The present study was conducted to test the effects of KNO3, KH2PO4, and CaCl2 on shoot multiplication, root proliferation, and accumulation of phytochemicals in in vitro cultures of Oroxylum indicum. The results indicate that modifying the MS salt formulation in relation to particular inorganic nutrients highly affected shoot multiplication, root proliferation, and accumulation of flavonoids in in vitro cultures. A concentration of 0.60 g L−1 CaCl2 resulted in the highest frequency of shoot regeneration (5.6 shoots per explant). A concentration of 0.40 g L−1 CaCl2 resulted in the highest frequency of root regeneration (7.8 roots per shoot). Modifications of the concentrations of inorganic salts were also found to be advantageous for production media for both multiple shoots and shoot-derived root in vitro cultures. Multiple shoots generated on shoot induction medium with a concentration of 0.60 g L−1 CaCl2 and roots generated on root induction medium with a concentration of 1.5 g L−1 KNO3 yielded about a five times higher flavonoid level than cultures generated on control medium respectively. This study presents a method, called random forest based tensor regression, for real‐time head pose estimation using both depth and intensity data. The method builds on random forests and proposes to train and use tensor regressors at each leaf node of the trees of the forest. The tensor regressors are trained using both intensity and depth data and their votes are fused. The proposed method is shown to outperform current state of the art approaches in terms of accuracy when applied to the publicly available Biwi Kinect head pose dataset.

To understand the effect of aerosols on the growth and physiological conditions of trees in forests, it is important to know the state of aerosols that are deposited on the surface of the leaves or needles. In this study, we developed methods of visualization of submicron-sized aerosols that were artificially deposited from the gas-phase or liquid phase onto tree leaves or needles in trees. Firstly, we used field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) to observe black carbon (BC) particles that were artificially sprayed onto the leaves or needles. The distribution of BC particles deposited on the leaves and needles were distinguished based on the size and morphological features of the particles. The distribution and agglomerates size of BC particles differed between two spraying methods of BC particles employed. Secondly, we tried to visualize gold (Au) particles that were artificially sprayed onto the leaves using energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX) coupled to FE-SEM. We detected the Au particles based on the characteristic X-ray spectrum, which was secondarily generated from the Au particles. In contrast to the case of BC particles, the Au particles did not form agglomerates and were uniformly distributed on the leaf surfaces. The present results show that our methods provide useful information of adsorption and/or behavior of fine particles at the submicron level on the surface of the leaves.

The transition from the vegetative juvenile phase to the adult phase is a crucial event in the life cycle of flowering plants, with flowering being the most important milestone. While the regulatory pathways of flowering have been well established in model plants such as Arabidopsis and a few crops, the flowering regulation pathways in perennial forest trees remain poorly understood. This paper summarizes the regulation of flowering time by miR156 and miR172, which are the main members of the aging pathway, and also presents new information on the role of miR159 and miR169. These two microRNAs interact with miR156 and miR172 to jointly regulate flowering time in forest trees. Overall, this review sheds light on the complex regulatory mechanisms underlying flowering time in forest trees and provides insights into potential targets for manipulating the flowering time of these economically and ecologically important species., Competing Interests: The authors declare that they have no conflict of interest.

* Background and Aims Storms can cause huge damage to European forests. Even pole-stage trees with 80-cm rooting depth can topple. Therefore, good anchorage is needed for trees to survive and grow up from an early age. We hypothesized that root architecture is a predominant factor determining anchorage failure caused by strong winds. * Methods We sampled 48 seeded or planted Pinus pinaster trees of similar aerial size from four stands damaged by a major storm 3 years before. The trees were gathered into three classes: undamaged, leaning and heavily toppled. After uprooting and 3D digitizing of their full root architectures, we computed the mechanical characteristics of the main components of the root system from our morphological measurements. * Key Results Variability in root architecture was quite large. A large main taproot, either short and thick or long and thin, and guyed by a large volume of deep roots, was the major component that prevented stem leaning. Greater shallow root flexural stiffness mainly at the end of the zone of rapid taper on the windward side also prevented leaning. Toppling in less than 90-cm-deep soil was avoided in trees with a stocky taproots or with a very big leeward shallow root. Toppled trees also had a lower relative root biomass - stump excluded - than straight trees. * Conclusions It was mainly the flexural stiffness of the central part of the root system that secured anchorage, preventing a weak displacement of the stump. The distal part of the longest taproot and attached deep roots may be the only parts of the root system contributing to anchorage through their maximum tensile load. Several designs provided good anchorage, depending partly on available soil depth. Pole-stage trees are in-between the juvenile phase when they fail by toppling and the mature phase when they fail by uprooting. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
