Abstract

Radio relics are Mpc-sized synchrotron sources located in the peripheral regions of galaxy clusters. Models based on the diffuse shock acceleration (DSA) scenario have been widely accepted to explain the formation of radio relics. However, a critical challenge to these models is that most observed shocks seem too weak to generate detectable emission, unless fossil electrons, a population of mildly energetic electrons that have been accelerated previously, are included in the models. To address this issue, we present a new semi-analytical model to describe the formation and evolution of radio relics by incorporating fossil relativistic electrons into DSA theory, which is constrained by a sample of 14 observed relics, and employ the Press–Schechter formalism to simulate the relics in a 20° × 20° sky field at 50, 158, and 1400 MHz, respectively. Results show that fossil electrons contribute significantly to the radio emission, which can generate radiation four orders of magnitude brighter than that solely produced by thermal electrons at 158 MHz, and the power distribution of our simulated radio relic catalogue can reconcile the observed P 1400– M vir relation. We predict that |$7.1{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| clusters with |$M_{\mathrm{vir}} \gt 1.2\times 10^{14}\, \mathrm{M}_{\odot }$| would host relics at 158 MHz, which is consistent with the result of |$10 \pm 6{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| given by the Second Data Release of the LOFAR Two-meter Sky Survey. It is also found that radio relics are expected to cause severe foreground contamination in future epoch of reionization experiments, similar to that of radio haloes. The possibility of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) providing seed fossil relativistic electrons is evaluated by calculating the number of radio-loud AGNs that a shock is expected to encounter during its propagation. Abstract

The main purpose of this paper is to discuss the influential demographic variables of elders’ wealth management behaviour. Purpose sampling for 122 older consumers (aged over 65) who participate in wealth management programme with instrument, was conducted in April 2007 in China (Taiwan area). Regression was performed for the data analysis. The results showed gender, educational background, and living location being key factors affecting elder consumers’ wealth-management behaviours, including consumers’ familiarity with financial products/services, sources of professional information, sources of word-of-mouth information, investment intention, and investment confidence. The main contributions of this not only include enhancing existing literature concerning wealth management, marketing, and elder behaviours (especially for clarifying how the controversial factors work), but unveiling elders’ behaviour tendency in such a blooming emerging market. Practical implications to bank marketers are also given.

66. Predicting miRNA-Disease Associations via Combining Probability Matrix Feature Decomposition With Neighbor Learning

Abstract

Predicting the associations of miRNAs and diseases may uncover the causation of various diseases. Many methods are emerging to tackle the sparse and unbalanced disease related miRNA prediction. Here, we propose a Probabilistic matrix decomposition combined with neighbor learning to identify MiRNA-Disease Associations utilizing heterogeneous data(PMDA). First, we build similarity networks for diseases and miRNAs, respectively, by integrating semantic information and functional interactions. Second, we construct a neighbor learning model in which the neighbor information of individual miRNA or disease is utilized to enhance the association relationship to tackle the spare problem. Third, we predict the potential association between miRNAs and diseases via probability matrix decomposition. The experimental results show that PMDA is superior to other five methods in sparse and unbalanced data. The case study shows that the new miRNA-disease interactions predicted by the PMDA are effective and the performance of the PMDA is superior to other methods.

82. Progressive failure analysis of scarf-repaired composite laminate based on damage constitutive model.

Abstract

A three-dimensional finite element model for scarf-repaired composite laminate was established on continuum damage model to predict the load capacity under tensile loading. The mixed-mode cohesive zone model was adopted to the debonding behavior analysis of adhesive. Damage condition and failure of laminates and adhesive were subsequently addressed. A three-dimensional bilinear constitutive model was developed for composite materials based on damage mechanics and applied to damage evolution and loading capacity analyses by quantifying damage level through damage state variables. The numerical analyses were implemented with ABAQUS finite element analysis by coding the constitutive model into material subroutine VUMAT. Good agreement between the numerical and experimental results shows the accuracy and adaptability of the model. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This research is related to investigation of the reason why youth use short message service (SMS) by conducting intensive in-depth interviews during 2008 to 2009. It found that affordability, convenience, flexibility, indirectness, recreation, and certainty are the major reasons to use SMS among Western exchanging students who study in Asia. Cultural phenomenon, like attachment, happiness, attitude, and so on, due to SMS usage is another highlight to follow. Furthermore, a conceptual model is initially introduced after summarizing the research conclusion.

Abstract

The current research aims at examining the dimensions of customer's perceived service quality of fixed line monopoly by taking into account the example of CTM, a telecommunications company based in Macau. Data were collected in 2012 by using (1) SERVQUAL questionnaire survey (with 95 CTM staff and 282 CTM customers) to measure their perception across five service dimensions, and (2) semi-structure in-depth interviews with seven CTM top management. Findings from the study indicated that both CTM's customers and staff believe that there is a lot of room for improvement to enhance the overall fixed line service quality of CTM. Respondents rated 'reliability' as the most important service feature for a telecommunication company. CTM should put more efforts in enhancing service reliability to improve overall service quality perceptions.
