This Deliverable D2.5 reports the work done in Tasks 2.1, 2.3, 2.4, 2.5 and 2.6, and follows on from the interim report at Month 36 (D2.4). Work done under Task 2.2 has been reported in D2.3. The overall objective of WP2 is to “Extend and Support the ARIADNE community”. This has been achieved partly through online meetings, training events and conferences, social media, and promotional materials. There has also been a focus on engaging with new partners to bring them to the same level of awareness as those who participated in the previous project, and a particular aim to extend our coverage in central and south-eastern Europe. We have also worked with major associations and international bodies, such as the European Archaeological Council (EAC) and European Association of Archaeologists (EAA), to help promote a FAIR approach to archaeological data, and to inform strategic policy making. We have tried to target archaeological professionals and heritage managers, who may be less aware of ARIADNE than those working in academic and research institutions. In addition, we have worked closely with our international partners to extend the reach of ARIADNEplus beyond Europe. As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a reduction in the number of face-to-face networking opportunities between M18 and M36; nearly all meetings had to be held online but this did not lead to any major deviations from the workplan. Face-to-face events resumed from summer 2022, with a major ARIADNEplus presence at the 2022 EAA and CHNT conferences. Since our interim report at M36, the ARIADNEplus portal has allowed us to demonstrate the benefits of data aggregation according to the enhanced AO-Cat data model, and this activity intensified during the final work period. We have extended the ARIADNE community by creating a category of Associate partners. This has been hugely successful, with 17 organisations joining the consortium, in a self-funding capacity, but amounting to over 24 person months of discretionary effort. This has allowed us to provide integrated access to several additional internationally important datasets. Other organisations, such as the British Museum, have not joined as formal Associate partners, but have invested time and staff resource in working with an ARIADNE partner to provide access to their own data. Several of the European schools abroad, including French and British schools based in Athens and Ankara, have been keen to participate. Our emphasis on south-eastern Europe has attracted associate partners in countries such as North Macedonia, Serbia, Croatia and the Slovak Republic, where there has been little previous tradition of open access to research data in archaeology and heritage. In conclusion, within the project lifetime ARIADNE has become established as a major component of the European e-infrastructure. It is certainly the largest research data aggregator within the Arts and Humanities, and a significant player across all disciplines. This leaves us with confidence for the future sustainability, and in the last few months of the current funded project we are exploring the best options to maintain the community we have established. &nbsp

Modern scientific instruments are becoming essential for discoveries because they provide unprecedented insight into physical or biological events – often in real time. However, these instruments may generate large amounts of data, and increasingly they require sophisticated e-infrastructure for analysis, storage and archive. The increasing complexity and scale of the data, processing steps and systems has made it difficult for domain scientists to perform their research, narrowing the user base to a select few. In this paper, we present a framework that democratises large-scale instrument-based science, increasing the number of researchers who can engage. We discuss a prototype at the University of Queensland. The system is illustrated through two case studies, one involving light microscopy imaging of the innate immune system, and the other electron microscopy imaging of the SARS-CoV-2 viral proteins.&nbsp

The main goal of the project Croatian scientific and educational cloud (HR-ZOO) is to build a national research and innovation e-infrastructure for the Croatian scientific and academic community. HR-ZOO infrastructure will provide a long-term advanced computing, storage and network resources as well as scientific software and specialized support to researchers that are necessary for multidisciplinary science and education. Advanced computing component consists of 1.1 PFLOPS high performance computing (HPC) resource, cloud computing resource with over 11,000 processor cores as well as virtual data centre infrastructure for deployment of critical services. Storage component will provide 10 PB of storage accessible via Network File System (NFS) or object storage S3 protocols. Resources will be deployed in five data centers connected with the new 100 Gbit/s network infrastructure. In this presentation, presenter described HR-ZOO service catalogue with the emphasis on services that are most interesting to computational chemistry users. Furthermore, he gave an overview of the status of implementation of HR-ZOO infrastructure.

