Background: Medical schools apply a range of selection methods to ensure that admitted students succeed in the program. In Australia, selection tools typically include measures of academic achievement (e.g. the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank – ATAR) and aptitude tests (e.g. the Undergraduate Medicine and Health Sciences Admissions Test – UMAT). These are most commonly used to determine which applicants are invited for additional selection processes, such as interviews. However, no previous study has examined the efficacy of the first part of the selection process. In particular, are compensatory or non-compensatory approaches more effective in evaluating the outcomes of cognitive and aptitude tests, and do they affect the demographics of students selected for interview? Methods: This study utilised data from consecutive cohorts of mainstream domestic students who applied to enter the UNSW Medicine program between 2013 to 2018. A compensatory ranked selection model was compared with a non-compensatory ranked model. Initially, ATAR marks and UMAT scores for each applicant were ranked within each cohort. In the compensatory model, the mean of the ATAR and UMAT ranks were used to determine the outcome. In the non-compensatory model, the lowest rank of ATAR and UMAT determined the outcome for each applicant. The impact of each model on the gender and socioeconomic status of applicants selected to interview was evaluated across all cohorts. Results: The non-compensatory ranked selection model resulted in substantially higher ATAR and UMAT thresholds for invitation to interview, with no significant effect on the socioeconomic status of the selected applicants. Conclusions: These results are important, demonstrating that it is possible to raise the academic threshold for selection to medicine without having any negative impact on applicants from low socioeconomic backgrounds. Overall, the evidence gathered in this study suggests that a non-compensatory model is preferable for selecting applicants for medical student selection interview. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article examines some aspects of providing psychiatric aid for a person in compulsory order according to the civil procedural legislation of Ukraine. In particular, the current legal norms, which regulate the procedure for conducting a psychiatric examination, providing outpatient psychiatric care, and hospitalization in a psychiatric care facility in the event that a person does not gives his informed consent to this, are analyzed. An analysis of the proposed legislative initiatives in this direction was also carried out, based on the relevance of the issue of ensuring the rights of persons with signs of a mental disorders. It has been established that providing psychiatric aid for a person in compulsory orderpredictedto a person in compliance with the Law of Ukraine «On Psychiatric Care» and in accordance with the provisions of the Civil Procedure Code of Ukraine. At the same time, consideringto certain imperfections, some of it’s norms need to be updated, which is due to the need to respect the rights of the individual, the patient, as well as the presumption of mental health. The legislative initiatives considered in the article regarding to the optimization of civil procedural legislation, which provide for the expansion of the list of subjects of appeals to the court with an application for compulsory psychiatric examination of a person, are fully justified and expedient. However, the provisions regarding the capabilityof an opportunity to carry out a preliminary assessment of a person's mental state by a doctor with any medical specialty, as well as the extension of the deadline for considering an application for a compulsory psychiatric examination of a person, which excludes the urgency of providing psychiatric aid for a personwithouthis informed consent, are debatable. The legislators took into account certain problematic aspects that arise in the course of civil proceedings during the consideration of the specified category of cases, however, it would be expedient to provide into the norms of the current legislation effective mechanisms for observing the confidentiality and safety of persons with signs of a mental disorder, as well as to establish the right of a person who is providedcompulsory psychiatric care (or its representative) to refuse such care.,

