Objectives: This research was aimed to ensure the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the "Community Integration Scale for Adults with Psychiatric Disorders." Methods: This methodological study was conducted with 170 patients with psychiatric disorders. Data were collected between June 2019 and October 2019. Research data were analyzed with Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin (KMO) analysis, Barlett's sample size test, factor analysis, cronbach's α, correlation analysis, an independent t-test. Statistical analyses were made with IBM SPSS 22 and the Lisrel 8.8 program. Results: This study was conducted with 170 individuals with any of the diagnoses of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. The KMO value of the scale was 0.864, and the Chi-square value was found as χ²: 5722.153. (p<0.001). As a result of explanatory factor analysis, it was determined that there was a five-factor structure. As a result of confirmatory factor analysis, fit indices (χ²/df: 2.013, root mean square errors: 0.077, comparative goodness of fit index: 0.96, goodness of fit index: 0.84, p=0.000) were found to be significant. The scale's Cronbach α=0.92, test-retest correlation of 0.84, and item-total score correlation were found to be high. Occupational therapists support individuals experiencing homelessness in traditional roles, and occupational therapy positions focussed specifically on homelessness appear to be growing. To develop and refine a framework to guide occupational therapy practice and research in homelessness. We developed a framework and refined it through a stakeholder consultation process conducted with 17 international occupational therapy experts using an online survey. In this survey, we presented an initial framework and requested qualitative feedback. We analyzed this qualitative data using content analysis. Stakeholder feedback was categorized into eight recommendations: (1) Revision to the 'four processes'; (2) Emphasizing social justice and systems-level advocacy; (3) Reflecting intersectionality; (4) Emphasizing meaningful activity; (5) Emphasizing peer support; (6) Incorporating a focus on independent living skills; (7) Increasing a focus on an activity for addressing substance misuse; and (8) Acknowledging cognitive and physical health. Each of these recommendations was incorporated into a refined version of this framework. These recommendations and a refined version of the framework are presented in this paper. We have developed and refined a framework aimed at guiding practice and research in occupational therapy in homelessness that will be evaluated in future research. Though a range of frameworks exists for guiding the practice of occupational therapists more generally, this framework represents the first that is focussed specifically on guiding occupational therapy practice and research with individuals who experience homelessness. Background: Various factors affect the community integration (CI) of persons experiencing traumatic brain injury (TBI). To ensure positive outcomes in terms of life at home, social activities, and productive work among persons suffering TBI, it is necessary to understand the factors that facilitate or impede CI. Purpose: To compare CI by looking at demographic and clinical characteristics and determine significant predictors of CI among TBI Nepalese persons. Methods: 120 participants were selected using a stratified random sampling technique. A questionnaire was used to identify the participants' demographic and clinical characteristics, and the Community Integration Questionnaire was used to measure CI. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed for demographic and clinical factors associated with community integration. Results: Using univariate analysis, male, employed, living with family, and independence in performing activities of daily living had significantly higher CI scores than female (t = −4.18, p<.000), unemployed (t = −10.52, p<.000), living with friends (t = −3.30, p<.001), and those with moderate to slight dependence (t = −2.83, p<.005). The multivariate analysis revealed that employment status, living with family, and length of hospital stay were significant predictors of CI among TBI Nepalese persons. Conclusion: Employment status, living with family, and length of hospital stay were significant predictors of CI. These findings suggest that rehabilitation efforts should focus on minimizing hospital stay and promoting both productive and social activities among people surviving TBI. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Community integration (CI) is often regarded as the foundation of rehabilitation endeavors after stroke; nevertheless, few studies have investigated the relationship between inpatient rehabilitation (clinical and demographic) variables and long-term CI. To identify novel classes of patients having similar temporal patterns in CI and relate them to baseline features. Retrospective observational cohort study analyzing (n = 287) adult patients with stroke admitted to rehabilitation between 2003 and 2018, including baseline Functional Independence Measure (FIM) at discharge, follow-ups (m = 1264) of Community Integration Questionnaire (CIQ) between 2006 and 2022. Growth mixture models (GMMs) were fitted to identify CI trajectories, and baseline predictors were identified using multivariate logistic regression (reporting AUC) with 10-fold cross validation. Each patient was assessed at 2.7 (2.2–3.7), 4.4 (3.7–5.6), and 6.2 (5.4–7.4) years after injury, 66% had a fourth assessment at 7.9 (6.8–8.9) years. GMM identified three classes of trajectories: Lowest CI (n=105, 36.6%): The lowest mean total CIQ; highest proportion of dysphagia (47.6%) and aphasia (46.7%), oldest at injury, largest length of stay (LOS), largest time to admission, and lowest FIM. Highest CI (n=63, 21.9%): The highest mean total CIQ, youngest, shortest LOS, highest education (27% university) highest FIM, and Intermediate CI (n=119, 41.5%): Intermediate mean total CIQ and FIM scores. Age at injury OR: 0.89 (0.85–0.93), FIM OR: 1.04 (1.02–1.07), hypertension OR: 2.86 (1.25–6.87), LOS OR: 0.98 (0.97–0.99), and high education OR: 3.05 (1.22–7.65) predicted highest CI, and AUC was 0.84 (0.76–0.93). Introduction: Objective and continuous monitoring of physical activity over the long-term in the community is perhaps the most important step in the paradigm shift toward evidence-based practice and personalized therapy for successful community integration. With the advancement in technology, physical activity monitors have become the go-to tools for objective and continuous monitoring of everyday physical activity in the community. While these devices are widely used in many patient populations, their use in individuals with acquired brain injury is slowly gaining traction. The first step before using activity monitors in this population is to understand the patient perspective on usability and ease of use of physical activity monitors at different wear locations. However, there are no studies that have looked at the feasibility and patient perspectives on long-term utilization of activity monitors in individuals with acquired brain injury. Methods: This pilot study aims to fill this gap and understand patient-reported aspects of the feasibility of using physical activity monitors for long-term use in community-dwelling individuals with acquired brain injury. Results: This pilot study found that patients with acquired brain injury faced challenges specific to their functional limitations and that the activity monitors worn on the waist or wrist may be better suited in this population. Discussion: The unique wear location-specific challenges faced by individuals with ABI need to be taken into account when selecting wearable activity monitors for long term use in this population. Objective: The aim of the study is to identify factors that may predict community participation among adults with lower limb amputation. Design: This study is a secondary analysis of a cross-sectional data set, including 126 community-dwelling adults, ≥1 yr after unilateral transfemoral- (n = 44; mean age = 59 ± 14 yrs) or transtibial-level amputation (n = 82; mean age = 59 ± 14 yrs) seen in an outpatient limb loss clinic. Participation was assessed with the Community Integration Questionnaire. Factors, that is, demographics, comorbidities, prosthesis use per the Houghton Scale, Socket Comfort Score, assistive device use, falls history, and activity level per General Practice Physical Activity Questionnaire were evaluated. Moreover, balance confidence per the Activities-Specific Balance Confidence Scale, mobility per the Locomotor Capabilities Index, fast and self-selected gait speed per 10-meter walk tests, and functionalmobility via Timed Up and Go were also included. Results: Community participation was correlated with several factors (P ≤ 0.050). Stepwise regression of correlated factors found absence of peripheral neuropathy and greater self-reported physical activity, balance confidence, and prosthesis use, as the strongest correlates, collectively explaining 50.1% of the variance in community participation post-lower limb amputation. Conclusions: Findings identify key modifiable factors for consideration in future prospective research seeking to enhance community reintegration and participation among adults living with a unilateral transfemoral- or transtibial-level amputation. Individuals who have experienced incarceration are an underserved population in need of career development to reduce barriers to employment. Given the high rates of disability and health concerns for individuals who have been previously incarcerated, this study explored the relationships between individual health functioning, vocational identity, core self‐evaluations, and community integration. Using structural equation modeling structural regression, results showed that functional difficulties negatively impact vocational identity and core self‐evaluations. Conversely, core self‐evaluations significantly improve community integration and mediate a positive relationship between vocational identity and community integration. Career development activities aimed at core self‐evaluations and increasing meaning in employment may reduce some of the barriers experienced by individuals post incarceration. William (Bill) A. Anthony was a pioneer in the field of psychosocial/psychiatric rehabilitation and recovery. He established the Center for Psychiatric Rehabilitation at Boston University and served as the editor/coeditor of the Psychosocial Rehabilitation Journal (later Psychiatric Rehabilitation Journal). He helped to clarify ideas, principles, policies, and practices that promoted the right and ability of people living with psychiatric disabilities and mental health challenges to aspire to and achieve their own vision of a meaningful life. This introductory article briefly overviews Bill's contributions to psychiatric rehabilitation and recovery of people with mental health challenges and his influence on recent work in this field, a sample of which is presented in the current special section dedicated to him. To conclude, the article overviews this special section, which reports on studies in the United States and elsewhere, addressing supported education, recovery colleges, photovoice to promote community integration, and policy developments in Israel. Impact and Implications: This article summarizes the seminal impact of Bill Anthony's body of work on the field of psychiatric rehabilitation and recovery. Additionally, it traces the broad implications of his vision and contributions to the field, to the four articles presented in the special section, as examples of current work that will lead to future developments built upon his legacy. The COVID-19 pandemic has upended the lives of everyone in the United States, negatively impacting social interactions, work, and living situations, and potentially exacerbating mental health issues in vulnerable individuals. Within the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) healthcare system, two vulnerable groups include those with a psychotic disorder (PSY) and those who have recently experienced homelessness (recently housed Veterans, RHV). We conducted phone interviews with PSY (n = 81), RHV (n = 76) and control Veterans (CTL, n = 74) between mid-May - mid-August 2020 ("initial") and between mid-August - mid-October 2020 ("follow-up"). At the initial period, we also collected retrospective ratings relative to January 2020 ("pre-COVID-19"). We assessed clinical factors (e.g., depression, anxiety, loneliness) and community integration (e.g., social and role functioning). All groups reported worse clinical outcomes after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, PSY and RHV exhibited improvements in depression and anxiety from initial to follow up, whereas CTL continued to exhibit elevated levels. There was little change in community integration measures. Our results indicate that all groups reported increased mental health problems after the onset of the pandemic, but vulnerable Veterans were not disproportionately affected and had better mental health resilience (i.e., for depression and anxiety) as the pandemic progressed compared to CTL. This effect could be due to the availability and utilization of VA services for PSY and RHV (e.g., housing and financial support, medical and mental health services), which may have helped to mitigate the impact of the pandemic.

Objectives: The present cross-sectional study was done to acknowledge the level of resilience, its association with quality of life (QoL), community integration, and demographic/injury-related variables, and identify the determinants that affect resilience among spinal cord injury individuals living in the community. Methods: The data were collected from 108 participants using the convenience sampling method. A demographic/injury-related questionnaire was used to identify the characteristics of the participants. The CD-RISC10, World Health Organization quality of life-BREF (WHOQOL-BREF), and community integration questionnaire-revised (CIQ-R) were used to measure resilience, QoL, and community integration. Association between resilience and independent variables was examined through Pearson’s correlation and Point-Biserial correlation, whereas, univariate and multivariate linear regression analyses were applied to identify the influence of the demographic/injury-related factors that contribute to resilience, and independent t-test and ANOVA were employed to identify the determinants that affect resilience. Results: Almost 78% of participants had a moderate-to-high level of resilience. In multivariate analysis, gender, marital status, and profession were found to be statistically significant. Among these predictors, employment had a higher beta value (β=0.684, P=0.026), which signifies its importance in evaluating resilience. Significant associations were established between resilience, QoL domains, community integration, and demographic variables, which included marital status, duration since the injury, and frequency of going out. Discussion: The present research brings attention to the significance of using appropriate interventions, such as vocational rehabilitation support as well as awareness about the injury to help strengthen resilience and reintegration amongst SCI individuals into their communities. A further longitudinal study is recommended to determine predictive factors of the dynamic nature of resilience over time.

Sometimes a person suffering a mental, emotional, or behavioral health issue won't seek care for fear of others knowing about their personal issues. Historically, some rural communities created safe venues for emotional expression. One example is cowboy poetry, which allowed the cowboy poet to express sadness, disappointment and heartache in a safe environment. There is an opportunity for rural communities to imagine and reimagine safe venues for mental, emotional, and behavioral health; maybe cowboy poetry, maybe other ways to connect. Today, it is crucial for rural communities to do all they can to address mental health in the usual clinic settings, and by creating other safe venues for emotional expression.

