Questions of the need for treatment of oral diseases, problems and characteristics of providing dental care for children with developmental disorders, especially with autism spectrum disorders, both in Russia and abroad have very little coverage. Usual conditions for dental care for these children are unacceptable. A clear, scientifi¬cally based system of dental care is needed to reduce the number of diseases of the oral cavity. Results of stud¬ies of the dental status of children with autism spectrum disorders in foreign countries are presented in a brief review. Features and algorithm of dental care for children with autism spectrum disorders worked out by the staff of Yevdokimov Moscow State University of Medicine and Dentistry are described. Medical institutions providing dental care to children with autism spectrum disorders in Moscow are listed.

Introduction Dental caries prevention in early childhood is crucial, necessitating timely assessments by dental professionals and parents. The oral health of children during their early years can significantly impact both the children themselves and their parents' quality of life. This study seeks to assess the changes in oral health-related quality of life after treatment under nitrous oxide sedation in anxious preschool children, for whom treatment otherwise is quite difficult chairside. Aim The aim of this study is to assess the association between dental caries status, risk assessment, and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in 3-6-year-old children, before and after undergoing treatment under nitrous oxide inhalation sedation. Materials and methods Eighty children were assessed for caries risk and dental status using the caries risk assessment for treatment (CRAFT) tool. Nitrous oxide sedation was employed for dental treatment, and assessments were conducted pre-treatment and post-treatment. Statistical analyses performed were paired t-tests, correlation analyses, and Chi-Square tests. Results The study revealed a mean age of 4.033 ± 0.96, with a balanced gender distribution (47.5% boys, 52.5% girls). Post-treatment, significant negative correlations were observed between OHRQoL and treatment outcomes, emphasizing improved oral health-related quality of life. Associations were found between OHRQoL, pufa index, and caries risk post-treatment. Conclusion The current research suggests that treatment done under nitrous oxide sedation could improve the OHRQoL in preschool children. Integrating risk assessment and OHRQoL enhances understanding, facilitating targeted prevention and treatment strategies. Objective of the research was to evaluate level of correspondence between skeletal and dental maturity parameters and their relation to chronological age among orthodontic patients with different sagittal relationship at the end of puberty period. A sample of 61 patients' datasets (clinical records, OPG, cephalogram) aged 15-17 years old was divided into 3 subgroups considering specifics of sagittal relationship (I, II and III Class). For each subgroup evaluation of dental age and staging of teeth development were provided with the use of Demirjian's method. Evaluation of skeletal maturity was provided with the use of cervical vertebral maturation (CVM) method by the analysis of present cephalograms.85.24% persons were registered with H stage of second molars development, 80.32% persons with H stage of canines development, and 95.08% persons with H stage of second premolars development with no statistical differences of developmental stages distribution of above mentioned teeth between I, II and III Class (p >0.05). Correlation values between canine developmental stages and CS5 and CS6 were equal to the range of 0.52-0.64 and 0.60-0.69 respectively; between second premolar developmental stages and CS5 and CS6 - 0.61- 0.67 and 0.60-0.69 respectively; between second molar developmental stages and CS5 and CS6 - 0.51-0.53 and 0.50-0.58 respectively. Obtained results allow to resume that deviations of dental age among persons with different sagittal relationship prior to orthodontic treatment characterized with the analogical tendencies of distribution, thus providing us with primary evidences for theoretical hypothesis that dental maturation patterns used for dental age estimation are not influenced by the fact of different sagittal relationship itself. Objective: Little is known about exploring the oral health related quality of life (OHRQoL) of school children in Saudi Arabia. The importance of examining this topic has centred on its ability to measure associations between the oral symptoms, impacts and clinical measures. This study aims to explore associations between the (OHRQoL) based on the children's Oral Impacts on Daily Performance (Child‐OIDP) index and oral diseases of Saudi school children living in Albaha region. Materials and methods: A cross‐sectional study was conducted between November 2017 to January 2018 using two‐stage randomised sampling technique. The oral diseases and impacts were examined using the World Health Organization's (1997) guidelines and the Child‐OIDP index, respectively. Data analysis was conducted using the SPSS software version 20.0. Chi‐squared, bivariate and multivariate logistic regression tests were used, as appropriate. Results: In total 349 Saudi male school children, 12 to 15 years old, were recruited. The Child‐OIDPrate was significantly high (75.1%). The participants reported minor, moderate and major (severe) oral impacts (29.4%, 50%, and 20.6% respectively). The overall mean of the Child‐OIDP score was 2.15±1.40. Conclusions: The high overall Child‐OIDP score was in accordance with the participants' dental status. Aims: Xerostomia syndrome is a significant medical and social problem. It is manifested by objective and subjective symptoms of a "dry mouth" and a decrease in sialometry. The aim of the study was to determine the dental status of students of different nationalities, to identify xerostomia induced on a background of stress, and to assess the effectiveness of the use of moisturizing foams in alleviating xerostomia. Materials and Methods: A prospective cohort study survey (Fox test) of 100 students of the dental faculty was conducted to detect false xerostomia. The study involved 60 people with false xerostomia, divided into four groups of 15 each according to the nationality. The level of oral hygiene was determined using the Simplified Oral Hygiene and Silness-Loe indices and the rate of salivation was assessed with sialometry method by Pozharitskaya. Oral hygiene instructions were given to the participants. They were to apply moisturizing foams with lactoferrin, lactoperoxidase, and aloe vera, two–three times during the day for 3 weeks. A set of statistical programs was used (Microsoft Excel [2007] and the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences [SPSS], version 23) to perform Kolmogorov–Smirnov, Shapiro–Wilk, Kruskal–Wallis, and Wilcoxon tests. Results: A statistically significant