In this study, we investigated the currently applied selective admission criteria and tools of the two-year research master's programs of both the Graduate Schools of Life Sciences and Natural Sciences of Utrecht University (the Netherlands). In addition, we evaluated their transparency to applicants. Both admissions staff members and applicants participated. To determine admission criteria that are important for admission decisions, we ranked 51 admission criteria and, on their basis, combined into six domains: academic background, grades, cognitive ability, research background, personality and personal competencies, motivation factors. To evaluate transparency, we contrasted the perceptions of applicants with the actual importance of admission criteria, as reported by admission staff members. We found that admissions criteria related to personality and personal competencies are less important in admission decisions than criteria related to grades, academic background and motivation. The applicants find the admissions decisions transparent to a moderate degree. This study also revealed that selectors use criteria and tools both with and without predictive value for later graduate performance. Moreover, some of the currently applied admission instruments might be prone to admission biases. We advocate selectors to use admission criteria and tools that are evidence-based, resistant to admission biases, and transparent to the applicants. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present work advances warranting scholarship by considering the effect of online reviews (in response to organizational self-claims) on organizational attributions offline. An experiment exposed undergraduates (N = 148) to a company's social media profile, in which a third-party had provided either a positive or negative review of the organization as an employer. Analyses reveal review valence affected perceptions of organizational attractiveness, which subsequently predicted application intentions; and further that effects of positive reviews were moderated by the review's warranting value. Findings are discussed with respect to warranting theory and practical implications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Facial plastic and reconstructive surgery (FPRS) training programs offer exceptional exposure to the most current techniques in the field. However, applicants have many factors to weigh when ranking programs. Therefore, it is important to examine the factors that applicants believe to be the most critical when choosing an FPRS fellowship. This is an anonymous online survey of FPRS fellows between the years 2018 and 2020 (total 147). Respondents were asked to rate importance of program factors on a Likert scale (1–5). Of 147 applicants, 63 (43%) responded. Applicants found the type of practice, academic or private, equally important, with score averages of 3.02 and 3.25, respectively. The two most important program factors to applicants were exposure to the business of medicine/practice management (3.94) and location (3.4). The two most important areas of surgical exposure include rhinoplasty (4.54) and aging face (4.44). Of 63 applicants, 41 (65%) were interested in private practice, with 51% seeking a facial plastics/plastic reconstructive surgery group setting versus solo practice, general otolaryngology group, or dermatology group practice. Of 61 applicants, 48 (76%) wanted a mix of cosmetic/reconstructive surgery in their first 5 years of practice. Finally, applicants were not interested (average: 1.94) in keeping general otolaryngology as part of their practice. Applicants want strong exposure to the business of medicine, rhinoplasty, aging face, all while in their preferred location. Additionally, the majority of applicants seek employment in a plastic surgery focused group practice, with the sole focus being the breadth of FPRS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Surgery is an ever evolving discipline, and robotic-assisted procedures are the next generation of surgical techniques. There is currently no requirement for robotic training in surgical residency programs; thus, general surgery programs have incorporated it into their curriculums to varying degrees, including our recently adopted curriculum. As programs adopt new curriculum, it is unknown how applicants in community general surgery view the importance of robotic surgery for future procedures and its overall value in their training. To answer these questions, a voluntary and anonymous survey was given to all applicants of our community general surgery program and the responses assessed with descriptive statistics. The majority (76.92%) of our applicants believed robotic surgery would be very important in the future; however, less respondents (63.46%) believed that robotics would be very important to their particular career. While most (57.69%) reported being very interested in a program that offers robotic surgery, other respondents (53.85%) were indifferent toward a program that did not offer a robotics curriculum. Therefore, most applicants to our community program believe that robotic surgery will be an important part of surgery in upcoming years and most are very interested in a residency program that includes robotic surgery in the curriculum. The author proposes a number of ideas relating to MA training in economics. The paper considers the situation where in one audience meet the students with different levels of training including those who enter economic master's degree courses but do not have basic economic education. The responsibility for the implementation of the proposed solutions of this problem lies both with the university and the teacher. The author analyzes the situation when the state examination board is formed entirely by the employers' representatives or by members of professional associations. A number of problems that may arise in this case are discussed in the paper.