Background: Supported accommodation intends to address challenges arising following release from prison; however, impact of services, and of specific service components, is unclear. We describe key characteristics of supported accommodation, including program components and outcomes/impact; and distil best-evidence components. Methods: We conducted a systematic review, searching relevant databases in November 2022. Data were synthesised via effect direction plots according to the Synthesis Without Meta-analysis guidelines. We assessed study quality using the McGill Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool, and certainty in evidence using the GRADE framework. Results: Twenty-eight studies were included; predominantly cross-sectional. Program components which address life skills, vocational training, AOD use, and mental health appear to positively impact criminal justice outcomes. Criminal justice outcomes were the most commonly reported, and while we identified a reduction in parole revocations and reincarceration, outcomes were otherwise mixed. Variable design, often lacking rigour, and inconsistent outcome reporting limited assessment of these outcomes, and subsequently certainty in findings was low. Conclusion: Post-release supported accommodation may reduce parole revocations and reincarceration. Despite limitations in the literature, the findings presented herein represent current best evidence. Future studies should clearly define program components and measure their impact; use analyses which reflect the high risk of adverse outcomes, such as time-to-event analyses; and consider outcomes which reflect the range of challenges faced by people leaving prison. Background: Each individual with schizophrenia experiences life uniquely, despite the sameness in their diagnosis. Understanding their experiences is vital for their better community integration and social work practice. Method: We used the interpretative phenomenological approach. Persons with schizophrenia seeking outpatient services at a tertiary care institute in Bengaluru, India, were recruited through purposive sampling. In-depth interviews were conducted with six participants. Results: Some of the meta-themes and subthemes identified were as follows: (a) perception about self (struggling with the sense of self, desire for normalcy, wanting to be in control of self and desire to live independently), (b) relationship with others (feeling supported by others and feeling rejected by others), (c) coping with consequences of illness (coping with disruptions in personal life and coping with disruptions in family life), and (d) experience of seeking treatment (reasons for seeking treatment, being on medication, and behavior of mental health professionals). The participants tried to find meaning in their lives by making sense of their illness. Family and community can have a significant impact on how persons with schizophrenia perceive their lives. Conclusion: Mental health professionals need to encourage persons' and their families' greater participation in treatment planning and clinical interventions, which will enhance persons integration within the community and will help decrease the feeling of isolation commonly experienced when one lives with chronic mental illnesses. To examine the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on societal participation in people with moderate-to-severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). Cross-sectional retrospective cohort. National TBI Model Systems centers, United States. TBI Model Systems enrollees (N=7003), ages 16 and older and 1-30 years postinjury, interviewed either prepandemic (PP) or during the pandemic (DP). The sample was primarily male (72.4%) and White (69.5%), with motor vehicle collisions as the most common cause of injury (55.1%). Not applicable. The 3 subscales of the Participation Assessment with Recombined Tools-Objective: Out and About (community involvement), Productivity, and Social Relations. Out and About, but not Productivity or Social Relations, scores were appreciably lower among DP participants compared to PP participants (medium effect). Demographic and clinical characteristics showed similar patterns of association with participation domains across PP and DP. When their unique contributions were examined in regression models, age, self-identified race, education level, employment status, marital status, income level, disability severity, and life satisfaction were variably predictive of participation domains, though most effects were small or medium in size. Depression and anxiety symptom severities each showed small zero-order correlations with participation domains across PP and DP but had negligible effects in regression analyses. Consistent with the effect of COVID-19 on participation levels in the general population, people with TBI reported less community involvement during the pandemic, potentially compounding existing postinjury challenges to societal integration. The pandemic does not appear to have altered patterns of association between demographic/clinical characteristics and participation. Assessing and addressing barriers to community involvement should be a priority for TBI treatment providers. Longitudinal studies of TBI that consider pandemic-related effects on participation and other societally linked outcomes will help to elucidate the potential longer-term effect the pandemic has on behavioral health in this population. The aim of this study was to identify the associated factors with lower self-esteem and restriction in community reintegration in SpA patients. This study was a cross-sectional study including SpA patients (ASAS criteria) aged 18–50 years. The level of self-esteem was assessed using the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES). The Reintegration to Normal Living Index (RNLI) evaluated the degree of reintegration to normal social activities. Anxiety, depression, and fibromyalgia were screened by the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS)-A, HADS-D, and FiRST, respectively. Statistical analysis was performed. A total of 72 patients were enrolled (sex-ratio = 1.88), with median (IQR) age of 39 years (28.25–46). Median (IQR) disease duration was 10 (6–14) years. Median (IQR) BASDAI and ASDAS were 3 (2.1–4.7) and 2.7 (1.9–3.48), respectively. Anxiety symptoms were screened in 10% of SpA patients, depression in 11%; and fibromyalgia in 10%. Median (IQR) RSES and RNLI scores were 30 (23.25–34), and 83 (53.25–93.25), respectively. Multivariate regression analysis identified the domain (work) of pain interference, VAS pain, HAD anxiety, PGA, marital status, and morning stiffness as factors associated with lower self-esteem. Restriction in the reintegration community was predicted by the presence of IBD, VAS pain, FIRST, deformity, enjoyment of life, and HAD depression. Pain intensity and interference, deformities, extra-articular manifestations, and deterioration of mental health were associated with low self-esteem and severe restriction in community reintegration among patients with SpA rather than inflammatory parameters. Introduction: Qualitative knowledge in health education is increasingly essential for critical, reflective and interdisciplinary training for graduates of the health field, as well as the necessary articulation of the use of qualitative research methodology grounded in the concepts of human and social sciences. Objective: to expose the importance of knowledge and qualitative methodological elements in health training in the Brazilian Amazon scenario. Method: This is an experience report with the use of qualitative research methodology, which took as reference the curricular component of Interaction on a Real Basis (IBR), of the three undergraduate courses in the area of health (collective health, pharmacy and interdisciplinary), taught during the first four semesters by the Institute of Collective Health (ISCO) of the Federal University of Western Pará (UFOPA), in the Brazilian Amazon region. Results: The experience produced through the use of qualitative research methodology in this curriculum component, occurred in activities developed in the classroom space and in the field of practice (Amazonian communities). Among the methodological elements of qualitative research used are: observation, ethnography for the production of listening, bonding with people from the community investigated, recognition of culture and identity, ethnic and linguistic diversity in scenarios of