improvement in oral hygiene was observed in all study participants. A significant increase was detected in the rate of salivation in students from Russia (P = 0.005), Transcaucasian countries (P = 0.006), and Arab countries (P = 0.005). Conclusion: It has been established that the use of moisturizing foam has a positive effect on the rate of salivation and improves the level of oral hygiene, thereby improving the quality of life for patients. Abstract The aim of this study was to investigate food oral processing and bolus formation in the elderly population, and their relationship with the perception of oral comfort, for two soft cereal products of different composition: sponge-cake and brioche. Twenty subjects aged 65 and over participated in the study. They were classified in two groups according to dental status (poor vs. satisfactory) and presented various stimulated salivary flow rate (SSF) in each group. Food bolus properties (hydration ratio and apparent viscosity) were characterized after three chewing stages for both groups. Results showed that chewing duration did not depend on food product but rather on physiology: subjects with a poor dental status had a shorter chewing duration. For each chewing stage, sponge-cake boli showed a higher hydration ratio than brioche boli, which showed higher apparent viscosity. For sponge-cake, perception of oral comfort was primarily driven by SSF rate, irrespective of the dental status. In the case of brioche, oral comfort was also partially explained by SSF in the case of subjects with poor dental status. This result suggests that perception of oral comfort in brioche could be driven by product related attributes rather than oral health. For both foods, a phenomenological model of bolus viscosity as a function of stimulated salivary flow and chewing duration was proposed. Aims and Objectives: Common conditions of daily routine and diet may affect the dental status of individuals in organized groups and professional communities. The aim of this study was to reveal the specific aspects of dental status in orthodox priests and monks of the Yaroslavl region, Russia. Materials and Methods: Dental assessment of 311 participants (111 monks; 111 priests; and 90 local residents, not clergymen – as a control group) was performed, including Decayed, Missed, Filled Teeth, oral hygiene index (simplified), gingival, and Modified Papillary Bleeding Indices (MPBIs). The participants completed a questionnaire on food habits and awareness concerning dental health preservation. Statistical Analysis Used: Statistical analysis of the data was performed in SPSS software with the use of Shapiro–Wilk, Dunn's, Fisher tests, z-test as well as Spearman correlation, and ANOVA. Results: The median values of MPBI in monks were higher than in the groups of priests and local residents (P = 0.005). The differences in number of missing teeth were significantly higher in priests compared with local residents (P = 0.011), and the number of filled teeth was significantly higher in priests (P = 0.006) and local residents (P = 0.007) compared with monks. Wedge-shaped defects and erosions were more prevalent in the groups of priests (0.0018 and 0.001, respectively) and monks (0.004 and 0.001, respectively). ANOVA resulted in statistically significant influence of teeth brushing frequency and frequency of food intake on hygienic and periodontal indices values. Conclusions: The increased prevalence of some dental diseases among priests and monks could be attributed to the specific diet, lifestyle, and limited access to dental care. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: To identify relationships between masticatory ability and age, and dental and prosthodontic status amongst an institutionalized elderly dentate population in China.Materials and methods: A sample of 512 elders living in eight nursing homes in Qingdao was categorized based on a hierarchical dental functional classification system with and without tooth replacements. Masticatory disability scores (MDSs) were analyzed using multiple regression models with only age, and age and dentition variables for participants having ≥ 10 natural and those having < 10 natural teeth in each jaw.Results: Overall, associations between MDS and age, number of teeth, and number of teeth replaced by dental prostheses were identified. For participants having ≥ 10 natural teeth in each jaw, no significant associations between MDS and age and dental and prosthodontic status were found. Participants having < 10 natural teeth in each jaw had higher MDS (increasing chewing difficulties) at higher ages. However, when "premolar region sufficient" and "molar region sufficient" were included, MDS was not associated with age, but with these dentition variables. For participants having ≥ 10 teeth including prosthodontically replaced teeth in each jaw, age was the only variable associated with MDS. For participants having < 10 teeth including teeth replaced in each jaw, the significant factor was "premolar region sufficient." Overall, lower MDS was associated with increasing number of teeth, as well as with increasing number of teeth replaced by dental prostheses.Conclusions: In this population of institutionalized dentate elderly, masticatory ability was significantly associated with dental and prosthodontic status.Clinical relevance: For institutionalized elderly, having less than ten natural teeth in each jaw is associated with chewing problems. Most important dentition factor is the presence of three to four premolar pairs. The aim of the research is to study the dental status of children with concomitant somatic pathology, to establish the interrelated correlations. To reach the aim the clinical observation of 460 12-15-year-old children was conducted: I group – children with chronic gastroduodenitis (90 people); II – children with dystonia (100); III – children with chronic diseases of the upper respiratory tract (90 people); IV – children with diabetes type 1 (80), V – children with diffuse nontoxic goiter (100 people). Dental status of children was assessed by the indices OHI-S, PMA, CPI, prevalence and intensity of dental caries (DMF - Decayed, Missing, Filled), non-carious lesions of dental hard tissues and dentoalveolar anomalies and deformities. Conclusions. The highest intensity and prevalence of dental caries and periodontal tissue diseases is observed in case of gastroenterological pathology (96.7 and 90.0%, respectively). Dental caries complications are often observed in children with diabetes mellitus (62.5%) and diseases of the gastrointestinal tract (44.4%). Dentofacial anomalies and deformities mostly occur in children with endocrinopathy (66% approximately). Poor oral hygiene, as well as the percentage of carious and extracted teeth in the DMF index structure indicates the need to improve dental care for these children. Development of prevention and treatment differentiated methods of children with concomitant somatic and dental pathology is promising.

