Normal corn starch granules are imaged using a helium ion microscope (HIM). This relatively new imaging technique produces high‐resolution images of both the interior and exterior of the granules that allow features to be observed which had previously not been seen with scanning electron microscope. Of particular interest is the mesh‐like structure which is observed in the interior when starch granules are sectioned with a metal blade, a structure not currently part of existing models of starch architecture. Carbon nanomembranes (CNMs) prepared from aromatic self-assembled monolayers constitute a recently developed class of 2D materials. They are made by a combination of self-assembly, radiation-induced cross-linking and the detachment of the cross-linked SAM from its substrate. CNMs can be deposited on arbitrary substrates, including holey and perforated ones, as well as on metallic (transmission electron microscopy) grids. Therewith, freestanding membranes with a thickness of 1 nm and macroscopic lateral dimensions can be prepared. Although free-standing CNMs cannot be imaged by light microscopy, charged particle techniques can visualize them. However, CNMs are electrically insulating, which makes them sensitive to charging. We demonstrate that the helium ion microscope (HIM) is a good candidate for imaging freestanding CNMs due to its efficient charge compensation tool. Scanning with a beam of helium ions while recording the emitted secondary electrons generates the HIM images. The advantages of HIM are high resolution, high surface sensitivity and large depth of field. The effects of sample charging, imaging of multilayer CNMs as well as imaging artefacts are discussed.

While it is well established that the composition and organisation of articular cartilage dramatically change during skeletal maturation, relatively little is known about how this impacts the mechanical properties of the tissue. In this study, digital image correlation was first used to quantify spatial deformation within mechanically compressed skeletally immature (4 and 8 week old) and mature (1 and 3 year old) porcine articular cartilage. The compressive modulus of the immature tissue was relatively homogeneous, while the stiffness of mature articular cartilage dramatically increased with depth from the articular surface. Other, well documented, biomechanical characteristics of the tissue also emerged with skeletal maturity, such as strain-softening and a depth-dependent Poisson’s ratio. The most significant changes that occurred with age were in the deep zone of the tissue, where an order of magnitude increase in compressive modulus (from 0.97 MPa to 9.4 MPa for low applied strains) was observed from 4 weeks postnatal to skeletal maturity. These temporal increases in compressive stiffness occurred despite a decrease in tissue sulphated glycosaminoglycan content, but were accompanied by increases in tissue collagen content. Furthermore, helium ion microscopy revealed dramatic changes in collagen fibril alignment through the depth of the tissue with skeletal maturity, as well as a fivefold increase in fibril diameter with age. Finally, computational modelling was used to demonstrate how both collagen network reorganisation and collagen stiffening play a key role in determining the final compressive mechanical properties of the tissue. Together these findings provide a unique insight into evolving structure-function relations in articular cartilage.