31 slides.-- Keynote speech delivered on Day III of the CRIS2022 conference The presentation describes the leading role played by the University of Zagreb Computing Center (SRCE) in the development of the research e-infrastructure framework in Croatia. This effort involves the integration and interconnection of computational hardware and software technology, data resources and services, communications protocols and networks, as well as the human resources and organisational structures required to support modern, internationally leading collaborative research. The emerging national-level e-infrastructure in Croatia is outlined with an emphasis on Open Science implementation, including initiatives like the Croatian Open Science Cloud (HR-OOZ) and the CroRIS national CRIS currently under development.

35 slides.-- Keynote speech delivered on Day I of the CRIS2022 conference. The presentation summarises the recent developments around the European Open Science Could (EOSC) as a 'web of FAIR data' where any dataset relevant for a research work could easily be found in a similar way to how many other things can be found via an adequate query on an search engine. The EOSC is presented as a milestone in the route towards Open Science and as a data infrastructure that complements the European e-infrastructure organisations. The technical and social challenges for delivering the EOSC are explored and the implementation steps described.

The paper considers the specifics of unique scientific facilities functioning at the present time. A number of Russian and European megascience facilities are considered. It is shown that currently megascience facilities utilization focuses at the maximum standardization and automation of processes, with the transfer of a significant part of the activity to the remote access format. These trends have received an additional impetus due to the quarantine regime during coronavirus pandemic. The necessary changes to business processes related to the operation of megascience facilities in distant mode are discussed. The role of e-Infrastructure (including the construction of digital twins) as an essential part of unique scientific facilities is revealed. The idea of a possible new form of international scientific research is formulated.

Dans le cadre du mouvement international de la science ouverte, le projet ANR SO-DRIIHM traite de la structuration, du partage et de l’ouverture des données produites au sein d’un dispositif rassemblant treize observatoires (OHM) du CNRS-INEE : le Dispositif de Recherche Interdisciplinaire sur les Interactions Hommes-Milieux soutenu par l’ANR (LabEx DRIIHM 2012-2025). Le projet ANR SO-DRIIHM (octobre 2020 - mars 2023) est l'un des 25 lauréats de l'appel Flash science ouverte de l'ANR. L'un des objectifs de ce projet est la spécification, la conception et le développement d'une e-infrastructure pour la science ouverte de la communauté du labEx DRIIHM. Cette dernière vise à faciliter le dépôt, le partage de ressources et favoriser les coopérations en offrant de nouvelles solutions à la communauté de recherche interdisciplinaire (environnement et SHS) et à la communauté en soutien à la gestion des données. C'est l'un des uses cases de l'alliance académique transdisciplinaire sur les ressources numériques et les pratiques de connaissance DataNoos, basée à Toulouse. Ce use case se focalise sur la couche d'intermédiation des utilisateurs avec l'éco-système de la science ouverte. Nous travaillons notamment à définir et à développer les besoins et usages attendus pour la recherche et le dépôt de données en étroite collaboration avec la communauté intéressée.

Calibration certificate is an important reference point for metrological measurement traceability. In connection with the approval of the latest revision of SI and the dissemination of a new reference base based on quantum standards, the issue of digitalization of calibration certificates becomes especially urgent. The possibilities of electronic and even more digital calibration certificates (hereinafter DCC) significantly improve the traceability of measurements in comparison with the traditional paper certificate. The form and content of DCC, however, are still not clearly determined and require deep study. Our work is aimed at presenting and summarizing the available results in this field, and formulating the critical questions on the creation of DCC that arise during the work on its implementation. Based on the analysis performed and our own experience in the implementation of the electronic calibration certificate (ECC) we presented a preliminary scheme for the implementation of DCC in our organization. We also touch upon related issues, namely digital signature and e-infrastructure of National Scientific Centre “Institute of Metrology” (NSC IM).