Interest in the topic of age assessment for forensic medical identification of personality has not decreased for over the past decade. Establishing an exact age have a critical importance for law enforcement authorities, for example in case of wrongdoing by illegal migrants without identity documents. The search and systemic analysis of published researches devoted to age assessment by dental status in children and adolescents with subsequent updating of the directions of development in this scientific subject theme and the possibility of their realization in practice in the Russian Federation were carried out in order to have an objective concept of used methods of dental status assessment in the world practice.

Оксидный стресс и нарушения метаболизма являются одной из причин поражения тканей полости рта и диктуют необходимость разработки эффективных методов профилактики заболеваний полости рта. Целью работы была оценка распространенности и степени воспаления тканей пародонта, биохимических показателей ротовой жидкости пациентов с сахарным диабетом II типа при профилактических мероприятиях. Материалы и методы. В исследованиях участвовали пациенты 30-60 лет с сахарным диабетом II типа (53 человека). При этом оценивались стоматологический статус, а также в ротовой жидкости активность эластазы, каталазы, лизоцима, уреазы, степень дисбиоза, содержание малонового диальдегида. Пациенты основной группы получали 2 раза в году разработанный и согласованный с терапевтом лечебно-профилактический комплекс. Результаты. Выводы. Разработанный комплекс профилактики и лечения стоматологических заболеваний для пациентов с сахарным диабетом II типа обладает длительным стойким клиническим эффектом, снижает распространённость воспаления практически в 2 раза при I-III степени пародонтита, снижает в полости рта степень дисбиоза в 7,3 раза через 12 месяцев, увеличивает в 2 раза активность лизоцима в ротовой жидкости (неспецифическая резистентность) и улучшает антиоксидантную защиту (в 3,9 раза уменьшает содержание малонового диальдегида). The oxide stress and metabolic disorders are one of the reasons for the defeat of the oral tissues and necessitate the development of effective methods of prevention of oral diseases. The aim of the work was to evaluate the prevalence and degree of inflammation of periodontal tissues, biochemical indices of oral liquid patients with type II diabetes mellitus in the prevention activities. Materials and methods. The study included patients 30-60 years with diabetes mellitus type II (53 persons). When this estimated dental status, as well as oral liquid elastase activity, catalase, lysozyme, urease, the degree of dysbiosis, malonic dialdehyde. Patients of the main group received 2 times per year developed and agreed with the general practitioner and treatment and prophylactic complex. Results. Conclusions. The developed complex of therapeutic measures for patients with type II diabetes has a long persistent clinical effect, reduces the prevalence of inflammation in almost 2 times with I-III degree of periodontitis in the oral cavity, reduces the degree of dysbiosis 7.3 times in 12 months, 2-fold increase in the activity of lysozyme in saliva (nonspecific resistance) and improves antioxidant defense 3.9 times reduces the content of malondialdehyde). The absence of mentally retarded children readiness to dental treatment entails significant costs for the individual and for society, exacerbating dental pathology. Therefore, the identification of patients with a low level of compliance in the future will help them to focus on their influence and to focus on the necessary dental procedures, in order to increase the level of motivation for treatment. In a study of dental status of school-age mentally retarded children of varying severity were found higher rates of oral hygiene, caries and periodontal disease compared to healthy. In addition, the results of the survey indicate a lower level of compliance of mentally retarded children and their parents.