Abstract Indium phosphide (InP) surfaces develop a pronounced nanostructured texture upon irradiation by energetic ion beams. We have observed the mechanism of nanostructure evolution of InP under irradiation by an Ar gas cluster ion beam (GCIB) using helium ion microscopy (HIM). Initially, metallic indium nanoparticles form on the surface after removal of the top-most oxide layer. These nanoparticles form a mask which shadows the underlying InP. As the ion dose is increased, the masking effect results in substantial nanostructured topography in the form of pillars or nanocones, oriented along the axis of the incident GCIB. Scanning electron microscopy has been used to observe and study parasitic protozoa for at least 40 years. However, field emission electron sources, as well as improvements in lenses and detectors, brought the resolution power of scanning electron microscopes (SEM) to a new level. Parallel to the refinement of instruments, protocols for preservation of the ultrastructure, immunolabeling, exposure of cytoskeleton and inner structures of parasites and host cells were developed. This review is focused on protozoan parasites of medical and veterinary relevance, e.g., Toxoplasma gondii , Tritrichomonas foetus , Giardia intestinalis , and Trypanosoma cruzi , compilating the main achievements in describing the fine ultrastructure of their surface, cytoskeleton and interaction with host cells. Two new resources, namely, Helium Ion Microscopy (HIM) and Slice and View, using either Focused Ion Beam (FIB) abrasion or Microtome Serial Sectioning (MSS) within the microscope chamber, combined to backscattered electron imaging of fixed (chemically or by quick freezing followed by freeze substitution and resin embedded samples is bringing an exponential amount of valuable information. In HIM there is no need of conductive coating and the depth of field is much higher than in any field emission SEM. As for FIB- and MSS-SEM, high resolution 3-D models of areas and volumes larger than any other technique allows can be obtained. The main results achieved with all these technological tools and some protocols for sample preparation are included in this review. In addition, we included some results obtained with environmental/low vacuum scanning microscopy and cryo-scanning electron microscopy, both promising, but not yet largely employed SEM modalities. Secondary electron emission from thin silicon nitride films of different thicknesses on silicon excited by helium ions with energies from 15 to 35 keV was investigated in the helium ion microscope. Secondary electron yield measured with Everhart-Thornley detector decreased with the irradiation time because of the charging of insulating films tending to zero or reaching a non-zero value for relatively thick or thin films, respectively. The finiteness of secondary electron yield value, which was found to be proportional to electronic energy losses of the helium ion in silicon substrate, can be explained by the electron emission excited from the substrate by the helium ions. The method of measurement of secondary electron energy distribution from insulators was suggested, and secondary electron energy distribution from silicon nitride was obtained. Gliadin, an immunogenic protein present in wheat, is not fully degraded by humans and after the normal gastric and pancreatic digestion, the immunodominant 33-mer gliadin peptide remains unprocessed. The 33-mer gliadin peptide is found in human faeces and urine, proving not only its proteolytic resistance in vivo but more importantly its transport through the entire human body. Here, we demonstrate that 33-mer supramolecular structures larger than 220 nm induce the overexpression of nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) via a specific Toll-like Receptor (TLR) 2 and (TLR) 4 dependent pathway and the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IP-10/CXCL10 and TNF-α. Using helium ion microscopy, we elucidated the initial stages of oligomerisation of 33-mer gliadin peptide, showing that rod-like oligomers are nucleation sites for protofilament formation. The relevance of the 33-mer supramolecular structures in the early stages of the disease is paving new perspectives in the understanding of gluten-related disorders. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Increasing the density of sinks such as grain boundaries and interfaces for irradiation-induced defects and implanted ions has been demonstrated to be an effective way to improve the irradiation resistance of materials. To understand the effects of grain boundaries on the degradation mechanism of nanostructured materials, nanocrystalline tungsten was fabricated by high pressure torsion (HPT-W). Morphological changes of HPT-W and coarse grain tungsten (CG-W) during helium ion irradiation were evaluated in situ in a helium ion microscopy. It has been shown that the degradation mechanisms of CG-W and HPT-W are remarkably different. Blister occurs on the surface of CG-W when the irradiation dose increases up to 5.0 × 10 21  m −2 , and orientation dependence of blistering has been observed. However, no blister is formed on the surface of HPT-W even when the irradiation dose increases up to 1.0 × 10 23  m −2 . Instead, crack formation along grain boundaries is the major degradation mechanism during helium irradiation of HPT-W, supporting a different irradiation degradation mechanism. This explains the unprecedented irradiation tolerance of HPT-W in terms of blistering. Molecular dynamics results also show that grain boundaries and helium clusters play an important role during the propagation of a crack. The zigzag crack planes are attributed to the coalescence and growth of helium blister/bubble-induced crack. The results document that grain boundaries play decisive roles in the irradiation resistance of nanostructured materials, and provide a new perspective to the design of plasma facing materials with excellent irradiation resistance. The physicochemical properties of the oat beta-glucan powder (BG) and coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10)-loaded BG powder (L-BG) produced by the pressurized gas-expanded liquid (PGX) technology were studied. Helium ion microscope, differential scanning calorimeter, X-ray diffractometer, AutoSorb iQ and rheometer were used to determine the particle morphology, thermal properties, crystallinity, surface area and viscosity, respectively. Both BG (7.7 μm) and L-BG (6.1 μm) were produced as micrometer-scale particles, while CoQ10 nanoparticles (92 nm) were adsorbed on the porous structure of L-BG. CoQ10 was successfully loaded onto BG using the PGX process via adsorptive precipitation mainly in its amorphous form. Viscosity of BG and L-BG solutions (0.15%, 0.2%, 0.3% w/v) displayed Newtonian behavior with increasing shear rate but decreased with temperature. Detailed characterization of the physicochemical properties of combination ingredients like L-BG will lead to the development of novel functional food and natural health product applications. Carbon nanomembranes (CNMs) are a class of two-dimensional materials, which are obtained by electron beam-induced crosslinking of aromatic self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on solid substrates. CNMs made from a single type of precursor molecule are uniform with homogeneous chemical and physical properties. We have developed a method for the fabrication of internally patterned CNMs resembling a key feature of biological membranes. Direct laser patterning is used to obtain multicomponent patterned SAMs on gold, which are subsequently crosslinked by electron irradiation. We demonstrate that the structure of internally patterned CNMs is preserved upon transfer to different substrates. The method enables rapid fabrication of patterned 2D materials with local variations in chemical and physical properties on the micrometer to centimeter scale. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Helium ion microscopy (HIM) is a relatively new high-resolution nanotechnology imaging and nanofabrication tool. HIM offers a near-molecular resolution (approaching that of TEM) combined with a simplicity of sample preparation and high depth of field similar to SEM. Simultaneously, the technique is not limited by the surface roughness as scanning probe microscopy (SPM) techniques or by the surface charging or radiation damage like SEM. In our review, we consider general principles, advantages, and prospects of HIM application in polymer science. Examples of high-resolution imaging of polymer-based nanocomposites, polymer nanoparticles, nanofibers, nanoporous materials, polymer nanocrystals, biopolymers, and polymer-based photovoltaic and sensor devices are presented. We compare the HIM’s applicability with other modern imaging techniques: SPM and SEM.

