Abstract: The objectives of this study were to determine the effect of the milling degree (MD) of rice (Oryza sativa L.) on the heating rate, pathogen inactivation (Salmonella Typhimurium and Staphylococcus aureus), and color change resulting from radio frequency (RF) heating. Rice samples inoculated with pathogens were placed in a polypropylene jar and subjected to RF heating for 0 to 75 s. The heating rate of rice with a 2% MD was the highest during RF heating, followed by those with a 0, 8, and 10% MD; the reduction of pathogens showed the same trend. The reductions of pathogen levels in rice with MDs of 0 and 2% were significantly higher than those observed for rice with MDs of 8 and 10% under the same treatment conditions. For example, log reductions of Salmonella Typhimurium in rice by 55-s RF heating were 3.64, 5.19, 2.18, and 1.80 for MDs of 0, 2, 8, and 10%, respectively. At the same treatment conditions, log reductions of S. aureus were 2.77, 5.08, 1.15, and 0.90 for MDs of 0, 2, 8, and 10%, respectively. The color of rice measured according to L*, a*, and b* was not significantly altered after RF heating, regardless of the MD. DNA/RNA-gold nanoparticle (DNA/RNA-AuNP) nanoprobes have been widely employed for nanobiotechnology applications. Here, we discover that both thiolated and non-thiolated DNA/RNA can be efficiently attached to AuNPs to achieve high-stable spherical nucleic acid (SNA) within minutes under a domestic microwave (MW)-assisted heating-dry circumstance. Further studies show that for non-thiolated DNA/RNA the conjugation is poly (T/U) tag dependent. Spectroscopy, test strip hybridization, and loading counting experiments indicate that low-affinity poly (T/U) tag mediates the formation of a standing-up conformation, which is distributed in the outer layer of SNA structure. In further application studies, CRISPR/Cas9-sgRNA (136 bp), SARS-CoV-2 RNA fragment (1278 bp), and rolling circle amplification (RCA) DNA products (over 1000 bp) can be successfully attached on AuNPs, which overcomes the routine methods in long-chain nucleic acid-AuNP conjugation, exhibiting great promise in biosensing and nucleic acids delivery applications. Background: Perioperative hypothermia is a common occurrence, particularly with the elderly and pediatric age groups. Hypothermia is associated with an increased risk of perioperative complications. One method of preventing hypothermia is warming the infused fluids given during surgery. The enFlow™ intravenous fluid warmer has recently been reintroduced with a parylene coating on its heating blocks. In this paper, we evaluated the impact of the parylene coating on the new enFlow's fluid warming capacity., Methods: Six coated and six uncoated enFlow cartridges were used. A solution of 10% propylene glycol and 90% distilled H 2 O was infused into each heating cartridge at flow rates of 2, 10, 50, 150, and 200 ml/min. The infused fluid temperature was set at 4 °C, 20 °C, and 37 °C. Output temperature was recorded at each level. Data for analysis was derived from 18 runs at each flow rate (six cartridges at three temperatures)., Results: The parylene coated fluid warming cartridge delivered very stable output of 40 °C temperatures at flow rates of 2, 10, and 50 ml/min regardless of the temperature of the infusate. At higher flow rates, the cartridges were not able to achieve the target temperature with the colder fluid. Both cartridges performed with similar efficacy across all flow rates at all temperatures., Conclusions: At low flow rates, the parylene coated enFlow cartridges was comparable to the original uncoated cartridges. At higher flow rates, the coated and uncoated cartridges were not able to achieve the target temperature. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) plays a key role in neuronal adaptations. While previous studies suggest that whole-body heating can elevate circulating BDNF concentration, this is not known for local heating protocols. This study investigated the acute effects of whole-body versus local passive heating on serum and plasma BDNF concentration. Using a water-perfused suit, ten recreationally active males underwent three 90 min experimental protocols: heating of the legs with upper-body cooling (LBH), whole-body heating (WBH) and a control condition (CON). Blood samples were collected before, immediately after and 1 h post-heating for the determination of serum and plasma BDNF concentration, platelet count as well as the BDNF release per platelet. Rectal temperature, cardiac output and femoral artery shear rate were assessed at regular intervals. Serum and plasma BDNF concentration were elevated after WBH (serum: 19.1±5.0 to 25.9±11.3 ng/ml, plasma: 2.74±0.9 to 4.58±2.0; p<0.044), but not LBH (serum: 19.1±4.7 to 22.3±4.8 ng/ml, plasma: 3.25±1.13 to 3.39±0.90 ng/ml; p>0.126), when compared with CON (serum: 18.6±6.4 to 16.8±3.4 ng/ml, plasma: 2.49±0.69 to 2.82±0.89 ng/ml); accompanied by an increase in platelet count (p<0.001). However, there was no change in BDNF content per platelet after either condition (p = 0.392). All physiological measures were elevated to a larger extent after WBH compared with LBH (p<0.001), while shear rate and rectal temperature were higher during LBH than CON (p<0.038). In conclusion, WBH but not LBH acutely elevates circulating BDNF concentration. While these findings further support the use of passive heating to elevate BDNF concentration, a larger increase in shear rate, sympathetic activity and/or rectal temperature than found after LBH appears needed to induce an acute BDNF response by passive heating., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist.

With the proliferation of tobacco products, there might be a need for more complex models than current two-product models. We have developed a three-product model able to represent interactions between three products in the marketplace. We also investigate if using several implementations of two-product models could provide sufficient information to assess 3 coexisting products. Italy is used as case-study with THPs and e-cigarettes as the products under investigation. We use transitions rates estimated for THPs in Japan and e-cigarettes in the USA to project what could happen if the Italian population were to behave as the Japanese for THP or USA for e-cigarettes. Results suggest that three-product models may be hindered by data availability while two product models could miss potential synergies between products. Both, THP and E-Cigarette scenarios, led to reduction in life-years lost although the Japanese THP scenario reductions were 3 times larger than the USA e-cigarette projections., Competing Interests: OC, SF, AW, and JM are employees of British American Tobacco. The aim of this study was to investigate whether biomarkers of exposure (BoE) and potential harm (BoPH) are modified when smokers switch from smoking cigarettes to exclusive use of a tobacco heating product (THP) in an ambulatory setting. Participants in this randomised, controlled study were healthy volunteer smokers assigned either to continue smoking or switch to a THP, and a control group of smokers who abstained from cigarette smoking. Various BoE and BoPH related to oxidative stress, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, and cancer were assessed at baseline and up to 180 days. In continuing smokers, BoE and BoPH remained stable between baseline and day 180, while THP users' levels of most BoE reduced significantly, becoming similar to those in controls abstaining from cigarette smoking. Also at 180 days, significant changes in numerous BoPH, including total 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanol, 8-epi-prostaglandin F2α type III, fractional concentration of exhaled nitric oxide and white blood cell count, were directionally consistent with lessened health impact. Microwave irradiation has become a popular heating technique in organic synthesis, mainly due to its short reaction times, solventless reactions, and, sometimes, higher yields. Additionally, microwave irradiation lowers energy consumption and, consequently, is ideal for optimization processes. Moreover, there is evidence that microwave irradiation can improve the regioselectivity and stereoselectivity aspects of vital importance in synthesizing bioactive compounds. These crucial features of microwave irradiation contribute to its inclusion in green chemistry procedures. Since 2003, the use of microwave-assisted organic synthesis has become common in our laboratory, making our group one of the first Portuguese research groups to implement this heating source in organic synthesis. Our achievements in the transformation of heterocyclic compounds, such as ( E / Z )-3-styryl-4 H -chromen-4-ones, ( E )-3-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-4-styryl-1 H -pyrazole, ( E )-2-(4-arylbut-1-en-3-yn-1-yl)-4 H -chromen-4-ones, or ( E )-2-[2-(5-aryl-2-methyl-2 H -1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)vinyl]-4 H -chromen-4-ones, will be discussed in this review, highlighting the benefits of microwave irradiation use in organic synthesis.

