The accuracy of waist to hip girth ratio (WHR) in assessing visceral/subcutaneous abdominal fat distribution has not yet been clearly established in the obese population. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the relationship between WHR and visceral/subcutaneous fat distribution, both assessed by computerized tomography (CT), in a group of 28 obese patients (15 male, 13 female). Furthermore, 33 normal weight or slightly overweight subjects (23 male, 10 female) were studied as a control group. Obese subjects of both sexes were found to have higher values of WHR than non-obese; conversely visceral:subcutaneous fat area ratio (VSR) values did not differ significantly. Significant correlation between WHR and BMI was present both in males (r = 0.41, P0.01) and in females (r = 0.54, P0.01). In normal weight males significant correlations between WHR and visceral fat area or VSR were found. In obese males these correlations were much weaker. In normal weight females a significant correlation was found between waist circumference and visceral fat area, whereas in obese females no positive correlations were found between anthropometric measurements and CT indices of visceral fat distribution. In conclusion, WHR cannot be considered as a reliable index of visceral/subcutaneous fat distribution in obese patients, particularly if they are females.

Highly performing perovskite-based anodes for methane mixtures-fueled solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) are proposed. Catalytic activities of La0.6Sr0.4Fe1-xPdxO3-δ (LSFPd) with x = 0.05, 0.1 toward dry reforming of methane (DMR) and partial oxidation of methane (POM) reactions are investigated. The addition of (30wt%) Ce0.85Gd0.15O2-δ (GDC) and of (30wt%) Ni(5wt%)-GDC to the perovskite compounds was evaluated to enhance both electrocatalytic and electrochemical properties. Electrolyte-supported cells based on La0.8Sr0.2Ga0.8Mg0.2O3-δ (LSGM) pellets and LSFPd perovskite oxides at both electrodes are fabricated and tested using CH4, CH4/Ar and CH4/CO2 mixtures in the 750–850°C temperature range. Fuel cell tests using anodic mixtures such as LSFPd/GDC and LSFPd/Ni-GDC are also performed. A discussion based on the comparison between catalytic and electrochemical results and on the possible reforming and/or oxidation reactions taking place at the anode is detailed.

Perovskite oxides such as ferrites have been widely investigated for their remarkable electrochemical activity as SOFC electrodes. However, their phase instability in reducing conditions remains an issue for anode application. The role of Mn substitution into B-site of La0.6Sr0.4FeO3-δ (LSF) perovskite oxide was investigated. New insights on the structural evolution of La0.6Sr0.4Fe0.8Mn0.2O3-δ (LSFMn) upon high temperature reduction were revealed. In oxidizing atmosphere, Mn substitution reduces the oxygen vacancy concentration while, switching to reducing conditions, it drives the transition from rhombohedral perovskite to single Ruddlesden-Popper phase, affecting the Fe0 exsolution. Redox-cycles of LSFMn were investigated and the properties of re-oxidized compounds were highlighted. The effect of Mn substitution on perovskite conductivity was also evaluated both in oxidizing and reducing conditions.

In cultural heritage field, significant research efforts have been recently made to improve the efficacy of anti-vegetative treatments and to reduce the environmental impact caused by biocides high concentration. According to the pro-ecological approach, this work reports a novel approach based on the encapsulation/incorporation of environmentally-friendly biocides in different silica nanosystems in order to control the development of biological patinas on outdoor cultural heritage. Two different green biocides have been selected and tested in silica nanosystems: the zosteric acid sodium salt (ZS), a natural antifoulant compound produced by Zostera marina (eelgrass), and the usnic acid (UA), a secondary metabolite produced by some saxicolous lichens. ZS was previously successfully encapsulated but never entrapped in mesoporous silica; instead, UA is, for the first time, encapsulated and in situ entrapped into the silica nanosystems in order to control the release over time. Both silica nanosystems have been characterized as far as their dimensions and superficial properties and loading capability. The antifouling activity was assessed against microorganisms from biopatinas colonising the Aurelian Walls in Rome. Our results have shown that the two nanosystems have complementary properties, thus it is possible to tune the antifouling efficiency by combining the two in different proportions.

As the hole transport layer (HTL) for perovskite solar cells (PSCs), poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) has been attracting great interest due to its low-cost, thermal stability, oxygen impermeability, and strong hydrophobicity. In this work, a new doping strategy is developed for P3HT as the HTL in triple-cation/double-halide ((FA1−x−yMAxCsy)Pb(I1−xBrx)3) mesoscopic PSCs. Photovoltaic performance and stability of solar cells show remarkable enhancement using a composition of three dopants Li-TFSI, TBP, and Co(III)-TFSI reaching power conversion efficiencies of 19.25% on 0.1 cm2 active area, 16.29% on 1 cm2 active area, and 13.3% on a 43 cm2 active area module without using any additional absorber layer or any interlayer at the PSK/P3HT interface. The results illustrate the positive effect of a cobalt dopant on the band structure of perovskite/P3HT interfaces leading to improved hole extraction and a decrease of trap-assisted recombination. Non-encapsulated large area devices show promising air stability through keeping more than 80% of initial efficiency after 1500 h in atmospheric conditions (relative humidity ≈ 60%, r.t.), whereas encapsulated devices show more than >500 h at 85 °C thermal stability (>80%) and 100 h stability against continuous light soaking (>90%). The boosted efficiency and the improved stability make P3HT a good candidate for low-cost large-scale PSCs.

In the attempt of satisfying the quest for new antifouling products tailored for applications on Cultural Heritage, we have synthesized and characterized two different silica nanosystems. The first consists of core-shell nanocapsules and the second one of mesostructured nanoparticles. Both systems have been successfully loaded in situ with the commercial biocide 2-mercaptobenzothizole (MBT). The synthesis procedure and particles characterization measurements, as far as their dimensions and superficial properties, loading capability, and release rate in aqueous solution, are reported. We stress that both particles have the dimensions required to avoid undesired light scattering once dispersed on the artefact surface. Interestingly, the two nanoparticles have complementary properties, suggesting that combining them in a coating may have a higher potential for production of new generation active products.

Structure stability and electrical conductivity of La 1-x Sr x Fe 0.8 Cu 0.2 O 3-δ with x = 0.2, 0.4 were investigated both in air and in hydrogen to explore their potential applications as symmetric electrodes for solid oxide fuel cells. La 0.8 Sr 0.2 Ga 0.8 Mg 0.2 O 3-δ (LSGM) electrolyte supported symmetric fuel cells were fabricated and tested in air/hydrogen ambient in 650–800 °C temperature range achieving a maximum power density of 162 mW cm −2 . To improve the cell performance, a composite electrode (70 wt% La 1-x Sr x Fe 0.8 Cu 0.2 O 3-δ −30 wt% Gd 0.2 Ce 0.8 O 3-δ ) was successfully evaluated both at the anode and the cathode sides decreasing the cell polarization resistance to 0.454 Ω cm 2 at 800 °C and reaching a single cell maximum power density of 294 mW cm −2 .

Within this dynamic process, which aims at consolidating a new profile of “pain-free hospital”, the strategy of coordinated visual identity develops a reading of the specific brand (starting with the naming), the same concept of a place for care and attention and support for service personnel and users. The use of digital tools such as QR CODEs, applied to all the designed paper products, repositions every small object in a wide and coherent range of items that applies a level of conformity to all signs, the staff uniforms, the internal and external communication, the new logo and the entire image of the hospital through the web site www.santabarbarahospital.it.