Background: There is a paucity of information regarding institutional targets for the number of undergraduate medical education (UME) graduates being matched to graduate medical education (GME) programs at their home institutions. At our institution, the Duke University, the number of UME graduates matched to GME programs declined dramatically in 2011. To better understand why this decline may have happened, we sought to identify perceived quality metrics for UME and GME learners, evaluate trends in match outcomes and educational program characteristics, and explore whether there is an ideal retention rate for UME graduates in their home institutions’ GME programs. Methods: We analyzed the number of Duke University UME graduates remaining at Duke for GME training over the past 5 years. We collected data to assess for changing characteristics of UME and GME, and performed descriptive analysis of trends over time to investigate the potential impact on match outcomes. Results: A one-sample t-test analysis showed no statistically significant difference in the number of Duke UME graduates who stayed for GME training. For both UME and GME, no significant changes in the characteristics of either program were found. Discussion: We created a process for monitoring data related to the characteristics or perceived quality of UME and GME programs and developed a shared understanding of what may impact match lists for both UME graduates and GME programs, leaving the Match somewhat less mysterious. While we understand the trend of graduates remaining at their home institutions for GME training, we are uncertain whether setting a goal for retention is reasonable, and so some mystery remains. We believe there is an invaluable opportunity for collaboration between UME and GME stakeholders to facilitate discussion about setting shared institutional goals.

Concerns related to fairness of medical school admissions through selection have led some scholars to consider selection as an expensive lottery and suggest that lottery may be fairer. This paper considers the issue of selection versus lottery from the perspectives of three groups of stakeholders: 1) applicants, 2) medical schools, and 3) society. This paper contributes to the discussion by addressing advantages and disadvantages of the use of selection and lottery for these stakeholder groups, grounded in the findings from research. Themes that are discussed are reliability and validity issues, perceived influence on selection outcomes and student uptake, effects on student diversity, financial costs, impact on rejected applicants, transparency, and strategic behaviour. For each stakeholder group both lottery and selection yield a combination of advantages and disadvantages, which implies that none of the currently available admissions strategies completely fulfils stakeholders’ needs. Research indicates that selection yields only small gains compared to a lottery procedure, while the student diversity, necessary for serving the increasingly diverse patient population, may be compromised. We argue that society’s needs should drive admissions policies rather than institutional gains, which means that until a selection procedure is developed that does not disadvantage certain types of students, a lottery procedure should be preferred.

- Abstract
The American Dental Education Association (ADEA) collects information on U.S. dental school applicants and first-time, first-year enrollees as part of the administration of dental school applications. This report presents an analysis of the data on the characteristics and academic qualifications of the 11,873 applicants who applied to U.S. dental schools during the 2016-17 application cycle and of the 6,122 first-time, first-year enrollees who began dental school in fall 2017. Among the key findings are the following: the number of applications decreased in 2016-17, while enrollment continued its steady 12-year rise; the number of women applicants exceeded the number of men by a larger margin than the previous two years, reversing the long-term trend of having more men apply to dental school (although men continued to have slightly higher levels of enrollment); when race/ethnicity was viewed alone or in combination, the number of applicants and first-time enrollees from most race/ethnic groups increased, although falling slightly were Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander and White applicants and enrollees; regionally, the Mid-Atlantic had the highest share of its population applying to dental school and the Northwest had the highest share to enroll in dental school; and applicants overwhelmingly had a biological or biomedical science educational background. The data and analysis presented in this report offer a unique picture of dental school applicants and enrollees. It provides school administrators with a national view of the qualifications of applicants, and it provides prospective applicants with a better understanding of the qualifications they likely need to enroll. The analysis also gives policymakers a preliminary view of future trends in the dental workforce. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Sparse data exist regarding the association between applicants' Comprehensive Basic Science Examination (CBSE) scores and acceptance into an oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMFS) residency program. The aims of this study were to assess the association between applicants' CBSE scores and acceptance into one OMFS residency program; to determine the association between other applicant-related variables and acceptance into the program; and to identify the mean CBSE score of accepted applicants by their dental schools' American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS) district. For this retrospective data analysis conducted in 2017, the study sample consisted of applicants to the University of Illinois at Chicago OMFS residency program for the application cycles of 2013-14, 2014-15, and 2015-16. The primary predictor variable was CBSE score. The primary outcome variable was acceptance to the program. A total of 477 applicants were in the sample. In the multivariate analysis, CBSE score was found to be significantly associated with an increased chance of acceptance into the program (OR=1.11, 95% CI: 1.08, 1.15; p<0.001). Other variables associated with acceptance, though to a non-significant degree, were age (p=0.01), dental school grade point average (GPA) (p=0.01), and number of externships completed prior to application (p=0.02). These findings may be useful for both applicants and program directors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The genetic counseling profession admitted to its lack of diversification more than 3 decades ago. However, even with the combined efforts of the profession’s top organizations, the National Society of Genetic Counselors (NSGC), the Association of Genetic Counseling Program Directors (AGCPD), and their members, the status of more than 90% homogenous majority workforce has persisted. It is judicious for the genetic counseling profession to rectify the inequity and unfairness aimed at discounted underrepresented groups within its own profession. Since the NSGC prioritized diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) issues in 2019, multiple studies have focused on revealing the barriers interfering with achieving diversity in the genetic counseling profession. Notably missing from this research are the voices of the applicants from underrepresented groups (URGs). We aimed to survey those applicants to identify their experienced barriers during the application process and their proposed prospects for improving their representation. We found that most respondents reported that costs incurred and tuition (93.2%), finding shadowing and internship opportunities (59.3%), and the Graduate Record Examination (GRE; 55.9%) as major barriers. They also identified obstacles such as lack of access to networking and a misconception on the part of the training programs regarding URGs’ non-competitiveness in science. We devised a set of recommendations based on the respondents’ suggestions and our research and analysis that included offering more financial support, reducing GRE restrictions, decreasing emphasis on shadowing, establishing a partnership with the Minority Genetic Professionals Network (MGPN), integrating program faculty and supervisors in DEI-certified training, and implementing standardized DEI courses in all training programs.