The infrared heating of preconditioned cowpea improves its utilization and potential application in food systems. This study investigated the effect of optimizing preconditioning and infrared heating parameters of temperature and time on cooking characteristics of precooked cowpeas using response surface methodology (RSM). The moisture level (32-57%), infrared heating temperature (114-185 °C), and time of processing the seeds (2-18 min) were optimized using a randomized central composite design to achieve optimal characteristics for bulk density and water absorption. A second-order polynomial regression model was fitted to the obtained data, and the fitted model was used to compute the multi-response optimum processing conditions, which were the moisture of 45%, the heating temperature of 185 °C, and time of 5 min. Precooked cowpea seeds from optimized conditions had a 19% increase in pectin solubility. The total phenolic and total flavonoid contents were significantly reduced through complexation of the seeds' phenolic compounds with other macromolecules but nonetheless exhibited antioxidant properties capable of scavenging free radicals. There was also a significant reduction in phytate and oxalates by 24% and 42%, respectively, which was due to the heat causing the inactivation of these antinutrients. The obtained optimized conditions are adequate in the production of precooked cowpea seeds with improved quality.

Providing optimal operating conditions is one of the major challenges for effective heating or cooling systems. Moreover, proper adjustment of the heat transfer fluid is also important from the viewpoint of the correct operation, maintenance, and cost efficiency of these systems. Therefore, in this paper, a detailed review of recent work on the subject of conventional and novel heat transfer fluid applications is presented. Particular attention is paid to the novel nanoparticle-based materials used as heat transfer fluids. In-depth comparison of environmental, technical, and economic characteristics is discussed. Thermophysical properties including thermal conductivity, specific heat, density, viscosity, and Prandtl number are compared. Furthermore, the possible benefits and limitations of various transfer fluids in the fields of application are taken into account.

To improve the performance of wind sensors in the high velocity range, this paper proposes a wind measurement strategy for thermal wind velocity sensors that combines the constant power and constant temperature difference driving modes of the heating element. Based on the airflow distribution characteristics from fluid dynamics, sequential measurement and correction is proposed as a method of measuring wind direction. In addition, a wind velocity and direction measurement instrument was developed using the above-mentioned approaches. The test results showed that the proposed instrument can obtain large dynamic wind velocity measurements from 0 to 60 m/s. The wind velocity measurement accuracy was ±0.5 m/s in the common velocity range of 0-20 m/s and ±1 m/s in the high velocity range of 20-60 m/s. The wind direction accuracy was ±3° throughout the 360° range. Purpose: To evaluate heating of a redilatable stent for the treatment of aortic coarctation in neonates and small children in the new imaging modality magnetic particle imaging and established magnetic resonance imaging., Materials and Methods: The cobalt-chromium stent (BabyStent, OSYPKA AG, Rheinfelden, Germany) has a stent design which allows for redilatation and adjustment of the diameter from 6 to 16 mm for a use in aortic coarctation. The stent loses its radial integrity while opening at predetermined breaking points at a diameter of 14 mm or 16 mm, respectively. We measured the temperature increase in the stent at different diameters during 7-min magnetic particle imaging and magnetic resonance imaging scans with fiber optic thermometers under static conditions surrounded by air. In magnetic particle imaging, stents with diameters from 6 to 16 mm were tested while in magnetic resonance imaging only stents with diameters of 6 mm and 14 mm were investigated exemplarily., Result: In magnetic particle imaging, the measured temperature differences increased up to 4.7 K with growing diameters, whereas the opened stents with discontinuous struts at 14 and 16 mm showed only minimal heating of max. 0.5 K. In contrast to magnetic particle imaging, our measurements showed no heating of the stents during magnetic resonance imaging under identical conditions., Conclusion: The BabyStent did show only slight heating in magnetic particle imaging and no detectable temperature increase in magnetic resonance imaging.

