IntroductionGradual pollen presentation is a reproductive strategy for plants to improve the efficiency and accuracy of pollen export and acceptance as well as to promote outcrossing. Vaccinium corymbosum Berkeley has a typical mechanism of gradual pollen presentation.MethodsIn this study, we used indoor and outdoor observations to investigate the floral characteristics, pollination characteristics and breeding system of this species in open ground and greenhouse.ResultsThe results showed that the single white, inverted bell-shaped flower of V. corymbosum was able to effectively avoid the negative effects of rainfall, nectar dilution and pollen removal by wind, and improved pollen viability and the duration of stigma receptivity. The setting rate of ‘Northland’ is higher than open ground by artificial pollination in greenhouse, therefore, greenhouses are more suitable for ‘Northland’ reproduction. The gradual pollen presentation prolongs dispersal time, promotes pollinator participation in the pollination process, increases staminate fitness, and provides for nectar feeding by pollinators as well as pollen export. Bombus spp. and A. m. ligustica were effective pollinators in the open ground and greenhouse, and the pollination efficiency of Bombus spp. was higher than that of A. m. ligustica, and greenhouse pollination is more efficient than open ground. The coincidence of the peak period of pollinator visits with the period of highest pollen viability and optimal pollination of stigmas, as well as the high nectar production, could maximize the frequency of pollinator visits and increase the chances of successful pollination as well as the pollination efficiency.DiscussionTherefore, it is important to study the floral characteristics of V. corymbosum Berkeley and the mechanism of gradual pollen presentation in order to improve the pollination efficiency and promote the success of outcrossing, which can provide a theoretical basis for the breeding of V. corymbosum.

Access to synchrotron X-ray facilities has become an important aspect for many disciplines in experimental Earth science. This is especially important for studies that rely on probing samples in situ under natural conditions different from the ones found at the surface of the Earth. The non-ambient condition Earth science program at the Advanced Light Source (ALS), Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, offers a variety of tools utilizing the infra-red and hard X-ray spectrum that allow Earth scientists to probe Earth and environmental materials at variable conditions of pressure, stress, temperature, atmospheric composition, and humidity. These facilities are important tools for the user community in that they offer not only considerable capacity (non-ambient condition diffraction) but also complementary (IR spectroscopy, microtomography), and in some cases unique (Laue microdiffraction) instruments. The availability of the ALS’ in situ probes to the Earth science community grows especially critical during the ongoing dark time of the Advanced Photon Source in Chicago, which massively reduces available in situ synchrotron user time in North America.

Studies of the Early Modern debate concerning absolute and relative space and motion often ignore the significance of the concept of true motion in this debate. Even philosophers who denied the existence of absolute space maintained that true motions could be distinguished from merely apparent ones. In this paper, I examine Berkeley's endorsement of this distinction and the problems it raises. First, Berkeley's endorsement raises a problem of consistency with his other philosophical commitments, namely his idealism. Second, Berkeley's endorsement raises a problem of adequacy , namely whether Berkeley can provide an adequate account of what grounds the distinction between true and merely apparent motion. In this paper, I argue that sensitivity to Berkeley's distinction between what is true in the metaphysical, scientific, and vulgar domains can address both the consistency and the adequacy problems. I argue that Berkeley only accepts true motion in the scientific and vulgar domains, and not the metaphysical. There is thus no inconsistency between his endorsement of true motion in science and ordinary language, and his metaphysical idealism. Further, I suggest that sensitivity to these three domains shows that Berkeley possesses resources to give an adequate account of how true motions are discovered in natural science. Miocene strata of the Claremont, Orinda, and Moraga formations of the Berkeley Hills (California Coast Ranges, USA) record sedimentation and volcanism during the passage of the Mendocino triple junction and early evolution of the San Andreas fault system. Detrital zircon laser ablation–inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) age spectra indicate a change in sedimentary prove nance between the marine Claremont formation (Monterey Group) and the terrestrial Orinda and Moraga Formations associated with uplift of Franciscan Complex lithologies. A sandstone from the Claremont formation produced a detrital zircon chemical abrasion–isotope dilution–thermal ionization mass spec trometry (CA-ID-TIMS) maximum depositional age of 13.298 ± 0.046 Ma, indicating younger Claremont deposition than previously interpreted. A trachydacite tuff clast within the uppermost Orinda Formation yielded a CA-ID-TIMS U-Pb zircon date of 10.094 ± 0.018 Ma, and a dacitic tuff within the Moraga Formation produced a CA-ID-TIMS U-Pb zircon date of 9.974 ± 0.014 Ma. These results indicate rapid progression from subsidence in which deep-water siliceous sediments of the Claremont formation were deposited to uplift that was followed by subsidence during deposition of terrestrial sediments of the Orinda Forma tion and subsequent eruption of the Moraga Formation volcanics. We associate the Orinda tuff clast and Moraga volcanics with slab-gap volcanism that followed the passage of the Mendocino triple junction. Given the necessary time lag between triple junction passage and the removal of the slab that led to this volcanism, subsidence associated with ca. 13 Ma Claremont sedimentation and subsequent Orinda to Moraga deposition can be attributed to basin formation along the newly arrived transform boundary.

