57. The Mutual Impact of Personality Traits on Seating Preference and Educational Achievement

Abstract

Several studies have investigated the association between students' seating positions and their classroom performance. However, the role of personality traits on seating preference in the classroom has not been well investigated. The aim of the study was to understand how students choose their seats according to their personality traits in a classroom context and the influence of personality characteristics and seat selection on educational achievement. The seating positions of the medical students were recorded on an architectural plan during each class session, and the means and standard deviations of the students' locations were calculated in X and Y orientations. The locations of the students in the class were analyzed based on three architectural classifications: interactional zone, distance from the board, and access to the aisles. The NEO Five-Factor Inventory was used to evaluate the five main personality characteristics of the students. Midterm and final exam scores were used to measure the students' educational achievement. Analysis of variance showed a statistical significance correlation between the interactional zones and both agreeableness and conscientiousness. Mantel-Haenszel analysis showed a statistical significance association between sex and agreeableness and openness to experiences, which was mainly caused by zone II. Among the tested characteristics, a statistically significant relationship was observed between agreeableness and final exam scores. There was a statistical significance difference in openness and extraversion between the students with a high number of absences and their classmates. A relationship between the student's locations in the class, their educational achievements, and some of their personality characteristics are addressed.

Abstract

Background: In WDM networks, there is a crucial need to monitor signal degradation factors in order to maintain the quality of transmission. This is more critical in dynamic optical networks as non-linear impairments are network state dependent. Moreover, PLIs are accumulative in nature, so the overall impact is increased tremendously as the length of signal path is increased. The interactions between different impairments along the path also influence their overall impact. Objective: Among the different impairments, the present work focuses on phase modulations owing to the intensities of signals themselves as well as the neighboring signals. It includes the influence of SPM, SPM and XPM, system parameters like signal power, wavelength and fiber parameters like attenuation coefficient, dispersion coefficient and their influence on Q-value and BER. Methods: The analysis is done through a single and two-channel transmitter system with varied power, wavelengths and system parameters. The corresponding optical spectrums are analysed. Results & Conclusion: It has been found that SPM and XPM pose broadening effect on spectrum without any effect on temporal distributions. The magnitude of signal power is among the parameters significantly influencing the broadening of spectrum. The higher the power, the more the magnitude of broadening. It has been found that in order to neglect the impact of input power; its magnitude must be kept below 20 mW. Also, the dispersion and attenuation value need to be carefully as they pose counteracting effect to SPM and XPM for certain values and hence can be used as compensation measures without any additional cost.

We studied the antifungal susceptibility profiles in Iranian isolates of these two species.Methods: A total of 96 T. interdigitale and 45 T. mentagrophytes isolates were subjected to molecular typing by ribosomal ITS region. Antifungal susceptibility profiles for terbinafine, griseofulvin, clotrimazole, efinaconazole, luliconazole, amorolfine and ciclopirox were obtained by CLSI broth microdilution method. The squalene epoxidase (SQLE) gene was subjected to sequencing for mutations, if any, in isolates exhibiting elevated MICs for terbinafine.Results: Luliconazole and efinaconazole showed the lowest MIC values against T. mentagrophytes and T. interdigitale isolates. There were five isolates with terbinafine MICs ≥ 32 μg/mL in our sample. They belonged to T. mentagrophytes type VIII and harbored two alternative SQLE gene sequence variants, leading to Phe397Leu and Ala448Thr or Leu393Ser and Ala448Thr substitutions in the enzyme. All terbinafine resistant strains could be inhibited by luliconazole and efinaconazole.Conclusion: This study documented a step in the global spread of resistance mechanisms in T. mentagrophytes. Abstract