Solid-state nanopores are emerging as a valuable tool for the detection and characterization of individual biomolecules. Central to their success is the realization of fabrication strategies that are both rapid and flexible in their ability to achieve diverse device dimensions. In this paper, we demonstrate the membrane thickness dependence of solid-state nanopore formation with a focused helium ion beam. We vary membrane thickness in situ and show that the rate of pore expansion follows a reproducible trend under all investigated membrane conditions. We show that this trend shifts to lower ion dose for thin membranes in a manner that can be described quantitatively, allowing devices of arbitrary dimension to be realized. Finally, we demonstrate that thin, small-diameter nanopores formed with our approach can be utilized for high signal-to-noise ratio resistive pulse sensing of DNA.

The irradiation-induced cross-linking of aromatic self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) is a universal method for the fabrication of ultrathin carbon nanomembranes (CNMs). Here we demonstrate the cross-linking of aromatic SAMs due to exposure to helium ions. The distinction of cross-linked from non-cross-linked regions in the SAM was facilitated by transferring the irradiated SAM to a new substrate, which allowed for an ex situ observation of the cross-linking process by helium ion microscopy (HIM). In this way, three growth regimes of cross-linked areas were identified: formation of nuclei, one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) growth. The evaluation of the corresponding HIM images revealed the dose-dependent coverage, i.e., the relative monolayer area, whose density of cross-links surpassed a certain threshold value, as a function of the exposure dose. A complete cross-linking of aromatic SAMs by He+ ion irradiation requires an exposure dose of about 850 µC/cm2, which is roughly 60 times smaller than the corresponding electron irradiation dose. Most likely, this is due to the energy distribution of secondary electrons shifted to lower energies, which results in a more efficient dissociative electron attachment (DEA) process.

Atomically thin circuits have recently been explored for applications in nextgeneration electronics and optoelectronics and have been demonstrated with 2D lateral heterojunctions. In order to form true 2D circuitry from a single material, electronic properties must be spatially tunable. Here, tunable transport behavior is reported which is introduced into single layer tungsten diselenide and tungsten disulfide by focused He+ irradiation. Pseudometallic behavior is induced by irradiating the materials with a dose of ≈1 x 1016 He+ cm-2 to introduce defect states, and subsequent temperaturedependent transport measurements suggest a nearest neighbor hopping mechanism is operative. Scanning transmission electron microscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy reveal that Se is sputtered preferentially, and extended percolating networks of edge states form within WSe2 at a critical dose of 1 x 1016 He+ cm-2. First-principle calculations confirm the semiconductor- to-metallic transition of WSe2 after pore and edge defects are introduced by He+ irradiation. The hopping conduction is utilized to direct-write resistor loaded logic circuits in WSe2 and WS2 with a voltage gain of greater than 5. Edge contacted thin film transistors are also fabricated with a high on/off ratio (>106), demonstrating potential for the formation of atomically thin circuits. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