Objective: This cross-sectional survey is aimed to reveal oral health-related quality of life among the neglected elders, aged 60 years old and older, living in an elderly home. Materials and Methods: Survey was conducted at the elderly home of Tha-Bar-Wa Center, Thanlyin township, Yangon, Myanmar. Study participants (n = 146) were selected using systematic random sampling. Interview questionnaire and standard questionnaire of oral health impact profile (OHIP-14) were used to collect data and measured oral health-related quality of life. Dental status was assessed by visual inspection of one researcher throughout the survey. Descriptive statistics, t-test, or analysis of variance (ANOVA) was analyzed to demonstrate mean difference and multiple regression for statistically relationships. Results: Unacceptable level of oral health knowledge (72, 49.3%) and practice (83, 56.8%) were determined, regardless of the acceptable level of attitude (114, 78.1%). OHIP-14 scores range in 0-40, with mean standard deviation (SD) of 18.7 (9.7). Numbers of remaining teeth range in 0-32, with mean SD of 13.6 (8.6). OHIP-14 scores were significantly different between the age groups (60-64 and ≥70) (P = 0.006), living with partner or alone (P = 0.020), having >19 teeth to those being edentulous and those having ≤19 teeth (P < 0.001) and as of unacceptable or acceptable knowledge levels (P = 0.022). Significant negative relationship between number of remaining teeth and score of OHIP-14 was found when controlled for age in the year (β = -0.558, 95% CI = -0.828--0.496, P < 0.001). Conclusion: Oral health-related quality of life in this group of neglected elders was averagely low and systematic oral health care is evidently in need. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Purpose The purpose of this study was to examine whether the status of dentition is associated with incident functional disability in elderly people. Methods This prospective cohort study targeted community-dwelling Japanese adults of age ≥70 years (n = 838). Participants were classified into the following four groups in accordance with Miyachi's Triangular Classification, which represents the status of dentition on the basis of numbers of remaining teeth and occlusal supports: Zone A, ≥10 occlusal supports; Zone B, 5–9 occlusal supports; Zone D, ≤4 occlusal supports and ≥11 remaining teeth and Zone C, ≤10 remaining teeth. Incident functional disability was defined by the first certification of long-term care insurance in Japan. Data regarding age, sex, body mass index, medical history, smoking, alcohol consumption, education, depressive symptoms, cognitive impairment, social support, history of fall, and subjective masticatory ability were collected. Results During follow-up for 5185 person-years, 305 participants experienced functional disability. Considering the follow-up data of ≥3 years from baseline, participants in Zones C (hazard ratio [HR], 1.98; 95 % confidence interval [CI], 1.26–3.11) and D (HR, 2.50; 95 %CI, 1.54–4.05) were found to be more likely to develop functional disability than those in Zone A (p for trend = 0.002). Conclusions Status of dentition was associated with incident functional disability in an elderly Japanese population. The findings of this study suggest that maintenance of remaining teeth and retention of occlusal supports contribute to the prevention of functional disability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: The aim of the current study was to evaluate the functional and psychosocial impacts and changes in overall quality of life (QoL) following oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) therapy in different age groups and in different oral locations.Materials and Methods: The study assessed questionnaire responses from patients with OSCC (n = 1319) after 6 months of oncologic therapy, as collected in the DÖSAK Rehab Study. Oncological variables, dental status, sensory, QoL, psychosocial outcomes and coping strategies in younger (45-60 years) and older (61-100 years) patients were assessed for different OSCC locations including the entire oral cavity, maxilla, mandible and others besides the maxilla and mandible.Results: Younger patients were generally less satisfied with their dental status and experienced more sensory and QoL impairments, as well as more psychological burden, compared to the older patients. Depending on the age group, different coping strategies were used. Oncologic therapy targeted to the mandible and other locations besides the maxilla and mandible led to the strongest sensory and QoL limitations.Conclusions: Regardless of age, oncologic OSCC therapy leads to profound sensory and psychosocial restrictions and to limitations in QoL. Reasons for the poorer functional and QoL outcomes in younger patients include a more invasive treatment and a lower psychosocial resilience. The identification of patients with depressive and dysfunctional coping strategies should be carried out for all ages, but especially in younger patients, in order to develop functional coping strategies through individualized counseling, treatment and rehabilitation.Registration Of Clinical Trials: Observational study, therefore not required. Relationship between ante-mortem tooth loss and age in past human populations was evaluated in this article. The skeletal remains found during the archeological investigations at Hadrianopolis region by Edirne Museum during 2002-2003 were related to Eastern Roman-Byzanteum period. From a total of 114 human skeletal remains were studied. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of antemortem tooth loss in the skeletal remains also discusses the correlation of these findings with the community's nutritional, cultural and environmental factors. Objective: To compare the nutritional factors and oral status of elders living alone and elders living with their families in Korea.Background: Numerous studies have found that the presence of fewer remaining teeth is associated with decreased nutrient intake; however, there is no study comparing the nutritional status and oral status of elders living alone with that of elders living with family based on a nationally representative sample.Methods: A sample of 2904 individuals who participated in the sixth Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey was reviewed (65-84 years of age). Living status was defined according to the participants' self-reported questionnaire, and a nutrient intake questionnaire was designed as an open questionnaire and used during the face-to-face interviews. The number of existing teeth was used to determine oral status. A complex-sample general linear analysis and multivariate logistic regression analysis were used to evaluate the association between the number of teeth and nutrient intake among elders living with family and elders living alone after adjusting for confounders.Results: Elders living alone were significantly older and tended to have the following characteristics: women, lower household income, lower educational level, poor perceived health status, non-smokers, non-drinkers and lack of physical activity. Elders living alone had a poorer perceived oral health status, had not received an oral examination in the past year, had chewing problems and had fewer existing teeth (P < .05). Elders living with family showed better oral health and nutrient intake status. Participants who had many existing teeth had higher nutrient intake than the participants who had fewer existing teeth.Conclusions: For healthy lives at old age, family support or additional social support for elders living alone should be considered. The aim of this study was to determine dental status and prosthetic rehabilitation in elderly population in relation to socioeconomic factors in Republika Srpska. Material and Methods The study included 262 subjects (133 males and 129 females) aged 65-74 years. Dental status was assessed using DMFT index and its components (D - decayed, M - extracted, F - filled tooth) and analysed in relation to socioeconomic factors: gender, level of education and monthly income. Prosthetic restorations were recorded for both jaws in accordance with criteria of the World Health Organisation. Results The mean DMFT was 27.2. Females had the highest DMFT index score (29.1) while highly educated subjects had the lowest score (22.7). The mean number of missing teeth was 22.7. There were 28.2% edentulous respondents. Significant difference in the number of edentulous persons was recorded in relation to gender, education and monthly income. In total, 16.8% of subjects had functional dentition (≥20 natural teeth). 48.5% and 32.1% of elderly respondents were found to have at least one form of prosthetic restoration in upper and lower jaw, respectively. Complete dentures were the most common prosthetic restorations. Conclusion Socioeconomic factors influenced dental status in elderly population. Removable dentures were more common restorations compared to crowns and bridges.