socioeconomic inequality that coexist in these territories, urban and rural spaces, indigenous communities, quilombolas and riverine communities. The use of the methodological elements of qualitative research enabled the development of qualitative scientific knowledge in health education, through conceptual, textual and contextual construction. In addition, the experiences produced with the communities of the Brazilian Amazon region, unveil the multiplicity of ways of living and doing health, allowing a broad field for qualitative teaching in health. Conclusions: The knowledge of qualitative research is essential to support the teaching-learning process articulated with the field practice, aiming at the construction of new perspectives and methodological paths that go beyond the disciplinary boundaries of the health field. Objectives The United States has seen increasing shifts toward home- and community-based services (HCBS) in place of institutional care for long-term services and supports. However, research has neglected to assess whether these shifts have improved access to HCBS for persons with dementia. This paper identifies HCBS access barriers and facilitators, and discusses how barriers contribute to disparities for persons with dementia living in rural areas and exacerbate disparities for minoritized populations. Methods We analyzed qualitative data from 35 in-depth interviews. Interviews were held with stakeholders in the HCBS ecosystem, including Medicaid administrators, advocates for persons with dementia and caregivers, and HCBS providers. Results Barriers to HCBS access for persons with dementia range from community and infrastructure barriers (e.g. clinicians and cultural differences), to interpersonal and individual-level barriers (e.g. caregivers, awareness, and attitudes). These barriers affect the health and quality of life for persons with dementia and may affect whether individuals can remain in their home or community. Facilitators included a range of more comprehensive and dementia-attuned practices and services in health care, technology, recognition and support for family caregivers, and culturally competent and linguistically accessible education and services. Discussion System refinements, such as incentivizing cognitive screening, can improve detection and increase access to HCBS. Disparities in HCBS access experienced by minoritized persons with dementia may be addressed through culturally competent awareness campaigns and policies that recognize the necessity of familial caregivers in supporting persons with dementia. Objective: Successful community integration involves active participation in the community, broadly defined as having independence, relationships, and engagement in meaningful activities. This review aims to identify the literature focusing on community integration of individuals with stroke aged 18 years and older in the community over the past two decades. Methods: This review will be based on the methodological framework given by Arksey and O'Malley (2005). We will include studies from SCOPUS, PubMed, Web of Science, Google Scholar, CINAHL, EBSCO, ClinicalKey, Wiley Online, ProQuest, and Cochrane Library databases published from January 2000 onwards. Both quantitative and qualitative data will be analyzed separately to identify various assessments, interventions, and factors that influence the community integration of individuals with stroke. Conclusion: This scoping review will help to explore studies focusing on community integration among individuals with stroke aged 18 and older living in the community. Objective: Experiencing a life of meaning is considered fundamental to "what makes life worth living," yet investigation of life meaning among persons with lived experiences of homelessness is lacking. This study seeks to understand life meaning among formerly homeless residents of permanent supportive housing through an examination of its association with social context. Method: Data were collected through interviews with 383 persons with experience of chronic homelessness who were provided permanent supportive housing (PSH). Recruitment of participants occurred through partnerships with 26 providers of PSH in Los Angeles County, California. Multivariate logistic regression models were employed to understand association of life meaning with hypothesized social contextual variables, controlling for demographic and background characteristics. Results: Community integration and sense of belonging were significantly and positively associated with life meaning, consistent with findings from previous research involving persons not identified as experiencing homelessness. Conclusions: Findings suggest opportunities for service providers to facilitate life meaning among residents of supportive housing. Los Angeles Countys Office of Diversion and Reentry (ODR) has removed over 3800 people from the largest jail system in the country. Across various diversion programs, ODRs fundamental goal is to provide permanent, lifetime care for each diverted person. This article describes ODRs various diversion programs, and elucidates the types of elaborate clinical and court-related interventions that are necessary to remove persons with serious mental disorders from jail custody. As Los Angeles continues to build the necessary community-based continuum of mental health care, ODRs model proves that thoughtfully removing persons with serious mental disorders from jail is possible and necessary for the health of both patients and community.

Homelessness is a major public health problem, and serious mental illness (SMI) is highly prevalent in the homeless population. Although supported housing services-which provide permanent housing in the community along with case management-improve housing outcomes, community integration typically remains poor, and little is known about the underlying determinants of poor community integration postresidential placement. The general SMI literature has indicated that motivational and cognitive ability factors are key determinants of successful community integration, which provides a foundation for examining this issue. This study evaluated whether interview- and performance-based assessments of motivation, nonsocial and social-cognitive ability, and psychiatric symptoms were associated with community integration indices in 2 samples of homeless veterans either with (N = 96) or without (N = 80) a psychotic disorder who had recently been admitted to a supported housing program but who had not yet attained housing. Motivation indices, including experiential negative symptoms and defeatist performance attitudes, stood out as the most robust correlates (rs = -.30 to -.69) of community integration across both samples, particularly for social role participation. Demographics, general psychiatric symptoms, and nonsocial cognition showed generally weak relations with community integration, though social cognition showed a few relations. The consistent findings across samples point to the importance of motivational factors for understanding the determinants of poor community integration in this complex population. Further, interventions that target motivational challenges may have widespread usefulness for enhancing community integration outcomes beyond obtaining housing. Background: Despite policies promoting transport inclusivity, persons with disabilities in South Africa experience difficulties when accessing public transport. Poor community mobility hampers community integration and participation in occupations outside the home. This article describes the psychosocial community mobility experiences, of stroke survivors using wheelchairs in a town in the Western Cape province of South Africa Method: The study used a descriptive qualitative design. The study population were community dwelling stroke survivors, from Worcester, using wheelchairs. Data was collected from eight participants through semi-structured telephonic interviews. Inductive thematic analysis was used. Findings: The four themes derived from the data were: Freedom of movement (My power chair, my Ferrari'), Social anxiety (People stare at you like they do not have a heart), Dependency (I must dance along to his fiddle), and Social isolation (You feel done in, dejected). Participants identified wheelchairs, private vehicles, and mini-bus taxis as modes of community mobility. Conclusion: When transport barriers prevent dignified, spontaneous community integration negative psychosocial consequences (social anxiety, dependency, and social isolation) followed. Community mobility barriers hampered participants' ability to participate in meaningful occupations and left them isolated. Occupational therapists should take cognisance of the community mobility challenges wheelchair users might experience and implement intervention strategies to mediate these. Implications for practice • Community mobility is essential to perform occupations outside the residential setting and must be included in occupational therapy assessment and intervention strategies. • Occupational therapists can empower individuals with mobility impairments with the life skills to manage psychological challenges caused by accessing public transport and decreased community mobility. • Occupational therapy intervention for wheelchair users accessing public transport should include effective, appropriate transfer strategies to embark and disembark from minibus taxis. • In certain circumstances the occupational therapist should consider the possibility of a motorised wheeled mobility device to facilitate community integration. Objectives: The present cross-sectional study was done to acknowledge the level of resilience, its association with quality of life (QoL), community integration, and demographic/injuryrelated variables, and identify the determinants that affect resilience among spinal cord injury individuals living in the community. Methods: The data were collected from 108 participants using the convenience sampling method. A demographic/injury-related questionnaire was used to identify the characteristics of the participants. The CD-RISC10, World Health Organization quality of life-BREF (WHOQOLBREF), and community integration questionnaire-revised (CIQ-R) were used to measure resilience, QoL, and community integration. Association between resilience and independent variables was examined through Pearson's correlation and Point-Biserial correlation, whereas, univariate and multivariate linear regression analyses were applied to identify the influence of the demographic/injury-related factors that contribute to resilience, and independent t-test and ANOVA were employed to identify the determinants that affect resilience. Results: Almost 78% of participants had a moderate-to-high level of resilience. In multivariate analysis, gender, marital status, and profession were found to be statistically significant. Among these predictors, employment had a higher beta value (β=0.684, P=0.026), which signifies its importance in evaluating resilience. Significant associations were established between resilience, QoL domains, community integration, and demographic variables, which included marital status, duration since the injury, and frequency of going out. Discussion: The present research brings attention to the significance of using appropriate interventions, such as vocational rehabilitation support as well as awareness about the injury to help strengthen resilience and reintegration amongst SCI individuals into their communities. Background: Recovery-oriented programs provide individuals with opportunities for well-being through community integration processes that enhance the degree to which individuals could live, work, and recreate in their community. The current evaluation assessed how tenants experience their home environment after the modernization of Homes for Special Care (HSC) to Community Homes for Opportunity (CHO) in Southwest Ontario, Canada. Our study identifies existing policies and practices that could interfere with or promote the modernization process. Methods: We applied ethnographic qualitative techniques to purposefully recruit 188 participants with severe mental illness from 28 group homes. Focus groups were conducted at three time points, i.e., at pre-implementation/Baseline/Time I – spring 2018; Transition/Time II – fall 2018, and Final/Time III – winter 2019. Results: Study findings suggest that the transition of HSC to CHO supports activities that empower tenants towards personal growth and development. Participants were largely satisfied with the support they were getting in relation to the program-related services. Tenants disclosed that their quality of life and well-being had been enhanced through participating in the program, and that their social interaction and support for each other had also improved. Most tenants demonstrated autonomy in terms of personal and financial independence. The enhanced financial support for tenants did not only improve their quality of life, but also helped to raise their purchasing power, decision making, sense of responsibility and accountability towards healthy spending of their resources. Despite tenants' good impression about the CHO, some still encountered problems and provided suggestions to further improve the program. Home- and community-based services (HCBS) facilitate community living for older adults and persons with disabilities, but limited awareness of HCBS is a significant barrier to access. Social exposure is one potential conduit for HCBS knowledge. To understand the general population's social exposure to HCBS—that is, knowing someone who has used HCBS (including one's self)—we fielded a survey item with a nationally representative panel of U.S. adults. An estimated 53% of U.S. adults reported not knowing anyone who had used HCBS. Exposure rates were low across specific HCBS types (6%–28%). Women had greater exposure than men for eight of the 11 HCBS. We also found differences by age, racial/ethnic identity, rurality, education, and income. Increasing the general public's awareness of HCBS may facilitate access when services are needed, enhance readiness for aging in place, and increase the visibility and inclusion of older adults, persons with disabilities, and caregivers. Frailty is a deficit accumulation in physical, psychological and social domains. Correlates of frailty were explored among formerly incarcerated, homeless women (N = 130, Mage = 38.9). Significant correlates of physical frailty were age, years homeless, prior violence, witnessing less violence, drug dependence, PTSD symptoms and tangible support. Significant correlates of psychological frailty were age, years homeless, witnessed violence, jail time, divorced less, drug use/dependence, prison time, methamphetamine use, and bodily pain. Significant correlates of social frailty were drug use, emotional regulation, and daily alcohol use. Reentry interventions are needed for formerly incarcerated, homeless women who experience physical, psychological and social frailty.

Background Aphasia, the most common language disorder secondary to stroke, has been associated with increased mortality, longer hospitalization and rehabilitation times, worse performance in daily activities, increased financial burden, and short- and long-term complications. Aphasia can negatively impact functional communication skills, including social networks, social activities, relationships with other people and social support. Objective To evaluate patients with poststroke aphasia in their respective residences to investigate potential predictors of functional communication. Methods The prospective cohort included patients with poststroke aphasia aged 18 years or older who resided in the city of Salvador, Northeastern Brazil. Following discharge from the Stroke Unit (SU), the individuals themselves, or their guardians, were contacted by telephone to schedule a home visit no less than three months after discharge. At baseline, sociodemographic and clinical data were collected, in addition to the scores on the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) and modified Barthel Index (mBI). The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association Functional Assessment of Communication Skills for Adults (ASHA FACS) was applied at the patients' homes. Multivariate linear regression was employed using the total score on the ASHA FACS as the outcome of interest. Results A multivariate analysis of the associated factors identified using the linear regression revealed that only functional capacity (as assessed by the mBI) upon discharge from the SU remained as an independent predictor of functional communication performance (β = 0.042; 95% confidence interval [95%CI] = 0.013–0.071; p = 0.002). Conclusion The functional capacity to perform daily activities, evaluated upon discharge from a stroke unit, was identified as a potential predictor of functional communication performance, regardless of the time elapsed after the stroke.