Introduction: Our objective is to evaluate the factors important to osteopathic applicants when selecting an American College of Osteopathic Emergency Physicians accredited emergency medicine (EM) residency and to compare these results with previous allopathic EM studies. Methods: We gave osteopathic applicants a survey during interview season to be filled out anonymously at the end of their interview day. This survey included 18 factors which the applicants were asked to rank between 1 (“not very important”) to 4 (“very important”). We then compared results to prior results of the same survey. Results: Forty applicants (67%) out of 60 completed the survey. From these individuals, we noticed differences in the top factors listed by the applicants when compared to allopathic interviewees, the most notable being the unimportance of geographic location of the program to osteopathic applicants as manifested by osteopathic student average score of 2.8 (standard deviation 0.75) verses allopathic student average of 3.6 (standard deviation 0.06). Conclusion: Of the top 5 factors listed by the applicants, only 1 (AOA-approved residency) is an objective factor that the program has a role in controlling. The remainder are mainly subjective factors based on applicant’s perceptions of the program. [West J Emerg Med. 2014;15(2):184–187.]

Background and aims Advanced endoscopy (AE) fellowship interviews during the 2020 application cycle were held virtually due to COVID-19 pandemic. This study aimed to characterize the application experience with virtual interviews. Methods Applicants and programs participating in the 2020 AE fellowship match were prospectively sent separate 17-question surveys. Responses were collected using Research Electronic Data Capture. Results In total, 63/104 applicants (60.6%) matched and 64/71 (90.1%) positions filled within the match. The survey was completed by 37/87 (42.5%) applicants and 71 interviewers from 43/65 (66.2%) participating programs. Most applicants (64.7%) preferred a 1:1 applicant:faculty ratio and a 20-minute interview (73.5%), which was used by programs 50.7% and 47.8%, respectively. The majority of applicants (82.4%) and interviewers (76.8%) reported overall satisfaction with virtual interviews. The biggest limitations for applicants were getting a “feel” for the program and endoscopy unit. In the future, 41.2% of applicants preferred only virtual interviews compared to 7.2% of interviewers (P< 0.01). Conversely, 14.7% of applicants preferred only in-person interviews compared to 39.1% of interviewers (P= 0.01). Half of the interviewers (50.7%) would negatively view applicants who chose a virtual option over an in-person interview if both were offered. Conclusion The majority of AE fellowship applicants and programs reported overall satisfaction with virtual interviews during the COVID-19 pandemic. Given the potential benefits, virtual interviews may have an increasing role in future residency and fellowship applications. Programs that conduct virtual interviews need to be aware of its limitations and have measures to improve the applicant experience and mitigate potential biases of interviewers.