Right-lateral transform motion associated with the Pacific-North American plate boundary in the modern-day San Francisco Bay Area occurs across a series of sub-parallel fault zones. Much of this motion is accommodated east of the San Andreas Fault by the faults of the East Bay fault system. A major tool for reconstructing the spatial and temporal history of fault motion is the correlation of offset Neogene volcanic rocks. These Neogene volcanics within the California Coast Ranges formed in association with the slab gap that grew as the Mendocino Triple Junction migrated northward. Some of the volcanic centres have been variably offset by subsequent strike-slip faulting. A felsic volcanic unit exposed in Berkeley, CA, known as the Northbrae rhyolite has variably been interpreted to be one of these Neogene volcanic units or to be a Mesozoic volcanic unit associated with the Coast Range ophiolite. A new U-Pb zircon date of 11.10 (Formula presented.) 0.09 Ma confirms the Neogene volcanic interpretation. This date is indistinguishable from previously published Ar/Ar dates from the Burdell Mountain volcanics of the North Bay region as well as a new U-Pb zircon date of 11.07 (Formula presented.) 0.10 Ma. In addition to the indistinguishable ages, similarities in bulk lithology, zircon crystallization/dissolution textures, and zircon trace element geochemistry are consistent with these rhyolites being associated with the same volcanic centre. This correlation implies that 40 (Formula presented.) 5 km of right-lateral offset occurred to the west of the modern-day position of the Hayward-Rodgers Creek fault zone. This offset represents (Formula presented.) 20% of the total offset along the East Bay fault system. A proto-Hayward Fault with a different geometry than that of the present-day played a significant role in the evolution of the fault system. This result highlights the dynamic spatiotemporal variability of strike-slip faults along transform margins.

Oxford Street is the western boundary of University of California, Berkeley campus and connects the university to downtown Berkeley and the BART station. Oxford for All is a vision developed by the UC Berkeley Department of City and Regional Planning Transportation Studio that envisions an Oxford Street that seeks to serve all users, regardless of ability or mode choice.To better understand the planning context and needs of the corridor’s residents, the project team conducted the following: Historical context research, Academic literature review, Review of relevant planning documents and plans, Interviews with professional and academic subject matter experts, Case studies of other urban university campuses, Review of planned developments, Pedestrian and cyclist counts, Community outreach event, Survey of businesses.This work revealed that Oxford Street does not serve all road users adequately. The street design prioritizes driving, with wide streets, narrow sidewalks, and poor facilities for pedestrians and bicyclists. The lack of character means the street is a psychological boundary between Berkeley’s downtown and campus.

