The Haftcheshmeh Cu-Mo porphyry system is located in the Arasbaran magmatic zone in Alborz-Azarbaijan structure zone, northwestern Iran. As ore mineralization occurred mainly in gabbrodiorite and granodiorite porphyry stocks, chemical compositions of rock forming minerals in gabbrodiorite and granodiorite porphyries are used to identify critical vectors of magmatic processes and hydrothermal mineralization related to the formation. All analyzed (magmatic and hydrothermal) apatites saturation temperatures show ranges of calculated temperatures of 830°C to 877°C and pressures of 0.11 to 0.96 Kbar, corresponding to depths of 4 to 10 km and H2Omelt content (3< wt.%), and suggesting a hydrous calc-alkaline magma generated from a deep magmatic source. Analyzed apatite support the ore forming magmas which are oxidized by I type magma with relatively high ƒO2. The trend of volatile element variations indicated that primary fluid exsolution probably occurred at temperatures from ~712°C to 842°C and was affected by hydrous and oxidized mafic magma from a deeper part of the magma reservoir. It may result in an extensive magma mixture with fractional crystallization of apatite in the evolved gabbrodiorite and granodiorite magma chambers.

Datong Coalfield was intruded by igneous intrusions in both the Indosinian (Late Permian to the end of the Triassic) and the Yanshan (Late Jurassic to the Early Cretaceous) periods，which caused contact metamorphism of the coal seam. Previous studies have shown that Sr is significantly enriched in coal from the 5222 tunnel of the Tashan coal mine. The maximum concentration of Sr in thermally-altered and unaffected coal is 3067 μg/g and 2729 μg/g respectively, and the average concentration of Sr is 1165 μg/g, which is 10.6times of the world average level in hard coal. However, the modes of occurrence of Sr in the Tashan coal still remain unclear. Samples in the 5222 tunnel including coal and intrusive rock were systematically collected. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF) were applied to elucidate Sr concentration variations in the sample; correlation analysis, scanning electron microscope with energy spectrum (SEM-EDS), and sequential chemical extraction procedure (SCEP) were carried out to reveal the occurrence modes of Sr, as well as the characteristics of Sr-bearing minerals. The results demonstrated that Sr exhibits a strong correlation with P2O5 in coal; Sr mainly occurs in phosphate (apatite) and clay minerals that are intimately associated; apatite was distinguished as fluorapatite in the shape of hexagonal columns and hydroxyapatite in the shape of fine scattered particles embedded in the clay minerals.

We present a geochemical dataset and cathodoluminescence images of apatite from the Neoarchean (2610 Ma) glimmerite-carbonatite rocks from the Siilinjärvi complex, Eastern Finland. The subhedral, tapered prismatic grains are compositionally fluorapatite, with limited substitution of Ca by Sr, Na and low REE and Si contents. The Sr/Y ratios are among the highest in a global apatite comparison, comparable to those from other calcite carbonatites, dolomite carbonatites, and phoscorites. Some grains show evidence of late- or post-magmatic interaction with a carbonatite magma or a hydrothermal fluid, resulting in REE-rich overgrowth rims or recrystallized grains with abundant fluid inclusions. We interpret the high Sr/Y ratios combined with low REE contents and depleted heavy REE+Y to represent crystallization from a mantlederived carbonatite parental magma. We show that the Siilinjärvi apatite is chemically heterogeneous but with a limited range in compositions. There are noticeable compositional differences on all spatial scales from micrometer to tens of meters, i.e., within a single crystal, between crystals in a sample, between samples and the two individual sampling locations. We conclude that the intra-crystal geochemical variability in apatite is a suitable tracer of the magmatic and post-magmatic evolution of carbonatite complexes.

Abstract Copper mineralization in the Pulang (PL) porphyry deposit, Langdu (LD) porphyry-skarn deposit and Songnuo (SN) porphyry prospect in northwestern Yunnan, China, is closely related to the emplacement of quartz monzonite porphyries. The chemical compositions of biotite and apatite from those porphyries were analyzed to calculate the halogen fugacity and to constrain mineralized and barren porphyries. Our data show that biotites from the PL deposit have higher MgO, SiO2, TiO2 and F contents than those from the LD deposit or SN prospect. Compared to those in the LD deposit and SN prospect, the Mg (atoms per formula unit (apfu)) and AlVI (apfu) value in biotite is greater, and the F content is greater and the SO3 and Ce2O3/Y2O3 ratio in apatite are lower in the PL deposit. Ti-biotite thermometry and apatite-biotite geothermometry show that the crystallization temperature of biotite from the PL deposit is higher than that from the SN prospect or LD deposit. The results suggest that oxygen fugacity, magmatic sulfur, and H2O contents cannot be used to efficiently distinguish the PL deposit from the LD deposit and SN prospect. However, the halogen chemistry of biotite from the PL deposit is distinctly different from that of the LD deposit or SN prospect according to the lower IV (F), indicating that mineralized quartz monzonite porphyries in the PL deposit formed during the late magmatic stage, which is in contrast to those in the LD deposit and SN prospect. The mineralized porphyries display a remarkable negative linear relationship (r = − 0.96) with the log (f HF/f HCl) and log (f H2O/f HF) ratio, which can be used to distinguish the mineralized and barren porphyries. Compared with other typical porphyry Cu systems, there is a remarkable positive linear relationship between IV (Cl) and log (f H2O/f HCl). In addition, the linear slope and intercept for log (f H2O/f HCl) ratios and the IV (Cl) of biotite from the potassic and phyllic alteration zones are significantly greater than those from other porphyries.

This is an article in the field of mineral processing engineering. Many iron ore tailings in China contain precious phosphorite resources, such as apatite, but there is a lack of economic and effective separation methods to separate and utilize them. The rotary triboelectric separation (RTS) technique has the advantages of low environmental pollution and energy consumption without the usage of water and reagents. This paper emphatically investigated the effect of different friction materials including copper, stainless steel, aluminum and PVC (polyvinyl chloride) on the charging characteristics of pure minerals of apatite, quartz, or thoclase and ilmenite which were the main components of iron ore tailings. The variation of apatite separation and enrichment performance in Shenjia iron tailings with the primary rotary triboelectrostatic separation parameters was studied and the optimum conditions were determined. It was concluded that apatite rubbed with PVC showed the greatest difference in the charge-mass ratio with other minerals. In the actual subsequent tests of apatite from iron ore tailings, a reasonably good separation performance with an apatite concentrate of 27.6% P2O5 grade at 49.3% P2O5 recovery was obtained under the conditions of rotary charger rotation speed 5000 r/min, feed rate 50 g/min, co-flow airvelocity 0.5 m/s, feed flow air velocity 0.6 m/s, accomplishing the effective separation and purification of apatite in iron tailings.