Molten white chocolate held at high temperatures for extended periods of time undergoes thickening and nonenzymatic browning reactions. Lactose and milk proteins participate in Maillard browning, which occurs more rapidly at higher temperatures. Crystallization of amorphous lactose and high temperature contribute to rheological changes over heating. In the present study, five white chocolates of varied compositions were sampled over time at different temperatures. White chocolates containing amorphous lactose showed increases in complex viscosity, while chocolates with crystalline or no lactose showed no change in rheological properties. Maillard browning was measured through both colorimetry and spectrophotometric analysis of brown pigments. Both markers showed the greatest browning for Nonfat dry milk (NFDM)-containing systems. Chocolates containing no NFDM (milk protein isolate, MPI, or crystalline lactose) showed no change in absorbance after clarification, but some browning in colorimetry results, likely due to residual amorphous lactose in the MPI or increased mobility of lactose from crystals at high temperatures. The evolution of fluorescent intermediates was visualized using fluorescence spectroscopy, revealing that these intermediates were formed prior to colored end stage products and were consumed as the reaction approaches completion. An excess of lactose in the system meant reducing sugar declines were relatively small throughout. Kinetic models were created to determine the influence of chocolate composition and temperature on thickening as related to complex viscosity (first order) and browning via colorimetry and absorbance (pseudo-zero order). Both thickening rate and Maillard reaction rates were faster in chocolates with greater levels of amorphous lactose and when held at higher temperatures. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: So-called "golden chocolate" is white chocolate that has been held at warm temperatures for a period of time to undergo Maillard browning. However, thickening of the chocolate during heating can cause processing problems. • The progress of oil shale in-situ conversion technology is reviewed extensively. • Pores/fractures formed in oil shale pyrolysis constitute a channel for fluid flow. • Oil shale in-situ steam injection technology is proposed. • The principles of effective pyrolysis energy of oil shale are proposed. Oil shale is an important strategic resource with tremendous reserve. In-situ retorting is the only technology available to achieve large-scale industrial exploitation. This paper systematically introduces the intensive researches conducted by Zhao's team on oil shale retorting, as well as the progress of oil shale in-situ conversion technology in the world. The oil shale deposit in sedimentary strata with hidden layering, and the kerogen in oil shale is dispersed in flat strips that ranges from a few to tens of microns in size. A large amount of micro-scale pores and fractures are formed along the bedding in oil shale during the in-situ pyrolysis process, which creates connected channels and enhances the effectiveness of thermal fluid injection and the yield of pyrolysis products. Back to 2005, Zhao's team invented the oil shale in-situ retorting technology by injecting superheated steam, and related technical advantages are analyzed in detail. The principles of effective pyrolysis energy of oil shale are proposed so as to evaluate development stage of the reserve, meantime, the advantages of steam as a heat carrier fluid are specified by comparing the effective injection energy of steam and other gases. Furthermore, the scientific, technical, industrial advances of latest developments, including electric heating, fluid injection heating, combustion, and radiant heating in oil shale in-situ conversion technology are reviewed in detail. Abstract: Briquette-based kotatsu, a traditional Japanese heating system, is still used in rural areas and has been linked to the development of acute carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. This study aimed to investigate the occurrence of delayed neurologic sequelae (DNS) in patients with acute CO poisoning caused by briquette-based kotatsu.This retrospective study included 17 patients treated for acute CO poisoning due to briquette-based kotatsu, between April 2017 and March 2020. Patients were divided into either a sequelae group (3 patients) or a non-sequelae group (14 patients) based on the presence or absence, respectively, of DNS. Demographic data, kotatsu characteristics, clinical findings, and therapies were compared between the 2 groups.Significant differences were noted in patient posture during their initial discovery. Specifically, all non-sequelae patients only had their legs under the kotatsu quilt and all sequelae patients had their entire bodies under the kotatsu quilt (P = .001). There were no statistically significant differences in carbon monoxide levels in hemoglobin (CO-Hb) or the creatine-kinase myocardial band (CK-MB), between the 2 groups; however, troponin-I levels were significantly higher in the sequelae group (P = .026). Abnormal head imaging findings were noted in 2 sequelae-group patients, with a significant difference between the groups (P = .025).We speculate that acute CO poisoning, caused by briquette-based kotatsu, may lead to DNS more frequently in patients in who cover their entire body with the kotatsu quilt and are found in this position. Background: Physical limitation, which has been linked to outdoor air pollution exposure in previous studies, is a risk factor for disability and even for premature death. Although people often spend more time indoors, the relationship between indoor air pollution and physical function has not been fully explored., Methods: The associations of household fuel types with self-reported and performance-based physical functioning were tested on a total of 12,458 participants in the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARL), using generalized linear models and logistic regression models. Additionally, subgroup analyses according to smoking status and number of chronic diseases, were performed regarding these associations., Results: Our results revealed that after adjusting for potential confounds, solid fuel use in cooking showed -0.08 (-0.13, -0.04) and -0.15 (-0.23, -0.06) declines in self-reported and performance-based physical functioning scores (higher scores means fewer physical limitations), when compared with cleaner groups, respectively. Considering these outcomes as binary variables, the ORs (95% CIs) for abnormal self-reported and performance-based physical functioning in the solid fuel cooking group were 1.226 (1.053-1.427) and 1.194 (1.072-1.330), respectively. No significant association between heating fuel use and physical functioning was observed. Additionally, no modification effect of smoking status and the number of chronic diseases on the association between cooking fuel use and performance-based physical functioning was observed (P > 0.05)., Conclusion: Our findings suggested that solid cooking fuel use may be associated with self-reported and performance-based physical functioning decline of middle-aged and elder Chinese populations., (Copyright © 2021 The Authors. Introduction: The prevalence of asthma in Chile ranges from 10.2 to 14.9%. In previous studies, the Araucanía Region has not been included., Objective: To determine the prevalence of asthma in the school po pulation of the Araucanía Region., Subjects and Method: The ISAAC questionnaires were used for asthma symptoms in addition to a questionnaire for recording sociodemographic data, belonging to the Mapuche ethnicity, type of heating, exposure to indoor air pollution, and family history. The Binomial Regression Model was used to evaluate the effect of each of the different variables of inter est, adjusting by age groups (6-7 and 13-14 years). The model also evaluated the additive interaction between these variables and age., Results: 823 surveys were applied, where the prevalence of asthma was 14.2% and 23.2% in the 6-7 year old group and the 13-14 year old group, respectively. 43.7% de clare to be Mapuche, 32.9% live in rural areas, and 81.4% use firewood as a heating method. Through binomial regression model analysis, where for the study group, living in the coastal commune was significantly associated with a lower prevalence of asthma (-13.2% [CI: -17.7 to -8.6]. The history of an asthmatic mother was significantly associated with a higher prevalence of asthma (17.9% [CI: 2.7 to 33.1]. Living in a rural area, to be Mapuche or the type of heating used, showed differences statistically significant (p 0.18, p 0.609 and p 0.480, respectively) Conclusion: 13-14 year-olds school children in the Araucanía Region presented a higher prevalence of asthma. There was an association with asthma in the mother where this increase is not associated with living in a rural area, to be Ma puche or type of heating.