- Abstract
Background and objective: Due to a decreased interest in surgical training the German Society of Surgery (GSS) has provided a specially sponsored student program at its annual clinical congress for many years in order to increase the number of applicants for a career in surgery. It remains unclear if this goal is reached because an evaluation has not yet been performed. Material and methods: At the clinical congress in 2014, 200 medical students participated in a special student program with the aid of a congress grant totaling 100,000 €. By means of a questionnaire it was asked how many of the participants in this special program have started a residency in surgery. Results: Almost 17% of the participants of the student program answered and 13 students (6.5% of all participants) stated that they had started a surgical residency. All of these students claimed an interest in surgery even before participation in the congress. Those students who had not yet decided what kind of residency they should choose did not vote for surgery despite their visit to the congress. Conclusion: The student program and the congress grant at the annual clinical congress of the GSS do not result in an increased number of applicants for a residency in surgery. Both incentives might be not more than a strategic marketing instrument. An increased number of medical students applying for a residency in surgery is only to be expected if social developments (e. g. attention to a work-life balance) and their concomitant challenges are reflected in surgical day to day work. - Abstract
The American Dental Education Association (ADEA) collects information on dental school applicants and first-time, first-year enrollees as part of the administration of dental school applications. This report analyzes the data on the characteristics and academic qualifications of the 12,058 applicants who applied during the 2015-16 application cycle and of the 6,100 firsttime, first-year enrollees who began dental school during fall 2016. Among the key findings are that the number of applications increased for the second year in a row, while enrollment continued its steady 12-year rise. The number of women applicants exceeded the number of men by a larger margin than the previous year, reversing the long-term trend of having more men apply to dental school. However, men continued to have slightly higher levels of enrollment. When race/ethnicity is viewed alone or in combination, the number of applicants and first-time enrollees from most race/ethnic groups increased. The exceptions were Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islander applicants and enrollees and American Indian or Alaska Native enrollees, which fell slightly. The Northwest had the highest share of its population applying for and enrolling in dental school. Applicants overwhelmingly had a biological or biomedical science background. The data and analysis presented in this report offer a unique picture of dental school applicants and enrollees. It provides school administrators with a national view of the qualifications of applicants, and it provides prospective students with a better understanding of the qualifications they likely need to enroll. The analysis also gives policymakers a preliminary view of future trends in the dental workforce. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article deals with approaches to the understanding of the profession and professional choice in domestic and foreign scientific thought. The key issues of the study of vocational guidance and professional choice are presented in the historical perspective. The interrelation of choosing future life path, professional future and that educational institution, which in the future will allow youth not only to get a profession, but also serves as a launching pad for future career, is considered particularly acute by the end of school before each graduate. Today, the choice of the educational institution by the applicants remains a significant problem for them and in this regard the researchers face the task of characterizing the educational behavior of modern high school students, future applicants. To answer these questions, the staff of Faculty of sociology of the Lomonosov Moscow State University was conducted among senior pupil of Moscow schools. The article presents the results of studies of different years of satisfaction with the level of received education, the motives for choosing the future education of senior pupils, and value orientations of youth. The main factors influencing the choice of the desired level of education and educational institution, as well as the basic model-goals of education used by youth in choosing their life path, were highlighted. The significance of higher education for future applicants and a steady increase in the trend of the spread of consumer behavior of youth, orientation in their life strategies towards success and high material wealth, a certain social status, are confirmed on the basis of the obtained data.