The second near-infrared window (NIR-II) in the range of 1000–1400 nm is ideal for in vivo imaging and sensing through reduced scattering, absorption, and autofluorescence. However, there are only a few nanophosphor systems with emission in the NIR-II region. Here, we report on Mn5+-doped Ba5(PO4)3Cl nanoparticles (BPCl:Mn5+ NPs, d < 50 nm) toward NIR-II temperature sensing. BPCl:Mn5+ NPs are made by a two-step (hydrothermal and anion exchange) method. XRD, SEM, and TEM results showed that the as-prepared BPCl:Mn5+ NPs show high crystallinity, uniform size, and sphere-like morphology. The nanoparticles exhibit a broad excitation band of 500–850 nm and a temperature-sensitive peak emission at 1175 nm in the NIR-II range. NIR-II temperature sensing by 1E emission intensity is demonstrated with good linear fitting (R2 = 0.9895), high sensitivity (2.30% at 373 K), and good repeatability (99.0%). Vertebrates use the phosphate mineral apatite in their skeletons, which allowed them to develop tissues such as enamel, characterized by an outstanding combination of hardness and elasticity. It has been hypothesized that the evolution of the earliest vertebrate skeletal tissues, found in the teeth of the extinct group of conodonts, was driven by adaptation to dental function. We test this hypothesis quantitatively and demonstrate that the crystallographic order increased throughout the early evolution of conodont teeth in parallel with morphological adaptation to food processing. With the c-axes of apatite crystals oriented perpendicular to the functional feeding surfaces, the strongest resistance to uniaxial compressional stress is conferred along the long axes of denticles. Our results support increasing control over biomineralization in the first skeletonized vertebrates and allow us to test models of functional morphology and material properties across conodont dental diversity. Conodonts, early vertebrates, are thought to have evolved complex tooth tissue as an adaptation for feeding. Bones and teeth are often the only fossil remains of vertebrates that are preserved over geological time in sedimentary rocks. They render valuable archives for geochemical proxies which are commonly used for paleo-reconstructions. However, the fossilization mechanisms of bone are not yet well understood. Crucial processes are the transformation of bioapatite into and the replacement of collagen by thermodynamically more stable apatite phases, such as fluorapatite. In the present study, aqueous alteration experiments on cortical bone samples were performed under simulated early diagenetic conditions in order to investigate whether and how an external phosphate (PO 4) source affects post mortem bone mineralization. Additionally, abiotic oxygen isotope exchange mechanisms between bioapatite and aqueous solutions were assessed by using either 18O-enriched water or PO 4 as a tracer. The presence of an external sedimentary 18O-labeled PO 4 source led to a rapid formation of new fluorapatite crystallites at the sample's margin that was highly enriched in 18O. Meanwhile, in the interior of the samples carbonate-poor hydroxylapatite formed through a dissolution-precipitation process without incorporating significant amounts of the 18O tracer. These two processes appear to act independently from each other. In samples exposed to 18O-labeled aqueous solutions lacking a PO 4 source, no newly grown apatite crystallites were found, however in the interior of these samples, nano-crystalline carbonate-poor or -free hydroxylapatite precipitated. A comparatively low but uniform 18O-enrichment was measured from the sample's margin towards its interior, which is assumed to have resulted from the adsorption of H 2 18O onto crystallite surface sites and collagen. Overall, our results suggest that a fast incorporation of 18O-doped PO 4 from the sediment source accelerated bone mineralization and consequently changed the oxygen isotope composition of the PO 4 group in the bone mineral phase more rapidly and to a greater extent than in a diagenetic setting lacking additional external PO 4. Dissolved PO 4 from the taphonomic setting thus seems to be an important factor fostering bone fossilization and preservation as well as oxygen isotope alteration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Samples collected from the surface/subsurface of C-type asteroid 162173 Ryugu by the Hayabusa2 mission were nondestructively analyzed in three dimensions (3D). Seventy-three small particles (approximately 10–180 µm in size) were observed using X-ray nanotomography, with an effective spatial resolution of approximately 200 nm. Detailed descriptions of these samples in terms of mineralogy, petrology, and variations among particles were reported. The 57 most common particles consisted of a phyllosilicate matrix containing mineral grains, mainly magnetite, pyrrhotite, dolomite and apatite. The remaining particles were mostly monomineralic particles (pyrrhotite, dolomite, breunnerite, apatite, and Mg-Na phosphate) with two unique particles (calcite in a Al 2 Si 2 O 5 (OH) 4 matrix, and CaCO 3 , phyllosilicate, and tochilinite-chronstedtite inclusions in a carbonaceous material matrix). The results confirmed that the samples correspond to Ivuna-type carbonaceous chondrites (CI chondrites) or related materials. Many small inclusions of voids and carbonaceous materials were detected in pyrrhotite, dolomite, breunnerite, and apatite. However, no fluid inclusions were observed, except for those in pyrrhotite that have already been reported. Magnetite exhibited a wide variety of morphologies, from irregular shapes (spherulites, framboids, plaquettes, and whiskers) to euhedral shapes (equants, rods, and cubes), along with transitional shapes. In contrast, the other minerals exhibit predominantly euhedral shapes (pyrrhotite: pseudo-hexagonal plates, dolomite: flattened rhombohedrons, breunnerite: largely flattened rhombohedrons, and apatite: hexagonal prisms) or aggregates of faceted crystals, except for Mg-Na phosphate. The matrices were heterogeneous with variable phyllosilicate particle sizes, Mg/Fe ratios, density (1.7 ± 0.2 g/cm3), nanoporosities (36 ± 9 %), and abundances of nanograins of Fe(-Ni) sulfides. The macroporosity of the particles was estimated as 12 ± 4 %. The observed textural relationships among the minerals suggest a precipitation sequence of: magnetite (spherulite → plaquette/framboid → rod/equant) → pyrrhotite (pentlandite → pyrrhotite) → apatite → dolomite → breunnerite → coarse phyllosilicates. Fe-bearing olivine (or low-Ca pyroxene) might have precipitated later than dolomite, indicating a high Mg activity in the aqueous solution. This precipitation sequence corresponds to a transition from irregular crystal forms (as seen in some magnetite) to regular forms of euhedral crystals (observed in some magnetite and other minerals). Based on the precipitation sequence and mineral morphologies, together with previously reported observations, a model for aqueous alteration in the Ryugu parent body was proposed as follows: CO 2 -H 2 O ice, amorphous silicates (GEMS-like material), and some minerals (mostly metal, sulfides, and anhydrous silicates) accumulated to form the parent body of Ryugu. Amorphous silicates and Fe-Ni metal quickly dissolved into the melted ice to form a highly supersaturated aqueous solution. Poorly-crystalized phyllosilicate and spherulitic magnetite precipitated first, followed by plaquette/framboidal magnetites with decreasing degree of supersaturation due to precipitation. Pseudo-hexagonal pyrrhotite plates were formed by dissolution and reprecipitation under relatively low supersaturation. Ytterbium monosilicate (Yb 2 SiO 5) has been recognized as environmental barrier coatings (EBCs) material with potential applications for SiC f /SiC. However, the corrosion caused by calcium-magnesium-alumino-silicate (CMAS) has posed significant challenges to the design and application of EBCs. In this study, reaction of Yb 2 SiO 5 EBCs against CMAS melts with different Ca/Si ratios (1.1, 0.75, 0.64, and 0.42) at 1350 °C was investigated. Results showed that the components of CMAS have a significant impact on the corrosion behaviors of the Yb 2 SiO 5 coating. The difference in Ca/Si ratio of CMAS changes the phase equilibrium during the reaction process. The CMAS melts with the highest Ca/Si ratios can form a combination of silico-carnotite (Ca 3 Yb 2 (SiO 4) 3), garnet and two kinds of apatite (Ca 2 Yb 8 (SiO 4) 6 O 2 and Ca 4 Yb 6 (SiO 4) 6 O), whereas the CMAS melts with the lowest Ca/Si ratio is expected to form Yb 2 Si 2 O 7 phase. With the Ca/Si ratio increasing, the viscosity of CMAS decreased and the aggressiveness of CMAS to Yb 2 SiO 5 coating increased. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Rare earth doped luminescent sensing materials as non-contact thermometers have attracted extensive research interests due to their wide applications in areas like military, medical care, aerospace, etc. How to expand the working temperature range and improve the sensitivity has become the focus. In this work, we synthesized a series of apatite-structured luminescent temperature sensors M 2 La 7.9 Ce 0.1 (SiO 4) 6 O 2 (M = Ca, Sr, Ba) via isomorphic substitution. By monitoring the differential changes of emission intensities from Ce3+ at the 7-coordinate and 9-coordinate site respectively when temperature varies, the real-time temperature can be determined. These materials were proven to possess the maximum absolute sensitivity up to 0.825 × 10−3 K−1, 2.63 × 10−3 K−1 and 4.33 × 10−3 K−1, respectively. Meanwhile interesting regular patterns were observed for their temperature sensitivities with the substitution of Ca, Sr and Ba. Furthermore, through studying the temperature sensitivity of Ba 2 La 8 (SiO 4) 6 O 2 : x Ce3+ samples with different concentrations, it was found that when the Ce3+ content was at the optimal doping concentration of 0.7, the absolute sensitivity of the sample reached 14.64 × 10−3 K−1 at 573 K. This finding has opened up a new avenue for designing fluorescent temperature sensors. The Mesozoic intrusions of the Jiaodong Peninsula, eastern China, host giant gold deposits. Understanding the genesis of these deposits requires the determination of the source of the parental auriferous fluid and the timing of gold mineralization, which are strongly influenced by the cooling/uplift histories of the hosting intrusions. We performed an integrated U-Pb geochronology study on both zircon and apatite from four major magmatic episodes of the Jiaodong Peninsula. The zircon and apatite U-Pb ages are 156.9 ± 1.2 and 137.2 ± 2.4 Ma for the Linglong intrusion, 129.9 ± 1.0 and 