Background: This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of peri-induction forced air warming to prevent inadvertent perioperative hypothermia, defined as a reduction in body temperature to <36.0°C during the perioperative period, in intraoperatively warmed patients receiving major surgery lasting >120 minutes., Methods: In total, 130 patients scheduled for elective surgery under general anesthesia lasting >120 minutes were divided into 2 groups: peri-induction warming (n = 65) and control (n = 65). Patients in the peri-induction warming group were warmed during the anesthetic induction period using a forced-air warmer set at 47°C, whereas patients in the control group were covered passively with a cotton blanket. All patients were warmed with a forced-air warmer during surgery. Body temperature was measured using a tympanic membrane thermometer in the pre- and postoperative periods and using a nasopharyngeal temperature probe during surgery. Patients were evaluated for shivering scale score, thermal comfort scale score, and satisfaction score in the post-anesthesia care unit., Results: The incidence rates of intraoperative and postoperative hypothermia were lower in the peri-induction warming group than in the control group (19.0% vs 57.1%, P < .001; 3.3% vs 16.9%, P = .013, respectively). Body temperature was higher in the peri-induction warming group (P < .001). However, intraoperative blood loss, as well as postoperative thermal comfort scale score, shivering scale score, and patient satisfaction score, were similar between groups. Myeloid derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) are a diverse collection of immune cells that suppress anti-tumor immune responses. Decreasing MDSCs accumulation in the tumor microenvironment could improve the anti-tumor immune response and improve immunotherapy. Here, we examine the impact of physiologically relevant thermal treatments on the accumulation of MDSCs in tumors in mice. We found that different temperature-based protocols, including 1) weekly whole-body hyperthermia, 2) housing mice at their thermoneutral temperature (TT, ~30 °C), and 3) housing mice at a subthermoneutral temperature (ST,~22 °C) while providing a localized heat source, each resulted in a reduction in MDSC accumulation and improved tumor growth control compared to control mice housed at ST, which is the standard, mandated housing temperature for laboratory mice. Additionally, we found that low dose β-adrenergic receptor blocker (propranolol) therapy reduced MDSC accumulation and improved tumor growth control to a similar degree as the models that relieved cold stress. Neuropathic pain (NP) is a common complication that negatively affects the lives of patients with spinal cord injury (SCI). The disruption in the balance of excitatory and inhibitory neurons in the spinal cord dorsal horn contributes to the development of SCI and induces NP. The calcium-binding protein (CaBP) calbindin-D 28K (CaBP-28K) is highly expressed in excitatory interneurons, and the CaBP parvalbumin (PV) is present in inhibitory neurons in the dorsal horn. To better define the changes in the CaBPs contributing to the development of SCI-induced NP, we examined the changes in CaBP-28K and PV staining density in the lumbar (L4-6) lamina I and II, and their relationship with NP after mild spinal cord contusion injury in mice. We additionally examined the effects of alternate thermal stimulation (ATS). Compared with sham mice, injured animals developed mechanical allodynia in response to light mechanical stimuli and exhibited mechanical hyporesponsiveness to noxious mechanical stimuli. The decreased response latency to heat stimuli and increased response latency to cold stimuli at 7 days post injury suggested that the injured mice developed heat hyperalgesia and cold hypoalgesia, respectively. Temperature preference tests showed significant warm allodynia after injury. Animals that underwent ATS (15-18 and 35-40°C; +5 minutes/stimulation/day; 5 days/week) displayed significant amelioration of heat hyperalgesia, cold hypoalgesia, and warm allodynia after 2 weeks of ATS. In contrast, mechanical sensitivity was not influenced by ATS. Analysis of the CaBP-28K positive signal in L4-6 lamina I and II indicated an increase in staining density after SCI, which was associated with an increase in the number of CaBP-28K-stained L4-6 dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons. ATS decreased the CaBP-28K staining density in L4-6 spinal cord and DRG in injured animals, and was significantly and strongly correlated with ATS alleviation of pain behavior. The expression of PV showed no changes in lamina I and II after ATS in SCI animals. Tuberculin skin test, also known as the tuberculin or purified protein derivative (PPD) test, is an extensively applied diagnostic test for the detection of primary infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb). The production of PPD is accompanied by some difficulties that require a series of modifications in the production and purification processes. The present study aimed to determine the facilitation level of the manufacturing process by modifying evaluation methods for the production of PPD tuberculin. Mtb strains were cultured in Lowenstein-Jensen media, and the cultured strains were inoculated into the Dorset-Henley liquid medium by the biphasic medium of potato-Dorset-Henley. After incubation, flasks containing cultured strain were selected for bacterial inactivation, and the optimal gamma radiation dose(s) was determined. Tuberculoproteins were precipitated by ammonium sulfate (AS) and Trichloroacetic acid (TCA). Protein concentration was determined using the Bradford and Kjeldahl protein assay methods. Finally, the lymphocyte transformation test and potency test were performed. Based on the results, the Dorset-Henley liquid medium is suitable for the massive growth of the bacterium. The transferal of Mtb from solid to liquid medium was directly carried out without intermediate culture. It was found that during tuberculoprotein production, heating at 100&deg;C for 3 h would be safe for killing mycobacterium. Furthermore, the simultaneous use of heating and gamma irradiation (8 kGgy) killed all of the mycobacteria, while doses of 1, 1.5, and 7 kGy decreased a significant number of bacterial cells. The results also indicated that the concentration of tuberculoprotein extracted by TCA precipitation method was higher than that obtained by AS precipitation. The tuberculoproteins which were produced by these two methods in the lymphocyte transformation test were not significantly different in terms of potency (P&gt;0.05). Moreover, due to the high volume of produced protein, the protein measurement was more efficiently carried out by the Kjeldahl method, compared to the Bradford method. New Findings: What is the central question of this study? How do temperature manipulations affect motor unit (MU) properties during submaximal contractions to the same relative percentage of maximal force? What is the main finding and its importance? MU recruitment patterns are affected by temperature manipulations at the forearm. However, the relationship between MU potential amplitude and recruitment threshold indicates no change to the order or recruitment. Additionally, the MU potential amplitude and firing rate relationship was affected by temperature, suggesting that smaller MUs are more affected by temperature changes than larger MUs., Abstract: Temperature impacts muscle contractile properties, such that experiments with workloads based on thermoneutral values will produce different relative intensities if maximal force changes due to muscle temperature. We investigated how temperature affected motor unit (MU) properties with contractions performed at the same normalized percentage of maximal force. Twenty participants (10 females) completed evoked, maximal, and trapezoidal voluntary contractions during thermoneutral-, hot-, and cold-temperature conditions. Forearm temperature was established using 25 min of neutral (∼32°C), hot (∼44°C) or cold (∼13°C) water circulated through a tube-lined sleeve. Flexor carpi radialis MU properties were assessed with contractions at 30% and 60% MVC relative to each temperature using surface electromyography decomposition. Changes to contractile properties and electromechanical delay from the evoked twitch suggest that muscle contractility was changed from the thermal manipulations (effect size (d) ≥ 0.42, P < 0.05). Maximal force was not different between neutral and hot conditions (d = 0.16, P > 0.05) but decreased in the cold (d ≥ 0.34, P < 0.05). For both contraction intensities, MU potential (MUP) amplitude was larger and duration was longer in the cold compared to neutral and hot conditions (d ≥ 1.24, P < 0.05). Cumulative probability density for the number of MUs recruited revealed differences in MU recruitment patterns among temperature conditions. The relationship between MU recruitment threshold and firing rate or MUP amplitude was not different among temperature conditions (P > 0.05); however, the relationship between MUP amplitude and firing rate was (P < 0.05). Use of carbon dots (CDs) combined with radio frequency (RF) was applied to pasteurize and reduce the microorganism population in order to improve the quality of boiled gansi dish. CDs were prepared from banana using hydrothermal method, and characterized by using TEM, XRD and FTIR. The minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) test showed CDs can efficiently inactivate Escherichia coli (E. coli), Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Bacillus subtilis (B. subtilis). This study also evaluated the effectiveness of five treatments, including CDs alone, CDs combined RF (CDRF) heating for different time (8 min, 12 min, and 16 min), and high pressure steam (HPS) sterilization of boiled gansi dish inoculated with B. subtilis. After CDRF treated for 8 min, 12 min, and 16 min, the center temperature of samples reached to 78.92, 87.77 and 93.82 °C, and the colony forming units (CFU) of B. subtilis reduced by 2.13, 3.62, and 4.63 log, respectively. Samples with CDRF12 treatment, exhibited better product quality as evidenced by reduced loss of texture, flavor, and sensory as compared with HPS sample. Background: While the environment contributes to EoE pathogenesis, few environmental risk factors for EoE have been identified., Aim: To determine whether housing components such as exterior materials, heating systems, and house age are associated with EoE., Methods: This case-control study used the UNC EoE clinicopathologic database to identify newly diagnosed EoE patients. Controls were patients without EoE who underwent endoscopy during the study time frame. Housing data were collected from publicly available online sources, and cases and controls were compared. The primary analysis was restricted to those living at their provided address at the time of diagnostic endoscopy. Multivariable logistical regression estimated associations after adjusting for potential confounders., Results: Of 451 EoE cases and 2421 controls identified, the primary analysis included 158 cases and 769 controls. Compared to controls, EoE cases were more likely to have a house with a brick exterior (35% vs 26%; p = 0.04), gas heating (14% vs 8%; p = 0.06), or forced air (57% vs 45%; p = 0.009). In adjusted analysis, brick exterior was positively associated with EoE diagnosis [aOR 1.83 (95% CI 1.11-3.02)]. The average duration a patient lived in their house before EoE diagnosis was 7.2 ± 5.9 years, while symptom duration prior to diagnosis was 6.8 ± 8.4 years., Conclusion: EoE patients were more likely to have houses with a brick exterior, forced air, or gas heating, and brick exteriors were independently associated with EoE. Since symptoms generally started after moving into a house, housing-related environmental exposures may contribute to EoE disease development.