Background Concerns exist about the role of selection in the lack of diversity in health professions education (HPE). In The Netherlands, the gradual transition from weighted lottery to selection allowed for investigating the variables associated with HPE admission, and whether the representativeness of HPE students has changed. Method We designed a retrospective multi-cohort study using Statistics Netherlands microdata of all 16-year-olds on 1 October 2008, 2012, and 2015 (age cohorts, N > 600,000) and investigated whether they were eligible students for HPE programs (n > 62,000), had applied (n > 14,000), and were HPE students at age 19 (n > 7500). We used multivariable logistic regression to investigate which background variables were associated with becoming an HPE student. Results HPE students with >= 1 healthcare professional (HP) parent, >= 1 top-10% income/wealth parent, and women are overrepresented compared to all age cohorts. During hybrid lottery/selection (cohort-2008), applicants with >= 1 top-10% wealth parent and women had higher odds of admission. During 100% selection (cohort-2015) this remained the case. Additionally, applicants with >= 1 HP parent had higher odds, those with a migration background had lower odds. Conclusions Odds of admission are increasingly influenced by applicants' backgrounds. Targeted recruitment and equitable admissions procedures are required to increase matriculation of underrepresented students.

The article considers fundamentally different models of ensuring financial accessibility of higher education – Russian and foreign. It is concluded that the Russian model of ensuring financial accessibility of higher education does not contribute to social justice from the point of view of the material aspect. The strategy of offering universities for the provision of educational services should be based on a combined approach, when about 50% of training areas should be carried out in popular areas for applicants (focus on mass demand), and the remaining 50% should be linked to promising sectors of the region's economy. The observed division of students into budgetary and commercial ones encourages applicants to take a serious approach to choosing a future profession to a lesser extent than if education was obtained at the expense of personal funds.,

The authors present in this scientific study relevant concepts for managing the applicants’ selection to advanced engineering schools of transforming universities, with an emphasis on the universities’ orientation to solving frontier problems and achieving scientometric indicators. New tools for schoolchildren’ professional orientation from applicants to students on the principle of "accompanying career building throughout life" are considered. The paper proposes schemes for a two-level education system: bachelor's (specialist) and master's degree, taking into account the customers’ (partner enterprises) requirements, as well as several alternative scenarios for the candidates’ admission for training in higher educational institutions. The principles of applications’ selection for admission to engineering educational projects are systematized, as well as the criteria and indicators of the system for assessing candidates for two levels training - bachelor's and master's programs. A navigation center model for the joint interaction of T-universities with schoolchildren, applicants, students and graduates has been developed, which is a multi-level system of support and guidance for students in their professional development, with an emphasis on personal characteristics, a typology of thinking and human resource potential of regions. The proposed model includes not only the applicants’ recruitment, but also their self-competencies’ development, the construction of life and personal growth; the center's activities principles are also defined., Human Progress, Выпуск 2 2022, Pages 16-16

The paper summarizes results of the questionnaire surveys among high schools’ students in the Southbohemian Region. These surveys were done in 2008, 2009 and 2011. The aim of this article was to discover attitudes of the students of two terminal years of high schools as well as the students of higher professional schools to the new situation of the services offered by the sphere of tertiary educations. The supply of schools (measured by available capacity to take on students) have recently exceeded over the demand of applicants for tertiary education. This is caused by an increase of the education capacity of universities on one hand and by the birth rate deflation affecting the number of graduates from high schools on the other hand. The number of latest graduates from high school is not adequate to the education capacity of universities where the income based on the education activity represents an important part of their revenues. Universities and their faculties in South Bohemia have abolished the traditional entrance exams and some of them accept even one hundred per cents of applicants. This situation resulted in the development of promotional campaign using all traditional promotional tools. Questionnaire surveys have focused on factors of the selection of a university and faculty to apply, the results of studying at the university, sources of information on existing universities and applicants’ expectations from their university studies. The three-year survey allows authors to generalize implications and conclusions for university managers when recruiting graduates. Applicants permanently prefer economic field of study; the main source for them when choosing is Internet and they expect particularly to find better employment and to reach higher remuneration.