By embracing and aligning with other European initiatives who contribute to the struggle against COVID-19, such as ELIXIR and EOSC-Life, PaRI facilitates pandemic research for Nordic researchers. The one-year project has built a secure platform for managing and executing tools and workflows for cross-border pandemic data processing. Data processing means collecting, quality controlling, analysing and securely storing data. Making it possible for multiple organisations in the Nordic region to have the same processes enables more seamless and efficient collaboration in further research. One of the PaRI project’s objectives was to implement Nordic pilots and best practices for FAIR data that benefit from these technical results. The project benefits greatly from the outcomes of NeIC’s Tryggve project. NeIC PaRI project contributed to NeIC Strategic objectives, which are aligned with PaRI partners objectives, as follows : Facilitate collection and storage of sequence and other human related COVID-19 data Facilitate Nordic analysis of Nordic pandemic data using Galaxy and a research e-infrastructure in the Nordics Deploy Secure cloud infrastructure for sharing and presentation of pandemic research datasets and results Contribute to building the evolutionary tree of viral strains, based on RNA sequences of patient samples infected with coronavirus as they become known and shared. Intend to make the viral and host data collected during pandemic findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable (FAIR) by supporting seamless cross-border access, and adopting data representation standards by existing federated sharing platforms, e.g. EGA. Work in close collaboration with other nordic e-Infrastructure projects in addition to EU projects to support the use cases. PaRI partners are: University of Oslo (UiO), University of Bergen (UiB), Technical University of Denmark (DTU), Estonian Scientific Compute Infrastructure (ETAIS), German Network for Bioinformatics Infrastructure (de.NBI), National Bioinformatics Infrastructure Sweden (NBIS). Among the most important achievements of the project and its collaborators is the Galaxy Nordic COVID-19 portal. The portal monitors the public output of viral genome sequencing projects that is submitted to the ENA and makes the data more accessible for further use. The portal also demonstrates the feasibility of tracking the output of national genome surveillance projects. The Nordic COVID-19 portal is part of the international Galaxy network. Galaxy helps researchers perform computational analyses with their data without having to have expertise in informatics, programming or data visualization. The platform is open source and enables accessible, reproducible and transparent computational research. Another output of the PaRI project is the PaRI dashboard, a visualisation tool designed to help stakeholders such as epidemiologists, state institutions and researchers monitor the pandemic locally, down to regional and municipality levels. The dashboard is based on the NextStrain tool and visualizes Nordic COVID-19 data (raw sequencing data brokered into ENA or consensus sequences from the Galaxy pipeline). The dashboard visualizes the data as well as any connected metadata, allowing for filtering of created visualisation. Furthermore, it even allows adding sensitive metadata to the sequences, with the key feature that this additional metadata will only be stored in the user’s browser and thus aligned with any local legislation about sensitive data sharing.

This presentation took part within the kick-off meeting of the project “Assessing the digital readiness of higher education in Croatia”, agreed between the Croatian Ministry for Education and Science, the OECD Higher Education Policy Team and the European Commission’s Directorate General for Structural Reform Support (DG REFORM). The presentation elaborates the role of SRCE (University of Zagreb University Computing Centre) as the architect of the e-infrastructure of the entire system of science and higher education of the Republic of Croatia, competence centre for information and communication technologies as well as the centre for education and support in the area of ICT application. The main focus is set on the E-learning Centre at SRCE and high quality, easily accessible and sustainable support that it provides to higher education institutions, teachers and students, reflecting on present situation and education in post-pandemic.

It is important to note that file management is the responsibility of the individual organisation, and that this document only offers an example as a guideline. University of Zagreb University Computing Centre - SRCE is an institution that has a long tradition in the area of information and communication technologies. It was founded in 1971 within the University of Zagreb, the only Croatian university at the time, with the purpose to enhance the implementation of information technologies in the academic community as well as in Croatia in general. Today, 50 years after, SRCE is the main computing centre and the architect of the e-infrastructure, covering both the University of Zagreb and the whole research and high education system. Furthermore, SRCE is the competence centre for information and communication technologies as well as the centre for education and support in the area of ICT application. This presentation focuses on the overview of the infrastructure as well as services that SRCE provides, supporting the national academic community and cultivating international cooperation.

