A apropriação do relevo pelos seres humanos, conforme os fins econômicos, tem alterado a dinâmica dos processos da natureza, acarretando a degradação ambiental desenfreada e o uso exacerbado dos recursos naturais, ocasionando o desequilíbrio dos ecossistemas. O presente estudo propõe compreender esses aspectos na prática, analisando os casos da Bacia Hidrográfica do Ribeirão das Três Barras, Capinópolis (Minas Gerais) e um recorte da Bacia Hidrográfica do Córrego da Onça, localizado na Área de Proteção Ambiental do Timburi, Presidente Prudente (São Paulo), Brasil. Ambas são utilizadas para atividades agropecuárias, predominando o manejo inadequado, gerando focos erosivos laminares e lineares, tendo como consequência perda de solos, assoreamento de cursos d’água e diminuição do número de nascentes fluviais. Para impedir processos como estes é necessário preservar os ecossistemas, implementando técnicas de conservação e manejo adequado dos recursos naturais em conjunto com os proprietários rurais.

The aim of this work was to evaluate the probiotic potential in vitro in fermented milk containing Lactobacillus rhamnosus and Lactobacillus plantarum isolated from artisanal Minas cheese from the North of Minas Gerais. The isolated strains of Lactobacillus rhamnosus and Lactobacillus plantarum were inoculated into milk, which was subjected to fermentation. Physical-chemical and microbiological analyzes were carried out to investigate the effects on the beverage after fermentation. For the analysis of protein and ash it was observed that these variables did not show statistical differences between treatments (single effect) and there was no significant interaction between the factors. Fermented milk made from skimmed milk (Fat content 0.5%) was within the established standards for the count of lactic acid bacteria (108 CFU.g-1). The strains tested showed sensitivity to three of the six antibiotics tested, showing moderate sensitivity to ciprofloxacin, and resistance to gentamicin and streptomycin. The lactic acid bacteria were verified in the final product throughout the evaluated storage period, being able to observe the probiotic potential of the elaborated fermented milk.

The constant production of solids in intensive shrimp and tilapia culture can affect the performance of macroalgae when cultivated in an integrated system, and little is known about culture structures that enhance the performance of macroalgae in biofloc systems. The objective of this work was to evaluate different depths of culture structure for the macroalgae Ulva lactuca in an integrated system with Litopenaeus vannamei and Oreochromis niloticus in a biofloc system. The experiment lasted 70 days, with six systems composed of: a 16 m3 shrimp tank, a 3 m3 tilapia tank, and a 3 m3 macroalgae tank, with water recirculation between tanks. Two treatments were carried out, shallow float, with a structural depth of 10 cm, and bottom float, where the depth was kept at 30 cm from the surface. The shallow float resulted in a growth rate of up to 0.95 ± 0.54% day−1, with biomass loss only at the end of the culture due to the high density of macroalgae, decreasing temperature, and increasing solids concentration. The bottom float had biomass loss throughout the culture cycle. The integrated culture of shrimp, fish, and macroalgae is feasible with the use of shallow floats within 10 cm from the surface.

Large-scale medical data sets are vital for hands-on education in health data science but are often inaccessible due to privacy concerns. Addressing this gap, we developed the Health Gym project, a free and open-source platform designed to generate synthetic health data sets applicable to various areas of data science education, including machine learning, data visualization, and traditional statistical models. Initially, we generated 3 synthetic data sets for sepsis, acute hypotension, and antiretroviral therapy for HIV infection. This paper discusses the educational applications of Health Gym’s synthetic data sets. We illustrate this through their use in postgraduate health data science courses delivered by the University of New South Wales, Australia, and a Datathon event, involving academics, students, clinicians, and local health district professionals. We also include adaptable worked examples using our synthetic data sets, designed to enrich hands-on tutorial and workshop experiences. Although we highlight the potential of these data sets in advancing data science education and health care artificial intelligence, we also emphasize the need for continued research into the inherent limitations of synthetic data.