Scale-up of production is needed for industrial applications and clinical translation of human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs). However, in cryopreservation of hiPSCs, successful rewarming of vitrified cells can only be achieved by convective warming of small volumes (generally 0.2 mL). Here, we present a scalable nano-warming technology for hiPSC cryopreservation employing inductive heating of magnetic nanoparticles under an alternating magnetic field. The conventional method by water bath heating at 37 °C resulted in a decrease of cell viability owing to devitrification caused by slow warming of samples with large volumes (≥ 20 mL). Nano-warming showed uniform and rapid rewarming of vitrified samples and improved viability of hiPSCs in the 20-mL system. In addition to single cells, hiPSC aggregates prepared using a bioreactor-based approach were successfully cryopreserved by the nano-warming technique. These results demonstrate that nano-warming is a promising methodology for cryopreservation in mass production of hiPSCs.

The world is facing a pandemic of unseen proportions caused by a corona virus named SARS-CoV-2 with unprecedent worldwide measures being taken to tackle its contagion. Person-to-person transmission is accepted but WHO only considers aerosol transmission when procedures or support treatments that produce aerosol are performed. Transmission mechanisms are not fully understood and there is evidence for an airborne route to be considered, as the virus remains viable in aerosols for at least 3 h and that mask usage was the best intervention to prevent infection. Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning Systems (HVAC) are used as a primary infection disease control measure. However, if not correctly used, they may contribute to the transmission/spreading of airborne diseases as proposed in the past for SARS. The authors believe that airborne transmission is possible and that HVAC systems when not adequately used may contribute to the transmission of the virus, as suggested by descriptions from Japan, Germany, and the Diamond Princess Cruise Ship. Previous SARS outbreaks reported at Amoy Gardens, Emergency Rooms and Hotels, also suggested an airborne transmission. We developed an efficient microwave-assisted three-step synthesis of zolpidem and its fluorinated analogues 1 - 3 . The procedure relays on the utilization of easily accessible and inexpensive starting materials. Our protocol shows superior performance in terms of yield and purity of products, compared to conventional heating systems. Notably, the total time needed for reaction accomplishment is significantly lower comparing to oil bath heating systems. Finally, we have performed a detailed study on the preparation of zolpidem tartrate salt I , and we assessed its particle-sizes using a polarizing microscope. Our goal was to select the appropriate method that generates the acceptable particle-size, since the solid-size directly influences solubility in biological fluids and further bioavailability. We believe that the disclosed procedure will help to produce a lab-scale quantity of zolpidem and its fluorinated derivatives 1 - 3 , as well as zolpidem tartrate salt I, with suitable fine-particle size for further biological experimentation., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