Advanced computing relies on state-of-the-art computer systems, platforms, and algorithms in solving computer- and data-intensive scientific and engineering challenges. Advanced computing has vastly improved data analysis both in science and in the humanities. Many of the recent discoveries would not have been possible without the use of high-performance computing (HPC) and high-performance data analytics (HPDA) infrastructures, as well as platforms enabling advanced artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms. SRCE offers several advanced computing services: HPC resource Isabella, HTC Cloud, and JupyterLab services. HPC resource Isabella provides over 3,000 processor cores and 12 GPUs together with over 50 scientific applications ready for use. HTC Cloud is a cloud-computing platform that allows the users to provision flexible computing platform with high computing and storage requirements. A common use of HTC Cloud is ad-hoc provisioning of virtual machines for interactive data processing and provisioning of larger systems such as computer clusters or big data analytics platforms. JupyterLab services allow the users to instantiate Jupyter notebooks—popular web-based interactive environment for running data science, scientific computing, and machine learning workflows. European High Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU) is an EU initiative aiming to build large-scale supercomputer infrastructure that will provide significant HPC capacity for European scientists, private individuals, and industry.In the first phase, EuroHPC will build three pre-exascale and five petascale supercomputers providing aggregated performance of over 650 PFLOPS.In parallel, National Competence Centres in the Framework of EuroHPC (EuroCC) project aim to build National Competence Centers (NCCs) that will promote HPC and support researchers in accessing EuroHPC resources. European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) aims to build federated multi-disciplinary environment for publishing, finding, using, and processing research data. EOSC will bridge the existing and emerging research infrastructures, research data collections, and innovative thematic services allowing the researchers, companies, and private individuals to collaborate and work across country and discipline borders. Besides the access to the generic services (compute, storage), the researchers can also access thematic services on-boarded to EOSC. There are several thematic infrastructures available for the humanities and social sciences, which are supported by EOSC. For Arts & Humanities, there is DARIAH (Digital Research Infrastructure for Arts and Humanities), which aims to enhance and support digitally enabled research and teaching across these disciplines. CLARIN (Common Language Resources and Technology Infrastructure) is a research infrastructure inspired by the vision that all digital language resources and tools from all over Europe and beyond should be accessible through a single online environment for the support of researchers in the humanities and social sciences. There is also E-RIHS (European Research Infrastructure for Heritage Science), which supports research on heritage interpretation, preservation, documentation, and management.