Resumo Este estudo analisa a capacidade de as políticas públicas em saúde disputarem sentido na construção de mundo provocada pelos meios de comunicação e a regulamentação estatal da publicidade infantil de alimentos. Estes anúncios influenciam as escolhas alimentares das crianças, formando um paladar habituado ao consumo de ultraprocessados (prejudiciais à saúde) desde a infância. Por meio de uma abordagem qualitativa, a pesquisa entrevistou gestoras em nível federal para compreender a agenda de fortalecimento da regulamentação da publicidade de alimentos destinados ao público infantil executada ao longo de uma década, que tem o intuito de fortalecer as ações de promoção da saúde e contribuir com a prevenção das doenças crônicas não transmissíveis. A influência da indústria de alimentos, por meio da indústria de comunicação, tem restringido o desenvolvimento de políticas públicas na área de alimentação no Brasil e o tema precisa de participação social pois a lei existe, mas não é aplicada.

This study aimed to analyze the spatial distribution of chikungunya cases in Piauí between 2015 and 2019. This was a spatial ecological study of notified and confirmed cases of chikungunya, with data from the Notifiable Diseases Information System (SINAN) from 2015 to 2019. The X² association test was applied for the bivariate analysis and the spatial analysis was performed from the data treatment to combine with the cartographic base in the free software Qgis (version 3.16.7 Hannover). During this period, 9596 cases and 7950 confirmed cases of chikungunya were reported. The city of Teresina (53.21%) and the health region Entre Rios (58.27%) had the highest records. Females (58.40%), aged between 20 and 34 years (29.63%) and mixed race (50.26%) were the most affected. Regarding education, 56.55% were ignored and, regarding the months of notification, the months of the 1st semester had the highest number of cases (62.8%). Chikungunya cases are concentrated in poles with large population flows. In this way, the identification of the epidemiological profile, as well as its main risk factors, is a way of helping the health system of the entire state in the elaboration of specific control policies for the population most vulnerable to the disease.

Abstract: Melon is one of the most consumed cucurbits and commercially significant cucurbits in the world. It is planted predominantly through seedlings, and seed quality is essential in this process. Among the rapid tests used in seed analysis, the pH testing of exudate has shown promise for several cultivated species. Thus, this study aimed to verify the viability of melon (Cucumis melo L.) seeds through the pH testing of exudate. For this, seeds of the hybrids Premier and Supreme (three lots each) were subjected to germination and vigor tests (first germination count, tetrazolium, accelerated aging, emergence speed index, and emergence). The pH testing of exudate was evaluated using phenolphthalein and sodium carbonate solutions. The results indicated the possibility of classifying the lots into three quality levels for both hybrids, similar to most tests used to assess initial quality. Therefore, the pH testing of exudate was effective in determining the viability of lots of melon seeds and can be conducted with a soaking period of 120 minutes at 25 or 30 °C.

Objective: Evaluate the spirometry pattern of patients who persisted with respiratory symptoms after infection with SARS-Cov-2. Methods: Cross-sectional, observational, retrospective study in a single center, approved by the local Ethics Committee (registration number: 5,120,720). Patients who underwent spirometry due to Post-Covid Syndrome were evaluated to analyze the spirometric pattern presented. The following were collected: exam identification data, sex, age, symptom time, the need for mechanical ventilation, and quality of spirometry, in addition to the following exam parameters: FVC, FEV1, FEV1/FVC, FEV 25-75/FVC, and FEV 75, evaluating the Lower Limit of Normality, pre-bronchodilator and post-bronchodilator values. Results: Data from 72 patients were collected. Of these, 55.5% of patients had spirometry results within normal limits. The most frequent respiratory alteration was obstructive respiratory disorder, present in 29.2% of the patients. Conclusions: The presence of dyspnea in patients with normal spirometry may indicate further evaluation of lung function and other etiologies for dyspnea.

