, ProTaper, and K-files were used for the instrumentation of the canals. The percentage of removed contrast medium was calculated using pre- and post-operative radiographs., Results: An overall comparison between the groups revealed that the hand file (HF) and SAF groups presented the lowest percentage of removed contrast medium, whereas the WaveOne group showed the highest percentage (P < 0.001). The ProTaper group removed more contrast medium than the SAF and HF groups (P < 0.05)., Conclusions: None of the instruments was able to remove the contrast medium completely. WaveOne performed significantly better than other groups.
