[Context] Recent observations at subarcsecond resolution, now possible also at submillimeter wavelengths, have shown intricate circumstellar structures around asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars, mostly attributed to binary interaction. The results presented here are part of a larger project aimed at investigating the effects of a binary companion on the morphology of circumstellar envelopes (CSEs) of AGB stars., [Aims] AGB stars are characterized by intense stellar winds that build CSEs around the stars. Here, the CO(J = 3 → 2) emission from the CSE of the binary S-Type AGB star W Aql has been observed at subarcsecond resolution using ALMA. The aim of this paper is to investigate the wind properties of the AGB star and to analyse how the known companion has shaped the CSE., [Methods] The average mass-loss rate during the creation of the detected CSE is estimated through modelling, using the ALMA brightness distribution and previously published single-dish measurements as observational constraints. The ALMA observations are presented and compared to the results from a 3D smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) binary interaction model with the same properties as the W Aql system and with two different orbital eccentricities. Three-dimensional radiative transfer modelling is performed and the response of the interferometer is modelled and discussed., [Results] The estimated average mass-loss rate of W Aql is = 3.0 × 10M yr and agrees with previous results based on single-dish CO line emission observations. The size of the emitting region is consistent with photodissociation models. The inner 10′′ of the CSE is asymmetric with arc-like structures at separations of 2-3′′ scattered across the denser sections. Further out, weaker spiral structures at greater separations are found, but this is at the limit of the sensitivity and field of view of the ALMA observations., [Conclusions] The CO(J = 3 → 2) emission is dominated by a smooth component overlayed with two weak arc patterns with different separations. The larger pattern is predicted by the binary interaction model with separations of ~10′′ and therefore likely due to the known companion. It is consistent with a binary orbit with low eccentricity. The smaller separation pattern is asymmetric and coincides with the dust distribution, but the separation timescale (200 yr) is not consistent with any known process of the system. The separation of the known companions of the system is large enough to not have a very strong effect on the circumstellar morphology. The density contrast across the envelope of a binary with an even larger separation will not be easily detectable, even with ALMA, unless the orbit is strongly asymmetric or the AGB star has a much larger mass-loss rate., S.M. is grateful to the South African National Research Foundation (NRF) for a research grant. We report the discovery of the millisecond pulsar (MSP) PSR J1950+2414 ($P=4.3$ ms) in a binary system with an eccentric ($e=0.08$) 22-day orbit in Pulsar ALFA survey observations with the Arecibo telescope. Its companion star has a median mass of 0.3 $M_\odot$ and is most likely a white dwarf. Fully recycled MSPs like this one are thought to be old neutron stars spun-up by mass transfer from a companion star. This process should circularize the orbit, as is observed for the vast majority of binary MSPs, which predominantly have orbital eccentricities $e < 0.001$. However, four recently discovered binary MSPs have orbits with $0.027 < e < 0.44$; PSR J1950+2414 is the fifth such system to be discovered. The upper limits for its intrinsic spin period derivative and inferred surface magnetic field strength are comparable to those of the general MSP population. The large eccentricities are incompatible with the predictions of the standard recycling scenario: something unusual happened during their evolution. Proposed scenarios are a) initial evolution of the pulsar in a triple system which became dynamically unstable, b) origin in an exchange encounter in an environment with high stellar density, c) rotationally delayed accretion-induced collapse of a super-Chandrasekhar white dwarf, and d) dynamical interaction of the binary with a circumbinary disk. We compare the properties of all five known eccentric MSPs with the predictions of these formation channels. Knowledge of the chemical composition and absolute masses of Capella are key to understanding the evolutionary state of this benchmark binary system comprising two giant stars. Previous efforts, including our own 2009 study, have largely failed to reach an acceptable agreement between the observations and current stellar evolution models, preventing us from assessing the status of the primary. Here we report a revision of the physical properties of the components incorporating recently published high-precision radial velocity measurements, and a new detailed chemical analysis providing abundances for more than 20 elements in both stars. We obtain highly precise (to about 0.3%) masses of 2.5687 +/- 0.0074 and 2.4828 +/- 0.0067 solar masses, radii of 11.98 +/- 0.57 and 8.83 +/- 0.33 solar radii, effective temperatures of 4970 +/- 50 K and 5730 +/- 60 K, and independently measured luminosities based on the orbital parallax (78.7 +/- 4.2 and 72.7 +/- 3.6 solar luminosities). We find an excellent match to stellar evolution models at the measured composition of [Fe/H] = -0.04 +/- 0.06. Three different sets of models place the primary star firmly at the end of the core helium-burning phase (clump), while the secondary is known to be evolving rapidly across the Hertzprung gap. The measured lithium abundance, the C/N ratio, and the 12C/13C isotopic carbon abundance ratio, which change rapidly in the giant phase, are broadly in agreement with expectations from models. Predictions from tidal theory for the spin rates, spin-orbit alignment, and other properties do not fare as well, requiring a 40-fold increase in the efficiency of the dissipation mechanisms in order to match the observations., Comment: 15 pages in emulateapj format, including figures and tables, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

