Abstract Estimation of phytoplankton biomass (noted as phytoplankton carbon, C phyto) and evaluation of phytoplankton physiology is central to the estimation of primary productivity and the carbon cycle. This issue has been widely considered in oceans but not in inland water. Here, we develop experiential and semi-analytical models, which validated by independent in situ measurement data, respectively, to derive C phyto and phytoplankton absorption coefficient at 675 nm (a ph (675)) from MODIS. The effects of nutrients and temperature on the seasonal variation of phytoplankton physiology were assessed through a novel proxy of C phyto to a ph (675) ratio (C phyto / a ph (675)) over the Lake Taihu, the third largest lake in China. Significant seasonal climatological cycles of C phyto , a ph (675) and C phyto / a ph (675) were observed in Lake Taihu, especially in Meiliang Bay and Zhushan Bay, where algal blooms occur frequently. The highest C phyto and a ph (675) values were observed in summer due to the growth of phytoplankton biomass and chlorophyll-a concentration. Lower values were observed in winter and spring, which are characterized by relatively high total nitrogen levels and low irradiance, owing to the low temperature astricts the algae growth. However, the C phyto / a ph (675) shows an opposite trend compared to C phyto and a ph (675), which have high values in winter and low values in summer. The analysis of C phyto , a ph (675) and C phyto / a ph (675) with total phosphorus (TP) levels and temperature indicates that TP are the main positive driver of the increase in C phyto and a ph (675) and negatively regulate C phyto / a ph (675). Warming promotes an increase in C phyto and a ph (675) and restricts C phyto / a ph (675) in summer. Biomass and nutrient levels are the primary drivers of the decrease of C phyto / a ph (675) in such a typical eutrophic lake. The results present some new findings compared to previous oceanic studies and expand our knowledge in the study of phytoplankton biomass and physiology in eutrophic lakes. Abstract Tai Lake (Ch: Taihu) has attracted international attention forcyanobacteria blooms. However, the drivers of cultural eutrophication, especially long-term socio-economic indicators have been little researched. The results of research demonstrate how socio-economic development affected quality of water and how it has been improved by anthropogenic activities. This study described variability in indicators of water quality in Tai Lakeand investigated thedrivers. Significant relationships existed between concentrations of annual mean total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorous (TP), chemical oxygen demand (COD) and biological oxygen demand (BOD), and population, per capital gross domestic production (GDP) and sewage discharge (p < 0.05). However, mechanisms causing change varied among TN, TP, COD and BOD. Before 2000, the main contributors to increases in concentrations of TN were human population, GDP and volumes of domestic sewage discharges. After 2000, discharges of industrial sewage become the primary contributor. After 1998, the regressions of annual mean TN, TP and COD on per capital GDP, population and domestic sewage discharge were reversed compared to the former period. Since 1999, an apparent inverted U-shaped relationship between environmental pollution and economic development has developed, which indicated that actions taken by governments have markedly improved quality of water in Tai Lake. The statistical relationship between BOD and per capital GDP didn't conform to the Kuznet curve. The U-shaped Kuznet curve may offer hope for the future that with significant environmental investments a high GDP can be reached and maintained without degradation of the environment, especially through appropriate management of industrial sewage discharge. Abstract Iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) reactions have been regarded as the primary factors responsible for the mobilization of phosphorus (P) in lake sediments, although their individual roles are hard to distinguish. In this study, in situ mobilization of P, Fe and Mn in sediments was assessed by high resolution spatio-temporal sampling of their labile forms using diffusive gradient in thin films (DGT) and suction device (Rhizon) techniques. It was found that the monthly concentration distributions showed greater agreement and better correlation coefficients between labile P and labile Fe, than those between labile P and labile Mn, implying that Fe plays a key role in controlling P release in sediments. Furthermore, better correlations were observed between hourly changes in concentrations of soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) and soluble Fe(II), than those between SRP and soluble Mn. Changes were observed under simulated anaerobic incubation conditions, suggesting that P release was caused by the reductive dissolution of Fe oxides. This was supported by the lack of influences on P release from reductive dissolution of Mn oxides in the sediment-water interface and top sediment layers under the anaerobic incubations. In simulated algal bloom experiments, positive correlations and consistent changes were observed between SRP and soluble Fe(II) concentrations, but not between SRP and soluble Mn concentrations. This further demonstrated the Fe-dependent and Mn-independent release of P in sediments. Therefore, Fe redox reactions have a high impact on P mobilization in sediments, while Mn redox reactions appear to have negligible influences. Mollusks represent one of the most important components of freshwater zoobenthos and their shells provide a substrate for many organisms creating epibiotic communities of predominantly facultative nature. We determined rotifer species that colonize shells of Dreissena polymorpha (Pallas, 1771) without and with presence of large Cladocera and fish, alone and together. The experiment was conducted in 12 mesocosms filled with water from the littoral zone of a eutrophic lake. The experiment involved four treatments (three replicates each): (1) control of D. polymorpha in lake water; (2) D. polymorpha in lake water with the addition of large Cladocera; (3) D. polymorpha in lake water with the addition of fish; and (4) D. polymorpha in lake water with the addition of large Cladocera plus fish. The study revealed that epizoic rotifer fauna found on D. polymorpha is relatively abundant and rich in species, different from plankton communities in the same mesocosms, and specific, that is, include species that prefer this habitat. It may also suggest that communities of epizoic rotifers are impacted by the presences of benthic predators, as well as by small fish and large crustaceans inhabiting littoral waters. Iron reduction mediated by Fe(III)-reducing bacteria (FeRB) occurs in aqueous environments and plays an essential role in removing contaminates in polluted freshwater lakes. Two model FeRB species, Shewanella and Geobacter, have been intensively