125.0 ± 3.8 Ma for the Qujia intrusion, 119.5 ± 0.7 and 117.2 ± 1.8 Ma for the Liulinzhuang intrusion, 118.6 ± 1.0 and 111.6 ± 1.6 Ma for the Nansu intrusion, respectively. The coupled zircon and apatite data of these granitoids indicate a slow cooling rate (11.9 °C/Ma) in the Late Jurassic, and rapid uplift and cooling (35.8–29.2 °C/Ma) in the Early Cretaceous. The dramatically increased uplift and cooling period in the Early Cretaceous are contemporaneous with large-scale gold mineralization in the Jiaodong Peninsula. The object of the study is the phosphates of the Djebel Onk region, which are part of a vast group of phosphate deposits formed in the Late Cretaceous-Eocene period on the South and Southeast Mediterranean shores. These concentrations of economic interest are operated near the town of Bir El Ater (Tebessa, Algeria). The mining industry based on the extraction and processing of different minerals while respecting the environmental framework plays an important role in the economy of a country. The economic potential of each country will be determined based on the level of production of metals and various mineral substances. In the case of the Djebel Onk phosphate ore, the most dominant mineral in addition to P2O5 is calcium carbonate CaCO3 with more than 50 % in the all-mineral content. In addition, phosphate concentrate contains harmful elements which reduce the value of the market product. Therefore, this study aims to recover the enriched product efficiently and profitably with a minimum of deleterious elements. This work aims to develop a treatment technology with a minimum rejection rate, which allows for achieving production goals and reducing environmental impacts. For this purpose, we proposed an enrichment of these phosphate discharges from the settling process utilizing pneumatic selection (Turbo Separator Ventilate – TSV). The results of the chemical analyses confirm the significant difference in useful and major elements (P2O5) and the minor and harmful elements (MgO). According to the granulochemical analysis of each slice, it is possible to note that the P2O5 content is similar to the various particle-size slices. It is therefore necessary to treat the mass of waste if we want to recover as much phosphate as possible. The obtained X-ray diffractograms highlighted appreciable differences between the raw phosphates and the concentrates, in fact, the qualitative and quantitative variation of the mineralogical species, particularly the calcite, quartz, dolomite, and apatite. TSV is a process used to improve the quality and quantity of phosphate and to eliminate the layer below 0.8 mm. Corresponding to the analyses it was appeared that the P2O5 content 29.5–30 % of the settled product increases to 30.2–31 % after dust removal. Calcium (Ca) phosphates are major hosts for phosphorus, halogens and incompatible trace elements in the Earth's crust and mantle and, by supplying almost all phosphorus to the biosphere, are indispensable for sustaining life on Earth. To better understand the role of Ca-phosphates in the deep silicate Earth portion of the global phosphorus cycle at depths of the transition zone, we performed experiments in the P-T range of 15–25 GPa and 1600–2000 °C using a moderately fertile peridotite doped with 3 % synthetic β-Ca 3 (PO 4) 2 and 1 % of a trace element mix containing a range of HFSE, LILE, REEs, Cl and Br. Tuite is stable to at least 25 GPa at which pressure its upper T -stability limit is between 1700 and 1750 °C. At 15 GPa, by comparison, the upper T-stability limit is located between 1750 and 1800 °C, indicating a negative slope of the tuite-out reaction(s). Thus, tuite is stable to at least 700-km depth with a maximum T -stability close to or slightly above the average current mantle adiabat (ACMA) at 20–25 GPa and significantly above the ACMA at 15 GPa. Beyond the P-T stability limit of majoritic garnet, tuite is the principal subsolidus phosphorus carrier in the uppermost lower mantle. Beyond the P-T stability limit of tuite, phosphorus is likely to either (i) enter a Ca 3 (PO 4) 2 polymorph with an even higher density, (ii) form an entirely new phosphate phase or (iii) be accommodated in lower mantle silicates in six-fold coordination. Within the P-T range of our experiments, the phases encountered show the following trend of phosphorus contents:P melt >P majoritic garnet > P olivine ≅ P ringwoodite > P davemaoite ≅ P wadsleyite > P clinoenstatite ≅ P bridgmanite ≅ P ferropericlase. Even when coexisting with tuite, bridgmanite and ferropericlase show phosphorus contents < 100 µg/g, and davemaoite has phosphorus contents that do not exceed 390 µg/g, testifying to the very limited phosphorus storage capacity of the lower mantle. Model calculations based on the phosphorus contents of ocean island basalts (OIBs) compared with those of mid ocean ridge basalts (MORBs) indicate that the OIB source is significantly richer in phosphorus than the MORB source and, for a wide range of OIB phosphorus contents, is likely to contain modal apatite. The relative importance of Ca-phosphates and silicates as phosphorus carriers in the peridotitic upper and uppermost lower mantle is strongly dependent upon pressure and the bulk phosphorus content. With increasing P , phosphorus is progressively transferred from Ca-phosphates to silicates with an ensuing decrease in the modal amount of the Ca-phosphates. Dependent upon the bulk phosphorus content, this may cause the Ca-phosphates to disappear before the upper-to-lower mantle boundary is reached, leaving majoritic garnet as the major phosphorus host. Breakdown of garnet will subsequently cause tuite to re-appear in the uppermost lower mantle and to resume its role of the principal subsolidus phosphorus carrier. For sufficiently high bulk phosphorus contents, tuite will remain stable throughout the transition zone, thereby maintaining phosphorus saturation in the coexisting silicates, and will eventually be joined by the tuite newly generated by garnet breakdown. SE Anatolia is witnessing the final stage of the Wilson Cycle, where a continental collision between the Tauride–Anatolide block and Arabian platform occurred, and a 1.5 km Eastern Tauride mountain chain formed. We present new low-temperature thermochronology (LTT) ages, including eight apatite fission track (AFT) and seven apatite and zircon U-Th-Sm/He (AHe, ZHe) ages, for the metamorphic rocks from the Nappe Zone of the Southeast Anatolian Orogenic Belt. The ZHe ages vary from 51.2 ± 0.7 Ma to 30.4 ± 0.6 Ma, the AFT ages range from 33.1 ± 1.6 Ma to 18.1 ± 0.9 Ma, and the AHe ages range from 23.6 ± 2.5 Ma to 6 ± 1.9 Ma. The LTT data show a continuous slow uplift of the region. However, the thermal modeling results suggest an Eocene and middle–late Miocene fast uplift of the region. Similar to our results, the LTT studies along the SAOB show that the vertical movements initiated during the Eocene period have continued in a steady-state regime to recent times. The Eocene epoch is identified by arc–back-arc setting in the region, whereas the Miocene epoch is marked by the continental collision. Within this tectonic framework, vertical movements on the overriding plate are controlled by both extensional and compressional tectonics. Selenium (Se) is an essential trace element for humans and animals, and an excess of or deficiency in Se is harmful to health. Research on the selenium enrichment zone began in the late 1970s in Shuang'an, Ziyang, southern Shaanxi Province. Naore village is only one selenosis area in Shuang'an, Ziyang, China. Different scholars have conducted systematic studies on the occurrence of selenium, its organic geochemistry and biomarkers, and its content and enrichment patterns in this area. This study applied the TIMA (TESCAN integrated mineral analyzer) for the first time to conduct detailed mineralogical work. The minerals included quartz, carbonate minerals (calcite and dolomite), feldspar (plagioclase, albite, and orthoclase), biotite and muscovite, clay minerals (chlorite and kaolinite), hematite, pyrite, and accessory minerals (almandine, olivine, zircon, and apatite) in Naore village, Ziyang, Shaanxi Province. The ATi index (100 × apatite/(apatite + tourmaline)) is used to determine the source of heavy minerals and the degree of heavy minerals' weathering. The content POS (100 × (pyroxene + olivine + spinel)/transparent heavy mineral) of olivine, pyroxene, and spinel in heavy minerals can reflect the contribution of basic and ultrabasic rocks in the source area. The ATi and POS indexes for the heavy minerals in the research area were 91.83~99.96 and 0.01~18.75, respectively, reflecting the abundance of volcanic rock material in their source. In addition, the migration, transformation, bioavailability, and toxicity of selenium in the environment are closely related to its species. The species of selenium in various selenium-rich areas (Naore, Wamiao, and Guanquan) mainly include unusable residues and organic forms, followed by humic-acid-bound selenium. This paper reviews the phosphate phases in meteorites and those measured by landed spacecraft, what they reveal about past igneous and aqueous conditions on Mars, and important implications for potential prebiotic chemistry, past habitability, and potential biosignatures that could be detected in samples returned from Mars. A review of the 378 martian meteorites as of 2023 indicate that of the two most common phosphate minerals in Mars meteorites, merrillite and apatites, the apatite composition is largely F- and Cl-rich, with shergottites containing more OH. The phosphate concentrations examined across multiple missions show a relatively narrow range of phosphate, with higher concentrations observed in the Mount Sharp Group in Gale crater and Wishstone at Gusev crater and lower concentrations observed at Jezero crater floor and Jezero fan. Possible secondary phosphates detected on Mars, including Fe phosphates at Jezero crater and Gusev crater and Ca- and Al-bearing secondary phosphates, temperatures of formation of secondary phases and their dissolution rates and solubilities are reviewed and summarized. Despite this wealth of information about phosphates on Mars, due to their fine scale and relatively low concentrations, Mars Sample Return is needed to better understand phosphate and its implications for the igneous, aqueous, and astrobiological history of Mars. Bhilangana granitoid is a batholithic size body exposed in Bhilangana Valley and later thrusted over rocks of Lesser Himalaya. It comprises mylonitized porphyritic granite gneiss, psammitic gneiss, and its variants, containing primary biotite and muscovite, and S-type in nature. Bhilangana granitoid is intruded by basic intrusive. The variation in chemical signatures and associated petrogenetic issues of Bhilangana granitoid are dealt with detailed petrographic, geochemical and mineral chemical study. In the vicinity of basic intrusive, the porphyritic granite gneiss shows enrichment of MgO, whereas its evolved part, psammitic gneiss shows more boron enrichment with the presence of tourmaline nodules surrounded by quartzo-feldspathic rim. The major mineral assemblage in Bhilangana granitoid is quartz–K-feldspar–plagioclase–biotite–muscovite with tourmaline, epidote, zircon, ilmenite, apatite and monazite. The granite is peraluminous with ASI values always >1. Biotite shows variation from Fe-rich siderophyllitic to Mg-rich eastonitic composition, indicating involvement of both Al-rich crustal and Mg-rich mafic sources, inferring source heterogeneity or mixing of felsic-mafic magma. Granitoid melt was buffered below QFM to NNO and partly above HM, indicating a strong reducing to the oxidizing condition of melt. The melt was saturated with the presence of 3.3–6.8 wt.