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: To highlight the importance of clinical simulations and simulated laboratories for student training, especially in physical examination teaching. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the gains obtained by medical students in their cognitive and practical performance of physical examinations (abdominal, cardiological, and pulmonary), as well as satisfaction and self-confidence in what they have learned, after concentrated practice developed in a skills and simulation laboratory. DESIGN AND SETTING: A quantitative and quasi-experimental study in which 48 students were evaluated at the Faculdade de Odontologia de Bauru, São Paulo, Brazil. METHODS: A quantitative and descriptive study was conducted with regularly enrolled 2nd year medical students over 18 years of age who had content prior to data collection regarding anamnesis and physical examination remotely taught in a Moodle virtual learning environment. For data collection, the participants were subjected to a concentrated period of skill training (abdominal, cardiological, and pulmonary). Every day after the skill training session, they were subjected to a practical evaluation and completed a theoretical test before and after the practical activities. At the end of all activities, they answered the instrument to assess the simulated practices (self-confidence and satisfaction). RESULTS: Among the 49 students evaluated, positive and significant theoretical and practical gains were identified in all three components (abdominal, cardiological, and pulmonary) (P = 0.000), as well as in the general evaluation (Theoretical 1 and Theoretical 2) (P = 0.000), satisfaction, and self-confidence (P = 0.000). CONCLUSION: Concentrated laboratory practice resulted in positive improvements in students’ physical examination skills.

Abstract Streptococcus canis is a beta-haemolytic, Gram-positive cocci commonly identified on the canine ocular surface under both healthy and diseased conditions. The objective of the study was to determine the prevalence of S. canis on the normal and abnormal ocular surface of a canine ophthalmology referral population in Canada, and to investigate potential clinical aspects that may be associated with its presence. Included were 59 dogs (118 eyes) with unilateral or bilateral ocular disease diagnosed at the time of conjunctival sampling. A real-time PCR specific for S. canis was standardized for use with conjunctival swabs. Total DNA was extracted from 118 samples and used as template for the diagnostic assay. Samples were considered positive if amplification was detected and dissociation temperature matched a positive control. Signalment and other clinical data were also collected at the time of sampling. Of the 118 eyes sampled, 8 tested positive for S. canis (6.8%). No association between the detection of S. canis and breed, cephalic conformation, sex, age, use of ophthalmic antibiotics or other topical medications, ophthalmic diagnosis, use of systemic antibiotics or other systemic medications, or systemic diagnosis was identified. In conclusion, S. canis may be present on the ocular surface of dogs at a higher rate than previously reported. It is suggested that this may be linked to the use of PCR for pathogen detection instead of culture.

In this study, we propose to investigate whether the geometric model and vegetation cover of restinga remnants influences the diversity of ants on the Northern Coast of Bahia. Using Winkler extractors and baits of honey and sardines, the ants were collected from five restinga remnants. Correlations were made between the percentage of soil with vegetation cover, circularity and fractal dimension index and the diversity and richness of ants. Lastly, Kendall correlations and Theil-Kendall regression were performed. The diversity index of ants was not associated with the percentage of soil with vegetation cover. The diversity and richness of terrestrial ants were negatively influenced by the circularity index and positively by the fractal dimension index. The circularity index was inversely proportional, while the fractal dimension index was equivalent to the ant diversity index. The similarity dendrogram showed that areas with less fragmentation had similar myrmecofauna composition. The vegetation cover of the soil does not influence the diversity of ants, but the fragmentation of the areas and the geometric model measured by the fractal dimension index have an influence, being possible that the type of soil, in general, prevents the nesting of a larger volume of species and mask the possibility of finding a closer relationship between these variables.