studied because of their functions in bioremediation, iron reduction, and bioelectricity production. However, the abundance and community diversity of Shewanella and Geobacter in eutrophic freshwater lakes remain largely unknown. In this work, the distribution, abundance and biodiversity of Shewanella, Geobacter and other FeRB in the sediments of a heavily polluted lake, Chaohu Lake, China, across four successive seasons were investigated. Shewanella, Geobacter, and other FeRB were found to be widely distributed in the sediment of this heavily eutrophic lake. Geobacter was abundant with at least one order of magnitude more than Shewanella in cold seasons. Three Shewanella-related operational taxonomic units were detected and sixty one Geobacter-related operational taxonomic units were grouped into three phylogenetic clades. Thiobacillus, Desulfuromonas and Geobacter were identified as the main members of FeRB in the lake sediments. Interestingly, nutrients like carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus were found to be the key factors governing the abundance and diversity of FeRB. Total FeRB, as well as Geobacter and Shewanella, were more abundant in the heavily eutrophic zone than those in the lightly eutrophic zone. The abundance and diversity of FeRB in the sediments of freshwater lakes were highly related with the degree of eutrophication, which imply that FeRB might have a great potential in alleviating the eutrophication and contamination in aqueous environments. Few studies have focused on the biomechanical responses of submerged, rosette-forming macrophytes to wave action, water depth, or their co-occurrence in naturally eutrophic systems. The plant architecture, root anchorage strength-related traits, leaf morphology, and biomechanics of Vallisneria natans inhabiting a range of water depths were examined along three transects (T1, T2, and T3) in a eutrophic lake, Lake Erhai, in Yunnan Province, China. These transects were exposed to weak wave action and hyper-eutrophication (T1), moderate wave action and eutrophication (T2), or strong wave action and eutrophication (T3). The results showed that V. natans was mainly distributed at intermediate depths, with the widest colonization depth in T1. The values of plant architecture, root anchorage strength-related traits, leaf morphology, and biomechanics were generally highest in T3 and smallest in T2. Along the depth gradient, these values were generally highest at 3.5, 2.5, and 2.5 m for the plants growing in T1, T2, and T3, respectively. These findings suggest that V. natans adopts a “tolerance” strategy to cope with the effects of strong wave action in eutrophic habitats and an “avoidance” strategy when exposed to moderate wave action in eutrophic areas. Since the absence of an avoidance strategy increases the resistance to low-light stress at the expense of increased drag forces, there is a limit to the wave action that V. natans can withstand. • Denitrification and DNRA rates were modulated mainly by their gene abundances, followed by the environmental factors. • Denitrification rates significantly increased as further eutrophication, but DNRA rates were not. • Pseudomonas and Anaeromyxobacter was the dominant genus mediated denitrification and DNRA, respectively. Traditional views indicate that eutrophication and subsequent algal blooms favor denitrification and dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA) in lake ecosystems. However, lakes tend to show an increasing propensity for inorganic nitrogen (N) limitation as they become more eutrophic. Thus, the influence of further eutrophication on denitrification and DNRA in eutrophic lakes are unclear due to the uncertainty of N availability. To fill this gap, we investigated the genes abundance (AOA, AOB, nirS, nirK and nrfA) and the composition of N-cycling microbes through quantitative PCR and 16S rRNA sequencing analysis, respectively, in 15 shallow eutrophic lakes of the Yangtze-Huaihe River basin, China. The results indicated that denitrification and DNRA rates could be modulated mainly by their functional gene abundances (nirS, nirK and nrfA), followed by the environmental factors (sediment total organic carbon and nitrogen). Denitrification rates significantly increased from slightly to highly eutrophic lakes, but DNRA rates were not. An explanation is that nitrification provided ample nitrate for denitrification, and this cooperative interaction was indicated by the positive correlation of their gene abundances. In addition, Pseudomonas and Anaeromyxobacter was the dominant genus mediated denitrification and DNRA, showing the potential to perform facultative anaerobic and strict anaerobic nitrate reduction, respectively. High level of dissolved oxygen might favor the facultatively aerobic denitrifiers over the obligately anaerobic fermentative DNRA bacteria in these shallow lakes. Chlorophyll a had a weak but positive effect on the gene abundances for nitrification (AOA and AOB). Eutrophication of lacustrine environments with frequent cyanobacterial blooms has become a serious problem. Overpopulation and runoff into groundwater and lakes from fertilizers with too much nitrogen and phosphorous have caused most of the problems. Here, we first devised a land use and cover classification system based on the local characteristics of the first-level protected area of Lake Chaohu (FPALC). Lake Chaohu is the fifth largest freshwater lake in China. The land use and cover change (LUCC) products were produced using sub-meter resolution satellite data from 2019 to 2021 in the FPALC. This study presents an evaluation of the effectiveness of the established protected areas. The results show the most impactful type was the reduction in cropland with an area that declined from 7446.4 hm2 to 6433.3 hm2 from 2019 to 2021. Most of the reduced cropland was converted into wetlands, with 460.2 hm2 and 152.0 hm2 of cropland restored to wetlands from 2019 to 2020 and 2020–2021, respectively. The area of cyanobacterial blooms in Lake Chaohu showed a downward trend, and the lacustrine environment was greatly improved after the establishment of the FPALC. These quantified data can inform decision-making related to Lake Chaohu conservation and provide a reference for managing the aquatic environment in other watersheds. Shallow eutrophic lakes with submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) are a large source of atmospheric methane (CH 4) emissions. However, current estimates of CH 4 emissions from lakes are uncertain owing to the lack of data on the diel and monthly variability of CH 4 emissions. In this study, we conducted monthly diel measurements in Ulansuhai Lake, China during the ice-free period (April to October, 2019) to determine the diel and monthly variability of CH 4 emissions. The diffusive CH 4 emission flux (FCH 4d) from June to September was significantly higher (∼5- to 10-fold) than that from April, May, and October, accounting for > 92% of the total emissions. Daytime