% H2O content. The crystallization temperature of Bhilangana granitoid (TZr) ranges between 697° and 807°C with a solidification pressure of about 2.92–4.31 kbar, implying crystallization at a depth of 8.76–13 km. The presence of greisens assemblage of quartz–mica–tourmaline–epidote, along with the presence of fluorite, is a representative greisens assemblage for Sn–W mineralization. Thus, the Bhilangana granitoid represents the fertile nature and potentiality of Sn–W minerals. Apatite, Ca5(PO4)3(F,Cl,OH), is an accessory mineral that is widely present in rocks, usually enriched in trace elements and halogens, such as REEs, S, Mn, Sr, F, Cl, etc. The concentration of the above elements in apatite relies largely on the chemical composition of the corresponding melt from which they crystallized, which can well reflect the magma–fluid evolution as well as the related metallogenic processes. Therefore, apatite research is widely used in the fields of magma genesis, isotope dating, isotope tracing, and mineral exploration. The micro-analysis of apatite mainly uses instruments such as an Electron Probe Micro-Analyzer (EPMA), Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS), and Large Geometry-Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (LG-SIMS). In contrast, rapid and convenient Time-of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) has not yet been applied to quantitative analysis of minerals. In this study, Durango apatite was at first used as the test sample to explore the analytical accuracy (precision and correctness of analysis or measurement) as well as the influencing factors for quantitative analysis of trace elements and halogens in apatite by TOF-SIMS. We further explore the feasibility of using NIST 610 glass as a standard reference material for quantitative analysis of trace elements in other matrices (e.g., apatite). The results show that TOF-SIMS quantification of apatite is feasible. When Durango apatite was used as a standard reference material for quantification, TOF-SIMS quantified trace elements (Sr, Mn, and 54Fe) and halogens (F and Cl) in apatite with a precision of up to 4.41% (RSD) and a correctness of up to 0.07%. NIST 610 glass can be used as a standard reference material for quantitative analysis of apatite by TOF-SIMS, and the error between measured and true values is within a factor of 3. Apatite fission track (AFT) dating is now routinely performed using LA‐ICP‐MS, and U‐Pb age data are often acquired at the same time, allowing double dating of individual grains. Furthermore, additional geochemical data, such as REE mass fractions are readily acquired during the analysis. It is therefore of practical interest to identify a single material as a quality control on ages and composition. Here we present AFT and U‐Pb data for the McClure Mountain Syenite (MMS) apatite, already widely used as an age reference material by the U‐Pb community. We performed double dating on 238 grains, in thirteen measurement sessions over two years. The AFT data show remarkable reproducibility with an overall central age of 254.1 ± 5.1 Ma. The U‐Pb results agree with the reference age for individual sessions (and for all data together). The results show that that the McClure Mountain apatite is a valid quality control material for double dating, allowing the use of the same material for both methods. The origins of magnetite-apatite deposits are controversial, and the crux of the debate is what types of fluids form these rocks. We present evidence from 20 magnetite-apatite deposits worldwide showing ubiquitous involvement of molten salts. The studied deposits are distributed globally, from various tectonic settings, and from Precambrian to Quaternary in age. In every case, water-poor polycrystalline melt inclusions in ore-stage minerals are dominated by sulfate, chloride, and carbonate components plus variable proportions of calc-silicates, phosphates, and iron ± titanium oxides that re-melt between 285 °C and 1100 °C. These fluids are very different from what is generally expected in most geologic settings, but their ubiquitous presence in magnetite-apatite rocks indicates that molten salts are widespread and essential to the formation of these deposits. The Bayingobi basin is located in the middle of Central Asia Orogenic Belt, at the intersection of Paleo‐Asian Ocean and Tethys Ocean, as well as the junction of multiple tectonic plates. This unique tectonic setting underpins the basin's intricate history of tectonic activity. To unravel the multifaceted tectono‐thermal evolution within the southwestern region of the basin and to elucidate the implications of sandstone‐hosted uranium mineralization, granitic and clastic rock samples were collected from the Zongnai Mts. uplift and Yingejing depression, and apatite fission track (AFT) dating and thermal history simulation analysis were performed. AFT dating findings reveal that the apparent ages of all samples fall within the range of 244 Ma to 112 Ma. In particular, the bedrock of the Zongnai Mts. and Jurassic detrital apatite fission tracks have undergone complete annealing, capturing the uplift‐cooling age. Meanwhile, the AFT ages of Cretaceous detrital rocks are either equivalent to or notably exceed the age of sedimentary strata, signifying the cooling age of the provenance. A comprehensive examination of AFT ages and palaeocurrent direction analyses suggests that the Cretaceous source in the Tamusu area predominantly originated from the central and southern sectors of the Zongnai Mts. uplift. However, at a certain juncture during the Late Early Cretaceous, the Cretaceous provenance expanded to include the northern part of the Zongnai Mts. uplift. Based on the results of thermal history simulations and previous studies, it is considered that the Tamusu area has undergone four distinct tectonic uplift events since the Late Paleozoic. The first is the Late Permian to Early Triassic (260–240 Ma), which is associated with the closure of the Paleo‐Asian Ocean and the accretionary orogeny within the Alxa region. The second uplift event took place in the Early Jurassic (190–175 Ma) and corresponded to intraplate orogeny following the closure of the Paleo‐Asian Ocean. The third uplift event is the Late Jurassic to Early Cretaceous (160–120 Ma), which is linked to the East Asia's position as the convergence center of multiple tectonic plates during this period. The fourth uplift event is linked to the Late Early Cretaceous (112–100 Ma), driven either by the westward subduction of the eastern Pacific plate or the mantle upwelling resulting from the Bangong–Nujiang oceanic lithosphere subduction and slab break‐off. The primary stress orientation for the first three tectonic uplift phases approximated a nearly SN direction, while the fourth stage featured a principal stress direction of NW. The fourth tectonic uplift event of the Late Early Cretaceous and basaltic eruption thermal event during this period likely exerted a significant influence on the formation of the Tamusu sandstone‐hosted uranium deposit. Silicate-based bioactive glass nano/microspheres hold significant promise for bone substitution by facilitating osteointegration through the release of biologically active ions and the formation of a biomimetic apatite layer. Cu-doping enhances properties such as pro-angiogenic and antibacterial behavior. While sol-gel methods usually yield homogeneous spherical particles for pure silica or binary glasses, synthesizing poorly aggregated Cu-doped ternary glass nano/microparticles without a secondary CuO crystalline phase remains challenging. This article introduces an alternative method for fabricating Cu-doped ternary microparticles using sol-gel chemistry combined with spray-drying. The resulting microspheres exhibit well-defined, poorly aggregated particles with spherical shapes and diameters of a few microns. Copper primarily integrates into the microspheres as Cu0 nanoparticles and as Cu2+ within the amorphous network. This doping affects silica network connectivity, as calcium and phosphorus are preferentially distributed in the glass network (respectively as network modifiers and formers) or involved in amorphous calcium phosphate nano-domains depending on the doping rate. These differences affect the interaction with simulated body fluid. Network depolymerization, ion release (SiO 4 4−, Ca2+, PO 4 3−, Cu2+), and apatite nanocrystal layer formation are impacted, as well as copper release. The latter is mainly provided by the copper involved in the silica network and not from metal nanoparticles, most of which remain in the microspheres after interaction. This understanding holds promising implications for potential therapeutic applications, offering possibilities for both short-term and long-term delivery of a tunable copper dose. A novel methodology, scalable to industrial levels, enables the synthesis of copper-doped ternary bioactive glass microparticles by combining spray-drying and sol-gel chemistry. It provides precise control over the copper percentage in microspheres. This study explores the influence of synthesis conditions on the copper environment, notably Cu0 and Cu2+ ratios, characterized by EPR spectroscopy, an aspect poorly described for copper-doped bioactive glass. Additionally, copper indirectly affects silica network connectivity and calcium/phosphorus distribution, as revealed by SSNMR. Multiscale characterization illustrates how these features impact acellular degradation in simulated body fluid, highlighting the therapeutic potential for customizable copper dosing to address short- and long-term needs. [Objective] The Beishan Range occupies a key position in Central Asia. This study aims to deepen the understanding of the timing, intracontinental deformation processes, and their dynamic mechanisms in the Late Mesozoic on the southern margin of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB). [Methods] We conducted detailed analyses of the Early Cretaceous extensional and earlier compressional structures in the southeastern Beishan Range through field geological observations, interpretation of 2D reflection seismic profiles, and apatite fission track thermochronology. [Conclusion] Field observations show that Lower-Middle Jurassic strata have been strongly deformed by numerous thrusts and folds. 