The changes in Czech agriculture over the past twenty years have had their impact on the agricultural labour market, too. The regional differentiation of the chances of applicants on the labour market as well as the agricultural enterprises’ chances of hiring employees fitting their requirements, are, among others, influenced by the specific conditions of agricultural production. The aim of this paper pertains to two basic problem areas: first, the differentiation of respective regions based on the number of agricultural applicants and job vacancies, and second, the identification of disequilibrium on the agricultural labour market. The latter is based on a theoretical framework defined by approaches in economy dealing with labour market equilibrium. Due to the unavailability of economic data (including wages, economic performance, etc.) on the regional level, authors develop their own methodological approach, based on the number of applicants per job vacancy. A database of applicants and vacancies available from the Labour Offices is used as a source for the analysis and interpretation of data, enabling us to study the agricultural labour market not only sector-wise but also region-wise.

Background: There is evidence that the addition of current medical student interviewers (CMSI) to faculty interviewers (FI) is valuable to the medical school admissions process. This study provides objective data about the contribution of CMSI to the admissions process. Method: Thirty-six applicants to a 4-year medical school program were interviewed by both CMSI and FI, and the evaluations completed by the two groups of interviewers were compared. Both FI and CMSI assessed each applicant's motivation, medical experiences, personality, communication skills, and interests outside of the medical field, and provided a numerical score for each applicant on an evaluation form. Both objective and subjective data were then extracted from the evaluation forms, and paired t-test and rank order tests were used for statistical analysis. Results: When compared with FI, CMSI wrote two to three times more words on the applicants’ motivation, personality, communication skills, interests, and overall evaluation sections (p

The accession of Lithuania to the European Union made transport one of the most important branches of national economy. Presently, economic development is hardly possible without an efficient transport system (providing both local and international transportation). The operation of industrial, construction and agricultural enterprises as well as work efficiency and a public opinion largely depend on the reliability and effective performance of transport systems which is not possible without qualified transport managers. The paper presents requirements raised for controlling the abilities and level of educating specialists in Transport Management and introduces employee assessment at student skills. Specialists in Transport Management are trained at vocational and higher schools of Lithuania. Experts in the field of Transport Management are trained at two university-level higher schools in Lithuania (Bachelors, Masters and Doctors) including Vilnius Gediminas Technical University and The General Jonas Žemaitis Military Academy of Lithuania (the introduced higher schools are located in Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania). Although both study programmes taught at the above mentioned higher schools cover the area of Transport Management, they have some differences discussed in the paper. A brief survey of admission to Lithuanian higher schools is analyzed in the article. Some statistical data on the popularity of study programmes chosen by the applicants participating in the joint admission programme to Lithuanian higher schools is presented in the article. Also the popularity of the study programmes of Transport Management (competition, competitiveness indices and average competitive marks and motivation indices) available at two higher schools of Lithuania is described.

Society suffers from biases and discrimination, a longstanding dilemma that stems from ungrounded, subjective judgments. Especially unequal opportunities in labor remain a persistent challenge, despite the recent inauguration of top-down diplomatic measures. Here we propose a solution by using an objective approach to the measurement of nonverbal behaviors of job candidates that trained for a job assessment. First, we implemented and developed artificial intelligence, computer vision, and unbiased machine learning software to automatically detect facial muscle activity and emotional expressions to predict the candidates’ self-reported motivation levels. The motivation judgments by our model outperformed recruiters’ unreliable, invalid, and sometimes biased judgments. These findings mark the necessity and usefulness of novel, bias-free, and scientific approaches to candidate and employee screening and selection procedures in recruitment and human resources.