High-aspect ratio porous structures with controllable pore diameters and without a stiff substrate can be fabricated using the ion track technique. Atomic layer deposition is an ideal technique for depositing thin films and functional surfaces on complicated 3D structures due to the high conformality of the films. In this work, we studied Al 2 O 3 and TiO 2 films grown by ALD on pristine polyimide (Kapton HN) membranes as well as polyimide membranes etched in sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) and boric acid (BO 3 ) solution by means of RBS, PIXE, SEM-EDX and helium ion microcopy (HIM). The focus was on the first ALD growth cycles. The areal density of Al 2 O 3 film in the 400 cycle sample was determined to be 51 ± 3 × 10 16 at./cm 2 , corresponding to the thickness of 55 ± 3 nm. Furthermore, the growth per cycle was 1.4 Å/cycle. The growth is highly linear from the first cycles. In the case of TiO 2 , the growth per cycle is clearly slower during the first 200 cycles but then it increases significantly. The growth rate based on RBS measurements is 0.24 Å/cycle from 3 to 200 cycles and then 0.6 Å/cycle between 200 and 400 cycles. The final areal density of TiO 2 film after 400 cycles is 148 ± 3 × 10 15 at./cm 2 which corresponds to the thickness of 17.4 ± 0.4 nm. The modification of the polyimide surface by etching prior to the deposition did not have an effect on the Al 2 O 3 and TiO 2 growth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Helium ion microscopy (HIM) was used to investigate the interaction of a focused He+ ion beam with energies of several tens of kiloelectronvolts with metals. HIM is usually applied for the visualization of materials with extreme surface sensitivity and resolution. However, the use of high ion fluences can lead to significant sample modifications. We have characterized the changes caused by a focused He+ ion beam at normal incidence to the Au{111} surface as a function of ion fluence and energy. Under the influence of the beam a periodic surface nanopattern develops. The periodicity of the pattern shows a power-law dependence on the ion fluence. Simultaneously, helium implantation occurs. Depending on the fluence and primary energy, porous nanostructures or large blisters form on the sample surface. The growth of the helium bubbles responsible for this effect is discussed.

We investigate the ability of a focused helium ion beam to selectively modify and mill materials. The sub nanometer probe size of the helium ion microscope used provides lateral control not previously available for helium ion irradiation experiments. At high incidence angles the helium ions were found to remove surface material from a silicon lamella leaving the subsurface structure intact for further analysis. Surface roughness and contaminants were both reduced by the irradiation process. Fabrication is also realized with a high level of patterning acuity. Implantation of helium beneath the surface of the sample is visualized in cross section allowing direct observation of the extended effects of high dose irradiation. The effect of the irradiation on the crystal structure of the material is presented. Applications of the sample modification process are presented and further prospects discussed.

Background: The unique surface sensitivity and the high resolution that can be achieved with helium ion microscopy make it a competitive technique for modern materials characterization. As in other techniques that make use of a charged particle beam, channeling through the crystal structure of the bulk of the material can occur.Results: Here, we demonstrate how this bulk phenomenon affects secondary electron images that predominantly contain surface information. In addition, we will show how it can be used to obtain crystallographic information. We will discuss the origin of channeling contrast in secondary electron images, illustrate this with experiments, and develop a simple geometric model to predict channeling maxima.Conclusion: Channeling plays an important role in helium ion microscopy and has to be taken into account when trying to achieve maximum image quality in backscattered helium images as well as secondary electron images. Secondary electron images can be used to extract crystallographic information from bulk samples as well as from thin surface layers, in a straightforward manner.