Background: The ability of dermatophytes to develop biofilm, as one of the virulence factors in fungal infections which contribute to antifungal resistance, is an outstanding aspect of dermatophytosis that has been noted recently. Because of the paucity of data about the biofilm formation by dermatophytes and their susceptibility to antifungal drugs, this study evaluated the biofilm formation by clinical isolates of dermatophytes and antibiofilm activity of common antifungals widely used to manage dermatophytosis. Methods: The ribosomal DNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions sequencing for species identification of 50 clinical dermatophyte isolates was performed. The ability of isolates to form biofilm and inhibitory activity of itraconazole, terbinafine, and griseofulvin against biofilm formation was assayed by the crystal violet staining method. Optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were applied for the visualization of the biofilm structures. Results: Trichophyton (T.) mentagrophytes (n: 14; 28%) and T. rubrum (n: 13;26%) were included in more than half of the dermatophyte isolates. Biofilm formation was observed in 37 out of 50 (74%) isolates that were classified as follows: nonproducers (n: 13; 26%), weak producers (n: 4; 8%), moderate producers (n: 16; 32%), and strong producers (n: 17; 34%) by comparison of the absorbance of biofilms produced by clinical strains with control. The mean IC50 values for terbinafine, griseofulvin, and itraconazole were 2.42, 3.18, and 3.78 μg/ml, respectively. Conclusions: The results demonstrated that most of the clinical dermatophyte isolates are capable to form biofilm in vitro with variable strength. Abstract

Background: During the past 5 years, an outbreak of recalcitrant dermatophytosis due to a novel Trichophyton species generally resistant to terbinafine, T. indotineae, has spread out from South Asia to many countries around the World. These isolates cannot be reliably differentiated from other Trichophyton spp. on the basis of morphological traits and the current laboratory diagnostics relies on sequencing of ribosomal DNA ITS region. Objectives: In this study, we aimed to introduce two inexpensive and rapid PCR‐based assays for differentiation between T. indotineae and other dermatophytes. Methods: The first introduced assay is based on PCR‐restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR‐RFLP) analysis, involving the amplification of TOP2 sequences and the digestion of PCR products by Cfr13I restriction enzyme. The second assay is proposed as conventional endpoint species‐specific PCR amplification of the C120‐287 intergenic locus. To validate the assays, a total of 191 Trichophyton spp. and 2 Microsporum canis strains with known ITS region sequences were used. From the T. mentagrophytes / T. interdigitale species complex (TMTISC), strains with 18 different ITS genotypes were tested. The sample of TMTISC isolates included 41 T. indotineae strains. Results: TOP2 PCR‐RFLP and T. indotineae‐specific PCR were positive with testing on DNA of all 41 T. indotineae isolates and two strains of T. mentagrophytes belonging to ITS Types XIII and XVI, but negative with other species and other TMTISC ITS genotypes (n = 152). Therefore, the specificity of both new assays was 99%. Conclusion: The two developed diagnostic assays provide accurate and cost‐effective means of identifying cultured T. indotineae isolates. Abstract

The coexistence of cystic echinococcosis (CE) and aspergilloma is rather uncommon. Aspergillus species, saprophytic fungi, can colonize pulmonary cavities that are caused by tuberculosis, sarcoidosis, and CE. Infection by Aspergillus is often occurring in immunosuppressed patients. However, coinfection of aspergilloma with pulmonary hydatid cyst is very unusual, especially in an immunocompetent patient with unruptured cyst. Herein, we report a case of lung hydatid cyst coinfected with Aspergillus in a 42-year-old Iranian man from Southern Iran. Chest X-ray and computed tomography (CT) scan showed a circumscribed cystic lesion in the superior and inferior segment of the lower lobes of right and left lungs that suggests hydatid cyst. Radical surgery (lobectomy) was performed for the patient. Histopathological evaluation reconfirmed the classical laminated layer of hydatid cyst. Moreover, the ectocyst layer of the right lung showed the presence of numerous cluster septate hyphae with acute-angled branching, as seen in the morphology of Aspergillus species. DNA was extracted from the cyst, and the ITS1-5.8s-ITS2 region of the fungal agent was amplified. Sequencing and analysis of seminested PCR product revealed that the isolate has the most similarity with Aspergillus niger. Further attention is recommended to control fungal pathogens during pulmonary hydatidosis. The coexistence of aspergilloma should always be kept in mind for the better management of CE.