2D seismic reflection profiles reveal two NE- to NEE-striking normal faults. The Suosuojing fault is a SE-dipping low-angle listric normal fault, while the Wudaoming fault is a NW-dipping high-angle normal fault. These normal faults cut through the early-formed fold-thrust system, indicating a transition from contraction to extension. The Suosuojing and Wudaoming faults, respectively, define the northwestern and southeastern boundaries of the Early Cretaceous Zongkouzi basin. The Zongkouzi basin exhibits a graben geometry, with Lower Cretaceous strata displaying typical growth-strata relationships, suggesting that the normal faults were active during the late Early Cretaceous. Thermal history modeling results from apatite fission track data indicate that the footwall of the Suosuojing fault experienced rapid cooling between 132 and 110 Ma. This rapid cooling phase was closely related to the footwall exhumation during the normal slip of the Suosuojing fault. We argue that the Late Mesozoic intracontinental contraction-extension transition in the southeastern Beishan Range likely occurred between ~133 Ma and ~129 Ma in the late Early Cretaceous. The evolution of the magmatic-hydrothermal system that formed the Triassic Erdenetiin Ovoo porphyry Cu-Mo deposit, northern Mongolia, is reconstructed through the study of the sequence of stockwork veining and the petrographic characteristics of the veins, as well as the cathodoluminescence and fluid inclusion characteristics of the vein quartz. Early A veins associated with potassic alteration formed at temperatures ≳ 500 °C under lithostatic pressures. The quartz in these veins shows a blue cathodoluminescence emission and is extensively recrystallized. Subhedral to euhedral quartz crystals contained in AB veins precipitated at the ductile to brittle transition at ~ 400–450 °C. The quartz crystals have cores showing a long-lived purple cathodoluminescence color with well-developed growth zoning, whereas the rims of the crystals lack growth banding and have a brownish-red cathodoluminescence emission. Fluid inclusions in the A and AB veins show elevated CO2 concentrations but show no evidence for immiscibility, implying that Erdenetiin Ovoo formed at ≳ 5 km below paleosurface. Quartz in the A and AB veins is crosscut by molybdenite ribbons. The presence of encapsulated molybdenite and sericite grains along growth zones in the quartz rims of the subhedral to euhedral quartz crystals constrains the timing of Mo introduction and suggests an association with the sericite alteration of the host rocks, which affected 50–60% of the deposit. Elevated Cu grades at Erdenetiin Ovoo are linked to the occurrence of C veins, which consist primarily of chalcopyrite and pyrite. These veins surrounded by halos of sericite-chlorite alteration lack quartz as a gangue mineral, suggesting formation at conditions of retrograde quartz solubility at ~ 400 °C and hydrostatic pressures. Late D veins formed at ≲ 375 °C and hydrostatic conditions. The veins consist primarily of pyrite and are associated with texturally destructive sericite alteration of the host rocks. The study demonstrates that hypogene Cu mineralization at Erdenetiin Ovoo was predated and post-dated by sericite alteration, which has important implications to alteration vectoring in porphyry exploration worldwide. The early Triassic (~250 Ma) hornblende gabbro from the Tengxian area of Yunkai Massif, South China, contains a mineral assemblage of clinopyroxene, hornblende, biotite, plagioclase, K-feldspar and quartz and accessory apatite, and zircon and ilmenite. Based on mineral association and crystallization sequence, two generations of the mineral assemblage have been identified: clinopyroxene + plagioclase + apatite (zircon) in Generation I and ilmenite + hornblende + biotite + K-feldspar + quartz in Generation II. The high crystallization temperature (T = 999–1069 °C) of clinopyroxene and its coexistence with labradorite (An = 52–58) indicate that Generation I crystallized in a basaltic magma, while the hornblende's relatively low crystallization temperature (T = 780–820 °C) and coexistence with K-feldspar and quartz suggest that Generation II formed in an evolved alkaline melt. The mineralogical records are likely attributed to pulsed intrusion of the late-stage evolved magma into a crystal mush, like in Generation I. The bulk-rock geochemical data include a sub-alkaline affinity, arc-type trace element features, and highly enriched Sr-Nd-Pb-Hf isotopic compositions, consistent with the isotopic records from the accessory minerals, e.g., the very high δ18O values in both zircon and apatite and significantly negative εHf(t) in zircon. The combined mineral and bulk-rock geochemical data suggest that the primary magma for the Tengxian hornblende gabbro was derived from a mantle wedge that had been metasomatized by voluminous subducted terrigenous sediment-derived melts in response to subduction of the Paleo-Tethys Ocean. Epidote group minerals, including allanite, clinozoisite and epidote are common in a range of metamorphic, igneous and hydrothermal systems, and are stable across a wide range of pressure–temperature (P–T) conditions. These minerals can incorporate substantial amounts of rare earth elements (REEs) during their crystallisation, making them potential candidates for Lu–Hf geochronology to provide age constraints on various geological processes. Here we report on a first exploration into the feasibility of in situ Lu–Hf geochronology for epidote group minerals from various geological settings and compare the results with age constraints from other geochronometers. Magmatic allanite samples from pegmatites and monzogranites in the Greenland anorthosite complex, Coompana Province and Qingling Orogen provided dates consistent with magmatic events spanning from c. 2660 to 1171 Ma. In the Qingling pegmatites, a younger phase of hydrothermal allanite was dated at c. 215 Ma, consistent with the timing of regional REE mineralisation. Allanite from the Yambah Shear Zone, Strangways Metamorphic Complex, yielded Lu–Hf age of c. 430 Ma. It predates the garnet and apatite growth at c. 380 Ma, suggesting the Lu–Hf system can be preserved in allanite during prograde amphibolite-facies metamorphism. Additionally, Lu–Hf dates for hydrothermal clinozoisite and epidote are consistent with the timing of hydrothermal alteration and mineralisation in a range of settings, demonstrating the utility of the technique for mineral exploration. Despite the current lack of matrix-matched reference materials, the successful application of laser ablation Lu–Hf geochronology to epidote group minerals offers valuable geochronological insights into various geological processes that can be difficult to access through other geochronometers. The current research involves using microwave energy to modify the surface layer of UNS S31254 stainless steel in order to improve its bioactivity by cladding it with alumina-reinforced hydroxyapatite. For the microwave surface modification process, an industrial microwave oven supported by an infrared pyrometer and functioned at 1.1 kW and 2.45 GHz was utilized. In addition, the surface-modified samples were thermally heat-treated in a muffle furnace for 1 h at three different temperatures 400°C, 600°C, and 800°C. Scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometer, and simulated bodily fluid testing were used to investigate the metallographic, compositional, phase analysis, and bioactivity of microwave surface-modified samples. The presence of alumina in the microwave surface-modified samples was confirmed by X-ray diffractometer analysis. The microwave-assisted surface modification layer contains predominantly iron (Ni-Fe)-based austenite dendrites, as well as hydroxyapatite and certain reaction products, mostly in the interdendritic areas, according to the microstructural analysis. The results indicate that the heat-treated surface-modified samples exhibit lower porosity and higher hardness than the as-deposited surface-modified samples. Furthermore, the 800°C heat-treated samples exhibited the lowest porosity (about 56% less than that of the as-deposited sample) and maximum hardness (about 23.5% more than the as-deposited sample) among all the heat-treated samples. Phosphate tailings (PT) was used to reduce the release of heavy metals (HMs) during pyrolysis and the leachable rate of residual HMs, and simultaneously improve the bioavailability of phosphorus in the sludge-based biochar. The concentration of heavy metals and the fractions determined by BCR method was used to investigate the release and the transformation of Zn, Pb, Mn, Ni and Cu during pyrolysis involved with the effects of temperature and the addition of PT. The respective pyrolysis experiments shows that the release of Zn and Pb increases with temperature for both sewage sludge (SS) and PT, and the bioavailable fractions (F1 + F2) of Mn, Ni, and Cu increases with temperature for PT. During co-pyrolysis, blended samples released lower quantities of Zn and Pb and presented lower bioavailability of HMs than the individual SS or PT. A synergistic effect of co-pyrolysis was evident for volatile Zn and Pb. The decomposition of CaMg (CO 3) 2 from PT produced CaO, by which the volatile ZnCl 2 and PbCl 2 were transformed into ZnO and PbO with less volatility and higher reactivity with SiO 2 and Al 2 O 3 than the chlorides. Then SiO 2 and Al 2 O 3 from SS acted as the final stabilizer to immobilize the oxides. The final product combined with SiO 2 and Al 2 O 3 , such as ZnSiO 4 and ZnAl 2 O 4 , were detected. Copper mineralization in the Pulang (PL) porphyry deposit, Langdu (LD) porphyry-skarn deposit and Songnuo (SN) porphyry prospect in northwestern Yunnan, China, is closely related to the emplacement of quartz monzonite porphyries. The chemical compositions of biotite and apatite from those porphyries were analyzed to calculate the halogen fugacity and