Introduction. Given the increasing prevalence of metabolic syndrome among the population, the search for ways to treat and prevent major dental diseases in this somatic pathology is of great importance. Purpose of the study. The purpose of this work was to evaluate the effectiveness of the developed treatment and prophylaxis complex in patients with generalized parodontitis in combination with metabolic syndrome. Materials and methods. In in-depth studies, 53 people aged 30-55 years with a diagnosis of "chronic generalized parodontitis" and "metabolic syndrome" took part. The main group of patients in addition to basic therapy received a developed, pathogenetically substantiated therapeutic and prophylactic complex, 2 times a year. Evaluation of the dental status of patients was performed in the initial state, after the first course of prevention at 6 months and in a year. Results. Conclusions. The high clinical effectiveness of the developed complex, including preparations of antibacterial and anti-inflammatory action, reducing cholesterol, reducing vascular permeability, normalizing metabolism, blood circulation and fat metabolism, enhancing immunity and resistance of the organism is shown.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to analyze the influence of dental treatment on the development of osteoradionecrosis (ORN) of the jaw. Methods: This study included the data of 776 patients who underwent 3D-CRT or IMRT because of head and neck cancer. Sex, dental status before and after radiotherapy (RT), tumor site, bone surgery during tumor operation, concomitant chemotherapy, and the development of an advanced ORN were documented for each patient. The patients' dentitions before and after RT were classified into four groups with regard to the number and localization of the remaining teeth. Differences between the patients with ORN and patients without ORN with regard to the teeth's condition before and after RT, and with regard to the extent of dental treatment were determined descriptively. Cox proportional hazards regression to study the association between dentition and the development of ORN. Results: The extent of dental treatment in patients with and without ORN did not differ in a clinically relevant way. The highest risk of developing ORN was observed in patients who had undergone primary bone surgery during the tumor operation (HR = 5.58, 95%CI 2.91-10.7) and patients who had a tumor in the oral cavity (HR = 4.84, 95%CI 1.37-17.11). Conclusions: Based on the results of this study, tumor localization and its required treatment are prognostic factors for the development of ORN. Clinical significance: After implementing a consequent dental treatment scheme, no influence of dentition on the risk of developing ORN could be demonstrated. The combined influence of a family and a state plays an important role in the development of an individual. This study is aimed at the model effectiveness evaluation concerning the development of oral hygiene skills among children living in families (n = 218) and being under the care of a state (n = 229). The groups were created among the children who took part in the study: the preschoolers of 5-7 years, schoolchildren of 8-11 years and adolescents of 12-15 years. During the initial examination, the hygienic status of the oral cavity before and after tooth brushing was evaluated. After that, subgroups were formed in each age group according to three models of hygienic skills training: 1) computer presentation lesson; 2) one of the students acted as a demonstrator of the skill; 3) an individual training by a hygienist. During the next 48 hours children did not take hygienic measures. Then the children were invited for a control session to demonstrate the acquired skills of oral care and evaluate the effectiveness of a model developing the skills of individual oral hygiene. During the control examination, the hygienic status was determined before and after the tooth cleaning, which allowed to determine the regimes of hygienic measure performance for children with different social status and the effectiveness of hygiene training models. Despite development of new methodological approaches there is still a problem of implementation various methods of age estimation at the different geographical regions due to the polyethnicity factor of population, as it is represented at the Transcarpathian region of Ukraine. Objective of research was to to modify and experimentally prove the efficiency of age estimation techniques for children and adolescents adapted to the specifical polyethical conditions of Transcarpathian region. A sample of 69 digital OPGs from the base of University Dental Clinic (Uzhhorod National University, Uzhhorod, Ukraine) of patients aged from 6 to 15 years was used for the research. Inclusion criteria for further analysis include next parameters: absence of congenital disorders of the teeth-jaw system, no fact of premature birth, absence of hypodontia or primary adentia. These parameters were determined by the analysis of medical records of patients whose images were initially selected for research. Age estimation was provided by Demirjian and Haavikko methods. Regression analysis and principles of determination search were used for providing higher correlation between results obtained by Haavikko method and summed maturing score. Due to results of Bland and Altman plot analysis it was found that the bias between chronological age and age estimated with correction formula was 0,03245 with value of standard deviation equal to 0,118. Agreement limits between chronological age and age estimated with correction formula were next: lower agreement limit -0,2134, upper agreement limit 0,2453, lower agreement limit-95%CL -0,2865, lower agreement limit+95%CL -0,1187, upper agreement limit-95%CL 0,1906, lower agreement limit+95%CL 0,2969. Objectives: Oral health is a crucial determinant of quality of life. We aimed to determine oral health condition and factors associated with poor oral status in the adult national population of Qatar.Methods: We used data from the World Health Organization supported STEPS (STEPwise approach to Surveillance) Survey conducted by the Supreme Council of Health, Qatar in 2012. A total of 2,496 Qataris (1,053 men, 1,443 women) answered the national survey. The Rao-Scott Chi-Square test was used to analyze oral health characteristics