Ground-based spectroscopy of η Car shows periodic changes in some emission-line wavelengths. These variations have been cited as strong evidence that this object is a 5.5 yr binary system and have been used to produce specific orbit models. High spatial resolution data obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope/Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph, however, do not confirm the predicted velocity behavior; therefore, the published orbit models are almost certainly invalid. Wavelength fluctuations seen at ground-based spatial resolution most likely result from other effects, which we describe. If this object is a binary system (which has not been proven), then the parameters of the secondary star and of the orbit remain largely unknown.

The main aim of the present paper is the very first analysis of the binary-orbit precession out of our Galaxy. The light curves of an eclipsing binary MACHO 82.8043.171 in the Large Magellanic cloud (LMC) were studied in order to analyse the long-term evolution of its orbit. It is a detached system that is undergoing rapid orbit precession. The inclination of the orbit towards the observer has been changing, which has caused the eclipse depth to become lower over the past decade, and this is ongoing. The period of this effect was derived as only about 77 years, so it is the second fastest nodal motion known amongst such systems nowadays. This is the first analysis of an extragalactic binary with nodal precession. This effect is probably caused by a distant third body orbiting the pair, which could potentially be detected via spectroscopy. Some preliminary estimates of this body are presented. The M dwarf binary, Wolf 1062 (Gliese 748), has been observed with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Fine Guidance Sensor 3 in the transfer function scan mode to determine the apparent orbit. This is the first orbit defined fully and exclusively with HST, and is the most accurate definitive orbit for any resolved, noneclipsing system. The orbital period is 2.4490 ± 0.0119 yr and the semimajor axis is 01470 ± 00007—both quantities are now known to better than 1%. Using the weighted mean of seven parallax measurements and these HST data, we find the system mass to be 0.543 ± 0.031 M⊙, where the error of 6% is due almost entirely to the parallax error. An estimated fractional mass from the infrared brightness ratio and infrared mass-luminosity relation yields a mass for the primary of 0.37 M⊙, and the secondary falls in the regime of very low mass stars, with a mass of only 0.17 M⊙.

We analyze the stability of relativistic, quasi-equilibrium binary neutron stars in synchronous circular orbit. We explore stability against radial collapse to black holes prior to merger, and against orbital plunge. We apply theorems based on turning points along uniformly rotating sequences of constant angular momentum and rest mass to locate the onset of secular instabilities. This poster displays a statistical summary based on the information contained in the Double Star Orbit Catalog of the Ramon Maria Aller Astronomical Observatory (OARMA). Among other findings, the current aleatory period-eccentricity distribution is particularly interesting. We have correlated eccentricities, periods, spectral types, Hipparcos parallaxes and the orientations of the orbital planes. A list is included that contains all of the names of the authors of the orbits as well as the number of orbits calculated by the authors (February 2011).

High-dispersion spectroscopic observations are used to refine orbital elements for the symbiotic binary CH Cyg. The current radial velocities, added to a previously published 13 year time series of infrared velocities for the M giant in the CH Cyg symbiotic system, more than double the length of the time series to 29 years. The two previously identified velocity periods are confirmed. The long period, revised to 15.6 +/- 0.1 yr, is shown to result from a binary orbit with a 0.7 solar mass white dwarf and 2 solar mass M giant. Mass transfer to the white dwarf is responsible for the symbiotic classification. CH Cyg is the longest period S-type symbiotic known. Similarities with the longer period D-type systems are noted. The 2.1 year period is shown to be on Wood's sequence D, which contains stars identified as having long secondary periods (LSP). The cause of the LSP variation in CH Cyg and other stars is unknown. From our review of possible causes, we identify g-mode non-radial pulsation as the leading mechanism for LSP variation in CH Cyg. We present a comprehensive spectral analysis of the high mass X-ray binary (HMXB) pulsar Centaurus X-3 with the Suzaku observatory covering nearly one orbital period. The light curve shows the presence of extended dips which are rarely seen in HMXBs. These dips are seen up to as high as ~40 keV. The pulsar spectra during the eclipse, out-of-eclipse, and dips are found to be well described by a partial covering power-law model with high energy cut-off and three Gaussian functions for 6.4 keV, 6.7 keV, and 6.97 keV iron emission lines. The dips in the light curve can be explained by the presence of an additional absorption component with high column density and covering fraction, the values of which are not significant during the rest of the orbital phases. The iron line parameters during the dips and eclipse are significantly different compared to those during the rest of the observation. During the dips, the iron line intensities are found to be lesser by a factor of 2--3 with significant increase in the line equivalent widths. However, the continuum flux at the corresponding orbital phase is estimated to be lesser by more than an order of magnitude. Similarities in the changes in the iron line flux and equivalent widths during the dips and eclipse segments suggests the dipping activity in Cen X-3 is caused by obscuration of the neutron star by dense matter, probably structures in the outer region of the accretion disk, as in case of dipping low mass X-ray binaries., 10 Pages, 7 figures, Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