Introdução/Objetivo: A pandemia do HIV é uma importante e atual questão de saúde pública, sendo uma das principais infecções sexualmente transmissíveis que ainda está associada a alta mortalidade. Assim, a profilaxia pré-exposição (PrEP) é peça chave dentre as estratégias de prevenção combinada. Contudo, discussões sobre saúde sexual estão comumente associadas com preconceito e desinformação. Nesse contexto, o debate recente sobre os novos casos de Monkeypox agravou o preconceito contra a população LGBTQIA+, ao associá-la diretamente a essa comunidade. Assim, o estudo objetivou entender o impacto à saúde sexual das informações sobre Mpox (Monkeypox) nesse grupo, analisando usuários da PrEP no Hospital Universitário Oswaldo Cruz (HUOC). Métodos: O estudo foi desenvolvido no ambulatório de Doenças Infecciosas e Parasitárias do HUOC. Foram incluídos os pacientes maiores de 18 anos, usuários da PrEP. Excluíram-se soroconvertidos no período interconsulta. A coleta foi realizada com o preenchimento de um formulário eletrônico pelos pacientes. Resultados: Foram entrevistados 45 pacientes. Na amostra, a média de idade foi de 36,2 anos, sendo 42 homens cis (93,3%) e 3 mulheres cis (6,7%). Verificou-se, também, que do total, 28 possuíam passado de ISTs, mas apenas 33 usam preservativo na maior parte das relações sexuais (73,3%). Com relação ao conhecimento da doença, percebeu-se que a maioria das pessoas não soube responder ou respondeu erroneamente sobre as vias de transmissão (77,8%), além disso, apenas 13 pessoas (28,9%) souberam responder de forma correta as formas de prevenção contra a doença. A maioria (95,6%) soube reconhecer os principais sintomas da Mpox. Foi percebido, também, que uma parcela considerável (40%) dos entrevistados tiveram receio de praticar relações sexuais após divulgação de noticias sobre a doença, sendo que, do total, 26,7% das pacientes reduziram frequência de relações sexuais. Ademais, verificou-se diminuição no prazer durante ato sexual em uma pequena parcela dos entrevistados (13,3%), e, também, que 28,9% da amostra passou a usar mais preservativo. Conclusão: Notou-se, a partir dos dados obtidos, que o surgimento da monkeypox, bem como da circulação de fake news relacionadas a ela, impactaram na qualidade de vida dos entrevistados, em especial diante da falta de informação sobre a doença, evidenciada pelo desconhecimento de boa parte da amostra com relação à transmissão da doença e às formas de prevenção.

Introdução/Objetivo: No Mundo em 2019, Presume-me que 58 milhões de pessoas tenham a infecção cônica pelo HCV, anualmente ocorram 1,5 milhões de novos casos. A Organização Mundial de Saúde (OMS), tem como meta a eliminação das hepatites virais como ameaça a saúde pública até 2030. Para alcançar os objetivos devem ser adotadas estratégias que explorem novas oportunidades, como o diagnóstico. Dando prioridade ao desenvolvimento de testes diagnóstico de tecnologia simples, que alcance áreas remotas e população de difícil acesso, permitindo orientar as decisões médicas. O uso de Dried Blood Spot (DBS) oferece mais conveniência e simplificação na logística para coleta, armazenamento e transporte. A Região Amazônica, por ter um perfil endêmico para a hepatite C, e ter uma logística de pessoas e insumos feitos por via fluvial foi o cenário ideal para aplicabilidade desse estudo. O objetivo do trabalho é analisar o desempenho de testes para detectar e quantificar a carga viral em amostras de sangue seco em papel filtro em comparação com amostras de plasma de pacientes infectados com HCV. Métodos: Foram analisadas amostras de 67 pacientes, de dois municípios do Amazonas. O protocolo do estudo foi aprovado pelo Comitê de Ética e Pesquisa da FMT-HVD. Para cada paciente foi realizada coleta de 8 mL de sangue venoso e sangue capilar por punção digital impregnando o sangue nos círculos de 1,0 cm de diâmetro (∼80 µL) cada, no DBS. As amostras foram processadas utilizando os protocolos de modo aberto para extração e amplificação do DNA. Resultados: Um total de 67 amostras pareadas de plasma e DBS capilar foram coletadas de pacientes com sorologia anti-HCV reagente e sem uso de tratamento antiviral. Oito amostras não apresentaram amplificação do RNA de HCV e 59 amostras houve a detecção de RNA de HCV em plasma e DBS capilar, resultando em uma concordância qualitativa geral de 100%. Comparando as cargas virais plasmáticas de RNA do HCV e as cargas virais capilares DBS, mostrou o R2 = 0,746. Conclusão: Os resultados mostram que o uso do DBS é satisfatório no diagnóstico molecular da hepatite viral C, apresentando uma forte correlação e alta sensibilidade, além disso o seu uso pode reduzir os custos associados a coleta, armazenamento e transporte.