measurements would overestimate emissions if extrapolated to the whole day because FCH 4d during daytime was higher than that during nighttime. Mean daily FCH 4d emission estimates are overestimated by 25%, ranging from 11% in summer to 46% in spring based solely on daytime measurement. The sampling sites were net sources of CH 4 emissions, with total FCH 4 of 9.74 ± 9.06 mmol m−2 d−1. FCH 4d increased sharply when the water temperature was above 20 °C. FCH 4 (CO 2 eq) accounted for over 90% of the total greenhouse gas emissions (CH 4 plus CO 2), with the majority occurring from June to September. Lakes along with their surroundings are an attractive landscape component that play an important role in recreation and relaxation. In Poland, the Great Masurian Lakeland, visited by a million tourists every year, is considered to be the most attractive lake area. However, tourist pressure has several negative effects which cause degradation of the water environment. The aim of this study was to determine the trophic state of Lake Mikołajskie which is a hub for sailing and motorboating traffic. Values of the trophic status index were calculated from the content of total phosphorus, chlorophyll a and Secchi disc visibility, according to the data from the Voivodeship Inspectorate for Environmental Protection. In summer, the concentration of total phosphorus was 0.019–0.042 mg dm−3 in 2013 and 0.022–0.055 mg dm−3 in 2014. The concentration of chlorophyll a was in the range of 8.3–45.0 μg dm−3 in 2013 and 8.9–22.0 μg dm−3 in 2014. The maximum visibility of Secchi disc reached 2.0 m (2013) and 1.8 m (2014). Based on the calculated, Lake Mikołajskie can be classified as a eutrophic lake. In order to protect lakes from degradation tourists should be educated about the rational use of surface waters and the surrounding catchment. However, it is not only the massive influx of tourists, but also the activity of residents (dictated by economic reasons) that contribute to the pollution of lakes. Therefore, the development of tourism and the economy of the whole region should be harmonious and balanced so that the natural resources can serve us and future generations for as long as possible.

Submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) is an important part of lake ecosystems, and a proper SAV community structure is the key factor in keeping a clear-water state. Although the response of SAV to water depth has been widely studied in different aquatic environments, little is known about the response of the SAV community to changes in water depth of a large lake after an extreme rainfall event. To examine this question, 780 samples were collected from Lake Taihu, China, between 2013 and 2017 to analyze the variations in SAV and water depth. The water level of the lake ranged from 2.75 to 4.87 m, and the water depth at sampling sites ranged from 1.07 to 3.31 m. The SAV biomass at the sampling sites ranged from 0 to 17.61 kg/m2. The influence of water depth on SAV biomass and frequency of occurrence differed by seasons and by species. The adaptation of SAV species to increasing water depth is a key element for community dynamics, which in turn contributes to water level regulation. A new method was proposed to identify the optimal water depth for SAV biomass accumulation based on calculation of the cumulative probability and probability density.

Eutrophication can stimulate the emissions of volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) accompanied by variations in environmental variables in lakes. However, the effects of eutrophication on VSC emissions from lake sediments as well as the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, depth gradient sediments at different eutrophication levels and seasons were collected from Lake Taihu to investigate the response of sulfur biotransformation in the sediments to eutrophication based on the analysis of environmental variables, microbial activity, abundance and community structure. H 2 S and CS 2 were the main VSCs produced from the lake sediments, with the production rates of 2.3-7.9 and 1.2-3.9 ng g -1  h -1 in August, respectively, which were higher than those in March, mainly due to the increasing activity and abundance of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) at high temperatures. The VSC production rates from the sediments increased with lake eutrophication level. Higher VSC production rates were detected in surface sediments in eutrophic regions but in deep sediments in oligotrophic regions. Sulfuricurvum, Thiobacillus and Sulfuricella were the main sulfur-oxidizing bacteria (SOB) in the sediments, while Desulfatiglans and Desulfobacca were the predominant SRB. Organic matter, Fe 3+ , NO 3 - -N and total sulfur had significant influences on the microbial communities in the sediments. Partial least squares path modelling showed that the trophic level index could stimulate VSC emissions from lake sediments by influencing the activities and abundances of SOB and SRB. Knowing the microbial compositions in fresh lakes is significant to explore the mechanisms of eutrophication and algal blooms. This study reported on the bacterial communities of the four adjacent fresh lakes at different trophic status by Illumina MiSeq Platform, which were Tangxun Lake (J1), Qingling Lake (J2), Huangjia Lake (J3) and Niushan Lake (J4) in Wuhan, China. J1 had the highest salinity and phosphorus. J2 was abundant in TC (Total Carbon)/TOC (Total Organic Carbon.), calcium and magnesium. J3 had the highest content of nitrogen, iron and pollution of heavy metals. High-throughput sequencing analysis of the 16S rRNA gene revealed that the eutrophic lakes (J1, J2 and J3) were dominated by Cyanobacteria (46.1% for J1, 40.8% for J2, 33.4% for J3) and the oligotrophic lake (J4) was dominated by Actinobacteria (34.2%). An increase of Cyanobacteria could inhibit the growth of Proteobacteria , Actinobacteria and Bacteroidetes . Functional inferences from 16S rRNA sequences suggested that J4 had more abundant bacteria with regard to substrate metabolism than J1, J2, and J3. Burkholderia and Fluviicola might be a suggestion of good water quality. The results demonstrated that the bacterial community could well reflect the water quality of the four lakes. Sediments of Lake Kojle, located in the transition zone between the nemoral and boreal biogeographic zones in NE Poland, were analysed to verify the response of the aquatic ecosystem to major environmental changes. High-resolution plant macrofossil, mollusc and pollen data were derived from two replicate parallel cores and revealed several shifts in the biota composition within the littoral zone between 250 BCE and 1550 CE. The reaction of the aquatic ecosystem to temperature changes was found to be minor, which is ascribed to the mitigating influence of water and the wide ecological tolerance of most of the taxa. Najas marina , considered as an indicator of warmer conditions, was the only species that clearly reacted to the long-term climate