The aim of this research was to investigate the efficacy of the duty ratio and applied voltage in the inactivation of pathogens in soybean curd by pulsed ohmic heating (POH). The heating rate of soybean curd increased rapidly as the applied voltage increased, although the duty ratio did not affect the temperature profile. We supported this result by verifying that electrical conductivity increased with the applied voltage. Escherichia coli O157:H7, Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium, and Listeria monocytogenes in soybean curd were significantly ( P <  0.05) inactivated by more than 1 log unit at 80 V rms (root mean square voltage). To elucidate the mechanism underlying these results, the membrane potential of the pathogens was examined using DiBAC 4 (3) [bis-(1,3-dibutylbarbituric acid)trimethine oxonol] on the basis of a previous study showing that the electric field generated by ohmic heating affected the membrane potential of cells. The values of DiBAC 4 (3) accumulation increased under increasing applied voltage, and they were significantly ( P <  0.05) higher at 80 V rms , while the duty ratio had no effect. In addition, morphological analysis via transmission electron microscopy showed that electroporation and expulsion of intracellular materials were predominant at 80 V rms Moreover, electrode corrosion was overcome by the POH technique, and the textural and color properties of soybean curd were preserved. These results substantiate the idea that the applied voltage has a profound effect on the microbial inactivation of POH as a consequence of not only the thermal effect, but also the nonthermal effect, of the electric field, whereas the duty ratio does not have such an effect. IMPORTANCE High-water-activity food products, such as soybean curd, are vulnerable to microbial contamination, which causes fatal foodborne diseases and food spoilage. Inactivating microorganisms inside food is difficult because the transfer of thermal energy is slower inside than it is outside the food. POH is an adequate sterilization technique because of its rapid and uniform heating without causing electrode corrosion. To elucidate the electrical factors associated with POH performance in the inactivation of pathogens, the effects of the applied voltage and duty ratio on POH were investigated. In this study, we verified that a high applied voltage (80 V rms ) at a duty ratio of 0.1 caused thermal and nonthermal effects on pathogens that led to an approximately 4-log-unit reduction in a significantly short time. A lack of N95 Filtering Facepiece Respirators (FFRs) during the COVID-19 crisis has placed healthcare workers at risk. It is important for any N95 reuse strategy to determine the effects that proposed protocols would have on the physical functioning of the mask, as well as the practical aspects of implementation. Here we propose and implement a method of heating N95 respirators with moisture (85°C, 60-85% humidity). We test both mask filtration efficiency and fit to validate this process. Our tests focus on the 3M 1860, 3M 1870, and 3M 8210 Plus N95 models. After five cycles of the heating procedure, all three respirators pass both quantitative fit testing (score of >100) and show no degradation of mask filtration efficiency. We also test the Chen Heng V9501 KN95 and HKYQ N95 finding no degradation of mask filtration efficiency, however even for unheated masks these scored <50 for every fit test. In the present study, the application of immersion ohmic heating was examined to improve thawing of frozen tuna fish cubes. The experimental tuna cubes (3 × 3 × 3 cm 3 ) were thawed under ohmic heating subjected to three different voltages (40, 50, and 60 V) with three different concentrations (0.3, 0.4, and 0.5% w/v) of brine solution. The parameters associated with the quality of tuna, such as thawing time, thawing rate, thawing loss, cooking and total losses, centrifugal loss, lipid oxidation, texture, and color, were investigated during ohmic heating thawing, and compared with the conventional still air thawing, water thawing at 27 and 40 ℃. The results showed that immersion ohmic thawing significantly decreased the thawing time of frozen tuna fish cubes. Thawing time in ohmic treatment (50 V- 0.3% brine) was 5.95 times shorter than conventional conditions. The lowest thawing and cooking losses were observed at ohmic treatments. In addition, the ohmic treatments (group 1) were evaluated versus conventional methods (group 2) and the results showed that thawing and total losses in group 1 were significantly lower than group 2.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that clinically used magnetic resonance (MR)-conditional needles of varying lengths, orientations, locations, and pulse sequences can result in excessive heating during MR imaging (MRI)-guided interventions that can be minimized to physiological ranges with proper selection of the needle length, needle position, and modification of pulse sequence parameters., Materials and Methods: We simulated a clinical interventional MRI setting with 2 standard American Society for Testing and Materials F2182-11A phantoms and measured temperatures with fiber optic sensors. Temperature profiles were monitored for commercial 10, 15 and 20 cm MR-conditional cobalt-chromium needles in clinically relevant perpendicular, 45-degree oblique, and parallel orientations relative to the static magnetic field (B0) and center, right off-center, and left off-center needle tip locations in the z = 0 plane. Clinically available interventional MRI pulse sequences including turbo spin echo (TSE), fast TSE, slice encoding for metal artifact correction, compressed sensing slice encoding for metal artifact correction, half-Fourier acquisition single-shot TSE (HASTE), HASTE inversion recovery, fluoroscopic steady-state gradient echo (3.0 T only), fast low-angle shot gradient echo, and volumetric interpolated breath-hold examination gradient echo pulse sequences were tested at 1.5 and 3.0 T field strengths. Acquired temperature data were analyzed using Friedman and Wilcoxon signed-rank tests with Bonferroni correction., Results: After 5-minute of continuous MRI, less than 2.5°C heating occurred when needles were oriented perpendicular and 45-degree oblique to B0, regardless of field strengths. Higher temperature rises capable of causing permanent tissue damage were observed when needles were oriented in parallel to B0 (1.5 T: 22°C with 20 cm needles, 3.0 T: 8°C with 10 and 15 cm needles) using higher radiofrequency energy pulse sequences, such as TSE and HASTE. Left off-center location, parallel orientation, and needle lengths close to half of the radiofrequency pulse wavelength were positively associated with higher temperature rises., Conclusions: Under the herein used experimental conditions, clinically used MR-conditional needles can heat to supraphysiologic temperatures during prolonged MRI at 1.5 and 3.0 T field strengths; however, the temperature rise can be balanced to physiological ranges with proper selection of needle length, needle orientation, and pulse sequence parameters. Caution must be exercised when using different MRI systems, as results may not directly translate.

Array-induced voltage was used to enhance the extraction of pectin from grapefruit peel. The voltages induced by synchronous alternating magnetic fluxes as stimulus, provided an efficient extraction approach. The dynamics of pectin extraction is described by a pseudo-first-order model. The pectin yield and extraction rate of pectin depended on the vector of the in-phase and reverse-phase voltages. The transposed arrangement of the voltages had no significant influence on the pectin extraction rate. The maximum yield of 10.34%, obtained at 1000 V, a 0° phase difference and a 3 × 3 in-phase voltage array, was 5.74- and 1.3-fold higher than that of the control (0 V) and conventional heating method, respectively. This approach led to a rapid release of pectin with lower neutral sugar content, average molecular weight, Galacturonic acid content, esterification degree, and dynamic viscosity as a result of local heating by the voltage sources (potential hotspots) in the sample solution. The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has led to a major shortage of N95 respirators, which are essential for protecting healthcare professionals and the general public who may come into contact with the virus. Thus, it is essential to determine how we can reuse respirators and other personal protective equipment in these urgent times. We investigated multiple commonly used disinfection schemes on media with particle filtration efficiency of 95%. Heating was recently found to inactivate the virus in solution within 5 min at 70 °C and is among the most scalable, user-friendly methods for viral disinfection. We found that heat (≤85 °C) under various humidities (≤100% relative humidity, RH) was the most promising, nondestructive method for the preservation of filtration properties in meltblown fabrics as well as N95-grade respirators. At 85 °C, 30% RH, we were able to perform 50 cycles of heat treatment without significant changes in the filtration efficiency. At low humidity or dry conditions, temperatures up to 100 °C were not found to alter the filtration efficiency significantly within 20 cycles of treatment. Ultraviolet (UV) irradiation was a secondary choice, which was able to withstand 10 cycles of treatment and showed small degradation by 20 cycles. However, UV can potentially impact the material strength and subsequent sealing of respirators. Finally, treatments involving liquids and vapors require caution, as steam, alcohol, and household bleach all may lead to degradation of the filtration efficiency, leaving the user vulnerable to the viral aerosols.

The aim of this review is to describe variation in standards and guidelines on 'heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC)' system maintenance in the intensive care units, across the world, which is required to maintain good 'indoor air quality' as an important non-pharmacological strategy in preventing hospital-acquired infections. An online search and review of standards and guidelines published by various societies including American Institute of Architects (AIA), American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Department of Health Estates and Facilities Division, Health Technical Memorandum 2025 (HTM) and Healthcare Infection Control Practices Advisory Committee (HICPAC) along with various national expert committee consensus statements, regional and hospital-based protocols available in a public domain were retrieved. Selected publications and textbooks describing HVAC structural aspects were also reviewed, and we described the basic structural details of HVAC system as well as variations in the practised standards of HVAC system in the ICU, worldwide. In summary, there is a need of universal standards for HVAC system with a specific mention on the type of ICU, which should be incorporated into existing infection control practice guidelines.