This study evaluated the impact of baseline injury characteristics and one-year functional level on the 10-year community integration outcomes for working-age patients with moderate-to-severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). Patients aged 16–55 and diagnosed with moderate-to-severe TBI within 24 h of injury were eligible for the study. Multivariable hierarchical linear regression was utilized to assess the impact of baseline characteristics and one-year functional measures on the mean Community Integration Questionnaire (CIQ) scores 10 years after injury. Of 133 original study participants, 97 survived 10 years, and 75 were available for this study. The mean total CIQ score changed positively from one to 10 years post-injury, from 18.7 (±5.5) to 19.8 (±4.8) (p = 0.04). The results suggested that age (β = −0.260, p = 0.013), FIM-Cognitive subscale (β = 0.608, p = 0.002), and the bodily pain subscale (BP) (β = 0.277, p = 0.017) of the SF-36 were significantly associated with the mean CIQ scores. In conclusion, this study demonstrated improved community integration from one to 10 years in a sample of working-age patients with moderate-to-severe TBI. The findings also showed that age, cognitive function, and bodily pain were significant predictors of long-term community integration, suggesting post-acute rehabilitation should focus on factors related to long-term risk and protective factors to improve long-term outcomes. Mobile sensing applications that collect active, Ecological Momentary Assessment data, and passive, Global Positioning System data provide reliable, longitudinal assessments of community integration. Ensuring their acceptability by vulnerable populations is warranted. Acceptability‐related perceptions of a mobile sensing application were gathered via focus groups with homeless‐experienced Veterans with serious mental illness (n = 19) and individual interviews with providers (n = 5) to inform subsequent application tailoring and testing. Rapid assessment generated structured summaries and matrix analyses integrated participant data. Active data collection was deemed noninvasive, with more concerns of passive data "ending up in the wrong hands." Providers recommended clear descriptions and promotion of choice to navigate privacy concerns and guardedness. Participants felt the application possessed clinical value for enhancing patient‐provider interactions and community integration efforts. Overall, participants found application features acceptable and expressed Veterans' willingness to engage in research using mobile sensing technology. Objective: To understand barriers and facilitators to engaging in community activities for increasing social connectedness among recently psychiatrically hospitalized veterans, a population at elevated risk for suicide. Method: We completed 30 semistructured qualitative interviews with veterans within 1 week of discharge from inpatient psychiatric hospitalization. Our interviews focused on understanding past and current barriers, facilitators, and needs for engaging in community activities after psychiatric hospitalization. Data were analyzed using a modified grounded theory approach. Results: Veterans shared feeling a lack of belonging and discussed several barriers to community engagement including lack of self-confidence, limited knowledge of opportunities, and negative expectations. Veterans identified several ways to facilitate engagement in community activities such as centralizing information on community activities and providing active support posthospitalization. Conclusions and Implications for Practice: Veterans by and large valued community and the role of community activities for increasing social connectedness. However, more active intervention for supporting engagement in community activities appears necessary to facilitate connection posthospitalization. Impact and Implications: Engaging in community activities may be a helpful strategy to help veterans increase social connectedness after psychiatric hospitalization, a critical period for suicide risk. Veterans shared several barriers and facilitators that impact their future and current engagement in community activities. Objective: The recovery paradigm in the context of serious mental illnesses pertains to several characteristics of community functioning, adjustment, and integration, among other constructs. Additional rating scales would be beneficial for measuring various facets of community functioning for research that is recovery oriented as opposed to symptom focused. The Community Navigation Scale was developed as part of the Opening Doors to Recovery project to address several aspects of navigating community resources.Methods: After item development, the 21-item Community Navigation Scale was used across two studies with 340 participants who had serious mental illnesses. Factor analysis revealed three potential factors, and subscales were computed.Results: The social and physical well-being subscale (seven items, Cronbach's α=0.82) addressed community involvement, volunteering, finding enjoyable activities, and engaging in positive health behaviors. The accessing external resources subscale (nine items, Cronbach's α=0.80) tapped one's ability to obtain needed resources, ranging from medications to housing and from small appliances to classes in the community. The home and self-maintenance subscale (five items, Cronbach's α=0.73) measured abilities around shopping, cooking, cell phone use, house cleaning, and personal grooming and hygiene. Initial validity of the subscales was suggested through correlations with the Multnomah Community Ability Scale (r=0.65, 0.55, and 0.41 for social and physical well-being, accessing external resources, and home and self-maintenance, respectively).Conclusions: The Community Navigation Scale assesses dimensions of community functioning among persons with serious mental illnesses and may add to the array of research and clinical measures pertinent to recovery outcomes. To assess whether meeting criteria for community ambulation and ambulatory self-confidence on discharge from inpatient rehabilitation are associated with participation in community activities. Prospective longitudinal observational study design. Participants were assessed within 48-hours of discharge on ability to complete tasks reflective of community ambulation (walking 315 m, ascending/descending three stairs, a ramp, and a street curb and walking at 0.44 m/s) and ambulatory self-confidence. At 8 weeks post-discharge frequency of participation in domestic, leisure/work and outdoor activities was measured using the Frenchay Activities Index (FAI). Multivariable regression analysis determined factors associated with total and outdoor FAI score. Seventy-four of 79 participants were followed up at 8 weeks post-discharge. Meeting all ambulation criteria was positively associated with FAI outdoor score (β = 1.85, 95%CI 0.01–3.69, p = 0.049). Ambulatory self-confidence was positively associated with FAI outdoor score (β = 0.03, 95%CI 0–0.05, p = 0.032) and FAI total score (β = 0.05, 95%CI 0–0.1, p = 0.040). Age (β= −0.22, 95%CI −0.36 to −0.08, p = 0.003) and living alone (β = 3.36, 95%CI 0.10–6.61, p = 0.044) were associated with FAI total score. Capacity to meet ambulation criteria and ambulatory self-confidence are modifiable factors that could be targeted during rehabilitation to improve participation in community activities. Meeting community ambulation criteria and confidence with walking on discharge from inpatient rehabilitation are positively associated with performance of outdoor community activities 8 weeks after discharge. Capacity to meet community ambulation criteria and ambulatory confidence may be useful measures for rehabilitation teams to consider when discharging patients home. Meeting ambulation criteria and ambulatory confidence are modifiable factors that could be addressed through targeted therapy to improve community integration following hospitalisation. Abstract Background Earthquakes are global natural disasters and can cause loss of property, livelihood and affect human health. A 5.4 magnitude earthquake, the Pohang earthquake, occurred in South Korea in 2017. In this study, based on a health-related quality of life (HRQOL) conceptual model, we examined the HRQOL and its associated factors among older adults who had experienced the earthquake. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted with a quota sample of 312 older adults living in eight villages of a district that was the most damaged area during the Pohang earthquake. Data were collected from January 15–March 19, 2019, via face-to-face interviews using structured questionnaires. Structural equation modeling was performed to explore the associations among depression, posttraumatic stress symptoms, community resilience, social support, disaster preparedness, and HRQOL. Results The mean age of the participants was 77.93 ± 6.11 years. HRQOL scores were 49.85 ± 18.07 (physical health), 50.16 ± 18.75 (psychological health), 61.93 ± 19.20 (social relations), and 49.53 ± 16.37 (environment). Purpose: This scoping review explores the many benefits of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) on veterans and first responders, focusing on physical health improvements, psychological benefits, and social integration. The purpose is to synthesize existing literature to identify research gaps and suggest directions for future studies. By examining both qualitative and quantitative research, this review seeks to show the utility of BJJ as a therapeutic modality option and propose it as a comprehensive intervention for enhancing the overall well-being of veterans and first responders. Methods: PubMed and Google Scholar searches were conducted to capture a broad range of studies involving BJJ with veterans or first responders. This review adheres to the PRISMA-ScR guidelines, focusing on studies discussing physical, mental, and social outcomes. Results: The initial search yielded numerous qualitative and quantitative studies. This review categorizes the findings into themes of physical health improvements, psychological benefits, and social integration, highlighting the variability and scope of the existing literature. Conclusions: The review highlights the need for well-structured research to substantiate BJJ's therapeutic benefits. It recommends areas for in-depth exploration in future systematic reviews or primary studies, especially longitudinal studies on BJJ's effects and specific therapeutic contributions. Application in Sport: For coaches and trainers, integrating BJJ into programs for veterans and first responders enhances physical fitness and mental health. BJJ improves cardiovascular health, strength, and endurance and reduces PTSD, depression, and anxiety symptoms. Individuals with serious mental illnesses (SMIs) face safety risks related to their mental health conditions that are often compounded by experiences of trauma, victimization, residence in impoverished neighborhoods, and histories of homelessness. Stigma and safety challenges significantly impact community integration for individuals with SMIs, particularly women, who often bear a disproportionate burden of vulnerability, gender-based stigma, violence, and other inequalities. This study investigates how women with SMIs engage in the meaning-making of their safety and stigma experiences that, in turn, influence their community integration. From a large multi-site study exploring community experiences of racially/ethnically diverse participants with SMIs, a subsample of 28 cis and trans-gender women, who reported experiencing gendered stigma and a lack of safety, were chosen for the current study. The interviews were analyzed using modified principles of Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) to understand how women with SMIs made meaning of their safety and stigma encounters in their families, communities, and neighborhoods. IPA analysis resulted in the emergence of themes within a broad category of safety that represented participants’ meaning-making about their physical safety and stigma experiences. Specifically, we used the broad themes from an existing framework of safety called ‘Navigating Safety’ model as sensitizing concepts for our analysis. Physical and psychological aspects of safety for this study were experienced in tandem whereby the women made sense of how their experiences of a lack of physical safety in multiple contexts shaped their sense of self, internalized stigma, and their social relationships. Within the broad theme of physical safety, participants described unsafe neighborhoods, exposure to domestic and intimate partner violence, and vulnerability to sexual violence. Additionally, under psychological safety, we identified how gender-based norms, race and ethnicity, sources of stigma (internalized, familial, and societal), and social isolation contributed to their mental health and social relationships (particularly with family). These findings highlight how the compounding influence of the intersection of multiple stigmatized identities exerts safety challenges on the lives and community experiences of women with SMIs. Focusing on access and affordability of appropriate gender-responsive resources for women, including trauma-informed care, could reduce hospitalizations, mental health symptoms, and stigma so they can safely integrate into their communities. Developed democracies are settling an increased number of refugees, many of whom face challenges integrating into host societies. We developed a flexible data-driven algorithm that assigns refugees across resettlement locations to improve integration outcomes. The algorithm uses a combination of supervised machine learning and optimal matching to discover and leverage synergies between refugee characteristics and resettlement sites. The algorithm was tested on historical registry data from two countries with different assignment regimes and refugee populations, the United States and Switzerland. Our approach led to gains of roughly 40 to 70%, on average, in refugees' employment outcomes relative to current assignment practices. This approach can provide governments with a practical and cost-efficient policy tool that can be immediately implemented within existing institutional structures.

Minimal general knowledge of the quality of life (QoL) of people with intellectual disabilities and mental health problems (ID/MHP) in Serbia exists at present. The outcomes of the deinstitutionalisation process of these groups, which began in 2015, are very questionable—many individuals have faced challenges, and very few have been deinstitutionalised to date. The purpose of this study was to determine the level of quality of life in the domain of social belonging/community integration, the differences in this domain between persons with ID/MHP living together in institutional residential arrangements and community settings, particularly in supported housing, and the differences in the same domain relating to the service provider (governmental/state‐run or non‐governmental sector). The results of the study indicate that the level of social belonging for this specific population is low, especially on indicators such as belonging to civic or community clubs or organisations, participating in events in the local community, and establishing friendships and emotional relationships. Users of services provided by the non‐governmental sector show slightly higher scores in this domain compared to institutionalised users and users in supported housing. The organisational culture based on institutionalism is transferred to community services, leading to an inability to fulfil the basic principles of proclaimed deinstitutionalisation. The recommendations provided should enable the basing of support services for persons with ID/MHP on the principles of deinstitutionalisation while respecting their rights and facilitating their participation in local communities. Objective: To explore older persons’ perceptions of the impact of COVID-19 restrictions on participating in community activities after discharge from inpatient rehabilitation. Methods: Mixed-methods study design. Participants were older adults who were discharged home following inpatient rehabilitation. Interviews were conducted with 70 participants, with a variety of diagnoses, 8 weeks after discharge from inpatient rehabilitation. Frequency of participation in domestic, leisure/work and outdoor activities was measured using the Frenchay Activities Index (FAI). Qualitative analysis was completed using qualitative content analysis and triangulated with FAI scores. Results: In all, 70 older adults (mean age: 73.0 years, SD: 9.9; 59% female) participated in the study. The overarching theme was that participants felt socially isolated following discharge from rehabilitation, with COVID-19 restrictions increasing perceptions of social isolation and complicating their return to participating in community activities. The four categories informing the overarching theme were as follows: physical health was the primary limitation to participation in community activities; COVID-19 restrictions limited participation in social activities and centre-based physical rehabilitation; low uptake of videoconferencing to facilitate socialisation and rehabilitation; and reduced incidental physical activity. Mean FAI score was 21.2 (SD 7.8), indicating that participants were moderately active. Participants most commonly performed domestic activities (mean: 10.0, SD: 4.1), followed by outdoor activities (mean: 6.6, SD: 3.5) and leisure/work activities (mean: 4.5, SD: 2.5). Conclusions: COVID-19 restrictions exacerbated perceptions of social isolation and the limitations already imposed by poor physical health after discharge from rehabilitation. This qualitative study explored ex-offender's community reintegration experiences following a prison sentence. Fourteen ex-offenders from the Offender Alumni Association participated in an in-person in-depth individual interview regarding their current roles, daily routines, living situation, activity participation, and current and future plans. A phenomenological approach using thematic analysis was employed for data collection and interpretation. The emerged themes were categorized under facilitators and barriers that influence healthy community reintegration. The facilitators included visualizing and committing to an ideal future, establishing a daily routine, upholding life balance, and discovering and connecting to external supports. The barriers