shifts. We consider lake level changes that resulted from fluctuations in climate humidity and the filling of the lake with sediments as the most important factors that control the presence of macrophytes species from the genera Nymphaea , Nuphar , Typha , and Chara . Mollusc diversity and abundance increased with the increase in the diversity and biomass of submerged vegetation. However, reduced dissolved oxygen within the water column under the floating leaves of Nymphaea alba and Nuphar sp. resulted in the retreat of Planorbis carinatus , a gastropod species sensitive to oxygen shortages. Major shifts in the developments of fauna and flora were parallel in the two studied cores, but some spatial variability was observed. Submerged macrophytes growing in clear- and turbid water may develop morphological differences as adaptations to difference light levels. Plant forms altered over generations and longtime are regarded as ecotypes and the changes are assumed to be persistent, even if the plants are returned to their ancestral environment. Specimens of Potamogeton malaianus from clear and turbid water zones of Lake Taihu were compared in their native settings and after transplanting to similar and different environments. Results showed that turbid water forms of P. malaianus had significantly larger shoots with more and longer leaves and more biomass concentrated near the water surface. After transplanting into clear water, the daughter shoots arising from clear or turbid water plants showed no significant differences from their mother shoots, but showed significant differences from each other. After transplanting into turbid water, mother and daughter shoots originating from turbid water plants had similar morphologies, but were significantly different from clear water plants. Plants transplanted from clear water did not survive in turbid water. Our results suggest that P. malaianus forms special ecotype in turbid water, which may help plants maximize their sunlight-harvesting potential and thus might contribute to an observed expansion of the species into turbid water areas of eutrophic lakes. Eutrophication and hydrodynamics determine the final distribution patterns of aquatic macrophytes; however, there is limited available knowledge regarding their interactive effects. Morphological and biomechanical responses to eutrophication and hydrodynamic stresses were assessed by sampling five abundant and dominant species, Potamogeton maackianus , P. pectinatus , P. lucens , Ceratophyllum demersum and Myriophyllum spicatum , in three macrophyte beds in Lake Erhai, Yunnan Province, China: one exposed to eutrophication and moderate southeast (SE) wind; one with mesotrophication, but sheltered by the lakeshore, with weak wind disturbance; and one with meso-eutrophication and strong SE wind. The results showed significant interactive effects of eutrophication and hydrodynamics on most biomechanical traits and some morphological traits, suggesting that aquatic macrophytes preferentially undergo biomechanical adjustments to resist the coexisting eutrophication and hydrodynamic stresses. In particular, hydrodynamics increased both the tensile force and tensile strain of P. maackianus under meso-eutrophication and dramatically decreased them in eutrophic areas, suggesting that eutrophication triggers mechanical failure in this species. Additionally, P. pectinatus , C. demersum and M. spicatum showed the lowest and highest values for the biomechanical variables (greater values for M. spicatum ) in the most eutrophic and hydrodynamic areas, respectively, implying that increases in hydrodynamics primarily induce mechanical damage in eutrophic species. The plants generally exhibited greater tensile strain in both shallow and deep waters and the greatest tensile force at moderate depths. The stem cross-sectional area, plant height, stem length, internode length, and branch traits were all responsible for determining the biomechanical variables. This study reveals that hydrodynamic changes primarily induce mechanical damage in eutrophic species, whereas eutrophication triggers mechanical damage in sensitive species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cyanobacterial blooms occur in eutrophic lakes worldwide, and greatly impair these ecosystems. To explore influences of cyanobacterial blooms on dynamics of both particulate organic matter (POM) and dissolved organic matter (DOM), which are at the base of the food chain, an investigation was conducted from December 2014 to November 2015 that included various stages of the seasonal cyanobacterial blooms (dominated by Microcystis) in a large-shallow eutrophic Chinese lake (Taihu Lake). Data from eight sites of the lake are compiled into a representative seasonal cycle to assess general patterns of POM and DOM dynamics. Compared to December, 5-fold and 3.5-fold increases were observed in July for particulate organic carbon (POC, 3.05–15.37 mg/L) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC, 5.48–19.25 mg/L), respectively, with chlorophyll a (Chl a) concentrations varying from 8.2 to 97.7 μg/L. Approximately 40% to 76% of total organic carbon was partitioned into DOC. All C, N, and P in POM and DOC were significantly correlated with Chl a. POC:Chl a ratios were low, whereas proportions of the estimated phytoplankton-derived organic matter in total POM were high during bloom seasons. These results suggested that contributions of cyanobacterial blooms to POM and DOC varied seasonally. Seasonal average C:P ratios in POM and DOM varied from 79 to 187 and 299 to 2 175, respectively. Both peaked in July and then sharply decreased. Redundancy analysis revealed that Chl a explained most of the variations of C:N:P ratios in POM, whereas temperature was the most explanatory factor for DOM. The biological pump plays a critical role in the occurrence and fate of hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs) mostly in temperate and frigid oligotrophic waters. However, the factors for the long-term occurrence and fate of HOCs in subtropical eutrophic waters remain largely unknown. This study provides novel insights into biogeochemical and physical factors on the annual occurrence, bioaccumulation, and biomagnification of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the plankton food webs of four Chinese subtropical eutrophic lakes by one-year simultaneous field observations for five compartments. The annual mean ΣPAH 16 in the water columns ranged from 359.69 ± 31.52 ng L −1 to 682.69 ± 65.41 ng L −1 , and increased with the annual mean trophic state index, and phytoplankton biomass of these lakes, but was independent on the proximity of the lakes to urban areas. Biodilution effect played an important role in the occurrence of the PAHs in both phytoplankton and zooplankton. In contrast to previous studies in oligotrophic waters, not only the biological pump but also the equilibrium partitioning and the indirect influence of eutrophication (high pH induced by phytoplankton, and