Introdução/Objetivo: A Organização Mundial de Saúde (OMS) reconhece as Infecções Relacionadas à Assistência à Saúde (IRAS) como um dos principais eventos adversos relacionados ao cuidado do paciente. Estima-se que até 70% das IRAS podem ser evitadas seguindo as medidas de prevenção recomendadas, tendo como objetivo de descrever o impacto da implementação das mudanças proposta pelo projeto colaborativo “Saúde em Nossas Mãos” no controle das IRAS. Métodos: Estudo quase experimental realizado na Unidade de Terapia Intensiva adulto em um hospital filantrópico do Estado de Sergipe no período de setembro de 2021 à maio 2023. Foram avaliadas as Densidades de Incidências (DIs) de três IRAS: Pneumonia Associada à Ventilação Mecânica (PAV), Infecção do Trato Urinário Associada ao Cateter vesical de demora (ITU-AC) e Infecção Primária da Corrente Sanguínea associada a cateter venoso central laboratorialmente confirmada (IPCSL). Uma análise pré intervenção foi realizada com dados de doze meses anteriores ao estudo (setembro de 2021 a agosto de 2022) para determinar as DIs basais. A intervenção seguiu o Modelo de Melhoria Breakthrough Series Collaborative (BTS) seguindo ciclos de PDSA (Plan-Do-Study-Act) para testes e implementações das ideias de mudança relacionadas ao pacote de mudanças previstas em Diagrama Direcionador que continham os bundles de prevenção de cada topografia. Este projeto foi desenvolvido através do Programa de Apoio ao Desenvolvimento Institucional do Sistema Único de Saúde (PROADI-SUS) do Ministério da Saúde, tutorado pela equipe do Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein. Resultados: A linha de base nas DIs de PAV, ITU e IPCSL da UTI antes do estudo, foram: 17,66; 4,61 e 3,65 por mil dispositivos/dia, respectivamente. Ao final dos vinte e um meses do projeto, alcançou-se redução de 95% dos índices de PAV (de 17,66 para 0,71) com adesão ao bundle de prevenção de PAV de 93,38%. Houve redução de 76% da densidade de incidência de ITU (de 4,61 para 1,07) com a adesão de 77,27% ao bundle de inserção do Cateter Vesical de Demora (CVD) e 96,27% ao bundle de manutenção do CVD. Não foi observada alteração na DI média de IPCSL. Conclusão: As ações desenvolvidas através do projeto Colaborativo Saúde em Nossas Mãos, utilizando o Modelo de Melhoria, podem ser efetivas quando há uma adesão aos bundles e engajamento das equipes assistenciais, sendo pilares fundamentais na redução de IRAS impactando na qualidade da assistência e segurança do paciente.