included impediments to employment opportunities, lack of financial resources, social stigma, regulations imposed by the judicial system, disconnection from social advancements, and addiction to drugs and alcohol. The themes identified from the interviews suggest that current reintegration strategies and programs need to be improved in order to benefit ex-offenders seeking these services. To further understand social and leisure (SL) participation after stroke and how it can be supported in a long-term perspective, this study aims to deepen the understanding of strategies used by long-term stroke survivors in relation to SL activities. The study has a qualitative design, using a grounded theory approach, and is based on in-depth interviews with 10 persons who had a stroke 15 years ago and four of their family members. The findings comprise nine different strategies used by the participants. These had two overarching purposes; to protect and re-construct the post-stroke self and to enable participation in valued SL activities despite challenges. The findings are summarized in one overarching theme: "Employing different strategies to balance costs and rewards of engagement in social and leisure activities". Strategies for SL participation involves balancing different priorities in life and can change over time as they are continuously influenced by various personal and environmental conditions. These findings contribute to an improved understanding of why and how people hold on to activities, give up activities and find new activities after a stroke. It also highlights the need for a long-term perspective on stroke rehabilitation and support. Re-engagement in social and leisure activities after stroke is a long-term process and various types of support may be needed during different stages of recovery and adaptation. Successful rehabilitation interventions build on an understanding of each individual's priorities, goals and strategies and how these may change or manifest over time. Special attention should be given to the individual's perception of costs and benefits in relation to engagement in activities, and the role that it has for the person's identity. Background: Social participation levels of individuals with Multiple Sclerosis (iwMS) are lower than those of healthy individuals., Objective: This study aimed to evaluate to which extent the walking capacity, balance, and fear of falling (FoF) affect the community integration levels of iwMS., Methods: Thirty-nine iwMS were evaluated for their participation levels [The Community Integration Questionnaire (CIQ)], walking capacity [The Six-Minute Walk Test (6MWT)], balance [Kinesthetic Ability Trainer (SportKAT®)], and FoF [The Modified Falls Efficacy Scale (MFES)]. Correlation and regression analyses were performed to detect the effects of SportKAT®, 6MWT, and MFES on CIQ., Results: CIQ scores were significantly correlated with 6MWT ( p  = .043) and MFES ( p  = .005) scores, while CIQ was not related with static (for two feet test p  = .356, for right single-leg stance test p  = .412, for left single-leg stance test p  = .730) and dynamic balance (for clockwise test p  = .097, for counterclockwise test p  = .540) measured with the SportKAT®. It was found that CIQ could be predicted by 6MWT and MFES at the level of 16% and 25%, respectively., Conclusion: FoF and walking capacity are associated with community integration in iwMS. Therefore, physiotherapy and rehabilitation programs of iwMS should be combined with treatment goals to increase community integration, balance, and gait and decrease the disability and FoF from an early stage. Comprehensive studies examining other factors that may impact participation in iwMS with different levels of disability are needed.

Context/objective: Community integration (CI) is a crucial rehabilitation goal after spinal cord injury (SCI). There is a pressing need to enhance our understanding of the factors associated with CI for individuals with traumatic or non-traumatic etiologies, with the latter being notably understudied. Accordingly, our research explores the associations and potential mediators influencing CI across these populations., Setting: Specialized neurological rehabilitation center., Participants: Community-dwelling individuals who were admitted as inpatients within 3 months post-injury ( n  = 431, 51.9% traumatic, 48.1% non-traumatic), assessed in relation to community integration within 1-3 years after discharge., Outcome Measure: Community Integration Questionnaire (CIQ). Covariates: American Spinal Injury Association Impairment Scale (AIS), Functional Independence Measure (FIM) and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS)., Results: Multiple linear regression yielded age, B AIS grade, educational level (< 6 years and <12 years), time since injury to admission, length of stay, HADS-depression at discharge, total FIM at discharge and three social work interventions (support in financial, legal and transportation services) as significant predictors of total CIQ score (Adjusted R  = 41.4). Multiple logistic regression identified age, traumatic etiology, educational level (< 6 years and <12 years), length of stay, HADS depression at discharge, total FIM at discharge and one social work intervention (transportation support) as significant predictors of good community integration, AUC (95% CI): 0.82 (0.75-0.89), Sensitivity:0.76, Specificity:0.73. We identified motor FIM at discharge and motor FIM efficiency as causal mediators of total CIQ.2  = 41.4). Achieving effective community reintegration is important to maximize recovery in patients with traumatic brain injury, simultaneously limiting caregiver burden and improving satisfaction with quality of life. Certain medical complications that are common after brain injury may impact community reintegration, and should be addressed by the physician in a systematic approach. Additionally certain social and environmental factors such as mobility or return to work or school may arise, and should be addressed proactively by the physician. Purpose: To explore barriers and facilitators to community reintegration experienced by people following traumatic upper limb amputation (ULA)., Methods: An exploratory qualitative study was conducted with ten adults with major ULA due to trauma. Data from individual, semi-structured interviews was analysed using Braun and Clarke's reflexive thematic analysis., Results: Underlying and influencing community reintegration for participants, was a process of adjustment to the impacts of amputation on everyday function and re-establishing their identity. Participants felt social networks and peer support facilitated the return to social and community activities, as did drawing on personal attributes such as positivity, resilience and self-belief. Prosthetic devices were facilitative for community reintegration by minimising visible differences and unwanted attention through restored cosmesis and in the performance of functional tasks to fulfil social norms and meaningful roles despite issues with comfort and function. Despite the adaptation and evolution of abilities, perspectives and identities, the functional impact of ULA on everyday community activities was an ongoing challenge for all participants., Conclusion: ULA has a significant and lifelong impact on an individual's ability to complete tasks and fulfil meaningful roles in the community. Recommendations based on the study's findings will inform clinicians to support community reintegration for people following traumatic ULA.

Objective: Social participation in daily living the activities requires the maintenance of a variety of social relationships with others and engagement in various social activities. Proper social participation increases the feeling of attachment, provides a stable sense of identity, and increases one’s sense of worth, belonging, and dependence on society. Lack of social participation leads to anxiety, loneliness, depression, panic, mental disorders and many other mental problems and affects society in general. A new coronavirus, called COVID-19, was identified in late December 2019 in China. After just one year, it has been reportedly infected more than 85 million people (up to January 1, 2021) worldwide, and more than 1.8 million have died. Two public health measures to break the transmission chain include quarantine and social distancing. These measures restrict gatherings or separate individuals. Due to these measures in many countries, people’s participation in many social activities has been disrupted. The purpose of this study is to survey the negative effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on home integration, community integration and productive activities. Materials & Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in June 2020 by using the Community Integration Questionnaire (CIQ) which measures home integration, community integration, and productive activities, along with a demographic form which were sent to 461 participants in Iran (Mean ±SD age= 36.86±5.8 years) on WhatsApp or via email and completed online. Participants were selected from among college students, patients, people with disabilities, their families and relatives, and others who could use smartphones, computers, tablets, and laptops.