MATE-SHS : Méthodes, Analyses, Terrains, Enquêtes en Sciences Humaines et Sociales; National audience; Le DRIIHM est un Dispositif de Recherche Interdisciplinaire sur les Interactions Hommes-Milieux, porté par l’Institut Écologie et Environnement (InEE) du CNRS et labellisé Laboratoire d’Excellence en 2012 par l’ANR (Agence Nationale de la Recherche). Il fédère et anime aujourd’hui 13 Observatoires Hommes-Milieux (OHM), dont 6 sont en métropole, 2 en Outre-mer et 5 à l’international (OHMi). En 2021, ce sont plus de 1200 acteurs de la recherche (chercheurs, enseignants-chercheurs et personnels de soutien à la recherche) de toutes les sciences de l’environnement et représentant près de 200 unités de recherche et plus de 30 EPST, Grandes Ecoles, Universités qui composent la communauté DRIIHM. De fait, les données produites par ces scientifiques sont variées. Citons à titre d’exemples, des données brutes issues de capteurs environnementaux, des données d’enquêtes couplées à des analyses statistiques, des données à référence spatiale, supports à des analyses spatio-temporelles, des simulations 3D, des modélisations. Ce peut être aussi des données stratigraphiques, diverses analyses physico-chimiques, des inventaires faune/flore, etc. Selon leur ancienneté, leurs moyens humains et financiers, certains OHM ont pu développer leurs propres outils de gestion de données quand d’autres ont bénéficié de leur retours d’expériences et de l’expertise des ingénieurs référents œuvrant au sein du groupe de travail Data-DRIIHM. Ainsi, depuis 2014, un pool d’outils, sélectionnés ou développés, a été mutualisé au sein du DRIIHM (ex : géocatalogue, web SIG, photothèque, timeline, frise chronosystémique, outil de gestion bibliographique...). Toutefois, il ne permet toujours pas de couvrir la réalité quantitative et plurielle de l’ensemble des données produites au sein des OHM. La mise en valeur et l’accessibilité à certains jeux de données fait encore trop souvent défaut. Plusieurs facteurs explicatifs ont été identifiés (Arnaud et al, 2020*), c’est l’absence d’un portail unique d’accès aux données des OHM qui sera discuté ici. Avec le contexte “Science Ouverte” en plein dynamisme, le groupe Data-DRIIHM s’est engagé à accompagner et accélérer le changement des pratiques. Au regard de la diversité disciplinaire et de l’hétérogénéité des données traitées, de nouvelles solutions devaient être proposées. C’est ainsi qu’est né le projet "SO-DRIIHM" (octobre 2020 - mars 2023), lauréat de l’Appel Flash "science ouverte : pratiques de recherche et données ouvertes", proposé par l’ANR en 2019. Son objectif est d’optimiser l’appropriation de la démarche de Science Ouverte par la communauté scientifique DRIIHM à travers :- la sensibilisation des chercheurs aux bénéfices du partage et de l’ouverture des données, ainsi qu’aux nouvelles pratiques associées ;- la co-construction d’une e-infrastructure ergonomique, interopérable, intégrant les outils existants et accompagnant toujours plus efficacement les chercheurs pour trouver, partager et (ré)utiliser les données, avec l’implémentation concrète et progressive des principes FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable).Ce projet s’appuie sur une approche transversale impliquant à la fois des chercheurs et des personnels d’appui à la recherche du DRIIHM. Cette co-construction nous paraît essentielle pour améliorer l’e-infrastructure actuelle, fonctionnelle et conforme aux règles énoncées, aux standards et aux normes en vigueur, mais qui ne s’avère pas satisfaisante en termes d’usages - comme le suggère les travaux et retours sur ce sujet au sein des OHM. Ce sont les notions d’utilité, d’utilisabilité, d’intérêt pour les chercheurs qui sont visées pour qu'ils s’approprient pleinement la future e-infrastructure. Une vraie originalité est que SO-DRIIHM associe également des ergonomes et spécialistes du développement web (l’UMR IRIT et la société Makina Corpus) afin d’élaborer une e-infrastructure lisible, agréable, intuitive et conviviale pour toute la communauté scientifique des observatoires. Parmi les premiers résultats attendus, un prototype d’e-infrastructure offrira la facilité d’accès non seulement aux données cataloguées des OHM, mais aussi aux données jugées d’intérêt par les OHM et issues d’infrastructures de données externes - ceci à l’aide de la technologie du web sémantique facilitant l’interopérabilité. Les données des OHM seront ainsi mises en valeur et plus faciles d’accès via un portail unique, favorisant leur croisement entre elles et entre les OHM, ainsi qu’avec des données complémentaires. L’évolution régulière du prototype dépendra étroitement des retours des bêta-testeurs volontaires parmi la communauté DRIIHM. A terme, l’e-infrastructure DATA-DRIIHM vise à être un "aiguilleur du FAIR", favorisant les pratiques de Science Ouverte. En plus de l’accès facilité aux données, ce portail guidera pas à pas le dépôt et la "FAIRisation" des données des OHM dans des entrepôts de données recommandés (disciplinaires, institutionnels...), promouvant notamment la création de Plans de Gestion de Données (PGD) et de Data Papers. Une documentation et des actions de (in-)formations permettront de maximiser l’utilisation de la plateforme. Ce projet offre ainsi l’opportunité de répondre aux recommandations du Plan national pour la Science Ouverte, ainsi qu’aux feuilles de route institutionnelles, tout en renforçant les interactions et la collaboration entre les chercheurs des OHM et le groupe Data-DRIIHM, voire au-delà. Il rendra ainsi plus aisée la ré-exploitation des données produites en écologie globale sur les interactions hommes-milieux, pratique incontournable dans le cadre d’une démarche interdisciplinaire et de projets transverses à plusieurs OHM.