- Abstract
Background: Social media may be an effective tool in residency recruitment, given its ability to engage a broad audience; however, there are limited data regarding the influence of social media on applicants' evaluation of anesthesiology residency programs., Objective: This study evaluates the influence of social media on applicants' perceptions of anesthesiology residency programs during the COVID-19 pandemic to allow programs to evaluate the importance of a social media presence for residency recruitment. The study also sought to understand if there were differences in the use of social media by applicant demographic characteristics (eg, race, ethnicity, gender, and age). We hypothesized that given the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions on visiting rotations and the interview process, the social media presence of anesthesiology residency programs would have a positive impact on the recruitment process and be an effective form of communication about program characteristics., Methods: All anesthesiology residency applicants who applied to Mayo Clinic Arizona were emailed a survey in October 2020 along with statements regarding the anonymity and optional nature of the survey. The 20-item Qualtrics survey included questions regarding subinternship rotation completion, social media resource use and impact (eg, "residency-based social media accounts positively impacted my opinion of the program"), and applicant demographic characteristics. Descriptive statistics were examined, and perceptions of social media were stratified by gender, race, and ethnicity; a factor analysis was performed, and the resulting scale was regressed on race, ethnicity, age, and gender., Results: The survey was emailed to 1091 individuals who applied to the Mayo Clinic Arizona anesthesiology residency program; there were 640 unique responses recorded (response rate=58.6%). Nearly 65% of applicants reported an inability to complete 2 or more planned subinternships due to COVID-19 restrictions (n=361, 55.9%), with 25% of applicants reporting inability to do any visiting student rotations (n=167). Official program websites (91.5%), Doximity (47.6%), Instagram (38.5%), and Twitter (19.4%) were reported as the most used resources by applicants. The majority of applicants (n=385, 67.3%) agreed that social media was an effective means to inform applicants, and 57.5% (n=328) of them indicated that social media positively impacted their perception of the program. An 8-item scale with good reliability was created, representing the importance of social media (Cronbach α=.838). There was a positive and statistically significant relationship such that male applicants (standardized β=.151; P=.002) and older applicants (β=.159; P<.001) had less trust and reliance in social media for information regarding anesthesiology residency programs. The applicants' race and ethnicity were not associated with the social media scale (β=-.089; P=.08)., Conclusions: Social media was an effective means to inform applicants, and generally positively impacted applicants' perception of programs. Thus, residency programs should consider investing time and resources toward building a social media presence to improve resident recruitment., (©Tyler Dunn, Shyam Patel, Adam J Milam, Joseph Brinkman, Andrew Gorlin, Monica W Harbell. - Abstract
Every year the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) gathers data on dental school applicants and first-time, first-year enrollees. This report analyzes information collected during the 2014-15 application cycle and on first-time, first-year enrollees entering dental school in the fall of 2015. The data include applicants' characteristics and academic qualifications and the number and characteristics of the applications received by each dental school. Among the key findings is an upward trend in the number of first-time, first-year enrollees, reaching 5,943 for this class. The number of applicants, 11,789, was still below the most recent high (13,742 in 2007), but a slight increase of 44 since 2014 suggests a possible upturn in applicant numbers. Additionally, GPA and Dental Admission Test (DAT) scores remained high, suggesting that dental schools continued to have a strong applicant pool from which to select. The gender distribution for applicants and enrollees was split nearly equally between men and women. Consistent with past years. White students were more than 50% of enrollees. The number of Latino/Hispanic applicants and first-time, first-year enrollees continued an upward trend, while the number of other underrepresented groups tended to fluctuate without a clear trend. The data in this report provide a comprehensive view of applicants interested in dental school, allowing schools to compare their applicant pools with the overall applicant pool on a national level. Finally, the information on enrollees offers a first look at the future dental workforce. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
As the title suggests, the present study is divided into two sections. The first section examines the challenge for annulment in terms of the conditions for admissibility. It analyses the judicial decisions which can be challenged, the content of the request for the challenge for annulment, the applicants and the term for lodging the request, compared to the regulation of the 1968 Code of criminal procedure and the case law formed while it was in force. The second section presents the trial procedure for the challenge for annulment with its two stages – the examination in principle and the trial itself, the requirements for the suspension of the sentence, the competent court and the decisions it can deliver and the possible remedies. The study ends with brief conclusions as to whether the current regulation of the challenge for annulment as configured in the present is a progress or a regression compared to the previous Code of criminal procedure.