and multinomial logistic regression to assess risk factors.Results: The self-perceived oral status of approximately 40 percent of respondents was either "average" or "poor" rather than "good." Poor oral status was more often reported by women (OR = 1.93; 95%CI = 1.30-2.80), by older (OR = 3.38; 95%CI = 1.59-7.19) and less educated respondents (OR = 3.58; 95%CI = 2.15-5.96). Other risk groups included people with diabetes (OR = 1.87; 95%CI = 1.24-2.81), smokeless tobacco users (OR = 3.90; 95%CI = 1.75-8.68), or ever tobacco users (OR = 1.66; 95%CI = 1.03-2.67). Oral health status appeared to be independent of diet, BMI status, and history of hypertension. Difficulties and behaviors related to oral health were more frequently reported by women than by men. These included pain (P < 0.001), difficulty chewing (P < 0.001), and discomfort over appearance of teeth (P < 0.001). Participants used toothbrushes, toothpicks, dental floss, and miswak to maintain oral hygiene.Conclusion: Our results provide evidence that oral health remains a public health concern in Qatar. Background. We aimed to compare oral hygiene habits, orodental status, and dental procedures in patients with infective endocarditis (IE) according to whether the IE-causing microorganism originated in the oral cavity. Methods. We conducted an assessor-blinded case-control study in 6 French tertiary-care hospitals. Oral hygiene habits were recorded using a self-administered questionnaire. Orodental status was analyzed by trained dental practitioners blinded to the microorganism, using standardized clinical examination and dental panoramic tomography. History of dental procedures was obtained through patient and dentist interviews. Microorganisms were categorized as oral streptococci or nonoral pathogens using an expert-validated list kept confidential during the course of the study. Cases and controls had definite IE caused either by oral streptococci or nonoral pathogens, respectively. Participants were enrolled between May 2008 and January 2013. Results. Cases (n = 73) were more likely than controls (n = 192) to be aged <65 years (odds ratio [OR], 2.85; 95% CI, 1.41–5.76), to be female (OR, 2.62; 95% CI, 1.20–5.74), to have native valve disease (OR, 2.44; 95% CI, 1.16–5.13), to use toothpicks, dental water jet, interdental brush, and/or dental floss (OR, 3.48; 95% CI, 1.30–9.32), and to have had dental procedures during the prior 3 months (OR, 3.31; 95% CI, 1.18–9.29), whereas they were less likely to brush teeth after meals. The presence of gingival inflammation, calculus, and infectious dental diseases did not significantly differ between groups. Conclusions. Patients with IE caused by oral streptococci differ from patients with IE caused by nonoral pathogens regarding background characteristics, oral hygiene habits, and recent dental procedures, but not current orodental status. Objectives: To analyze the influence of dental treatment on oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in head and neck cancer patients. Materials and methods: This study included the data of 116 patients who underwent radiotherapy (RT) because of head and neck cancer. For each patient, the variables age, sex, tumor site, irradiation technique, dose on the spared parotid gland, concomitant chemotherapy, and denture status were documented. OHRQoL was determined using the OHIP-G14 questionnaire. Patients were divided into subgroups according to denture status: none or fixed partial dentures (none/FPD), removable partial dentures (RPD), and full dentures (CD). OHIP summary scores were determined and tested for clinical relevant differences with respect to the different variables. The association between OHRQol and the variables was assessed using linear regression. Results: No clinically relevant influence on OHRQoL was found for gender, irradiation technique, and chemotherapy. Patients with tumors located in the oral cavity had a significantly higher OHIP score than patients with other tumor sites ( p < 0.001). None/FPD and RPD patients had higher values than those found in a normal population, but did not differ significantly from each other ( p = 0.387). Conclusions: In contrast to tumor site, teeth and type of denture seem to have a limited effect on OHRQoL in head and neck cancer patients. Clinical significance: Prosthetic treatment in head and neck cancer patients do not lead to the same improvement in OHRQoL as found in the normal population. Aim: To determine whether the subjective oral health (SOH) of the Dutch adult population was associated with clinical and demographic variables. Methods: A clinical examination was conducted in a sample of 1,018 people from the Dutch city of ‘s-Hertogenbosch. SOH was measured using the Dutch translation of the short form of the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-NL14). Results: The average score on the OHIP-NL14 was 2.8 ± 5.9 and 51% of the respondents had a score of 0. Dental status was the most important predictor of SOH. Conclusions: The SOH in the Dutch adult population was much better than in groups of adults in Australia, the United Kingdom and New Zealand. Nevertheless, there were important variations in SOH related to dental and socio-economic status.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the developed treatment-prevention complex of dental disease in miners. In experiment 70 white rats were exposed to the impact of unfavorable factors of ore-mining industry (increased dust-content in the air and general vibration) daily during 5 hours over 5 months’ period with simultaneous use of the worked up treatment-prophylactic complex which causes normalization of biochemical parameters in oral liquid, serum and bone tissue of animals. Application of the proposed complex in 56 miners with dust-caused bronchitis and vibration disease during 2 years’ period favored improvement of dental status, improvement hygiene and periodontal indices, biochemical parameters of saliva, reduce of the interval of pH (ΔpH) fluctuations, normalization of number of electro¬phoretic mobility of buccal cell nuclei. The scheme of application of health care complex includes adaptogen "Biotrit C", membranostabilizator "Lecithin D3", complex of vitamins and minerals "Alphabet", Elixir "Lizodent", remi¬neralizing and antiinflammatory toothpastes; this improves the efficiency of dental treatment and reduces relapses.