One of the priorities of the European Commission is the development and integration of open science policy, which will “improve the quality, efficiency, and responsiveness of research” (European Commission, 2021). The EU funded project FOSTER Plus (Fostering the practical implementation of Open Science in Horizon 2020 and beyond) defines open science as “practice of science in such a way that others can collaborate and contribute, where research data, lab notes, and other research processes are freely available, under terms that enable reuse, redistribution and reproduction of the research and its underlying data and methods” (FOSTER, 2017). Over the years, several institutions and initiatives in Croatia have advocated openness and built support for open science. In June 2021, SRCE – University of Zagreb University Computing Centre led the launch of the National Open Science Cloud (NOSC) Initiative named the Croatian Open Science Cloud (abbrev. locally HR-OOZ) Initiative. The Initiative gathered prominent national institutions with an active role in the field of open science and it includes representatives of all important stakeholder groups: research performing organizations (RPO), research funding organizations, research supporting organizations and policy makers. List of RPOs that joined the Initiative includes all public universities and Croatian representatives or national coordinators of European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERICs): Institute of Ethnology and Folklore Research (DARIAH), Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Zagreb (CLARIN and CESSDA), Ruđer Bošković Institute (CERIC, OpenAIRE NOAD, NI4OS-Europe project partner). The main research funding organization – Croatian Science Foundation also joined the initiative together with the main policy maker – Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Croatia. Besides SRCE, which is the main e-infrastructure and data services provider for the Croatian higher education and research system, the national Research Data Alliance node and the NI4OS-Europe project partner, the National and University Library in Zagreb joined the Initiative. Inclusion of many institutions and representatives of all stakeholder groups will hopefully ensure greater acceptance, impact and sustainability of the Initiative’s results. Active involvement of relevant stakeholders in creating required preconditions for the implementation, realization, and promotion of open science should lead to improved research conditions which is necessary to achieve top research results for the benefit of the academic community as well as the entire society of the Republic of Croatia. The Initiative aims to build a modern, high-quality, internationally relevant, and competitive science system based on the principles of open science, which is harmonized and connected with European Research Area and relevant European initiatives. The Initiative has two main goals. The first goal is to setup the HR-OOZ which includes tasks of defining its organizational and governance structure, defining the technological principles of the components that will make the HR-OOZ.

Science gateways, virtual laboratories and virtual research environments are all terms used to refer to community-developed digital environments that are designed to meet a set of needs for a research community. Specifically, they refer to integrated access to research community resources including software, data, collaboration tools, workflows, instrumentation and high-performance computing, usually via Web and mobile applications. Science gateways, virtual laboratories and virtual research environments are enabling significant contributions to many research domains, facilitating more efficient, open, reproducible research in bold new ways. This paper explores the global impact achieved by the sum effects of these programs in increasing research impact, demonstrates their value in the broader digital landscape and discusses future opportunities. This is evidenced through examination of national and international programs in this field.

INTRODUCTION:The potentials of Africa for growth and economic transformation through science remains challenging because of existing gaps in knowledge and infrastructure. The Africa Pharmacological Science Gateway project and the Medicines Utilization Research in Africa Group seeks to meet the research needs of African pharmacologists. This study aimed at identifying priority needs that might be met by access to information and tools through e-infrastructure. METHODS:A web-based cross-sectional study among 472 members of pharmacological societies in Africa to obtain information on their research interests and skills, available resources, needs and knowledge gaps. Descriptive analyses were done. RESULTS:A total of 118 responses from 13 countries were received, mostly from Nigeria (48.3%) and South Africa (21.3%). Respondents had wide ranges of research interests predominantly in drug utilization research.The desired resources included drug utilization research training and tools, pharmacokinetics and pharmacometrics modelling training and tools, drug-drug interaction and medicine prices resources, statistical analysis resources, access to journals, training in specific laboratory techniques, equipment and funding for research-related activities. CONCLUSIONS:Key areas of needs not currently provided by the African Pharmacological Science Gateway e-infrastructure were identified to guide further provision of resources on the e-infrastructure and potentially enhance research capacity within the continent.

This document reports the results of an e-infrastructure evaluation performed by the Improved Observation Usage in NWP (iOBS) project. The goal was to evaluate how future e-infrastructure for numerical weather prediction (NWP) could make use of cloud and high-performance computing (HPC) resources. New kinds of computing infrastructure is needed to tackle challenges coming from both data ingestion of crowdsourced data and integration of machine learning components to standard IT systems. As HPC has always been central to NWP this work focused primarily on the possibilities of cloud technologies.
