Abstract

© 2018 The Author(s). In an evidence-based health care environment, healthcare professions require a sustainable research culture to remain relevant. At present however, there is not a mature research culture across the chiropractic profession largely due to deficiencies in research capacity and leadership, which may be caused by a lack of chiropractic teaching programs in major universities. As a response to this challenge the Chiropractic Academy for Research Leadership, CARL, was created with the aim of develop a global network of successful early-career chiropractic researchers under the mentorship of three successful senior academics from Australia, Canada, and Denmark. The program centres upon an annual week-long program residential that rotates continental locations over the first three-year cycle and between residentials the CARL fellows work on self-initiated research and leadership initiatives. Through a competivite application process, the first cohort was selected and consists of 13 early career researchers from five professions in seven countries who represent diverse areas of interests of high relevance for chiropractic. The first residential was held in Odense, Denmark, with the second being planned in April 2018 in Edmonton, Canada, and the final residential to be held in Sydney, Australia in 2019.

Abstract

In this work the adsorption of the antibiotic rifampicin (RP) on the surface of gold (AuNP) or silver nanoparticles (AgNP) was investigated using both surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and surface-enhanced resonance Raman scattering (SERRS) spectroscopies. Such spectra were obtained in the absence and presence of the surface modifier 2-mercaptoethanol (ME) using excitations by laser radiations of 532, 632.8 and 1064 nm wavelengths. The use of different conditions under the presence of ME led to changes in the spectral pattern ascribed to the influence of resonance Raman (RR) effect and distinct chemical interactions of RP with the metallic surfaces. The sensibility of the chromophoric moiety, i.e. a -conjugated orbital, to the adsorption geometries, which can be controlled by surface modifiers, impacts the RR effect. Theoretical models involving RP and metal atoms were obtained from Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations, and used for supporting the vibrational assignment. © 2016 Elsevier B.V. Abstract

Between late austral autumn and early winter, some of the Magellanic penguin Spheniscus magellanicuspopulation foraging on the Patagonian continental shelf move towards the southern Brazilian coast (22–32°S). Many of these vagrant birds wash ashore in very poor health condition. The Santos Municipal Aquarium, Brazil, takes in some of those stranded individuals and provides a programme of rehabilitation. The surviving birds are retained for public exhibition and environmental education. This study describes the husbandry practices and veterinary care for the penguins developed at the Aquarium, including data on survivorship, sex, ontogeny, death rates, reproduction and time in captivity. Most of the received penguins were found in Santos (23·9°S), but there were animals collected between Bertioga and Cananéia (23·7–25·3°S). The highest incidence of stranded animals was recorded in 2008. Most animals were collected during austral winter and no penguins were received in March and April. Most animals were juvenile on arrival at the institution. The average time rehabilitated birds remained in captivity (i.e. the quarantine period plus time on public exhibition) was 294 days, with a longest time of 3681 days. The most common diseases recorded in captivity were bumblefoot and aspergillosis, whereas helminth parasite infestations were the commonest ailment recorded in newly rescued birds. One individual hatched at the Aquarium in 2001 and two others in 2017. As aves sobreviventes são retidas para exibição pública e ações de educação ambiental. Este estudo descreve as práticas de criação de pinguins e cuidados veterinários desenvolvidos no Aquário, incluindo dados sobre sobrevivência, sexo, ontogenia, taxas de mortalidade, reprodução e tempo em cativeiro. A maioria dos pinguins recebidos foi encontrada em Santos (23·9°S), mas também foram coletados animais entre Bertioga e Cananéia (23·7–25·3°S). A maior incidência de animais encalhados foi registrada em 2008. A maioria dos animais foi coletada durante o inverno austral. Não houve registros de pinguins encalhados nos meses de março e abril. A maioria dos animais resgatados era juvenil quando na chegada à instituição. O tempo médio de aves reabilitadas em cativeiro foi de 294 dias, com a mais longa permanência de cerca de 3681 dias. As doenças mais comuns registradas em cativeiro foram o bumblefoot e a aspergilose, enquanto as infestações parasitárias por helmintos foram a doença mais comum registrada em aves recém‐resgatadas. Um indivíduo nasceu no Aquário em 2001 e outros dois em 2017.