phytoplankton life cycling) modulated the annual occurrence of the PAHs in the water columns of these eutrophic lakes. Biphasic correlations were found between the bioaccumulation factors of the PAHs by plankton and the temperature (n = 97–136, R 2  = 0.06–0.24, p  ≤ .008), and were related to plankton phenology. Bioaccumulation factors by plankton were dependent on the hydrophobicity of the PAHs (n = 16, R 2  = 0.27–0.31, p  ≤ .023), and decreased with plankton biomass (n = 94–103, R 2  = 0.09–0.27, p  ≤ .010). Trophic transfer of the PAHs from phytoplankton to zooplankton increased with phytoplankton biomass (n = 26, R 2  = 0.27, p  = .004), and the temperature (n = 102–135, R 2  = 0.06–0.13, p  ≤ .004), but decreased with lake trophic state index. Massive partial sequencing of 16S rRNA genes has become the predominant tool used for studying microbial ecology. However, determining which hypervariable regions and primer sets should be used for screening microbial communities requires extensive investigation if controversial results are to be avoided. Here, the performances of different variable regions of the 16S rRNA gene on bacterial diversity studies were evaluated in silico with respect to the SILVA non-redundant reference database (SILVA SSU Ref 123NR), and subsequently verified using samples from Lake Taihu in China, a eutrophic lake. We found that the bacterial community composition results were strongly impacted by the different V regions. The results show that V1–V2 and V1–V3 regions were the most reliable regions in the full-length 16S rRNA sequences, while most V3 to V6 regions (including V3, V4, V3–V4, V5, V4–V5, V6, V3–V6, V4-V6, and V5–V6) were more closely aligned with the SILVA SSU Ref 123NR database. Overall, V4 was the most prominent V region for achieving good domain specificity, higher coverage and a broader spectrum in the Bacteria domain, as confirmed by the validation experiments. • High frequency monitoring of phytoplankton and bacterioplankton dynamics in an eutrophic shallow lake. • Phytoplankton and associated bacterioplankton communities can be seen as a couple in interaction but with flexible species variations. • Free-living bacterioplankton is under less direct influence of the phytoplankton communities and environmental variables dynamics. Bloom-forming phytoplankton dynamics are still unpredictable, even though it is known that several abiotic factors, such as nutrient availability and temperature, are key factors for bloom development. We investigated whether biotic factors, i.e. the bacterioplankton composition (via 16SrDNA metabarcoding), were correlated with phytoplankton dynamics, through a weekly monitoring of a shallow lake known to host recurrent cyanobacterial blooms. We detected concomitant changes in both bacterial and phytoplankton community biomass and diversity. During the bloom event, a significant decrease in phytoplankton diversity, was detected, with a first co-dominance of Ceratium, Microcystis and Aphanizomenon , followed by a co-dominance of the two cyanobacterial genera. In the same time, we observed a decrease of the particle-associated (PA) bacterial richness and the emergence of a specific bacterial consortium that was potentially better adapted to the new nutritional niche. Unexpectedly, changes in PA bacterial communities occurred just before the development the emergence of the phytoplanktonic bloom and the associated modification of the phytoplanktonic community composition, suggesting that changes in environmental conditions leading to the bloom, were first sensed by the bacterial PA community. This last was quite stable throughout the bloom event, even though there were changes in the blooming species, suggesting that the association between cyanobacterial species and bacterial communities may not be as tight as previously described for monospecific blooming communities. Finally, the dynamics of the free-living (FL) bacterial communities displayed a different trajectory from those of the PA and phytoplankton communities. This FL communities can be viewed as a reservoir for bacterial recruitment for the PA fraction. Altogether, these data also highlight s that the spatial organization within these different microenvironments in the water column is a relevant factor in the structuring of these communities. The geochemical study of iron isotopes is of great significance to comprehensively understand the surface material circulation process and its environmental effects in surface and subsurface environments. Eutrophic lakes are an important part of the surface and subsurface environment; however, knowledge of the geochemical behaviour and fractionation mechanism of iron isotopes in the biogeochemical cycling of eutrophic lakes is still scarce. In this study, a eutrophic lake with seasonal anaerobic characteristics (Hongfeng Lake) was selected as the study object to systematically analyse the iron isotope composition of suspended particles in lake water and the main tributaries in different seasons. The results show that the value of δ56Fe in Hongfeng Lake is between −0.85‰ and +0.14‰, and the value of δ56Fe has a high linear correlation with Fe/Al, indicating that the continental source material carried by the main inflow tributaries of the lake has an important influence on the source of iron in the lake. And Hongfeng Lake is moderately eutrophic lakes. Algal bloom and the content of chlorophyll a (Chl-a) are high, combined with the high correlation between Chl-a and the value of δ56Fe, which indicates that the growth of algae has an important influence on the change in the iron isotope composition of suspended particulate matter (SPM) in lake water and that the adsorption and growth absorption of Fe by algae are the main reason for the change in the value of δ56Fe; therefore, Fe isotope can be used to trace the lake’s biological action. For the lake and its inflow tributaries, δ56Fe values are higher in summer than in winter. The variation in the δ56Fe value of SPM with lake depth is more distinct in summer than in winter. In addition, there is a distinct thermocline in summer, which leads to hydrochemical stratification. Moreover, according to a linear correlation analysis, the content of dissolved organic matter (DOC) in Hongfeng Lake’s upper and lower water bodies, respectively, has a high correlation with the value of δ56Fe. Specifically, the correlation is positive in the upper water but negative in the lower water, which indicates that the difference in algae metabolism patterns between the upper and lower water bodies of Hongfeng Lake plays an important role in the iron isotope composition of SPM. The composition of the iron isotope in SPM is altered by organic adsorption and growth absorption of algae in the upper water. With an increase in depth, degradation becomes the main process. In addition, the value of δ56Fe is low and that of Fe/Al is high in the water bottom, which indicates that a “ferrous-wheel„ cycle forms at the bottom of the water.