Background: Helium ion microscopy is a new high-performance alternative to classical scanning electron microscopy. It provides superior resolution and high surface sensitivity by using secondary electrons.Results: We report on a new contrast mechanism that extends the high surface sensitivity that is usually achieved in secondary electron images, to backscattered helium images. We demonstrate how thin organic and inorganic layers as well as self-assembled monolayers can be visualized on heavier element substrates by changes in the backscatter yield. Thin layers of light elements on heavy substrates should have a negligible direct influence on backscatter yields. However, using simple geometric calculations of the opaque crystal fraction, the contrast that is observed in the images can be interpreted in terms of changes in the channeling probability.Conclusion: The suppression of ion channeling into crystalline matter by adsorbed thin films provides a new contrast mechanism for HIM. This dechanneling contrast is particularly well suited for the visualization of ultrathin layers of light elements on heavier substrates. Our results also highlight the importance of proper vacuum conditions for channeling-based experimental methods.

Heat management in hydrogen storage tanks is a mandatory issue in order to ensure high level performances both in terms of hydrogen release/uptake kinetics and storage capacity. Previous research has ascertained that powders tend to pack and sinter during charge/discharge cycling giving rise to non-reacting material. Moreover powders, with intrinsically low thermal conductivity, can show problems related to hydrogen permeability, and suffer from hydraulic losses and particle entrainment by gas flow. To overtake these problems and to keep high performances, hydride powders mixed with high thermal conductivity additives are compacted in pellets. Some materials, like Expanded Natural Graphite (ENG), besides improving the pellet mechanical stability during cycling, can impart a thermal conductivity higher by order of magnitudes with respect to a simple powdered bed. On the basis of these considerations, pelleting can be very effective in improving tank performances. However pellets tend to swell and lose compactness during long term operation, returning back to the powder form with a detrimental effect on tank performances. In this work the swelling process caused by cycling of pellets simulating tank exercise has been studied. The pellets, which are constituted by ball milled magnesium hydride (MgH 2 ) with the addition of niobium oxide (Nb 2 O 5 ) and ENG, have been deeply studied by different microscopic methods including Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Helium Ion Microscopy (HeIM) and high resolution Computed Tomography (CT) with the purpose of ascertaining microstructural modification and degradation mechanism in order to define strategies for material preparation able to reduce the entity of the swelling process. Helium Ion Microscopy is known for its surface sensitivity and high lateral resolution. Here, we present results of a Helium Ion Microscopy based investigation of a surface confined alloy of Ag on Pt(111). Based on a change of the work function of 25 meV across the atomically flat terraces we can distinguish Pt rich from Pt poor areas and visualize the single atomic layer high steps between the terraces. Furthermore, dechanneling contrast has been utilized to measure the periodicity of the hcp/fcc pattern formed in the 2–3 layers thick Ag/Pt alloy film. A periodicity of 6.65 nm along the 〈 11 ¯ 2 〉 surface direction has been measured. In terms of crystallography a hcp domain is obtained through a lateral displacement of a part of the outermost layer by 1 / 3 of a nearest neighbor spacing along 〈 11 ¯ 2 〉 . This periodicity is measured with atomic precision: coincidence between the Ag and the Pt lattices is observed for 23 Ag atoms on 24 Pt atoms. The findings are perfectly in line with results obtained with Low Energy Electron Microscopy and Phase Contrast Atomic Force Microscopy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Helium ion microscopy is used to provide new insight into the nano- and microscale morphology of cleaved surfaces of alkali-activated slag (AAS), revealing that AAS contains several types of gel with varying surface morphologies after being subjected to D-drying. It is seen that the bulk C-(N)-A-S-H gel is globular in nature in a silicate-activated slag paste while the gel covering the slag particles is foil-like. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An unresolved problem in tooth enamel studies has been to analyze simultaneously and with sufficient spatial resolution both mineral and organic phases in their three dimensional (3D) organization in a given specimen. This study aims to address this need using high-resolution imaging to analyze the 3D structural organization of the enamel matrix, especially amelogenin, in relation to forming enamel crystals. Chemically fixed hemi-mandibles from wild type mice were embedded in LR White acrylic resin, polished and briefly etched to expose the organic matrix in developing tooth enamel. Full-length amelogenin was labeled with specific antibodies and 10 nm immuno-gold. This allowed us to use and compare two different high-resolution imaging techniques for the analysis of uncoated samples. Helium ion microscopy (HIM) was applied to study the spatial organization of organic and mineral structures, while field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) in various modes, including backscattered electron detection, allowed us to discern the gold-labeled proteins. Wild type enamel in late secretory to early maturation stage reveals adjacent to ameloblasts a lengthwise parallel alignment of the enamel matrix proteins, including full-length amelogenin proteins, which then transitions into a more heterogeneous appearance with increasing distance from the mineralization front. The matrix adjacent to crystal bundles forms a smooth and lacey sheath, whereas between enamel prisms it is organized into spherical components that are interspersed with rod-shaped protein. These findings highlight first, that the heterogeneous organization of the enamel matrix can be visualized in mineralized en bloc samples. Second, our results illustrate that the combination of these techniques is a powerful approach to elucidate the 3D structural organization of organic matrix molecules in mineralizing tissue in nanometer resolution.