to constrain mineralized and barren porphyries. Our data show that biotites from the PL deposit have higher MgO, SiO2, TiO2 and F contents than those from the LD deposit or SN prospect. Compared to those in the LD deposit and SN prospect, the Mg (atoms per formula unit (apfu)) and AlVI (apfu) value in biotite is greater, and the F content is greater and the SO3 and Ce2O3/Y2O3 ratio in apatite are lower in the PL deposit. Ti-biotite thermometry and apatite-biotite geothermometry show that the crystallization temperature of biotite from the PL deposit is higher than that from the SN prospect or LD deposit. The results suggest that oxygen fugacity, magmatic sulfur, and H2O contents cannot be used to efficiently distinguish the PL deposit from the LD deposit and SN prospect. However, the halogen chemistry of biotite from the PL deposit is distinctly different from that of the LD deposit or SN prospect according to the lower IV (F), indicating that mineralized quartz monzonite porphyries in the PL deposit formed during the late magmatic stage, which is in contrast to those in the LD deposit and SN prospect. The mineralized porphyries display a remarkable negative linear relationship (r = − 0.96) with the log (f HF/f HCl) and log (f H2O/f HF) ratio, which can be used to distinguish the mineralized and barren porphyries. Compared with other typical porphyry Cu systems, there is a remarkable positive linear relationship between IV (Cl) and log (f H2O/f HCl). In addition, the linear slope and intercept for log (f H2O/f HCl) ratios and the IV (Cl) of biotite from the potassic and phyllic alteration zones are significantly greater than those from other porphyries. Planetary exploration relies considerably on mineral characterization to advance our understanding of the solar system, the planets and their evolution. Thus, we must understand past and present processes that can alter materials exposed on the surface, affecting space mission data. Here, we analyze the first dataset monitoring the evolution of a known mineral target in situ on the Martian surface, brought there as a SuperCam calibration target onboard the Perseverance rover. We used Raman spectroscopy to monitor the crystalline state of a synthetic apatite sample over the first 950 Martian days (sols) of the Mars2020 mission. We note significant variations in the Raman spectra acquired on this target, specifically a decrease in the relative contribution of the Raman signal to the total signal. These observations are consistent with the results of a UV-irradiation test performed in the laboratory under conditions mimicking ambient Martian conditions. We conclude that the observed evolution reflects an alteration of the material, specifically the creation of electronic defects, due to its exposure to the Martian environment and, in particular, UV irradiation. Thermochemical interactions between Ca 2 Sm 8 (SiO 4) 6 O 2 (CSmS) apatite and molten calcium-magnesium-aluminosilicate (CMAS) glass having CaO/SiO 2 mole ratio 0.37 have been evaluated. CSmS apatite-CMAS diffusion couples were annealed at 1200, 1300, and 1400 °C for 1–50 h. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, high angle annular dark field imaging, selected area electron diffraction and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy were used to characterize the phases formed during the reaction. Formation of a distinct cyclosilicate [Ca 3 Sm 2 (Si 3 O 9) 2 ] layer was observed at apatite-CMAS interface in couples heat treated at 1200 °C but not at higher temperatures. The cyclosilicate layer nucleated at the apatite-CMAS reaction front, continued to grow into the residual melt and eventually detached from the apatite substrate. Residual CMAS melt became Ca-lean when cyclosilicate was present. Formation of MgCaSi 2 O 6 diopside and dendrites of CaSiO 3 wollastonite was also observed within the residual CMAS at 1200 °C. At 1300 and 1400 °C molten CMAS, due to its much lower viscosity, infiltrated the apatite substrate through open pores and along the grain boundaries. Ca 2 Sm 8 (SiO 4) 6 O 2 apatite thermal/environmental barrier coating has the potential to provide protection against CMAS attack up to about 1200 °C but not at higher temperatures. In this work, a novel series of borophosphate glasses of the system 40B 2 O 3 –25P 2 O 5 –(20-x)Na 2 O–15CaF 2 –xMgO (x = 0, 2.5, 5, 7.5, and 10 mol%) were synthesized using the melt-quenching technique. The effect of replacing Na 2 O with MgO in the glasses was analyzed by the physical and bioactive properties. The glasses were characterized by density, molar volume, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Differential thermal analysis (DTA), bioactivity tests in simulated body fluid (SBF), pH measurements, mass loss, and verification of cellular compatibility in RAW 247 murine macrophages. XRD and FTIR analyses were performed before and after immersion in SBF to verify the bioactivity. Density, molar volume and FTIR results before SBF showed structural changes in the glasses due to the addition of MgO. The pH and mass loss measurements allowed to verify the degradation behavior of the glass series as a function of MgO concentration. The DTA data showed an increase in T g , T x, and thermal stability due to the increase in MgO addition. XRD and FTIR analyses after SBF soaking showed superficial formation of apatites and other calcium phosphates of biological interest in the samples, attesting the bioactivity. Cytotoxicity assessed by MTT assay on the cell line RAW 247 showed that at a concentration of 500 μg/mL all glasses were compatible (non-cytotoxic). The results suggest that the synthesized glasses are bioactive, with the sample containing 5 mol% MgO exhibiting the bioactivity and biocompatibility required for biomaterial applications. New acentric bismuth-sodium apatite (Bi5Na5)[PO4]6Cl2 with doubled c-axis and space group P6¯ is obtained first under mild hydrothermal conditions in excess of NaCl in solution. Structural solution was carried out on single crystal. The new apatite demonstrated wide heterovalence isomorphic substitution of Bi3+–Na+ in large cation positions, which allowed the final chemical formula to be established. This fact determines the doubling of the c-axis and the new space group P6¯ compared with other widely known apatites. Non-centrosymmetry of the structure agrees with a distinct effect of optical second harmonic generation, but the SHG intensity is small due to proximity to the parent centrosymmetric apatite structure as well as lack of phase matching for SHG and YAG:Nd laser emission. From a structural viewpoint, optical nonlinearity is determined by the difference in the isomorphic occupation of positions by large cations, with a slight deviation from the centrosymmetry of the whole structure. Tooth mineral is constantly exposed to saliva. Based on many factors including diet and chronic disease, salivary composition can vary in pH and potassium (K+) and sodium (Na+) concentrations. Tooth mineral is composed of bioapatite with an ability for ionic exchange between the mineral and the surrounding fluid. Na+ and K+ are known to integrate into biomimetic apatites during crystallization and affect crystallization growth/rate and morphology of calcium phosphates. However, it is unknown how exogenous Na+ and K+ in the solution affect carbonated apatite after formation. Therefore, we investigated the mechanistic differences between Na+ and K+ on biomimetic apatite dissolution/recrystallization. To do so, biomimetic carbonated apatites with 3 or 7 wt% CO 3 2− were exposed to NaCl or KCl solutions at various concentrations and pHs seen in saliva. Powder mass, Raman, FTIR, and XRD were used to determine the weight, composition, and structure of the mineral while the solution was characterized for pH and ionic variations. After mineral-solution exposure, significant differences were seen between NaCl and KCl solutions. The apatites exposed to NaCl underwent a classical dissolution/recrystallization mechanism exhibiting more loss in mass and carbonate during dissolution with modifications of A-, B-, and labile CO 3 2− amounts during recrystallization which were dependent on the initial apatite CO 3 2− content. Meanwhile, apatites exposed to KCl had less mass loss during dissolution and retained the crystal structure, A-, B-, and labile CO 3 2− amounts during recrystallization, suggesting that K+ may shield apatites from dissolution. To our knowledge, this is the first study to parse out mechanistic differences between Na+ and K+ on biomimetic carbonated apatite dissolution/recrystallization. Zinc (Zn) distinguishes itself as an excellent candidate for temporary orthopaedic implants due to its advantageous corrosion rate compared to other biodegradable metallic materials like Mg and Fe. The present research involved the fabrication of a porous, corrosion-resistant, and biocompatible plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) coating on a Zn–1Mg alloy. Bioactivity was imparted to the PEO coating by incorporating hydroxyapatite (HA) and silver-incorporated hydroxyapatite (SHA) nanoparticles into it by synergising the PEO process with electrophoretic deposition (EPD) in a single step. FESEM and EDS are utilised to confirm the porous PEO oxide layer formation and its sealing by HA and SHA particles in PEO-EPD coating. The coatings' phase composition, surface roughness, scratch resistance, and wettability were evaluated to assess their suitability for temporary implant applications. The coatings' wettability and roughness significantly improved compared to the untreated substrate, rendering it suitable for orthopaedic implant applications. The scratch resistance of the PEO coating was satisfactory and showed additional improvement in the thicker film with lower porosity, achieved through the combined PEO-EPD process. The electrochemical corrosion test in biological media revealed that the PEO coating enhanced the degradation resistance of Zn–1Mg, which was further enhanced by incorporating HA and SHA particles into the PEO coating. The in-vitro bioactivity test in simulated body fluid (SBF) and cytotoxicity test using L929 (Mouse fibroblast) cells proved that adding HA made the fabricated PEO coating biologically more favourable. A-type granites typically exhibit enrichment and mineralization of critical metals such as molybdenum and tin, essential for emerging technologies. However, the key factors influencing their mineralization potential remain elusive. The scarcity of studies on barren systems impedes the understanding of this question. Here, a detailed melt and fluid inclusion study was conducted on the barren Wushan pluton to reconstruct