The objective of the study was to report the experience with teaching medical students the approach to children in situations of domestic sexual violence in the Primary Health Care (PHC) context using clinical simulation. The simulation was performed for students attending the fifth semester, during the Child Health module, of the Medicine Course at the Multicampi School of Medical Sciences, Brazil. This activity was developed at the Clinical Skills and Simulation Laboratory of the school in the second half of 2019. A domestic child sexual violence scenario was then developed and executed. The simulation enabled a critical analysis of child violence, of the medical performance, and of how similar situations are conducted in the Primary Health Care context. As it is a complex and challenging scenario, it was possible to identify that the students have difficulties making decisions. The students evaluated the practice as a successful experience. Therefore, the simulation for teaching the approach to children in situations of domestic sexual violence in the PHC context can be a teaching and learning strategy with significant potential for the theoretical and practical consolidation of the theme in question.

O presente estudo trata-se de uma revisão integrativa de literatura que teve como objetivo descrever a produção de literatura científica acerca das condições de saúde da população LGBTQIAPN+ no sistema prisional brasileiro. A busca pelas informações foi realizada na Biblioteca Virtual de Saúde e Google Acadêmico, utilizando os filtros “minorias sexuais e de gênero”, “prisões”, “condições de saúde” e “Brasil”, compreendendo o período de 2018-2023. Após aplicar os critérios de inclusão e excluídos os duplicados, foram selecionados cinco artigos, dos quais emergiram dois temas de análise macro: principais problemas de saúde que impactam a população LGBTQIAPN+ no sistema prisional brasileiro e os principais desafios na execução da Política Nacional de Atenção Integral à Saúde população LGBTQIAPN+ no Sistema Prisional. Os estudos apontam a violação dos direitos das travestis e transexuais ao observar diversos problemas que se destacam no sistema prisional: alta prevalência de infecções sexualmente transmissíveis e doenças crônicas, violação do nome social, a negação de ingresso de roupas e utensílios femininos nos presídios masculinos, a prática de estupro e violência física e psicológica. Apesar dos inúmeros direitos garantidos constitucionalmente pela população LGBTQIAPN+, ainda é notória a discriminação acentuada, invisibilidade e maior vulnerabilidade em saúde no sistema prisional brasileiro.

Resumo Ocorreu um ciclone na costa sul do Brasil entre 30/06/2020 e 01/07/2020, movendo-se do continente em direção ao mar. O sistema foi registrado em modelos numéricos e observações in-situ (boia e navio) desde o dia em que se formou até se dissipar. O objetivo deste trabalho é utilizar os dados coletados durante essa condição ambiental extrema em uma comparação estatística com o modelo atmosférico operacional Global Forecast System (GFS) e uma implementação local do modelo de ondas WAVEWATCH III (WW3), que utiliza o GFS como um dos inputs, para entender as limitações desses modelos. Inicialmente, os resultados mostraram que o sistema próximo à costa sul do Brasil era um ciclone explosivo forte de acordo com a classificação de Sanders e Gyakum (1980). Descobrimos que os modelos GFS e WW3 apresentaram maiores erros em comparação com os dados da boia durante o período de 48 horas de condições meteorológicas explosivas, enquanto para o modelo GFS, os maiores erros ao redor do navio ocorreram após esse período. Os erros do WW3 podem ser explicados pela diferença entre a profundidade da boia e o ponto da grade do WW3, e os erros do GFS nessa localização.

Os hormônios testosterona e cortisol possuem ação antagônica no organismo, sendo a razão testosterona/cortisol usada para apreciar o estado anabólico/catabólico dos jogadores de futebol. Buscou-se avaliar as variações nas concentrações desses hormônios ao longo de uma temporada competitiva de alta densidade. Participaram do estudo 23 atletas do sexo masculino de uma equipe da primeira divisão do futebol nacional no contexto da Copa do Mundo, divididos em titulares e reservas. Coletou-se 7 amostras de sangue durante o calendário de jogos (M0 a M6). Para a análise estatística utilizou-se a ANOVA two way para medidas repetidas seguida do post hoc de Tukey. O presente artigo promove uma análise acerca das emoções frente à percepção cromática do ser humano, tendo como objeto de estudo o automóvel. Para tal fim, além do levantamento bibliográfico, foi feita uma avaliação da percepção emocional do usuário em relação a automóveis por meio da ferramenta Roda das Emoções de Genebra (GEW) coletados dados de 20 pessoas de dois diferentes grupos. Para essa pesquisa, foram utilizadas imagens do automóvel modelo Renegade, da marca Jeep, selecionado a partir de um grupo de foco, editadas e organizadas em diferentes cores. Com base na análise dos resultados, ficou notória a diferença entre as respostas dos estudantes de Design e dos estudantes de outras áreas. Nesse contexto, os discentes do curso de design apresentaram maior variedade na percepção de emoções, em contraposição com os discentes de outros cursos, os quais assinalaram menos opções emocionais dispostas no GEW.