Giardia intestinalis presents a complex microtubular cytoskeleton formed by specialized structures, such as the adhesive disk, four pairs of flagella, the funis and the median body. The ultrastructural organization of the Giardia cytoskeleton has been analyzed using different microscopic techniques, including high-resolution scanning electron microscopy. Recent advances in scanning microscopy technology have opened a new venue for the characterization of cellular structures and include scanning probe microscopy techniques such as ultra-high-resolution scanning electron microscopy (UHRSEM) and helium ion microscopy (HIM). Here, we studied the organization of the cytoskeleton of G. intestinalis trophozoites using UHRSEM and HIM in membrane-extracted cells. The results revealed a number of new cytoskeletal elements associated with the lateral crest and the dorsal surface of the parasite. The fine structure of the banded collar was also observed. The marginal plates were seen linked to a network of filaments, which were continuous with filaments parallel to the main cell axis. Cytoplasmic filaments that supported the internal structures were seen by the first time. Using anti-actin antibody, we observed a labeling in these filamentous structures. Taken together, these data revealed new surface characteristics of the cytoskeleton of G. intestinalis and may contribute to an improved understanding of the structural organization of trophozoites. Various amounts of predispersed multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) were mixed with natural rubber (NR), with and without carbon black (CB), for preparing MWCNT-filled NR (NC) and MWCNT/CB-filled NR (NH) vulcanizates. All NH vulcanizates contained 30 phr CB and the amount of MWCNT for both NC and NH was varied from 0 to 8 phr. Helium ion microscopy (HIM) and FE-SEM images showed that MWCNT in the NH was dispersed much better than in the NC. Additionally, the well dispersed CB and MWCNT in the NH functioned synergistically in promoting an increase in longitudinal crack growth, leading to enhancement of edge-cut tensile strength (CTS) with increasing MWCNT loading. In contrast, all NC specimens ruptured in a simple lateral direction relating to their lower CTS. Results also revealed that abrasion resistance of the NH was not significantly changed with increasing MWCNT, whereas that of the NC increased. Nevertheless, abrasion resistance of both vulcanizates showed good correlation with the average value of ridge spacing on their abraded surfaces. Continuous conductive gold nanofibers are prepared via the 'tubes by fiber templates' process. First, poly(l-lactide) (PLLA)-stabilized gold nanoparticles (AuNP) with over 60 wt% gold are synthesized and characterized, including gel permeation chromatography coupled with a diode array detector. Subsequent electrospinning of these AuNP with template PLLA results in composite nanofibers featuring a high gold content of 57 wt%. Highly homogeneous gold nanowires are obtained after chemical vapor deposition of 345 nm of poly( p-xylylene) (PPX) onto the composite fibers followed by pyrolysis of the polymers at 1050 °C. The corresponding heat-induced transition from continuous gold-loaded polymer tubes to smooth gold nanofibers is studied by transmission electron microscopy and helium ion microscopy using both secondary electrons and Rutherford backscattered ions. Helium ion microscopy has been employed to investigate the ionoluminescence of various semiconductors. We have verified the possibility of application of this technique for high-resolution ionoluminescence analysis of this kind of materials. In this work the ionoluminescence signal was induced by a sub-nanometer He + beam with an energy of 35 keV. Several types of semiconductor samples were investigated: bulk materials, nanowires and quantum dots. All samples were found to exhibit ionoluminescence. However, the ionoluminescence signal rapidly degrades under the ion irradiation. The signal degradation was found to depend not only on the sample׳s composition, but also on its size.