β-Lactoglobulin (β-LG) encompasses important biological functions, but it is also a major milk allergen, being responsible for the high incidence of cow's milk allergy in childhood. Despite numerous studies addressing the effect of thermal processing on the immunoreactivity of β-LG, little is known about the impact of emergent food processing technologies, such as ohmic heating (OH), on its immunoreactivity. This study describes, for the first time, the effects of thermal and electric effects of OH on the immunoreactivity of β-LG. The influence of high-temperature short time (HTST; 72.5 °C for 15 and 90 °C for 1 s) and low-temperature long time (LTLT; 65 °C for 30 min) pasteurization binomials combined with different electrical variables (electric field intensity and electrical frequency) was evaluated and compared with that of conventional heating. HTST at 90 °C for 1 s extensively affects the protein secondary structure and increases the levels of reactive aggregates, resulting in increased total immunoreactivity (assessed by ELISA and immunoblotting). OH at 4 V cm -1 and a frequency of 25 kHz reduced the immunoreactivity of monomeric β-LG and its resultant aggregates, compared with conventional heat treatments. In contrast, the presence of electric fields (4 V cm -1 and 25 kHz) during LTLT increased the immunoreactivity of monomeric β-LG. The thermal and electrical variables of OH change the balance between monomeric and aggregated forms of β-LG, affecting their ability to bind specific antibodies. These outcomes bring novel insights into how to modulate OH aiming at reducing the allergenic potential of β-LG based products.

Introduction: The Tobacco Heating System (THS) is a "heat-not-burn" tobacco product designed to generate significantly lower levels of harmful and potentially harmful constituents (HPHCs) and present lower risk of harm than cigarettes. This study assessed the exposure reduction to selected HPHCs in smokers switching to menthol Tobacco Heating System (mTHS) 2.2 compared with smokers continuing smoking menthol cigarettes (mCCs) and smoking abstinence (SA) for 5 days in a confined setting, followed by an 86-day ambulatory period., Methods: A total of 160 healthy adult US smokers participated in this randomized, three-arm parallel group, controlled clinical study. Biomarkers of exposure to 16 HPHCs were measured in blood and 24-hour urine. Safety was monitored throughout the study. Information was also gathered on product evaluation, product use, subjective effects, and clinical risk markers (co-publication Part 2)., Results: Nicotine uptake was comparable in both exposure groups (mTHS:mCC ratio of 96% on day 90). On day 5, biomarker of exposure levels to other HPHCs were reduced by 51%-96% in the mTHS group compared with the mCC group, and these reductions were sustained for most biomarkers of exposure over ambulatory period. Introduction: Tobacco Heating System (THS) 2.2, a candidate modified-risk tobacco product, aims at offering an alternative to cigarettes for smokers while substantially reducing the exposure to harmful and potentially harmful constituents found in cigarette smoke., Methods: One hundred and sixty healthy adult US smokers participated in this randomized, three-arm parallel group, controlled clinical study. Subjects were randomized in a 2:1:1 ratio to menthol Tobacco Heating System 2.2 (mTHS), menthol cigarette, or smoking abstinence for 5 days in confinement and 86 subsequent ambulatory days. Endpoints included biomarkers of exposure to harmful and potentially harmful constituents (reported in our co-publication, Part 1) and biomarkers of potential harm (BOPH)., Results: Compliance (protocol and allocated product exposure) was 51% and 18% in the mTHS and smoking abstinence arms, respectively, on day 90. Nonetheless, favorable changes in BOPHs of lipid metabolism (total cholesterol and high- and low-density cholesterol), endothelial dysfunction (soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1), oxidative stress (8-epi-prostaglandin F2α), and cardiovascular risk factors (eg, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein) were observed in the mTHS group. Favorable effects in other BOPHs, including ones related to platelet activation (11-dehydrothromboxane B2) and metabolic syndrome (glucose), were more pronounced in normal weight subjects., Conclusions: The results suggest that the reduced exposure demonstrated when switching to mTHS is associated with overall improvements in BOPHs, which are indicative of pathomechanistic pathways underlying the development of smoking-related diseases, with some stronger effects in normal weight subjects., Implications: Switching to mTHS was associated with favorable changes for some BOPHs indicative of biological pathway alterations (eg, oxidative stress and endothelial dysfunction). The results suggest that switching to mTHS has the potential to reduce the adverse health effects of smoking and ultimately the risk of smoking-related diseases. Switching to mTHS for 90 days led to reductions in a number of biomarkers of exposure in smokers, relative to those who continued smoking cigarettes, which were close to those observed when stopping smoking (reported in our co-publication, Part 1). Initial findings suggest reduced levels of 8-epi-prostaglandin F2α and intercellular adhesion molecule 1, when switching to mTHS for 90 days. These changes are comparable to what is observed upon smoking cessation. In normal weight subjects, additional favorable changes were seen in 11-dehydrothromboxane B2, fibrinogen, homocysteine, hs-CRP, percentage of predicted forced expiratory volume in 1 second, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, glucose, high-density lipoprotein, apolipoprotein A1, and triglycerides., Trial Registration: NCT01989156., (© The Author(s) 2019. A study was undertaken to identify patterns of consumer use of outdoor wood boilers or outdoor wood furnaces (technically referred to as outdoor wood-fired hydronic heaters (OWHHs)) and indoor wood stoves (IWSs) to inform the development of performance testing protocols that reflect real-life operating conditions. These devices are manually fed, and their usage protocols are a function of a number of variables, including user habits, household characteristics, and environmental factors. In this study, researchers logged the stack wall temperatures of 4 OWHH and 20 IWS units in the states of New York and Washington over two heating seasons. Stack wall temperature is an indicator of changes in combustion modes. Two algorithms were developed to identify usage modes and cold and warm start refueling events from the stack wall temperature time series. A linear correlation analysis was conducted to evaluate the effect of heat demand on usage patterns. The results and methods presented here will inform the cataloging of typical operational patterns of OWHHs and IWSs as a step in the development of performance testing procedures that represent actual in-home usage patterns. Implications : Current US regulatory programs for residential wood heating use a certification program to assess emissions and efficiency performance. Testing under this program uses a test that burns 100% of a single, standardized wood fuel charge to assess performance at different steady-state load conditions. This study assessed in-field operational patterns to determine if the current certification approach accurately characterized typical homeowner use patterns. The data from this study can be used to inform revisions to testing methods to increase certification test comparability between lab and field performance.

A pair of lightweight electrically heated gloves (EHG) with smart temperature control function was developed. To evaluate the thermoregulation properties of the EHG, human trials were conducted in a climate chamber (2.5 °C, 60% RH). The changes in skin temperature at all fingers and the opisthenar, and the subjective thermal sensation were recorded over 60 min. The effects of two air velocities (i.e., 0.17 and 0.50 m/s) on the cold protective performance of the EHG in scenarios of heating and control were also investigated. For heating scenarios, skin temperature and thermal sensation at all fingers and the opisthenar were found significantly higher than those in control conditions. Moreover, the air velocity at 0.50 m/s greatly reduced the cold protective performance of the gloves. The research findings can be applied to improve thermal comfort and extend working times for persons in cold environments.