Objectives: To assess the nutritional status in completely edentulous subjects and to compare with age matched dentate individuals. Materials and Method: The study was carried out in 60 individuals divided into two groups. Group one consisted of 30 edentulous subjects and 30 dentate individuals formed the second group Body Mass Index (BMI), serum albumin and hemoglobin values were analyzed in both the groups. Independent sample t- test was employed to check for the difference between the groups and Pearson′s correlation was done to ascertain the association between the variables within the groups. Results: There was a significant difference in all the biomarkers evaluated in between the groups. The values were negatively correlated with the period of edentulism within the groups. Background. The current stage of individual’s identification includes definition of their dental status. At the same time the implementation of methodology for assessing the level of atrophy of the alveolar part of the mandible with the ability to register specific numerical indicators for dynamic monitoring of destruction of bone tissue is still an open question. Objective. To create the way of testing the effectiveness of methods of dental identification using constant anthropometric indexes and methods of assessing the level of atrophy of the alveolar part of the mandible based on proportional anthropometric indices. Methods. The primary stage of the methods of identification and assessment of the level of atrophy of the alveolar part of the mandible is a digital analysis of digital orthopantomograms of 138 patients who had baseline and repeated X-ray images with a time interval of one to five years. In the work author’s algorithm of calculation was used. Reduction of the level of errors is ensured using the root-mean-square and arithmetic average interim results, which approach the final results to their actual value. Results. Levels of absolute and relative errors decreased with approaching to the calculation of final complex constant and proportional anthropometric indices. This is due to the use in a system the calculation of the root-mean-square values and the proposed principle of the mathematical matrix relations that involves finding of the arithmetic average of the columns and lines of the matrix. Conclusion. Principles of calculation of anthropometric indices of the lower jaw that was proposed by the author provided a solution to the problem of person’s identification with changed dental status, as well as a numerical measure of atrophy of the lower jaw as distant results of the dental treatment.

Introduction. Dental status in people with special needs is generally non satisfactory. Children with special needs have difficulties in maintaining oral hygiene, they require special conditions for dental care and because of previous negative experience they often show emotional vulnerability. Development of oral and dental diseases in these subjects is the consequence of insufficient knowledge about the causes of these diseases, poor eating habits, low level of oral hygiene and inadequate number of visits to dentist. The aim of this study was to determine dental status and the prevalence of dental caries in children with special needs in the institution “Zaštiti me” in Banjaluka. Material and Methods. The study included 82 children (53 boys and 29 girls) with mixed and permanent dentition age 5-15 years. They were divided into four groups according to their diagnosis. The first group included children with combined disorders of speech development and hearing, in the second group were children who had neurological disorders without mental retardation, third group included children with mild mental retardation and fourth group comprised children with moderate mental retardation. For each patient the number of teeth, the presence of caries and restorations, the number of extracted teeth, the presence of residual roots and the presence and number of fixed restorations were recorded. Results. Mean DMFT of all teeth was 9.77. Detailed analysis showed the greatest number of decayed teeth (83.83%), and filled teeth (9.52%) whereas the least number was for extracted teeth (6.65%). The highest percentage of children (79.27%) did not have any class I composite filling or one amalgam filling class I (82.92%). Only one child had a fixed restoration. Conclusion. The status of teeth in children with special needs in the institution “Zaštiti me” in Banjaluka indicated high percentage of carious teeth, small percentage of restorations and extracted teeth, and inadequate oral hygiene.

The aim of the investigation is to study the effect of inhaled corticosteroids and long-acting sympathicomimetics on dental health in asthmatics. Thirty patients, from 20 to 55 years old, participate in the study. D-, M-, F- and DMFT indexes are determined in a 6 months period. All participants fill in a questionnaire. Asthmatics complain most frequently from oral dryness, take frequently sugar and soft drinks and visit irregularly dental practitioners. A significant increase in M-index is found out at the second visit. F-index increases considerably for patients treated with Beclometasone and Formoterol and D-index decreases significantly when treated with Budesonide and Formoterol. DMFT index increases considerably for all patients. Highest values of DMFT index are registered for patients treated with Fluticasone propionate and Salmeterol. Prolonged use of inhaled drugs with greater quantities of lactose leads to more impaired dental status in asthmatics and higher values of DMFT index.