Phytoplankton is the main source of energy and material for bacterioplankton in eutrophic lakes, but little is known about the species-specific relationships between dominant phytoplankton and bacterioplankton. In this study, we examined the response of the bacterioplankton community composition (BCC) to phytoplankton succession at genus-level resolution in a eutrophic lake, Lake Taihu. BCC was analyzed using 16S rRNA gene terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism and high-throughput 454 pyrosequencing for selected samples collected monthly from January to December of 2009. Microcystis, Phormidium, Synedra and Asterionella dominated the phytoplankton community from January to March; then, Microcystis became the sole dominant genus, and a phytoplankton bloom occurred from June to October. Canonical correspondence analysis showed that phytoplankton abundance played a key role in shaping the variance of the BCC. The abundance of Microcystis was negatively correlated with the abundance of Micrococcineae and Burkholderiales but was positively correlated with that of Actinomycetales; the abundance of Synedra had a positive correlation with two operational taxonomic units (OTUs) of Actinomycetales as well as Planctomycetales, Rhodobacterales, Sphingomonadales, and Xanthomonadales, four OTUs that are affiliated with Burkholderiales. In situ measured values of particulate organic carbon (POC) in Taihu Lake and remote sensing reflectance observed by three satellite courses from 2014 to 2015 were used to develop an near infrared-red (NIR-Red) empirical algorithm of POC for the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS-Aqua) satellite image. The performance of the POC algorithm is highly consistent with the in situ measured POC, with root mean square error percentage (RMSPs) of 38.9% and 31.5% for two independent validations, respectively. The MODIS-derived POC also shows an acceptable result, with RMSPs of 53.6% and 61.0% for two periods of match-up data. POC from 2005 to 2007 is much higher than it is from 2002 to 2004 and 2008 to 2013, due to a large area of algal bloom. Riverine flux is an important source of POC in Taihu Lake, especially in the lake's bank and bays. The influence of a terrigenous source of POC can reach the center lake during periods of heavy precipitation. Sediment resuspension is also a source of POC in the lake due to the area's high dynamic ratio (25.4) and wind speed. The source of POC in an inland shallow lake is particularly complex, and additional research on POC is needed to more clearly reveal its variation in inland water. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Lake Peipsi sensu lato consists of limnologically and hydrochemically different parts, Lake Peipsi sensu stricto, Lake Lämmijärv, and Lake Pihkva. The eutrophic L. Peipsi s.s. and the hypertrophic Lake Pihkva were studied. The aim was to find out if the ecological state of these lake parts has improved, stabilized or deteriorated during a ten-year period, 2003-2012. For this purpose, data on loadings, in-lake nutrient concentrations, water transparency, water level, chlorophyll a concentration, as well as phyto- and zooplankton were compared for two five-year sub-periods (2003-2007 and 2008-2012). Comparison demonstrated a decline in the loading of total phosphorus (TP) from rivers on the Estonian and Russian sides as well as in its mean concentration in both lake parts. Both phytoplankton biomass and cyanobacterial biomass decreased in response to the reduced nutrient content in the lake water. The responses of zooplankton were contradictory. Changes in the occurrence of indicator species and declining mean zooplankter weight reflected a continuous eutrophication process while changes in the abundance of rotifers and the genus Daphnia indicated a subtle shift towards recovery. The role of fragments in restoring eutrophic lakes remains unclear despite the importance of re-establishing submerged macrophytes via fragments. This study established a manipulative experiment using different biomass fragments of Potamogeton crispus . This approach was adapted to study the reproductive capacity, nutrient removal efficiency, and algae inhibitory effect of fragments. Results showed that fragments could grow throughout a 49-day experiment by maintaining the stable photosynthesis efficiency of leaves and lengthening the stems. These floating fragments could regenerate by producing turions for the maintenance of their species. Moreover, the increasing removal efficiency of TP, TN, NH 4 + -N, and NO 3 − -N in water with the increase of fragment biomass indicates that the fragments could effectively purify water quality. Floating fragments competed with algae for nutrients, occupied a favorable ecological niche, and reduced algae biomass. They altered the structure of algae community and shifted the dominated green algae to cyanobacteria, the green algae of phytoplankton, and benthic algae. With the increasing problem of eutrophication, lacustrine ecosystem can undergo complex changes, often resulting in a shift from a clear macrophyte-dominated state to a turbid phytoplankton-dominated state. However, it's not clear how lake transitions occur at regional and global scales. This is due to a lack of long-term monitoring and an effective algorithm that can distinguish floating/emergent aquatic vegetation (FEAV), submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) and algal bloom (AB). This paper presents a novel three-step classification algorithm based on Landsat imagery, (ie., vegetation and bloom indices (VBI) algorithm): (1) to distinguish between aquatic vegetation (AV) and non-aquatic vegetation (non-AV) extents by an aquatic vegetation index (AVI) derived from tasseled cap transformation; (2) to identify FEAV and SAV within AV extent by using the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), and (3) to extract AB from non-AV extent with floating algae index (FAI). The performance of the VBI algorithm was validated using 1307 field samples collected across 22 lakes in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River (MLY) in China, with a pooled overall accuracy of 84.49%. Finally, the VBI algorithm was applied to Landsat data from 1985 to 2021 to quantify the temporal changes of FEAV, SAV and AB in large lakes (i.e., > 50 km2) along the MLY. Within these lakes, AV showed a significant decrease over the past 37 years, mainly due to the decrease of SAV; while AB occurred with higher frequency and in more lakes. The transition from a macrophyte-dominated state to a phytoplankton-dominated aquatic systems is still ongoing in the MLY area. This study in Lake Datong, China, investigates the remediation mechanism of multiple remediation technique combinations (dredging, adsorbent amendment, and planting aquatic vegetation) on sediment N and P loads based on two high-resolution sampling techniques (HR-Peeper and DGT) and P sequential extraction procedures. The results showed that high temperature and low dissolved oxygen considerably enhanced pore water dissolved reactive P (DRP) and NH 4 + concentrations attributable to abundant Fe-P and organic matter content in the sediment. Fe reduction is critical for regulating pore water DRP release and promoting N removal. Overall, for Lake Datong, combining multiple remediation techniques is more effective in controlling