Stunting adversely affects physical and mental outcomes of children. It has not been examined whether household air pollution from solid fuel combustion is a risk factor for stunting in children. In a total of 41,439 children aged 6-17 across China, height was measured using a unified protocol. Multivariable linear regression models and logistic regression models were used to assess the associations of solid fuel use for cooking/heating with stunting in children. Adjusted for covariates, cooking/heating with solid fuel was significantly associated with a lower z-score for height for age and sex (β = -0.21 [-0.32 to -0.09] and -0.17 [-0.31 to -0.03], respectively) and an increased risk of stunting with an estimated ORs of 1.34 [1.07~1.68] and 1.37 [1.02~1.83], respectively. The risk of stunting associated with solid fuel use was statistically significant in high-age children. And the effect was greater on girls than on boys, though the difference was not statistically significant. The aim of the study was to investigate the suitability of a convection oven to induce in situ amorphization. The study was conducted using microwave radiation-induced in situ amorphization as reference, as it has recently been shown to enable the preparation of a fully (100%) amorphous solid dispersion of celecoxib (CCX) in polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) after 10 min of continuous microwaving. For comparison, the experimental setup of the microwave-induced method was mimicked for the convection-induced method. Compacts containing crystalline CCX and PVP were prepared and either pre-conditioned at 75% relative humidity or kept dry to investigate the effect of sorbed water on the amorphization kinetics. Subsequently, the compacts were heated for 5, 10, 15, 20, or 30 min in the convection oven at 100 °C. The degree of amorphization of CCX in the compacts was subsequently quantified using transmission Raman spectroscopy. Using the convection oven, the maximum degree of amorphization achieved was 96.1% ± 2.1% ( n = 3) for the conditioned compacts after 30 min of heating and 14.3% ± 1.4% ( n = 3) for the dry compacts after 20 min of heating, respectively. Based on the results from the convection and the microwave oven, it was found that the sorbed water acts as a plasticizer in the conditioned compacts (i.e., increasing molecular mobility), which is advantageous for in situ amorphization in both methods. Since the underlying mechanism of heating between the convection oven and microwave oven differs, it was found that convection-induced in situ amorphization is inferior to microwave radiation-induced in situ amorphization in terms of amorphization kinetics with the present experimental setup.

Background: Preventing the frequent perioperative hypothermia incidents that occur during elective caesarean deliveries would be beneficial. This trial aimed at evaluating the effect of preoperative forced-air warming alongside perioperative intravenous fluid warming in women undergoing cesarean sections under spinal anesthesia., Methods: We randomly allocated 135 women undergoing elective cesarean deliveries to either the intervention group (preoperative forced-air and intravenous fluid warming, n = 69) or the control group (no active warming, n = 66). The primary outcome measure was the core temperature change between groups from baseline to the end of the surgical procedure. Secondary outcomes included thermal comfort scores, the incidences of shivering and hypothermia (< 36 °C), the core temperature on arrival at the post-anesthesia care unit, neonatal axillary temperature at birth, and Apgar scores., Results: Two-way repeated measures ANOVA revealed significantly different core temperature changes (from the pre-spinal temperature to that at the end of the procedure) between groups (F = 13.022, P < 0.001). The thermal comfort scores were also higher in the intervention group than in the control group (F = 9.847, P = 0.002). The overall incidence of perioperative hypothermia was significantly lower in the intervention group than in the control group (20.6% vs. 51.6%, P < 0.0001)., Conclusions: Warming preoperative forced-air and perioperative intravenous fluids may prevent maternal hypothermia, reduce maternal shivering, and improve maternal thermal comfort for patients undergoing cesarean sections under spinal anesthesia., Trial Registration: The study was registered with the Chinese Clinical Trial Registry (registration number: ChiCTR1800019117) on October26, 2018.

Ambient air monitoring and phone survey data were collected in three environmental justice (EJ) and three non-EJ communities in Sacramento County during winter 2016-2017 to understand the differences in air toxics and in wood smoke pollution among communities. Concentrations of six hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) and black carbon (BC) from fossil fuel (BC ff ) were significantly higher at EJ communities versus non-EJ communities. BC from wood burning (BC wb ) was significantly higher at non-EJ communities. Correlation analysis indicated that the six HAPs were predominantly from fossil fuel combustion sources, not from wood burning. The HAPs were moderately variable across sites (coefficient of divergence (COD) range of 0.07 for carbon tetrachloride to 0.28 for m- and p-xylenes), while BC ff and BC wb were highly variable (COD values of 0.46 and 0.50). The BC wb was well correlated with levoglucosan ( R 2 of 0.68 to 0.95), indicating that BC wb was a robust indicator for wood burning. At the two permanent monitoring sites, wood burning comprised 29-39% of the fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) on nights when PM 2.5 concentrations were forecasted to be high. Phone survey data were consistent with study measurements; the only significant difference in the survey results among communities were that non-EJ residents burn with indoor devices more often than EJ residents.

To investigate the inactivation mechanism of ohmic heating (OH) on Escherichia coli O157:H7 at the same inactivation levels, a label-free quantitative proteomic approach was employed in this study. Quantification of 2633 proteins was obtained with high confidence. Compared to untreated samples (CT), a total of 169, 84, and 26 proteins showed significantly differential abundance after high voltage OH (HVOH, 10 V/cm), low voltage OH (LVOH, 5 V/cm), and water bath heating (WB), respectively. Glyoxylate and dicarboxylate metabolism, ABC transporters, biosynthesis of amino acids, glycerophospholipid metabolism, and ribosome pathway were the main KEGG pathways mediated by OH, but only ribosome pathway was greatly affected by WB. The significant differences in proteome changes of E. coli O157:H7 among HVOH, LVOH, and WB treatments, especially the greater number of differential proteins in HVOH, indicated that OH might exert additional effects on proteome of E. coli O157:H7 due to the electric current, particularly in HVOH with higher electric field. This result enriched our understanding of molecular changes of E. coli O157:H7 induced by OH and provided data reference for further research into the inactivation mechanism of OH., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Ltd. Background: Acute lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs) account for >27% of all hospitalizations among US children under five years of age. Residential burning of biomass for heat leads to elevated indoor levels of fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) that often exceed current health based air quality standards. This is concerning as PM 2.5 exposure is associated with many adverse health outcomes, including a greater than three-fold increased risk of LRTIs. Evidence-based efforts are warranted in rural and American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) communities in the US that suffer from elevated rates of childhood LRTI and commonly use wood for residential heating., Design: In three rural and underserved settings, we conducted a three-arm randomized controlled, post-only intervention trial in wood stove homes with children less than five years old. Education and household training on best-burn practices were introduced as one intervention arm (Tx1). This intervention was evaluated against an indoor air filtration unit arm (Tx2), as well as a control arm (Tx3). The primary outcome was LRTI incidence among children under five years of age., Discussion: To date, exposure reduction strategies in wood stove homes have been either inconsistently effective or include factors that limit widespread dissemination and continued compliance in rural and economically disadvantaged populations.