I graduated as a geography major from the University of California, Berkeley (1951–1953). After two years in the Navy, I came back as a graduate student, did not do well, and spent the next year traveling in South America and Nicaragua. Returning, I wrote my master’s thesis on the pine forests in highland Nicaragua. After a year working in Washington, D.C., I returned to Berkeley in 1959. I did research in Bolivian Amazonia for my PhD, completed in 1963. Carl Sauer was my inspiration, but Jim Parsons was my mentor. I was hired by the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where I remained for thirty years. I was in and out of Berkeley Geography from 1951 until 1963, dropping out several times and then reentering. I became a geographer at Berkeley over seventy years ago, and I have continued relationships with Berkeley Geography since then. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This technical brief estimates the expected performance of a solar photovoltaic and energy storage system (PVESS) for providing backup power during short-duration power interruption events, accounting for the unpredictable nature of those events. The analysis relies on the Power Reliability Event Simulation TOol (PRESTO), a publicly available model developed by Berkeley Lab to simulate the occurrence of short-duration power interruption events at the county-level. A separate storage dispatch model is then used to simulate PVESS operation and backup performance for each of the large number of interruption events produced by PRESTO. In performing this simulation, the analysis accounts for how the customer operates its battery on a day-to-day basis—in this case, we assume the battery is cycled each day in response to time-of-use rates—and how that, in turn, impacts the battery’s state of charge at the beginning of each interruption event. The analysis presented here is intended to demonstrate an application of the PRESTO model as well as to illustrate some of the key determinants of PVESS backup power performance during short-duration power interruption events. The analysis focuses initially on a typical single-family home in Maricopa County, Arizona, and includes a limited set of scenarios related to system sizing, backup power configuration, and whether the customer charges its battery storage system from the grid during normal operating conditions. The analysis also presents comparative results for two other counties, in Massachusetts (Middlesex) and California (Los Angeles), illustrating how regional differences in climate, interruption patterns, and retail rate structures can affect PVESS performance as a backup power source. In the conclusions, we highlight a number of other important considerations for evaluating PVESS backup power capabilities.

Aims. OB-runaway stars ejected by the binary supernova mechanism can be found near young open star clusters. In this paper, we present an OB-runaway candidate as a pre-SN binary companion to the progenitor of the pulsar PSR J2238+5903 inside the young open star cluster Berkeley 97. Methods. We tried to find a kinematic outlier based on Gaia DR3 proper motions and parallaxes to be the pre-supernova binary companion to the progenitor of the pulsar. We took the spectra of two bright early B-type stars of the cluster, determined their effective temperature and surface gravity, and updated the parameters of the cluster. Through isochrone fitting of the color-magnitude diagram of the star cluster, we identified the members and determined the stellar parameters of the runaway star. Results. Two bright members of the cluster, HD 240015 and HD 240016, are massive stars with spectral types of B0.5II and B1.5II and effective temperatures of Teff = 21 000 ± 1000 K and Teff = 24 000 ± 2000 K, respectively, as well as surface gravities of log(g[cm/s2]) = 3.0 ± 0.2. We find that Berkeley 97 is a star cluster with an age of log(age[yr]) = 7.1, an uncertainty of < 0.1 dex, and an interstellar extinction of AV = 3.1 ± 0.1 mag. The runaway star has an effective temperature of Teff = 12 250 ± 1750 K with a surface gravity of log(g[cm/s2]) = 4.38 ± 0.2 (B8V type star). By tracing back the proper motion of the runaway star, the explosion center was found for different possible pulsar ages of 10, 20, and 26.6 kyr. The pulsar moving out from the 20 kyr position must have a space velocity of ∼340 km s−1, which is consistent with the general pulsar velocity distribution. This supports the idea that the pulsar originated from the cluster as a result of a binary supernova. Despite its young age, τ < 26.6 kyr, the supernova remnant is not visible. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