Abstract Extranodal natural-killer/T-cell lymphoma (ENKTL) is a rare and aggressive Epstein-Barr virus related mature T-cell and natural-killer malignancy. Although highly prevalent in South America, few studies covering data from this geographic location have been published. Therefore, this study aims to report clinical characteristics, prognostic factors, and outcomes in a multicenter cohort of ENKTL patients from Brazil. This retrospective, observational and multicenter study included 98 ENKTL patients treated during two decades in Brazil. Data were extracted from the T-Cell Brazil Project database. In our cohort, 59/98 patients (60.2%) were male, with a median age of 50 years. Sixty-two patients (63.3%) had B-symptoms, 26/98 (26.5%) had Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group scale ≥ 2; 16/98 (16.3%) presented extranasal disease and 34.7% (34/98) were advanced-stage (Ann Arbor/Cotswolds III/IV). The median follow-up for the whole cohort was 49 months, with an estimated 2-year overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) of 51.1% and 17.7%, respectively. In early-stage disease (IE/IIE), the median OS was 21.8 months for patients treated with concurrent radiotherapy plus chemotherapy (CCRT-VIPD [etoposide/vp-16, ifosfamide, cisplatin and dexamethasone), 16.2 months for sequential chemoradiotherapy (SCRT) followed by asparaginase-based regimens, and 56.7 months for SCRT followed by CHOP-like (cyclophosphamide, doxorrubicin, vincristine and prednisone) treatments, p = 0.211. CCRT was associated with higher rates of early-mortality, hematological toxicity, and mucositis. Median OS was 8.2 months for patients with advanced-stage disease receiving regimens containing asparaginase compared to 3.2 months for anthracycline-based therapy, p = 0.851. Chemo-radiotherapy (CRT) regimens demonstrated better OS (p = 0.001) and PFS (p = 0.007) than chemotherapy alone. Multivariate analysis revealed anemia, relapsed/refractory (R/R) disease and radiotherapy omission as poor outcome predictors for OS. Lymphopenia and radiotherapy omission adversely affected PFS. Concerning progression of disease within 24-months (POD-24), clinical stage III/IV was a poor outcome predictor. In this real-life Brazilian cohort, ENKTL presented dismal outcomes. Radiation therapy was an independent factor for increased OS and PFS, but CCRT regimens were associated with higher toxicities. Polychemotherapy based on anti-multi drug resistant agents was not associated with survival benefit in either early or advanced-stage disease in our patient cohort.

Abstract Background The groundwork for malaria elimination does not currently consider the potential of Plasmodium zoonotic cycles that involve non-human primates (NHPs) in sylvatic environments. Since vivax malaria is less responsive to control measures, finding Plasmodium vivax infected NHPs adds even more concern. Methods Both Free-living monkeys in forest fragments inside the urban area and captive monkeys from a local zoo had blood samples tested for Plasmodium species. Results In this study, among the Neotropical monkeys tested, three (4.4%), one captive and two free-living, were found to be naturally infected by P. vivax. Conclusion This important finding indicates that it is necessary to estimate the extent to which P. vivax NHP infection contributes to the maintenance of malaria transmission to humans. Therefore, the discussion on wildlife conservation and management must be incorporated into the malaria elimination agenda.