Our highly accurate three-dimensional orbital solution based on all existing spectroscopic and astrometric observations including our own yields much improved masses of 2.466 +/- 0.018 M_Sun and 2.443 +/- 0.013 M_Sun for the primary and secondary (relative errors of 0.7% and 0.5%). Improved values are derived also for the radii (11.87 +/- 0.56 R_Sun and 8.75 +/- 0.32 R_Sun), effective temperatures (4920 +/- 70 K and 5680 +/- 70 K), and luminosities (79.5 +/- 4.8 L_Sun and 72.1 +/- 3.6 L_Sun). The distance is determined to be 13.042 +/- 0.028 pc. Capella is unique among evolved stars in that, in addition to all of the above, the chemical composition is known, including the overall metallicity [m/H], the carbon isotope ratio 12C/13C for the primary, and the lithium abundance and C/N ratios for both components. The latter three quantities are sensitive diagnostics of evolution, and change drastically for giants as a result of the deepening of the convective envelope during the first dredge-up. The secondary is crossing the Hertzprung gap, while the primary is believed to be in the longer-lived core-helium burning phase. However, we find that current stellar evolution models are unable to match all of the observations for both components at the same time, and at a single age, for any evolutionary state of the primary. Similar problems are found when testing the rotational synchronization, spin axis alignment, and orbital circularization of the system against tidal theory. This shows the great importance of chemical information for assessing the evolutionary state of giant stars. A comparison with models of tidal evolution yields similarly disappointing results, when tested against the fact that the orbit is circular, the primary is rotating synchronously, the secondary ~12 times faster than synchronous, and the spin axes are apparently aligned with the axis of the orbit. When confronted in detail, our understanding of the advanced stages of stellar evolution is thus still very incomplete.

The bright K1 III-IV star gamma Cep has been reported previously to have a companion in a 2.5-yr orbit that is possibly substellar, and also has a stellar companion at a larger separation that has never been seen. Here we determine for the first time the three-dimensional orbit of the stellar companion accounting also for the perturbation from the closer object. We combine new and existing radial velocity measurements (of both classical precision and high precision) with intermediate astrometric data from the Hipparcos mission (abscissa residuals) as well as ground-based positional observations going back more than a century. The orbit of the secondary star is eccentric and has a period of 66.8 yr. We establish the primary star to be on the first ascent of the giant branch, and to have a mass of 1.18 M_Sun, an effective temperature of 4800 K, and an age around 6.6 Gyr (for an assumed metallicity [Fe/H] = +0.01). The unseen secondary star is found to be an M4 dwarf with a mass of 0.362 M_Sun, and is expected to be about 6.4 mag fainter than the primary in K. The minimum mass of the putative planetary companion is M_p sin i = 1.43 M_Jup. Taking advantage again of the high-precision Hipparcos observations we are able to place a dynamical upper limit on this mass of 13.3 M_Jup (95% confidence level) and 16.9 M_Jup (99.73%, or 3 sigma) thus confirming that it is indeed substellar in nature. We present a simplified solution to orbit determination of a binary system from astrometric observations. An exact solution was found by Asada, Akasaka and Kasai by assuming no observational errors. We extend the solution considering observational data. In this work we suggest one possible approach to “computerization” of the process of the visual double star orbit determination. Our computer program, based on the original method (Olević 1989), is interactive which means that the calculator of the orbit makes the final decision about the choice of the best orbit.

In 1985 the NGS introduced GPS orbit formats and weekly orbit products based on those formats. The products are very specific regarding contents, epoch interval, and arc length; however, the formats are general. The formats permit any start time, any epoch interval, any number of epochs, and any number of satellites. These formats also accommodate partial orbital data for one or more satellites. These formats come In ASCII and binary and comprise either position data or position and velocity data. Although these formats have been used for 6–7 years and have been well received by the GPS community, it was decided that they would be enhanced to include satellite clock information. The 1985 (first generation) orbital formats and products will continue to be valid.