its magmatic evolution and magmatic–hydrothermal transition and explore the factors controlling the metallogenic potential of Mo and Sn in A-type granites. The Wushan pluton displays apparent lithological zoning consisting of two major phases, i.e. medium-grained seriate to porphyritic alkali feldspar granite and fine-grained porphyritic granite. Miarolitic cavities are widely developed in each lithofacies. The silicate melt inclusions from two granitic phases are rhyolitic, with moderate F contents (0.06–0.53 wt %) and depleted H2O contents (2.0–3.5 wt %). Melt inclusions show a wide range of incompatible element contents, such as Cs (9–1977 μg/g) and Rb (268–2601 μg/g), suggesting that Wushan has undergone a high degree of magma evolution. Mo behaves incompatibly in the magmatic evolution, and its content is enriched with the increasing degree of fractional crystallization, but remains constant after the Cs content exceeds 50 μg/g. Rayleigh fractionation model suggests that a large amount of Mo is extracted from fluid exsolution, which restrains Mo from further enrichment. In contrast, Sn behaves as a mildly incompatible element during the entire magmatic evolution history. The contents of Sn increase slowly compared to the trend of Mo, and the maximum contents reach ~30 μg/g in the highly evolved melts. The separation and crystallization of Sn-bearing minerals such as biotite, magnetite, and titanite inhibit the enrichment of Sn. Intermediate-density (ID-type) fluid inclusions hosted in the miarolitic quartz, representing the initial fluid exsolving from magma, display high Mo but low Sn concentrations. Constrained from two assemblages of coexisting ID-type fluid and melt inclusions, the fluid/melt partition coefficients of metals are obtained, with D Mo, fluid/melt at 16–19, while D Sn, fluid/melt is only about 1. The comparison between Mo-mineralized and barren intrusions worldwide shows that the metal contents in melts and fluids are not fundamentally different. The mineralized intrusions are characterized by the lower melt viscosity and the development of apophyses, both of which facilitate the extraction of metals and fluids from large magma chambers, followed by their concentration into a small rock volume. Consequently, it appears that physical and structural conditions rather than chemical compositions play a crucial role in the Mo mineralization process. Enrichment of Sn in melts is necessary but not decisive for Sn mineralization, whereas Sn enrichment in the initial exsolving fluid determines the Sn mineralization potential of a given granitic system. Compared to Sn enrichment in source melting and fractional crystallization which commonly enhance final Sn fertility in the highly evolved melts, the efficiency of Sn partitioning between melt and fluid plays a fundamental role in converting melt fertility into Sn-enriched fluids and thereby high mineralization potential of the magmatic–hydrothermal system. Low P-containing wastewaters (LPWs) exhibit huge P recovery potential, considering their larger volume. P recovery via CaP crystallization using apatite as seed is documented as being potentially well suited for LPWs. However, its responsible mechanisms remain a subject for debate. Taking hydroxyapatite (HAP) as the seed of LPWs, this paper conducted HAP adsorption/dissolution experiments, titration experiments, and P recovery experiments to distinguish the primary responsible mechanism. Results showed that it was HAP dissolution, not P adsorption, that occurred when the initial P concentration was no higher than 5 mg/L, ruling out adsorption mechanism of P recovery from LPWs using HAP as the seed. Significant OH− consumption and rapid P recovery occurred simultaneously within the first 60 s in titration experiments, suggesting CaP crystallization should be responsible for P recovery. Moreover, the continuous increase in P recovery efficiency with seed dosages observed in P recovery experiments seemed to follow well the mechanism of pre-nucleation ion clusters (PNCs) aggregation. During PNCs aggregation, P aggregates with Ca2+ quickly, generating CaP PNCs; then, CaP PNCs aggregate with seed particles, followed by CaP PNCs fusion, and ultimately transform into fines attached to the seed surface. PNCs' aggregation mechanism was further supported by a comparison of seed SEM images before and after P recovery, since denser and smaller rod-shaped fines were observed on the seed surface after P recovery. This study suggests that PNCs' aggregation is the dominant mechanism responsible for the recovery of P from LPWs via CaP crystallization using HAP as the seed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is widely used to study the ultrastructure of bone. The mineral of bone occurs as polycrystalline mineral plates about 3 to 6 nm in thickness. A problem in using TEM to make quantitative analyses of bone is that the orientation of the plates with respect to the plane of the section being imaged is expected to affect their apparent thickness. The purpose of this study was to test if this was true, if the apparent thickness of plates changed substantially as a result of tilt of the section. Methods: We prepared TEM sections of samples of cortical human bone by ion beam milling, orienting one section parallel to the collagen fibril axes and one perpendicular to them. We obtained TEM bright field and HAADF images of these sections, tilting the sections up to ± 20° at 2° intervals and measuring the apparent thickness of individual mineral platelets at each angle of tilt. Results: Thickness appears to double as section is tilted ± 20°. True thickness of plates is determined by tilting the section along an axis parallel to the plate orientation and determining the minimum apparent thickness. However, as plates are tilted away from minimum-thickness orientation, they become less well-resolved, disappearing when tilted more than 20°. We therefore also measured apparent thickness of only the darkest (most electron scattering) plate images in an untilted section and obtained the same average thickness as that obtained by tilting. Iron concentration tailings contain many valuable minerals, including apatite, which is not currently being recovered despite its use to make fertilizers and chemicals. This article proposes a flotation circuit to recover apatite from tailings generated by mining in Chile, based on laboratory tests and using the "Split Factor" method. The iron tailings were characterized by granulometry, chemical and mineralogical analyses, zeta potential, and contact angle. The effect of the collector, frother, and dispersant dose, along with the number of flotation stages, on both the grade and recovery of P2O5 were studied. The results indicate that it is possible to produce concentrates with a P2O5 grade of 29.1% and 89.6% recovery in a flotation circuit that includes the rougher–scavenger–cleaner stages. To obtain these results, it is only necessary to condition the iron tailings with 400 gt−1 of Atrac-2600, 400 gt−1 of sodium silicate, 10 min of conditioning time, pH adjustment to 10, and a time for the rougher, cleaner, and scavenger stages set at 10, 7.6, and 6.8 min, respectively. Detrital zircon provenance analysis plays a key role in reconstructions of past tectonic and sedimentary environments. However, non-unique (or even erroneous) interpretations can be introduced due to the inherent limitations of both zircon provenance analysis (fertility bias, recycling) and those of single-proxy provenance systems in general. Apatite crystallizes in a wider range of lithologies than zircon, and can thus facilitate more detailed source reconstructions. In this study, detrital apatite analysis of Cryogenian to Ordovician sandstones in the Cathaysia Block was carried out in comparison with detrital zircon data for a better understanding of the source-sink process on the northern margin of Gondwana. In contrast to the abundant Grenvillian (1300-900 Ma) detrital zircons of igneous origin, detrital apatites show major Pan-African (650-500 Ma) age peaks that are mostly derived from metamorphic rocks (52%-72%). The apatite data show that the Cathaysia Block mainly received detritus from western Australia and India during the late Neoproterozoic to early Paleozoic, with much lower affinities to East Antarctica and the terranes of Iran-Turkey. Provenance variations include a shift with time in the major age populations from ca. 900 Ma to 600 Ma with a decrease in metamorphic apatite (from 72% to 52% of all grains) in the late Cryogenian, an increase in high-grade metamorphic apatite (from 27% to 56%) in the late Ediacaran-Cambrian, and an increase in igneous apatite (from 33% to 45% of all grains) in the Early Ordovician. In contrast, detrital zircon data could only reveal the source change in the late Ediacaran. These provenance switches were likely caused by the unroofing of Pan-African orogens (640-490 Ma) and subsequent erosion of their exposed cores, due to the rapid uplift of source rocks formed in the Pan-African orogens during the Gondwana assembly. The electrical conductivity of apatite single crystals along three main crystalline directions was measured in situ using a YJ-3000t multi-anvil apparatus and a combined system consisting of the impedance/gain-phase analyzer (Solartron 1260) and dielectric interface (Solartron 1296) at 973–1373 K and 1.0–3.0 GPa. The obtained results indicate that the relationship between the electrical conductivity and temperature conforms to the Arrhenius relation. At 2.0 GPa, the electrical conductivity of apatite with relatively high activation enthalpies of 1.92–2.24 eV shows a significant anisotropy with an extremely high anisotropic degree (τ = ~8–16) value. For a given [001] crystallographic orientation, the electrical conductivity of apatite slightly decreases with increasing pressure, and its corresponding activation energy and activation volume of charge carriers are 2.05 ± 0.06 eV and 9.31 ± 0.98 cm3/mol, respectively. All of these observed anomalously high activation enthalpy and positive activation volume values suggest that the main conduction mechanism is related to the monovalent fluorine anion at high temperature and high pressure. Furthermore, three representative petrological average schemes, including the parallel, Hashin-Shtrikman upper bound, and average models were selected to establish the functional relation for the electrical conductivity of the phlogopite-apatite-peridotite rock system along with the volume percentages of apatite ranging from 1 to 10% at 973–1373 K and 2.0 GPa. For a typical Hashin-Shtrikman upper bound model, the electrical conductivity-depth profile for peridotite