64. Land access and livelihoods in post-conflict Timor-Leste: no magic bullets

Abstract

In Timor-Leste, customary institutions contribute to sustainable and equitable rural development and the establishment of improved access to and management of land, water and other natural resources. Drawing on multi-sited empirical research, we argue that the recognition and valorization of custom and common property management is a prerequisite for sustainable and equitable land tenure reform in Timor-Leste. In a four-community study of the relationship between land access and the practice of rural livelihoods in eastern and western districts of Timor-Leste, where customary management systems are dominant, we found different types of traditional dispute resolution, with deep roots in traditional forms of land management and with varying levels of conflict. The article shows how customary land tenure systems have already managed to create viable moral economies. Interviewees expressed a desire for the government to formalize its recognition and support for customary systems and to provide them with basic livelihood support and services. This was more important than instituting private landholding or state appropriation of community lands, which is perceived to be the focus of national draft land laws and an internationally supported project. We suggest ways in which diverse customary institutions can co-exist and work with state institutions to build collective political legitimacy in the rural hinterlands, within the context of upgrading the quality of rural life, promoting social and ecological harmony, and conflict management.

Abstract

Adaptation to new environments can start from new mutations or from standing variation already present in natural populations. Whether admixture constrains or facilitates adaptation from standing variation is largely unknown, especially in ecological keystone or foundation species. We examined patterns of neutral and adaptive population divergence in Populus tremula L.;a widespread forest tree, using mapped molecular genetic markers. We detected the genetic signature of postglacial admixture between a Western and an Eastern lineage of P. tremula in Scandinavia, an area suspected to represent a zone of postglacial contact for many species of animals and plants. Stringent divergence-based neutrality tests provided clear indications for locally varying selection at the European scale. Six of 12 polymorphisms under selection were located less than 1 kb away from the nearest gene predicted by the Populus trichocarpa genome sequence. Few of these loci exhibited a signature of 'selective sweeps' in diversity-based tests, which is to be expected if adaptation occurs primarily from standing variation. In Scandinavia, admixture explained genomic patterns of ancestry and the nature of clinal variation and strength of selection for bud set, a phenological trait of great adaptive significance in temperate trees, measured in a common garden trial. Our data provide a hitherto missing direct link between past range shifts because of climatic oscillations, and levels of standing variation currently available for selection and adaptation in a terrestrial foundation species. © 2010 Blackwell Publishing Ltd.

Abstract

To determine the influence of ingestion of dietary fiber (citrus pectin) in the kinetic disposition of valproic acid, two studies were conducted in adult volunteers. Twelve healthy subjects took single oral doses of 500 mg valproic acid in a form of sodium valproate as coated tablets, on two occasions: under fasting conditions (treatment A) or immediately after ingestion of 14 g citrus pectin (treatment B). In each study, a randomized, single-dose, two-way crossover design was used, and 8 days elapsed between the two trials. Assays were carried out for valproic acid in plasma samples, which were collected from zero to 48 hours after drug administration. The peak plasma concentration (60.52 vs. 55.74 micrograms x ml-1), the time to peak concentration (3.47 vs. 3.91 h), the absorption rate constant (0.12 vs. 0.12 h-1), and the area under the plasma concentration-time curve (1324.0 vs. 1268.5 micrograms x h x ml-1) did not differ significantly between treatments A and B (median, Wilcoxon test). These results suggest that the administration of citrus pectin does not alter the rate and extent of absorption of valproic acid administered as a single dose to healthy volunteers.

93. Rhabdomyolysis: a case study exploring the possible side effect of lipid lowering medication by a HIV positive patient taking a protease inhibitor.

Abstract

This case study explores the incidence of rhabdomyolysis in a HIV positive patient that was taking a lipid lowering drug and a protease inhibitor concurrently while under chiropractic treatment for generalized muscular soreness. Dyslipidemia is a very common problem both in the general and HIV population, with many patients being prescribed lipid lowering drugs. While extremely rare, adverse effects of lipid lowering drugs have been documented to include myopathy such as rhabdomyolysis. It is imperative that chiropractors are aware of the possible adverse side effect of lipid lowering drug therapy in their patients complaining of musculoskeletal pain. It is even more important that chiropractors treating the HIV population are aware of the potential interactions between these medications and protease inhibitors to cause myopathy. Abstract

A simple, rapid and quantitative bioassay method was compared to a gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) procedure for the analysis of ametryn in surface and groundwater. This method was based on the activity of ametryn in inhibiting the growth of the primary root and shoot of germinating letuce, Lactuca sativa L. seed. The procedure was sensitive to 0.01 microgram/l and was applicable from this concentration up to 0.6 microgram/l. Initial surface sterilization of the seed, selection of pregerminated seed of certain root lengths and special equipment are not necessary. So, we concluded that the sensitivity of the bioassay method is compatible with the chromatographic method (GC-MS). However, the study of the correlation between methods suggests that the bioassay should be used only as a screening technique for the evaluation of ametryn residues in water.

Abstract

The spatial distribution of endogenic ore deposits in Portugal suggests structural control by major deep seated structures. Most of the ore deposits are located at or near the intersections of different lineament patterns, especially E-W, NE-SW, NNE-SSW, and N-S trends. From this empirical observation several other areas of apparent interest can easily be selected.