sediment P loads (pore water DRP, P fluxes, forms of P, and labile P), from a long-term perspective, than a single remediation. Lanthanum-modified bentonite (LMB) inactivation treatment can transfer mobile P in the surface sediment into more refractory forms over time, thereby reducing the risk of sediment labile P release. However, it is difficult to effectively remediate internal P loads owing to inappropriate dredging depths and low biomass of aquatic vegetation. Future lake restoration practices should optimize the selection of different remediation technique combinations based on internal N and P pollution characteristics, while reducing external wastewater input. These results are important for understanding the remediation mechanisms of internal N and P and provide suggestions for sediment management of shallow eutrophic lakes. Surface sediment in eutrophic lakes is both a destination and a habitat for overwintering cyanobacteria. The resuspension and recovery of viable, overwintering cyanobacteria from the surface sediment during warm spring weather is usually the primary stage of cyanobacterial blooms (CBs) in shallow eutrophic lakes. Therefore, the elimination of overwintering cyanobacteria in sediment is vital to control CBs. In the present study, sediment plow-tillage (PT) was introduced as an innovative technique for eliminating overwintering cyanobacteria in sediments from Lake Chaohu. Four depths of PT (2, 5, 10, and 15 cm) were tested during the 42-day experiment. The results showed that rapid cell death during the first 0–7 d after PT was accompanied by high oxygen uptake rates. The viable cells in deeper sediment died more quickly and at a higher rate after PT. A PT depth of >10 cm effectively eliminated viable cyanobacteria (with a removal rate of 82.8%) from the sediment and prevented their resuspension. The activity of the viable cyanobacteria also decreased quickly as cyanobacteria were eliminated. It appears that the dark, anoxic environment of the deeper sediment after PT was responsible for the elimination of viable cells. Although high release rates of nitrogen and phosphorus were found to accompany the dying and decomposition of cyanobacteria during days 0–7 of the experiment, greater depth of PT was found to decrease nutrient concentrations in the overlying water. In conclusion, we recommend sediment PT as a new technique for eliminating overwintering algae in sediments. Shallow lakes are highly vulnerable to damages caused by human activities and warming trends. To assess whether and how community structures of phytoplankton and nitrogen uptake respond to the combined effects of elevated temperature and eutrophication, we performed a mesocosm experiment in field by combining a 4.5 °C increase in temperature and the addition of phosphorus. Our results demonstrated that the combination of rising temperatures and phosphorus loading stimulated the maximum biomass built up by the phytoplankton community, and changed the phytoplankton community by significantly increasing the number of Chlorophyta and Cyanophyta, and decreasing that of Cryptophyta. We also examined the effects of climate warming and eutrophication on phytoplankton nitrogen uptake and dynamics using 15N tracer techniques. The addition of phosphorus slightly increased the phytoplankton nitrate uptake velocity and relative preference index, but decreased the nitrate uptake turnover time. Warming relatively increased the ammonium uptake velocity and the relative preference index, but decreased the ammonium turnover time. In kinetic studies, NH4+ exhibited a higher maximum uptake rate (Vmax) and a lower half-saturation constant (Ks) than NO3− substrates due to temperature elevation and the addition of phosphorus. Hence, warming and eutrophication increased the capacity of phytoplankton for NH4+ uptake and their affinity at low substrate concentrations. Thus, the combined effects of climate warming and phosphorus nutrient availability may increase the prevalence of Chlorophyta and Cyanophyta, and change the nitrogen cycling of aquatic ecosystems.

Chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) is a key component with a critical role in the littoral zones of eutrophic shallow lakes; yet the characteristics of CDOM in these zones remain seldom systematically reported. In this study, the differences in sources, biogeochemical characteristics, and fates of CDOM between the littoral zones of eutrophic lakes Taihu (LLT; frequently occurring algal blooms and longer lake residence time) and Hongze (LLH; no obvious algal blooms and shorter residence time) were compared during the algal bloom season using ultraviolet-visible spectra and excitation and emission matrix spectroscopy combined with parallel factor analysis. Three humic-like fluorescent dissolved organic matter (FDOM) components (C1, C3, and C4) and one protein-like component (C2) were identified. Results showed that FDOM components were dominated by protein-like fluorescent substances in LLT, and humic-like materials in LLH, respectively. The CDOM in LLT had a lower relative aromaticity and molecular weight, humification degree and a higher autotrophic productivity because of algal blooms. Furthermore, CDOM depletion rates in LLT were higher than those in LLH due to a longer lake residence time in LLT. In addition, CDOM shifted from high molecular weight to low molecular weight as the humification degree decreased during the CDOM depletion process. This comparative study showed that algal blooms and lake residence time were the significant factors for distinguishing characteristics of CDOM between littoral zones of shallow lakes on a similar trophic level. This study provides field-based knowledge for remote sensing CDOM measurement and serves as a reference for lakeshore aquatic environmental management.

Lake Paranoá is a tropical reservoir for the City of Brasilia, which became eutrophic due to inadequate sewage treatment associated with intensive population growth. At present, two wastewater treatment plants are capable of processing up to 95% of the domestic sewage, thereby successfully reducing eutrophization. We evaluated both genotoxic and cytotoxic parameters in several fish species ( Geophagus brasiliensis , Cichla temensis , Hoplias malabaricus , Astyanax bimaculatus lacustres , Oreochromis niloticus , Cyprinus carpio and Steindachnerina insculpita ) by using the micronucleus (MN) test, the comet assay and nuclear abnormality assessment in peripheral erythrocytes. The highest frequencies of MN were found in Cichla temensis and Hoplias malabaricus , which were statistically significant when compared to the other species. However, Steindachnerina insculpita (a detritivorous and lake-floor feeder species) showed the highest index of DNA damage in the comet assay, followed by C. temensis (piscivorous). Nuclear abnormalities, such as binucleated, blebbed, lobed and notched cells, were used as evidence of cytotoxicity. Oreochromis niloticus followed by Hoplias malaricus , ominivorous/detritivotous and piscivorous species, respectively, presented the highest frequency of nuclear abnormalities, especially notched cells, while the herbivorous Astyanax bimaculatus lacustres showed the lowest frequency compared to the other species studied. Thus, for biomonitoring aquatic genotoxins under field conditions, the food web should also be considered.