containing the 10% volume percentage of apatite was successfully constructed in conjunction with our acquired anisotropic electrical conductivity results and available temperature gradient data (11.6 and 27.6 K/km) at depths of 20–90 km. Although the presence of apatite in peridotite cannot explain the high-conductivity anomalies in western Junggar of Xinjiang autonomous region, it may provide a reasonable constraint on those of representative apatite-rich areas. At present, the extraction of rare earth elements in Bayan Obo mainly adopts the high temperature concentrated sulfuric acid roasting method with heavy pollution and high energy consumption. The problem of "three wastes" has not been solved reasonably, and thorium element is difficult to be recovered as an associated component. The chemical composition, mineral composition, particle size and dissemination characteristics of rare earth bulk concentrate in Bayan Obo has been studied by automatic mineral analyzer, X-ray diffraction analysis, scanning electron microscope analysis, partition analysis and optical microscope. The results show that the REO grade of the rare earth bulk concentrate is 59.25%. The main rare earth minerals are composed of bastnaesite, monazite and parisite, and the main gangue minerals are apatite, fluorite, pyrite and magnetite/hematite. The rare earth elements mainly distributed in minerals are La, Ce, Pr Nd, Sm and Gd. In the ore sample' the partide fineness is 95.92%-38 µm and the liberation degree of bastnaesite and monazite is above 55%. The overall distribution characteristics of the ore are more complex, and the rare earth minerals are most closely related to fluorite and apatite. In order to simplify the metallurgical process and extract rare earth elements efficiently, the prospect of separating bastnaesite and monazite by the method of "floating less and inhibiting more" after mineral phase transformation has been put forward, which provides an innovation method for the rational development and application of Bayan Obo rare earth bulk concentrate. The Helanshan Mountain tectonic belt (HTB) is an intraplate deformation belt along the northwestern border of the Ordos Block in the North China Craton. When and why this intracontinental tectonic belt formed, its subsequent uplift and erosion, and the relationships between ranges and adjacent basins remain unclear. To better assess the connections between the temporal and structural activity in HTB, apatite fission-track (AFT) and zircon fission-track (ZFT) analyses were conducted in this study. The lack of adequate FT data from the HTB is a source of contention and dispute. This paper collected samples for AFT and ZFT techniques from the central and southern HTB, trying to improve the research. The ZFT and AFT ages could be divided into the following 7 groups: 279 Ma, 222–213 Ma, 193–169 Ma, 151–147 Ma, 130–109 Ma, 92–77 Ma, and 65–50 Ma. The inverse modeling results of AFT indicate 4 fast cooling episodes of 170–120 Ma, 120–95 Ma, 66–60 Ma, and ~10–8 Ma to the present. Combining the results of FT analysis with radial plot and inverse modeling of AFT, the following eight age groups are believed to reveal the distinct tectonic activities in HTB: the first age group of 279 Ma mainly represented the back-arc extension of the southern HTB; the age group of 222–213 Ma was bounded with NNE-SSE trending contraction between the South China block and North China Craton; the event of 193–169 Ma responded to the post-orogenic collapse followed after the second event; the 151–147 Ma group was interpreted as the eastward extrusion induced by the subduction between Qiangtang and Lhasa blocks; the Early Cretaceous (130–109 Ma) group was not only affected by the rollback of the Pacific Plate, but also denoted the collapse of the thickened lithosphere formed in the Late Jurassic; the Late Cretaceous (92–77 Ma) group was attributed to long-distance impact from the subduction of the Pacific Plate beneath the Eurasian Plate; the event during 65–50 Ma was a correspondence to far-field effect of the onset collision between the Eurasian and Indian Plates; and from 10–8 Ma to the present, the progressive collision of the Indian and Eurasian Plates have a significant impact on the HTB and the northeastern Tibetan Plateau. In mafic systems where primary mineral assemblages have witnessed moderate- to high-temperature hydrous overprinting and deformation, little is known about the retentivity of the Lu–Hf isotopic system in apatite. This study presents apatite laser-ablation Lu–Hf and U–Pb geochronology, zircon geochronology, and detailed petrological information from polymetamorphic mafic intrusions located in the central-western Gawler Craton in southern Australia, which records an extensive tectonometamorphic history spanning the Neoarchaean to the Mesoproterozoic. Zircon records magmatic crystallisation ages of c. 2479–2467 Ma, coinciding with the onset of the c. 2475–2410 Ma granulite-facies Sleafordian Orogeny. The amphibole-dominant hydrous assemblages which extensively overprint the primary magmatic assemblages are hypothesised to post-date the Sleafordian Orogeny. The Lu–Hf and U–Pb isotopic systems in apatite are used to test this hypothesis, with both isotopic systems recording significantly younger ages correlating with the c. 1730–1690 Ma Kimban Orogeny and the c. 1590–1575 Ma Hiltaba magmatic event, respectively. While the early Mesoproterozoic apatite U–Pb ages are attributed to thermal re-equilibration, the older Lu–Hf ages are interpreted to reflect re-equilibration facilitated primarily by dissolution-reprecipitation, but also thermally activated volume diffusion. The mechanisms of Lu–Hf isotopic resetting are distinguished based on microscale textures and trace element abundances in apatite and the integration of apatite-amphibole textural relationships and temperatures determined from the Ti content in amphibole. More broadly, the results indicate that at low to moderate temperatures, apatite hosted in mafic rocks is susceptible to complete recrystallisation in rocks that have weak to moderate foliations. In contrast, at higher temperatures in the absence of strain, the Lu–Hf system in apatite is comparatively robust. Ultimately, the findings from this study advance our understanding of the complex role that both metamorphism and deformation play on the ability of mafic-hosted apatite to retain primary Lu–Hf isotopic signatures. Titanium with apatite-forming ability as well as antibacterial activity is useful as a component of antibacterial dental implants. When Ti was subjected to hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), copper acetate (Cu(OAc)2), and heat (H2O2-Cu(OAc)2-heat) treatments, a network structure of anatase and rutile titanium dioxide (TiO2) and fine copper oxide (CuO) particles was formed on the Ti surface. The resulting samples accumulated a dense and uniform apatite layer on the surface when incubated in simulated body fluid and showed enhanced antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus under visible-light irradiation. Electron spin resonance spectra of H2O2-Cu(OAc)2-heat-treated samples showed that hydroxyl radicals (·OH) were generated from the samples, and the concentration of ·OH increased with increasing Cu concentration of the Cu(OAc)2 solution. The enhanced antibacterial activity of these samples under visible-light irradiation may be attributable to the generation of ·OH from samples. These results suggest that Ti implants obtained using H2O2-Cu(OAc)2-heat treatments and subjected to regular or on-demand visible-light irradiation may provide a decreased risk of peri-implantitis. Doping of the (Sr,Ba) 10 (PO 4) 6 (OH) 2 apatite ceramics with a small quantity of Dy 2 O 3 was studied. Formation of the Dy3+ containing high-energy single-ion magnet (SIM) in the apatite structure was confirmed. Partial replacement of Ba for Sr in the structure resulted in a regular increase of the remagnetization energy barrier U eff from 1043 to 1119 cm−1, while the solubility of Dy3+ in the compound dropped drastically. In this work, porous nanostructured materials based on hydroxyapatite (HA) and titanium dioxide (TiO 2) were prepared by integrating the sol-gel process and supercritical CO 2 drying. These combined processes constitute a synergistic methodology that allows modulating the porosity generated in the gel and preserving it after drying. HA nanoparticles and a pore-generating agent (Polyvinylpyrrolidone) were included without significant modifications to gel consolidation times or integrity by using this methodology. The presence of HA nanoparticles within the TiO 2 matrix helped preserving the anatase phase after the calcination stage. No reactivity between the present phases was detected, indicating their successful integration in the final composite material structure, which was one of the most challenging aspects of the research. This allowed HA-TiO 2 composites to improve the adhesion of MG63 osteoblast-like cells and their proliferation, being the sample with high HA content (∼37 % wt/wt) the one that presented the best response. The present work puts forward a new way for the synthesis of scaffolds composed of HA and TiO 2 with retention of the anatase phase for applications in bone tissue engineering. Phosphatized fish fossils occur in various locations worldwide. Although these fossils have been intensively studied over the past decades they remain a matter of ongoing research. The mechanism of the permineralization reaction itself remains still debated in the community. The mineralization in apatite of a whole fish requires a substantial amount of phosphate which is scarce in seawater, so the origin of the excess is unknown. Previous research has shown that alkaline phosphatase, a ubiquitous enzyme, can increase the phosphate content in vitro in a medium to the degree of saturation concerning apatite. We applied this principle to an experimental setup where fish scales were exposed to commercial bovine alkaline phosphatase. We analyzed the samples with SEM and TEM and found that apatite crystals had formed on the remaining soft tissue. A comparison of these newly formed apatite crystals with fish fossils from the Solnhofen and Santana fossil deposits showed striking similarities. Both are made up of almost identically sized and shaped nano-apatites. This suggests a common formation process: the spontaneous precipitation from an oversaturated solution. The excess activity of alkaline phosphatase could explain that effect. Therefore, our findings could provide insight into the formation of well-preserved fossils. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