Background & Objective: Oral health problems of chronic renal failure patients can compromise systemic health. The purpose of this study was to investigate the dental and periodontal status of patients on regular hemodialysis (HD) maintenance therapy and the effect of duration of HD on oral health. Methods & Materials: In this historical cohort study 65 HD patients and 65 healthy people were collected as case and control groups. Decayed (D), Missed (M) and Filled (F) teeth, DMFT Index, Plaque Index (PI), Gingival Index (GI) ,and Probing depth (PD) were examined and compared between case and control groups. Also, HD patients were divided into two subgroups based on duration of hemodialysis: 1: three and less than three years and 2: more than three years). In this study all variables were examined and compared between these subgroups. T-test and chi-square and SPSS software were used for statistical analysis. Introduction. A significant change in frequency and characteristics of oral diseases in developed countries has been detected recently. The aim of this study was to determine the dental status of teeth in adults in the eastern region of Republika Srpska and to determine possible difference in the prevalence of dental diseases according to the demographic characteristics. Materials and Methods. The study included 182 respondents aged 35-44 years and 185 respondents aged 65-74 years, selected randomly from four municipalities in the eastern region of Republika Srpska. Dental examinations were conducted according to the standards and criteria developed by the World Health Organization. Dental status, determined by DMFT index, was analyzed according to the gender and place of residence (urban/rural). Results. The mean DMFT index was 20.2 in the age group 35-44 years and 28.5 in subjects aged 65-74 years. The dominant component of the index in both studied groups was the number of extracted teeth. Introduction. Dental caries has been one of the oldest but still one of the most common oral diseases in humans. Even though it has been almost eradicated in developed countries due to increased fluoride use, adoption of proper oral hygiene habits and systematic implementation of preventive programs, caries remained one of leading oral diseases in developing countries. Epidemiological data about the prevalence of caries is very important for prediction of need for dental care, number of dental care providers as well as financial aspect. The aim of this study was to determine dental status and indicate dental treatment need in adults of the municipality of Foca, Republika Srpska (Bosnia and Herzegovina). Material and Methods. The study included 244 randomly selected residents (131 males and 113 females) from the municipality of Foca which were divided into three age groups: 20-29, 30-39 and 40-49 years. Dental status and need for dental treatment were determined in accordance to the criteria and methodology of the World Health Organization. Results. Mean value of DMFT index was 12.7 for the first age group, 16.4 for the second and 20.5 for the third age group of respondents. Dental status may influence food intake. The aim of this review was to summarize the earlier investigations on the association between food intake and dental status. We searched the electronic databases of PubMed and the Cochrane library for articles published until 30 February, 2012. To reach the related published articles, Medical Subject Heading (MeSH) terms of ′oral health,′ ′masticatory performance,′ ′dental status,′ and ′eating′ or ′food intake′ were used. We included all research articles in the English language that (1) had used the random sampling method, and (2) had investigated the association between dental status and nutrient intake in elderly, non-denture wearer individuals, with no systemic illness. The findings of the seven original research articles had a great variation. Four of them supported a strong association between dietary intake and dental status and three of them found that there was no association between these variables. Most investigations found a significant relationship between the oral health status and nutrient intake; however, longitudinal studies were required for a better understanding of the diet-oral health relations.

Background and Objective: Ageing is a bio-cognitive which can be described as a progressive and degenerating process in human. One of the major changes in the elderly is loss of teeth, which can affect on dietary intake and nutritional status. This study was designed to assess the dental health in elderly people in Gorgan, North of Iran. Materials and Methods: This descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted on 400 subjects (211 female and 189 male) aged 60 years and above in two selected health centers in Gorgan-Iran. Data were collected by questionnaire and oral and dental examination. Data was analyzed by using SPSS-13 software and chi-square test. Results: The mean age of the subjects were 66.7+-6.7 Sixty percent of the participants were without natural teeth and forty percent had natural teeth. only 10.5 percent of subjects had complete natural teeth. 19.7 participants had decayed teeth. The mean of decayed teeth was 9.2 (rang 1-28) and filled teeth was 4.8 (rang 1-16) in 12.5 percent of participants. CAO and CAOS epidemiological indices provide significant information for an overview assessment of dental health but can not make a nuanced type of carious lesions and involvement of the need for treatment. EGOHID system of clinical assessment and restoration of carious lesions provide evidence on lesion topography guided us on the degree of dental damage in motivating action supporting our dental health. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the comparative in terms of dental health indices CAO, CAOS and EGOHID system. Materials and methods: The study was conducted on a sample of 122 subjects with a mean age 23.53 years in which data were collected on the type of carious lesion and the type of restoration. Data were collected by clinical examination and observation files recorded according to codes. All patients in the study were informed verbally about the purpose of the study noting their consent. Statistical data processing was performed with SPSS 14.00 for Windows fixing the threshold of statistical significance of p ≤ 0.05. Results and discussion: Comparative analysis of two systems of assessment revealed that significant differences p ≤ 0.05 for the system of assessment of dental status in the system component EGOHID carious lesions, lesion assessment is accomplished underestimated component CS of CAOS index showing an average of 4.42 (± 4.132) compared with EGOHID-C is the index of the cavity showing an average of 10.38 (± 7.484). Conclusion: Data obtained through evaluation of dental caries is higher, providing a concrete image of the orientation dentistry, early diagnosis of dental caries, treatment and hence the technicallity and restorative treatments.

Caries experience dental status, oral hygiene and salivary levels of cariogenic streptococci were examined in the three years prospective study among older preschool children in relation to the dynamics of caries increment and with regard to the educational level of their mothers. Mean caries increment between the second and third year of study did not differ significantly amounting to 0.3 new decayed teeth per year however it was highest among children caries free in the onset of study. Higher caries experience significantly positively correlated with the presence of dental plaque and in the final of study also with the salivary levels of cariogenic streptococci. Mothers of caries free children assigned significantly higher educational level than those of children with tooth decay and on the contrary the proportion of children at need of restorative care was highest among mothers with elementary educational level. The educational level of mothers can be taken as the significant predictor of caries risk in children and as such it can be taken as one of important causes of the inequalities in oral health of children.