Changes in depth and decrease of the sediment rate before and after a building breakhead maintenance construction were studied in small monomictic and eutrophic Lake Fukami-ike in central Japan. The maintenance of farm village drainage and the waterfront function was carried out for the activation of the town in 1992, and the water quality improvement was expected. However, variations of transparency were observed and no blue-green algal bloom outbreak had occurred before recently observed. Maximum depth changed from 9.3 m (1951), 8.5 m (1979), 8.1 cm (1992) to 7.8 m (2012), respectively. Changes in the autochthonous and allochthonous matters in the lake were thus considered. Sediment rates of 19.5 ± 10.19 gm-2d- 1 (1978 to 1979) and 4.40 ± 2.27 gm-2d-1 (2007 to 2008) were observed, and decreased 22.6%. These deposition rate data corresponded to 3.1 cm year-1 (1979) and 1.2 cmyear-1 (2009), respectively. The decreased percentage of organic matter and the reduced deposition rate were because rice fields and forest around the lake give way to take concrete roads. Ice cover can considerably influence the food web structure and dynamics of lake ecosystems during winter. The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that, due to unfavourable conditions, abundances of planktonic organisms are low under ice. The components of the microbial loop (nanoflagellates, ciliates) and the classical food web (algae, rotifers, crustaceans) were investigated in a eutrophic lake from January to April, at 7-day intervals. The phytoplankton was dominated by the mixotrophic chrysophyte Synura uvella, which formed an intense phytoplankton bloom. Nanoflagellates (mostly heterotrophic forms) and ciliates (oligotrichs, prostomatids) were present in relatively high numbers. Rotifers were represented by the algivorous taxa ( Notholca squamula, Polyarthra dolichoptera) and reached surprisingly high abundances. There were no significant correlations between physical parameters and protists, but correlations were apparent between the thickness of the ice and the numbers of cyanobacteria, diatoms (negative) and chrysophytes (positive). The absence of crustaceans and relationships between rotifers and both algae and nanoflagellates indicate that these groups were probably a crucial factor determining the abundance and composition of the rotifer community. Volatile organic sulfur compounds (VOSCs) are frequently reported in eutrophic lakes during the process of algal blooms' degradation. The algal-induced so-called black water blooms have been purported to be a big contributor to the production of VOSCs. However, the production mechanism of VOSCs in black water blooms and its influencing factors still remain unclear. In this study, a laboratory sediment/algal slurry experiment was carried out to investigate the formation process of black water blooms and factors such as temperature, microorganisms, and sulfate concentrations on the production of VOSCs in eutrophic lake sediments during the decomposition of algal blooms. The simulation study indicated that black water blooms can only be produced with the participation of sediment and algal together, which could be the result of low redox potential and the continuous release of ferrion irons (Fe) and hydrogen sulfide (HS) into the lake's ecosystem; however, neither of algal nor sediment can induce the formation of black water blooms. In addition, the sediment + algal treatment can produce more VOSCs than a single sediment or algal treatment. Higher temperature incubation and a higher concentration of sulfate additions can enhance the concentration of HS and VOSCs in black water blooms. However, the addition of microbial inhibitors in the algal/sediment slurry indicated that sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) can stimulate the production of VOSCs, whereas methanogen might consume some concentration of VOSCs and thus lower their concentration in black water blooms. Lake Fukami-ike is a small eutrophic lake of 2.1 ha with a maximum depth of 7.70 m in central Japan and water stratified from March to October. Anoxic conditions prevailed below 4-5 m depth from April to October and a photosynthetic green sulfur bacteria (BChl.c) accumulated in the hypolimnion. In Lake Fukami-ike, the revetment work was environment maintenance for activation of the town in 1992, and the water quality of this lake was considered to be clean. However, fluctuation in the transparency became larger than before. Data before and after revetment work (1992) was studied. The DOC amount of stagnation period was increased after revetment work more than before it, and the difference between maximum and minimum values also increased. Chl.a was increased in both water concentration and the water column. BChl.c had been confirmed to increase concentration and biomass. The inflow of domestic wastewater did not stop; nutrients increased and Chl.a, BChl.c and the DOC also increased. Toxic cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (CyanoHABs) have posed serious water use and public health threats because of the toxins they produce, such as the microcystins (MCs). The direct physical effects of turbulence on MCs, however, have not yet been addressed and is still poorly elucidated. In this study, a 6-day mesocosm experiment was carried out to evaluate the effects of wind wave turbulence on the competition of toxic Microcystis and MCs production in highly eutrophicated and turbulent Lake Taihu, China. Under turbulent conditions, MCs concentrations (both total and extracellular) significantly increased and reached a maximum level 3.4 times higher than in calm water. Specifically, short term (∼3 days) turbulence favored the growth of toxic Microcystis species, allowing for the accumulation of biomass which also triggered the increase in MCs toxicity. Moreover, intense turbulence raises the shear stress and could cause cell mechanical damage or cellular lysis resulting in cell breakage and leakage of intracellular materials including the toxins. The results indicate that short term (∼3 days) turbulence is beneficial for MCs production and release, which increase the potential exposure of aquatic organisms and humans. This study suggests that the importance of water turbulence in the competition of toxic Microcystis and MCs production, and provides new perspectives for control of toxin in CyanoHABs-infested lakes.
